This week, 200 Disney Parks Blog readers gathered at Epcot’s World Showplace for our Best of Epcot International Food & Wine Party. Our guests enjoyed a sampling of the best items from this year’s festival, including Crispy Chicken from Farm Fresh, Seared Shrimp from Thailand, Braised Beef Stroganoff from The Cheese Studio, the Zesty Cheeseburger & Cheddar Cheese Macaroni Handwich from Epcot Legacy Showplace and more. Our group also enjoyed a Q&A with festival chefs, music and dancing, appearances by Remy, Chef Mickey and Chef Goofy. Okay, so I may not know how to golf, but I know something cute when I see it… Mickey Refreshment Golf Cart … and that’s how I came across the Mickey Refreshment Golf Cart at Lake Buena Vista Golf Course! The golf course is located at Saratoga Springs Resort, and I was upstairs on the patio of the Turf Club when I looked down and this bright red and blue cart caught my eye — as did Golfer Mickey! — so I went down to check it out. Mickey Refreshment Golf Cart Close-up on Golfer Mickey Look who’s along for the ride… Remy! Disney announced that these new roving character-inspired Refreshment Carts were coming to the Disney Golf Courses — Palm, Magnolia, Oak Trail, and Lake Buena Vista — in July. Disney Golf Course Logos But again, since I don’t golf, it was just a fun stroke of luck to happen upon the Mickey Refreshment Cart before it drove off to make its next round on the course. I noticed it parked just outside of Chips & Slices. Chips & Slices Chips & Slices Chips & Slices is a Counter Service location, which offers more substantial breakfast and lunch options to the LBV golfers getting ready for their game (or just wrapping up). Chips & Slices Menu Chips & Slices Menu But the teeny little Cart also had a little more to share than I expected. Mickey Refreshment Golf Cart Along with bagged snacks and drinks, golfers can also grab a Breakfast Croissant, Hot Dog, or Deli Sandwich — or even make a combo of it — if they catch the Mickey Cart driving by on the course. For a limited time, Yachtsman Steakhouse — the Yacht Club’s Signature Restaurant — will host a casual breakfast and lunch. Learn About: Yachtsman Steakhouse Disney World Restaurants This option is available in the midst of transition for the Resort’s dining options. The Yacht Club will soon be home to the new Ale & Compass Restaurant, which will serve as the cornerstone for a new Ale & Compass dining concept. The concept will also include a renovated Ale & Compass Lounge and the recently opened Market at Ale & Compass. The Ale & Compass Restaurant will replace the long-standing Captain’s Grille, which has been operating out of a temporary location at Ariel’s in the Beach Club since May. Now, with the official closure of Captain’s Grille there is a temporary need of a breakfast and lunch options at the Yacht Club. Hence, the Yachtsman’s limited run offerings! Breakfast and lunch are currently available for Advance Dining Reservations through November 1, 2017 (the new Ale & Compass locations are slated for an October opening, with a confirmed date yet to be announced). Yachtsman Steakhouse Entrance For breakfast, choices include a Pastry Board among the Early Starters, and it’s fun to see the Dark Chocolate Waffles from Captain’s Grille still listed as an Entree (even if I already miss the Lobster Omelet). I’m not sure how to emphasize how good the Plaza Inn‘s Fried Chicken is. Let me just say this: it is the best fried chicken I have ever eaten. (Yes, that includes Homecomin’, which is incredibly tasty as well.) Fact: Plaza Inn’s Fried Chicken — literally — is the best. Plaza Inn Sign Plaza Inn is located on Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A., and its exterior is quintessentially Disney. So many great details on the awning and posts, not to mention the swirls of wrought iron on the sign. Plaza Inn Entrance Plaza Inn has both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is dwarfed by the Matterhorn and the entrance to Tomorrowland in the background. It’s a cool juxtaposition that you can only find in a Disney Park. Plaza Inn Outdoor Seating Outdoor seating is beneath large, fancy umbrellas. Lots of delicate white chairs and tables dot the patio area, which has a relaxing vibe. Plaza Inn Seating Area Inside, you’ll find the Plaza Inn has a unique set-up. The restaurant is actually a buffet character spot for breakfast, so there are several stations designed to maximize the options of a buffet. For lunch and dinner, though, you visit specific stations to select specific items. Plaza Inn Buffet/Ordering Area But there’s really only one station that you need to visit: Chicken. Plaza Inn CHICKEN! Seriously. Chicken. But, hey, in case you just have to know about the other options, the menu provides insight. The Pot Roast is quite good, and I love a good Cobb Salad. Plaza Inn Menu But my heart only belongs to one meal. The menu highlights “distinctive herbs and spices,” and that’s totally the key to the addictive nature of this Fried Chicken. Specialty, indeed! Plaza Inn Chicken Meal I did want to try a couple of desserts as well because… Carrot Cake! AND Strawberry Shortcake! Plaza Inn Yumminess But first: golden brown, crispy, crunchy, salty, juicy Fried Chicken! Served with two classic comfort food side dishes: yummy Mashed Potatoes covered in gravy and tasty Green Beans. A Biscuit finishes off the plate, making this meal big enough for two. Plaza Inn Chicken Here’s a close-up on that unbelievable FRIED CHICKEN. Plaza Inn Chicken: Just Gaze Lovingly for a Moment This meal has well-earned its legendary status. Right up there with the Monte Cristo Sandwich at Cafe Orleans, it’s a tried-and-true Disneyland MUST-EAT. Okay, phew. Moving on. Because I lurrrrrve Carrot Cake, and this is a good one! There’s a nice, thick layer of Cream Cheese Frosting on the top, plus decent layers of frosting in between layers of moist Carrot Cake. A duo of sauces frames the cake and provides a little extra tang. Carrot Cake The Strawberry Shortcake is also terrific. A moist and generous Pound Cake Round is sliced in half, filled with sweet Whipped Cream, and drenched in Strawberry Sauce (with tons of strawberry pieces!). A sprig of bright green Mint completes this really well-done, classic dessert! Note that this one is seasonal. Strawberry Shortcake The Plaza Inn is amazing (understatement!). You know which Resort Counter Service location has a couple of fun options for breakfast? Learn About: Good’s Food to Go Disney World Restaurants Good’s Food to Go at Old Key West Resort! Now, you may be thinking, “Great! Wait…. where?” And that’s fair enough. Because Good’s Food to Go isn’t exactly what you might call a high profile location. While Olivia’s Cafe — Old Key West’s Table Service restaurant — has earned its great reputation (though it still flies under the radar due to its non-park-centric location), Good’s Food to Go is hardly known at all. Which makes sense. You’ll soon see that it’s not “destination dining,” per se. Good’s Food To Go Even though its surroundings reflect the fun and tropical Keys vibe of the Resort (and it’s tucked right next to what is possibly the cutest little bar in all of Disney World, the Gurgling Suitcase)… Old Key West Resort Gurgling Suitcase Gurgling Suitcase … Good’s Food to Go is nothing more than a counter. Like, literally one counter. Good’s Food To Go Remember, this is the original Disney Vacation Club location, so this does make sense when you consider that most guests very much make Old Key West their home away from home and likely utilize their studio or villa kitchen for breakfast. Still, you have everything you need from a Counter Service spot with some grab-and-go options as well as drinks nearby. Good’s Food To Go facing Beverage Station But it’s only the basics. And that’s why it’s surprising that a few of the options on the small breakfast menu are fairly intriguing! Yes, you’ve got your Disney-standard Bounty Breakfast Platter, and an Egg, Sausage, and Cheese Biscuit. Breakfast Menu But Harry’s Hearty Breakfast Bowl pairs a biscuit and gravy with O’Brien potatoes and scrambled eggs. And I was definitely tempted by the Ham and Cheese on Texas Toast. Ultimately, though, I couldn’t resist Olivia’s Bread Pudding. It’s a base of doughy pastry chunks poured over with Olivia’s Rum Sauce, served with your choice of sausage or bacon. Olivia’s Bread Pudding with Bacon As you can see, everything is absolutely swimming in that tasty, sweet-with-a-nice-amount-of-salty-butter Rum Sauce. HOORAY! Olivia’s Bread Pudding I picked up on a small bit of cinnamon spice in the thick bread pudding. Olivia’s Bread Pudding The portion wasn’t huge, but the pudding was so rich, and the sauce so decadent, that I almost couldn’t finish the final two bites. I pressed on, though . Olivia’s Bread Pudding If you’re missing the Bananas Foster Waffles that used to be served at Roaring Fork in the Wilderness Lodge (like I am), this dish scratches a similar itch. And having an excuse to start the day with bread pudding… well, I’ll take that anytime! Should you happen to find yourself at Good’s Food to Go — or are one of the people lucky enough to call Old Key West Resort “home” — maybe consider digging into some Olivia’s Bread Pudding to start your day! Since its earliest days, I’ve always enjoyed a stop at Yak and Yeti Restaurant. Learn About: Yak and Yeti Restaurant Animal Kingdom Disney World Restaurants Yak and Yeti is located in Animal Kingdom’s Asia (you’ll pass it on the corner on your way to the Maharajah Jungle Trek) in the fictional village of Anandapur. Like Tiffins and Restaurantosaurus — and pretty much any restaurant in Animal Kingdom — theming is key here, with decor that is immersive and memorable. While you dine, you are surrounded by images and icons of East Asian culture. Even the brightly painted exterior mimics that which you might see on the colorful village streets of Northern India or Nepal. And as for the food? It’s also usually — dare I say it? – consistent here. Consistently GOOD. If you’ve been reading DFB for any length of time, then you’ll know that is a compliment I rarely bestow, as it’s so rarely earned in any Disney World Table Service restaurant. So… I headed to Yak and Yeti ON MY BIRTHDAY, because I reeeeally wanted those firecracker shrimp on my special day. Did my most recent visit likewise measure up? Atmosphere Once you’re on the right continent in Animal Kingdom, the bright purple stucco exterior that makes up Yak & Yeti Restaurant is accented by arched windows, intricate corbels, and beautifully carved doors. Yak and Yeti Restaurant The backstory here is that the owner of this building in Anandapur is a man named Arjun, a former merchant who’s turned his opulent home into lodging for travelers. These details account for the eclectic mix of statues, wall hangings, and furniture. The bar area you see below features examples of these details. Bar There is seating both downstairs and up, with tons of framed images and elaborate mirrors everywhere you look. Downstairs Seating This is the view looking down into a first floor seating area from the upstairs. It’s such a warm contrast of colors, with a massive carved art piece on the far wall. Be Sure to Pencil in Extra Time Just to Look Around! And evidently Arjun had a thing for light fixtures, because there are too many different designs to count! We love the lamps here so much that we actually did a whole DFB post about them! Unique lighting! Statues reflect gods and idols from a variety of religions, like this take on the Buddha. Decor at Yak & Yeti! You’ll definitely want to take some time to wander the restaurant before you leave. It’s a really cool place. Eats But at some point, you’ll want to look away from the decor and peruse the menu. It’s Asian fusion or pan-Asian, as you might expect from an Anandapur merchant who’s traveled the world. Crowd favorites like Wok-Fried Green Beans and Pot Stickers are good bets for those who desire something familiar. Among the items I’ve tried before are the Chicken Tikka Masala (YUM!) and Honey Chicken. Menu — Click to Enlarge Menu photos give you a colorful idea of what some of the newer items look like. Sriracha Fish Tacos and a Korean Fried Chicken and Waffle put a North American twist on Asian flavors. Menu Photos — Sriracha Fish Tacos and Korean Fried Chicken and Waffle And Sriracha Seafood Mac and Cheese and Grilled Ribeye Steak take guest favorites and give them nudge toward Asia (just a wee bit ). We checked out the Wine and Sake list, but you’ll find many other specialty drinks as well. And since you’ve traveled allllll the way to Asia, you might as well linger over a drink, right? Drink Menu — Click to Enlarge Although the Small Plates menu features plenty of tempting choices, there’s really only one choice for me, and that’s the Firecracker Shrimp. Now, you may be thinking, “Wait. I remember this dish. Didn’t you have it the last time you went to Yak & Yeti, AJ?” And the answer is: YEP! Like I said, it was my BIRTHDAY. And on my birthday, I go eat all my favorites. Firecracker Shrimp This is a TON of crispy fried shrimp tossed in a creamy, spicy sauce. And once you get started on these, too? You’ll be done for. The Asian slaw underneath and the pungent green onion really do elevate the dish (and give you something to mop up any residual, yummy sauce). Don’t miss it! Having enjoyed a tried-and-true, it was time to try a more recent addition to the menu. Lucky for me, one of those recent additions is a Mac-and-Cheese entree: the Sriracha Seafood Mac and Cheese, featuring well-prepared shrimp and scallops and a wallop of sriracha sauce generously drizzled over the top. The cheese sauce is made with a strong and creamy havarti, which is able to stand up to the hot sauce. Sriracha Seafood Mac and Cheese Garnishes include parmesean panko bread crumbs, julienned vegetables, micro-greens, and cilantro (which you can go ahead and remove if, like me, you just CAN’T when it comes to cilantro). Sriracha Seafood Mac and Cheese I’d heard a few bad reviews of this dish, but for it it was A-OK. The vegetables and micro-greens in the dish are a welcome contrast to the heavy mac and cheese. It all comes together wonderfully! I also went with the Soy Glazed Ribeye. This lovely steak is seasoned with a peppery soy sauce, then topped with a warm shitake mushroom and pepper relish. Underneath the large steak is corn and edamame succotash. There was tremendous balance in this dish between the carefully seasoned steak, the complex relish, and the fresh succotash. Soy Herb Glazed Ribeye Sadly, you can’t see the wasabi mashed potatoes which are plated behind the steak. But that spiced-up starch offered a terrific foil for the richness of the other flavors. And overall this steak was a KILLER. I loved it. The spices and flavors were on point and I ate MUCH more of it than I’d intended. I rarely leave Yak and Yeti without ordering dessert. The Fried Wontons are always a big winner and that mango pie, tho… but hadn’t had the New York Style Cheesecake in a while. The sauces are a Mango and Strawberry Coulis, and it’s further topped with Whipped Cream. New York Cheesecake This was probably the only “meh” of the meal. It’s fine, but it’s no Junior’s. Definitely go with those Cream Cheese Won-Tons or the Mango Pie. Nosh or Not? You’ll want to make a reservation at Arjun’s place if: You love Asian-fusion cuisine and want to try this Disney version of it. You have an affinity for East Asian art and decor and would like to immerse yourself in it. You’re looking for a respite from the heat and want a seriously great Table Service meal in Animal Kingdom that doesn’t require the same bucks as Tiffins and Tusker House. You might want to skip this dining experience if: You or your traveling party aren’t big fans of Asian cuisine, or crave more familiar fare. You’ll be spending most of your Animal Kingdom time tackling the lines in Pandora and don’t want to worry about an Advance Dining Reservation. Overall Yak and Yeti is a terrific table service dining option in a park that’s in the middle of a food renaissance. And while you might find yourself spending a bit more time in Pandora (and a bit less time in the other lands), Yak and Yeti is totally worth the beautiful stroll over to Asia. Plus, you’ll be queuing up for Expedition: Everest anyway, right? Although, now that I mention it, perhaps you should plan to eat at Yak & Yeti after you take on the Yeti ! Coconut lovers, have I got a treat for you today! Learn About: Gasparilla Island Grill Grand Floridian Disney World Restaurants And it’s located someplace rather unexpected: Gasparilla Island Grill in Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. You see, Gasparilla Island Grill has never been a spot we’ve visited specifically to seek out dessert. Like, EVER. Gasparilla has always carried a couple of cupcakes in the refrigerated section, like the Pina Colada Cupcake and the German Chocolate Cupcake. But when you consider the fact that some really incredible dessert options are just a quick ride away via the Resort Monorail (like the Peanut Butter Pie at Contempo Cafe, or Dole Whips at Pineapple Lanai), Gasparilla’s offerings usually seemed pretty ho-hum in comparison. However, when the counter service spot opened up again after its most recent refurbishment (no major changes to the guest area, other than the addition of Coke Freestyle machines), the dessert options had changed. And they’d been enhanced. Gasaprilla Island Grill entrance No longer relegated to a small row or two in the refrigerator, desserts now entirely take up a full bakery case next to the more traditional breakfast pastry selections. The cute-as-a-button Minnie Mouse Cupcake stands out right away. Minnie Mouse Cupcake She sits beside the Mickey Brownie. Mickey Brownie Both the Pina Colada Cupcake and German Chocolate Cupcake are still in the house. Pina Colada Cupcake German Chocolate Cupcake As is the cheerful Lemon Blueberry Cupcake. Lemon Blueberry Cupcake New offerings also include the Chocolate Mousse Pie and the Almond Fruit Tart. Chocolate Mousse Pie Almond Fruit Tart But I had my eye on the Coconut Pot de Creme. Coconut Pot de Creme It may not have the outstanding appearance of the Minnie Mouse Cake or the gorgeous Almond Fruit Tart, but I can’t resist anything that has “Coconut” listed as the primary ingredient. Coconut Pot de Creme And that coconut experience starts right from the top. They are a bit difficult to see against the peaks of whipped cream (dotted with vanilla bean seeds!), but large, fresh, unsweetened coconut flakes cover the dessert. Coconut Pot de Creme The coconut and whipped cream sit on top of a mildly sweetened vanilla and coconut custard. So, if you’re like me and don’t like a lot of other flavors competing with your coconut, you’ll probably dig this. Coconut Pot de Creme The shell is an exact match to the soft cookie-type shell of the Peanut Butter Pie over at the Contemporary. Only here, the custard has a rich, near-cheesecake consistency, as opposed to the pudding style of the custard in the Peanut Butter Pie. Coconut Pot de Creme And even though it’s not cheesecake, it resembles it even further in that it offers a mildly-sweet profile overall — matching the unsweetened coconut — rather than a super-sugary experience. No joke — if this was an offering as a dessert at a Signature Restaurant, I would be happy with it. Fortunately, at $4.99 (or a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan), you don’t have to pay signature prices for it. So, the Coconut Pot de Creme finally fills in my long empty spot for a Monorail Loop Dessert Crawl, with the Peanut Butter Pie at the Contemporary and a Pineapple and Vanilla Swirl Dole Whip at the Polynesian filling in the rest! Earlier today, thousands of Disney fans gathered at Epcot to celebrate the park’s 35th anniversary by watching a special ceremony that was highlighted with Disney characters, fun performances by the park’s most beloved musical acts and more. During the ceremony, George A. Kalogridis, president of Walt Disney World Resort, spoke, honoring the park’s past and sharing excitement for its future. “It’s been an amazing 35 years,” George said. “And as we look toward the future, there is so much more on the horizon.” George was also joined onstage by Voices of Liberty and the Mariachi Cobre – two musical groups that debuted when the theme park opened on Oct. 1, 1982. “Epcot has always been, and always will be, an optimistic celebration of the real world – brought to life through the magic of Disney,” George said. “I promise you the exciting plans we have on the horizon will honor Epcot’s rich legacy of creativity and innovation while continuing to exceed the expectations of our guests, for decades to come. “The spirit of the expansion will continue to evolve Epcot to make it more timeless, more relevant, more family and more Disney, while staying true to its original vision.” Already announced as part of this expansion is a new restaurant for the Mission: SPACE pavilion, inviting guests to dine above Earth, two new attractions inspired by “Ratatouille” and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, and an updated Circle-Vision film for the China pavilion in World Showcase that highlights the country’s splendor and majesty. The “Epcot Renaissance” has already begun with the updated Mission: SPACE attraction. Fountain View is also where you’ll find one of THREE Specialty Cupcakes that are available starting TODAY. The highest in demand is the Spaceship Earth Cupcake at Fountain View. Today, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club announced its new slate of events, and there’s more magic in store for fans all around the country than ever before. Starting with the parks, D23 will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of Disney’s Animal Kingdom with a special in-park event next April. Plus, the club will invite members to experience the new Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure park. In addition, the club will bring back its signature Sip & Stroll and holiday events to Walt Disney World Resort. As if that wasn’t enough, next November, at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, D23 will hold Destination D: Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse, a two-day party with panels, presentations, a pop-up shop from Mickey’s of Glendale, and an all-new exhibit from the Walt Disney Archives—all in honor of the 90th anniversary of the “leader of the club.” In addition, D23 will bring back its member screenings—including “Peter Pan,” “Robin Hood,” and “Mary Poppins”—as well as Lunch with a Disney Legend to both the Burbank Studio lot and Walt Disney World Resort. Exclusive tours of the Walt Disney Studios return, and members will be able to enjoy seeing Frozen on Broadway and Aladdin in Los Angeles. Today, we’re celebrating the 35th anniversary of Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort – and all week, we’ve been sharing stories leading up to the occasion, including exclusive artwork, early looks at special items and a surprise from our video vault. Our video featured the original “The Dream Called EPCOT” film and its look inside WED Enterprises during the “Imagineering” of EPCOT Center in the 1970s. It originally ran on a loop in the EPCOT Preview Center at Magic Kingdom Park as an introduction to a new kind of Disney theme park, showcasing exciting experiences in the park’s Future World and World Showcase areas.
