This holiday season will shine a little brighter for children in Central Florida, thanks to the efforts of Walt Disney World Resort cast members, who collected nearly 30,000 toys for this year’s U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive. There was no better way to continue celebrating the 35th anniversary of our Disney VoluntEARs program than by delivering these special holiday toys and gifts in style. Earlier this season, 35 Disney VoluntEARs, alongside our new Walt Disney World Resort Ambassador team, helped to deliver some of the toys to the local Toys for Tots distribution warehouse … and in true Disney fashion, the toys were delivered in a distinctly Disney way—via Minnie Vans! And that’s not all. Over the next few weeks, our VoluntEARs will continue making magic at the warehouse by helping to sort and distribute the toys to the families of some of our youngest Central Florida neighbors. Tonight’s “After Dark” image offers up a beautiful holiday scene at Magic Kingdom Park. Here, the park’s Partners Statue is surrounded by beautiful poinsettias with a glittering Cinderella Castle in the background. You can watch the castle come “to light” every night at the park during the seasonal “A Frozen Holiday Wish” stage show. In this show, royal sisters Anna, Olaf and Kristoff urge Queen Elsa to use her magical powers to present a gift to everyone in the kingdom. The result? This Saturday, Dec. 8, share the spirit of the season at the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort by donating a new, unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more to Toys for Tots. The donation bins will be located near the Downtown Disney District LIVE! stage. U.S. Marines will be on hand to collect toy donations from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Disney is a founding sponsor of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program. Since then, Disneyland Resort guests and cast members have donated more than 100,000 toys to Toys for Tots! Need a toy to donate? I’ve often heard that the third time’s the charm, and when it comes to The Disney Springs Christmas Tree Trail, I’m pretty sure it’s true! Back for its third year at Disney Springs Marketplace, the limited-time holiday tradition now boasts 27 trees, including five new themes – my favorite tree of the trail among them! If you haven’t yet had a chance to visit, you’ve got plenty of time. The experience — which includes falling snow, holiday music and unexpected food and beverage offerings like frozen hot chocolate and specialty cotton candy – will be available through January 6, 2019. If you’re most interested in checking out what’s new, below are the trees to keep an eye out for: Disney Springs: With fun “gift tags” representing the wide array of locations at Disney Springs, this tree offers great inspiration on where to shop and dine! Make sure to save time for both as there’s a lot to discover including recent product releases and brand-new restaurants. (My motto this year is “Gifts for everyone, including yourself!”) Haunted Mansion: While they’re all impressive, I was completely blown away by the detail of the Haunted Mansion tree, my new favorite, complete with a ghostly, glowing bride that will feel familiar to anyone who loves the classic attraction. It’s spooky, and certainly not traditional, but that’s what I like about it – it feels a bit unexpected in the midst of this winter wonderland. Star Wars: Flanked by two smaller trees to represent the “dark side” and the “light side” (one is adorned with red lights, the other with blue), plus a variety of ornaments featuring everything from miniature Jawas to tie fighters to the rebel alliance emblem, the Star Wars-inspired tree is a visual delight for aficionados of the film. No star required, it’s topped by a lightsaber, making it a show-stopper even for casual fans of the franchise, including yours truly. “Toy Story”: Toy Story Land opened earlier this year at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the trailer for “Toy Story 4” has already amassed millions of views. It’s safe to say that interest in “Toy Story” is still strong, so this tree was a perfect addition! In a mash-up that includes Woody’s Sheriff badge, Slinky Dog, little green men, the Pixar ball, garland made of “paper” rings, and more, this tree offers a playful punch that will remind you of your grade school days – at least that’s what it did for me! The Walt Disney World Theme Parks: Look for icons representing each of the four Walt Disney World Theme Parks (Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios) and marvel at the miniature monorail circling the tree. Colorful flare at the top of the tree gave me visions of our spectacular fireworks displays, which has me thinking that I need to plan a mid-December visit to Magic Kingdom Park to see “Holiday Wishes” – one of my favorite shows! New this year, look for lanterns on each tree that showcase featured ornaments available for purchase at the nearby Disney’s Days of Christmas shop, available while supplies last. Also take note of the signage on the walls – they offer up clever nods to many of the beloved stories, attractions and characters represented in the Disney Springs Christmas Tree Trail. For the ultimate visit, wear your Disney Jingle Bell Light Up Holiday necklace as you meander through the experience – with multiple light settings, you’ll be as festive as the fully decorated trees. (Bonus: Day or night, it’s a great conversation starter; I’m speaking from experience here!) Find the necklace at World of Disney or other select locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort. We have exciting news today! The dates for the 2019 Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival have been announced! The Festival will run from March 1 through April 23, 2019! Get ready for the 2019 Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival! Expanding to eight weeks, the Festival will host more than a dozen Festival Marketplaces serving California-inspired dishes and beverages. The 2019 Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival will run from March 6-June 3, 2019. The event will bring back its signature topiary displays, Outdoor Kitchens, and more! Epcot Flower and Garden Festival One big part of the “and more” is the popular Garden Rocks Concert Series. And its about to get even bigger because — as previously announced — the Garden Rocks concerts will expand to seven days a week for 2019! Popular bands spanning the decades take the stage at the American Gardens Theater in the American Adventure Pavilion in Epcot to share some of their greatest hits with the crowds! We’re thrilled to share with you a sneak peek at the new Enchanted Tale of “Beauty and the Beast” attraction coming to Tokyo Disneyland as part of a large-scale development plan bringing new attractions, entertainment, shopping and dining to the park in spring 2020. Earlier today, the resort shared this inside look along with announcing the names of the many new offerings guests can soon enjoy at Tokyo Disneyland. The centerpiece of a new area themed to “Beauty and the Beast” in Fantasyland, Beauty and the Beast Castle will tower nearly 98 feet above the surrounding area and house the Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast, a new attraction inviting guests to step into the animated film aboard ride vehicles that dance in rhythm to the film’s music. The nearby Village Shoppes and La Taverne de Gaston will further allow guests to explore the world of the film and enjoy the ambience of Belle’s village. Also opening in the new area, the Fantasyland Forest Theatre will feature signature Disney entertainment in a dedicated indoor performance space. Productions featuring Disney characters and music are sure to delight guests of all ages in the 1,500-seat storybook theater. Over in Tomorrowland, The Happy Ride with Baymax attraction will celebrate the “Big Hero 6” fan-favorite, as guests join their own personal healthcare companion for an exciting musical whip ride set to swing them round and round. A new shop themed to outer space, The Big Pop, will offer popcorn in multiple flavors, along with Tokyo Disneyland’s popular popcorn buckets. Located in Toontown, Minnie’s Style Studio will be the first Disney character greeting location in Tokyo Disneyland where guests can meet Minnie Mouse, dressed in her own fashionable creations to say hello and take photos. All of these new offerings will debut in spring 2020 as part of the resort’s large-scale expansion plan. On Sunday, Disney Food Blog had the opportunity to celebrate the 12 Beers of Christmas at Morimoto Asia in Disney Springs! This special, once-a-year event was hosted by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto himself. Crooked Can Brewing Company Black Frost Schwarzbier Guests made their way through 12 stations featuring local beers and Pan-Asian small bites. Ready to start planning your visit for next year’s event? Overview 12 Beers of Christmas was held at the beautiful Morimoto Asia restaurant in The Landing neighborhood at Disney Springs, and the event ran from 11:30 AM – 3:30 PM. Morimoto Asia This was a very popular event, and guests started to line up around 11:00 AM. Upon entering, each guest was given a miniature 12 Beers of Christmas beer glass to use at each station throughout the event. Morimoto Asia Chef Morimoto’s new cookbook, Mastering the Art of Japanese Home Cooking, was available to purchase at the event, and proceeds went to Give Kids The World. The Iron Chef signed cookbooks and t-shirts, and as you can see, he brought plenty of holiday cheer. Chef Masaharu Morimoto Let’s get to the stations, shall we!? Takoyaki The Takoyaki station featured traditional-style Japanese octopus center. Takoyaki Station Along with octopus, Takoyaki fritters included tempura and pickled ginger. (Pssst: want to give Takoyaki a try? You can currently find it on the menu at Morimoto Street Food!) Takoyaki The beer pairing for this station was WinterWeizen from 3 Daughters Brewing, which is based in St. Pete, FL. WinterWeizen is a German-style specialty wheat beer that’s only available during the month of December. 3 Daughters Brewing Yakitori At the Yakitori station, we found Momo (dumplings), Tsukune (chicken meatballs), Teba (Japanese-style chicken wings), and Shishito (peppers). Yakitori The Tsukune was definitely the standout at this station! These chicken meatballs were tiny but had a ton of flavor and a really nice, crisp texture. Crooked Can Brewing Company Black Frost Schwarzbier The Yakitori was paired with Crooked Can Brewing Company Black Frost Schwarzbier. Crooked Can is based in Winter Garden, Florida. Crooked Can Brewing Company Black Frost Schwarzbier This was one of our favorite beers at the event, too! Black Frost was nice and smooth with a just hint of espresso. Ramen We were pretty excited for this one! The Duck Ramen was super flavorful and so nice for this time of year. If you’re not a fan of duck, though, it might not be for you. Red Cypress Brewery Spook Hill Pale Ale and Duck Ramen The accompanying beer was Spook Hill Pale Ale from Red Cypress Brewery in Winter Springs, Florida. Just like the Duck Ramen, Spook Hill Pale Ale also has tons of flavor. It’s an intensely citrusy, extra-hoppy IPA. Red Cypress Brewery Morimoto Spare Ribs Said to be “the best ribs you’ll ever have” and “so tender the meat just falls off the bone,” we were excited to find Morimoto Spare Ribs at the next station. Morimoto Spare Ribs The ribs were indeed very tender, and Chef Morimoto’s sweet hoisin chili sauce gave the meat a lovely flavor that was sweet, salty, and just a little spicy. Morimoto Spare Ribs The Spare Ribs were paired with Morimoto Imperial Pilsner from Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon. The representative from Rogue described Morimoto Imperial Pilsner as being smooth, having a slightly floral flavor, and pairing well with every dish served at 12 Beers of Christmas. Note: the station signage lists the beer as Rogue Soba Ale, but we were served Rogue Morimoto Imperial Pilsner. Rogue Morimoto Imperial Pilsner Peking Duck How gorgeous is this!? The Morimoto-style Peking Duck was presented with pancake, hoisin, and apricot chili. Peking Duck If you’re into the distinctive flavor of duck, you’ll love the juicy meat and crispy skin. Peking Duck The beer at this station was one of the event’s more unique offerings: Coffee Gold from Cask and Larder in Orlando, Florida. It was sharp, a bit bitter, and had a pronounced coffee flavor. If you’re a fan of beer and coffee, you might just love Coffee Gold. Cask & Larder Coffee Gold Trivia time: Cask and Larder belongs to the same family of restaurants as The Polite Pig at Disney Springs! Tacos Next, tacos! These weren’t just any tacos, though: they were tacos with a Pan-Asian twist! Taco Station The BBQ pork and kalbi (Korean BBQ beef) were just a little spicy, and it made for such a nice combination with the light, crisp taco shells. Tacos The beer? Seasonal Relief from Coppertail Brewing Co. in Tampa, Florida. It’s a Baltic Porter brewed with goji berries. You might taste a hint of chocolate, too! Coppertail Brewing Co. Seasonal Relief Yakisoba If we had to pick a favorite station, Yakisoba would definitely be one of the top contenders. Yakisoba Station These noodles were not only delicious, but they had the perfect texture, too. The cabbage added a pleasant crunch. Yakisoba The Yakisoba came paired with another unusual-to-us beer: Green Tea IPA from Orange County Brewers in Orlando, Florida. Orange County Brewers Green Tea IPA The green tea notes and IPA flavors were both very strong, and this was one interesting beer! Green Tea IPA would be just as refreshing on a hot summer day as it was on this winter afternoon. Orange County Brewers Green Tea IPA Gyoza and Dimsum The Gyoza and Dimsum station offered several varieties of dumplings filled with chicken, shrimp, and pork. Dimsum sauce and chili sauce were optional. Gyoza and Dimsum The accompanying beer came from Bowigens Brew Company in Casselberry, Florida. We bet you won’t forget its name: Punch Face Champion. The brewery described it as a “hoppy American wheat.” Bowigens Brew Company Punch Face Champion Okonomiyaki Throughout the event, there was always a crowd at the Okonomiyaki station. Okonomiyaki Station Okonomiyaki are savory seafood pancakes. Don’t they look tempting!? Okonomiyaki The seafood pancakes were paired with Baird Beer Jubilation Ale. Baird Beer is based in Numazu, Japan. They describe Jubilation Ale as complex and figgy with a hint of cinnamon. The Baird Beer booth also brought some delicious-sounding cherry wine, and the guests at 12 Beers of Christmas must have agreed, because it was all gone by the time we got there. We may or may not be a little sad about missing it. Cherry Wine at the Baird Beer booth Sushi To complement flavors at the sushi station, Hourglass Brewing from Longwood, Florida, brought in their Saison du Sablier. Fermented in an oak barrel, Saison du Sablier is a dry, Belgian-style beer. Sushi Station The sushi station was undoubtedly the most popular station with the guests at 12 Beers of Christmas. Assorted Nigiri and Maki Assorted varieties of nigiri and maki were presented beautifully. Assorted Nigiri and Maki Raw Bar Meanwhile, at the Raw Bar, we found oysters, shrimp cocktail, and ceviche. Shrimp Cocktail The foods at the raw bar were presented so artfully, and just like the sushi station, it was very popular with guests! Shrimp Cocktail For the beer pairing, Redlight Redlight from Orlando, Florida brought Dama en Gris. Redlight Redlight Dama en Gris Dama en Gris is a light, European-style beer (Grisette). The Redlight Redlight team described it as light and lemony, similar to a Saison. Redlight Redlight Dama en Gris Dessert If we were picking favorites, the Dessert station would definitely be in the ranks! Dessert Station These miniature churros might just have been our favorite food from the entire day. They were warm with crisp, cinnamony exteriors and soft, pillowy interiors. Mini Churros The Miniature Chocolate Cream and Yuzu Desserts were just as delicious as they were adorable. Mini Chocolate Cream How cute is that!? So detailed! So tiny! Mini Yuzu Dessert Midnight Espresso from Motoworks Brewing in Bradenton, Florida was the beer pairing for the dessert station. Motorworks Brewing Espresso Porter The flavors of espresso and chocolate were strong without being overwhelming. We wouldn’t be able to drink a lot of this one, but it was a nice pick for the desserts. Motorworks Brewing Espresso Porter And that’s everything we tried at Morimoto Asia’s 12 Beers of Christmas! Final Thoughts Should you make an effort to attend Morimoto Asia’s 12 Beers of Christmas next year? If you’re really into beer – especially uncommon beers from local craft breweries – it’s probably something you’ll enjoy. Similarly, if you’re a fan of Chef Morimoto or Pan-Asian cuisine, it’s a great opportunity to try a variety of small bites and to experience the restaurant’s gorgeous interiors. Kitchen at Morimoto Asia Tickets were $55, and guests were not limited in the number of times they could visit each booth. That’s right – if there’s something you love, you can have it more than once! Keep in mind, though, that some of the more popular booths did run out of some foods and drinks. If there’s something you absolutely have to have, hit that booth first. Morimoto Asia Tables and seating were limited at 12 Beers of Christmas, and it got a little challenging to maneuver our beer glass, our food, and our utensils. Also, lines got long — it was a little stressful! We recommend going with a small group of friends, arriving early, and grabbing a table. That way, you can rotate having one person at the table while the others visit booths, and you’ll never have to worry about having a place to set your beer or your food. View from Morimoto Asia 12 Beers of Christmas is an adults-only event, and you must be 21 or older to attend. If you’re looking for a family-friendly outing at Disney Springs, this isn’t it, BUT there are plenty of other great options for you. In our Disney Doodle series, different Disney artists take turns imagining what different Disney characters would do or see first if they had the chance to visit a Disney Park. In today’s Disney Doodle, artist Ashley Taylor imagines what Cinderella and Prince Charming would do if they could visit Magic Kingdom Park. In commemoration of Walt Disney’s birthday, today’s Walk in the Park visits some of the spots Walt loved at Disneyland park. Walt was famous for his early morning strolls through Disneyland park. He’d inspect, make notes, chat-up the cast, and refine his magic kingdom every chance he got. This ritual was immortalized in an iconic photographed as Walt strolled through the arches of Sleeping Beauty Castle. The picture came to be known as “Footsteps.” See my take on “Footsteps” above. Walt, ever the railroad enthusiast, was often photographed at the controls of a steam engine. That legacy lives on aboard the Disneyland Railroad. I love that there’s a framed photograph of Walt and his wife, Lillian, forever circling the park in the comfort of their custom passenger car: Lilly Belle. Walt once said: “I think what I want Disneyland to be most of all is a happy place–a place where adults and children can experience together some of the wonders of life, of adventure, and feel better because of it.” You feel as if that dream has been actualized as you watch families kick off their Disney day along Main Street, U.S.A. Walt had an apartment constructed for himself atop the Main Street Fire Station. Cast knew the boss was around when they saw the lamp lit in his apartment window. We have kept that lamp lit since the day he passed as a reminder that Walt is always around and, for the holidays, that lamp has been replaced by a lit Christmas tree. Our latest visit to Disney World saw us adding one more tumbler to our Disney Parks Starbucks Tumblers Collection. This time we spotted the brand new Hollywood Studios Starbucks Tumbler in Trolley Car Cafe. Starbucks Hollywood Studios Tumbler This tumbler is jam packed with images and references to rides and attractions in the park, just like the designs on the Epcot and Animal Kingdom versions of the tumbler in this collection. There’s of course the cutest Sorcerer we know, Sorcerer Mickey, on there along with references to the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, Star Wars, and Fantasmic nighttime show. Starbucks Hollywood Studios Tumbler Plus, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Toy Story Land, Slinky Dog Dash, and Toy Story Mania! are featured. And, that doesn’t include the Mickey Ears, Mickey Ice Cream Bar, Movie Clapperboard, film strip, stars, and art nouveau hints all over the design! Now, there is a brand new offering for guests staying at the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort: A Grand Gingerbread House Experience, where you can build your own miniature version to take home. Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ is serving up some new dishes with southern style! Chef Art Smith Under Starters, new on the menu are Hot Legs! Four hand-breaded chicken legs (tossed in Homecomin’s Fresno pepper hot sauce) are served lollipop-style. These take the place of the Ham and Cheese Biscuits. A new Cuban Sandwich with house-smoked pork, shaved country ham, house made pickles and Swiss Cheese is available under “Buns & Such,” taking the place of the Barbecue Pork Bun. Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ Moving on to “Salads & Such,” a winter Farmhouse Salad has replaced the Spinach & Kale Chopped Salad. The new salad is topped with house-smoked turkey, pecan-smoked bacon, dried cranberries, roasted butternut squash, apples, red onions, gorgonzola cheese and sugared pecans with creamy poppy seed dressing. Get ready to customize your pizza once again at Napolini in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District! This grab-and-go location next to Naples Ristorante is now reopen after a refurbishment. Napolini ©Disney Sandwiches, salads, and Italian desserts and up for grabs, but the spotlight is on Build-Your-Own Pizzas. Topping options include Italian sausage, Parma ham, roasted chicken, pepperoni, smoked provolone, broccolini, arugula, black and green olives, artichokes, roasted red peppers and pineapple, among others. Napolini ©Disney If you’d rather go with a Napolini Signature Pizza, notable options include the Brinner (Breakfast and Dinner) Pizza topped with Fontina, mozzarella, potato, bacon, and egg and the Vesuvio which includes Calabrian Chili Pepper among the toppings. California, Capri, Amalfi, and Roman are also choices.
