I’ve loved basketball since I was little, and like millions of other kids around the world, I dreamed of what it would be like to play in the NBA. The plastic hoop in my parents’ basement was the scene of countless slam-dunk competitions, as I mimicked the high-flying moves of my favorite players. In summer 2019, NBA Experience will open at Disney Springs and allow kids of all ages (including yours truly) the chance to live out those dreams in a whole new way. Developed by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with the NBA, this one-of-a-kind destination will feature hands-on activities that highlight the action and excitement of professional basketball. NBA Experience will be full of thrills, whether you’re a lifelong fan like me or you’re brand new to the game. When you step inside this immersive environment next year, you will: Experience one of the biggest milestones for a basketball player at the NBA Draft with a photo moment that re-creates the atmosphere of the draft stage. Track and improve their jump shots and passing skills in a replicated NBA Combine challenge, complete with a scouting report that highlights their stats at the end of the session. Step onto the court and hear the roar of the crowd as they maneuver through a series of timed shots to aim for a high score. Execute the perfect slam dunk just like NBA superstars, captured by cameras surrounding adjustable baskets. Test their ball-handling skills with an interactive trainer who will challenge them with a variety of dribbling routines. Use an oversized slingshot to launch basketballs at hoops of varying heights, making as many shots as possible before the clock runs out in this thrilling timed challenge. Immerse themselves in the rich legacy and history of NBA and WNBA championship-winning teams. Access a team locker room that showcases up-to-date statistics and visuals of top NBA and WNBA players. Test their knowledge of the NBA and WNBA – past and present – during a trivia game with up to 25 participants competing against one another to be champion. Enjoy two 180-degree cinematic presentations that showcase the in-arena experience moments before the start of the game, as well as special stories from the players’ perspectives. Take a seat at an interactive multi-screen module to watch replay clips from NBA games, using the tools at their stations to make the right calls. Coming off yet another Grammy© nomination this week, Bart Milliard, lead singer of the Contemporary Christian group MercyMe, also made his debut as a celebrity narrator at this year’s Candlelight Processional, part of the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays. As the lead singer of one of the most beloved Contemporary Christian groups of all time, MercyMe, Millard’s vocals have been heard on millions of records including the biggest selling Christian song of all time – “I Can Only Imagine.” Millard also scored big this year with a movie of his life, called – of course – “I Can Only Imagine.” Millard, who has spent part of his life in Central Florida, is a huge fan of Walt Disney World and Epcot, but had never visited during the holidays. We caught up with him before a performance and asked him about his experience this year as narrator, exciting times for MercyMe and his personal family holiday traditions. Pretzel lovers rejoice! Wetzel’s Pretzels, an innovator of soft, fresh-baked pretzels, has returned to the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort after an extensive renovation. Wetzel’s celebrated its grand re-opening today with a deejay, festivities and a giant pretzel wall game, plus its famous pretzels you know and love! This flagship store features a California-inspired design with an indoor-outdoor feel and a modern, upscale look. Wetzel’s commissioned two local artists: Trek Thunder Kelly and Dan Medina. Kelly, known for his large-scale murals—including the Sky Mural in Venice Beach—painted a mural that wraps around the inside of the store with images of Pasadena, Wetzel’s hometown, and 25 hidden pretzels as a nod to Wetzel’s 25th anniversary. Medina, known for his bronze sculptures, such as the Antonio Aguilar monument in Los Angeles, designed custom door handles that create a pretzel when the doors are closed. What’s your perfect pretzel? Is it the Cheese Meltdown, a Pepperoni Twist, a Wetzel Dog, a Cin-A-Bitz or the Original? As we look over the 2018 Disney Year in Review, one classic location that has seen a few changes this year is The Plaza Restaurant in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Originally it was only to be offered through early January. Then, Advance Dining Reservations were extended into early March. Breakfast at The Plaza Restaurant And now, interested guests can currently book breakfast at The Plaza Restaurant through June 1, 2019! Plaza Restaurant Breakfast Menu Breakfast As a reminder, the breakfast offerings include traditional items such as the All-American Classic Breakfast Platter and Steak and Eggs. What’s even sweeter than a sugar cube? A Mickey-shaped sugar cube! Mickey Sugar Cubes That’s right — at Flying Fish and several other table service restaurants this week — we spotted Mickey Mouse-shaped sugar cubes. Aren’t they adorable!? This was our first time seeing these cuties, and the Cast Members we spoke to in Disney World hadn’t seen them before, either. We did hear from a Disneyland cast member friend that they’d been on tables there for a few months. These sugar cubes are definitely the cutest way to sweeten your coffee or tea. 2019 is going to be a big year for Disney parks. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is opening at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, plus an all-new Skyliner transportation system will begin operating at Walt Disney World! Walt Disney World Restaurants Disney’s Hollywood Studios Restaurants When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens, guests won’t just get to enjoy Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – we’ll get to experience two new dining opportunities on planet Batuu! Galaxy’s Edge Concept Art © Disney First up: Oga’s Cantina. Here, you can expect to find Blue Milk, themed cocktails, and non-alcoholic specialty drinks. Don’t forget about the Cantina entertainment, either: RX-24 (Captain Rex from the original Star Tours) will serve as the DJ. Blue Milk We don’t know the name of other dining experience in Galaxy’s Edge yet, but we do know it will a supper club-style table service restaurant with a dinner show! This new land is expected to open in “late fall” 2019. Disney Springs Restaurants Meanwhile, two new restaurants are scheduled to open at Disney Springs in 2019. For sports fans and craft beer enthusiasts, City Works Eatery and Pour House will be a dream come true. Experience more than 80 beers on tap and sporting events displayed on a giant 160″ screen. Scheduled to open on Disney Springs’s West Side in the summer of 2019. City Works Eatery & Pour House Concept Art ©Disney Jaleo, Chef Jose Andres’s first Florida restaurant, will focus on authentic Spanish fare like tapas and paella. Jaleo was originally scheduled to open in late 2018; however, now we’re anticipating an early 2019 opening. Jaleo Construction Progress The NBA Experience has another slam dunk for sports fans! An immersive, basketball-themed restaurant will be opening sometime during the summer of 2019. NBA Experience Construction Walt Disney World Resort Hotel Restaurants Gran Destino Tower at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort will welcome Toledo – Tapas, Steak & Seafood in the summer of 2019. At Toledo, you can look forward to a signature rooftop dining experience along with fireworks views! Gran Destino Tower © Disney Reservations at Gran Destino Tower are available for booking starting July 9, 2019, and we’ll be keeping an eye out for when Advance Dining Reservations open for Toledo! A more casual dining location, Three Bridges Bar and Grill (originally called Villa del Lago), will also be opening at Coronado Springs Resort during the summer of 2019, too! Three Bridges Bar and Grill will be located at the center of Lago Dorado, the 14 acre lake the resort surrounds. Based on recent job postings, though, we’re probably looking at sometime in 2020. Downtown Disney Restaurants Ballast Point, one of the country’s leading craft breweries, will be opening a branch in Disneyland‘s Downtown Disney District in early 2019. You can look forward to a seasonally-inspired menu that’s specially curated to pair with Ballast Point‘s beers! A new behind-the-scenes tour is now available for booking at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom… and this one involves “VIP tastings of iconic menu items”! We recently caught up with actor Josh Gad during his family vacation at the Disneyland Resort during the most magical time of the year! On his way to some of his favorite attractions in Disneyland park, Gad stopped by Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle – all adorned for the holidays – for a special moment with Goofy that included some warm hugs and laughs, of course. One of her best tips is to download the event guide/guide map. “I tell everyone to use this guide to make your party plans, find character meet and greet spots, dining locations and participating attractions. Without the guide, you might miss something!” she exclaims. “There are so many merry-must-dos at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party that it feels easier to count the ice sparkles on Cinderella Castle than it is to pack all the possible magical merriment into just one party evening. However, one of my top tips is to sip, savor and snack your way around Magic Kingdom Park to sample all the yummy (and complimentary!) treats,” explains Jerry. “You can also shout out with glee while enjoying your favorite attractions available with shorter wait times during the party.” If you are looking for characters decked out in their holiday best, this party does not disappoint. “Moana is often greeting Guests during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Since she doesn’t have a regularly scheduled Character Experience at Walt Disney World Resort, she was definitely on my “must-do” list for our trip to the party!” says Crystal. “I recommend that you visit her early in the night or during one of the parade times, as she is very popular. Also, this a great photo opportunity and another reason to add Memory Maker to trip!
