  2. Join us as we check out the new Ballast Point in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District! Welcome to Ballast Point Ballast Point is a San Diego-based brewing company, and its new location in the Downtown Disney District is its first in Orange County. Ballast Point And Ballast Point delivers another first as well, as this the very first onsite brewery — complete with a tasting room, a kitchen, and an outdoor beer garden — in the Downtown Disney District. Though the official Grand Opening will take place this coming Wednesday, January 16th, Ballast Point is currently in soft openings. So if you go by before Wednesday you’ll likely find it open! Ballast Point That’s what our Disneyland Correspondent, Heather Sievers (@diningindisney on Instagram) did, so we can show you around! Atmosphere The location is huge, encompassing 7,000 square feet. You can’t miss it at its spot across from Catal Restaurant and Uva Bar, by day or night… Ballast Point at Night Let’s step on in… and up! Ballast Point Ballast Point There are two main elements equally at play in the design. One is the nautical theming, which is on display throughout in classic ship pieces as well as bright and vivid artwork. Nautical design Nautical design Some of the nautical nods are more whimsical… Nautical design (Check out this beer bottle light fixture!) Nautical design … while others show the more dangerous side of a life at sea with some of the Ballast Point signature art. Nautical design Nautical design Nautical design The other element factoring into the setting is the fact that the Anaheim spot is a three-barrel “research and development” brewery. Ballast Point Ballast Point Ballast Point Ballast Point You’ll never forget the specialty of the house… Ballast Point Ballast Point As for seating, the indoor dining room is the spot where people with reservations will be placed at tables. Table seating Table seating There is also a seat-yourself bar. Indoor Bar But the rooftop patio — with its own bar and lounge area — might be my favorite spot. Here’s a look before the sun was setting. Rooftop Bar and Lounge area And here it is again, a bit later. Rooftop Bar and Lounge Note that the outdoor lounge is first come, first served in regards to seating. A merchandise shop is also present to commemorate your visit and the brews. Merchandise Merchandise Merchandise Though parents can keep in mind that this spot is absolutely family friendly and welcoming to the “Little Explorers”… Kids’ Menu … there is no doubt that the general feel brings a hip, adult vibe to the Downtown Disney District along with it! Eats and Drinks The menu at Ballast Point is and will continue to be seasonally-inspired, featuring items that are created with beer pairing in mind! Ballast Point Menu Because in addition to award-winning beers, Ballast Point guests can also enjoy Southern California cuisine made with a focus on seasonal, local ingredients. (Ballast Point also refers to their style as offering New American cuisine.) Here is the above menu divided into sections, starting with Plates to Share and Salads & Flatbreads. Plates to Share Salads and Flatbreads Entrees include Sandwich & Burger selections and Mains. Sandwiches & Burgers Mains And, of course, there are a couple of sweet items on hand for dessert. Desserts Guests can expect to find anywhere from 30 to 50 beers on tap at any time. These include limited edition brews exclusive to Downtown Disney. The menu is divided into sections starting with Hops, Hops, & More Hops; Rich & Malty; and Crisp & Bright. (Just click any of the menu images to enlarge for easier reading.) Beer Menu Beer Menu Small Batch Specialties and Tart & Sour are up next. The Small Batch Specialties are part of the “Roots to Boots” Research & Development program, which gives employees the chance to experiment with the ingredients, as noted on the menu. If the brew is a hit, it may become a new beer on the menu, so “vote with your glass!” Beer Menu Barrel Aged options complete the current list, and note that a Flight of any four is an option as well. Beer Menu Wine is also available. Wine menu Heather and her family enjoyed some Plates to Share, which included the Bavarian Pretzel. Bavarian Pretzel It’s served with “Sculpin” beer cheese and “Fathom” beer mustard for dipping. Bavarian Pretzel Heather noted that all of the food came “fast and fresh,” which was especially impressive given the large crowds ready to pay the new location a visit, and the fact that new restaurants often have an adjustment period for the first few days. A highlight of the Plates to Share was the House Made Pimento Cheese. House Made Pimento Cheese Plate It’s accompanied with chicharrones (pork rinds), grilled bread, and bread & butter pickles. House Made Pimento Cheese Plate The highly addictive, creamy and substantial pimento cheese was “incredible.” House Made Pimento Cheese House Made Pimento Cheese BP Wings can be ordered in your choice of three serving styles: Spicy Sculpin Buffalo Glaze with blue cheese sauce, Bourbon and Brown Sugar with ranch, or in a Crispy Dry Rub with southern style comeback sauce. BP Wings with Crispy Dry Rub The crispy dry rub is a great choice for sharing because those who don’t care for the spice from a buffalo glaze can still share with those who appreciate some of that kick from the spicy comeback sauce! BP Wings with Crispy Dry Rub There is yet another standout from the Plates to Share, though. (And the shareable plates here really are a fun way to go if you’re grabbing some friends and some seats on the patio to relax and linger for an evening.) Among your order, you’ll for sure want to consider the Impossible Lettuce Cups. Impossible Lettuce Cups This is plated with “Impossible” (plant-based) protein and peppers with hydroponic lettuce, which has an unbelievably clean, bright, and fresh flavor that is the signature of lettuce that’s never touched soil. Hydroponic Lettuce Heather especially loved the plum sauce (hoison, on the menu), and chose to totally drench the wraps in it because it added so much terrific taste. Sauce Impossible Lettuce Cups By the way, if you look again at the menu, you’ll notice that Ballast Point has plenty of other options for vegetarian guests, as well as those who are gluten free. Moving into Burgers & Sandwiches, Heather’s kids loved — and “completely devoured” — the California “Kolsch” Steak Burrito. California “Kolsch” Steak Burrito The meat is seasoned with a Santa Maria style dry rub and wrapped up with guac, pico de gallo, and cheddar cheese. Oh, and there are a ton of French Fries in there, too! California “Kolsch” Steak Burrito Finally, the Ballast Point Burger (which is served alongside a Smokey Blue Burger and a the plant-based “Impossible” Burger) takes a 7 oz chuck and brisket blend patty and tops it with sharp cheddar, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles and remoulade on a brioche bun. The Ballast Point Burger It’s served with fries. Fries on the side With the remoulade lending its hints of spice, it’s a classic meal that’s done very nicely here. The Ballast Point Burger Which makes sense, because what can beat a burger with a beer? According to Heather, all of the food was fantastic, and her family can’t wait to return. And though you may see crowds when you first arrive (and likely will for the foreseeable future well beyond opening weeks), it’s worth noting that the large space — which was indeed packed — also provided quick turnover with food that arrived quickly, so the service is already going well. That said, for those who want to relax a little longer on the patio, that’s an option, too! Overall Ballast Point is a pretty terrific addition to the still-transforming Downtown Disney District. It offers great eats paired with a huge and unique beer selection in what’s sure to be a pretty huge hangout spot for both vacation guests and locals. And we say, “Welcome!” Of course, this isn’t the last you’ll see of us here in Downtown Disney. There are still new additions on the way, with Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer also coming this year. 3. If you think you’re seeing purple in the Disney Parks (and DFB!), that’s because you are. Purple Potion everything has taken over! Purple is the latest color trend to find its way into food, drinks, and merchandise at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. And at Disney California Adventure Park’s Lamplight Lounge (on the totally fun Pixar Pier!!) the menu now has two funky purple options! Many thanks to @DisneyObserver on Instagram for sharing these pics with us! (Don’t forget to tag @DisneyFoodBlog so we can see what you’re up to in the Disney Parks!) The Purple Potion menu items at Lamplight Lounge include Berry Berry Purple Cobbler and the Purple Potion Holiday Drink! Purple Potion at Lamplight Lounge The Berry Berry Purple Cobbler starts with a berry cobbler base that’s topped with blueberry cream cheese ice cream and berry sauce that’s packed with blueberries and cranberries! It’s served warm so there’s looooooots of melting going on. But how awesome does this look? Yes, please! Purple Potion Cobbler The Purple Potion Holiday Drink seems to have, you know, outlasted the holidays. But we’re glad because this isn’t just some fun-colored drink. It’s color-changing! Purple Potion Color-Changing Drink The Purple Potion Holiday Drink consists of Redemption Rye Whiskey, Ginger Infused Simple Syrup, and Butterfly Pea Tea. It’s that last ingredient that reacts with the shot of lemon juice you get alongside the beautiful purple/blue drink. Purple Potion Color-Changing Drink Pour in the lemon juice, and watch the color-changing reaction! The indig0-colored drink transforms… Purple Potion Color-Changing Drink …into this lovely opaque purple beverage! How cool! (You’ll recall the color-changing noodles from last spring’s Pixar Fest perform similarly!) @DisneyObserver notes that this drink is pretty sweet — despite that sour lemon juice — making it easy to drink (dangrously so!). Purple Potion Color-Changing Drink Yup, turns out there’s no such thing as too much purple. And we’re totally IN IT for themed eats and drinks! Want to stay on top of all the Disney news? 4. Good news made its way throughout the country to 100 teens who recently learned they were selected for a once-in-a-lifetime, life-altering experience: the Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE Magazine at Walt Disney World Resort, March 21 – 24. Now in its 12th year, this awesome program inspires teens to dream big, while providing the tools to achieve those dreams. During the four-day event, the teens are challenged to “Be100,” an aspirational mindset that encourages the students to be 100 percent “all in,” to make the most of their opportunities, relentlessly pursue and realize their dreams, and positively make a difference in the lives of others. The 100 high schoolers, along with a parent or guardian, will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Walt Disney World Resort, where they will hear from notable speakers, engage in immersive career-oriented workshops and learn important life skills such as communication, leadership and networking. It all takes place amidst the backdrop of the Walt Disney World theme parks, another inspiration for what one individual’s big dreams can accomplish. TV host and comedian Steve Harvey serves as the event’s master of ceremonies and motivational speaker, along with other notable personalities. Previous celebrity participants include “Good Morning America” co-host Michael Strahan; actor and recording artist Jussie Smollett; stars of ABC TV’s “black-ish” Marsai Martin and Miles Brown; Grammy Award-winning recording artist Ne-Yo and NBA legend Magic Johnson. To see a full list of the 100 students participating in the 2019 Disney Dreamers Academy, visit www.DisneyDreamersAcademy.com. 7. Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is off and *ahem* running, and official banana sponsor Chiquita will be supporting runners and doing a little something for the planet at the same time! That’s because Chiquita-branded waste bins will be placed in the runDisney finish line at race events for the purpose of collecting discarded banana peels. ©Chiquita Chiquita expects up to 14 tons of peels to be recycled during the entire race season. Those peels will be converted into electricity and fertilizer, thus diverting those 28,000 pounds of peels from landfills! We’d like to divert the bananas themselves as well. Directly into ‘Ohana Bread Pudding. ‘Ohana Bread Pudding at Tambu Lounge Big thumbs up to Chiquita and Disney for devising a creative way to recycle all those peels! 8. Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Village Resort is an oasis of creative drinks and tiki decor. Truly: grabbing a drink here is always a fun time. Skipper Natalie (with Skipper Erica providing the Photobomb) You never really know what’s going to happen around here… Antics in the Grog Grotto And our Disney pal Daniel (hi, @WanderDisney!) recently visited with Trader Sam and shared his thoughts on some of the bar’s drink options. Drinks at Trader Sam’s The Tropical Snowstorm is listed on the menu’s limited time, seasonsl insert, but Daniel notes that all the drinks on this page are available to order all year. (So long as the bar has the ingredients, you can get one!) The Tropical Snowstorm is Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, Coconut Cream, Cinnamon, and Nutmeg! Holiday Drinks This one tastes like Christmas, and if you’re anything like us, you know that’s a good thing! We love the warm spices combined with the tropical coconut flavor. Daniel says this one is smooth and easy to drink. Tropical Snowstorm Spiced Island is from the regular menu, and it consists of Knob Creek Select Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon (a Disney exclusive!), St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram, Orgeat (almond), and Pineapple Juice. Spiced Island It’s served with a wedge of pineapple and a beautiful plumeria, so you get the island vibes right away. The spiced comes in with the St. Elizabeth’s Allspice Dram, which is very flavor forward in the drink. Spiced Island While Daniel mentioned that it’s great to see the exclusive Knob Creek being used in the cocktail, the Spiced Island is a little too sweet. If you like a whiskey sour, you’ll like the Spiced Island. Spiced Island We love checking in on Trader Sam and his Grog Grotto. It’s a Walt Disney World lounge with such a distinctive vibe that you can not replicate it anywhere else on property. Many thanks to Daniel for sharing his review! 19. Kringla Bakeri og Kafe in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion reopened after a lengthy refurbishment late last August. Kringla Bakeri og Kafe Among the returning classics to the spot were popular items like School Bread, Berry Cream Puffs, and Sweet Pretzels. As happy as we were to have those beloved snacks back, one question we asked — as did many DFB readers — was, “But where are the Troll Horns?” For those unfamiliar, Troll Horns are a slightly crunchy sugar-coated pastry horn-shaped shell filled with cloudberry jam and whipped cream. Troll Horn They are simultaneously rich in flavor with a mild sweetness (save for the sugar crystals covering the shell for an extra sweet punch) while also light and airy in texture. And they were a favorite for many DFB Readers. But I guess I can say they ARE a favorite… because it’s been announced that Troll Horns are back at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe! Now, we have confirmation for the Troll Horns. But, according to the Disney World online menu, other favorites may be back at Kringla as well. Currently we’re seeing items like the Snow Globe and the Cinnamon Loaf listed, too. We’ll be checking for you soon to confirm! Snow Globe But for now, head to Norway to grab your favorite Troll Horn (or try it for the first time, if it’s new to you) at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe! And let us know what you find there!! 20. Now, more than ever, couples are celebrating their love at Walt Disney World Resort and including their friends and family in the fun. So after Tim Tebow and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters announced their engagement Thursday, where did they want to go? Walt Disney World, of course! With friends and family along for the ride, Tebow, a professional athlete and sports analyst, and Nel-Peters took flight on Dumbo at Magic Kingdom Park and stopped in front of Cinderella Castle to meet another pair of lovebirds, Cinderella and Prince Charming. It was the first visit to Walt Disney World for Nel-Peters, a native of South Africa. “It’s special being able to celebrate here at Walt Disney World with her family and my family,” Tebow said. “Every day with her is more than I could have ever wished for.” If you’d like some magical ideas on how to tell your own love story at Walt Disney World, check out disneyweddings.com. 21. We stopped by Magic Kingdom’s Tortuga Tavern yesterday and happened upon a new addition to the menu. Tortuga Tavern This seasonally open Adventureland spot is currently serving Black Bean Chips with your choice of hummus: pineapple jalapeno, mango sriracha, or traditional. Tortuga Tavern Menu We ordered up our black bean chips with the pineapple jalapeno hummus. Black Bean Chips with Pineapple Jalapeno Hummus At $5.49 (or a Disney Dining Plan snack credit), we would’ve liked to have received a larger portion of the crunchy black bean tortilla-style chips. Black Bean Chips It would’ve been nice to have more to scoop up the pineapple jalapeno hummus, which really is tasty! The jalapeno delivered only a hint of heat, while the pineapple left the much more prominent aftertaste. Pineapple Jalapeno Hummus It will be interesting to see if the Black Bean Chips return to the menu. Remember, Tortuga Tavern is a seasonal location, and with both the holidays and the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend wrapping up, it’s not listed with operating hours in the near future after tomorrow. But because crowds are always part of the consideration when planning trips to Disney World, we do seem to find Tortuga Tavern open more often than in the past, and we’ll keep an eye out to see the menu again soon… and maybe even try some of that Mango Sriracha hummus with those chips! Learn about navigating through peak crowd times in Disney World — when you’ll likely find Tortuga Tavern open — in our DFB YouTube Video! Do you stop by Tortuga Tavern when you see it open?
