ABC is getting ready to film its holiday specials at Walt Disney World — and we’ve got information about dates and performances! Magic Kingdom Christmas Filming in 2017 WDWMagic is reporting that, like last year, no parade will be filmed at Walt Disney World. Rather, ABC will film Disneyland’s parade for its multiple holiday specials airing in November and December. ABC will film musical and stage performances a Walt Disney World, using cast members as audience extras. No tickets will be issued to guests, but performances may be visible from guest areas. Merry Christmas at the Magic Kingdom Filming will take place on November 7-11 (dates always subject to change), so if you’re in the parks, take a minute to check out the action! Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort is in the midst of BIG changes! We just took a look at some new concept art for the Resort, which will be completely reimagined by summer of 2019. One of the projects that will result from the current construction is a 15-story tower which will add 545 guest rooms and bring rooftop dining to Coronado Springs Resort! During your visits to Aulani Resort, perhaps you have noticed a small shrub with blueberries in Waikolohe Valley; we call this shrub, ʻukiʻuki. The berries of this small plant can be used to dye kapa, the barkcloth the people of old Hawaiʻi used for clothing and bedding. In fact, you can even take a class at Pau Hana community hall with Dalani Tanahy, a kapa practitioner from the Waiʻanae coast. Or maybe youʻve noticed a towering tree with roots jutting out into the air; that's hala, or pandanus. The long leaves are picked when dry and used for weaving into mats, jewelry, and hats. It is also said that these leaves were used to make sails for great voyaging canoes. The next time you visit Pau Hana community hall, you may meet Aunty Lorna Pacheco, a hala practitioner, who will share with you her unique craft. World of Disney stores at Downtown Disney District in California and Disney Springs in Florida are being transformed into distinctly Disney retail environments that are contemporary, immersive and fun places to shop. In addition to improved store layouts, these flagship locations embrace new design elements that draw upon Disney’s rich history of storytelling. The reimagined stores are designed to inspire guests with an unmatched selection of new products and will help them discover treasured souvenirs that quickly become tangible memories of their Disney vacations. For an opening this big, the Disney Parks Merchandise team has curated a stellar line up of products. A new vintage-inspired collection features the one and only Mickey Mouse from 1950s television series, “The Mickey Mouse Club.” “We’ve taken a beloved part of Disney history that Guests have enjoyed watching since 1955 and designed fashionable and fun apparel for today’s family,” said Laura Caszatt, Merchandise Manager with Disney Parks Merchandise. The classic-yet-modern collection offers something for everyone, from eye-catching apparel to Mouse-themed accessories. T-shirts and varsity jackets are emblazoned with the “leader of the club.” Hats, headbands and handbags will make outfits as welcome as can be, especially for those in party-prep mode for the upcoming 90th celebration of Mickey Mouse next month. November also marks the return of the holidays at Disney Parks, where guests can celebrate with captivating décor, delicious treats, and, of course, merchandise. The World of Disney stores in California and Florida will be the first shops this year to offer the Disney Parks Holiday collection. Familiar favorites such as playful headwear, accessories and even “ugly” sweaters will join new products that place guests right into the spirit while visiting Disney Parks. At any given moment anywhere in the world, someone is hard at work saving a species. These efforts can take many forms, such as field research on oyster reefs along the Florida coast, habitat protection for penguins in Argentina, community education programs benefitting gorillas in Africa, preservation efforts for Hawaiian Monk Seals, working with schools and communities to teach bee conservation and much, much more. For more than 20 years, the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) has been committed to saving wildlife, inspiring action and protecting our planet through philanthropic support of nonprofit organizations that work alongside communities to conserve our natural resources and wildlife. This month, the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) awarded more than $5 million in grants to support 76 organizations working to protect the magic of nature around the world, including$782,000 to seven Florida-based organizations for academic research, wildlife conservation and habitat restoration. The fund also recognized 13 people across the globe with the Disney Conservation Hero award for their tireless efforts to save wildlife and inspire communities to take part in conservation efforts. Among this year’s grant recipients is the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), which is working to save critically endangered Sumatran rhinos from extinction in Indonesia. Today, there are fewer than 80 Sumatran rhinos left in the wild. IRF is addressing threats to this species, working with communities to ensure these rhinos and their habitats are protected. One of IRF’s employees, Sumadi Hasmaran, has been recognized as a Disney Conservation Hero for his leadership in the establishment and management of the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) – a 250-acre breeding and research facility. Sumadi oversaw construction of the SRS and engaged people living nearby through employment and other livelihood opportunities. His dedication to the sanctuary resulted in the birth of the first two Sumatran rhino calves in a managed setting in Asia in more than 140 years, an important achievement for a species on the brink of extinction. These efforts for rhinos are part of a larger conservation commitment that has helped protect more than 400 species through projects spanning half the countries around the world. While the majority of funding for DCF is provided by The Walt Disney Company, it is supplemented by the generous contributions of guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom and other select Walt Disney World Resort locations, sailing with Disney Cruise Line or staying at select Disney Vacation Club resorts. There are some big changes coming to Epcot. For instance, we just checked in on the Ratatouille ride and Skyliner Station construction in the park. But another highly anticipated addition is the Guardians of the Galaxy Ride. Guardians of the Galaxy attraction Concept Art ©Disney This new ride is replacing the former Universe of Energy attraction, and work is well underway transforming the existing building into the queue area while they add a new building to house the ride. We’ve been monitoring the progress of the transformation of the Universe of Energy building — especially since it’s conveniently located on the way to the Food and Wine Festival Center . They have removed all the solar panels, and you can see through the Universe of Energy building as they transform this space. Universe of Energy/Guardians of the Galaxy Construction For perspective, this is what the building looked like two weeks ago! There is a lot deconstruction before the actual construction! Guardians of the Galaxy Ride The building that will house the ride itself is going up to the right of the Universe of Energy building. Guardians of the Galaxy Ride This is really going to dominate the skyline in this area — and from World Showcase. Here’s a picture we shared a few weeks ago taken from the Japan Pavilion where you can clearly see the Guardians of Galaxy ride building in the skyline. (Another interesting vantage point is offered if you arrive to Epcot via the Monorail from the Ticket & Transportation Center.) Down in Orlando, the trees are still green and the summer heat is still lingering, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fall season at Walt Disney World Resort! If you’ve recently visited Epcot’s France Pavilion, or entered the park via the International Gateway located between the UK and France Pavilions, then you’ve likely noticed a lot of construction going on! That construction is for the addition of a Ratatouille ride in France as well as the Skyliner transportation system. We’ll start this update with the Ratatouille ride. Ratatouille ride in Epcot’s France concept art ©Disney This ride will be in a completely new section of the France pavilion. Looking at the concept art, it appears that the ride building will be disguised as city buildings behind the current entrance to the Impressions de France film. Here’s how the construction progress looks this week from the International Gateway, with the ride building in the center of the photo. Ratatouille Ride Construction The ride building is rising up behind the existing buildings. This ride, along with the Skyliner, have necessitated the removal of a fair bit of landscaping as the construction is underway. Ratatouille Ride Construction If you’ve been lucky enough to go to Disneyland Paris, then you will be familiar with the Ratatouille ride, as Epcot’s version will be similar to the Ratatouille ride in Disneyland Paris. You will get the sense that you will “shrink to Remy’s size and scurry to safety in a dazzling chase across a kitchen with the sights, sounds and smells of Gusteau’s legendary Parisian restaurant,” according to Disney. Like the Guardians of the Galaxy ride, we only know this will open in time for Disney World’s 50th Anniversary in 2021. An exact opening date has not been announced (though current rumors indicate an earlier opening than 2021). Disney Skyliner System Epcot’s International Gateway will host the park’s Skyliner Station. The new Skyliner system will connect Epcot and Hollywood Studios as well as Caribbean Beach, Riviera, Pop Century, and Art of Animation Resorts. There’s always something going on in Epcot — we’ve updated you on the Guardians of the Galaxy Ride and Ratatouille Ride installation as well as Epcot’s Skyliner Station. Today, we’ve got some construction and refurbishment updates from all over the park! Kringla Bakeri og Kafe and Puffin’s Roost We’ve been keeping you updated on the construction walls that were surrounding the Puffin’s Roost Store attached to the recently re-opened Kringla Bakeri og Kafe in the Norway Pavilion. Well, now those walls are down! We spotted the Puffin (yep, still there!), but the Puffin’s Roost sign and doors have been removed. Puffin’s Roost This is what it used to look like with the signs and doors for the gift shop. Puffin’s Roost main entrance Over in Germany, the Bier Cart was recently refurbished. HUZZAH! Now it’s sporting a new awning with “Bier und Brezeln” printed on it. We don’t even need a translator to tell us that this means Beer and Pretzels (as big as your head)! Germany Beer and Pretzel Cart In Japan, they are keeping busy with the construction of an upcoming brand new signature table-service restaurant. An opening time frame has not yet been announced, but we can’t wait to learn more. Construction on New Restaurant in Japan Pavilion Though it’s not exactly related to construction or refurbishment… we are disappointed to still see that the German Train Village has not added their miniature version of a Food and Wine Festival like they usually do for the Festival. We’re hoping this doesn’t mean it won’t be decorated for Epcot’s International Festival of the Holidays, either. Did you know that the Haunted Mansion’s cemetery queue contains hidden references characters who were created for the attraction, but cut before the final version? That’s the topic our Imagineers look into in today’s celebration of the Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park. One such character guests can spot as they travel through the queue is a mysterious one-eyed cat, who was intended to appear in the attraction and would’ve been a figure the Ghost Host would warn you about as you traveled through the mansion. Another is Sea Captain Culpepper Clyne, whose tomb you can find inside the cemetery, is a nod to an affect and a character originally created for the attraction by Disney Legends Rolly Crump and Yale Gracey years ago. In that version of the attraction, guests would encounter a sea captain just before a spooky ghost would materialize nearby. Both the one-eyed cat and Sea Captain Culpepper Clyne were cut before the final version of the attraction took shape. Luis Fonsi is not your typical papa, and he proved it when he visited Walt Disney World Resort last week with his family. The Puerto Rican singer and songwriter, best known for his worldwide hit song “Despacito,” celebrated Halloween Disney style by dressing up as Captain Hook during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Park. Luis’ wife Agueda dressed up as Wendy, daughter Mikaela as Tinker Bell and his son Rocco was Peter Pan! Aren’t they adorable? Before the party started, they met Tinker Bell. They then changed into their costumes to meet the inspiration for Luis’ costume, Captain Hook! Followed by plenty of trick-or-treating at Not-So-Scary! Let’s take a look at Luis’ visit! Having been a Disney fan long before I was a cast member, visiting with a Disney filmmaker makes me feel like I’m walking among giants. Doing so with a filmmaker I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing for nearly two decades makes me feel like I’m catching up with an old friend. That was the case during a recent visit to Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California, where I sat down with “Ralph Breaks the Internet” producer Clark Spencer, an Oscar® winner I first met during the production of “Lilo & Stich” at the former Disney Feature Animation Florida studio at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In the years since, my interviews with Clark have chronicled his work on such films as “Bolt,” “Winnie the Pooh,” “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Zootopia” – each time deepening my appreciation for this fascinating filmmaker. Our latest visit was our first to take place on camera, allowing me to share his insights like never before. We discussed everything from his unconventional career path to the creative challenges his team tackled in moving Ralph and Vanellope out of Litwak’s video arcade and into the uncharted world of the Internet. In this first clip, Clark recalls his years of filmmaking in Florida and explains how lunch breaks in a Walt Disney World Theme Park underscored the purpose of the studio’s work. You’ll find women’s and girls’ dresses themed to all kinds of attractions and rides. Plus, they sneaked that Loungefly Orange Bird bag in there this week! The Joffrey’s Revive Stand in Tomorrowland has increased the price of their pastries to $4.99, up from $4.19. Joffrey’s in Tomorrowland Ride and Attraction Spirit Jerseys Spotted Both Disney World and Disneyland are getting Spirit Jerseys for popular rides and attractions (one even glows in the dark!). We spotted the first of these to show up in the Magic Kingdom — the Pirates of the Caribbean one!
