Around this time last year, we had the joy of sharing the news about Augustus, the Nile hippopotamus born in January at Disney’s Animal Kingdom – the first hippo to be born at the park in more than a decade. Knowing how much Disney Parks Blog readers love hearing about Augustus, I’m happy to share he has had a phenomenal first year marked with much, much, much growth – all great for a young hippo. To celebrate Augustus’ 1st birthday, our keepers made a sweet popsicle cake featuring some of his favorite treats as enrichment for him and his hippo family to share. One of the things I like best about my role is getting to spend time with the keepers who work with our animals on a daily basis. Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Lindsay Wick, Augustus’ primary keeper and who has been with him since birth, to learn more about her and Augustus. Q. How long have you worked at Disney’s Animal Kingdom? A. I started working at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as part of the nutrition team in 2016. In 2017, I transitioned to the animal care team where I help take care of many of the animals on the safari, including the black rhino, bongo, okapi and hippopotamus. Q. What do you like best about your current position? A. Right now I am Augustus’ primary keeper, and I have loved working with him since he was born. I have enjoyed watching him develop over the past year and see that he has become braver and braver each day. Q: How much has Augustus grown over the last year? A: Augustus has had a momentous first year in which he has grown from about 80 pounds to more than 800 pounds – that is 10 times his birth weight! He is right on track for a young hippo who could grow up to 3,000 pounds. Augustus in Jan. 2019 Augustus with his mom in Jan. 2018 Q: What are some of the development milestones Augustus has learned in his first year? A: Known for his adventurous spirit, Augustus is thriving. He is very independent, smart and willing to learn. He is currently learning how to make quiet “wheeze honks,” which are a hippo’s way of vocalizing. Q. Are there any similarities between Augustus and his mom? A: Yes. If you look closely at Augustus’ and Tuma’s front feet, they each have a pink birth mark. Q. How do animals learn to participate in their own health care? A. We have used positive reinforcement to help Augustus learn many new behaviors. Some of these include steady (or hold still), head down, back up, lay down. These behaviors are taught to help prepare Augustus for future health care “check-ups.” Q. Why did you choose a popsicle cake to celebrate? A. The popsicle cake was used as enrichment to get the animals curious about something new in their environment to check out and play differently than usual. Some other items used for enrichment could be oversized pool toys, ice, and different textures and tastes. Q. Can Guests see Augustus at Disney’s Animal Kingdom? A. Yes. Guests continue to enjoy watching Augustus play and explore his habitat on the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction where he can often be found splashing around in the river with his mom Tuma and the rest of his hippo family. Q. Are hippos endangered? A. The Nile hippopotamus is a vulnerable species with a declining population. What is important about Augustus’ birth is that his parents were chosen to breed through the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. His birth was a huge success for our team of keepers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and an important contribution to the worldwide conservation and understanding of these amazing creatures. Our stroll around the world today had us sipping on a brand new spiked slush — a Troll Kreme. With a name like that you can guess we spotted this picture-perfect slush in Epcot’s Norway pavilion! Troll Kreme in Epcot’s Norway You know, a drink is always a lot more fun when it is topped with whipped cream…but was this Troll Kreme a delight or not? A Troll Kreme is at its heart a Cranberry and Vanilla slush, and then it’s topped with Bacardi Dragon Berry Rum and whipped cream. Troll Kreme in Epcot’s Norway You can enjoy this in a fun (plastic) souvenir cup for extra $$$, which we indulged in on this trip. Troll Kreme in Epcot’s Norway This is delicious! The sweet of the vanilla and whipped cream are a good balance to the tartness of the cranberry and dragon berry flavors. If you enjoy your sweet and tart flavors (think Key Lime Pie), then you’ll probably enjoy this. Troll Kreme in Epcot’s Norway The next time you’re looking for an adult slush give this one a try! We can imagine this being really satisfying on a typically warm or humid Florida day. Don’t forget, another troll-themed sweet treat is back in Kringla Bakeri og Kafe — the Troll Horns! If you love professional football and can’t wait for the 2019 Pro Bowl, mark your calendar for Saturday, January 26, 2019! On that date, Disney Springs will host the 2019 Pro Bowl Pep Rally at the Marketplace Stage with a lively mix of fun that includes NFL Team Mascots and Cheerleaders, NFL and Disney Trivia, a DJ Dance Party and more. With shows taking place at 4:00 pm., 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., you’ll have plenty of chances to celebrate the sport and maybe even score a photo or autograph. While all the mascots will add to the festivities, I’m especially excited to see “Pat Patriot” representing the New England Patriots. (Both of my parents grew up in Massachusetts and all of my cousins are die-hard fans!) In addition to the Pep Rally, keep an eye out for the NFL Shop, a pop-up location featuring a wide array of offerings including team jerseys and T-shirts, lanyards, keychains, mini helmets and footballs and tumblers. You’ll also be able to purchase tickets to the 2019 Pro Bowl, taking place on Sunday, January 27 at Camping World Stadium in nearby downtown Orlando. New this year, your game tickets also get you access to the Player Red Carpet, KidZone, fireworks, and more. There is no charge to enjoy the NFL Pro Bowl Pep Rally and self-parking is complimentary. Want more? Keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog for updates about what’s planned for 2019 Pro Bowl Week at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and be sure to check out this recent story with details on which stars will be participating in the event. The Walt Disney World Resort Hotels will start implementing a new credit card policy starting February 27 for guests who wish to put a credit card on file during their stay. New credit card policy coming to Disney World Hotels Under the new policy the hotels will place “incremental authorization holds on the card for estimated incidental expenses, in addition to any balance due on the reservation.” According to Disney Destinations, the authorization hold on the card will be for any balance due on the reservation plus $100 for estimated incidental expenses. If guest spending exceeds the initial $100 hold, additional incremental holds will be placed automatically. The authorization holds will not exceed the current balance plus $100. Touch to Pay at a Counter Service Location Disney World Resort Hotel guests do have the option of not having a credit card on file, but they will be unable to charge to their room or MagicBand. Guests will be advised of this change in policy – which Disney says “better aligns with hotel industry practices” – during online check-in through My Disney Experience or at the front desk of their Walt Disney World Resort Hotel. Guests who have already completed their online check-in will receive a letter this month about this change. Want to stay on top of all the Disney news?
