The time has arrived for the Third Annual Disney Parks Moms Panel Awards. Each year we look forward to awarding some of our panelists’ favorite snacks, attractions, hotels and events, and this year is no different! The votes have been compiled from more than 170 current and former panelists, and we can’t wait to share the winners for all things Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort and Disney Cruise Line. First up this year is Walt Disney World Resort! We know everyone has their favorites, but here are a few of our panelists’ top picks: Category: Favorite Snack For the third year in a row, the winner is the Dole Whip. As in previous years, the Dole Whip was a clear front runner. Others receiving nods were Mickey Premium Bars, popcorn and churros. Category: Favorite Walt Disney World Resort Hotel Every resort hotel on property received at least one vote, but in the end, the undisputed winner was Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort! Honorable mentions go to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Category: Favorite Seasonal Event This year we have a NEW winner and it goes to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Apparently, our panelists love cookies and hot chocolate in the park, and snow on Main Street, U.S.A. is a definite bonus. However, our previous winner, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party was an extremely close second! Honorable mentions go to Epcot® International Food & Wine Festival and Epcot® International Flower & Garden Festival. Category: Favorite Disney Springs Activity For the second year in row, dining has claimed victory as our panelists’ favorite thing to do at Disney Springs. However, shopping was second by only a few votes. And honestly, who doesn’t love a great afternoon filled with these two activities? We highly recommend you check out both at Disney Springs. BREAKING NEWS! Captain Marvel has hit movie screens and now you can find her at the Disneyland Resort! Captain Marvel has her very own Meet and Greet Experience at Disney California Adventure Park. And we have the scoop! Captain Marvel Meet and Greet Fans can come face to face with the woman herself, Captain Marvel! Until Marvel Land opens in California Adventure in 2020 you can head to Hollywood Land and you never know what superhero you may run into! Captain Marvel Meet and Greet Construction They are still putting the finishing touches on it but soon you will find Captain Marvel at Hangar 12 in Hollywood Land. This will probably open on Tuesday, and you can catch Captain Marvel there from 9:25 AM to 3:00 PM. But in the meantime……you can find her right now at another location in Hollywood Land! Kona Cafe at Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Village Resort has always been a guest favorite spot to grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner. But with a big menu change, is it still as crave-worthy? Learn About: Kona Cafe Polynesian Resort Disney World Restaurants Located in the Great Ceremonial House that serves as the centerpiece of the resort, the restaurant is airy and open…but still relatively boring when it comes to decor and theme. But since the Polynesian is on the Monorail, Kona Cafe is relatively easy to access even if you’re not staying at the resort. And, of course, the food has been fairly consistent over the years: good with moments of greatness. Now the recent menu change has guests wondering whether Kona Cafe should stay on their must-get Advance Dining Reservation list or whether they should head elsewhere. We reviewed lunch shortly after the menu change, and overall, we were impressed by the offerings! In particular, we thought the sushi was a terrific value, and we enjoyed the Hawaiian-Style Reuben sandwich. Even dessert had some pleasant surprises with Key Lime and Tiramisu cups bringing good flavor. See our full review of lunch at Kona Cafe here! Kona Cafe But I wanted to get back to dine from the Dinner Offerings portion of the menu, which is where you’ll find Steak and Seafood that isn’t available for lunch. The All Day Offerings include the items we reviewed previously and some other items I wanted to try. Kona Cafe All-Day and Dinner Offerings But first: Lapu Lapu. This refreshing tropical cocktail is a staple of the Polynesian. Diners and visitors to the resort can also order a Lapu Lapu at ‘Ohana and Tambu Lounge. It’s easy to spot this iconic Polynesian Village Resort drink because #pineapple. (FYI: If you order this on the Disney Dining Plan, you’ll receive it in a glass — no pineapple!) Lapu Lapu The meal begins with soft dinner rolls and macadamia nut butter. This butter is a popular addition to the breakfast menu at Kona, where it’s served with the Macadamia Nut Pancakes (see our review of the pancakes here!). At dinner, it’s a unique addition to the warm rolls. Dinner Rolls with Butter For this visit, I went with two All Day Offerings, one Dinner Offering and a side. The menu is fairly eclectic here, with some dishes having subtle touches of island flavor and others being very island-forward. Sampling the Kona Dinner Menu The Duck Fried Rice with Confit Leg is one such island-forward dish. Fried rice is dotted with peppers, onion, shitake mushrooms, small bits of duck, and egg. A fried spring roll on top also contains duck. Bok choy provides a bit of color. Overall, the fried rice was sweeter than expected, and delicious. The star of the dish, though, is the confit duck leg, which is succulent and savory. The sweet togarashi is the dominant spice here, so if you’re familiar with and enjoy the ubiquitous Japanese spice, you’ll enjoy this dish. Fans of duck will also appreciate its use here. Duck-Fried Rice with Leg Confit The Big Kahuna Burger is little messy but flavorful. It’s a burger (more on this in a moment!) topped with sauteed pastrami, corned beef, pepper jack cheese, mustard aioli, and tangy cucumber. Big Kahuna Burger The toppings are generous, and the pastrami and corned beef bring lots of flavor. Subtle heat from the pepper jack is a nice addition as well. The aioli adds some much-needed moisture. Big Kahuna Burger The burger, though, was probably the least exciting thing we ordered overall. The flavors were fine, but the patty was a bit overdone and there were definitely more enticing things on the menu. That said, if you’re in a burger mood, this and the Crispy Cheese Burger we discussed in our lunch review are decent options (click here for that lunch review!). Big Kahuna Burger The big ticket items at Kona Cafe are found on the Dinner Offerings where the 20-oz. Bone-In Black Angus Ribeye comes in at $55! (If you’re on the Disney Dining Plan, this is a big value for you… except you’ll likely need to order a side.) The ribeye is a beautiful cut of meat, and the grill marks and visible seasoning are really compelling. Arugula and a braised cipollini onion are the only accompaniments, and they’re definitely more garnish than side dish. 20oz. Bone-In Black Angus Ribeye The meat was cooked perfectly (I ordered it medium-rare), and it carried great flavor from the grill and seasonings. I was honestly impressed. 20oz. Bone-In Black Angus Ribeye If a big slab of meat is all you need for a meal, you might not be too concerned about a side; but like a lot of steakhouses, Kona Cafe offers a number of sides that pair well with the steak. Roasted Heirloom Carrots are an intriguing option, as is the Lobster and Crab Mac and Cheese (already a guest favorite), but I went with a true classic: Creamy Mashed Potatoes. These were very good — creamy as per the description and a generous portion definitely share-able. The flavor was spot-on! Mashed Potatoes Side I was also stoked to try a couple of options from Sauces! You know I love a good sauce, and these were delicious! Togarashi Hollandaise is a bright fusion of two powerful flavors, and the Horseradish Cream Sauce was potent enough to really hold its own. (A little of this added to the Big Kahuna might’ve helped things along, too…) Togarashi Hollandaise and Horseradish Cream Sauce Desserts here also had a makeover recently, and we tried them during our lunch visit when the new menu first came out in January. The five options — all served in small glasses — include Tiramisu, S’mores, Tapioca Pudding, Bananas Foster, and Key Lime. Presented Dessert Tray Each dessert is $5.00, and the ones we tried were all delicious, with Key Lime slightly nudging out Tiramisu as our favorite. Tapioca Pudding was great, too! Kona Cafe Desserts Kona Cafe is still a good option for table service — particularly if you’re unable to find a table service ADR to your liking in Magic Kingdom and want something nearby. The Monorail ride over to the Polynesian is a nice escape from the park, and the decent menu offerings at Kona are a tasty way to fuel up for a night of fireworks and fun. That said, it currently seems to me that Kona Cafe is being presented as a “stand-in” for an absent signature dining experience in the deluxe level and every expensive Polynesian Village Resort. The steakhouse additions to the menu and high-end ($$$) options are clearly a move to show guests that they don’t have to go to Citricos, Narcoossee’s, or California Grill to get signature-level dining when they’re staying here. But the atmosphere here is still that of a moderate-level dining location, so I think they have a way to go to convince high-paying guests that this is the date night they deserve. However, in the meantime, those who are dining on the standard Disney Dining Plan are going to be able to get some expensive options for their one-credit payment here…so make hay while the sun shines. Mickey’s 90th birthday celebrations continue in the Magic Kingdom with Mickey and Minnie’s Surprise Celebration. We spotted the return of the festive looking Mickey Confetti Pretzel on our visit to the park this week as well as new menu items, new merchandise, and construction updates. Mickey Confetti Pretzel Before you even enter the park you’ll find some ongoing construction at the park entrance area. What’s New at the Magic Kingdom’s Entrance We were able to get more pictures of the construction in progress outside the park at the entrance area. You can get good views into the site from the monorail. Magic Kingdom Entrance Construction Magic Kingdom Entrance Construction No official announcements have been made about the construction. There was a LOT of activity on the official Disneyland and Walt Disney World websites yesterday with the announcement of opening dates for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on both coasts came the debut of updated and new pages for the various attractions, restaurants, and experiences for Galaxy’s Edge. Now, if you looked at the title of this post, you may be thinking, “Got it. But what does that have to do with the 2019 Epcot Food and Wine Festival?” Epcot Food and Wine Festival Well, in checking out the new restaurant pages for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on the Disney World restaurants page, we couldn’t help but notice that four Food and Wine Festival entries had also been updated. Disney World website screenshot These four Special Events — the Mediterranean Food and Wine Pairing, French Family Meal Traditions, the Italian Regional Food & Wine Pairing Luncheon, and the Parisian Breakfast — have all remained listed on the Disney World website as 2018 events well after the 2018 Festival was over. Parisian Breakfast So, we can’t confirm that these events are indeed returning for 2019, but the fact that Disney has not only left them up on the page, but also updated the dates makes us hopeful that these popular guest favorites will return for this year’s festival. A variety of new experiences – from art classes and fishing excursions, to pirate experiences and mermaid schools and more – are already, or will soon be, available to book at Walt Disney World Resort hotels. Here’s a look at each new guest offering: Captain Hook’s Pirate Crew at Disney’s Beach Club Resort Ahoy, mateys! Reservations are now open for a new group experience that invites young recruits ages 4-12 into the world of pirate feasting and treasure seeking, high-energy sailin’ and swashbucklin’ fun. The new Captain Hook’s Pirate Crew at Disney’s Beach Club Resort teaches youngsters pirate ways, and lets them follow clues that will lead to hidden treasure and being named to Captain Hook’s Pirate Crew. Armed with clues, young buccaneers will comb through the resort and set sail on a pontoon boat around Crescent Lake, in the latest seafaring adventure at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. Once the treasure is unearthed, all join in a Pirate feast that includes selections such as Cannon Meatballs with marinara or macaroni and “gold” sauce for entrees, along with a treasure chest treat or fruit for dessert. Mermaid School Guests can become part of Ariel’s world at the Mermaid School at select Walt Disney World resort hotels. When you’re in Animal Kingdom, you can keep your eyes peeled for Kevin from Up! in a few ways! She landed on Discovery Island a few weeks ago… (Have you seen her?) Kevin from UP is now in Animal Kingdom! And now she’s been spotted on the Kevin Cupcake! At Warung Outpost in the Asia section of the park, we found this new treat alongside a new cocktail: the Himalayan Explorer. Both are equally eye-catching in color! Himalayan Explorer and Kevin Cupcake The Kevin Cupcake features yellow cake with baked-in sprinkles, and is also filled with strawberry mousse. Kevin Cupcake It’s topped with a “sky” of blue-colored buttercream, crispy white chocolate pearls to mimic the famous Up! balloons, and fondant accents. An edible chocolate picture of Kevin finishes off the treat. Kevin Cupcake Parents will probably want to grab plenty of napkins, because — as you can likely anticipate — the vivid hues of this colorful cupcake transfer easily to the hands of the kiddos! Kevin Cupcake Plus, the classic flavors of vanilla with a hint of strawberry tucked inside have lots of taste appeal for the little ones, too. (And for us big kids, while we’re at it!) Kevin Cupcake But there is also a new treat at Warung Outpost that’s just for the adults: it’s the Himalayan Explorer cocktail. Himalayan Explorer This sip takes the Outpost’s regular Strawberry and Mango Margaritas and pours them in layers. The finishing touch is more than a splash of Blue Curacao. Himalayan Explorer You can see that it’s not just kids getting in on the colorful fun! But while it’s really cool to look at, the Blue Curacao gives this drink its intense and somewhat syrupy-sweet flavor profile. Himalayan Explorer You really have to enjoy the taste of it to enjoy this beverage. Himalayan Explorer So, for my tastes, I’d stick with a straight-up margarita or the Triple Yeti Blast. In any case, if you’re in need of refreshment in Animal Kingdom’s Asia, be sure to stop by Warung Outpost! Though their staples have remained pretty solid over the years (which, in the case of the Triple Yeti Blast, is a very good thing), they can still surprise from time to time!
