The Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend will take place October 31 – November 3, and 2019 marks the 10th Anniversary for the runDisney event! We’re kicking off this week on the Disney Parks Blog with a new Disney Doodle from artist Ashley Taylor. In this series, our artists take turns imagining what different Disney characters would do or see first if they had the chance to visit a Disney Park. Learn About: Jaleo Downtown Disney Disney World Restaurants Newly open in Disney Springs, this is the fifth Jaleo location in the U.S. (the restaurant has its origins in Washington, D.C. where it opened in 1993). So Jaleo already comes accompanied with a well-earned reputation for showcasing the authentic Spanish cuisine of Chef Andrés through a variety of shared plates along with paellas, sangria, Spanish cheeses and wines and much more. But Chef Andrés is not only known for his cooking. Among other and numerous accolades and awards, he has been named both “Outstanding Chef” and “Humanitarian of the Year” by the James Beard Foundation and received the 2015 National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Chef Andrés was also nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for disaster relief work through World Central Kitchen, the non-profit organization he founded in 2010. We have been looking forward to the opening of Jaleo in Disney Springs for some time now, and we are so excited to bring you along for our first visit! Jaleo Atmosphere The Disney Springs location presents the biggest Jaleo yet. Welcome to Jaleo Aside from the sheer size of the multi-level restaurant, the other striking aspect are the red, orange, and gold “citrus-inspired hues” you see decorating the space upon setting foot inside. Jaleo Jaleo Jaleo Even with the vivid color scheme, the space still feels bright and open with light colored wood tabletops and clean lines. But there are also some decorative elements that are just plain fun surrounding the mixed booth and chair seating. Jaleo Jaleo Jaleo I have read the word “vibrant” used to describe Jaleo, and it certainly applies! Jaleo Jaleo The setting manages to be both upscale and whimsical at the same time. I mean, who would NOT want to sit at the Foosball Table?! Foosball Table Other unique features include onstage kitchens. Seating by onstage kitchen Most notable is the huge wood fire paella pit for preparing the authentic paellas! Paella Pit They will prepare two paellas every night here — one vegetarian and one meat. The choices will rotate, but just a note that the restaurant has been best known for the classic Valencia Paella. We do want to note: the menu you see below is what guests will receive when the restaurant settles into its groove in about one to two weeks. (For opening night, the menu was somewhat abbreviated.) Even for the kids… Kids’ Menu But, of course, we can’t forget drinks to start! Cocktail Menu Cocktail Menu The Salt Air Margarita is MiLagro Blanco tequila and Combier L’Original with lime and salt air. Salt Air Margarita The “salt air” means that it’s topped with a salty foam as opposed to a traditional salt rim. And let me tell you… it’s seriously salty! Salt Air Margarita Sipped on its own, the foam is too intense, but the drink comes together well when it’s sipped together with the margarita. Wine Menu cover “Choose Your Wine Style” The lovely Cuvee Jose sparkling wine is only available at Jaleo in Disney Springs! Cuvee Jose Sparkling Wine It’s a dry wine, and really enjoyable. Moving onto the food, each item comes out as it is ready. We’re starting here with the Jamon Iberico de Bellota Cortado a Mano which presents a serving of 36 to 48-month cured ham from the free range ibcerco pigs of Spain. It is hand-carved and served tableside by a server who took classes in carving the meat and plating the dish. Jamon Iberico Served with small pieces of crunchy bread, this is simply delectable. It’s not overly salty and the fats melts away, unlike a prosciutto. Jamon Iberico It’s recommended, by the way, that you pair it with cheeses. And when have you ever known the DFB to go without a cheese plate? For the Quesos, you can choose a selection of three or five cheeses. Three Cheeses Our choice of three included Payoyo (a creamy goat’s milk cheese) with Marcona almonds, Machengo with apples, and Queso Massimo (an Asturian raw cow’s milk cheese “made exclusively for Chef José Andrés and Jaleo”). Three Cheeses The Queso Massimo, in particular, is super soft and creamy, and was the favorite at our table. The Manchego offers a nice nutty taste that pairs well with the apples. The Payoyo was the strongest of the three, yet not overwhelming. Pan de Cristal con Tomate takes the Spanish crispy bread and brushes it with fresh tomato. Pan de Cristal con Tomate It presents so much flavor for something so simple! You can also mix and match and top with the ham or your cheeses. The Aceitunas Modernas y Clasicas presents ‘Ferran Adria” liquid olives and gordal olives from Spain stuffed with piquillo pepper and anchovy. Our server recommended it as an especially interesting option. Aceitunas Modernas y Clasicas The olives are prepared with “molecular gastronomy” and you’re advised to pop the whole olive in your mouth, then press it against the roof of your mouth and it will explode! Fans of olives really should put this on their must-try list. The Croquetas de Pollo are traditional chicken fritters. But the presentation is anything but traditional! Croquetas de Pollo Chef Andres had a special plate made to resemble the pillow which held Cinderella’s glass slipper. Even better, the chicken fritters themselves were one of the best things we ate all night. Croquetas de Pollo The light crust (almost like a hush puppy) surrounds a flavorful center featuring shredded chicken and a creamy béchamel sauce that is cooked for TWO days! The recipe comes by way of the Chef’s mother. You might hear something unexpected in Jaleo… a cowbell rings when a Paella is ready! (“More cowbell!”) Paella Valencia Ours was the classic Valencia Paella: chicken, rabbit, lima and green beans and the seasonal veggie of artichoke. And it’s fabulous. The rabbit is gamey in that it’s chewier than the chicken, but still not tough. And the entire dish is bursting with flavor from the terrific seasonings, too, with lots of rosemary and saffron. The Gambas al Ajillo is the “very, very famous tapa” of plump shrimp sautéed with garlic. Gambas al Ajillo It’s served with Flauta bread to dip into the garlic olive oil sauce. Flauta And last — but not least — of our tapas are the highly recommended traditional bacon-wrapped dates, Datiles cob Tocino. Datiles cob Tocino The bacon comes through nice and strong against the sweet dates. Datiles cob Tocino Ok, when I said “last,” you didn’t think we’d forget dessert, did you? We went with two recommendations: the Flan and the Olive Oil Ice Cream. Dessert Menu The Flan is the classic Spanish custard with “espuma” of Cantain cream and oranges. It’s the recipe of Chef Andres’ grandmother. Flan The whipped cream has hints of cinnamon and citrus, and the flan is so creamy, yet not super heavy after a big dinner. Flan The Citrocos con helado de scite de oliva is Olive Oil Ice Cream with grapefruit. You definitely need to enjoy grapefruit because the dessert has chilled grapefruit chunks and even grapefruit candy. Olive Oil Ice Cream with grapefruit The olive oil is both in the ice cream and drizzled on top. It’s not something I typically would have ordered, but it’s very unique and quite good! Olive Oil Ice Cream with grapefruit And with that we’ve enjoyed our first, but not last, evening at Jaleo! Overall Our first visit to Jaleo was — quite simply — a wonderful experience. We enjoyed great service in a beautiful setting. And due to the huge variety in the tapas-style dining, and Jaleo’s menu in particular, there’s something sure to satisfy just about every guest from the pickiest to the most adventurous eaters. Better yet, it’s delicious, with every item we tried packed with flavor. Jaleo, as it turns out, was very much worth the wait, and we’re glad it’s in Disney Springs at last! Some logistics: in its opening phase, Jaleo is open for dinner beginning at 5:00 PM. However, later this month lunch service will start daily as well. Guests participating on the Disney Dining Plan will want to know that Jaleo is a signature location requiring two table service credits. Reservations were not available for this evening, but interested guests may soon call for reservations at (321) 348-3211 or visit OpenTable.com, and reservations will also soon be available through the Disney World website or by calling (407) WDW-DINE. BIG changes are coming to Epcot’s France Pavilion! We’ve been following along with the construction of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, the highly anticipated attraction coming to the Pavilion. We are also looking forward to the Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along experience joining the scene as well. And today brings news of a new restaurant being added to France, to boot: an authentic crêperie! Creperie Concept Art ©Disney The crêperie will be built in a new location next to Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. It will showcase the cuisine of celebrity chef Jérôme Bocuse of Chefs de France and Monsieur Paul. The menu will be inspired by the Brittany region of France and will present table service dining along with a quick service location serving up both savory (“galettes”) and sweet crepes. While an opening season hasn’t been announced, Disney shared that all of the new experiences including the restaurant “are coming to the pavilion in time for the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort.” Au revoir! We were in the Spring Break mood so we headed to Key West…Disney’s Old Key West Resort that is! After our tropical escape we headed to Saratoga Springs Resort. On our “travels” we found new menus, merchandise, cupcakes, and wine and mixology seminars! Hello from Saratoga Springs Our visit to Old Key West’s Gurgling Suitcase was full of new menu items! What’s New at Old Key West Resort Gurgling Suitcase has debuted a few new menu additions over the last few months. The new items on this visit included Buffalo Boneless Chicken Bites, Barbecued Pulled Pork Nachos, and Deep-fried Pickle Chips — of course we had to try them all! From its distant view of the Eiffel Tower to a waterfront reminiscent of the banks of the Seine, the France Pavilion at Epcot has long possessed a certain je ne sais quoi, inviting guests to linger in a setting inspired by the sidewalks of Paris. And soon, that invitation will be extended in a gastronomic experience as French as Renoir and Monet: the crêpe. Scheduled to be built in an all-new location near the previously announced Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure attraction, the new crêperie will feature the cuisine of celebrity chef Jérôme Bocuse, the mastermind behind the pavilion’s Chefs de France brasserie and its celebration of gourmet cuisine, Monsieur Paul. With a menu inspired by the Brittany region of France, the new location will offer table service dining as well as a quick-service stop for guests craving savory crepes called galettes and sweet crepes. Imagineers overseeing construction near the entrance of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in the expanded France pavilion.The restaurant is part of the multi-year transformation of Epcot and an enrichment of the France pavilion that includes—in addition to the classic “Impressions de France”—a “Beauty and the Beast” Sing-Along experience and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure attraction, in which guests will virtually shrink to the size of French cuisine’s most famous rat and scurry to safety across the kitchen of Gusteau’s legendary Parisian restaurant. All are coming to the pavilion in time for the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort. Elsewhere in the park, new and enhanced films are underway, and construction continues on the new “Guardians of the Galaxy”-themed attraction and a first-of-its-kind area devoted to playful fun that’ll come to life under the dome of the pavilion previously known as Wonders of Life. Look for more news soon on the transformation of Epcot, including the crêperie’s name and opening season. Pepe is now open on the West Side of Disney Springs! Learn About: Pepe by Jose Andres Downtown Disney Disney World Restaurants Pepe is the new counter service component of Jaleo by Chef José Andrés (which will open for its dinner debut this evening). This location in Disney Springs is the first brick-and-mortar location for Pepe, following the Pepe food truck which has been a hit for the last six years in Washington, D.C. You’ll find Pepe on the front corner adjacent to the main entrance for Jaleo. So, if you’re hoping to catch some of the authentic Spanish cuisine by Chef Andres, but don’t have plans to dine inside Jaleo, we’re going to check out what Pepe has in store for you! Pepe Atmosphere Pepe — just like Jaleo — was designed by Spanish designer Juli Capella. Pepe Upon walking in, a counter stands with the menu posted above. (We’ll take a closer look at the offerings on the menu in the next section of the post.) Pepe counter And, of course, friendly staff are there to greet you! Pepe Staff The most striking visual in the immediate area is a mural by Marc Jesús, a famous Menorcan painter known for “his ever-happy, blue-skinned female characters.” Mural And there is space inside the bright and colorful Jaleo dedicated to seating for guests at Pepe! Indoor seating area Indoor seating area Simple chairs and tables set the scene underneath gorgeous and striking red lantern-style chandeliers. Indoor seating area Indoor seating area The spot is strategically placed by the Matador Bar, since that’s where Pepe guests pick up their beverages. Matador Bar By the way, even though this part isn’t technically about Pepe… here’s just an FYI that the bar will be open for dinner for first-come, first-served seating and guests sitting there will be able to order off of the Jaleo menu. But for now, it’s back to the PEPE menu! Eats Sandwiches, gazpacho, salads, sangria, and more are all on the menu at Pepe! Pepe Sandwich Menu Pepe Sides Menu Pepe Other Bites Menu Pepe Drink Menu Let’s see… where to begin? How about with some Sangria? Sangria Oh, my… what a way to start! This Sangria is not uber-sweet at all (which is something we’ve come to expect from other sangrias at Disney). It is very fruity, of course, but the sweetness comes through on the back end. It’s truly enjoyable. Notice the extra-large cubes in the cup which melt more slowly than crushed ice. Oh, and it’s served in a plastic cup as opposed to glass for sipping outside, if you like. Sangria And if you’d like a little (or a lot) of something to go with your Sangria … let’s take a look at a few of the sandwiches, starting with the Pepito Ternera. Pepito Ternera The Pepito Ternera is one of the Pan de Cristal selections, which is a thin, crispy bread unique to Spain. It features flat iron steak, caramelized onion, cheese, and mayo. It is SERIOUSLY good, with huge chunks of perfectly grilled steak. The grilled onions add some terrific taste and the cheese is mild, but not lost in the flavor. Pepito Ternera Pepito Ternera And the bread is surprising because it’s crunchy, yet somehow still chewy on the inside. Pepito Ternera We learned that Pan de Cristal translates to “glass bread” and was named such since it makes the sound of shattering glass when you bite in. Next up is one of the Pressed Bikini Sandwich selections: Bikini Quatro Quesos — grilled cheese! It’s served with a side of honey mustard. Bikini Quatro Quesos The steak sandwich was so good that we thought this might be underwhelming following it. But no… Bikini Quatro Quesos The toasty bread has a nice bit of crisp surrounding the cheese (which tasted mostly of Swiss). Bikini Quatro Quesos I’ve not previously dipped grilled cheese into honey mustard before, but it’s something of a game changer. This particular version isn’t as sweet as traditional honey mustard, with something of a Dijon taste. Bikini Quatro Quesos Our final sandwich is the Pollo Fritto, served on a roll. Pollo Fritto Breaded chicken breast comes with piparra peppers, gem lettuce, alioli, brava sauce (you’ll see this sauce again soon), and a sherry dressing. Pollo Fritto And it’s yet another winner! The chicken is flavorful, but not too heavy. The tomato-based brava sauce tastes great and the peppers add some good heat. Pollo Fritto You can also pick up some sides to pair with your sandwich. The Patatas Bravas are potato chips with alioli and Brava sauce. Upon receiving the “dish,” it looks like a normal bag of chips, right? Patatas Bravas bag But when you reach inside… Patatas Bravas Surprise! The alioli definitely presents a pronounced garlic paired with the tomato-based Brava sauce with its natural sweetness and lots of flavor. Patatas Bravas This side is tasty, messy-in-a-fun-way, and very shareable! Another side option is Gazpacho. And if you were expecting a bowl of this chilled soup, like I was… think again! Gazpacho Served in drinkable fashion, this soup made of tomato, cucumber and peppers is — despite its thick appearance — quite light and refreshing! Gazpacho The cucumber shines through unexpectedly and there’s even some nice spice from the peppers. Gazpacho And for dessert? Soft-serve options are Leche Merengada, Fresa (Strawberry Sorbet), or a swirl. The Leche Merengada is based on a classic Spanish drink of sweetened milk with cinnamon and lemon. Leche Merengada The Cast Member strongly suggested we pick up a Spanish-made torta to go with the ice cream (which you can purchase individually or take home in a pack). Tortas Tortas The Leche Merengada is terrific and unique. We didn’t pick up much of the lemon flavor, but it’s super creamy and bursting with the cinnamon. It is tasty on its own… Leche Merengada and Torta But we have to hand it to the Cast Member who suggested the torta to go with it! Leche Merengada with Torta It’s crispy and dusted with sugar, without being too sweet. It’s delicious and adds great crunch to the soft-serve. A sweet end to our first visit to Pepe! Nosh or Not? You’ll want to stop by Pepe if: You really want to try some of the cuisine by Chef Andres, but do not have plans to dine at Jaleo. You do have plans to dine at Jaleo, but would like some more Sangria, please . You’d like to introduce yourself or your family members to Spanish cuisine if it’s new to you. This is a great place to start! You’ll want to pass by Pepe if: You need to save room for your first visit to Jaleo . Overall What a great first impression Pepe offers! There really wasn’t a weak spot in the bunch in our selections, but our favorites were the Pepito Ternera (steak sandwich), the Leche Merengada… and, of course, the Sangria! But no matter what you choose, the more upscale atmosphere and the unusually good eats make this a very memorable counter service option, and we’re so glad it’s available for guests who may not have the time or opportunity to dine within Jaleo. And the really nice thing is that Pepe is not simply an after-thought to add on to Jaleo. It’s a great destination on its own already. Some logistics: Pepe’s hours are 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM. Pepe is one Quick Service credit on the Disney Dining Plan, with Plan guests receiving one sandwich or salad and any drink (including Sangria for of-age guests). Greetings from Disney Springs! Earlier this month we shared the news of a brand new MAC & CHEESE TRUCK joining the other food trucks on the West Side. While the upcoming truck hasn’t been spotted yet, we have been able to sample what we believe to be one of the new offerings! Fantasy Fare Food Truck We couldn’t help but notice the following sign posted right by the Fantasy Fare Food Truck… Bacon Cheeseburger Mac & Cheese Sign It listed a special item: Bacon Cheeseburger Mac & Cheese. The description matches the one released earlier this month for the upcoming Mac & Cheese Truck. While the Cast Member said she could not confirm that it’s the same dish coming to the Mac & Cheese Truck, she did give a smile and a bit of a wink along with it… Bacon Cheeseburger Mac & Cheese This Mac is made with a creamy cheddar and American cheese sauce and ground beef, and is topped with bacon, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, ketchup, mustard, and crunchy potato sticks. It’s a very large portion as well, so it’s easily shareable as a snack and can definitely work as a full meal. Bacon Cheeseburger Mac & Cheese So how was it? Well… Bacon? Good. Beef? Good. Mac & Cheese? Good. Bacon Cheeseburger Mac & Cheese? OUTRAGEOUSLY GOOD. This was delicious — but what else would you expect? The mac and cheese itself is super creamy and uses nice big noodles so you can easily grab a bite with all the components. There’s no shortage of ground beef or toppings — the pickles stand out in particular and really remind you of a traditional tasty cheeseburger. And the potato sticks add a perfect crunch to each bite. This week, cast members and others working to bring the new TRON attraction to life at Magic Kingdom Park celebrated a major milestone — signing their names on one of the first steel support columns. The TRON attraction, which is currently being constructed in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park, is based on the guest-favorite attraction TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland. The TRON attraction is set to open at Magic Kingdom Park in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. Keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for future updates. Because right now they’re serving the new Heart of Te Fiti Cone — for all of us MOANA fans! — featuring LIME Dole Whip! White Water Snacks in Disneyland’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa was recently renovated (see our tour of the refreshed space here!), and we’ve already found some great treats in the quick service spot’s pastry case — including a sweet little Mickey Ears Cupcake for Get Your Ears On! And right now there’s a St. Patrick’s Day Cupcake that’s definitely got the luck of the Irish! St. Patrick’s Day Cupcake at White Water Snacks So many things going on here, and they’re all festive and fun! Even the cupcake wrapper has gotten in on the holiday action this time with lots of shamrocks. St. Patrick’s Day Cupcake at White Water Snacks Decorations include a green sugar hat (evidently taken off the head of tiny leprechaun), a golden sugar horseshoe, and a sugar shamrock.
