We LOVE a good discount… and who doesn’t? Disney Visa So we wanted to share that two Disney Springs dining locations have announced limited-time discounts for Disney Visa cardholders. According to the Disney Rewards website, Paddlefish and Terralina Crafted Italian are both offering 15% off food and non-alcoholic drinks for Disney Visa cardholders. Terralina Crafted Italian Note that these are not typically included on the list of Disney World dining locations which offer 10% off for Disney Visa cardholders. This means that you can enjoy fresh seafood while taking in stunning views from the rooftop at Paddlefish. AND you can devour some handcrafted Italian food while overlooking the water at Terralina Crafted Italian. Paddlefish The good news is that you can enjoy BOTH locations since the offer is going on through June 30th. But, if you are only able to take advantage of this discount once…check out our reviews of Paddlefish and Terralina Crafted Italian to help you decide which location is the best decision for you! Buzz Lightyear Spirit Jersey The back says “Space Ranger Action Figure.” (Does anyone else hear Woody in their heads? “YOU ARE A TOY!!”) Buzz Lightyear Spirit Jersey You can also snag both the Buzz and Woody spirit jerseys on shopDisney.com. A certain Walt Disney World theme park is getting ready to welcome a LOT of people… Entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios Ahead of the August 29th opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is making changes to the park entrance with a new drop-off for guests using the tram and a new bag check area. Updated Entryways Now that Hollywood Studios has all-new bus loops, the area which formerly housed the bus stops serves as the new parking lot tram drop-off location. Updated Entryways Updated Entryways (Which, conveniently, is near the restrooms ). Updated Entryways What feels like huge open space now is bound to fill up once the crowds arrive for Galaxy’s Edge, but it does look great and welcoming. Updated Entryways The new bag check is huge and ready to accommodate LOTS of guests. New Bag Check Even with these results, though, work continues, as you’ll now encounter walls surrounding the previous bag check. Work continues In any case, the space is much improved after months of work. And, of course, these aren’t the only transportation changes at Hollywood Studios, what with the simultaneous preparation for the Disney Skyliner gondola system to begin carrying guests to and from the park this fall. Disney Skyliner Gondolas!! And, in fact, changes to the entrance and exit processes are also currently in progress at Magic Kingdom and Epcot, too. And it’s all to get ready for more magic than ever inside the parks! What do you think of the changes — so far — at Disney’s Hollywood Studios? Please let us know with a comment! If you’re a regular visitor to Walt Disney World or if you pay particular attention to menu boards or your receipts while you vacation, you may have noticed some inconsistencies in the pricing of items and foodstuff across the sprawling property. So why — oh, why! — does a Mickey Pretzel seem to cost more in some Disney World locations versus others? Why are certain resorts taxed at a higher rate? And what’s the deal with water that’s even more expensive than usual? Let’s get into it. Cinderella Castle Mickey Pretzel, why art thou pricier? Imagine this scenario: on day one of your vacation, you purchase a Mickey Pretzel (with gooey cheese sauce included!) for $6.59 at Magic Kingdom’s Lunching Pad. It’s delicious, and on day two, you must have another. You stop at a pretzel cart in Epcot to discover that the SAME snack is now $7! What’s the deal? Beautiful Mickey Pretzel If you read the fine print on many of the theme parks’ free-standing snack kiosks and stands, you’ll discover that tax is “included where applicable” — and that means the Mickey Pretzel! So when you’re purchasing your snack at a stand, you’re not really paying more — they’re just listing the price with tax included versus not included. Future World Pretzel Cart Do The All-Star Resorts Have A Hidden Fee? No, not really, but guests staying at an All-Star Resort hotel are paying a smidge more in taxes than at any other resort at Walt Disney World. Who’s fault is that? Osceola County! That’s right: geography is to blame for this slight increase in the tax rate on rooms at the All-Stars. Do the All-Stars have a hidden fee? That’s because these properties are located just over the Orange/Osceola County line, and Osceola County’s tax rate is higher. Add that higher rate to the flat state tax (6%), and you get 7.5% taxes versus Orange’s 6.5%. Blame it on Osceola! That tax rate also impacts purchases made in Osceola County, so your bottle of Dasani will cost a few cents more at End Zone Food Court and at All-Star Sports than it does at Sunshine Seasons at Epcot. It’s that county tax coming back to attack your wallet again! Aladdin Merchandise Display If you’re really set on pinching pennies — and we totally know how important that can be at Walt Disney World — consider making your purchases elsewhere if you can. For example, if you’ve gotta have a particular souvenir (we’re looking at you, adorable Aladdin merch!) and know you can find it at Disney Springs or in a Park, plan to buy it there instead. (Remember that if you don’t want to haul a purchase around all day, you can have it held for you at Guest Services at the front of the Park or shipped to your resort hotel directly!) Save your pennies by shopping elsewhere! We know as well as anyone that it’s expensive to vacation at Walt Disney World, but these wacky price inconsistencies are part and parcel of living that Disney life. Still, when you’re trying to be mindful about spending, it’s helpful to know what’s going on behind the receipts. And if you want to be even better prepared for some hidden Disney expenses, check out this DFB Guide YouTube video where we break ’em down! What are some hidden costs of a Walt Disney World vacation that you’ve encountered? Tell us about them in the comments. Hey, y’all! It’s time to visit a bunch of Walt Disney World Resort hotels to see What’s New (and what’s cool!)! We’re hitting up six resorts, so leave your carry-on with luggage services and put on some sunscreen– it’s time to go exploring! Art of Animation What’s New at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort We’re starting at Art of Animation, where you’ll find the Skyliner Station which will service AoA and Pop Century Resorts when the new gondola transportation system starts carrying guests this fall. Construction continues on the station itself, but we’re making a pit stop. Yeah, it’s a bathroom break. You’ll find the new Skyliner Station bathrooms on the Art of Animation end of Generation Gap Bridge. Skyliner Station Bathroom Construction And with all those ubiquitous construction fences, you might think we couldn’t get a good shot of how things are progressing, but we’re not above shoving a phone through a gap, so… Skyliner Station Bathroom Construction Check it out! The exterior structure seems to be in good shape, and forms are down and ready for concrete walkways. We’ll keep an eye on those colors to see if the color scheme remains blue and yellow, but we otherwise love the sail-like shape of the overhang. Maybe it’s supposed to look like a page turning, similar to exterior decor at Art of Animation? Skyliner Station Bathroom Construction There appears also to be a water fountain (can we get a bottle refiller station, please?!) and signage, too! It’s fun to see things coming together! Skyliner Station Bathroom Construction Construction doesn’t stop at the Skyliner Station, though, as part of Art of Animation’s lobby is currently closed for construction. We’re told they’re working on the floors (and we hope they’ll keep the colorful tile!). Note that the main entrance is closed, so guests and visitors are being directed to use the side entrance that’s close to the bus stops (and behind those large animation pieces you can see from the parking lot). Main Entrance Closed Main Entrance Closed Notice that about half the lobby is blocked off as work progresses behind that big ‘ol barrier. Lobby Partially Closed Off They’ve tried to spiffy it up with some animation artwork, but, you know, black plastic just isn’t working with the decor. Lobby Partially Closed Off Lobby Partially Closed Off Word is that once one section is complete, work will progress to the next section of the lobby and, finally, through the Ink & Paint Shop. Cast members tell us the work is expected to continue through September. Ink & Paint Shop Inside the gift shop, there are plenty of H2O+ products for purchase, and the Wish Granted promo (complimentary gift with purchase of $60+ of H2O products) is still being advertised. H2O+ Collection H2O+ Collection H2O+ Collection H2O+ Collection Free Gift with Purchase We spotted Toy Story 4 merchandise at a couple of resorts on this visit, including Art of Animation. Click here to see more info about merch at Walt Disney World! Toy Story 4 Merch at Ink & Paint Guests at Art of Animation can participate in Mickey Tie-Dye for a small fee. Signage is up in the lobby to advertise this offering. (We know it’s not new, but we wanted to update for guests heading to the resort!) Mickey Tie-Dye Activity Animation Drawing Classes are also happening twice a day — but the location has moved while the lobby work is underway. Guests can now get their art on in the Resort Airline Check-In Room. Animation Drawing Classes What’s New at Disney’s Pop Century Resort Pop Century Resort’s Everything Pop food court has delineated an Express Lane for those guests paying with cash and credit only. Everything Pop Express Lane The pastry case has several irresistible cupcakes. The Birthday Sundae Cupcake is here, as well as a Cookies ‘n’ Cream. A couple of options are pre-packaged in to-go containers, which is helpful if you’re looking for a bedtime snack. Everything Pop Pastry Case For Mother’s Day, Pop had a Strawberry Lemon Cupcake complete with sugar daisy. Mother’s Day Strawberry Lemonade Cupcake The old Millennial Pink cupcake design remains here (see it from a year ago!) — and it’s guava-flavored! Guava Millennial Pink Cupcake Americana merch is having a heyday, and we spotted this Glow Necklace in the Everything Pop gift shop. Americana Glow Necklace Americana Glow Necklace As for resort amenities, guests can join a “family-friendly painting class” at Painting with a Pop! It’s not a new offering, but it’s a fun one we wanted you to know about. Painting with a Pop! What’s New at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Animal Kingdom Lodge — Jambo House was pretty quiet on our visit! We found this beautiful Sunshine Cupcake at Mara, the resort’s quick service spot. Read our review here! Sunshine Cupcake at Mara Guests were also having some rainy day fun in the lobby creating artwork with rubbings of animal shapes! Rainy Day Activities at Jambo House Good job, kiddos! Animal Rubbings What’s New at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort There was rainy day fun at Saratoga Springs Resort, too. He’s about the friendliest person this side of the Mississippi Delta, so if you’re visiting the French Quarter, don’t forget to say hi! Hi, Steve! French Quarter also had this big, organized pin trading board. What satisfying rows they’ve created. Tiana, we’re there, girl! In our Disney Doodles series, different Disney artists take turns imagining what Disney characters would do or see first if they had the chance to visit a Disney park. In today’s Doodle, Ashley Taylor imagines what the characters from the 1986 film “The Great Mouse Detective” would do if they could visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios. According to her, they’d sniff out a place full of mystery – like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. “Basil is always looking for a new case to crack!” Ashley said. “It’s easy to imagine him wanting to unlock the secrets of the Hollywood Tower of Terror.” View the full article

Boulevards of Movie Dreams Part Two: Imagineering Hollywood
Disney4me posted a topic in Disney Blogs
In a recent Disney Parks Blog post, the inspirations for the architectural glamour at Disney’s Hollywood Studios were highlighted. Twenty-five years ago, five years after opening day, as the park expanded with the addition of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, a new avenue of Southern California history, Sunset Boulevard, was created to address the growth. Interestingly, despite that name, most of the structures are from nowhere near the real Sunset Boulevard, with design exemplars from Pasadena, Inglewood, Beverly Hills, and even Riverside sharing street frontage. Mouse About Town is an exception. It represents the Berman/Kohner Building at 9165-1969 Sunset Boulevard. This Streamline Moderne style building from the 1930s housed Berman Furs and Hollywood talent agent Paul Kohner. “Meet Me at Third and Fairfax” was a popular local saying that became the Market’s slogan. Vintage postcard, public domain. The Sunset Ranch Market recalls the famous Los Angeles Farmers Market, located at Third & Fairfax since 1934. Originally just produce trucks and wagons in an otherwise empty field, in 1941 a few simple buildings were added, along with the clock tower that has become the Market’s icon. Today it is a “town center” for its area, and a beloved tourist destination. The Academy Theater was intended as a home for the Academy Awards®. Photo from Historic American Buildings Survey, HABS CA-2020. Public domain. The entry to Sunset Boulevard is a sort of “theatre district.” Legends of Hollywood is based on the Academy Theatre at 3141 West Manchester Boulevard in Inglewood. The Beverly Sunset Boutique across the street is based on the original designs of the 1931 Warner Beverly Hills Theater at 9404 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. The Carthay Circle name derives from the name of its developer, J. Harvey McCarthy. The auditorium was shaped as a perfect circle, extended up into a cylinder, set inside a square. Vintage postcard, public domain.Farther down Sunset is the familiar tower of the 1926 Carthay Circle Theater. The historic movie theater at 6316 San Vicente Boulevard in Los Angeles hosted premieres of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) and “Fantasia” (1940), and was sadly demolished in 1969. A larger and more elaborate Carthay Circle is now the icon at the end of Buena Vista Street inside Disney California Adventure park. Reel Vogue may have the most obscure and interesting inspirational source, the façade of the 1940 Pasadena Winter Garden on Arroyo Parkway, designed by Pasadena architect Cyril Bennett. Now a nondescript storage facility, it was probably most famous as “home ice” of World and Olympic champion Peggy Fleming. Together with Hollywood Boulevard, this enchanting and nostalgic street represents both a fantasy and a reality, a tangible microcosm of a brief and peculiar lifestyle that was pure Southern California. Recently, we celebrated another major construction milestone for the much-anticipated TRON attraction coming to Magic Kingdom Park at the Walt Disney World Resort – the first steel support columns have been installed! The steel columns will serve as the framework that’ll support the coaster’s track in Tomorrowland. And today, we have a special look at the columns and the progress Walt Disney Imagineers, Disney cast members and project teams have made in bringing the attraction to life. The TRON attraction is based on the guest-favorite attraction TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland. This coaster-style attraction will allow riders to board a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles for a thrilling race through the digital frontier. Earlier this year, cast members continued a Disney tradition by signing their names on one of the first steel support columns for the new attraction. Check out our original TRON story for more images. The TRON attraction is set to open at Magic Kingdom Park in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021. View the full article

Alaska is surely one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. There is nothing quite like seeing the breathtaking, untouched terrain where the mountains and glaciers meet the sea. What makes it even more special are the vast opportunities to spot wildlife, everything from birds and seals, to bears and whales. In the next video of our “Mom’s Take” Alaska video series, Nancy from the Disney Parks Moms Panel shows you some of the wilderness and wildlife you’ll experience on a Disney cruise to Alaska. Of course, no photos and videos will ever compare to seeing it in person, but I hope it will whet your appetite for joining us to experience it yourself this summer! Walt Disney World is regularly stepping up its food game, and that includes quick service (a/k/a fast food) in its parks and resorts. In fact, some quick service dining is so good, it rivals some of the better table service restaurants in the parks and resorts! Let’s take a look at six meals that will change the way you think about Fast Food in Walt Disney World! Cinderella Castle Satu’li Canteen at Animal Kingdom When Satu’li Canteen opened in Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2017, it ushered in a fabulous era of customizable, healthier quick service options. From the start, Satu’li offered a variety of customizable bowls! We enjoyed the Slow-Roasted Sliced Grilled Beef Bowl from the drop, and with fresh options like the Charred Green Onion Vinaigrette and a hearty salad base, Satu’li shows that fast food doesn’t have to be all about fried carbohydrates and dry, flavorless meat! Slow-roasted Sliced Grilled Beef Bowl See our VERY FIRST review of Satu’li Canteen! Columbia Harbour House at Magic Kingdom Columbia Harbour House in Magic Kingdom is a fantastic quick service spot located at the border of Liberty Square and Fantasyland. This ones DOES offer some standard fried options, but also a few lighter options that are sometimes just plain NECESSARY on a hot Disney World day. The fan-favorite Tuna Sandwich and the popular Lighthouse Sandwich have been pleasing guests for years. Lighthouse Sandwich The Lighthouse Sandwich (which disappeared and then reappeared last year) is a vegetarian sandwich featuring hummus, tomato, and broccoli slaw on whole grain bread. Even carnivores appreciate the lightness of this sandwich in a sea of heavier options, making it a surprise hit across the spectrum! Morimoto Street Food in Disney Springs You might think you need to spend an arm and a leg to enjoy the restaurant of an Iron Chef. But in Disney Springs, Morimoto Street Food makes Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s pan-Asian cuisine accessible — in a quick service format! The service window and its adjacent covered patio are connected to Morimoto Asia, the Chef’s table service restaurant. And Morimoto Street Food brings the quality and flavors diners expect! We particularly loved the Shrimp Tempura Roll and the Kalbi Bao Tacos! Kalbi Bao Taco Morimoto Street Food brings Iron Chef-worthy food in a fast, efficient format. Check out our FIRST LOOK and review of Morimoto Street Food! The Polite Pig in Disney Springs The Polite Pig in Disney Springs makes this list for two surprising reasons. First, its proprietors are local culinary stars and James Beard Award-nominated chefs who run a few other restaurants in central Florida. And second: they’ve got 50 types of bourbon ready to pour! In a quick service spot! That bourbon can accompany tasty modern barbecue like the colorful and delicious Southern Pig pulled pork sandwich! The Southern Pig Between the bourbon and the high-end barbecue (not to mention the Gideon’s Bakehouse Cookies!), it’s hard to believe The Polite Pig is a quick service spot. And yet, it is! Gideon’s Cookies — Chocolate Chip Pepe by Chef Jose Andres in Disney Springs Dine in the restaurant of a Nobel Peace Prize-nominated chef? You can do it — and you don’t even need an Advance Dining Reservation! Pepe by Chef Jose Andres is the quick service spot adjacent to Chef Andres’ Jaleo, the Spanish-inspired tapas restaurant that opened in March. The specialty at Pepe is the Pan de Cristal, a thin Spanish bread used to craft gourmet sandwiches. These are table service-quality sandwiches — from a counter service locale! Pepito Ternera on Pan de Cristal Check out our first review of Pepe by Jose Andres here! Tangierine Cafe in Epcot’s World Showcase Our final addition to the list is Tangierine Cafe in the Morocco Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase. This quick service spot serves up fresh-tasting Moroccan specialties like tabouli, chicken shwarma, and hummus, as well as one of our favorite vegetarian dishes: the Vegetarian Platter! The quality of these dishes is surprising given the restaurant’s size, location, and delivery method! It’s so good, we even recommend it over the pavilion’s table service Restaurant Marrakesh! Vegetarian Platter at Tangierine Cafe in Epcot’s Morocco Pavilion: is it right for you? Read more about the eats at Tangierine Cafe here! The development of quick service restaurants and dishes in those restaurants at Walt Disney World is constantly in flux, but we’re thrilled that it’s not too difficult to find a surprisingly good quick service meal that you might even prefer to many of the table service options! (We’re so confident this is true, that we even compiled some of our favorites in this video from DFB Guide!) Don’t Miss Out on Any Disney Fun! Greetings from Colonial America — also known as Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom! We recently learned of an exciting appetizer at Liberty Tree Tavern, and we had to try it! And once I got there, something a little lighter caught my eye as well. So when in Rome — or 1776, right?! Liberty Tree Tavern Atmosphere Liberty Tree Tavern is a full service restaurant in Liberty Square, themed after Colonial America. It’s always been known for its huge Thanksgiving style meal, served family-style, for dinner — and now that platter is available for lunch as well. But we were here for something a little newer…and a little different! Mantel in the George Washington Room The Colonial and Revolutionary War era details are in full swing here. The tables and chairs are made of dark wood, and 18th century paintings adorn the walls. Inside Liberty Tree Tavern And don’t forget that every room is themed after a Revolution-era figure, like George Washington, Betsy Ross, Ben Franklin, John Paul Jones, and Thomas Jefferson. Here’s a famous quote from Mr. Franklin in his themed room. Keys and Benjamin Franklin Quote So how was lunch? Eats As I stated, a family style all-you-care-to-eat meal is available! Check out the full review of this one here! Liberty Tree Tavern Family Style Menu But today, we were interested in the a la carte menu. Liberty Tree Tavern Menu And we started with the reason for our visit: the Traveler’s Loaded Tavern Fries. Traveler’s Loaded Tavern Fries These are thick cut French Fries, topped with Creamy Beer-Cheese Sauce, House-smoked Pastrami, Pickled Red Onions, and Scallions. Traveler’s Loaded Tavern Fries – Close-up Overall, these were good but not great. I really enjoyed the beer cheese fondue, and the pickled onions added a nice acidity and tartness. But the fries were super salty — and being topped by a salty meat didn’t help. That said, the pastrami was prepared nicely and great on its own. The fries were just too salty for my taste, and therefore certain bites were overwhelming. Additionally, it’s not a huge serving for an appetizer. Two people could easily share it, but any more than that and it wouldn’t be a very sizable helping. For these reasons, I would still recommend the Loaded Plaza Fries as the best french fry based appetizer in Magic Kingdom. Colony Salad After such a heavy appetizer, I decided on the Colony Salad for my entree. The Colony Salad is Grilled Chicken, Washington Apples, Sweet Pecans, Applewood-smoked Cheddar, Dried Cranberries on top of a bed of Mixed Greens and topped with a Honey-Shallot Vinaigrette. Colony Salad Close-up Honestly, the stand out of the salad was the dressing. It was flavorful and light, without being too acidic. There was also a very healthy amount of chicken, as well as plenty of apples and dried cranberries. I do wish there had been more pecans for a heartier crunch, but overall it was a very satisfying and flavorful salad. Overall Once again, LTT is solid, but these two menu items just weren’t ticking the boxes for us today. It’s a great spot to try and get a last minute reservation, or hide out when the rain starts! I really did enjoy the salad as a nice, lighter option, however I wouldn’t go out of my way to grab it. Same goes for those Loaded Fries — pretty good but not great. We’ve enjoyed other options on the Liberty Tree Tavern menu much more in the past – check out our other recent lunch review here! However, at the end of the day, the Liberty Tree is one of the few constant, reliable restaurants we can count on! Are you a fan of The Liberty Tree Tavern?
