  2. Supporting our active-duty military personnel and veterans is a tradition that began with our founders Walt and Roy Disney who both served their nation during World War I. And I am honored to continue that legacy at Walt Disney World today alongside my many fellow veteran cast members. March of 2012 was a special day in Disney history. It’s when we first introduced our company-wide Heroes Work Here initiative, which has since encouraged thousands of active-duty military personnel and veterans—like myself—to join the Disney team. And yesterday, to honor Veterans Day 2019, a few of these veterans were selected to represent the countless heroes among us by serving as Veterans of the Day at Magic Kingdom Park. From being honored as grand marshals ahead of the Festival of Fantasy parade to participating in our sunset flag retreat ceremony, veteran cast members Austin, Bryan and Marilyn gave us a salute to remember as thousands of guests joined us in thanking them for their sacrifice and service. To the many heroes who work here, heroes who visit here and heroes across the globe—we thank you for your service and hope you had a memorable Veterans Day! View the full article
  3. Oh how we love those opening day Disneyland attractions. They’re like riding through history! Sleeping Beauty Castle Holiday Decor Amidst all the holiday news from Disneyland, we just got word that one of those opening day classics is going to get a little TLC in the form of a pretty hefty refurbishment. So which attraction is going to get a little bit of a pick-me-up? It’s the notoriously frightening yet lovable Snow White’s Scary Adventures! According to the Orange County Register, Disneyland has filed for a building permit with the city of Anaheim to undergo a $445,000 refurbishment on the classic dark ride in 2020. This doesn’t seem like a TON of money for an attraction refurbishment, so we’re interested to see what Disney does in terms of change and restoration. ©Disney The permit states that crews will “remove and replace show elements, install new structural beams, refurbish rock work and make electrical upgrades.” All that seems pretty behind the scenes but it does hopefully mean we’ll be enjoying the ride for years to come! But, one part of the permit makes us think we might see a few changes to the ride experience after the refurb. The permit mentions new projector platforms which could mean new lighting and visual effects on the ride. Sleeping Beauty Castle We’ll have to wait and see though! The refurbishment should take place in 2020 but there’s no word on when the ride will be closed or how long the work will take. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we find out! 5. Growing up, my favorite movie was Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” I loved the music, the thingamabobs, and above all else, Flounder, who to this day is still one of my favorite Disney characters. This is probably the ideal time for me to take a moment to thank my older siblings for letting me watch this movie over and over again on a loop during my entire childhood. It’s hard for me to believe, but this classic “tail” is approaching its 30th anniversary. To celebrate, I’m sharing my favorite Disney PhotoPass opportunities available around Walt Disney World Resort where Disney PhotoPass photographers can make you feel part of Ariel’s world. Take a voyage to Prince Eric’s Castle with the help of a Disney PhotoPass photographer and virtual backdrops at the Disney PhotoPass Studio at Disney Springs. Ask a photographer in Fantasyland to add one of Ariel’s undersea friends to your Magic Shot! Meet Ariel at her grotto. Pose with a dinglehopper at the Disney PhotoPass Studio inside of Sir Mickey’s. Commemorate your visit to Fantasyland with a photo in front of Prince Eric’s Castle. Life is the bubbles! Use your bubble wand to make any spot feel like it’s under the sea. Enjoy making a splash with these treasures during your next visit! View the full article
  6. In the lexicon of Disney, there is probably no word more often paired with “Disney” than “Magic”—from the earliest short cartoons through the animated features, all the way to the name of a luxurious Disney Cruise Liner, “Disney” has long been associated with conjuring, spells, and enchantments. Around the world, Disney Parks are in the magic business daily, and within many of those enchanting locales, guests can find special shops and boutiques dedicated to sleight of hand, trickery, and illusion. On the opening day of Disneyland, a magic shop opened—but it’s probably not the one that you might think of. Not on Main Street, USA, but in Fantasyland, Merlin’s Magic Shop premiered adjacent to Sleeping Beauty Castle on July 17, 1955, under license to a firm called Taylor & Hume. “Taylor” was Merv Taylor, who had taught art, mechanical drawing, electric shop, and metal craft; but in 1940 a magician performing at his school took a broken prop to Merv to fix, which sparked his interest in magic. Taylor combined a new passion for stage illusion and his manufacturing expertise to pioneer the making of high-quality stage magician’s props. “Taylor is a former Los Angeles schoolteacher who became interested in magic and left his school work [sic] to build the largest magic manufacturing plant in the world,” a contemporary news article said. Taylor worked in cutting edge materials such as stainless steel and acrylic Plexiglas (he’s said to be the first to apply these materials to such a craft), and in 1948 he added a retail magic store to his Merv Taylor Magic Company manufacturing shop in North Hollywood. It’s said that Walt Disney himself approached Merv Taylor in 1955 and asked him to be part of Disneyland. Taylor teamed up with his brother, Bud Taylor, and businessman James Hume, and together they created Merlin’s Magic Shop. Disney Legend Steve Martin returns to his roots at the Main Street Magic Shop in Disneyland. © DisneyLocated in a picturesque Tudor cottage in the courtyard of Sleeping Beauty Castle, much of the inventory reflected what had been successful at Taylor’s original shop—rubber masks, practical jokes and “gags” like comical teeth, false eyelashes, a “severed finger,” a “third eye,” and one item that earned the affection of a young employee named Steve Martin, an “arrow through the head.” Martin remembered the goony prop joke that became a trademark during his early stand-up days, “The arrow-through-the-head was a thing we used to sell at Disneyland. It was just so silly. It was like anti-comedy.” Martin spent three years at Merlin’s Magic Shop in Fantasyland. There, he participated in another of the shop’s well-remembered features, demonstrating the packaged magic tricks and practical joke items on sale. Martin recalls that he learned all the tricks, and collected all the jokes, writing down every gag. “I knew every nook and cranny of the shop,” he says. The Fantasyland location was so successful that when the Disneyland Hotel officially opened in 1956, Taylor & Hume opened a toy and trick shop (along with sundries and liquor!), called Taylor & Hume’s Magicland. The Long Beach [California] Independent reported on August 24, 1956, that “Magicland Toy Shop and Disneyland Sundries are operated by James A. Hume and Merv Taylor. Hume is the owner of the Palm Springs Music Co., the North Shore Club in Tahoe and the Hunter Shop in Palm Springs.” Inside the Park, Main Street Magic Shop opened in 1957 (replacing the Wonderland Music Shop), offering similar merchandise and in-person demonstrations of hand magic and illusion tricks, as well as comic patter and performance from the cast members, like its Fantasyland precursor. The July 28, 1977 issue of the Disneyland Line employee newsletter described the “quaint, cozy specialty shop” where “Shelf upon mysterious shelf filled with such oddities as joy buzzers, garlic taffy, dribble glasses and rubber masks attract the wandering eyes of visitors to the shop—and sometimes the wandering fingers of some of the more youthfully enthusiastic guests!” A 1968 view of the Main Street Magic Shop at Disneyland. Note the Sam McKim “Fun Map” on the wall at left. © Disney In 1959, Merv Taylor sold his magic business in Los Angeles to the venerable Owen Brothers (tracing its origins to 1891, Owen Magic is still in business today) and the rights to some of his apparatus, in order to focus solely on his Disneyland locations. The Taylor & Humes Disneyland leases expired beginning in 1965, and Merv Taylor passed away in 1974. Merlin’s Magic Shop in Fantasyland closed in January of 1983, when it became the Briar Rose Cottage (and over the years has housed Mickey’s Christmas Chalet, Villain’s Lair, and the Castle Heraldry Shoppe), while the Main Street Magic Shop has remained to this day. By the time Walt Disney World was being conceived in the late 1960s, the attraction and merchandise mix at Magic Kingdom Park was, to a large degree, influenced by “tried and true” elements of Disneyland, and the understanding that new guests would want to see many of the familiar components that had made the Anaheim park such a worldwide phenomenon. The Main Street Magic Shop at Disneyland has been a popular tenant at 102 East Main Street since 1957. © Disney Thus, on opening day in 1971, the House of Magic was an occupant of Main Street, U.S.A. located on the Northwest Block between the Penny Arcade and Tobacco Shop. The street façade architectural and color styling had a somewhat sinister “Gothic Revival” feel, the mansard roofline evoked a Charles Addams vibe suitable to the mysterious merchandise within. As its Disneyland precursor had, the House of Magic sold cards, hand tricks, masks, puzzles, and “gags.” Cast members bantered as they performed various hand magic and demonstrated products for sale. In addition to the lighter fare, House of Magic had some fascinating and mystical variety merchandise, including plaster skulls and tombstones, highly-detailed and frequently rather grisly “movie quality” masks, as well as the “party” style rubber head masks made famous by Don Post Studios, such as the “Old Man,” “Witch,” “Clown” or the uncharitably-named “Goof.” The House of Magic closed on March 19, 1995. Its exterior was remodeled and its interior was absorbed into the Main Street Athletic Club. But in a turn of events appropriate to its mysterious identity, in 2017 the street façade was magically returned to its 1971 roots, complete with its signage promising “Tricks” and “Puzzles.” While the interior remains an extension of the Emporium, window displays and occasional merchandise selections celebrate the sorcery of the appearances and disappearances so often associated with magical locales. Demonstrations and illusions always draw an appreciative audience in the Magic Shop at Tokyo Disneyland. © DisneyWorld Bazaar at Tokyo Disneyland bears a strong resemblance to Main Street U.S.A. at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park—including a Magic Shop with the same architectural façade, but with the simple medallion marquee reading “Magic Shop,” and graphic signage that promises “Novelties,” “Puzzles” and “Illusions.” The interior merchandise and cast member demonstrations echo the classic Disneyland model, while the official guide material teases, “Enter the mysterious looking doorway if you want to learn to do magic like Mickey in “Fantasia.” This shop is full of magic tricks, props, and other items to turn you into a master magician. Don’t miss the live magic trick demonstrations!” Tucked away in Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant (Sleeping Beauty Castle) in Disneyland Paris, guests will happen upon a quaint cottage, home of Merlin l’Enchanteur. In this rustic hut of the famous wizard, shoppers can browse magic-themed gift items, including “medieval” relics, objets d’art in delicate glass and etched crystal, and enchanting jewelry, as well as observing the fine craft of artisan glassware being made. Within the cottage is a discreet passage that descends into a foreboding cavern with a fearsome reptilian prisoner. Merlin is a world traveler, with homes in Paris and here in Hong Kong—and who knows where else? © DisneyA similarly-themed store can be found next to Mickey’s PhilharMagic in Fantasyland at Hong Kong Disneyland, although not specifically a “magic shop,” Merlin’s Treasures, a quaint cottage tucked into the coziest corner of Fantasyland promises a place “where wizards of every age can discover spell-binding souvenirs and all sorts of magical merchandise!” Disney Parks are daily reminders of the magic inherent in the Disney experience, and over the years, some unique locations within those destinations have allowed guests to see, experience, and even take home some “tangible magic.” View the full article
  7. On our recent trip through Fantasyland at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, we noticed something was out of place! Be Our Guest Restaurant And the ominous clouds looming over the Beast’s Castle only added to our growing sense unease! Alas! We discovered the source of our unrest when we stumbled upon the spot where we’ve always known Maurice’s Amazing Popcorn Machine to be! And it was strangely VACANT! Where had Maurice and his delicious popcorn run off to? Maybe he’d finally had enough of “this provincial life?“ Where Maurice’s Popcorn Cart Used to Be But luckily Maurice’s Amazing Popcorn Machine hadn’t traveled far — it’s currently located across from Storybook Treats as you make your approach to Be Our Guest Resturant! Maurice’s Popcorn Cart at Its New Location While we’re not sure if this is a permanent change, Maurice’s Amazing Popcorn Machine may have relocated to make more space for the Gaston meet and greet has recently been taking place under the awning of Bonjour! Check out the Maurice’s Amazing Popcorn Machine’s new location for yourself next time you’re strolling by Fantasyland — and don’t forget to stop by Gaston’s Tavern for one of our favorite Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party treats, Gaston’s Cheese Dippers! 14. Disney’s Wilderness Lodge at Walt Disney World Resort will host an “Afternoon with an Artist” at Reunion Station on Nov. 17 from 2-6 p.m. The complimentary event will allow Members and guests to meet Disney artist Michelle St. Laurent while enjoying a sparkling wine toast and passed hors d’oeuvres. If you’ve visited the Epcot International Festival of the Arts or an Art of Disney shop on property, you’re likely to recognize the colorful, timeless style of this popular artist, who says that, through her work, she aspires, “to recreate the classic Disney magic, which allows each of us to be a kid again.” Inspired by Italian Renaissance painters Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci at a young age, Michelle made it her goal to become a Disney artist when her family moved to Florida at the age of 16. She worked at Magic Kingdom Park throughout high school then attended the Art Institute in Ft. Lauderdale, majoring in Advertising and Design. Buuut, you get your turkey on NOW with the latest snack in Disney World! The turkey poutine has made its return again this year at The Daily Poutine in Disney Springs! Daily Poutine Holiday Vibes Although we’ve previously seen this dish called the Holiday Turkey Poutine… Holiday Turkey Poutine …this year’s version has a new name, Gobbler Poutine! 19. As if we haven’t seen enough adorable holiday merch pop up all over Walt Disney World (We’re looking at you Mickey Elf popcorn bucket!!)… Mickey Elf Popcorn Bucket The Peppermint Bottle Topper we first spotted in Disneyland has made its way to the East Coast! If you’re feeling festive, we found these peppermint cuties at the beverage carts around Disney Springs. Peppermint Straw They come with the included purchase of a beverage and are priced at $10.00 when purchasing a water, and $11.00 when purchasing a bottled soda. In Disneyland, they’re sold independently from bottled beverages. We think this pairs nicely with the returning Pluto Popcorn Bucket! Peppermint Straw Disney has been upping their game with the adorable beverage related items. The Sven Sipper and the Light-Up Mickey Jingle Bell Sipper are just AWESOME, and this fun addition to the lineup doesn’t disappoint! 21. We are loving all the delicious seasonal treats we’ve been having around Disney’s California Adventure Park. Schmoozies!!! While we LOVED the Churro Shake while at Schmoozies!, sometimes, simple is best when it comes time to treat yo self. Schmoozies! in Hollywoodland is highlighting a classic Italian coffee-based dessert. A marriage of delicious and simple ingredients, the Holiday Affogato, is here for a limited time only. Holiday Affogato Let’s be honest… we could all use a lesson in simplicity sometimes. This dessert combines your choice of peppermint or cinnamon-brown sugar ice cream that is then “Drowned” in espresso. Molto Delizioso! Cinnamon- Brown Sugar Affogato This was FANTASTIC! The espresso is rich and very bold in flavor so it pairs perfectly with the sweet ice cream. A true holiday delight! Last year, the dessert was only available with peppermint ice cream (which we loved!) but we think the cinnamon-brown sugar ice cream really took this over the top this year! The Holiday Affogato is $5.99 and available for a limited time only from Schmoozies. Read more about last year’s Peppermint Affogato HERE! 23. It’s a Tale as old As Time… the holidays arrive and with it comes all sorts of seasonal treats at Disneyland! Sleeping Beauty Castle Holiday Decor We’re heading to Fantasyland’s Red Rose Taverne, where they are offering two new seasonal items. If you find your stomach ROARING with a BEAST of an appetite, look no further than the Beast’s Forbidden Pastrami Burger. Priced at $16.49, we were positively enchanted by this burger! Beast’s Forbidden Pastrami Burger Appearances alone, this is one of the better looking burgers we’ve seen inside the parks. Other seasonal burgers, heavily hyped through promises of something amazing, can sometimes fall short. Not here! While other Disney Parks burgers will have you thinking WHERE’S THE BEEF?, This burger is FULL OF MEAT! Of course, the winning ingredient for us was that uncured wagyu pastrami…simply DELICIOUS!! The spicy mustard aïoli was just too good and the Angus beef Patty was VERY moist and actually pretty thick! Beast’s Forbidden Pastrami Burger The “skewered accompaniment” alone was like a side dish, featuring pepperoncini, pepperoni, and a cherry tomato! This burger could easily hold its own compared to other gourmet burgers we’ve had outside of the parks! We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but we’ll be sad to see this one go at the end of the season! Beast’s Forbidden Pastrami Burger Now, after ALL that savory if you’re STILL hungry and looking for something sweet, Red Rose Taverne is offering the seasonal Pumpkin Spice Shake. Priced at $7.49, it’s a Frozen blend of White Chocolate and Pumpkin Spice with Salted Caramel and Whipped Cream sprinkled with pie crust crumble Pumpkin Spice Shake The pumpkin spice shake itself wasn’t overpowering at all, so not to worry those who are not into strong PS flavors. It was topped with caramel and whipped cream, which of course are two things you can never go wrong with. Pumpkin Spice Shake The shake was plenty tasty, but nothing particularly unique and outstanding. We keep thinking of the Halloween release version of a pumpkin spice shake in Cars Land which we happened to love because of the large, fresh Graham cracker pieces on top of the whipped cream. Those Graham crackers, along with the seemingly thicker shake, outshined this Red Rose Taverne version a bit. This shake is good, but it could be plussed a bit more to add to the uniqueness. All in all, these are both solid additions to Disneyland’s 2019 seasonal treats! Learn More About ALL The 2019 Disneyland Holiday Treats! 24. We warned you that the new Olaf Piñata would be making landfall soon at Disney World… The Ganachery And while we thought we had until November 15th to brace ourselves for his impact (sharpen our weapons, protect all the women and children, etc.), we were caught totally off guard when we stopped by The Ganachery in Disney Springs today and There. He. Was. From press photos of the Olaf Piñata that Disney released with their Frozen 2 inspired foods we knew we’d be dealing with a sizable foe. His dark, piercing eyes seemed to stare into our souls. And we don’t remember Olaf having such sharp pointy teeth! Photo via Twitter / @DisneySprings And when we saw the Olaf Piñata IRL today, we were more than happy that it had a dome serving as a protective barrier between us and IT! We’re in support of the decision to make his little carrot nose orange, But he’s still a little more nightmare than fairy tale! Read more about the Olaf Piñata here! Olaf Piñata OK we kid, we kid! He’s cute in his own…loveable kind of way. We’ve rarely met chocolate we didn’t love — including Olaf! (Plus The Ganachery’s chocolates are phenomenal!) See the Olaf Piñata for yourself at The Ganachery — if you dare! Or better yet, take him home with you — he is made out of milk chocolate, and filled with mini pumpkin spice marshmallows, after all! 25. It’s time to do the Turkey Trot right on over to B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. at Disney Springs. B.B. Wolf’s Sausage Co. We made a beeline right to the house of sausage to try a new seasonal offering, Turkey Sliders! Turkey Sliders Priced at $10.99, this dish features two sliders that come loaded with turkey patties, muenster, arugula, cranberry sauce, and a brown gravy on the side. Turkey Sliders They were absolutely AWESOME! At first, we were like brown gravy? GROSS! But after one bite with the gravy, we were like YESSSSSSSS! More gravy please! The Cranberry adds the perfect pop of sweet and tart while arugula brought a nice level of crunch. Turkey Sliders Am I the turkey? Because we are STUFFED! B.B.
