We’re just DAYS away from the launch of one of EPCOT’s most popular annual events, as the 2026 Flower & Garden Festival is set to begin! Butterfly topiary The 2026 Flower and Garden Festival is set to run. from March 4th through June 1st, and feature all of the features we’ve come to expect over the years, including food, entertainment, and — of course — plenty of plants! Let’s begin with the food, as this year’s festival features an assortment of 20 outdoor kitchens offering more than 75 new menu items for festival-goers to enjoy. Some of our favorite returning booths include Beach Grub (home of the Seafood Bake), BRUNCHCOT (with French Toast Bites), Honey Bee-Stro (with Chicken and Waffles), and The Citrus Blossom (with tempura shrimp we dream about all year long)! The 2025 Citrus Blossom Menu Arguably, the most unique part of the festival, at least from a visual presentation perspective, is the character topiaries. The confirmed list of topiaries for the 2026 festival includes: Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Bo Peep and her sheep, Lotso, and the Pixar Ball Mike Wazowski & Sulley – Creations Shop Figment, Flower Topiaries and Flower Towers – World Celebration Plaza Encanto (Mirabel, Antonio, Isabela and Luisa) – Near the Imagination Pavilion Simba and Friends (Rafiki, Simba, Mufasa and Sarabi) – Near the Imagination Pavilion Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Chip, Dale and Pluto Lightning McQueen & Mater – near Connections Cafe Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy – Near Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Stitch – Near Mission: SPACE Tinker Bell’s Fairy House Garden – United Kingdom Pavilion Winnie the Pooh and Friends (Rabbit, Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger) – United Kingdom Pavilion Lady and the Tramp – Italy Pavilion Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – Germany Pavilion Beauty and the Beast – France Pavilion Tiana – The American Adventure Pavilion Miguel and Dante from Coco – Mexico Pavilion Lady and the Tramp This year’s Garden Rocks Concert will feature a lineup of new and returning acts performing nightly from March 45th to June 1st in the America Gardens Theater at 5:30 PM, 6:45 PM, and 8:00 PM. Croce: Croce Plays Croce May 29th-30th — Queensrÿche May 31st-June 1st — Maverick City Music Garden Rocks Concert A word of advice: if you want to catch a specific show, see if any Dining Packages remain available for your desired date. Dining Packages are available to pair breakfast, lunch, or dinner (either a three-course meal or full buffet with a beverage — non-alcoholic or alcoholic for of-age guests — based on location) at a participating EPCOT restaurant with guaranteed priority seating for an evening show on the same date. The exception is Spice Road Table, where each guest receives 2 small plates and a nonalcoholic beverage (or alcoholic beverage for Guests 21 and older), and a shared tagine and a shared dessert platter for the table. ©Disney The launch of the 2026 Flower & Garden Festival is just days away! Planning a Universal Orlando trip takes serious coordination, and the last thing you want is to show up and find out a major attraction is down for refurbishment. Universal Orlando Universal has a handful of closures coming up in 2026 that are absolutely worth knowing about before you lock in your travel dates. Whether you’re visiting Islands of Adventure or Volcano Bay, these are the dates we’d seriously consider working around. Let’s get into it. Jurassic Park River Adventure: January 5th, 2026 – November 19th, 2026 This one is the big one. Jurassic Park River Adventure closed on January 5th and won’t be back until November 19th, which means it’s essentially out of commission for almost the entire year. Jurassic Park River Adventure That’s a long time to be without one of Islands of Adventure’s most iconic attractions, and if you’re visiting this summer, especially, you’re going to feel its absence. We know the refurbishment is going to be worth it in the end, but patience is definitely going to be required here. If riding this one is high on your priority list, you’ll want to plan your trip around late November or beyond. Me Ship, The Olive: April 19th, 2026 – April 25th, 2026 Okay, this closure is significantly shorter, but it’s still worth flagging, particularly if you’re traveling with little ones. Me Ship, The Olive is a play area in Islands of Adventure that honestly doesn’t get enough credit. It’s got three levels of climbing nets, passageways, slides, an interactive piano, and you can even squirt water at guests floating by on Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges. For families with kids who need to burn some energy, it’s genuinely one of the better spots in the park. ©Universal Islands of Adventure isn’t exactly overflowing with kid-specific experiences, so losing even one of them for a week stings a little. If your travel window is flexible, just dodge that last week of April, and you’ll be totally fine. Universal Volcano Bay: October 26th, 2026 – On or Before March 24th, 2027 If a Volcano Bay day is part of your Universal plans, you’ll want to steer clear of anything from late October 2026 onward. The water park is closing for its annual maintenance beginning October 26th, with a planned reopening on or before March 24th, 2027. That’s a solid chunk of time, so anyone planning a fall or winter trip should factor this in early. If Volcano Bay is a non-negotiable for your group, aim for earlier in 2026 to guarantee it’ll be open and ready for you. Volcano Bay at Universal Orlando The good news is that with a little planning, none of these closures have to derail your trip. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Until then, stay tuned to DFB for all the latest from Universal Orlando. I’m an Orlando Local, and I’m Begging You To STOP Sleeping on Universal Orlando. The year 2026 will be known as the year of big changes for The Walt Disney Company. In the parks, we’re seeing three of Disney World’s four parks getting new lands, rides, and expansions. Disneyland is also getting a new land, ride, and expansion. ©Disney However, the changes go much further than that. On February 3rd, Disney announced that its current chairman of Disney Experiences, Josh D’Amaro, would be stepping in as the company’s new CEO, and that change is happening VERY soon. Bob Iger will be stepping down as CEO of The Walt Disney Company on March 18th, when D’Amaro takes over as the company’s new CEO. Although Iger is stepping down, he has plans to remain on the board and serve as a “strategic advisor,” according to Business Insider. Although Iger was previously expected to wait until the end of the year to step down, D’Amaro is taking over sooner than expected. Josh D’Amaro at Destination D23, 2023 ©Disney What’s most interesting about the March 18th date is that this is also the date that The Walt Disney Company will be holding its annual shareholder meeting. Now, these shareholder meetings are usually when we get pretty big announcements about new movies, peeks at park expansions, and more. With the change of leadership also happening on that date, we expect that D’Amaro might reveal some pretty big things. Josh D’Amaro in Disneyland We’ve already read reports about some big changes that are already happening with Disney World’s Villains Land, although Disney has not yet confirmed anything about that expansion to Magic Kingdom just yet. A change in leadership could mean huge changes in everything, though, including the parks, movies, streaming, and more. We expect to learn more about the direction D’Amaro plans to take the company in on March 18th. Villains Land ©Disney Experts have also sounded off on what they believe D’Amaro will focus on in the future, including more updates about the parks expansions, Disney’s plans for the use of AI, and more NFL integration. We should know more once he takes over, though. We’ll be keeping an eye out for big Disney announcements, so stay tuned to DFB to stay updated. “Of course, I feel the weight on my shoulders.” Josh D’Amaro Comments On Becoming Disney’s Next CEO Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! Joe Rohde, formerly of Walt Disney Imagineering, is releasing a book about creativity. “Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagining the Impossible” will be available in September. “I’ve had a career as a creative person, and I finally have written a book,” Rohde said in a video posted on his Instagram account. He is seen surrounded by art books and wearing his elaborate trademark earring. “This is a book about how creative we can be when we are creative together,” he said. Rohde worked for Imagineering for 40 years, staring in 1980 as a model designer for Epcot. Eventually he moved into roles that included the development of the the Adventurers Club at the now-defunct Pleasure Island; Aulani, a Disney Vacation Club resort in Hawaii; and Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park plus, subsequentally, the addition of Pandora — the World of Avatar land there. The book’s cover may suggest to readers the gravity-defying, arching, mountainous structure seen above the Pandora attractions, which debuted in 2017. “Using real-life experiences from his childhood and career (at Disney and beyond), Rohde delves into the mysteries of the creative mind and unravels how a team of creatives can work in harmony to produce masterful works of art,” the book description reads. Rohde, now 70, retired from Disney in early 2021 and soon later became the “experience architect” for Virgin Galactic. He became an official Disney Legend in 2024. 'Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagining the Impossilbe,' written by Disney Legend Joe Rohde, will be released in September. (Walt Disney Co.) “I have things to do that are different than this,” Rohde said when announcing his Disney retirement in late 2020. “There are things I want to create, there are things I want to do. There’s only so much time in a lifetime to do these things.” The 320-page “Floating Mountains” is now available for pre-order ahead of its Sept. 8 publication date. dbevil@orlandosentinel.com View the full article

If you’re a Muppets fan like we are, you’re going to want to sit down for this. Muppet*Vision 3D will soon be streaming! We love The Muppets! Muppet*Vision 3D closed in Hollywood Studios on June 8th, 2025, to make way for a new Monsters, Inc. land. There were rumors that the show might live on, but we only just now got confirmation! Disney stated there were discussions and “creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future” back when the show closed last summer. They later confirmed that the show was filmed, but that’s about it. Muppet*Vision 3D According to Apple Insider, Jim Henson’s son, Brian Henson, has confirmed that Muppet*Vision 3D will arrive on VR headsets and Apple Vision Pro. This will keep the 3D effects intact while still streaming from home! Apple Vision Pro ©Apple While there’s no official release date, we’re hopeful it will happen soon! The Muppets have had a large comeback in pop culture this year with a new The Muppet Show special featuring Sabrina Carpenter, which drew in 7 million viewers in its first week on Disney+. ©Disney The Muppets are also making a large appearance in the Disney Parks. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets will debut this summer at Hollywood Studios. The ride follows the Electric Mayhem band with special appearances by Kermit, Miss Piggy, Scooter, and Gonzo. ©Disney Apple Vision Pro already has the technology to stream in 3D, which we’ve seen before! Disney+ partnered with Apple back in 2024 to offer select movies streaming in 3D, including breakout franchises like Avatar, Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Animation, and Disney Pixar. This makes us confident that a release date is coming sooner rather than later. There are SO many! There’s no doubt you’ll have some amazing amenities at your fingertips while sailing the high seas with the Disney Cruise Line…but there’s one notable room issue that kinda bums us out. Disney Destiny Oceanview with Verandah Stateroom Whether you’re staying in a Disney cruise’s stateroom or a luxurious suite at a Disney World hotel, it’s fair to expect some top-notch amenities. While the Disney Cruise Line certainly offers great perks like 24/7 room service, twice-daily housekeeping, and rooms with gorgeous ocean views, there are some notable shortcomings, like the lack of a certain room perk that could be super useful during a long voyage at sea. If you’re accustomed to coming back to your room and storing leftovers in a mini fridge, you might be sorely disappointed… Mini Fridge Unfortunately, most of the rooms aboard a Disney cruise ship don’t have mini fridges — but, rather, they have “beverage coolers.” Depending on your stateroom, these might look more like a drawer instead of a traditional mini fridge. Beverage cooler These beverage coolers don’t offer a ton of space — but more importantly, these coolers are not suitable for maintaining the safe temperatures needed for storing refrigerated medication or liquids like breast milk and formula. Beverage cooler These cooling amenities are designed to keep items merely “cool” (typically 40°F to 45°F or higher) rather than at a consistent, safe refrigeration temperature, so spoilage is always a possibility. And if you want to keep something frozen? Don’t count on it. They usually lack a freezer compartment. This is a problem that Disney has become familiar with, however, and there are some solutions that the company has suggested. For starters, Disney lets you bring a small cooler as part of your carry-on luggage if it is no larger than 12″x12″x12″ and used only for storing baby food, medication, or items related to dietary restrictions. Along with the cooler, you are allowed to bring ice packs, but the cruise ships also offer ice of their own. You can even request ice from that 24/7 room service I mentioned! ©Amazon Additionally, Disney has suggested getting in touch with the Health Center on board your ship, just in case. Often located on Deck 1, Forward, this service can assist with storage. Keep in mind, though, that guests won’t be able to access their staterooms right away, so you’ll either want to try to get a later Port Arrival Time if your medication needs to remain as cool as possible. ©Disney Have you run into any trouble dealing with the beverage cooler in your Disney cruise ship room? There are some pretty unique dining options in Magic Kingdom. You can dine with Pooh Bear and his friends at the Crystal Palace and eat with princesses inside Cinderella Castle at Cinderella’s Royal Table, which is kinda the coolest thing ever. Hi from Woody and Jessie! Another experience is joining the lineup, and we’re pretty excited for it to start. Disney has released a new date, so now we’re circling it in our calendar (and you should, too!). The Diamond Horseshoe is transitioning to Jessie’s Roundup for Cool Kids’ Summer! Starting on May 16th, the Diamond Horsehoe will close for this new experience to makeway and is expected to return in the fall, after Cool Kids’ Summer is over. Diamond Horseshoe Cool Kids’ Summer runs from May 26th to September 8th and started in 2025. We’re so glad it’s back again! At this experience, you can “join Jessie, Woody, and friends for some energetic fun at Jessie’s Roundup, where you’ll craft, dance, and yodel your hearts out in the western revue.” Disney hasn’t released too many details on it, but we’re pretty excited to be able to experience it ourselves once it’s open. Bo Peep & Jessie! Over in EPCOT, GoofyCore will be returning to CommuniCore Hall, where there’s a DJ and dance music. Kids get to play with Goofy and enjoy activities like Goofy Says, Balloon Bonanza, and Parachutes ‘n’ Pipsqueaks. Take a break in CommuniCore Hall! A new (to Disney World) Disney Jr. show will be opening in Walt Disney Studios in Hollywood Studios, too. We’ve seen the show on the West Coast and love that you get to see Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Daisy, and Pluto, and it makes you want to get up and dance. ©Disney We can’t forget about Bluey and Bingo making their Disney World debut in Animal Kingdom! Once you hop off the Wildlife Express Train, you get to play special games directly from Bluey episodes, grab a photo with Bluey and Bingo, and even discover animals native to Bluey’s home country, Australia. Bluey and Bingo We’re so excited for Cool Kids’ Summer to start, and we’ll be in the parks reporting all the changes coming and activities. Make sure you keep following Disney Food Blog for more! If you’ve been someone who’s been going on Disney World vacations for many years, especially if you’ve stayed at Disney World hotels over the years and experienced the perks that came with your reservation, you’ve likely noticed that perks have drastically diminished over recent years. Magical Express sign We’ve certainly noticed it, and as sad as it makes us, there are some pretty good reasons for many of these changes that mean they likely won’t be coming back any time soon. While there are many perks that we miss, there’s ONE we feel a lot of guests agree they want Disney to bring back more than anything. If it was so beloved, why did Disney take it away? Well, let’s dive in! We were devastated when Disney pulled the plug on Magical Express, the FREE service that would pick you up at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and take you to your Disney World hotel (and vice versa). It was magical, beautiful, COMPLIMENTARY, and was a highlight of our vacations for 17 years, but in 2022, Disney got rid of it. We miss the Magical Express So, why get rid of it? We don’t know for sure, but we’ve got a few good guesses as to why this perk went away. COVID-19 Pandemic Struggles We’ve got a feeling that issues from the COVID-19 Pandemic (such as all riding together on one bus) were a big part of it. When Disney World reopened, many services were limited to reduce contact between individuals in an effort to mitigate the spread. One of the services suspected was luggage handling, which meant that Cast Members could no longer handle your bags. Disney’s Magical Express One of the offerings we loved most about Magical Express was that it offered guests the ability to have their checked luggage delivered directly from the airport to their Resort hotel room. When luggage handling went away, that took a big part of the service away from people, and therefore part of the convenience. Monetary Issues Similar to numerous companies all around the world, the pandemic brought major financial strain to Disney. In fact, their revenue took such a hit in 2020 and 2021 that the company lost billions in revenue from the park closures. What does this have to do with Magical Express, though? Well, Disney needed to try to make back some of the money they lost, and getting rid of a free service was one way to do that. Departures Sign While Magical Express being free for guests was a HUGE perk, because it saved them lots of money, it also meant Disney was losing a lot of valuable revenue. Do we like the decision? No, and in fact, we’re still sad about it to this day, but considering how much the park closures affected their earnings, it does make sense. Additional Travel Options While many guests had no problem using Magical Express because it was free, even though it may have taken them longer to get to their resort because the bus dropped other people off first, for those traveling in a bit of a rush, or who wanted to get into the parks ASAP, Magical Express likely wasn’t the best option. By the time Magical Express was done away with, there were not only private taxis people could take from the airport to their accommodation, but Uber and Lyft options were also very prominent and popular (and still are). Magical Express On January 11, 2021, Disney Parks Blog officially announced the plans to discontinue the Magical Express airport transportation service, and part of their quote addressed these competition issues. It stated, “Vacationers have more options to choose from than ever for transportation, including ride-share services that save time and offer more flexibility to go where they want, when they want. In light of this shift, when Disney Resort hotel bookings open for stays in 2022, we will no longer offer Disney’s Magical Express service for airport transportation, starting with arrivals Jan. 1, 2022.” Brightline Train At the time the announcement was made, Disney was also part of the (then new) Brightline Train development, and it was going to take guests to Disney World by the second half of 2023. However, Disney surprisingly backed out of the project in June 2022, meaning that this option would no longer be available to guests. To this day, while the Brightline Train can take you to numerous locations from MCO Airport, Disney is not one of them. Brightline train We are still mourning the loss of the Magical Express, but we are thankful that other options have been put into place. Here’s to hoping that more “free perks” continue to make their way back to the parks because that is part of what truly sets the Disney brand apart. It’s no secret that there are a lot of hotel options near Walt Disney World. From Disney’s own 20+ hotels, to third-party hotels on Disney Property (the Swan and Dolphin Resorts, the Four Seasons), Good Neighbor Hotels in the Disney Springs area, and our focus today: Flamingo Crossings. ©Home2Suites by Hilton | Disney Originally opened back in 2021 after years of delays, Flamingo Crossings is a Disney-developed “third-party” area located on land owned by Disney but technically outside of Disney’s gates. The land is home to businesses, housing used by Disney College Program members, and several hotels that provide access to the resort and its theme parks. The hotels that currently call Flamingo Crossings Town Center home include: A connected TownePlace Suites and SpringHill Suites by Marriott, which share access to a Starbucks location and the Flamingo’s Bar & Grille restaurant. A connected Homewoods Suites and Home2 Suites by Hilton, which share the Dia Feliz Cantina Restaurant. A Fairfield by Marriott, which is home to The Fieldhouse Restaurant. A Residence Inn by Marriott, which is home to Featherstones Bar & Grille. One of the biggest advantages of these Flamingo Crossings hotels (and staying off property, in general) are the prices. Let’s look at some dates during the busy summer season: For a 5-night stay from August 3rd to the 8th, 2026, a hypothetical family of two adults and a 10-year old child will spend $686.25 for a Suite: 1 King, 1 Sofa Bed room at the Flamingo Crossings Springhill Suites. ©Mariott Meanwhile, a standard room at the Value Tier Pop Century Resort on Disney World property WITHOUT theme park tickets, would cost $1,274.63 for the same hypothetical family over the same days. ©Disney That’s nearly a FULL 50% cheaper to stay in an off-property suite compared to Disney’s “lowest” room tier. Now, the hotels located in Flamingo Crossings don’t have access to the same perks as Disney-owned hotels or other “Good Neighbor Hotels” — including Early Entry access. However, given the amount of money a guest staying at Flamingo Crossings can save, they could perhaps budget some towards an After Hours Event, getting extra time in the parks that way. Magic Kingdom After Hours As far as transportation, the Flamingo Crossings hotels do offer paid shuttle service to Walt Disney World’s hotels. Now, once again, that is. perk that you’ll be paying for, which is “free” at Disney World’s hotels. However, as with the Early Entry/After Hours tradeoff mentioned above, the budget savings from staying at a Flamingo Crossing hotel more than make up for the price of the shuttle or using a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft. Rideshare Pick Up Zone Guests staying at these hotels have access to the the dining and retail locations at Flamingo Crossings, including Ellie Lou’s Brews & BBQ, Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ, Hash House a go go, Lime Fresh Mexican Grill, Pieology Pizza, Token Ramen & Tea, Simply Capri Italian Restaurant, White Rabbit Desert Experience, Domino’s, Dunkin’, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Firehouse Subs, Five Guys, Panda Express, Pita Mediterranean Street Food, PDQ ChickeN, Skyline Chili, Starbucks, Wendy’s, Fit2Run Shoe Store, Five Below, Luxor Nail & Spa, Target, The UPS Store, Walgreens, and the 7-Eleven Gas Station. In addition, the complex is also home to an AdventHealth ER, AdventHealth Primary Care+ clinic, and Lake Britt Dental Care for medical needs. Flamingo Crossings Target If you are strictly looking to save money, there’s no real reason to stay on property at Disney World. There are SO many options nearby with transportation to the parks and amazing space and amenities that can seriously save you over 50%. Of course, Disney hotels have so many benefits as well. But when it comes to saving big money, staying off property is a serious win. Next time you’re planning a trip to the Walt Disney World area, be sure to add the Flamingo Crossings hotels to your list of considerations. Stay tuned to DFB for more on Central Florida’s hotels. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed for a while now, and honestly, the timeline might surprise you. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad If you’ve been keeping up with Magic Kingdom news, you already know that the wildest ride in the wilderness went offline back in January 2025. But what you might not know is just how massive this refurbishment actually is, why it’s taking so long, and what Disney is promising when it finally reopens. We’ve got all the details for you right here. It’s Not Your Average Maintenance Closure Let’s just get this out of the way first: this is not a routine touch-up. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed on January 6th, 2025, and Disney has confirmed it won’t reopen until sometime in Spring 2026, making this well over a year of downtime for one of Magic Kingdom’s most beloved classic attractions. Disney is calling this a “mountain-top to cavern-deep refurbishment,” which is a pretty clear signal that something significant is happening here, and it’s honestly one of the more notable ride closures we’ve seen at Disney World in quite some time. Work continues on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. For context, this isn’t the kind of closure where a ride goes dark for a few months, gets some fresh paint and a few replaced parts, and comes back basically the same. Disney has made it clear that what’s happening inside and around that mountain is a full-scale project, and when you look at everything going on in that corner of Magic Kingdom right now, it actually starts to make a lot of sense why this is taking as long as it is. Everything Happening Around It A big part of why this refurbishment is getting so much attention is the sheer amount of construction happening in the surrounding area at the same time. Work on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is expected to overlap with some seriously major changes coming to Frontierland, including the project to fill in the Rivers of America and the early phases of construction for Piston Peak, the highly anticipated Cars-themed land coming to the park. That alone is a massive undertaking, and Big Thunder sits kind of right in the middle of all of it. ©Bioreconstruct on Instagram On top of that, Disney has shared that this refurbishment will also help better connect Big Thunder Mountain Railroad with both Villains Land and Liberty Square. When you’re not just updating a ride but also weaving it into an entirely reimagined section of the park, the scope of the project grows significantly. You can’t rush that kind of work (and honestly, we wouldn’t want them to). When the scale of construction is this large, it usually means the final result is going to be something really special. What Disney Is Actually Promising Here’s where things get really exciting. Disney hasn’t just said they’re doing routine upkeep over there. They’ve specifically teased that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen with what they’re calling “a little bit of new magic,” and they’ve already shared some details about what that means. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad One of the most exciting additions involves the underground portion of the ride. When the trains make their way into the caverns, guests are going to encounter phosphorescent pools along with shimmering, illuminated stalagmites and stalactites. ©Disney Disney is calling this area the Rainbow Caverns, and it honestly sounds breathtaking. But don’t let the pretty visuals fool you, because Disney is also hinting that the Rainbow Caverns aren’t quite as welcoming as they appear. That deep, menacing rumble from within the mountain might just be a sign that guests aren’t entirely wanted down there, which sounds like a fantastic layer of storytelling added to an already beloved attraction. ©Disney The backstory of Big Thunder is also getting more of a spotlight. The lore centers on Barnabas T. Bullion, who struck gold in the Big Thunder region during the early days of America’s first gold rush and founded the Big Thunder Mountain Company. ©Disney His ambitions, however, were no match for the mountain itself. Machines broke down, mines caved in, and no matter how relentlessly the miners dug, the forces of Big Thunder fought back. That’s the world guests are riding through, and it sounds like the refurbishment is going to make sure every inch of the experience reflects that story in a way it hasn’t before. The Bottom Line Is it a bummer that one of Magic Kingdom’s most iconic rides has been sitting dormant for this long? Absolutely. We miss it, and we know you do too. But when you look at the full picture, between the sweeping Frontierland construction happening around it, the new storytelling elements being woven into the experience, and the clear intention to set this classic attraction up for many more years of thrilling guests, the timeline makes a lot of sense. This isn’t Disney dragging its feet. This is Disney doing the work right. Construction continues at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad When Big Thunder Mountain Railroad comes back in Spring 2026, it sounds like it’s going to be worth every single day of that wait. This is your very, VERY important reminder that a special pop-up experience is coming to Disney Springs. We know things pop up in Disney Springs all the time, but this one is dedicated to milkshakes, which means it might just be the best one yet. Let’s try some milkshakes! Black Tap Craft Burgers & Shakes is opening in the old Sprinkles building for a limited time starting on March 2nd. Are you ready for some CrazyShakes? We know (and love) Black Tap from their location in Downtown Disney on the West Coast, where they sell burgers and milkshakes, but they decided to bring the milkshakes over to Florida. This experience will last three months, so you’ll want to make sure you get over there while you can. Black Tap Here’s a look at all the milkshakes coming: BAM BAM SHAKE: Vanilla frosted rim with fruity pebbles® topped with a fruity pebbles® rice krispy treat, strawberry pop-tarts®, laffy taffy®, whipped cream & a cherry THE COOKIE SHAKE: Vanilla frosted rim with cookie crumbles topped with a ‘cookiewich,’ crumbled cookies, chocolate chips, whipped cream & chocolate drizzle COOKIES ’N CREAM SUPREME: Vanilla frosted rim with crushed OREO® topped with a ‘cookies ’n cream’ sandwich, crumbled OREO®, whipped cream & chocolate drizzle BROOKLYN BLACKOUT: Chocolate frosted rim with mini chocolate chips topped with two chocolate brownies, whipped cream & chocolate drizzle SPECIAL EDITION MICKEY CRAZYSHAKE: Vanilla frosted rim with Disney’s Mickey Mouse sprinkles topped with a homemade Mickey Mouse-shaped crisped treat, white & red rock candy, whipped cream, red sprinkles & a cherry We had the opportunity to try a few early, and y’all get ready for milkshake craziness! We started with the Fruity Pebbles Classic Shake for $12. Fruity Pebbles Classic Shake This was SO good! It was portable and easy to walk around with, but we had some issues with the straw and ended up opting for the spoon. The Fruity Pebbles on top had a great crunch, and even as they got soggy, they provided that iconic Fruit Pebbles flavor. It reminded us of the milk after our cereal had been sitting in the bowl, which is super nostalgic and a perfect treat to walk around with. It’s like funfetti We also had the Special Edition Mickey Mouse Shake for $24, which is a strawberry shake with a vanilla frosted rim with Mickey Mouse sprinkles, topped with a homemade Mickey Mouse-shaped crisped treat, white & red rock candy, whipped cream, red sprinkles, and a cherry. We were the FIRST people to try the Mickey Shake on the East Coast — and we’re honored, truly! Mickey Mouse Shake Our reporter said this is the best shake they’ve had in their entire life, and if a food reporter says that, it’s probably pretty good. This thing was massive and very shareable, which we loved, and it even has a spillguard on the cup so the toppings don’t get all over your hands. The strawberry flavor was fresh (no artificial taste here!), and we loved how crispy the crisped treat was on top. Seriously, this was GOOD. It’s perfect to share We’ll be there on opening day to experience even more shakes, so make sure you keep following Disney Food Blog for reviews on the different shakes. 8 RESTAURANTS DISNEY WORLD PROS SKIP IN DISNEY SPRINGS Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! Disney World is in the midst of a massive transformation, with massive construction projects in the Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom all set to open in the next few years. However, all of the new attractions and IP coming to the parks could lead to the return of a controversial Disney system: Virtual Queues. Tron virtual queue sign First introduced in the late 2010s, the virtual queue system was introduced as a way to manage crowds on high-demand new attractions. Instead of standing in line for hours, guests would snag a boarding pass through the My Disney Experience app at specific times (usually 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM) and be called back to ride at a designated time later in the day. In theory, the system helped control congestion and allowed Disney to test new crowd-management strategies on high-profile new attractions, including TRON: Lightcycle/Run, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and Rise of the Resistance. As the sheen of newness wore off and these rides became parts of the Disney World experience, they transitioned to standard queues. Currently, there are no Virtual Queue offerings at the resort. Cosmic Rewind loading area However, that could change later this year with the (re)openings of two major Disney World attractions: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster. The former has been shuttered since January of 2025, and will reopen later this spring with newly rebuilt infrastructure and a sequence based on the classic Disneyland Rainbow Caverns from the Mine Train through Nature’s Wonderland. ©Disney The latter is set to close on March 2nd for a comparatively brief refurbishment, which will see the coaster trade its original Aerosmith theming for a new story tied to the Muppets, including a new pre-show featuring the characters and music from the Muppet group the Electric Mayhem. The new, “Muppetized” version of the coaster is scheduled to open this summer. ©Disney Both reopening coasters are expected to draw large crowds and attention, which may lead to Disney enabling a VQ. Beyond 2026, some of the blockbuster attractions coming as part of Disney World’s expansion may also warrant Virtual Queues in the coming years. After all, the Magic Kingdom’s Piston Peak is going to include a technologically advanced off-road inspired ride… ©Disney … Hollywood Studios’ Monstropolis-inspired Monsters, Inc. land is going to be headlined by the LONG-awaited suspended “door” coaster inspired by the Pixar film’s climax… ©Disney … and Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom will be anchored by attractions inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones, with the former being more likely to potentially feature a virtual queue. ©Disney With a slew of brand-new E-Ticket attractions coming to Walt Disney World in the coming years, Virtual Queues might be on their way back to Walt Disney World. If you’re coming to Disney World with little kids, you’ll probably be looking for any chance you can get to have them burn off a little energy. EPCOT You spend a lot of time waiting in lines, sitting at restaurants, and staying still while watching shows, so it makes sense that the kids will want a chance to run around. Thankfully, there are several locations around Disney World property where you’ll find playgrounds, including the newly renovated one in EPCOT! In World Discovery, next to Creations Shop, there’s a playground with equipment for all the littles — from the toddlers to the 10-year-olds. For a while now, this playground has been surrounded by construction walls, but now, those walls are DOWN. The updated play area! For the most part, it looks like the equipment has been refreshed and the landscaping has been touched up. The layout of the playground is pretty similar to how it was before, with one area for toddlers and one area for older kids. There are plenty of offerings for your kids here. There’s also a seating area with tables for parents to chill and watch their kids while they play — that’s a great addition! (We’re nearly always excited to get more seating in the parks.) This area also has stroller parking available. The playground EPCOT has several great play areas for kids, including Project Tomorrow at the exit of Spaceship Earth and the Advanced Training Lab with an indoor playground at Mission: SPACE. Add in Journey of Water — Inspired by Moana, and your kids won’t run out of things to do!
