Disney World definitely looks and feels a little different now than it did back in March before the historic closures began. And while the only constant at Disney is change, one thing has seemed to hold steady. Rise of the Resistance is just as popular as it has ever been! Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance This highly immersive attraction is STILL running out of those coveted Boarding Groups in seconds each and every day. So if this ride is at the top of your must-do list, you won’t have an easier time getting to ride, even with limited park capacity! Here are three things you need to be aware of if you’re visiting Disney World in the near future and your travel must-dos include riding Rise of the Resistance! Estimated Wait Times Back when Rise of the Resistance first opened in Disney World last December, receiving a Boarding Group gave no indication as to WHEN you would actually be called back to hop in line. Over time, folks have been able to “guesstimate” when they could be called, provided the ride was operating smoothly. However, it was still anyone’s guess for how long you would have to wait. Rise of the Resistance Boarding Groups Sign In a recent update to My Disney Experience, Guests can now see an estimated wait time according to their Boarding Group number. This feature is not 100% accurate, nor is it exactly like a posted wait time like any other ride. But this addition provides an additional convenient planning tool for parties to use when visiting Hollywood Studios! Screenshot of Boarding Group For example, if your estimated wait time is only 10 minutes, you may want to think about heading back to Galaxy’s Edge if you aren’t in the area already! With a shorter return time of one hour, you don’t want to miss your window! Find out what happened to us when WE missed our return window for Rise of the Resistance! Updated Boarding Group Distribution Times Originally, Rise of the Resistance distributed all of its Boarding Groups right at rope drop. This caused quite a commotion every morning in Hollywood Studios, as crowds of Guests were scanned into the park before opening! Hollywood Studios, back in December before park opening! Once the parks reopened, Disney made a MAJOR update by providing additional distribution times, lessening the demand for everyone to be in the park at 10AM. Back when the park first reopened, those distribution times were 10AM, 1PM, and 4PM. Rise of the Resistance Since then, however, Disney has updated the distribution times AGAIN, and now provides two options for Guests to obtain their Boarding Groups. Currently, they are distributed at 10AM and 2PM. Screenshot of My Disney Experience App So if you strike out the first time around or you don’t make it into the park in time, you still have another opportunity! Click here for more tips on securing a Boarding Group for Rise of the Resistance! Automatic Party Members Added on MDE The third new tip you should be aware of is a small but significant change in the actual process of obtaining a Boarding Group. Since its earliest days, you needed to manually add each party member to your Boarding Group so you could all ride together. Screenshot of My Disney Experience App Now, that step happens automatically! On My Disney Experience, each of your eligible party members will be added to your Group, with no extra tapping required! Keep in mind that each member of your party MUST be scanned into Hollywood Studios, and their tickets must be linked to your account. My Disney Experience App This is an especially useful tip if you’re traveling in a larger party, as you can now save valuable seconds while you try to secure a Boarding Group! Read more about the recent updates to My Disney Experience when getting a Boarding Group! While getting a Boarding Group is still one of the more tricky feats when visiting Disney World, there are more tools at your disposal now than there ever were before! From a streamlined My Disney Experience process to helpful tools to plan the rest of your day around Rise of the Resistance, Disney seems to have taken note of the stress-inducing reality of getting a Boarding Group and have done what they can to make it a bit easier! We will continue to keep you posted on Rise of the Resistance and its future updates. And if you have any more questions about snagging a Boarding Group, please let us know!! In June of this year, Orange County, Florida, Mayor Jerry Demings signed an executive order that mandated the wearing of face masks in any public space in response to the global health crisis. Orlando Sign And after an initial surge in cases in July, the daily positivity rate in Florida’s Orange County (in which Walt Disney World is located) has seen a downward trend over the past several weeks. In a press conference on Monday, the Mayor shared that the current average positivity rate in Orange County is 5.9%. He specifically cited August 23rd’s positivity rate of 4.29%, stating that it was the third day in a row that the daily positivity rate was below 5%. The Mayor spoke about receiving questions from the public as to whether he expects plans to relax the mandate. Rainbow Mickey Face Mask His response, per his statement at the press conference, was: “No, I don’t. I intend to leave it in place for the foreseeable future because I believe that it is playing a significant role in reducing the spread of the virus within our community.” This follows recent comments from Orange County officials regarding the possibility of mandated mask-wearing into next year. As we discussed earlier this month, Dr. Raul Pino, the health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County, said that the mask requirement could last, “Until maybe the spring, or until we have a vaccine.” He also credited the county’s face-covering requirements with helping to contain the spike in positive infections. Read about the guidelines for wearing a mask in Walt Disney World here. Walt Disney World has very specific face covering guidelines for guests visiting any area of the Resort — from the theme parks, to the Resort hotels, to Disney Springs. The live-action remake of Mulan is set to release on Disney+ on September 4th. ©Disney Due to the global health crisis, Disney made the decision to offer “Premiere Access” of Mulan on Disney+ in lieu of showing it in movie theaters. The movie will be available to watch for $29.99 via the streaming service. Now, Disney just released an exciting new featurette that has spurred excitement for the film’s premiere! The small teaser features filmmaker Niki Caro and her thoughts behind the story’s history. She states, “This Mulan story is as relevant and resonant as it was when it was first written over 1500 years ago.” She notes that Yifei Liu was the perfect choice for the character Mulan. Liu is an accomplished Martial Artist, can yield a sword, and ride horses. She will get to show off her fierce skills throughout the action-packed movie. ©Disney You can check out some of Yifei Liu’s inspiring stunt work in the featurette below! The storyline is fairly similar to the animated movie but will take a more realistic approach. The description of the featurette claims that Niki Caro “…brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s Mulan, in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known.” We’re only 10 days away from Mulan being released on Disney+! The little green Space Aliens from Toy Story have been busy lately (re)mixing things up with some of our other favorite Pixar characters. Alien Remix But today we spotted our green friend in a more…unique form. As we made our way through Toy Story Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios today, we went to take a swirl with the Little Green Men over at Alien Swirling Saucers. Right near the attraction, we found an…artistic interpretation of a Space Alien on the floor. It’s a little different than the water art we’re used to seeing around Disney World, as this one is made out of masking tape. Very 2020. Alien Creation But what could this message mean? Are the Aliens planning a space invasion? Or, is the claaaaaaaaw coming to save them from our planet? Is it pointing us toward a hidden treasure made of an endless supply of pizza from Pizza Planet? Alien Creation Also, we know this is meant to be an Alien, but are we the only ones getting some Angel Kitty vibes here too? If you don’t know who that is, check out Toy Story That Time Forgot. © Disney/Pixar Whatever cryptic message the Aliens are trying to send us, we hope we can help them out. Although they are starting to return over at Shanghai Disneyland, fireworks are temporarily suspended at the moment in Walt Disney World. Fireworks over Magic Kingdom While we can’t watch Magic Kingdom’s Happily Ever After fireworks show in person right now, we did find a way to bring some of the magic of that show with you no matter where you are! One sip out of this magical tumbler and all your dreams will come true! Okay, well maybe they won’t all come true, but at least the dream of having a super cool Disney-themed tumbler will. The top of the tumbler is shaped like a castle turret and is definitely making us feel like we’re at the most magical place on earth. Happily Ever After Tumbler The castle, in all its glory, with lots of lots of fireworks around it, is featured on this tumbler. Happily Ever After Tumbler And the best part? It lights up! It may not be the same as watching the fireworks in person, but if you play some of the music and sing along, it’s sure to add a little bit of magic to your day. This tumbler comes with a straw, which pokes out of the top of the turret. We love all of the little details on this. Just look at that little brick feature. Happily Ever After Tumbler You can grab this tumbler for $24.99 at Celebrity 5 & 10 in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Looking for some fireworks to watch for spooky season? We’ve been awaiting its arrival for weeks. We called a PSL Hotline to practice our pumpkin mantra. We even spotted it a wee bit early in a Disney World theme park. But TODAY, it’s OFFICIAL. Pumpkin Spice Lattes are BACK! The PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE is BACK in Walt Disney World…along with a few other festive fall treats in Disney World Starbucks locations! Hand in hand with its nationwide release at Starbucks TODAY, we grabbed our Pumpkin Spice Latte at The Trolley Car Café in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Trolley Car Cafe Fall Menu “Fall For All” flavors also feature the Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino and Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew along with the signature Pumpkin Spice Latte. Fall Flavors But that’s not ALL for FALL, Y’ALL! The Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin is up for grabs at the Trolley, too. (Hooray! We LOVE this not-too-sweet-but-perfectly-pumpkin treat!) Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin And this adorable vanilla Fox Cake Pop wasn’t about to miss out on the festive fall fun. Fox Cake Pop He’s just chillin’ in the bakery case with all your other favorite Starbucks snacks. Bakery Case And now, without further ado…HERE IT IS. Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte Our ICED PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE! Ice Pumpkin Spice Latte That’s espresso, milk, and pumpkin and fall spice flavors all topped with whipped cream and just a little more spice… BAM! It’s PSL Time! Yes, it’s true… it’s still August. And — here in Florida — it’s still (very) hot. But in our hearts, and in our Starbucks, and even in Magic Kingdom at spots along Main Street, U.S.A… it’s FALL. See the first fall decorations in Magic Kingdom here! And we are HERE FOR IT. Remember, your other Starbucks locations in the Walt Disney World theme parks are the Main Street Bakery in Magic Kingdom, Creature Comforts in Animal Kingdom, and the Traveler’s Cafe in EPCOT. Now, the only question is… have you had YOUR first PSL of the season yet? Are you a diehard fan of the Pumpkin Spice Latte? Please let us know with a comment! How would you like to start your day hanging out with THIS little guy? Baby Yoda Loungefly Mini Backpack Well, there’s a way you can… because The Child Mug that we recently spotted on shopDisney has floated into Disney World merchandise shops! That’s right… Baby Yoda has boarded his floating pod just to join you for that first sip of coffee in the morning. (Even The Child needs a little PSL in his life, after all.) Baby Yoda Mug It’s a little bit difficult to tell from the pictures, but the Baby Yoda graphic is slightly raised from the mug, giving some dimension to the design. Baby Yoda Mug The back features the logo for The Mandalorian and gives another nod to THE CHILD. Baby Yoda Mug Did you know, by the way, that The Child’s pod is microwave and dishwasher safe ? Baby Yoda Mug We found this one at Celebrity 5 & 10 in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, so it’s likely available on the mug displays at major merchandise locations in the parks like Magic Kingdom’s Emporium and EPCOT’s Mouse Gear. We noticed it priced at $22.99, but this mug is currently listed at $19.99 on shopDisney, so that’s definitely worth mentioning. Click here to find the Baby Yoda mug on shopDisney! Baby Yoda and his pod are also ready to float into the holidays on this new ornament, and can transport all your goodies in this new Loungefly mini backpack. (That pod sure can come in handy, can’t it?) And stay tuned, Baby Yoda fans… because there’s bound to be more where this came from. (Like this. And this.) We hadn’t seen ANY new souvenir popcorn buckets since Disney World reopened — until today. Refilled Bucket We were in Hollywood Studios today checking out the glitz and glamor when we spotted something pretty interesting. The FIRST new souvenir popcorn bucket since Disney World reopened has arrived in the parks. And…well…we think it may have gotten a little lost on the way here. The Onward Popcorn Bucket is OFFICIALLY available in Hollywood Studios, and may we just say, Guinevere is looking VERY nice. Onward Popcorn Bucket This bucket design features the unicorn art from the film plastered on the side of Barley’s van. Oh, and those wheels? They actually spin! Onward Popcorn Bucket Overall, we think this little guy is super cute honestly. It certainly gets us in the mood for adventure! Onward Popcorn Bucket Our one problem is that it really doesn’t hold a lot of popcorn, but is “enough popcorn” even possible? Onward Popcorn Bucket The back has Barley’s tire cover and his super-cute bumper stickers in the windows. Onward Popcorn Bucket And in the front, you bet you can see Ian and Barley on their whirlwind adventure! P.S. Take note of the headlights. All grey right? Onward Popcorn Bucket Wrong! The headlights actually light-up! How cute is that? Onward Popcorn Bucket You can find the Onward Popcorn Bucket at Anaheim Produce in Hollywood Studios (an probably elsewhere!) for $18 with popcorn included! It certainly did take these two bros a looong time to make it to the parks — but better late than never! Let’s go on a quest! Many Disneyland Resort auditions have been canceled or suspended since the theme park closed in March. Black Panther Meet and Greet Walt Disney World reopened last month while Disneyland Resort has seen several delays in reopening. Despite this, Disneyland has continued with construction on the highly-anticipated Avengers Campus. We recently noticed a new audition post that indicates the theme parks could be preparing for some Marvel-themed entertainment! The first audition is for two stunt performers who will play Marvel’s Black Panther and Captain America. The second audition is for General Okoye from Black Panther. We know the new Avengers Campus will feature tons of meet ‘n’ greets with Marvel characters. Prior to the closures, we saw a few auditions for roles like Black Widow and Spider-Man. ©Disney The land was originally set to open in summer 2020 before the park closed. At this time, no reopening date is set for Disneyland or the new Avengers Campus. ©Disney The audition notice is simply indicating some exciting things are in the works! We’ve seen lots, and we mean LOTS of gorgeous new Minnie ears released lately. Emerald Minnie Ears But if your wallet is crying from all the new ears and new Halloween merch you bought recently, you may be looking to grab some Minnie ears at a discount. We found some ears that are a steal! Well…kinda. Haunted Mansion ears…$29.99. Haunted Mansion Macaron ears…$29.99. Macaron Minnie Ears Unicorn ears…$4.50?! Wait what? Yes, you read that right. We found a spot where you can get SIX(!!) pairs of Minnie ears for the typical price of one! So…what’s the catch? Well, they’re a bit…different. A special thank you to one of our team member’s aunts who found this stockpile of unofficial-but-also-somehow-official Minnie ears at HomeGoods in Pennsylvania. Minnie Mouse Ears at HomeGoods It looks like there are about 6 different designs with LOTS of sequins EVERYWHERE! They all have packaging that say “Disney Minnie Mouse Headband” with a cute little image of Minnie on them, and appear to be officially licensed Disney merchandise with a GIANT price difference compared to in-park ears. Minnie Mouse Ears at HomeGoods Peep those cute little unicorn ears at the very bottom! We’ll take 12 of them please. We must have them to match our new Minnie MagicBand. In all seriousness folks, these ears are $4.50 EACH. And they’re pretty cute! Are they the same as getting a fancy pair of Up ears? No. But will they do for $4.50 EACH?! You better believe it! Disney World diners, we’ve got some fun news! The Wave…of American Flavors Entrance Just last week Disney World launched a new Mobile Dine feature in the My Disney Experience app with the Walk-up Waitlist. This feature lets guests join a waitlist from their phones for select Disney World resort restaurants. Now, THREE more locations have been added to the feature — and they’re ALL in Disney’s Contemporary Resort! When we checked in on the list of available restaurants in the Walk-up Waitlist feature today, we spotted that California Grill, The Wave…of American Flavors, and Chef Mickey’s had all been added to the list! California Grill These newly added spots join Sanaa, Beaches and Cream Soda Shop, Topolino’s Terrace — Flavors of the Riviera, and Ale & Compass Restaurant. The app does note that some restaurants may offer walk-up dining without the app feature, so check with a Cast Member when in doubt. Chef Mickey’s We’ll be keeping a close eye on this new feature to announce new additions. So, stay tuned to DFB for the latest updates! Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has no shortage of great places to eat! And with Tambu Lounge officially reopened, guests now have even more options when choosing where to eat at the Poly. Capt. Cook’s But this trip, we’re scoping out Capt. Cook’s — the resort’s resident quick-service option. This spot offers up standard burgers, breakfast fare (we see you, Tonga Toast!), flatbreads, late-night snacks, and more — as well as more unique island-inspired dishes! We already swung (ok, more like RAN) by when we noticed that Pulled Pork Nachos were back on their menu! We wondered what other surprises would be in store for us this time… . Capt. Cook’s has been a reliable quick-service location for years. While we still miss the days of ALL YOU CAN FIT IN THE CUP Dole Whips at this location (we were known for some SERIOUSLY tall swirls in our day!), some classic favorites have stood the test of time. Best of all? Snack offerings and kitchen Before the closure, this was one of the few 24-hour locations on property (currently their hours are 7AM-10PM), and we expect those long hours to return someday! This meant guests could swing by any time day or night to refill their refillable resort mugs, order a quick bite, or eat enough of that Dole Whip to send them into a pineapple-induced dream-state right before bedtime! Atmosphere Much like the rest of the resort, Capt. Cook’s offers an island-themed escape from daily life. Just peek outside the windows and you’ll have a great view of the Polynesian’s Volcano Pool, especially the tiki-themed kids’ splash zone located just outside of Capt. Cook’s doors. Pool Area at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort There is ample seating inside and outside at this location. This is especially important, given that many of the tables are now unavailable to facilitate social distancing. Outdoor Seating Here’s a shot of inside of Capt. Cook’s before the closures. Imagine this, just a bit more spaced out. Capt. Cook’s Interior PRE-closure We, however, opted to bring our meal back to our room (a great perk for those staying at the Poly) to chow down! Ordering We used Mobile Order to choose our dishes and make our purchase before arriving. This contactless method of ordering food certainly makes dining easier in these days of #socialdistancing. Capt. Cook’s Mobile Order Sign This is the widely preferred method of ordering at quick-service locations around property, so be sure to have that phone ready to order before you arrive. You can pick your foods, place your order, pay, and, once you arrive, you’ll grab your food in no time! Eats Capt. Cook’s offers a varied menu! They have dishes that take inspiration from Polynesian flavors, but they also serve up loads of American staples. This makes it a great stop for broad and picky eaters, alike! (It’s a favorite for us after a long day at the parks. Chowing flatbread or Pulled Pork Nachos in your bed late at night is where it’s AT.) But keep in mind…this location has a VERY limited menu compared to what we’re used to seeing, so if you don’t spot a favorite, don’t panic — it may return with time! Capt. Cook Menu For today’s meal we stuck to the “Polynesian Favorites” and “Sides” portions of the menu. Side Dishes Menu First up for us was the Thai Coconut Meatballs for $9.49. These house-made, all-beef Chili-Garlic Meatballs are cooked in a Coconut Cream and served with White Rice. These have been on the menu for a while and are a reliably hearty and filling option. Thai Coconut Meatballs The meatballs were delicious. We especially enjoyed the creamy coconut flavor! If you’re heat averse, don’t let the idea of Thai meatballs scare you into thinking they could be spicy — these are incredibly mild. We received a heaping portion of steamed rice and three meatballs, but we would have preferred a LOT more of the sauce to go with it. The real reason to get these meatballs is that crazy good sauce, so we won’t judge if you lick the to-go box clean like we may or may not have done. Close up of Thai Coconut Meatballs For our side dish, we opted for the ol’ classic… Macaroni & Cheese! Macaroni & Cheese Don’t let the humble cup o’ mac deter you…this dish took us totally by surprise! It was SO tasty and quite creamy! And when we added a little hot sauce to it?? *Chef’s Kiss* We also found this to be a generous portion. If you’re not super hungry, this could serve as a small meal on its own. We totally recommend this side dish at $4.99! We’re always up for some Disney World mac and we’re happy to say this did NOT disappoint. Hankering for something sweet after your meal? While Dole Whip isn’t an option INSIDE Capt. Cook’s any longer, you can definitely get some of that Disney World staple at Pineapple Lanai just outside and around the corner. Pineapple Lanai Dole Whip And don’t forget that Capt. Cook’s often has yummy, themed cupcakes in its refrigerated section! Look for a Moana version that’s been around for quite some time now, or one of the Welcome Home Aloha cupcakes! Aloha Cupcake Nosh or Not Reasons to say “Aloha” (as in, “hello”) to Capt. Cook’s Are you staying at the Poly? If so, this place is a treat. VERY convenient. If not, it’s a great spot for breakfast on the way to Magic Kingdom. Do you have a mix of picky and adventuresome eaters? There’s a little something on this menu for (just about) everybody! Are you in a hurry? This a great option for quality food if you don’t have a ton of time or are eating a bit later in the evening. Reasons to say “Aloha” (as in, “goodbye”) to Capt. Cook’s Oh, you’re not staying at the Poly? Then this place is likely quite out of your way! Save yourself some time and eat somewhere more convenient. Got your heart set on a sit-down meal? Make sure you’re thinking about what you actually want out of your sit-down meal. If you’re looking to sit down, relax, and have a server bring you your food, this is not what you’re looking for. You don’t want to leave the parks? There are plenty of quick service and table service locations available in all four theme parks. If you’re trying to get in as many rides as possible, don’t leave the parks just to get a bite to eat. Overall We truly enjoyed our return to Capt. Cook’s. Our food was delicious and we were especially taken with our simple cup of Macaroni & Cheese (it’s a classic for a reason)! This is a nice little spot for guests staying at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. It is charmingly themed and offers unique dishes that fit right in with what we’ve come to expect from the Poly (seriously, the Pulled Pork Nachos are LIFE!). But despite the pared down menu, we were far from disappointed with this outing! We’re still anxiously awaiting word of when neighboring Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto will reopen so we have another excuse for some late-night bites at Capt. Cook’s. As if we needed an excuse! Have you eaten at Captain Cook’s before? Tell us about it in the comment section. Related posts: Review and Photos: The SPARKLIEST New Ice Cream Treat Is HERE in Disney World…And We’ve Got the Scoop! Today’s visual challenge is rather playful and will likely bring out the child in you. Can you guess the location of these “toys”? Scroll down to find the answer. If you guessed Andy’s Room aboard the Disney Magic, you are absolutely right! This multi-level youth space in Disney’s Oceaneer Club, brings the stars of the Disney-Pixar “Toy Story” film trilogy to life. Kids ages 3 to 12 experience the feeling of being toy-sized as they step into a larger-than-life version of Andy’s room and interact with his toys. Little cruisers can craft their own Mr. Potato Head creation and put larger-than-life sized coins in the “Toy Story” piggy bank, Hamm. Or they can climb the stairs to the top of Andy’s bed and take the super-fun Slinky Dog slide back down. Disney World looks pretty different than it did back when it opened in 1971. The Imagination Pavilion Over the years, Disney has added three more parks, two water parks, and a TON of new attractions. Still, the World as a whole doesn’t just look different — a few iconic attractions look pretty different too! We’re taking a look at some of the BIGGEST attraction renovations in Disney history! Do you remember the VERY different OG versions of these rides? Let’s find out! 1. Spaceship Earth Spaceship Earth is Epcot’s flagship attraction and structure, and it’s seen some serious changes over the years. Honestly, this is to be expected with the content of this attraction. Spaceship Earth is a journey through communication throughout history and into the future. As time has gone by and the future became the past, that journey has seen some changes. Spaceship Earth Spaceship Earth opened with Epcot in 1982 with a focus on “communication through the ages” and has seen three renovations, with one forthcoming. The first in 1986 won’t count on this list since it made for more minor changes — the addition of two future scenes showing computers used in everyday life and, most notably, replacing the original narrator, Vic Perrin, with famed TV anchor Walter Kronkite. All of the others, including the one that hasn’t happened yet, are pretty significant! 1994 Renovation From August to November 1994, Spaceship Earth closed for the first BIG renovation since it opened. Most of the changes occurred toward the end of the ride to get rid of some out-of-date scenes. By the 1990s, the computer in a bedroom scene didn’t seem all that futuristic. Instead, the ride received a scene showing two children communicating via video call. Spaceship Earth An entirely new orchestration was implemented for this renovation and, perhaps the most iconic of all, Jeremy Irons provided the new narration. You might recognize his voice from a particularly dastardly lion in The Lion King . The final scenes were redone as well with the removal of a space station scene, and the addition of new architectural dioramas to show electronic communication pathways. Going Up! Fun fact! The astronauts who were originally featured in the space station scene were featured in the post-show at Space Mountain until 2009! 2007 Renovation Some might remember that Spaceship Earth featured a big Mickey wand next to the building from 2000 to 2007 as a celebration of the new Millennium. Well, the removal of the wand actually accompanied another major renovation for the ride experience of this attraction. Spaceship Earth ROCKS! New scenes were added such as the Greek classroom, the mainframe computers, and the garage computer scene. Existing scenes saw some changes to costumes, lighting, and props. This also marked another new score and an updated narration by Dame Judi Dench. Of course, if you’ve ridden Spaceship Earth recently, you know this is still the version of the attraction we can ride today. Interactive touchscreens on Spaceship Earth Upcoming Renovation It does seem we have another major Spaceship Earth renovation on the horizon as a part of the Epcot Transformation. The ride is set to receive a new narrative and a new focus on storytelling and the human experience. The new version of the attraction is called Spaceship Earth: Our Shared Story. Transformation of Epcot ©Disney When the renovation is complete, we should be accompanied through the ride by a mystical story light. Whatever that is! Click here to learn more about the upcoming Spaceship Earth renovation! 2. Dumbo the Flying Elephant Dumbo the Flying Elephant is one of the most iconic Disney attractions. It’s been around since the opening day of Magic Kingdom and a version of it is featured in every single Disney park around the world. That’s some pretty crazy reach! In Magic Kingdom, this ride has received ONE major overhaul, and it’s a pretty big one! Two Dumbos! 2012 Renovation In the early 2010s, Disney World embarked on a massive renovation of Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom. New Fantasyland opened in 2012 with a slew of new rides and areas of the land, including a new area of Fantasyland where Mickey’s Toontown Fair used to be — now called Storybook Circus. Storybook Circus at Magic Kingdom Storybook Circus was the perfect theme to encompass Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and the attraction got a major makeover to help solidify its status as the centerpiece of the area. One of the biggest aspects of this renovation was that the ride was completely RELOCATED! The original Dumbo was located just past Prince Charming’s Regal Carrousel in Fantasyland, but the entire ride was transported down the “road” to its new and current home. Storybook Circus This renovation also added water features, a new soundtrack, and an entire SECOND copy of the original ride, doubling the rider capacity to help lighten the wait times on the high-demand ride. You might remember the iconic Timothy Mouse on the central hub of the ride, but you won’t spot that little guy in the center of either current iteration of the ride. Instead, you’ll see a new central hub with artwork panels from Dumbo. You CAN however spot Timothy over at the attraction’s sign. Fantasyland Dumbo Another MAJOR aspect of this renovation was the introduction of an indoor queue. Instead of a grueling wait in the heat, guests are now given a pager and sent into an air-conditioned play area themed after the circus act in the film. A playground for kids and an AC for the rest of us?! Sign us up! Want to learn about more air-conditioned queues and other ride hacks? Click here! 3. Haunted Mansion What’s the spookiest ride in Disney World? There are some good contenders, but none are as iconically spooky as Haunted Mansion. Haunted Mansion in Disney World has been around since 1971, but it hasn’t always had all of the scenes that we see nowadays. 2007 Renovation Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom has had a handful of little updates, but only two major renovations. The first was in 2007 and it was a biggie. Haunted Mansion The attraction received an update that featured a more elaborate transformation to the portrait in the entrance foyer, new audio and visual effects in the Stretching Room preshow, and an endless staircase scene right before the endless hallway scene. Hm…how M.C. Escher! This refurb was also when the original (and TBH WAY spookier!) faceless bride in the attic was replaced with the more animated Constance Hatchaway, who still resides there to this day. Madame Leota‘s ball began to levitate after this refurbishment as well — previously it was stationary on the table. 2011 Renovation The most recent major renovation to the Haunted Mansion came in 2011 with the addition of a new interactive queue through the outdoor graveyard of the manor. This is an addition that many love about the new ride. Sometimes, we’d even rather wait in line than get a FastPass (well…almost!). Haunted Mansion Graveyard The interactive elements in the queue include the following: a murder-mystery puzzle made of stone busts, an interactive tomb with musical instruments (and a cat!) that play music when touched, an over-flowing grave of an old Mariner, and a game with Prudence Pock the poetess where you can help Prudence’s spirit to complete her poems. Interactive Haunted Mansion Queue This renovation also introduced the interactive hitchhiking ghosts to the finale of the ride. Previously, the effect was what we can still see today in Disneyland — animatronics of the hitchhiking ghosts following along with your doom buggy through two-way mirrors! Now, the ghosts are digital and can interact with guests by swapping their heads and more! Want to learn more about Haunted Mansion? Click here! 4. Peter Pan’s Flight Technically, the actual ride part of Peter Pan’s Flight has remained largely unchanged since it opened. However, the queue got a pretty major overhaul — major enough to become a mini-attraction on its own and garner a spot on our list. 2014 Renovation Similar to Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan’s Flight also got a pretty awesome interactive queue. The space was VERY much needed as this attraction regularly boasts wait times of over an hour and the previously TINY switchback queue couldn’t keep up. Now guests get to wait in an indoor, air-conditioned queue with fun, interactive elements. Tinker Bell in Peter Pan’s Flight Queue The new queue opened in late 2014, but it wasn’t until early 2015 that guests were able to experience the interactive elements of the new line. The new queue starts by entering into a hallway filled with paintings of Neverland before routing guests into the Darling residence — past Nana’s doghouse, down the hallway, and into the nursery. In the nursery, there are more interactive elements such as a really high-tech shadow effect that allows guests to bat at butterflies and ring imaginary bells, and a tiny Tinker Bell flitting around the room causing mischief. Click here to learn more about Peter Pan’s Flight’s interactive queue! 5. Pirates of the Caribbean Perhaps some of Disney Wold’s most high-profile renovations have happened to Pirates of the Caribbean in Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland. There are many versions of Pirates of the Caribbean around the world, and all of them have had their fair share of modifications. For Magic Kingdom’s Pirates, there have been two big (and two small!) rounds of renovations. 1997 Renovations The Pirates of the Caribbean ride was certainly a relic of a different time, and that time came with some, shall we say, dated depictions. You probably know about the recent change to the auction scene (more on that in a minute!), but that wasn’t the first update to the attraction that helped to cast women in a better light. ©Disney Pirates of the Caribbean A minor change was made to one of the pillaging scenes back in 1997 that reframed an aspect of the story. Initially, the scene depicted several rounds of women being chased by pirates in and out of the homes. Ultimately, the scene was switched around so that the women are now chasing the pirates with rolling pins in hand. We have to say… the current version definitely gives us a laugh! 2006 Renovations Sure, the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise is massively successful, but we’d be remiss to forget that the ride actually came first. Now when you’re floating along the ride, you’ll notice characters from the film, but that wasn’t always the case! ©Disney Pirates of the Caribbean In 2006, the ride closed for a pretty big renovation to tie it into the then-newish 2003 hit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. When the ride reopened, it featured three scenes with new Jack Sparrow animatronics, a Captain Barbossa animatronic on the battling pirate ship, and more. The modifications also resulted in updates to the ride’s lighting, audio, dialogue, and effects, like the waterfall of mist guests traveled through until 2018. 2012 Renovations In 2012, the cave portion of the attraction received an overhaul as a tie-in to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. A cool underwater illuminated mermaid effect was added on the sides of the boats and a tied-up mermaid skeleton was added to the shore. This was SO COOL — while it lasted. The underwater effect proved troublesome to maintain and was so rarely operational that many didn’t notice when it was removed in 2018 along with the projected mist waterfall. 2017 Renovations Though this renovation wasn’t that big of a project, we have to mention the 2017 modifications to the ride because of how high-profile they were. We’re talking about the change of the iconic auction scene. Originally, the ride featured a scene where the pirates were auctioning off the town’s women, including a buxom young lass affectionately just known as “The Redhead.” Pirate Redd Now, the featured starlet of the “We wants the Redhead!” chant fame has been reborn as Redd the Pirate. Redd is now seen toting a gun and sporting some flashy pirate garb as she helps the auctioneer to sell off loot that was plundered from the townspeople. If you’ve been to Disney World pre-2012 AND post-2012, you know what we’re talking about. This just might be the most major renovation on the whole list! 2012 Renovation Initially, Test Track was sponsored by General Motors. The story was that guests were acting as the first human testers of new cars — supported by the various crash test videos and dummies in the queue. On the ride, you cruised through several vehicular tests including a bumpy ground test, extreme heat, extreme cold, and more before launching out to the outdoor section of the ride. But in 2012, that all changed. Test Track The shift came partially as a result of a switch in sponsorship from General Motors as a whole to just Chevrolet. Now, the queue takes guests through a series of futuristic Chevy models before they arrive in an interactive preshow where guests get to design their very own new SIM car for testing! Stations Where Guests Design Their Cars After that, guests board the same ride vehicles from the old version (with an updated paint job) and go through a series of tests. The story and track of the ride are similar, but much of the theming is different and the sponsorship feels more apparent (hello, it’s OnStar!). Now, the “tests” on the ride are centered on capability, efficiency, responsiveness, and power. No shock here, but power is that super speedy final bit. ©Disney The interactive part comes into play in that your design is scored in each of the four categories and ultimately summed up in a leaderboard in the post-show. At least, that’s what it’s supposed to do but sometimes the interactive portion has some technical difficulties and your car may never show up! Test Track closed for refurb earlier this year too! Learn more here! Honorable Mentions Now we DO have a few honorable mentions! These don’t make the list because their renovations TECHNICALLY turned them into whole new attractions. Still, we wanted to give a shoutout to the major changes going on with these ride stories. Journey Into Imagination with Figment You really thought we were going to do a whole article on major renovations without mentioning the history of the Imagination Pavilion in Epcot?! The original iteration of the ride in this Pavilion featured the lovable imaginary dragon, Figment — much as it does today — but it also featured the iconic Dreamfinder. Dreamfinder and Figment Photo Credit: D23 The ride told the story of how the Dreamfinder created Figment with his imagination, and the duo’s job of dreaming up ideas to take to the Dreamport in their blimp. You used to be able to spot portions of that “Dream Mobile” in EPCOT’s Mouse Gear before it closed for a massive refurbishment of its own! Hopefully this relic of EPCOT’s past makes an appearance again one day! This original iteration of this ride still has many fans in the present (including some of us here at DFB!). In 1999, the attraction was renovated to become Journey Into YOUR Imagination that paired with Honey, I Shrunk the Audience 4D show nearby in the Pavilion (which took over for Captain EO…but that’s a different post!). We won’t lie…people were not huge fans of this version. The ride path was shortened, there was no Dreamfinder, and there wasn’t nearly enough Figment. 2020 Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival Now, the attraction remains as it was remodeled in 2002. Journey into Imagination with Figment still doesn’t feature the Dreamfinder (we get Dr. Nigel Channing in his place), but it does feature Figment throughout the ride (although the originally whimsical Figment is now more of a nuisance than he is childlike!) as well as a TINY bit of the classic and super catchy “One Little Spark” song from the original ride. Check out more of EPCOT Center in the 80s HERE! Star Tours — The Adventures Continue Another attraction that was technically changed to a whole new ride is Star Tours. In 2010, this Star Wars ride was renamed and renovated to become Star Tours — The Adventures Continue. Initially, the ride featured a danger-riddled trip through the galaxy, guided by an R3X droid to one of the moons of Endor. Now, you can see your former pilot pumping out the tunes in Oga’s Cantina instead! Star Tours The new ride, Star Tours — The Adventures Continue, is essentially an updated version of the ride. There are many different scenes that you can encounter on your voyage through space — now guided by C-3PO instead of R3X. It added a higher-definition video, an updated ride system, a new screen, new effects, and new audio-animatronics. As sequels to the original Star Wars films were released, updated tie-in scenes were added to the ride as well! Click here to see why people are STILL talking about the Dreamfinder! See!? Some Disney World attractions have undergone some SERIOUS renovations! We certainly wonder what the future holds for these attractions and all the others. What sort of renovations will we be talking about 20 years from now?? Guess, we’ll just have to wait and see! Click here to see a BIG NEW project going on in Disney World RIGHT NOW!
