Following Walt Disney World’s lengthy closure due to the global health crisis, Disney Springs, Disney World’s shopping and dining district, started welcoming back guests in May. Many of the district’s restaurants reopened in May while others followed suit throughout the last three months. The Newly Reopened Edison Three more restaurants reopened, The Edison, Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante, and Enzo’s Hideaway, a couple weeks ago and we had a chance to check one out! We decided to pop into The Edison and see if anything’s changed since the closure. (Spoiler: A LOT has changed!) Step inside the steampunk speakeasy with us and see what it’s like now! Health and safety restrictions have been implemented at all Disney World restaurants. Menus have been pared back, tables are spaced out to allow for physical distancing, and business capacities are limited to reduce crowding. As such, we had a sneaking suspicion some of the entertainment would be altered and the food would be limited at The Edison. It also should be noted that The Edison is currently only open for dinner. Prior to closing, it was also open for lunch. Let’s see what we found… . Atmosphere The limited menu is displayed outside the restaurant and accessible from the restaurant’s website. Appetizers and entrees have been cut way back, like many other Disney restaurants. Limited menus are put in place to assist the reduced and/or social distancing kitchen staff as well as potential production shortages. And for now, the famous DB ‘Clothesline Candied Bacon’ beckoned us to venture inside. The Edison Menu Highlights Outside, you’ll see physical distance markers on the ground leading to the entrance. These are meant to allow for space between guests while you wait to be checked-in. There wasn’t much of a line when we visited, but this could change once things start to pick up. We suggest you arrive at the restaurant about 15 minutes early to give yourself plenty of time if there are any lines. Physical Distance Markers Outside The Edison The iconic steampunk-inspired clock welcomes you to the restaurant. It immediately gives you a feel for the gothic-industrial vibe you’ll see in other elements of The Edison. The Edison Clock The restaurant is designed to resemble a 1920s electric company with futuristic steampunk aesthetics. You’ll see this inspiration all around the restaurant in the furniture, funky decor, bars, and structures. Short video clips from the 20s are projected on the walls for your entertainment! The Edison Stairway The check-in line had plexiglass barriers in place. These have been implemented all over Disney World to create a protective barrier between guests and employees. We visited The Edison the day after it opened on a Friday night. Even with limited capacity, the restaurant was considerably empty. Usually, the entertainment draws large weekend crowds. We didn’t have to wait long to get checked-in. Again, this may change as things ramp up! The Edison Check-In The upstairs bar was closed while we visited. This could be because the crowds were lower than normal. We’ve seen this bar be unavailable during slow nights. Upstairs Bar The downstairs bar located in front of the stage was also closed. There was a sign that told us the bar seating was temporarily unavailable at that time. There are tables placed immediately in front of the bar so it is likely this area was closed to avoid guests from crowding others while they are eating. Downstairs Bar The main downstairs bar was open with available seating. This is where the bartenders were mixing cocktails for guests. Every few seats were blocked off to create distance between guests. Main Downstairs Bar Even the hand sanitizer is themed correctly! Sazerac (yes, like the drink Sazerac) liquor company responsible for spirits like Southern Comfort began producing their own hand sanitizer from their distillery. The Edison cleverly chose the Sazerac Hand Sanitizer to accompany their prohibition-era theme. Sazerac Hand Sanitizer The cozy corners filled with cushy leather couches are still available for seating! Guests can choose to cuddle up on the couches while they enjoy their meals and cocktails. The comfy seating is located at the back of the restaurant near the restrooms. Comfy Lounge Seating By the way, the “secret” passageway that connects The Edison to Enzo’s Hideaway was open too! You can find the discrete door by the restrooms. The Edison Co-Ed Restroom Sink with Social Distance Markers The service was most excellent! Our server was extremely knowledgable and answered any questions we had about the food, cocktails, beer, and entertainment. He came back frequently to check on us even when the crowd picked up a bit. Also, the waitstaff is currently required to wear masks and face shields while serving guests. Most Disney Servers are only required to wear masks. Get a closer look at the detailed atmospheric elements from our first Edison review in 2018! Entertainment Prior to closing, The Edison boasted a HUGE cabaret that started at 10PM every night. The show consisted of a full live band that accompanied dancers and solo singers throughout the night. Aerialists would perform their act suspended from the ceiling in silks and hoops. Stilt walkers would roam the restaurant, dancers would interact with the guests, and steampunk-clad inventors would do sleight-of-hand tricks. It was more of a sultry burlesque show than a variety show. In essence, it was very unique to anything else on Disney World property. Aerial Performer at The Edison Prior to Closing We went back to The Edison this time knowing that entertainment would be considerably different. This assumption was mostly due to the Actors’ Equity Association disagreement. The entertainment union took a while to reach an agreement with the theme parks. In doing so, many live performances have been on hiatus until Disney decides to bring them back. The second reason behind our prediction is the fact that the stage space is confined and doesn’t allow for a lot of social distancing. Audience interaction would be out of the question too! The Edison Stage Our predictions were mostly correct. The nightly cabaret is currently not running. Our server explained to us that the full cabaret show will “most likely not be available for a long time.” He did note that live music still plays every night, and consists of a soloist or trio. While visiting on Friday, we enjoyed watching a soloist play the piano and sing some soothing popular tunes. We’ll continue to watch for entertainment options at The Edison now that Disney has reached an agreement with the Actor’s union. The Edison Soloist While it wasn’t the full show, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. It might not have been an exciting night of singing, dancing, and aerialists, but we were happy to have some live entertainment. Given the lack of performers around Disney World, it was nice to hear the talents of a local musician. Check out some pictures from The Edison entertainment prior to closing! Eats As we noted before, some big cuts were made to the menu. You can currently view the old menu on disneyworld.com. The new menu is on posted the restaurant’s website and is significantly smaller. Most notably, the deviled eggs and Edison Wings are missing from the appetizers while three of the five salads were missing. Limited Menu ©The Edison Many of the sandwiches, including the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and Mahi Wrap, were unavailable as well. Limited Menu ©The Edison A few crowd-favorite desserts and entrees made the cut! The popular Edison Burger and Lollipop Tree with bubble gum whipped cream are still available. The Edison Burger is so nice, we reviewed it twice! Limited Menu ©The Edison We opted for the Anchor Steam Beer Battered Fish & Chips and the Samantha Sterling cocktail (which we’ve had as a punch bowl as well!). But to start, we couldn’t resist that luxurious DB ‘Clothesline Candied Bacon’! The thick-cut bacon is coated with maple syrup and black peppercorn. The appetizer comes with four strips of bacon, a side of fruit mostarda dipping sauce, and spicy dill pickles. The price is $16. DB ‘Clothesline Candied Bacon’ This is one of the most popular dishes at The Edison, and we’ve enjoyed it several times before — despite the kind of rip-off price (which is even MORE of a rip-off now since you’ll pay $4 more for it than we did when the restaurant first opened). The meat has a definite heft to it, especially with the thick and sweet coating. Which, by the way, wasn’t too sweet, and the peppercorn balanced the sweetness well. Both elements worked together to create a good balance of sweet and salty. As far as texture, know that it’s closer to jerky than a crispy piece of bacon. The candied maple syrup makes it a little tough to eat. That’s especially true once the bacon has cooled down and the syrup hardens a bit. All that said…we wish it came with more than 4 strips for two reasons: 1) it’s really yummy, and 2) then it might be more justifiable for the price! DB ‘Clothesline Candied Bacon’ The Fruit Mostarda is a mix of fruit purée and grain mustard. Again, it wasn’t overly sweet and also had a bit of a kick to it. The mostarda tastes close to a jam, but with a purée texture. The grain mustard flavor was hardly noticeable at all and acted as a neutralizer for the sweetness of the fruit. It was a nice compliment to the bacon. Let’s move on to the sweet and spicy pickles, which will be a HUGE surprise if you haven’t had this dish before. We were expecting a regular sweet pickle, but hot dang! They were spicy, sweet, and delish! The server said they are soaked with red pepper flakes, which is what gives them a bit of heat. We wish the appetizer came with more than three pickles! Fruit Mostarda and Sweet & Spicy Pickles To cool down that heat, The Samantha Sterling is $16 and mixed with Grey Goose Vodka, Lillet Rose, lime juice, watermelon juice, and cinnamon cordial. Last time we ordered this it was served to us in a literal PUNCH BOWL as part of their sharable drink options; and we were excited to try it this time, you know, in a normal human-sized glass. This cocktail is a great choice for those of us who like our drinks a little sweet but don’t want them to taste like sugary syrup. It had a light sweetness that was balanced with a hint of lime. We couldn’t really taste the watermelon or Lillet Rose, but we imagine that’s why the drink is so pink and a little fruity. The element that really came through was the cinnamon cordial. That hint of cinnamon really made the cocktail taste fantastic! Samantha Sterling Cocktail Finally! The main course. The Anchor Steam Beer Battered Fish & Chips cost $23 and came with a side of tartar sauce and a lemon wedge. Fish and Chips fans won’t be disappointed when it comes to this entree, but that said, most of the taste came from the breading. The outside of the breading had a thick and crispy texture. The inside was moist and almost doughy. It was exactly what we expected when it comes to fish n’ chips. Anchor Steam Beer Battered Fish & Chips The fish is a battered cod fillet. It wasn’t overcooked and it didn’t have an overly “fishy” taste. The cod had a nice flake to it too. But here’s where it gets a little rough. There definitely could have been more fish inside the breading! And eventually, the grease from the breading seeped into the fish and onto the fries. By the end of the meal, the fish was falling apart because it was practically soaked in grease. If you don’t love greasy food, we suggest trying another entree. The Edison Burger is a good standby and tends to be our go-to choice here. Inside the Cod Fillet The house-made fries were seasoned and crispy, but nothing super unique. They were a standard french fry you might find at any restaurant. But honestly, a standard french fry is all we really needed for this dish. We didn’t feel like we were missing anything when it came to the fries! This was hearty, enjoyable fish. Does it beat our long-time favorite fish and chips over at nearby Raglan Road Irish Pub or Cookes of Dublin? Nah, probably not, but it’s still a decent fish and chips option. Nosh or Not You might want to dine at The Edison if: You’re looking for live music. Sure, the entertainment has been reduced, but you can still enjoy the musicians. Take in the sweet sounds of a piano soloist or musical trio! You’re looking for a swanky night out. The dark and moody vibe is the perfect atmosphere to dress like a character from The Great Gatsby. It’s a great place for a Friday night cocktail! You’re looking for a unique atmosphere. This restaurant has a super cool steampunk/industrial/gothic theme. The beauty is in the details everywhere you look! You might want to skip The Edison if: You’re looking for a full dinner show. The live music is nice, but it’s hardly comparable to the full show it used to be. Raglan Road is currently showing their Irish dancers accompanied by a live band if you’re looking for something a little more substantial. You’re looking for something fancy. The food is good and the atmosphere is super neat, but you can find fancier (and more expensive) dining options at Disney Springs. You’re looking for a child-friendly atmosphere. We find that the prohibition-era theming is more adult-centric. Plus, there are, like, three bars here. It’s definitely marketed for adults! Still, there are plenty of food options for kids (CHEESECAKE LOLLIPOP TREE) and they will most likely enjoy themselves. Overall Every Disney World restaurant has been affected by the current health and safety protocols. The Edison has been considerably affected because a lot of its popularity was due to the entertainment. People flocked to the restaurant to watch the dancers, aerialists, and musicians do their thing. Once 10PM hit, there was never a dull moment. The lack of performers put a bit of a damper on the experience. This, of course, is no fault of the restaurant. Given the circumstances, they did their best to make up for the lack of performances. If you’ve never been to The Edison, then you will most likely enjoy yourself. If you’ve only visited for lunch or dinner (i.e. without the big show), then you will get the same general vibe. If you’re looking to experience the restaurant and entertainment as it was prior to closure, you might feel disappointed. We suggest going into it with the notion that things changed to fit the current safety requirements for the staff, guests, and performers. All that aside, we really enjoyed our evening at The Edison. The service was quick and attentive. The candied bacon was on point and the cocktails are still some of the best on property. Plus, the ultra-cool ambiance is really where it’s at! We sat in a cozy corner, watched some of the “talkies” projected on the wall, and listened to a talented pianist sing us some classics. The place oozes with a hip vibe that is hard to compare to any other Disney Springs restaurant. Strike that. The vibe is hard to compare to any restaurant at Disney World! It’s a solid Disney Springs choice and we’ll happily come back to The Edison in the future. We’ll be curious if/when the full entertainment lineup will return to The Edison. We will keep you updated when we learn more information about this in the future. In the meantime, we’ll take another Samantha Sterling, please! Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has quickly become a fan-favorite in Walt Disney World. Rise of the Resistance It has also become one of the more difficult attractions to get onto. If you’re lucky enough to get on the ride in Disney’s Hollywood Studios sometime soon, be on the lookout for an extra special surprise. We’ve stared in awe at the ridiculously impressive group of stormtroopers in the Star Destroyer’s Hangar Bay in one part of Rise of the Resistance, but today we got an a bonus stormtrooper encounter. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Close the blast doors! We actually found ourselves face to face with some LIVE stormtroopers walking near a ride vehicle today. We were just thankful that they didn’t ask to see our identification. Live Stormtroopers in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Then again, stormtroopers don’t tend to have the best aim sometimes. But still, we wouldn’t want to take our chances. We had to make sure we could help our friends in the Resistance! Live Stormtroopers in Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance We thought it was nearly impossible for this attraction to get any more immersive than it already was, but we were wrong. Having the live stormtroopers there added another layer to the story and definitely made us feel like we were living out a true Star Wars adventure. We aren’t sure if they’ll be there more often in the future, but we’ll definitely keep an eye out for them the next time we get the chance to ride. Well, we found em and we hopped on our brooms as fast as we could, flew home, and cooked them up. And…well, they didn’t disappoint, especially if you love peanut butter and chocolate! The Hocus Pocus cookies are made by Nestle Toll House and the pack makes 20 break and bake cookies. Hocus Pocus Cookies These are oatmeal peanut butter cookies topped with chocolate morsels and candy-coated gems. The little gems are inspired by our three favorite witches — Sarah, Winifred, and Mary. Hocus Pocus You’ll need to preheat your oven to 325ºF and bake your cookie babies for 13-15 minutes. Hocus Pocus Cookies After anxiously waiting while singing I Put A Spell On You, we pulled ours out of the oven and tried em out. They end up being pretty tiny (like most pre-cut cookies) once baked. Hocus Pocus Cookies After letting them cool for a bit, it was FINALLY time to try our cookies out! Hocus Pocus Cookies Overall, they are VERY peanut buttery. The oatmeal is there but more for texture than flavor. And as you can see, they’re pretty chocolaty. We really liked them, but if you’re looking for more of an oatmeal cookie flavor, then you may wanna pass. Hocus Pocus Cookies We found these at our local Kroger for $2.79. We will be on the lookout for these at more locations and if you find them elsewhere, please let us know! Check out some of the NEW Hocus Pocus merchandise on Disney’s website here! Obviously, we get excited about new Disney movies, particularly new animated features because that’s what so many of us were raised on. Unfortunately, 2020 hasn’t been kind to the movie industry, with many upcoming movies getting delayed. ©Disney One of those delayed films is Raya and the Last Dragon, which was originally supposed to release this fall. Instead, Disney pushed its release date back to March 12, 2021. Hopefully, the waiting will be worth it, and in the meantime, at least that gives us plenty of time to learn more about the movie. Raya and the Last Dragon is about a warrior named Raya who is seeking out the last dragon, which already sounds pretty epic. Even more awesome is that the movie is the first Disney film to take inspiration from Southeast Asian cultures! Raya and the Last Dragon First Look ©Walt Disney Animation Studios Although details about the movie have been slim to none, we finally have a first look at Raya and the Last Dragon, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. And look at how beautiful that image is! Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi ©Disney/Lucasfilm Even more exciting is that we now know that Raya is voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, who we loved as Rose Tico in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Tran will be the first Southeast Asian actress to lead a Disney film — isn’t that amazing? This movie is a series of firsts for Disney, and we are here for it! So although Raya and the Last Dragon did get delayed until next year, we’re pretty sure it will totally be worth the wait. We can’t wait to learn more about it in the months to come. Feeling down? Here are 11 Disney Movies Sure To Cheer You Up! Are you as excited as we are about Raya and the Last Dragon? Let us know in the comments. It’s D23’s anniversary! And they’re celebrating in a big way! Rey and Chewbacca We’ve already checked out all the ways that D23 is celebrating this big anniversary, but now we’re taking a closer look at some exciting Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge information that we’ve heard during the festivities! Thanks to the Inside Disney podcast, we know a little bit more about merchandise, easter eggs, and more from Disney’s Batuu! Let’s check it out! The team at the Inside Disney podcast sat down with Scott Trowbridge, a portfolio creative executive with Walt Disney Imagineering, who has been working hard to develop to the world of Galaxy’s Edge over the past few years. Baby Yoda!! Trowbridge started off by telling us a little bit about how easter eggs work in Galaxy’s Edge. Since the world is so immersive and involved with other Star Wars materials, they can pre-plant easter eggs for things that aren’t even out yet. A good example of this is located in Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. When Galaxy’s Edge first opened, Dok Ondar’s had a helmet and pulse rifle on the shelf that didn’t draw too much attention. When The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+, those easter eggs became a LOT more mainstream — because it was Mando’s stuff! Trowbridge noted that’s not the only easter egg in Galaxy’s Edge that is for something upcoming, too. He noted that we should keep an eye out for things that become important in more Star Wars stories down the road. Oooh! Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run Queue Then the conversation turned to merchandise. Let’s just say, we’ll be apologizing to our wallets in advance. Trowbridge noted that merch is so important because it lets guests take a piece of their experience in Batuu home with them and it can even help folks to create their OWN Star Wars stories. Trowbridge was able to announce several upcoming books that will have Target-exclusive editions to go with the Galaxy’s Edge Trading Post that launches in Target stores this Sunday. One is Star Wars: Myths and Fables, a collection of in-universe fairytales, and the other is Star Wars: Dark Legends, a collection of spooky tales and ghost stories. Both books will have a target edition with three new stories inside. There’s also an upcoming Batuu-based children’s book called Elee & Me! Rise of the Resistance These books will be offered in the new Galaxy’s Edge Trading Post in Target stores alongside other items like the Galaxy’s Edge Cookbook, a Target-exclusive Chewbacca Hooded Blanket, and MORE! We can’t wait to check out some of the merch at our local stores! All in all, we’re pretty excited to check out all of the new merch coming to Target and to keep our eyes peeled in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for any easter eggs we might have missed! Click here to learn everything you need to know about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge! What are you most excited about with the upcoming Galaxy’s Edge merchandise? Tell us in the comments! If you’ve been following along, you know that the reopening of Walt Disney World Resort is taking place in phases. And even though all four Walt Disney World theme parks started to welcome guests again in July, that does not mean that every attraction, experience, eatery, and store in the parks reopened immediately. Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom In fact, we have a whole list of restaurants that we put together so you can know which ones are currently open in the parks and which ones remain closed. But it seems as though we might be able to move one favorite counter service spot in Magic Kingdom from “Closed” to “Open” on that list soon… With MANY thanks to DFB Reader Blake B. (who very kindly shared the following photo with us), it appears that Gaston’s Tavern might be opening its doors to guests soon! Cast Members outside of Gaston’s Tavern Though this spot has not yet reopened to guests, cast members were coming and going in the area just outside the Tavern and appeared to be measuring lines to mark for physical distancing (which is one of the current measures implemented around the Resort for the safety of guests and cast members). Could this mean that Gaston will be serving up Warm Cinnamon Rolls and LeFou’s Brew again soon?! Cinnamon Roll at Gaston’s Tavern (Of course, Gaston assumes we’re swooning over him… when we’re actually swooning over extra icing on our Cinnamon Roll!) Gaston in Magic Kingdom Only time will tell. (Well, Gaston will probably be bragging about it, too, whenever it reopens. ) And you can bet we’ll be filling you in (and grabbing a Cinnamon Roll) when it does as well! In the meantime, you can check out the full list of all the restaurants that are currently open and closed in Walt Disney World here. What is your favorite thing to eat or drink at Gaston’s Tavern? You’ll soak in the aura of autumn with Main Street, U.S.A. dressed in fall décor and other seasonal offerings. Of course, Halloween is THE fall holiday, and there will be some bewitching surprises this year, including a special Halloween-themed cavalcade with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and pals wearing their favorite Halloween costumes. You may even spot those rascally chipmunks, Chip ‘n’ Dale, in costume over in Frontierland, and look for other Disney character friends dressed up and riding the horse-drawn trolley down Main Street, U.S.A. And speaking of costumes, get yours ready! To bring some Halloween party fun into the park this year, for the first time guests of all ages can wear your funniest, Disney-ist, most creative costumes during Magic Kingdom Park regular operating hours from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31. As an important reminder, costume masks are not permitted for adults; only children younger than 14 years old are permitted to wear costume masks. In addition, all guests are required to wear approved face coverings during their visit. Before you arrive, check our Know Before You Go page and Costume Guidelines. As you can see in these new photos, our cast members are prepping pumpkin-themed wreaths that will adorn lampposts up and down Main Street, U.S.A., putting you in the fall spirit almost as soon as you step foot inside the park. Autumn at Walt Disney World Resort wouldn’t be complete without our popular fall treats, such as the famous Pumpkin-spiced Waffle Sundae at Magic Kingdom Park. Visit our official Foodie Guide to Fall Treats at Walt Disney World: Parks Edition, which features all of the yummy details. Festive Halloween-themed merchandise will be available in select locations around the park. Featured items include a new spirit jersey, Loungefly backpack and candy-swirl Minnie Mouse headband, along with a selection of apparel inspired by Disney Villains and more. A new feature suddenly (or, since this is Disney we’re talking about, perhaps we should say magically) appeared on the My Disney Experience app for Walt Disney World guests recently: Mobile Dine Walk-up Waitlist! Sanaa in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge This feature allows guests to find out with a tap on their phone which Table Service restaurants have available seating for walk-up guests. (You can see how it works here.) And the list of restaurants in Walt Disney World that offer this new feature just keeps growing… and growing! We’ve been keeping you posted each day as we find more restaurants, but we also thought we’d put together a handy list for you of all the restaurants currently offering the Walk-Up Waitlist. (This list includes the three spots newly added this morning.) Whispering Canyon Cafe in Disney’s Wilderness Lodge These are all of the Table Service restaurants currently offering the Mobile Dine Walk-Up Waitlist feature. Grand Floridian Cafe In order to dine in a Disney World theme park Table Service restaurant during this reopening phase, guests must have a required Park Pass Reservation and an Advance Dining Reservation. And a friendly reminder: some restaurants may have space to accept walk-ins, even if they are not on the app’s Walk-up Waitlist, so it’s always a good idea to check with a cast member if you’d like to dine in a Table Service restaurant, but are without an Advance Dining Reservation. Click here to learn all about this new feature on the My Disney Experience app! We’ve been getting our walking shoes ready and keeping an eye on what has always appeared to be a walkway connecting Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa to Magic Kingdom. Construction Progress as of August 14 Now we’ve got some official confirmation of what this walkway will be. The bridge, which would presumptively serve as part of the walking path from the Grand Floridian to Magic Kingdom, looked very close to completion the last time we flew past it on the monorail. Construction Progress as of August 14 Today, as we walked near the front of Magic Kingdom, we spotted a sign that has confirmed what we have long presumed. New signage now points us to the “Grand Floridian Walkway.” Grand Floridian Walkway Sign While Disney has not made any official announcements regarding the bridge, this new sign serves as a pretty strong confirmation that soon guests will be able to stroll from the Grand right over to Space Mountain. Grand Floridian Walkway Sign We also spotted some construction today near the monorail station. There’s no official confirmation yet of what the purpose of this area will be exactly, but it does look like the structures to hold some tents have been built. Construction While no official opening date has been set for the walkway, we’ll certainly keep our eyes open for any news from Disney and for more construction updates.
