  8. Earlier this year, it was announced that Splash Mountain in both Disney World and Disneyland would be re-themed to a Princess and the Frog attraction. Splash Mountain Funko POP! Figurines Since that announcement, we’ve seen Splash Mountain merchandise flying off the shelves in Disney World (although some was recently restocked). Now, it seems some references to Splash Mountain have disappeared over at Disneyland. One of our favorite things to do is to listen to the background music played in Disneyland and Disney World. Recently, the background music loop that is played in Downtown Disney and the esplanade between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park was changed! Disneyland Gate According to The Orange County Register, Disneyland removed the song “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” from the music loop. As reported by The OCR, Disneyland officials noted that the song’s removal from the background music “is part of a continuous process to deliver an environment that features stories that are relevant and inclusive.” Splash Mountain in Disneyland The OCR also noted that references to Song of the South have been stripped from Disneyland’s Splash Mountain website. It appears the website used to note that the ride was a “delightful log flume ride featuring characters and songs from the classic Disney film ‘Song of the South’.” In fact, the description of the website on Google still appears to include this. Screenshot from Google But, if you visit the website itself, references to Song of the South do not appear. Instead, part of the website reads “Drop into a whimsical world filled with classic characters and songs on this thrilling log-flume adventure.” Splash Mountain in Disneyland It appears a similar change was made to the Disney World website for this attraction as well. While the Google search still displays the reference to Song of the South… Screenshot from Google …the website itself does not reference the movie. Both websites do, however, note that you can sing along to songs like “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” while enjoying this attraction. Splash Mountain Entrance We’ll keep an eye out for any more changes around the parks or online relating to Splash Mountain, and let you know what we find! 9. Several NBA teams have voted to boycott the remainder of the season in Disney World. ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex The NBA was one of the major leaders when it came to the return of sports in the US. Now, after a successful season restart, some teams have expressed an interest in boycotting the rest of the season in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin. As of this morning, three games have been postponed and the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers have cast votes in favor of boycotting the remainder of the season. The discussions of a boycott first began when the Milwaukee Bucks staged a walk-out of Game 5 against the Orlando Magic yesterday. Afterward, the Bucks made a statement that their protest was in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake and several other teams opted not to play as well — the Rockets, the Thunder, the Lakers, and the Trail Blazers. This is a developing story. Stay tuned to DFB in the coming days for all of the latest updates about the NBA in Disney World. Click here to learn more about the postponement of the NBA games. 10. If you’re visiting Disney World in the summer or during hurricane season (which is…basically half of the year!), you can expect frequent if not DAILY rainfall to come your way. Some of these storms can be a quick sprinkle while others are torrential downpours! Rainy day at Toy Story Land When these storms roll through the parks, a lot of guests may be inclined to throw social distancing out the window in favor of quickly seeking shelter. Ever seen gaggles of guests huddled under awnings or in gift shop doorways during a storm? It’s not so simple to avoid the storms in a reopened Disney World nowadays! Now many of you don’t mind a little rain, and take advantage of the (slightly) cooler weather to ride even more rides! But for those of you who want to avoid get too drenched in Disney World, here’s what YOU can do to maintain social distancing during a downpour. Be prepared BEFORE it starts raining. There are a few important steps you can take well before the first raindrop hits the ground that will set you and your travel party up to remain as dry as possible. Rainy Day Cavalcade First, you’ll want to have a reliable weather app (we like AccuWeather) and check the radar throughout the day. It’s tricky to time exactly when it will rain during the day, but AccuWeather gives you the ability to see to the minute when the rain is expected to start. Having an “eye on the sky” so to speak will give you a general sense of where the rain is in proximity to where you are. Trust us, we’ve had many a day where we checked the weather before heading out to see ZERO percent chance of rain only to get a little ding on our phone that rain is expected at our location. Sure enough, minutes later a tiny little raincloud often pops up! A rainy day in EPCOT Next, familiarize yourself with the layout of the park and know where you can find ample coverage! Make sure you grab a park map and perhaps ask a Cast Member in the morning what are good spots to duck into when it rains. For instance, in Magic Kingdom, three areas with lots of covered space include Tomorrowland Terrace (which just so happens to also be a mask-free Relaxation Station!), Tortuga Tavern, and the area surrounding Casey’s Corner on Main Street, U.S.A.. Rain, rain, go away! Knowing what indoor attractions are nearby can also buy your party some time when the rain starts to fall. Keep a list of the longer indoor rides or shows, like Hall of Presidents, Country Bear Jamboree, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, or The Haunted Mansion. That way, not only are you avoiding the rain, but you’re also checking some attractions off of your “to-do” list! Country Bear Jamboree The Land Pavilion as well as the Living Seas Pavilion are both great places to seek shelter at EPCOT. If you’re caught in World Showcase, catch a show like the American Adventure, Impressions de France, or Canada Far and Wide. The American Adventure In Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney Presents and Muppet Vision 3D will take up a decent amount of time while you wait for a brief rainstorm to pass. Finally, in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, It’s Tough to Be a Bug is a good place to hide, and, when the shows return, both Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo the Musical are located in indoor theaters. Learn more about how this year’s hurricane season may be one of the most active ones yet! Have rain gear packed with you ahead of time! We always recommend you stock up on several of those WAY cheaper ponchos BEFORE you leave home! Please don’t waste your money on Disney’s ponchos if you don’t have to! Unless you’re itching to have a souvenir Disney Parks poncho, $11+ is lot of money to shell out per person for a big sheet of plastic. Ponchos and Umbrellas Available! This poncho tip is even more valuable now! Guests will more than likely dash to the closest shop to a) stay dry, and b) buy some ponchos because they didn’t come prepared! You can avoid the possible crowds in the shops by packing your rain gear with you. You can get a multi-pack on Amazon for less than the cost of ONE poncho in Disney World. © Amazon One set of ponchos will be more than enough to keep yourself covered throughout your Disney World vacation. This 5-pack on Amazon retails for $9.98. Shop for the 5-pack of adult ponchos here! Don’t forget about your stroller! We’ve been there TOO many times where we’ve bid farewell to our stroller to head onto a ride or into a restaurant with blue skies and sun shining — only to return to a sopping wet mess because a surprise rainstorm decided to make an appearance while we were away! Make sure you have a rain cover for your stroller and have it ready to go…even when you don’t think you need it! Believe me, you don’t want a wet, grumpy toddler for the rest of the day. © Amazon This rain cover that we found on Amazon has nearly 2,000 reviews, will fit most single stroller sizes, and retails for $19.88! Your kiddo will thank you when they’re older. Shop for this stroller rain cover by clicking here! Don’t dash to the first dry place you see. So, you’ve familiarized yourself with the park layout, you stocked up on rain gear, and you’re keeping an eye on your weather app. Next thing you know, the sky opens up and it starts to rain! Oh no! It’s raining in the Magic Kingdom! Don’t panic, and don’t run! It’s JUST water, guys. It won’t burn holes in your skin if it touches you like you may be led to believe by the look of some guests peeling out to seek shelter at the first drip of moisture. It’s just water, so keep calm. Panicking about the rain may cause your party to dash to the first dry place you see, which could be a smaller gift shop or entranceway that is suddenly overrun with guests. You’ll be smart enough to NOT be one of these people! Be willing to walk through the storm for a minute or two to find a safe space to wait the storm out. If you’re prepared with solid rain gear, this will be a much less burdensome process that will keep your party relatively dry. Rain! Are you close to one of those larger, longer indoor attractions? Now may be a good time to hop inside! Walk around your immediate area to see what your options are. Or, if you want to truly embrace the “don’t let a cloud rain on my parade” spirit do like we do — toss that poncho on and keep on enjoying your day! It will be cooler out, there will be FAR fewer people around, and you get a fun, unique experience viewing the parks in the rain. How does Disney World stay prepared in the event of an emergency? Find out here! Consider a midday break in your resort room. Ok, so stomping around in rain puddles may not be for everyone. Another option is a trickier one to time perfectly but you might be able to avoid the rain in the park entirely if you head back to your resort room in the afternoon for an hour or two. Your room is probably the easiest place to socially distance yourself from others in general! BoardWalk Inn Storms tend to hit Orlando mid to late afternoon, so plan to arrive closer to the start of the day. That way, by the time the afternoon rolls around, you’ll be ready for a short break (and possibly avoid those afternoon showers!). Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Taking a break in the afternoon also gives you a chance to rest and remove your masks for an extended period of time. When is the best time to arrive at the theme parks these days? It might not be rope drop! But here’s the bright side of an extended downpour! Most days between the months of June and September have daily rain showers, some of which can be pretty heavy. These storms, however, are usually quick to pass through without any major disruptions to your day. Some days, however, can be complete washouts. No matter what time of year you visit, be prepared for these rainy days, as they can happen at any time! Magic Kingdom On the days that DO become total washouts, the parks will be even more empty than they already are these days. The downpours can work in your favor as they’ll lower the crowd levels in the parks overall. Empty Hollywood Studios on a rainy day If you want to be troopers and take advantage of these rainy days, make sure you pack extra face masks in your park bag. You’ll want to swap them out for new, dry masks if the one you’re wearing becomes wet! Fortune favors the bold here so if you’re down with heading out in the rain, it can often feel like you have the parks all to yourself! Click here for more tips on visiting Disney World during hurricane season! It’s hard to avoid any rain in Disney World, especially in the summer months. But taking some time ahead of your visit to plan what to do in the event of a rainstorm can help you avoid coming into close contact with others! 12. Health officials are shocked by an abrupt turnaround in the CDC’s guidelines for COVID-19 testing. And Disney Chairman Bob Iger is “horrified” by the change. Walt Disney Company Chairman Bob Iger The United States Centers for Disease Control changed their testing policy to note that asymptomatic people may not need to be tested, even if they’ve come into contact with an infected individual. ABC reports that health experts are surprised by this decision and are pushing back on the CDC’s guidelines, maintaining that asymptomatic young people are a significant vector for passing the virus to others at this time. Magic Kingdom Disney Chairman Bob Iger personally weighed in on twitter last night with his thoughts on the updated CDC recommendations. Walt Disney World has maintained strict health and safety protocol during their phased reopening, beginning in May with Disney Springs and select hotels, and continuing in July with all four theme parks. The company has also opened a COVID-19 testing facility on property, and come to an agreement with the Actor’s Equity Association providing testing for actors in exchange for their return to work in Disney World. 16. Upon reopening, Disney World implemented a policy that requires face masks for all Cast Members and guests age two and older. Tie-dye Mickey Face Mask Guests are only permitted to remove their masks while visiting one of the designated relaxation zones, or while eating or drinking in a stationary, distanced location. As reported by The Orlando Sentinel, a Disney World guest struck an EPCOT security guard when he was reminded to abide by the park’s mask rules. According to an Orange County sheriff’s report, this incident is the first known crime report involving such a confrontation at Disney World. Spaceship Earth The guest, Enrico Toro, is accused of hitting the security guard in the head and threatening his life, which led to his arrest on the charge of misdemeanor battery on August 14th. Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said in a statement, “We expect guests to treat our Cast Members with courtesy and respect, and while the vast majority of guests have adapted to our new measures, this unfortunate case required law enforcement.” Epcot World Showcase In the arrest report, Toro said the security guard swore at him and they had an argument, but denied anything else happened. The report indicated that three witnesses who observed the altercation said Toro became “irate,” used profanity, and hit the guard. According to Orange County spokeswoman Despina McLaughlan, officials aren’t aware of any other violent incidents stemming from people refusing to wear masks in the county. According to the Orange County Mayor, face masks are likely to be required for the “foreseeable future” in Disney World. Related posts: 10 Things That Are BANNED From Disney World! 18. Oh, EPCOT, you ever-changing place! Spaceship Earth We’re in EPCOT often to check out the latest construction, and it really does feel like there are updates every time we visit! But today, we found some updates from behind-the-scenes. This is construction you probably WON’T see on your EPCOT day, but it sure is exciting nonetheless! Let’s take a look at some BIG EPCOT building permits! As you’ve probably heard, EPCOT is in the midst of a transformation, which includes a major overhaul of many areas. We found THREE (count ’em, THREE) new building permits directly related to the EPCOT transformation and we’re pretty pumped to show you! Harmonious Progress First up, we saw a permit for the address that’s coded to the Marina Entertainment space that helps to house the nighttime spectaculars that take place on World Showcase Lagoon. The permit description is vague and it’s filed with Disney’s internal construction company — but there IS something interesting about this info! Harmonious Permit The permit notes that it’s for “Project K” which has been the name used to refer to work on Harmonious in the past. OOOH! Looks like the “Below Deck” of a barge is getting some work done — possibly in anticipation for the upcoming show. Crew in World Showcase Lagoon We’ve seen some crews out on barges on World Showcase Lagoon recently too! Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more about these new fireworks soon. Click here to learn EVERYTHING we know so far about Harmonious! Innoventions East Construction Next up, we spotted a permit (filed today) for “Project G” which is the overarching name that has been used for LOTS of EPCOT transformation stuff. We’re not sure WHAT they’re doing — since it’s filed with Disney’s internal company and very vague information — but we do know WHERE the work is. Innoventions East Permit The address on the permit is for Innoventions East, Suite B. Innoventions East is the building that used to house Mouse Gear and Electric Umbrella, but Suite B was on the other side of those two locations. Mysterious! Mouse Gear We’re certainly interested in how this area will play into the coming World Celebration. We’ll keep you updated! Click here to learn more about World Celebration! Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Updates Over at the address coded to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (formerly the Energy Pavilion), there has been a lot going on. We’ve spotted work in the parks recently AND there’s apparently a new support structure going up inside too. The newest permit might not be the most exciting, but progress is progress! Guardians Permit On August 11th, Walt Disney Imagineering filed a permit for a “Reuse Irrigation Line” at the coaster building. This is actually way cooler than it sounds because it will make the ride building more eco-friendly. This line will help take wastewater and make it reusable! Roof construction on Cosmic Rewind It’s cool to see that Disney is installing more eco-friendly measures within their structures! Click here to see another recent Guardians of the Galaxy permit! All in all, the EPCOT transformation just keeps moving forward. We can’t wait to see the finished product of these projects. 21. We recently shared a review about Wine Bar George and how it’s practically perfect. Wine Bar George Bar Seating Well, now the restaurant in Disney Springs has just added four more reasons for why you should give the spot a try. While our DFB reader @tkub1218 was wining and dining at Wine Bar George (and hopefully eating some Flaming Cheese), he spotted not one…but FOUR new drinks on the menu! Although we can’t resist a Froscato or Freaujolais, each of the latest sips sounds worth ALL the hype. The Bright Side is shaken up with Luna Azul Blanco Tequila, Lemon, Yellow Chartreuse, Honey, and Grapefruit for $15... Bright Side …while the Bitter Thistle is a simple cocktail made of Cynar and Lime for $15. Bitter Thistle You can also try your hand at the Lucky 13! The cocktail is mixed with Ron Zacapa Rum, Orange Curaçao, Lime, Green Chartreuse, Absinthe, and Roederer Estate Sparkling Wine for $15 (which sounds AMAZING). Lucky 13 If you’re visiting the restaurant with your family or friends, you can share a pot of Tea for Two during the afternoon. The drink is made with Earl Grey infused Pimm’s Cup No. 1, Italicus, Punt e Mes, and Yellow Chartreuse for $40, which sounds like quite the way to chill out in Disney Springs. Tea for Two While Wine Bar George has some great sips and snacks, there are also plenty of other great spots to grab a bite after a drink or two (like The Edison, even though there has been A LOT of menu changes at the restaurant). As we continue exploring Disney Springs and the rest of Disney World, we’ll give you a look at all the drinks, food, and more we find around the parks! 22. While Disney World has now welcomed back guests, Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii currently remains closed. Aulani Resort Earlier this month, Hawaii Governor David Ige extended the state’s 14-day quarantine requirement for out-of-state visitors until October 1st. And with the case numbers in Hawaii on the rise, this could point to a further extension of restrictions — and a potentially lengthy closure for Aulani. According to The New York Times, Hawaii is now emerging as one of the nation’s COVID-19 hotspots. Hawaiian Sunset from Aulani While the geographic isolation of Hawaii combined with the state’s mitigation efforts helped to suppress the number of cases for several months, the case numbers in the state have now risen rapidly. In fact, Hawaii now ranks among the states where new cases have grown the fastest in the past 14 days. Disney’s Aulani Resort A reopening date for Aulani has not yet been announced, but we will continue to keep an eye out for more updates, so stay tuned! We spotted some Aulani merchandise available for sale online… Check it out! Do you have an upcoming trip to Aulani planned? Let us know in the comments. 23. While the Disney Parks around the world have started to reopen to guests, Disney Cruise Line has remained closed as a health and safety precaution. ©Disney Since the CDC has extended cruise line’s closures through September (and could continue to extend the date), Disney hasn’t set plans for departures until Fall 2021. While this is the current situation, officials at Port Canaveral are looking to the future. Port Canaveral has gathered a budget plan for 2021. This plan states that there will be no cruises from the port until at least January 2021. And at that time, they predict that only “four ships would be sailing at 50% capacity — one ship each.” The port is home to five brands, though, including Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises. Which brands would be sailing is unclear at this time. Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream The Port Authority voting won’t take place until September, but the proposed 50% sailing restriction would last through the fiscal year starting October 1st, 2020, and ending September 30th, 2021. However, more ships would be allowed per cruise to set sail each quarter. While the Port Authority hopes that cruising may begin again before January, it really relies on when they get the OK from the CDC. ©Port Canaveral There have been major budget cuts during this time, and the only major project happening through 2021 will be the construction on Disney Cruise’s Cruise Terminal 8. The $25.5 million funds needed for the revamp were set aside and approved back in February. The recent Port Authority meeting states that they expect to make substantial completion on the terminal by April 16th, 2021. ©Port Canaveral As the Port Authority and CDC continue to make decisions based on the health and safety of employees and passengers, we’ll keep you updated on the Disney Cruise Line’s closure. 25. It’s a strange new world we’re living in, and the Florida theme parks are ready to reflect and look forward. Disney World Today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis held a roundtable with representatives from several major central Florida theme parks to talk about their reopenings and the coming months. In attendance were representatives from Universal, Toothsome, Sea World, and Disney — and the discussion gave us an inside look at how the reopening is playing out in the Disney parks. Cast Members Back to Work The meeting started out with a discussion of the number of Florida employees who have been able to return to work due to the reopening of the theme parks. According to DeSantis, 90% of full-time employees have returned to the Orlando theme parks at this point. Magic Kingdom For Disney World specifically, they have contributed to that percentage by bringing back tens of thousands of Cast Members, and they’re working to recall even more. While this is something they seem to be striving for, this process is a slow one as Disney has been notifying furloughed workers that they may remain out of work for a bit longer. The group agreed that the safety precautions have helped to keep guests safe and the fact that parks are open at all goes a long way when it comes to making employees and locals feel better during such trying times. Spaceship Earth When DeSantis noted that it must have been difficult to stop operations, Disney World Senior Vice President Jim MacPhee confirmed the sentiment. He noted that it was hard to pause without knowing how long they would be closed, but now he can’t be prouder of the Cast Members who have returned. In his words, the culture is focused on “creating magical moments,” and Cast Members are a major piece of that. Click here to read the latest furlough update. Health and Safety Measures MacPhee and Hollywood Studios Vice President Jackie Swisher both spoke on the more optimistic sides of reopening, including how health and safety have been a major priority in the Disney parks. MacPhee noted that in the six weeks since reopening, they’ve been very proud of how Cast Members and guests alike have adjusted. Tree of Life With the Asian parks reopening first, Disney had a unique opportunity to learn from these experiences to institute focuses on capacity, health and wellness, and ensuring the parks are a safe environment for Cast Members and guests. In short, MacPhee noted that they want to make sure the industry is leading when it comes to safety. Swisher echoed many of these sentiments calling back to the company’s work with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Travel Association to craft the protocols we’re seeing in the parks today. It apparently took a large team and body of effort to come up with the new protocols. The goal was to get to the right approach — not just what to do, but why they’re doing it. Hollywood Studios The training of the Cast Members plays a huge part, she noted, as does keeping guests informed such as with the “Know Before You Go” campaign featuring the Incredibles. For Disney, the Cast Members have been the center of the safety approach and the greatest tool in making people feel comfortable. Swisher and MacPhee agree, “The magic is definitely back.” Is Disney still magical? Click here for our thoughts. Limited Capacity and Attendance That brings us to perhaps the most interesting part of the conversation. The discussion turned to talk a little bit about what capacities and attendance are looking like in the various theme parks right now. On the topic of capacity restrictions, DeSantis did note that he’s open to the idea of the various theme parks increasing capacity. Train Station Disney explained that they are seeing decently long stays and that they are ultimately pleased with the mix of locals and out of state. As we know from the Q3 Earnings Call, fewer out-of-state guests are visiting the parks than were initially expected. Click here to learn about WHO is going to Disney World right now! Supporting Orlando and Florida Ultimately the conversation turned back towards how the theme parks have been a credit to the economies in Orlando and Florida as a whole during this trying time. Disney’s Senior Manager of Supplier Diversity and Sustainability, Leonard Spencer, spoke some on how Disney World’s reopening has been able to support small businesses in the community. Magic Kingdom Spencer noted that his team has sought out opportunities with small businesses to provide Disney with construction, operations help, and providing services to guests. He added that the NBA has connected with local restaurants to give them business. Overall, he said, the role played by Disney and small businesses together helps to “create magic and authentic experiences” and enrich the community. Disney World The representatives from Disney also noted that most of the Disney parks have reopened around the world; they’re only still waiting on regulations in California to lift for the reopening of Disneyland. As always, stay tuned to DFB for the latest news about capacity changes, park reopenings, and more! Looking for tips for traveling to Disney World right now? Click here!
