  6. As we’ve made our way around Disney World this week, we’ve found a LOT of cool new Disney merchandise. World of Disney Halloween Merchandise From new slap bracelet MagicBands to new Haunted Mansion merchandise, and of course TONS of Halloween items, we’ll just say our wallets are looking very slim right now! But what sold out the fastest this week? Some of them may surprise you! Item 1 This comes in a set to spice up your life, but if you’ve already become a spirit, you’ll still find it quite nice. Can you guess what it is? With Halloween just 70 days away, it seems the spirits from the Haunted Mansion have been heavily recruiting new ghost hosts. We’ve seen everything from Haunted Mansion dresses to a Haunted Mansion spirit jersey. Quite a few Haunted Mansion items have sold out really quickly, but then have been swiftly restocked in the parks, like the bat stanchion tray (still sold out on shopDisney) and a Madame Leota towel. Bat Tray! One item that we’ve really seen flying off the shelves though is The Haunted Mansion Tombstone Salt and Pepper Set. It has been nearly impossible to find in the parks! We can’t blame people for snatching these up though, they’re pretty amazing. Just imagine seasoning a nice, warm fall stew with these, as you watch the leaves falling outside your window and listen to the Haunted Mansion soundtrack playing in the background. Perfection. Haunted Mansion Salt and Pepper Shakers We’re hoping more of these show up soon. We’re just dying to have them! Click here to check out more Haunted Mansion merchandise we’ve spotted in Disney World! Item 2 Sweets are good, but they melt away. Carry your park essentials in this and you can enjoy treats all day. Do you know what this is? Halloween shopping is in full force! We’re talking dog costumes, shirts, and even some Halloween items on sale! We’ve seen some items sell out, like the Mickey Pumpkin Pillow, but have seen those be restocked pretty quickly (although it’s still sold out online). Mickey Pumpkin Pillow But this one item has been particularly difficult to find at World of Disney in Disney Springs — the Disney Halloween Snacks Loungefly. We found this new bag for $75.00 at World of Disney in Disney Springs earlier this week, but since then, it has been playing quite the game of hide-and-seek with us. Disney Halloween Snacks Loungefly Disney Springs seems to sell out of these really quickly, but we’ve seen this sweet and spooky bag appear over in some of the parks. If you’ve got to have one, be sure to stop by the parks and see if you can find it! Click here to check out some fun Halloween costumes we found in the parks and online! Item 3 This helps you enter the parks until it’s time to go. It’s from a movie you may have never seen, from several years ago. Can you guess what this is? Think you’ve seen every Disney animated movie out there? How about The Black Cauldron? Even of the most dedicated Disney fans may not have seen this film from 1985. If you’ve already finished watching all of your favorites on Disney+, then you can definitely check out The Black Cauldron next! But if you’re looking for The Black Cauldron merchandise, you may be out of luck! We spotted this MagicBand featuring the characters from the movie earlier this week. The Black Cauldron MagicBand But, we haven’t really seen it since! The Black Cauldron MagicBand It seems this MagicBand may have disappeared for the moment! We’ll definitely let you know if we see any more pop up in the future! Click here to check out some a limited edition Black Widow MagicBand we found! Item 4 Back to the Mansion we go, to see where we’ve been. With this wearable item, you’re sure to blend in. Do you know what it is? How much Haunted Mansion merchandise is too much? The limit does not exist. The Haunted Mansion wallpaper Crocs have been flying fast! They’re currently sold out on shopDisney but have been disappearing and reappearing in different spots around Disney World. Haunted Mansion Crocs If you really want to become one with the Mansion wallpaper, though, you’ll definitely need this Haunted Mansion Button-Down Shirt. We spotted this beauty earlier this week, but during one of our last visits to World of Disney in Disney Springs, but it has since departed that spot. It’s also sold out on shopDisney, which makes this one an especially tough one to find. Haunted Mansion Button-Down Shirt We can definitely understand the hype though. Just imagine if you paired this with the Crocs and covered your wall in Haunted Mansion wallpaper and blended right into it. Our applications to be ghost number 1000 are already in and a picture of us in this shirt is going on the very front! Item 5 You’ll need a hook or some kind of tree, but we’re certain you’ll scream over these. Do you know what they are? It’s really been an intense time for Haunted Mansion fans! We’ve seen items like the new Haunted Mansion Loungefly bags literally fly off the shelves, and we’ve had a tough time finding the Haunted Mansion throw blanket in World of Disney after we saw it there earlier (although we also spotted it at Memento Mori in Magic Kingdom). Haunted Mansion Loungefly Bags But, one unique item that sold out quickly was the Haunted Mansion Glow-in-the-Dark Ornament Set. We spotted it earlier this week, but soon after were told by a Cast Member that they had sold out. We love how the Happy Haunts are so beautifully detailed. We may just have to put up a Halloween tree just to display these! Haunted Mansion Ornament Set These are currently sold out on shopDisney. The Cast Member in Disney Springs told us that more would be coming soon, so hopefully, they’re already back in stock or will be before too long! We’re always on the lookout for the latest and greatest in Disney merchandise, so we’ll definitely let you know what we find! And while items sometimes sell out, we tend to see them restocked pretty quickly, especially when their in this high of demand. Is your favorite item sold out? What item are you having a hard time finding? Let us know!! Looking for more cool merch? Check out this fantastic Haunted Mansion shirt we found! Which of these popular items is your favorite? Chat with us about it in the comments below! Related posts: Look Alive! A Ton of New Haunted Mansion Merchandise Has Arrived in Disney World and Online! 17. During Disney’s latest quarterly earnings call, it was revealed that HALF of the total attendance at Disney World right now consists of locals. And it’s probably a safe assumption that a LOT of those locals coming to the parks are Annual Passholders. Annual Passholder Sticker For Disney World, 50% is HIGH for Annual Passholder attendance on any given day. So if the demand is clearly there for Annual Passholders to be a part of Disney’s phased reopening, it would make sense for Disney to welcome even MORE Passholders into the fold. But to this day, Annual Passes are still not for sale. So, why aren’t Annual Passes for sale when such a high percentage of guests coming to Disney World these days fall into that category? Let’s break down the possible reasons. Disney World wants to manage the percentage of Passholders visiting As we mentioned, if we’re assuming a majority of the locals visiting (as well as out-of-staters) account for Passholders taking up 50% of their daily attendance, it’s safe to assume that’s probably higher than what even Disney was expecting. EPCOT It’s possible Disney does not want to resume the sale of Annual Passes quite yet because they want to manage the number of Passholders visiting. If existing Passholders are already taking up 50%, imagine what the percentages could potentially be if they started selling more Passes! Magic Kingdom AP preview entrance crowds So, until park capacity is raised or the Park Pass Reservation System goes away, we may continue to see a pause on the sale of Annual Passes. With Disney recently offering Passholders the option to cancel their passes, Disney may be trying to place some sort of control over the volume of Passholders at this time. Read more about Disney allowing Passholders to cancel their Annual Passes here! Disney World may be showing a preference to higher revenue guests While Passholders are among Disney’s most loyal customers, they aren’t necessarily the most profitable. During that quarterly earnings call where we learned about Passholders accounting for nearly 50% of daily attendance, Dsiney CEO Bob Chapek commented on how a single day guest spends more than an Annual Passholder. This makes sense — if you visit more often, you’re less likely to shell out as much cash per day on souvenirs, pricey sit-down meals, and more as someone who rarely visits. California Grill It’s probably safe to say that Disney is looking for ways to bring in more revenue post-closures. They may stand to earn LESS per guest if those guests are predominantly Annual Passholders than if there were more Single Ticket Guests or Resort Guests. Sure, they’ll make some initial money off of the sale of the Pass, but Disney stands to earn WAY more if they can make those would-be Passholders remain single day ticket holders and resort guests. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Annual Passholder MagicBand Regular Ticket Guests are more likely to be staying at the resorts as well as spending more money on food and souvenirs. And resort guests are a captive audience who are essentially living on Disney property for several days and dependent on all Disney has to offer, rather than Annual Passholders who may just be visiting for a couple of hours. Combined with the discounts Passholders can get on rooms, merchandise, and potentially on food, an out-of-town hotel guest is likely spending more than a typical Annual Passholder across the board. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort A hotel guest staying at a Deluxe Resort, like Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa or Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, could add more revenue to Disney World’s pockets in one night of resort fees than a local Annual Passholder will in an entire year from the purchase of their Annual Pass (depending on what pass they have). Passholders may not be the source of steady income that Disney can find in a “normal” ticket holder. Just HOW many people canceled their Annual Passes? We asked our readers! Disney World is still “figuring it out as they go” Since Disney World’s unprecedented closures began back in March, it seems as though they’ve operated on a “figure it out as we go” model. There have been some bizarre glitches to indicate that they haven’t quite nailed everything down, like when they charged Passholders 4 months worth of fees at once. Or the multiple times the Disney World phone lines and website basically died due to the number of guests trying to get assistance. Walt Disney World Annual Passholder It’s very possible that Disney simply hasn’t figured everything out yet when it comes to what to do with their Annual Passholders, and until they do, they’re pausing sales. Magic Kingdom It’s arguably tougher being a Passholder right now than it was before the closures. With the Disney Park Pass Reservation System in place, there’s FAR less availability to visit the parks at a moment’s notice. In addition, there’s simply less to do in the parks at this time, with no fireworks, no parades, no character meet and greets, fewer places to eat and shop, and shorter park hours. Annual Passholder Availability for August. EPCOT was the only park available as of August 10. More availability was later added. © Disney With Passholders unable to visit as easily and experience everything they initially purchased their passes expecting, there’s a serious question of whether the value paid for Passes is still the value they hold. Disney may still be in the process of determining their next steps forward in taking care of their Annual Passholders. Click here to learn more about what we heard at Disney’s latest quarterly earnings call. We will surely see Disney World resume the sale of Annual Passes someday, perhaps sooner rather than later! Disney has remained rather tight-lipped on the sale of Annual Passes so until they reveal more, we’ll all be waiting to see what happens. This prolonged pause on the sale of Passes, however, is rather unprecedented and is yet another example of just how significant the closures have been to Disney World. 20. We’ve been following along with the release of a NEW dining feature in Disney World this week. Topolino’s Terrace Dining Room A few days ago, we noticed that the new Mobile Dine Walk-up Waitlist feature was available on the My Disney Experience app — but it didn’t last long. A few hours after its launch, the feature had disappeared. Well, this morning, the Walk-up Waitlist is BACK! Let’s take a look! To access the Walk-up Waitlist, you need to select the “Now” button under “Search by Time” when checking for dining availability. Yesterday, there was no now button, but today the feature has returned with walk-up locations listed. Walk-up Waitlist When the feature initially launched, you could check lists at Sanaa, Topolino’s Terrace, Kona Cafe, and Whispering Canyon Cafe. This morning, only Sanaa and Topolino’s Terrace were available. Keep in mind that some restaurants may have walk-up availability even if they do not have the mobile capability! So, when in doubt, check with a Cast Member. Walk-up Waitlist We’ll be keeping an eye out to see if this feature sticks around this time and to see if Disney adds any more dining locations. As always, stay tuned to DFB for the latest updates! Click here to learn more about the new Mobile Dine Walk-up Waitlist! Are you excited to use the Mobile Dine Walk-up Waitlist? 21. If you grew up in a Disney-loving family during the 80s and 90s, you probably remember things being a bit different than they are now at Disney World! The Earffel Tower at Disney MGM Studios; Photo Credit: Disney Parks Blog There are a few memories that are burned into our brains! We don’t know why we can’t seem to forget them! Let’s see if you do, too… . Take a trip back in time with us and see if you remember some of our favorite things from growing up at Disney World too! The Yellow Sea Of Ponchos Every time it rained in Disney World (which seems to happen A LOT), the gift shops would bust out their displays of bright yellow Mickey rain ponchos, and it felt like everyone in the park would buy one! Vintage Yellow Ponchos Photo; Credit Werner Weiss ©Yesterland.com We’re talking men, women, and even small children! They were big sheets of vinyl with an enormous logo of Mickey on the back. (This was before the days of Amazon when a lot of people bought cheaper rain ponchos online and brought them to the parks.) In 2003 Disney World switched over to a clear poncho which is much less harsh on the eyes, but call us nostalgic — we seem to prefer the vibrant yellow ones better! Check out our list of 9 important things you won’t find in Disney World here! Butter Was Mickey-Shaped Everywhere Believe it or not, you can STILL find Mickey Butter at some spots in Disney World (like this beautiful bounty of Mickey-shaped butter pads that came with our room service at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge!). But alas, Mickey Butter is a rare creature these days! Mickey Butter If you were lucky enough to visit Disney World during the Mickey Butter glory days, you’ll remember this stuff was everywhere! In fact, it was one of the things we were the most excited about seeing on every trip. We even remember having the old “D” in the Walt Disney World logo…as butter. Shaped butter just TASTED better, right?! Garden Grill Restaurant at EPCOT (back when it was known as The Land Grille Room) even had MICKEY SHAPED BUTTER STATUES! We don’t know what Disney’s strange obsession with butter was but we fully support it returning! Typhoon Lagoon Doubloons Typhoon Lagoon opened on June 1, 1989, at Disney World and quickly became the unofficial water park capital of all the cool kids. We remember these giant souvenir coins came with our kids’ meal, folded in a small paper envelope! Typhoon Lagoon Doubloon Photo Credit: Worthpoint.com The token was made of plastic and read “Typhoon Lagoon Doubloon” on both sides. It had absolutely no purpose or cash value (what, you gave us a giant gold coin that we can’t spend on anything?!?), but since we’ve held onto this thing all these years, we’re pretty happy it’s still around! You Could Meet the Dreamfinder and Figment Back when Disney’s rarest characters used to roam the Earth (and before Journey Into Imagination’s refurb) there was the Dreamfinder — a magical man with a luscious crop of red hair and a beard to match — and you could MEET him! Dreamfinder and Figment Photo Credit: D23 And while, later, a much bigger costumed Figment was introduced, the original Figment was just a wee lad in an itty bitty sweater toted around by the gloved and tuxedoed Dreamfinder. Don’t even get us started with the rest of the amazing stuff you could see and do at EPCOT back in the day (fly around blood cells in Body Wars, sniff oranges in Horizons, sing with fruit at Kitchen Kabaret, bust a move with Captain EO…the list goes on and on). The place was absolutely bananas…and PERFECT. Candy Came in WAY Cooler Packaging Long before Goofy’s Candy Co., Disney World packaged its candy in souvenir tins and acrylics cases. Some were shaped like Disney characters while others were beautifully illustrated with colorful designs. Each one was like a work of art! Vintage Candy Tin Photo Credit: Worthpoint.com Our favorite cases were these simple square acrylic boxes that were usually filled with Runts or Tart n Tinys or M&Ms. The confectioneries and gift shops had STACKS of them. Old Disney World Candy Box! Now Disney packages its candy in disposable plastic bags and tubs — how we long for them to bring back this art form! (Huge thanks to Carl S. for sending us this pic to spark our imaginations and remember our must-have souvenirs from the 80s! Maybe our obsession with these was the seed of Disney Food Blog!) Fine, But I Still Call It MGM Studios! Perhaps the biggest change from our past is Disney’s Hollywood Studios (which doesn’t even have the same name anymore). MGM Studios (as it was formerly called) opened on May 1st, 1989, and was the third park at Disney World. This park was super RAD even before Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge! It had a giant Mickey-shaped water tower, a Honey I Shrunk the Kids: Movie Set Adventure playground, and even a Studio Backlot Tour with a sound stage, tram, and walking tour! Earffel Tower The idea behind MGM Studios started as a movie-themed pavilion at EPCOT. But the project grew and grew, eventually expanding into its own unique theme park concept! Learn more about Hollywood Studios (which just celebrated its 31st anniversary) HERE! Backlot Tour A 1985 licensing agreement between Disney and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio gave Disney the right to use “MGM” for the name and logo. And originally, Disney planned on using the theme park as an actual movie production studio. Ernest Saves Christmas was filmed at MGM Studios before the park opened to the public, and that began the downfall of the name MGM before guests had even stepped foot inside. Disney Studio Backlot Tour MGM filed a lawsuit against Disney in 1988 (BEFORE the park was even open to the public) stating movie-making was in violation of their contract with Disney…even though that was kind of the whole point of the park in the first place. The case was settled in 1992 and Disney was allowed to keep using the MGM brand for its park. They did that until January 7, 2008, when the name was changed to Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Disney’s Hollywood Studios Actually, now that we’ve had a chance to reflect back on this stuff, we think we know why we cling to these memories. They’re rather small details through the eyes of an adult, but in the imagination of a child, Mickey Butter, meeting the Dreamfinder, and seeing rows and rows of neatly stacked candies in shiny clear acrylic boxes is a dream come true! We wonder what stuff our kids are noticing that they’ll be remembering many years from now! We look forward to finding out. What do you remember from your vacations to Disney World growing up? 22. Gorillas have always held a special place in my heart, so I’ve been deeply touched by the award-winning book “The One and Only Ivan,” which tells the true story of Ivan, a 400-pound silverback gorilla who was raised by humans for the first 27 years of his life in a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall. While there were several other animals there, such as Stella the elephant and Bob the dog, there were no other gorillas. Ivan did not know what it was like to be a part of a gorilla family until he moved to Zoo Atlanta, a fellow Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited institution that oversaw giving him the best possible care. “The One and Only Ivan” has been adapted for the screen and will premiere August 21, streaming exclusively on Disney+. Studying animals, like Zawadi, at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail allowed filmmakers to observe gorillas’ behaviors, study physical characteristics and the lush environment. You may see some familiar sights from Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in the film, as the park served as an inspiration to the filmmakers. Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, with its lush greenery, was used as a model for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Filmmakers also spent time studying the behaviors of our western lowland gorilla troops, learning about their family dynamics and observing how they forage for food, play with one another, and sleep. We are very fortunate to have an exceptionally dedicated team of animal care experts who invest a lot of time in building trust with these gorillas, and all the 5,000+ animals in our care, which allows us to work closely with them. By observing troop dynamics of the western lowland gorillas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, like Kashata and her infant, Grace, filmmakers were able to weave in elements of reality into the film.In fact, our work with gorillas goes far beyond caring for the troops at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, through the Disney Conservation Fund, we support the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE), the world’s only sanctuary for orphaned Grauer’s gorillas, a critically endangered species. GRACE provides the sort of storybook ending that Ivan dreams about in the movie. Rescued gorillas join an adoptive gorilla family and get to live together in spacious natural forest enclosures. Our animal care team members provide resources and share their expertise with staff at GRACE, which has been imperative in saving the lives of gorillas and helping ensure they thrive. The Disney Conservation Fund has enabled these rescued Grauer’s gorillas to live as a family in their natural home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.I’m very proud of the work our teams have done to support “The One and Only Ivan” and their dedication to ensuring gorillas are well cared for each and every day. I encourage you to watch this heartwarming story on Disney+, and be sure to check out our free downloadable activity packet with all you need to know about the care and conservation of these wonderful animals.
