  1. The cool thing about visiting Disney World is that when you get a snack craving, you can get a pretty good snack just about anywhere on property. Good’s Food To Go Now, of course, we have our favorite snack spots with some of our favorite snacks in the parks, but even Disney World hotels offer a variety of good snacks, including Mickey pretzels. Now, we just found a Mickey pretzel at Disney’s Old Key West Resort in a new spot, along with a new caramel brownie. So let’s go check both of those snacks out to see what’s what! We’re heading over to Good’s Foods To Go, the counter service restaurant at Old Key West. The Mickey-shaped Pretzel with Cheese Sauce has officially arrived here, so OF COURSE, we had to check it out. For $7.99, you get a Mickey Pretzel with the pre-packaged plastic cheese (oh, yeah). Mickey pretzel We’re happy to report this is a classic Mickey pretzel, just like what you get in the parks. Pro tip: getting it early is the best way to get a nice and fresh pretzel. It’s fluffy on the inside with a nice crispiness on the outside, plus it looks like fun. Is it the best pretzel in Disney World? Well, no, but it still satisfies. The plastic cheese pairs so well with it, too (probably because the pretzel is a little dry). Plastic Cheese! We also decided to pick up a new sweet treat, the Caramel Brownie, for $5.29. It’s a standard brownie base on the bottom, but it’s got caramel on top. This is a fairly dense brownie, and although it was a touch dry, it was still very tasty. It was more of a cake brownie vs. a fudgey brownie, and well, we prefer the latter. But this one is still a solid choice. Caramel brownie The caramel on top is sticky and creamy, but it doesn’t get stuck in your teeth. It’s got a nice consistency, and it adds a nice light caramel flavor to the dessert. We would eat this again, but we don’t think we’d travel all the way to Old Key West Resort for it. A layer of caramel on top So that’s how we felt about these new snacks in Disney World. It’s got that iconic Mickey jack-o’-lantern front and center, surrounded by sunflowers, faux leaves, and cute little gourds. Oh, and it lights up. Like a glowing “hi there” for every trick-or-treater who rolls up. There’s a rope for hanging and an on/off switch to keep things low-maintenance. 3. A NEW Disney board game is almost here — and we got a chance to try it out! New Disney Villains game! When you miss being in the Disney parks, it’s understandable to turn to the nearest object to get your Disney fix somewhere else. Luckily, we’ve found games like Disney Villainous and Disney Lorcana to keep us busy. If you’ve already had hours of fun playing either of those games, or are just looking to up your Disney “game” at home, there’s a new spin-off game coming soon that’s now on pre-order! Disney Villainous Unstoppable! is a new spin-off game announced earlier this year, inspired by the award-winning series that combines the immersive components of Disney Villainous with familiar “move around the board” gameplay for the first time. Disney Villainous Unstoppable! Disney Villainous Unstoppable! allows its players to retell their favorite Disney stories from the unique perspective of the villain’s point of view. In this all-new, family-friendly spin-off, players are introduced to new, fast-paced gameplay and a shared game board equipped with thematic gameplay and immersive design. Featuring bright, colorful artwork, players will race to collect the tokens needed to complete the evil plans of Hades, Ursula, Scar, or Maleficent to win. Preorders are happening now at Target. Overall Game The game looks simple, but there’s an element of strategy similar to Magic: The Gathering or Pokémon Trading Card Game. It’s not super beginner-friendly and takes a bit of time to get the hang of gameplay. It’s rated for ages 7+, and is best suited for board game players and families who want to graduate their kids into more complex games. If you have a child 9 or under who really wants to play, we’d recommend them being a strong reader, as each turn has multiple steps guided by a card. But once the gameplay clicks, you’re in for a rewarding experience, and it’s a fun way to play out a villain-centric story. Villains You Can Play The playable villains for this game are Ursula, Scar, Hades, and Maleficent. The gameplay is more interesting and fun if you walk into it knowing their movie backstories, and the setup will go more easily since each villain has different pieces and ways to win. However, if you’re not as familiar with each villain’s films, figuring out motivations and objectives might not click right away. Maleficent could be a harder one if it’s been a while since you last watched Sleeping Beauty and are not familiar with Maleficent’s storyline. Choose your villain Villain Movers (or game tokens) are cute, but not literal character figurines. They’re more of an abstract, stylized token symbolizing the villain rather than a replica of the character. Each villain also has its own “realm.” The details here are PACKED into the gameplay! Each villain has a unique setup and conditions they must clear to win the game. Card Strategy Cards can be used for movement or actions, and we’ve found that it takes practice to figure out the best plays. Again, the strategy with this game feels more aligned with a higher thinking game, like learning Pokémon TCG, Magic, or playing a game of poker. Cards This game takes strategy, which makes it EXTRA fun! Final Impression Overall, it’s a gorgeous game with rich, villainous flavor. It’s certainly more complex than it seems and not the kind of game meant for a quick pick-up-and-play. It’s best for players who are down to learn the ropes (and love a little chaos thrown into the mix!) For anyone who’s a D&D, Hero’s Quest, and Catan-playing family, this is a perfect game for when you want something a little lighter, and could easily become a family favorite. And while it’s not made for super young kids, it’s also a great option to seek out for families wanting to bridge the gap between Candyland and Villainous (the full game) and for nights where you’re playing with non-gamers who need character motivation or want to have some emotional connection with the game. This spin-off of the hit Villainous game debuts to everyone on July 20th, so be sure to check online for future availability! 4. There’s nothing worse than getting hyped for a ride at Disney World only to find out it’s closed when you get there. Former Muppets Courtyard blocked Some fan-favorite attractions are going behind construction walls in 2025 and won’t be back until sometime in 2026. Whether you’re planning your next trip or just trying to stay ahead of the changes, here’s what we know so far about the upcoming closures at Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. A couple of these are big, so if they’re on your must-do list, you’ll want to plan around them. Let’s get into the closures. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – Magic Kingdom This one hurts a little. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is officially closed for refurbishment and won’t reopen until 2026. Big Thunder Mountain construction June 16th, 2025 The ride shut down on January 6th, 2025, and while Disney hasn’t shared an exact reopening date just yet, they have said it’ll be back sometime next year. That’s a pretty lengthy closure, so it’s likely we’ll see some noticeable changes when it returns. Disney hinted there might be “a little bit of new magic” added during the downtime, which sounds like we could be in for some updated effects or storytelling elements. But for now, if your Disney trip is happening anytime in 2025, you’ll have to skip this wild ride through the wilderness. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad construction July 2025 If you’re looking for a similar thrill in Magic Kingdom, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is your best bet. Just know it tends to get long lines all day, so hitting it early in the morning or late at night is your best shot. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin – Magic Kingdom This ride is getting a serious overhaul. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will close for enhancements starting August 4th, 2025, and is set to reopen sometime in 2026. But this isn’t just a standard refresh—it’s a full-scale update with new tech, new characters, and some gameplay features that fans have been begging for. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Here’s what’s changing: A brand-new show scene is being added to expand the ride’s story and make your mission feel even more like an epic Star Command adventure. Say hello to Buddy, a brand-new robot character who’ll help guide you on your mission and introduce you to the upgraded features of the attraction. The current ride vehicles are being totally redesigned with a new look inspired by Buzz Lightyear and Star Command, plus video monitors that show your real-time score and other fun effects. This is the big one—HANDHELD BLASTERS. No more trying to aim those fixed blasters that never quite go where you want. The new handheld models will have always-on lasers, come in two different colors, and finally give you that first-person shooting experience guests have wanted for years. The targets (yes, those “Z” logos everywhere) are being upgraded, too. Now they’ll light up and react when hit, which opens the door for more interactive surprises along the way. ©Disney If you’ve ever felt like the current Space Ranger Spin was a little behind the times compared to something like Toy Story Mania, this refurbishment is definitely aiming to close that gap. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster – Disney’s Hollywood Studios This is the big one. The Muppets are coming in hot. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith will officially close in 2026. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster But unlike the other two, this isn’t just a temporary refurbishment—it’s a full-on reimagining. When it reopens, it’ll be Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets. Yep, the rock legends are stepping aside, and the Muppets are taking over Sunset Boulevard. Disney confirmed that the Muppets will be headlining the newly reimagined ride when it opens later in 2026. ©Disney We don’t know exactly how much of the original ride system will stay intact, but it sounds like the bones of the coaster will remain the same. What will change is the story, the music, and the theming. And considering the Muppets’ chaotic energy and love of musical mayhem, we’re expecting this to be a totally wild experience (in the best way). Kermit, Animal, and the rest of the gang zipping through L.A. traffic? We’re already sold. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster area entrance on Sunset Boulevard So if you’re a die-hard Aerosmith coaster fan, you’ve got a limited window to ride it before it closes. No exact closure date has been announced yet, but the switch is set to happen sometime in 2026, so keep an eye out if you’re visiting next year. Those are just a couple of closures in 2026 at Disney World that you should plan around. 5. Grab your party hats and birthday candles because it’s officially the 70th anniversary of Disneyland, and we’re celebrating the best way possible — by going to the castle! Disneyland! Today, July 17th, 2025, the original Disney theme park turns 70 years old! We’ve been celebrating this huge milestone since May with new entertainment, snacks, decor, and more. Now, on the park’s official birthday, we’re popping in to celebrate and check out the crowds! Disneyland Park has been making families smile for 70 years, but it doesn’t look a day over 50! The theme park is decked out from head to toe in its birthday best, and it turns out the crowds came to see it. The castle’s birthday decor We expected the park to be pretty busy today, especially since Magic Key reservations have been sold out since April. The crowds were big before we could even scan into the park! MASSIVE crowds Here’s another look! Again, this is all before we even scan in. It’s the space between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Lines, lines, lines Almost ready to scan in! More and more lines Once we scanned in, we grabbed our special button and map, and this is really when we felt the chaos. Getting our map As we entered the train, we took in the beautiful decorations and headed on our next adventure (and it truly felt like an adventure with all of the lines). Entering Here’s the crowd we met once we got inside. We felt like we were weaving in and out of people, trying to move forward. Yikes! Over at “it’s a small world,” a new verse debuted in the final scene, and the lines were long with everyone wanting to hear it. Yep, that’s the line! We are so excited to be here on such a special anniversary for the park we love so much. If you’re heading to Anaheim soon, you can experience so many exciting things. Paint the Night is finally back after years of begging! There are new MagicBand+ activities in the park. Plus, there are SO. MANY. SNACKS! Strawberry Shortcake Macaron at Disneyland! 6. Okay, so a WHOLE LOT is going on in Magic Kingdom at the moment. In Frontierland, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closed to get a bit of an upgrade, and a new Cars expansion, Piston Peak, is being built over what was once Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. Then a Villains land is moving in behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom In Tomorrowland, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will be closing soon to get some updates. Astro Orbiter just reopened after a refurbishment. In Fantasyland, the indoor playground in the Dumbo queue has been closed since February and was supposed to open in spring 2025 (it didn’t). Well, as of today, that playground has partially opened and kids can play in it again. We were visiting Magic Kingdom today, specifically Fantasyland, to check out the new verse added to “it’s a small world.” Then we noticed that something at Dumbo the Flying Elephant had changed — the playground in the queue had kids in it. Yes, it was open and kids were taking advantage of it. The playground has reopened However, not all of the playground is open to children. The part with the netting is closed, meaning that you can’t access that second pathway that leads up to the netting. The netting area is still closed Note that during the playground’s refurbishment, the Dumbo ride remained open and is still open for anyone who wants to ride the classic Disney attraction. 7. If you’re planning a trip to Disney World, you’re probably trying to figure out where to eat out of all the options. That’s what we’re here for! We like to go around trying all the different foods at Disney World, so we can tell you what’s worth it and what’s not. Disney’s Animal Kingdom We recently stopped by Harambe Market at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a popular quick-service location at the park. We tried a few different things, and now we’re bringing you our full review! Atmosphere Harambe Market is an East African Marketplace located in the Africa area inside Animal Kingdom. You’ll find it close to the Kilimanjaro Safaris, and right next to the entrance to the Wildlife Express Train to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. It’s a quick service location, so a great option to get a quick meal or snack. Harambe Market The restaurant is popular, but never really too busy! Since it’s a quick-service spot, the food is a little cheaper than if you were to eat at a table-service restaurant. This makes it a great option for those not looking to take too much time eating or those hoping to stay on budget! But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?! Menu The dining spot is open from 10:45 AM to 3:15 PM. The markets got some great options for meals, snacks, desserts, and drinks — we’re sure you’ll be intrigued by something. Harambe Market is known for its bowls! You can get a Chicken Rice Bowl or a Shrimp Rice Bowl. If you can’t decide, put them together for a Chicken Shrimp Rice Bowl. You’ll also find some salad options and a Beef and Lamb Kofta Pita. If you want something plant-based, the Impossible Kofta Pita is for you! ©Disney They have rice, chips, and fries as the sides for your meals. Got kids with you? They have kids’ chicken and shrimp rice bowls! They also have the classics for kids, chicken strips, and Uncrustables, if the bowls aren’t for them. ©Disney They have both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available at the location. The non-alcoholic Frozen Flamingo seems like a popular choice among guests. We also think there are some intriguing alcoholic beverages. ©Disney Lastly, if you’re looking for a dessert here, they’ve got it. And now, onto the main event — the food! Eats First up, we had to grab the Chicken and Shrimp Rice Bowl for $15.99. This is chermoula-marinated chicken and peri peri-marinated shrimp on jollof rice, with kachumbari tomato salad and tzatziki sauce. This dish was amazing, we would 100% get this again! The chicken and shrimp worked together so well. The chicken and shrimp were both marinated, which elevated both their tastes to another level. Neither of the proteins was dry, despite our thinking that the chicken looked like it could be. Chicken and Shrimp Rice Bowl The jollof rice was also very good. It had a great flavor and a fluffy texture. Biting into the rice was so soft, which balanced the tenderness of the proteins. This was so good! The tzatziki sauce was needed for this dish! It just added to the already great flavor, and its cooler temperature balanced out the hot food. The veggies were very fresh, and the cucumbers added a great crunch to the rest of the dish. You need to try this! After that, we tried the Caesar Salad for $9.99. The salad was fresh romaine lettuce tossed in a house-made Caesar dressing, with tomato and grated Parmesan. Caesar Salad! To be honest, this was a big salad! You could definitely have this as its own dish if you wanted to. They had a protein option, which was a chicken Caesar salad — we’d probably get that instead. The lettuce was fresh and crunchy, and the croutons were very crunchy. There wasn’t too much dressing, so it didn’t make the salad soggy, which we liked. It was a good salad We also tried the Impossible Kofta Pita for $13.49. It was an ImpossibleKofta with a plant-based aioli, chermoula, and house-made chips. Impossible Kofta Pita! We found the first few bites a tad spicy, but then the more we got into it, the less there was. Don’t worry, it’s really not bad in terms of spiciness. The aioli sauce was a great addition, and gave it more flavor. The impossible kofta was too soft of a texture in our opinion, but it wasn’t bad. Here it is! On the flip side, we found the pita was way too hard. It was hard to bite into, and difficult to rip apart. In terms of taste, it was a fine dish. We would get the bowls over this, for sure. It also came with house-made chips, which were very crispy and delicious. We probably wouldn’t get this one again Drinks To drink, we picked up the Frozen Flamingo for $6.49. It’s a non-alcoholic frozen concoction with flavors of strawberry and passion fruit. Frozen Flamingo This tasted like a frozen strawberry lemonade, and we loved it! You could taste the strawberry flavor very well — so this is for strawberry drink fans. It melted fast! It melted very fast in the sun, so about halfway through, it was juice. Even when we grabbed it, there was a lot of juice at the bottom of the drink. It could probably be a little more frozen or slushy, but regardless, it’s a great drink to get on a hot day! Nosh or Not This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if… You want a protein bowl! This place has some amazing rice bowls with protein, and they’re at a decent price. You want a quick grab in Animal Kingdom! There are a few quick-service restaurants in Animal Kingdom, and this one is a good one to go to. You want to try something different! We think this spot offers food a little different than your usual Disney food. You should skip this Disney World spot if… You are looking for something more familiar! The food here isn’t super picky-eater friendly. You want a top-tier quick-service dining spot! Like we said, Animal Kingdom has lots of dining options. There are some we find we like more than this one (like Flame Tree Barbecue and Satu’li Canteen). Overall Overall, we enjoyed the food and the vibe. We will be back there again for some more of those rice bowls. Of course, there are places we like more in Animal Kingdom for their wider range of options and/or indoor seating, but we were very surprised by our meal here! Here’s our meal! In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for more restaurant updates from Disney World and beyond. Make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest Disney news and more! 8. Magic Kingdom’s NEW nighttime parade is just a few days from its grand opening! Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away debuts on July 20th, 2025, and we recently got the chance to hear from Cast Members about what to expect with the new parade. ©Disney Tara Anderson, Show Director at Disney Live Entertainment, and Katie Marks, Producer at Disney Live Entertainment, spoke about Disney Starlight and why this new parade will be unlike anything you have seen before. We were already excited for this new parade, and now we are even more excited! We can’t wait to experience this new nighttime parade in Magic Kingdom! The parade features more than 60 dancers and characters, as well as illuminated floats that create a “stardust illusion.” We have gotten sneak peeks of what characters and movies floats will be inspired by, such as Moana, Peter Pan, Wish, Coco, and more. And while this parade has taken inspiration from every nighttime Disney parade, it will be uniquely its own. ©Disney When asked whether the parade took inspiration from Paint the Night at Disneyland, Tara Anderson said that it was inspired by it, but it has a different vibe. Paint the Night is more of a party, whereas Disney Starlight is a journey or experience. ©Disney The parade will incorporate technologies that feel new and relevant, while also ensuring that it doesn’t lose out on the nostalgia of past parades. Disney adults will appreciate the nods to past shows and parades throughout Disney Starlight. ©Disney During its opening phase, you can view Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away at 9 PM and 11 PM. 9. Disney World is big, like really big. We go to the parks every day, and every day Disney World just feels bigger and bigger, especially when you’re in the middle of EPCOT’s World Showcase or looking for the way out of Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios. Magic Kingdom Believe it or not, there’s a ride bigger than ALL of Magic Kingdom. Yep, a single attraction is bigger than the six lands and castle, and you might only see a fraction of the space when you ride it. Place your final bets in three, two, one… Over in Animal Kingdom, you might have been on Kilimanjaro Safaris, and this attraction is over 110 acres. Magic Kingdom is only 107 acres! Kilimanjaro Safaris This might not seem like a lot to you, but remember that’s only a single attraction that is bigger than the 33 attractions in the Magic Kingdom. Kilimanjaro Safaris Kilimanjaro Safaris features “vivid open plains, shady forest landscapes, and rocky wetlands” that comprise the 110-acre Harambe Wildlife Reserve. Flamingos! You might be thinking, “I’ve never seen 110 acres when on the safari.” There are numerous backstage areas where the animals are cared for, as well as areas for them to retreat to when they don’t want to be in the spotlight. Elephants The areas where you see the animals are also a forced perspective, so while it looks like the lions are super close, they are kept further away with camouflaged spaces between that the big animals don’t cross. Helloooo little rhino! Some animals will come right up to your vehicle or even in front, where you’ll have to wait till the animals move for you to continue on your ride. You might also see a lot of different animals each time you go on a ride, and that’s because there are tons of spaces for the animals to wander around on. They might choose to pass by your truck, and they might decide to hang out in the shade, all up to them! Giraffe! Did you know that you can actually walk parts of Kilimanjaro Safaris? The Wild Africa Trek is a three-hour tour that offers a private guide to help you spot the animals. You can cross over a bridge and get unique views of the animals you might not have seen before. For those unable to cross the bridge, there’s an option to stay in the vehicle and still get a private tour around the safari grounds. Safari truck We love going on the safari and spotting different animals! Make sure you keep following Disney Food Blog for more Disney tips and tricks. 11. Happy Birthday, Disneyland! The castle’s birthday decor Although Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration started earlier this year, today is the ACTUAL 70th birthday of Disneyland, which opened on July 17th, 1955. Now, a LOT of big things are happening today to celebrate, including the addition of a new verse to “it’s a small world” and the debut of a Walt Disney animatronic. If you’re visiting Disneyland today, though, you’ll also be able to get a special celebratory birthday pin and park map. We tackled the crowds this morning at Disneyland, and when we entered the park, we were given a special 70th Anniversary button to mark the special occasion. The button features Dumbo flying over Sleeping Beauty Castle, lots of pixie dust, and the date: July 17th, 2025. Birthday button However, the park map we received today is also special. It features a retro design with Walt and Mickey in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. New park map Later today, there will be a special birthday cavalcade PLUS you’ll be able to catch the Paint The Night parade every evening during the celebration, which will last through next year. Paint the Night Parade But today is a little extra special because it was 70 years ago today that Disneyland opened its gates to visitors for the very first time. So please join us as we sing “Happy Birthday to you” to Disneyland all day long! If you do happen to get to Disneyland today, be sure to check out some special limited-time treats, including the 70th Celebration Mickey Cereal Treat, which is a Mickey-shaped cereal treat dipped in white chocolate, decorated with sprinkles and a blue-colored white chocolate 70… ©Disney …the Clubhouse Mickey Hat Caramel Apple, a Granny Smith apple with marshmallow ears dipped in black-colored dark chocolate and milk chocolate and adorned with a Clubhouse Mickey white chocolate medallion… ©Disney …and the Pink Mickey Balloon Marshmallow Pop, a Mickey-shaped marshmallow dipped in pink-colored white chocolate and decorated with black-colored dark chocolate and white chocolate accents. ©Disney Don’t want to go through all of the stress of booking your Disneyland trip alone? 14. Working each and every day at The Happiest Place on Earth is a dream come true, especially for someone who grew up in Southern California and loved coming to Disneyland Resort as a kid with family and friends. Having my own desk backstage at Disneyland and being able to write about all things Disney Parks once seemed like a pipe dream, making it even more unbelievable to be living that same dream each day while enjoying every second of it (while also snacking on the occasional chocolate chip cookie from Harbour Galley). Every day is still a “pinch-me” moment, especially when I have been fortunate enough to have roles as a Jungle Cruise skipper, an intern for the Disneyland Resort Public Relations team, and eventually a writer for the Disney Parks Blog during my time in Anaheim. Since I was hired as a skipper back in 2022, I have been able to tell thousands of pun-filled jokes, meet cast members and guests from every corner of the world, and tell stories on the Disney Parks Blog. There are so many fond Disneyland memories and moments that play on repeat in my head, yet some days truly stand out and remind me why I truly love coming to work each day. Today is one of those extra special days, and you’ll get to follow along with me and other members from the Disney Parks Blog editorial team as we experience a variety of activities (some just for cast members!) across Disneyland park as it celebrates its 70th anniversary today, July 17. Longtime Disneyland Lovers and Future Cast Members, Follow Along Here’s a look at our Morning of Memories at the Disneyland Resort, celebrating 70 years of spectacular milestones, snacks, attractions, and so much more for all who have come to this happy place. 4:00 A.M. – Celebrating A Morning of Memories with Disneyland Cast Members Just as Walt had dreamed on a park bench at Griffith Park, Disneyland has become a place where adults and children can enjoy a day together. But before the world could step into the magic on opening day in 1955, Walt and Lillian Disney took some time for a special celebration when they gathered their closest friends and families for an unforgettable 30th wedding anniversary celebration. This year, the fun for our cast members also kicked off before the rest of the world could step into the wonder of Disneyland for its 70th anniversary. This morning, a truly special event was held as Anaheim-based cast members, employees, and Imagineers were invited to be among the first to experience this milestone anniversary with special offerings and the chance to be part of a historical moment. I was able to join this incredible group of cast members, spotting everyone from Disneyland Railroad conductors to Market House baristas, as we all prepared for the rest of the morning with plenty of special offerings ahead. Picking up some complimentary commemorative items was just the beginning of our fun-filled morning, with many more things to come as I geared up for the rest of the day. 4:25 A.M. – Visiting a Hot Air Balloon on Main Street, U.S.A. First launching from ESPN’s Bristol Headquarters in May before heading to other locations across the country like Seattle and San Francisco’s Presidio, a special Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration hot air balloon landed this morning on Main Street, U.S.A., just in time for the official anniversary of the park’s 1955 opening date. Adorned with bright, pastel colors and Mickey Mouse’s face on the side, cast members were able to snap pictures next to the balloon on display near Astro Orbiter. Check out this photo of some members of our Disney Parks Blog editorial team next to this massive balloon! 4:40 A.M. – “it’s a small world” Glows with “Tapestry of Happiness” Projected on the classic facade of “it’s a small world”, I swung by the final morning performance of “Tapestry of Happiness”, bringing the exterior of the iconic 1966 attraction to life with a spectacular array of light, music, and projection effects. This show takes place in the evenings as well during the 70th Celebration, but I was eager to catch a special viewing around fellow cast members this morning. Inspired by the style and work of legendary artist Mary Blair, the show created an animated mosaic of Disneyland attractions, moments, and memories with nods to recognizable Disneyland tunes from across the decades. “it’s a small world” was the perfect location for this show, and so many cast members around us were overcome in the full nostalgia of it all. 4:45 A.M. – Snapping a Memorable Photo at Sleeping Beauty Castle Even for me, snapping a photo in front of the very first Disney castle never gets old, especially since this was the only castle seen by Walt. Every day at Disneyland feels like you’re walking in the footsteps of history, making this photo location a must-stop during the event (especially when cast members were able to get complimentary Disney PhotoPass digital downloads this morning!). Do you remember some of your first family photos in front of the castle? Here’s one of mine with my dad back in 2005, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Disneyland at the time. 20 years later, I’m lucky enough to be able to celebrate the 70th anniversary of this iconic place with thousands of other cast members who make the magic happen every day. 5:00 A.M. – Posing at Photo Locations Around Town Square Three additional photo locations were set up inside Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A., including in front of the Disneyland Railroad Station, the Town Square Fire Station, and the colorful 70th Medallion. Several cast members were smiling from ear to ear in this area, where we spoke with Abigail Clay, a core lead on the Disneyland Railroad. Here’s what she had to say about working on the Disneyland Railroad, an opening day attraction that has taken guests around Disneyland since 1955: This area was also always a memorable spot for me, as I used to work in Main Street Guest Show Operations and would help excited guests find viewing areas to catch the latest parade or nighttime spectacular in Town Square. Many guests are used to spotting cast members dressed in black ties and red vests in this area – these cast members are part of the show and help make the magic happen for all guests during every performance. 5:55 A.M. – Settling in for the Flag Raising Ceremony As daylight started to appear in the warm summer sky, cast members flocked toward Town Square to catch the Flag Raising ceremony, featuring appearances from the Disneyland Band and the Dapper Dans. This ceremony — a tradition from the opening day of Disneyland 70 years ago — was an amazing reminder of how the spirit of service lives on at the Disneyland Resort, honoring those who have served in every branch of the U.S. military. This ceremony also featured incredible performances of “America the Beautiful” and “The Star-Spangled Banner”. 6:35 A.M. – Cast Members Get Together for a Cast Photo After a great morning filled with photo opportunities, music and plenty of excitement, thousands of cast members across Disneyland Resort gathered on Main Street, U.S.A., for a massive cast photo. After inspiring remarks from CEO and Chairman of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, and Disney Experiences Chairman, Josh D’Amaro, cast members from every corner of the resort grinned from here to Fantasyland to mark this milestone moment in Disneyland history! 7:30 A.M. – Rope Dropping with Guests at Disneyland Once the cast member festivities started to wind down for the day, the guests began to roll in for rope drop! Rope dropping is one of the most well-known morning activities at Disneyland, where guests will line up behind dedicated ropes at the entrances to several lands until cast members in the park take down the ropes and allow guests to enter all areas of the park when it officially opens for the day! While my team and I had to head back to the office, we were able to spot so many excited guests heading toward their favorite attraction. Whether they had their sights set on a classic attraction like Space Mountain or a new favorite like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, it’s a great feeling to know that so many guests are eager to board their favorite rides in the early parts of the morning before setting off for an adventurous day across the resort. 15. We’re just weeks away from Test Track’s official reopening after over a year of refurbishment, and with the attraction already in previews, we have an idea of how EPCOT is about to change! Let’s go! Deemed Test Track 3.0 by many fans — due to it being the third iteration of the attraction, after the late 1990s original and the early 2010s refurbishment — is the latest version of EPCOT’s iconic E-Ticket. We have already had the opportunity to ride a few times and we’re here to share a few ways EPCOT is about to change! World Discovery is About to Get Busier In the year+ since Test Track has closed, most of EPCOT’s World Discovery hasn’t been bustling with activity. While Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind continued to draw guests to its portion of the land, the majority of the area — consisting of the abandoned Wonders of Life, the perennially unpopular Mission Space, and the aforementioned shuttered Test Track — has been a veritable ghost town. However, that will obviously change when the hotly anticipated refurbishment opens. Mission Space Lightning Lane Shuffle When Test Track reopens, it will replace Soarin’ as a Tier 1 option for Lightning Lane Multi Pass, the grouping that allows purchasers to pre-select one attraction. Given that Test Track will likely be a “hot ticket” upon its July 22nd public opening, this may make Lightning Lanes to EPCOT ’s other Tier 1 offerings — Frozen: Ever After and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure sleight easier to get. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Old & New Without giving away too many spoilers, those who’ve ridden Test Track during previews — including members of our team– indicate that the new version of Test Track has been abundantly changed by adding a new storyline and thematic elements to the existing infrastructure. However, there are also several nods to EPCOT’s past, including to beloved attractions Horizons and World of Motion, the latter of which the original Test Track replaced. The final scene on Test Track! Test Track 3.0 is about to change many things about EPCOT, from how guests celebrate its past to how they plan they’re future days in the park! 16. We’ve been to Epic Universe multiple times now, which means we feel like we have a good idea of everything you can see, do, eat, and drink in Universal Orlando’s newest theme park. Epic Universe We’ve been on out-of-this-world adventures in Celestial Park, pet dragons in How To Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk, conversed with monsters in Dark Universe, earned coins in Super Nintendo World, and witnessed the high profile trial of Dolores Umbridge in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic. However, in all five lands, there is one super BIG problem, but it seems like Universal is trying to solve it. So the biggest complaint about Epic Universe is that it lacks shade. Now, granted, there are places you can duck into with shade and seating, but for the most part, when you’re walking around the five lands of Epic Universe, there are very few shaded areas to get you out of the hot Florida sun. There are a few trees here and there, but it’s not enough to really provide any kind of comfort. It’s like being out in the desert, and you’ll need to pack survival gear like sunscreen (which you’ll want to reapply regularly), a hat, and a personal fan. Isle of Berk However, it seems like Universal Orlando has caught on that this is a big problem. According to @bioreconstruct, some “Cool Zones” have started popping up in Epic Universe. These cooling stations give you a chance to stand or sit near large fans with chilled air. You can currently find them in Celestial Park near the Cosmos Fountain, near the Stardust Racers bathrooms, and the outdoor seating of some restaurants that haven’t opened yet. ©bioreconstruct So if you’re visiting Epic Universe, keep an eye out for the Cool Zone signs if you need to cool off. Walt Disney — A Magical Life will be utilizing the Virtual Queue system to manage guest flow in its opening phase. You will need to join the virtual queue through the Disneyland app to watch this new show. There will be two opportunities each day to join the Virtual Queue, and you will only be able to join the Virtual Queue once per day. Walt Disney — A Magical Life The Virtual Queue will open at 7 AM and at 12 PM (noon). For the 7 AM opening, you will need to have a park reservation for Disneyland Park and valid admission to the park. For the 12 PM opening, you will have either scanned into Disneyland Park or have scanned into Disney California Adventure Park with a Park Hopper ticket. Main Street Opera House Walt Disney Exhibit Once you have joined the Virtual Queue, you will be given a boarding group number, and you will return to the attraction once your boarding group has been called. Even if you receive a boarding group number, you are not guaranteed to be able to experience the show. Main Street Opera House Exhibit We kept an eye on the Virtual Queue this morning on opening day, and boarding groups went FAST! The 7 AM queue filled up in SECONDS. The virtual queue was already listed as “closed” before the clock even got to 7:01 AM. ©Disney We had two reporters trying to snag a spot in the queue and one was able to get group 172 while our other reporter was not able to get a group. If you don’t get a group at the 7 AM drop, don’t forget that you can try again at 12 PM. ©Disney So far, it seems this new show is very popular, so you will want to be quick when trying to grab a virtual queue spot. 19. When Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, Walt Disney said he hoped it would be “a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” It’s been that and more for generations of guests, who today join The Walt Disney Company in celebrating the theme park’s 70th anniversary. To mark the momentous occasion, Disney created a brand spot that showcases the tender memories and the distinct feeling of happiness that guests feel when they enter Disneyland and see their favorite stories come to life. In the Q&A (below), Asad Ayaz, Chief Brand Officer, The Walt Disney Company, and President, Marketing, The Walt Disney Studios and Disney+, shares the ethos behind the campaign, aptly titled “The Happiest Place on Earth.” What inspired the creative direction behind the 70th Anniversary campaign for Disneyland — and how did you determine this was the right narrative to lead with? For generations, Disneyland has been a place of magic and joy both for the young and the young at heart. Throughout the Disneyland 70th Anniversary Celebration, we wanted to celebrate the moments that truly make Disneyland the Happiest Place on Earth. The goal for the spot is authenticity, capturing real moments from guests over several days — that feeling you get when you see elephants fly, super heroes assemble, or the night sky light up in a cascade of beautiful fireworks. The spot is about capturing that feeling, and the immense joy you get each time you return with your loved ones to make new memories to cherish together. What emotional resonance do you hope this campaign leaves with audiences, from lifelong Disney fans to first-time park visitors? From its opening in 1955 until today, Disneyland has always created extraordinary, one-of-a-kind experiences for guests of all ages. These experiences have evolved through the years, but at their core, they always provide a source of pure fun, allowing families to be happy together. The spot our team created beautifully showcases the timelessness of Disneyland. This campaign shows these moments of joy and evokes a sense of nostalgia, bringing viewers back to their own memories of spending time with the people they love at Disneyland. Experiencing Disneyland for the first or 70th time is always better when you are surrounded by loved ones. Being together — laughing, smiling, dancing, and singing — is the dream Walt Disney had for Disneyland. The campaign features deeply personal, unscripted moments from real guests. How did your team approach capturing that authenticity on film? All of the moments you see in the spot are truly candid, happening in real time with real people and real feelings. We wanted it to feel as if these guests captured each moment themselves — as if the viewers are watching their home videos, taking them on a stroll down memory lane as they remember similar instances themselves. We filmed over several days with a small crew, allowing us to capture intimate and sometimes imperceivable moments that happen every day at Disneyland. Throughout the spot, we see the way Disneyland’s appeal spans generations, from David and Shelly visiting the park with their grandchildren nearly 50 years since their first visit, to first-timers June and Anne jumping out of their wheelchairs to dance with their grown children. The love for Disneyland, and all of Disney, is rooted in generations of shared memories and a common understanding of the happiness it brings to people around the world. In what ways does this campaign reflect not only the spirit of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, but also its year-round promise to guests and fans? Disneyland has been, and always will be, a source of happiness for guests of all ages. “The Happiest Place on Earth” campaign reminds all of us of the power of joy and the incredible way it brings us all together. The campaign encapsulates all of this and more. It captures not just a moment in time, but a sensation that lasts a lifetime. It extends beyond this campaign, and it’s our promise to our guests that Disneyland will always be a place of hope, belonging, and happiness. Since its opening, Disneyland has been “a source of joy and inspiration for all the world,” and today we continue to invest in creativity, technology, and innovation to bring the power of Disney storytelling to new heights. As we look to the future, there is so much to look forward to at the Disneyland Resort, including new attractions coming in the next several years from Marvel, Pixar, Avatar, and more. What makes Disneyland 70 a distinct celebration, and how do you convey that uniqueness in the brand spot? Disney is one of the most beloved companies in the world, and we are fortunate to have incredible fans that are unlike any other. The Disneyland 70th Anniversary Celebration, along with “The Happiest Place on Earth” spot our team created, puts our guests and fans front and center since they are at the heart of everything we do. Our 70th Anniversary Celebration blends the best of the old and the new — returning favorites that bring back cherished memories and original experiences to create new ones. We wanted this spot to reflect that same sentiment and ignite a familiarity that brings you back to that happy place. In conjunction with “The Happiest Place on Earth” spot, we are also inviting fans around the world to share their favorite Disneyland memories using #Disneyland70, creating a wave of authentic social media posts that allows fans to connect with one another through a shared feeling of happiness and an unspoken understanding of what it means to be truly happy. 20. This is the one of the BEST things we have seen in Disney World this week! We have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the adorable BDX droids in Disney World, and they have finally arrived! Back in March, Disney announced these Star Wars droids would be making their way to three new locations: Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris — you can already spot them at Disneyland Resort. BDX DROIDS! After five months of anticipation, you can now see the BDX droids in Disney World! You will find them bopping around in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. When we heard they had made it to Batuu on the East Coast, we knew we had to go find them! You can find their appearance times on the My Disney Experience app. Currently, you can find them in three different spots at various times: near Droid Depot, near Millennium, and roaming around TIE Echelon. Although we were told that if it was even misting a little bit they won’t come out, so make sure you keep an eye on the weather if you are hoping to see them! They are adorable! If you didn’t think they could get any more adorable, they each have a name and a personality! The green droid is named Grek. The red droid is the leader of the group, who also happens to be named Red — a fitting name! Red is a bit on the bossy side. Oskar is the orange droid, and he is just kind of figuring some stuff out. Hi Oscar! There is also a blue droid that is named Besh. Currently, he is being recalibrated, so we didn’t catch him out roaming. However, there is a potential for four of them to be out whenever they are all available. While they were out, they even stopped by for a quick chat with Chewie! Chewie with the BDX Droids One thing we know for sure, the audience was loving the droids. Everyone was laughing as they wandered around, bopping and dancing their way through Galaxy’s Edge. BDX Droids Right now, you can spot them at 11:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 3 PM, 4 PM, 5 PM, and 6 PM. However, those appearance times can always change and are also dependent on weather. Make sure you check the My Disney Experience app for the most up to date times you might be able to catch the BDX droids out and about! Plus, you will also be able to see the general location they will be appearing. Stay tuned to DFB for all your Disney World news! 21. Change is in the air at both Disneyland and Disney World. “it’s a small world” In Disney World, three new lands are coming to three parks, while Disneyland is seeing a lot of updates RIGHT NOW as part of its 70th Anniversary Celebration. One of the biggest Disneyland 70th Anniversary Celebration updates has been made to “it’s a small world,” which just debuted a new verse in both Disneyland AND Disney World. We visited Disney World this morning and rode “it’s a small world” to check it out. In Disneyland, this attraction was closed earlier this year to make way for even more changes — a whole new ride scene! Miguel and Dante from Pixar’s Coco have now been added to the attraction in the Mexico section! How cute are they?! Miguel and Dante We also had the chance to get a sneak peek of the NEW Walt Disney — A Magical Life show at the Main Street Opera House. The show opened on July 17th and will be a rotating show along with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. We loved seeing this new show and spending time in the gallery, taking in all the history. In the lobby, you can get a close look at items including Walt’s 1955 Emmy award for the “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” TV show, his Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by President Johnson in 1964, and the Walt Disney Commemorative Medal presented to Lillian Disney by President Nixon in 1969. 24. Disney World’s new pirate-themed lounge, The Beak and Barrel, is set to open soon! While we’re excited to experience this new swashbuckling experience, some things have us concerned. ©Disney Opening later this year in the Magic Kingdom Adventureland, this Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired lounge is described by Disney as a “rambunctious watering hole (that would) offer a welcoming haven for all pirate-kind, big and small, and everyone in between. Here, bandits and buccaneers-to-be from every corner of the seven seas are welcome to join together and raise a toast to the pirate life!” Reservations Will be Hard to Get Given the usual rush to any new Disney World establishment combined with the enduring popularity of Pirates of the Caribbean, it doesn’t seem like a stretch to imagine that reservations will be hard to get for the Beak and Barrel, similar to the initial popularity of Oga’s Cantina over in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The Beak and Barrel ©Disney Crowds Even with reservations, the Beak and Barrel is going to be crowded, likely with parties assigned to every available table space. Given that, it may be tough for guests to move around the lounge and take in all of its rooms and thematic elements, which, according to Disney, will include: The Mess: A large central space themed as a former mess hall for Spanish soldiers, The Mess features long tables that span the room, “allowing for pirates to gather ‘round and tell their own tales, while an imposing anchor covered in candles and dripping wax hangs high above.  A large bar anchors one side of the room, cobbled together from salvaged portions of a cursed shipwreck. At its center, the skull-shaped stern holds an impressive collection of grogs and brew. Guests may also spot the Enchanted Rum Bottle, which was gifted to Merry by the enchantress Tia Dalma and seemingly serves as the source of the tavern’s specialty brews, or Rummy hobbling along the bar’s ledge, greeting the patrons and keeping a close eye on the crew while Merry is away. “ ©Disney The Captain’s Quarters: Themed as the former living space of a Spanish Comandante, the luxurious Captain’s Quarters featuring intricate theming including “fine artwork and drapery”on the walls, much of which “hasn’t escaped slashing blades or burn marks over the years by rambunctious pirates” and group of five ships in a bottle sitting on the mantle mounted above the fireplace that are “rumored to represent pirates from every corner of the world banding together to defeat tyranny.” According to Disney, guests should “keep a weathered eye out, as these mysterious bottles have been known to come alive and engage in a fearsome battle.” ©Disney Time Crunch In addition to the crowds, guests likely won’t be able to experience the whole restaurant due to a time limit. The comparable is Oga’s Cantina, which still maintains a time limit of 45 minutes per party. Oga’s Cantina Drinks Will be Expensive Whether speaking of Oga’s, Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, or the new GEO-82, all of Disney World’s heavily themed lounges feature expensive drinks, many of which can be purchased in collectible glassware. It seems likely that the Beak and Barrel’s as-yet-announced offerings of “refreshing cocktails for Guests ages 21 and up” will follow suit. ©Amazon Bottleneck? Outside of the Beak and Barrel itself, the new cantina’s presumed popularity will likely bring heavier crowds to the back corner of Adventureland and Caribbean Plaza, which, combined with the massive construction happening in Frontierland, could lead to a bottleneck issue in this area of the park. Frontierland construction While we’re VERY excited for Disney World’s new Pirates of the Caribbean lounge to open, it may not be smooth sailing initially for The Beak and Barrel. 25. Today, Disneyland Resort, known as The Happiest Place on Earth, commemorated seventy years by honoring the people who have made those memories possible: Disneyland Resort cast members. Disneyland Resort kicked off the 70th anniversary with an early morning cast member-only celebration in Disneyland park, filled with unique photo backdrops, such as the 70th Anniversary Hot Air Balloon, live entertainment, and a flag raising ceremony in Town Square featuring veteran cast members. The Walt Disney Company’s Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger, and Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro addressed the cast on Main Street, U.S.A., before joining them alongside Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse to ceremoniously ring the New York Stock Exchange opening bell and pose for a once-in-a-lifetime cast photo. After, Bob Iger opened Disneyland before joining Disneyland Resort cast members along Main Street, U.S.A., to welcome guests into the park. “It was on this day in 1955 that Walt Disney opened the gates of Disneyland for the first time and introduced the world to this very special place,” Iger said to guests. “70 years later, Disneyland remains one of Walt’s greatest achievements — a place where generations of people from all over the world have stepped through these gates and entered a world of joy and imagination.” 70 years and counting of The Happiest Place on Earth With the opening of Disneyland park in 1955, Walt Disney transformed the theme park industry, creating an immersive destination where families could create happy memories and spend time together. With its 70-year history, Disneyland Resort has expanded to include two theme parks, three hotels and the Downtown Disney District which reflect the power of Disney storytelling — which includes Pixar, Star Wars, and stories featuring fan-favorite Super Heroes. The resort is adding even more new experiences, including the Avengers Campus expansion, Avatar and Coco in the coming years providing guests with more options to immerse themselves in their favorite Disney stories — creating moments that become timeless memories and stories that are shared again and again with friends and family. More information about these projects can be found in the “We Call it Imagineering” series on YouTube. In that spirit, July 17 marks the debut of a new advertising campaign highlighting how after 70 years, Disneyland Resort continues to be the place that people come to celebrate their happiest moments, featuring authentic guest stories and photos. How Guests Are Celebrating the 70th Anniversary Guests visiting Disneyland Resort on July 17 will not only get to experience the limited time offerings available for the Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration but also get the opportunity to experience the debut of the groundbreaking attraction “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” and new additions to the Main Street Cinema and it’s a small world attraction. In addition, for one day only, guests can collect a souvenir guide map and anniversary button (subject to availability) and experience a special 70th anniversary cavalcade in the afternoon.
