Ask a server at Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen where the best seat in the house is, and in true Jungle Cruise fashion, he or she may respond with, “Inside!” That’s just proof that the witty and adventurous spirit of the guest-favorite Jungle Cruise attraction has spread to the nearby Skipper Canteen restaurant, which just opened its doors in December. The table service eatery features three unique dining rooms, including the crew’s Mess Hall; The S.E.A. Room, a secret meeting room for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers that was once hidden behind a bookcase; and the Falls Family Parlor, formerly occupied by the infamous jungle explorer Dr. Albert Falls. Remember him as the namesake of The Jungle Cruise’s Schweitzer Falls? The theming and storyline of the restaurant is really brought to life in the tiny details you can find in each room, which are stocked with treasure troves of mementos that Falls and the other adventurers collected over years of exploration. Disney Parks history buffs will have a blast picking out references to The Jungle Cruise attraction in the restaurant’s wood carvings, and few artifacts have even made their way over from the former Adventurer’s Club at Pleasure Island (now Disney Springs). Can you spot any in these photos? Another fun element that brings the location to life is the background music. On my latest visit, a friend remarked that she felt she was a million miles away, in a different time, as tunes from the 1930s played lazily in the background. So fun. In December, we paid a visit to Animal Kingdom’s newest watering hole, Thirsty River Bar and Trek Snacks. Learn About: Dawa BarAnimal Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsBut we’re all for old favorites, too, so when AJ got a text from her friend Andy with the news that Dawa Bar in Animal Kingdom’s Africa had switched up their early morning cocktails, we were there!! Now, all the talk about Animal Kingdom these days surrounds the upcoming nighttime activities like the Rivers of Light spectacular, which will extend the park into an all day experience later this spring. (And obviously we can’t wait for the arrival of Tiffins — Animal Kingdom’s first Signature Dining location — as well as the Nomad Lounge to open in conjunction with these new activities in 2016.) But like I said, as excited as we are about all that future nighttime entertainment, we’re here to explore an exclusively early-morning experience: the recently refreshed Sunrise Cocktail menu at the Dawa Bar. While the Dawa Bar operates all day, this special menu of morning beverages is only available from 9:00 – 11:00 am. Though morning pours aren’t new to the Dawa Bar (you may remember the Bloody Mary menu that was introduced in late 2014), we’re here to go over some changes with you, including an absentee from the Bloody Mary selections along with some fun new additions. (Did somebody say “Mimosas”?!) Atmosphere2014 brought a renovation and slight relocation to the Dawa Bar as well as the aforementioned morning menu of Bloody Marys. Animal Kingdom’s Dawa Bar Other than that, though, things have held pretty steady at this African-themed lounge over the years. It still sits right beside the Tusker House check-in area. The Dawa Bar Restaurant & Bar And like everywhere else in Animal Kingdom, the theming is truly immersive. Dawa Bar Lighting Painted Columns Seating is abundant, from the fun mismatched stools at the bar to the tables and chairs surrounding it all offering some much welcome shade, especially in the hot summer months. Lots of Seating Tables and Chairs And here’s a Dawa Bar bonus: nearby entertainment! If you hit it at the right time, you may have a great spot to watch and listen to the musical acts, like the Tam Tam Drummers of Harambe. Tam Tam Drummers of Harambe It’s truly a festive area, and since the vast majority of guests plan a trip on Africa’s Kilmajaro Safaris for first thing in the morning, it’s a really popular place to start the day. EatsThough we’re here to explore the morning sips, we should note that the all-day menu has remained much the same since our last visit. New wine additions include a Glenelly Chardonnay while Beso del Sol Sangria replaces the Superfruit Sangria — you’ll find the Beso del Sol around several locations on Disney property. Wine Menu The beer selection has also received a bit of an update. Beer Menu With a glimpse at the Specialty Cocktails menu, you’ll notice the Tikiti Punch has replaced the Harambe Cooler. That said, the Specialty Cocktails rotate here on occasion, so this may not be the last we’ve seen of the Cooler. Specialty Cocktail Menu Also worth noting, the prices on the menu reflect the drinks being served in African Mask Tumblers. You can still request your drinks without the souvenir glass, bringing them into the more typical cocktail price range at Disney World, from around $10 – 11.50 or so. And now to the reason for our morning visit: the previous Bloody Mary Cocktails menu that featured four versions of the popular drink has been updated and renamed as the Sunrise Cocktails menu. Those who enjoyed the creative selection of Bloody Marys will be glad to know that three of the four variations remain: the Dawa Bloody Mary, the Discovery Island Bloody Mary and the African Bloody Mary (the Asian Bloody Mary is the one that got the boot). But we all know that when it comes to Bloody Marys, there isn’t a whole lot of middle ground — people tend to either love ‘em or loathe ‘em. So now there are a few more flavors to suit other tastes with a new selection of Mimosas! The X-Fusion Mimosa is the closest to a traditional mimosa, made with Graham Beck Brut Rose Sparkling Wine, X-Fusion Liqueur and orange juice. We’ll be taking a closer look at the two other new choices: the Watermelon Mimosa and the Tusker Beermosa. (Beermosa?!??!??!) Sunrise Cocktails Menu The Watermelon Mimosa is, first of all, gorgeous. Watermelon Mimosa Served in a plastic champagne flute, it’s a mixture of watermelon purée and Graham Beck Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine. This sparkling wine hails from South Africa and lends its own fruity flavors including cherry and raspberry, which blend wonderfully with the purée. The watermelon is absolutely the most pronounced flavor, but the other fruits offer a bit of pop as well. The large strawberry garnish is also a nice touch. Strawberry Garnish The most unusual of the mimosa additions, though, is the Tusker Beermosa. Tusker Beermosa This blend of Tusker Lager Beer with orange and pineapple juices strikes me as more of a shandy than a mimosa, but hey… if this allows me to call a shandy a breakfast cocktail, then who am I to complain ? This one was surprisingly good! Personally speaking, though, I’m not a huge lager fan, so I asked if I could switch it out with a different beer selection. But I was informed I could only switch it out with the other “Domestic” option, the St. George Lager. Tusker Beermosa In essence, though, it basically comes across like a “heavier” mimosa, with the pineapple and orange juices giving it a refreshing spin… even in the early morning hours! OverallThough it’s an old standby, it’s fun to see that the Dawa Bar is still serving up some new creations that are well worth a try. Though the rest of the day still gives you a chance to enjoy some of the classic offerings like the Sugar Cane Mojito or Lost on Safari, you may find the Sunrise Cocktails to be a great reason to make Dawa one of your first stops and say “Cheers” to a beautiful morning at Animal Kingdom! If you don’t believe magical things happen at Walt Disney World Resort, just ask the Lewisburg Area High School Choir. The high school choir from Pennsylvania was at Walt Disney World Resort recently taking part in Disney Performing Arts at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort when they got a surprise visitor. Acclaimed beatboxer Kevin “K.O.” Olusola, from the Grammy-winning vocal group Pentatonix, dropped in on the unsuspecting students, giving them an especially “upbeat” musical experience. Greeted by smiles and cheers of excitement, Olusola joined the Disney Performing Arts students as they took part in “Disney Sings,” a musical workshop that gives students the opportunity to work with a professional Disney vocalist and record a favorite Disney song. In addition to sharing his incredible beatboxing talent, Olusola offered helpful advice from his experiences as a musician and member of Pentatonix. Winners of Season 3 of the television singing competition “The Sing-Off,” the platinum-selling recording ensemble Pentatonix has sold more than two million albums in the U.S. and received over 905 million views on their YouTube channel. The group received its first Grammy Award in February 2015 for Best Arrangement, Instrumental and A Cappella. Each year thousands of students participate in Disney Performing Arts programs at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. Two new Outdoor Kitchens join the line-up for this year’s Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, upping the deliciousness at the 23rd annual fest that will span a record 90 days from March 2-May. 30. La Isla Fresca and Cider House are the two new Outdoor Kitchens, and we got a sneak peek of dishes from each at a recent tasting with the Epcot culinary team. La Isla Fresca takes guests to the Caribbean for authentic bites such as Jamaican braised beef with pigeon peas and rice; spicy jerk chicken or grouper with mango salsa and a Tres Leches cake with guava puree (the traditional meringue is replaced with whipped cream in this version). Pair either of the savories with a Red Stripe Jamaican-style lager, or frozen Simply Tropical juice drink (with or without rum). The Cider House offers a spin on tastes from the United Kingdom, including a field greens salad with greens harvested from The Land Pavilion, heirloom apples, Stilton cheese and dried blueberries; and a pear cider-brined shredded corned beef, braised cabbage and pears with Branston (a British food brand) dressing. The Cider House will offer four hard ciders, including a blueberry ciders made in Plant City, Fla., plus Mr. Tractor, a Kölsch-style beer brewed in Winter Garden, Fla. The 11 other Outdoor Kitchens include Urban Farm Eats (new seared pork tenderloin), Pineapple Promenade , Fleur de Lys, Florida Fresh, Taste of Marrakesh, Hanami, THE SMOKEHOUSE: Barbecue and Brews (the pulled pig slider gets crispy onions on top), Primavera Kitchen, Lotus House, Bauernmarkt (German currywurst sausage is new this year) and Jardin de Fiestas. Such diversity of tastes! You’ll be wowed by the colorful extravaganza show put on by the Disney horticulture team – whimsical topiaries (yes, Elsa and Anna will be there), 220 “floating gardens” in the lagoon and a new edible flower garden next to The Land Pavilion. We’ve previously shared tutorials on how you can recreate some of their bestselling items right in your own home, including Minnie Witch Candy Apples, Olaf Marshmallow Treats and more. Try out these activities to sprinkle extra excitement on your rainy day visit: Gear up for the weather If the precipitation catches you by surprise, our Disneyland Resort merchandise locations have you covered … literally! You can purchase ponchos and umbrellas in shops throughout both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks. If you don’t see them on the shelves, just ask a cast member. Experience favorite indoor attractions Galactic explorers may escape to Star Wars Launch Bay or Hyperspace Mountain in Tomorrowland at Disneyland park. For a more relaxing respite from the rain, take a taxi through Monstropolis at Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! at Disney California Adventure park. Ride your favorite attractions … again and again Rainy days can mean more opportunities to ride your favorite attractions! Remember oh those many years ago when I presented you with my Top Five Disney Brownies? Well, times change… as do snacks and desserts in and around Disney World. And now here we are celebrating a brand new year, and the brownie landscape has changed. While a few of our favorites from Round One continue to grace our list of Best Brownies, some are no longer available. (We miss you, Paw Print Brownie and Brownie Fudge Sundae!) But fret not… there’s still no shortage of classic brownie goodness in Disney World (and some not-so-classic, as you’ll notice many of these feature a twist on tradition). Whaddya say we make a NEW Best Brownies list? That’s right… a new list for a New Year! Grab a fork and get ready to dig into some chocolatey brownie deliciousness with me! Peanut Butter Brownie with Warm Caramel SauceOK, this is probably the best thing you will put into your mouth all month. Let me say that I eat a lot — A LOT — of Disney food, and much of it is sweet deliciousness; but this thing took my breath away. You can find the Peanut Butter Brownie with Warm Caramel Sauce at Sunshine Seasons in Epcot. And here’s the kicker… Warm Peanut Butter Brownie with Warm Caramel Sauce You can find it…sometimes. Sigh. There’s always a catch isn’t there? Yep, this is considered a “seasonal dessert” at Sunshine Seasons, and while it was available for about a full year with no interruptions, we couldn’t find it for a while in late 2015. Now, however, it’s back as the Seasonal Dessert, which gives me hope that you might be able to find it on your visit! Warm Peanut Butter Brownie — Cross Section And if you find it, you must MUST try it. Cheesecake BrownieFortunately, an old classic is still with us… albeit in a slightly different form these days. The Cheesecake Brownie found at the BoardWalk Bakery received a makeover of its own when the bakery reopened after a refurbishment in 2013. Cheesecake Brownie It’s been spruced up with a bit of garnish and a sleeker look, but remains equal parts fudgy, moist brownie and rich, vanilla cheesecake, coming together for a decadent dessert explosion! Cheesecake Brownie In my opinion, it actually came back even better than the original version… and that was pretty great, too! Candy Bar Brownie and Peanut Butter BrownieIs it cheating to give TWO “brownie points” (Bah-DUM-Pah!) to The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge? Because I just can’t bring up one without the other when I’m discussing the Candy Bar Brownie or the Peanut Butter Brownie. Peanut Butter and Candy Bar Brownies Both share the same, dense, circular brownie base. But from here, it’s your choice — do you want to go with the light-textured slightly salty peanut butter icing on top of the Peanut Butter Brownie (my personal favorite of the two)… Peanut Butter Brownie …or the sweet-on-top-of-sweet-on-top-of-sweet of the Candy Bar Brownie, featuring a rich chocolate ganache under all those candy toppings and icing drizzle (just LOOK at all those Butterfinger chunks amidst the M&Ms and chocolate chips!)? Candy Bar Brownie Either way, do yourself a favor and grab some Mickey milk to go along with it! Peanut Butter Brownie with Mickey milk White Chocolate Chip BrownieStarring Rolls Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios has earned quite the rep for show-stopping cupcakes, so sometimes this gem of a brownie treat can be overlooked. The White Chocolate Chip Brownie, though, keeps its spot on the list of Best Brownies. White Chocolate Brownie That’s due the extra sweet, generous amount of white chocolate chips balancing the fudgy, darker chocolate frosting topping the whole thing. White Chocolate Brownie It’s a chocoholics dream dessert, so if you’ve missed this in previous trips to the Studios, you might want to remedy that in the new year. Brownie Creme SandwichAnother oldie, but goodie! The Brownie Creme Sandwich at Earl of Sandwich looks deceptively simple in comparison to some of the other brownies on our list. But therein lies the beauty… Brownie Sandwich with Vanilla Frosting Because between two rather ordinary-looking brownie circles is a thick layer of vanilla buttercream frosting, making the whole thing resemble a Whoopie Pie, but with a dense brownie base instead of a soft cookie. Brilliant! PB Brownie Sandwich at Earl of Sandwich Now here is something very important to note: we’ve noticed this one comes on and off the menu over the years as well, and on our most recent visit it was there… but that’s not always the case. So if ol’ Earl has one for ya when you stop by Disney Springs, be sure to get it while the gettin’s good! Brownie A La ModeAh, Beaches and Cream… any time I bring up this old fashioned diner and ice cream parlor located at Disney’s Beach Club Resort, I typically mention a couple of their standout sundaes. You know, gems like the No Way Jose. But the Brownie a la Mode is nothing to shake a stick at. In fact, when I was considering which brownies to include on this list, this one came to mind immediately: a rich brownie drenched in hot fudge sauce and topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. And what dessert at Beaches and Cream is complete without whipped cream AND a cherry on top? Add a few chocolate sprinkles for good measure and Voila! The Perfect Sundae Now, here’s my little secret that lands this one on the list: thanks to the wide variety of sundaes at Beaches and Cream, they carry pretty much every ice cream topping you can possibly imagine. So, when I order my Brownie a la Mode, I make a special request for Peanut Butter Sauce to be added as a topping every time. If you’re a PB lover like me, I highly suggest you do the same! Or perhaps you’d rather try it with Caramel Sauce? You’re in luck there, too. Just ask! The key — as you can see from the photo above — is to ask for a LOT OF PEANUT BUTTER SAUCE. As in you’ll have to order about 10 extra cherry cokes to wash it all down. Ahhhh…nothing better. And what the heck, while we’re at Beaches and Cream and all … though it’s not a brownie, per se, if you’re a brownie fan, you’ve simple gotta try the Chocolate Lovers’ Kitchen Sink. The Chocolate Lovers’ Kitchen Sink Yep… there’s a chocolate-only version of the World Famous Beaches and Cream concoction, the Kitchen Sink. The original version features eight scoops of ice cream entirely covered with EVERY TOPPING in the house, including one an entire can of whipped cream. It’s the same gist with the Chocolate Lovers take, but the eight ice cream scoops consist of chocolate, cookies and cream, and vanilla, and of course each and every one of the toppings is CHOCOLATE. Chocolate Lovers’ Kitchen Sink Layers And, yes, that includes those four full-size BROWNIES you may have spied with your little eye… so it super belongs on this list ;). The “Grey Stuff”Now, our final spot on the list is taken by an item that is only available during one meal at Be Our Guest Restaurant. If you dine in the Beast’s Castle for dinner, then you’ll notice The Grey Stuff on the menu for your dessert options. While it’s described as having a “Chocolate Shell,” that shell is a brownie-cake base. (During lunch, you’ll find The Grey Stuff topping the Master’s Cupcake.) The Grey Stuff Now, honestly, it’s not the ultimate brownie base, as it doesn’t have the moist, gooey quality of a truly great brownie. But entirely covering the base is, naturally, The Grey Stuff: a cookies-and-cream whipped panna cotta that is, indeed, DELICIOUS. And since a dinner reservation at Be Our Guest Restaurant remains a hot ticket (even with the recent Table Service addition of the Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen to Magic Kingdom), we’d be remiss if we didn’t include this one in our Brownie top picks. Plus, we’d hate to disappoint Lumiere. He only lives to serve, after all! So, there you have it! That’s my list of the Best Brownies in Walt Disney World! Which one is on yours ? This week, we continued our popular “All in the Details” series with an exclusive story on how Walt Disney Imagineering is putting the “springs” into Disney Springs at the Walt Disney World Resort. At the heart of Disney Springs is a bubbling spring located in Town Center that represents not only the power and beauty of nature, but optimism and possibilities. To recreate an authentic Florida spring, Imagineers used various shades of bright glass pieces as accent colors to make the springs glitter and nearby live oak and cypress trees were incorporated into the design. The 2016 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival is just around the corner. And today, we’re getting lots of news about how the Festival will take shape this Spring! Mark you calendars for March 2-May 30, 2016, as the festival celebrating all things that grow expands to a record 90 days! This year’s event promises to be just as gorgeous as ever. But if you’re anything like us (and I know you are!) you have one question: What about the FOOD? Once again, the Flower and Garden Festival will have a heavy emphasis on fresh ingredients at Outdoor Kitchens. Jardin de Fiestas Outdoor Kitchen in the Mexico Pavilion Is Always a Favorite With a couple of new ones debuting, plus other big news — there’s plenty of new stuff to enjoy! New For 2016! La Isla Fresca and Cider House Outdoor KitchensOutdoor Kitchens debuted at the Flower and Garden Festival around World Showcase a few years ago, and now we don’t know how they ever did the event without them. This year, Epcot will debut 2 brand new Outdoor Kitchens, which will bring the number to 13. Details are still emerging, but we know that the Kitchens will be called La Isla Fresca and Cider House. La Isla Fresca will emphasize Caribbean influences, with dishes like Jerk-Spiced Grouper or Chicken with Mango Salsa, and Jamaican Braised Beef with Pigeon-Pea Rice. Jerk spiced Chicken Drumstick with Mango Salsa, a Previous Food and and Wine Festival Offering Cider House, on the other hand, will feature a fresh palate of bright fruit flavors paired with cheese. Look for a Field Greens Salad with greens harvested from The Land pavilion, Heirloom Apples, Stilton Cheese, and Dried Blueberries — the perfect dish to complement a Blueberry Hard Cider produced locally in Plant City, Florida. Blackberry Pear Cider was a Favorite at Last Year’s Festival Stay tuned as we cover lots of other new food and beverage offerings from the remainder of the Outdoor Kitchens! I am so excited to share details on all of the special hand-crafted treats headed your way this February from our (candy) kitchen to yours at the Disneyland Resort. The gourmet collection for February will include an apple dipped in caramel and dark chocolate, rolled in chopped roasted almonds and garnished with cherries, drizzled milk chocolate and a few additional chopped almonds, for the finishing touch. The gourmet bark, however, is infused with nut and amaretto oil, drizzled in white and milk chocolate and then topped with dried cherries and chopped roasted almonds. Yes, I tried it — it’s incredible! Are you unsure what type of candy your Valentine might enjoy? Our candy makers are way ahead of you and have just what you’re looking for to make this the sweetest Valentine’s Day yet. Look for a special themed pink Minnie Mouse apple, which I’m not actually showing you here, because I want you to see it for yourself and even share it with me! The cake pop and crispy treat have been dipped in white chocolate and sprinkled with red and pink pareils, with an extra drizzle or two of white chocolate. As you can see, the marshmallow wand is pretty much the same, but don’t forget the layer of caramel it’s dipped in before we dip it and sprinkle it with everything else. Our candy makers had one last trick, or in this case, treat up their sleeve: a peppermint-infused, heart-shaped pattie. Is there any better way to say “I heart you”?
