During eight Disney Fantasy sailings in early 2016, Star Wars Day at Sea transports guests to a galaxy far, far away — in the Western Caribbean. We’ve been talking with Disney cruisers who have experienced the Force during this epic day-long celebration, and here are the results of their top-five fan favorites: Character Interactions Darth Vader, Captain Phasma, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Boba Fett, Darth Maul, Stormtroopers and other characters from across the Star Wars galaxy are onboard for meet-and-greets and photos. Some may even be seen patrolling the decks! Family Costumes Families are encouraged to bring costumes and cosplay for this special occasion. From morning till night, you’ll see Star Wars character look-a-likes all throughout the ship, especially during the lively costume celebration in the ship’s atrium. Film Screenings You can watch all seven films in the Star Wars saga and follow Darth Vader, Luke, Leia, Han Solo, Rey and Finn along their epic journey. Also showing are episodes of the new Disney XD animated series, Star Wars Rebels. Younglings Use Their Power In “Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple,” Force-sensitive children learn the ways of the Jedi and put their skills to the test in a final battle with the Sith Lord, Darth Vader. Star Wars Deck Party and Fireworks The day concludes when the “Summon the Force” deck party blasts off to an exciting evening filled with music, dancing and Star Wars characters. The grand finale is a spectacular display of pyrotechnics, lighting, sound effects and a medley of Star Wars music. Welcome back to Animal Kingdom’s Smiling Crocodile! Learn About: The Smiling CrocodileAnimal Kingdom Disney World Restaurants Now, you may be thinking, “Huh? What do you mean ‘welcome back’? I’ve never heard of the Smiling Crocodile.” Well, the Smiling Crocodile previously went by a name you may be more familiar with: the Gardens Kiosk. In fact, several Animal Kingdom snack stands have received mini-makeovers in the form of new names and, in several cases, updated paint colors; spots like the Eight Spoon Cafe (formerly the Beastly Kiosk), Mahindi (which was Harambe Popcorn) and Warung Outpost (previously known as Upcountry Beverages). In most cases, though, the changes have been in name and fresh coats of paint only while the menus have remained the same. The Smiling Crocodile, however, is one of the exceptions to the rule. Last summer brought a menu refresh to this kiosk featuring the Trek Power Salad and Farmers Salad along with some unique and refreshing beverages. The Smiling Crocodile But our recent visit to the Smiling Crocodile was to check out its refreshed menu and try one of the new items: Smoky Cheddar Grits. Care to join us? Atmosphere The Smiling Crocodile is located in Discovery Island, right before the entrance to Asia. Blending in well with its environment, the colors are mild with mostly browns, orange and greens. The Smiling Crocodile In true Animal Kingdom fashion, the stand itself is something of a work of art, with the outside featuring “carvings” of creatures such as buffalo and snakes. Buffalo Carvings Snakes in the Windows And of course, the creature behind the name… the smiling crocodile! Smiling Crocodile! Given that it’s a kiosk, that pretty much wraps up the tour! Which is great, because now we can explore the new menu that much sooner… Eats The Smiling Crocodile is a simple counter service kiosk with two registers. There is some seating in the area, but the updated menu items are pretty well made to grab-and-go and continue your meanderings around the park: the Chicken Drumstick with potato salad and bread-and-butter pickles, and the Smoky Cheddar Grits with Pulled Pork and more of those pickles. (Both food items are snack credit eligible on the Disney Dining Plan. ) The Smiling Crocodile Menu The Smoky Cheddar Grits definitely struck me as a unique theme park offering, so I decided to give it a go. Smoky Cheddar Grits Similar to the two pasta dishes over at what is now known as Eight Spoon Cafe, the grits are served in a small ramekin-styled bowl. (Those of you who have Disney counter service dessert will be familiar with it.) For $5.99 out-of-pocket the portion is on the small side, but pretty well packed. The grits are served warm and the rest of the ingredients are assembled per order. Cast Member Preparing the Grits I found the grits to be freshly prepared. Cheddar Grits The four bread-and-butter pickles tasted terrific with the final ingredient.. Bread-and-Butter Pickles … which is the pulled pork! It was nicely tender and brought the as-promised “smoky” aspect to the grits. Smoky Pulled Pork All mixed together it was a savory and unique snack (and even somewhat filling, thanks to the meat) that was easy to eat while walking around and taking in what is — these days, anyway — an ever-changing Animal Kingdom. Overall Is anyone else thinking what I’m thinking? Maybe it’s just the similar presentation and serving size, but some of the creativity and flavors of the mini-dishes that have made their way to Animal Kingdom over the past several months bear a striking resemblance to some of the heartier dishes served at Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival. (Consider the Lobster Baked Mac and Cheese at Eight Spoon Cafe, and the Teriyaki Beef Slider at Caravan Road, previously known as Bradley Falls). To be sure, these eats at Animal Kingdom are unique dishes all their own that have clearly been given a lot of thought behind-the-scenes. I just can’t help being tempted to snack my way around Animal Kingdom these days much the way I do each fall for the Food and Wine Festival! What do YOU think? Tuesday, Feb. 9, is Mardi Gras, and no one knows how to do a family-friendly Mardi Gras celebration like the folks at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen and House of Blues in Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort. The Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group has deep roots in the New Orleans French Quarter Mardi Gras tradition. The Mardi Gras menu at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen features such specialties as traditional gumbo, red beans and rice, Creole jambalaya, BBQ shrimp and grits and the famous beignets. Also on the agenda for Mardi Gras at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen is live music from 6-10 p.m. in both the first- and second-floor dining rooms, a Mardi Gras costume contest at 8 p.m. in the Flambeau Room, free Mardi Gras beads for kids and some Bourbon Street specials at the bar. Over at House of Blues, the all-ages entertainment lineup starts at 7 p.m. on February 9 and features L.A. Vation, “The World’s Greatest Tribute to U2,” and The Who Generation, “A Tribute to The Who.” Special Big Easy-inspired menu items include a fried catfish po’boy or a plate of fried catfish nuggets. Anybody up for a quick trip with me down memory lane? I remember when one of my favorite books was made into the box office hit film, “Waiting to Exhale” starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett. I can still hear Whitney singing one of the many catchy tunes from the movie soundtrack. The book, filled with colorful characters was written by NY Times best-selling author Terry McMillan. Now back to the present. I have great news. Terry is appearing at Epcot this Saturday, February 6th for a book signing and fan meet and greet. But wait, there’s more! For all the foodies or, if you’re like me you just love to eat good food, on February 13th you can meet celebrity chef and author G. Garvin. When Chef Garvin isn’t cooking delicious food on TV he’s writing award winning recipe books. These special appearances are in celebration of Black History Month. Guests have the opportunity to meet four renowned African-American authors and cultural icons each Saturday during the month of February. Book signings are open to all guests and hosted at the American Adventure Pavilion, where books written by each guest author are also available for purchase throughout the month. Terry McMillan Saturday, Feb. 6, 1-2 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. Critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Terry McMillan is known for her powerful novels and short stories about African American women. Her novel, “Waiting to Exhale,” was adapted into a film starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett in 1995. Many of McMillan’s other novels, including the award-winning “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” have also been brought to life for film and television audiences. McMillan recently published her eighth novel, “Who Asked You?” Chef G. Garvin Saturday, Feb. 13, 1-2 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. Acclaimed chef and television host, Chef G. Garvin has mastered the art of cooking as well as writing. His cookbook, “Turn Up the Heat with G. Garvin: More Than 200 Incredible Recipes from the Chef Who Keeps it Super Simple,” received an American Literacy Award. Chef Garvin has enjoyed continued success with his subsequent cookbooks and television show “Road Trip with G. Garvin” on The Cooking Channel. While at American Adventure Pavilion be sure and visit the memorable exhibit “Re-Discovering America: Family Treasures from the Kinsey Collection,” a collection of rare art, documents, books and artifacts attributed to African American history. Philanthropists Florida natives Bernard, Shirley and their son Khalil Kinsey share some of their vast personal collection of artifacts spanning 400 years of history. We previously shared with you our picks for the Best Disney Dining Plan Value in Disney Signature Dining. Today, we continue our series exploring which Disney Restaurants offer the best value for your Disney Dining Plan credits! One of the biggest questions that we get here at DFB is whether or not the Disney Dining Plan is a good deal. To begin answering the question, we armed ourselves with calculators and menus and ran the numbers to see which spots had the most expensive average entrees. But it’s more than that, isn’t it? I mean, no matter how much the average check runs, if the food or the atmosphere doesn’t appeal to you and yours, it won’t be a good value, no matter how you slice it. With the calculations in mind, we were curious to determine which One-Credit Disney Table Service Restaurants offered the best deal or value price-wise — but also could be recommended by the experts here at DFB for atmosphere and food quality. All of the restaurants that we considered are One-Credit spots, meaning they’ll require just one credit to dine with the Disney Dining Plan. Here are our picks for the restaurants that give you the best overall bang for your Disney Dining Plan buck when it comes to single credit table service spots. Best Friends Character Breakfast at ‘Ohana When we set out to determine which one-credit restaurants offered you the most in terms of sheer cost, one trend emerged immediately: you can’t go wrong by spending your credit on a Character Meal. We Can’t Resist Eating with this Guy! And with only one exception (Cinderella’s Royal Table), all Disney World character meals require only one DDP table service credit. And while character meals are not one size fits all — you should definitely check out our tips before booking one — they’re for sure an experience everyone can enjoy with a little planning. As for our favorite, this year we are really enjoying character meals that are served family-style like ‘Ohana’s breakfast. These include Garden Grill at Epcot, which you can now book for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Chip n’ Dale Visit with You During Meals at Epcot’s Garden Grill Or enjoy the Princesses at Akershus. You can still enjoy the koldtbord selections and all you care to eat, but meals come plated. Princess Cinderella at Akershus in Epcot’s Norway But my favorite remains the Best Friends Character Breakfast at ‘Ohana. For a combination of cute characters (Mickey in a Hawaiian Shirt, and Lilo is awesome!) and delicious food, it just can’t be beat. Mickey Waffles! And while buffets are great for a bounty of offerings, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and let the food come to you — especially if there’s a baby or toddler along for the ride. Boma Hot on the heels of character meals though, you should probably also consider other buffets or all you care to enjoy service formats if you’re truly interested in “getting your money’s worth”. Boma Buffet Boma at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge doesn’t offer characters — but I don’t see that as a bad thing. The food here is interesting and delicious. Don’t miss the Soups or the Carving Stations at Dinner! (Here’s the recipe for that killer Coconut Curry Chicken Stew!) Breakfast offers some great pastries and more. Breakfast Pastries from one of our favorite buffets — Boma in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge! Then of course, there’s the Zebra Domes. Zebra Dome Yum The restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, and we’ve enjoyed both. And because Boma doesn’t feature characters, I find the ambiance to be a little more relaxing as a result. But don’t forget spots that offer all you care to enjoy, but do the heavy lifting for you. If you wish that everyday was Thanksgiving Day (but without the clean up!), then make your advance dining reservation for Liberty Tree Tavern in Magic Kingdom. Besides getting a hearty helping of history, you’ll also see endless platters of Turkey with all the trimmings. The Full Dinner Spread at Liberty Tree Tavern! And that is truly something to be thankful for. Be Our Guest Dinner But if you’re looking to spend those credits wisely, then don’t leave Magic Kingdom just yet. Because any Disney Food Bucket Lister will tell ya — you’ve gotta book dinner at Be Our Guest Restaurant at least once. Be Our Guest Restaurant in Magic Kingdom For starters, this spot is truly magical. If you’ve ever wanted to tumble through a movie screen and join in the action, this is your chance to do it, as Beast’s Castle has been reproduced in painstaking detail. The Enchanted Rose in the West Wing But then, there are some pretty great reasons to eat here as well. Of course, the menu is French-inspired. We’ve tried pretty much everything, and give high marks to the Potato Leek Soup, the Pork Chop, and of course, the Grilled Strip Steak! Grilled Strip Steak And if you enjoy a glass of wine or a beer with dinner, take advantage of ordering one here — the only spot in Magic Kingdom where you can enjoy this indulgence. Chimay Blue at Be Our Guest Restaurant Choosing Dessert may be tough. We enjoyed most of the options, but the Master’s “Grey Stuff” dessert will be the most high-profile. Les Chefs de France What’s that? You’d like to go to the REAL France? Well, I can’t deliver that to you at Disney, but I can get you pretty close to the real deal. If you travel over the Epcot, that is. When you get there, head to World Showcase for some of the best spots to spend those table service credits. Beautiful Les Chefs de France in Epcot’s France Pavilion While many of the restaurants in this international village boast steep pricetags, we love some better than others. And in terms of beautiful atmosphere and consistently delicious food, Les Chefs de France gets a gold star from me. I know, I know. Epcot international dining can be less than authentic. But all of the restaurants in the France Pavilion are owned by the Bocuse Group, and I’ve enjoyed lots of fare that reminded me of my time traveling as a student through France and Switzerland. A la flamme Alsacienne Service can be slow and reserved. But the restaurant offers a beautiful setting. Teppan Edo But as I mentioned, you aren’t limited merely to France in Epcot. There’s a whole world out there, of course. When it comes to fun and value, consider Teppan Edo. Teppan Edo in Epcot’s Japan Pavilion This Japanese Habachi-style experience is as much food theatre as it is eating. The chefs here are wonderful at all of the tricks that you might expect to see in a Japanese steakhouse. We especially like the fire-based ones. And the food is bountiful. While I’m partial to ordering the Steak, I also love the combos here. Steak and Chicken or Steak and Shrimp give you the opportunity to enjoy different textures and flavors. Steak and Chicken at Teppan Edo And with bountiful sides, I guarantee you won’t leave the table hungry. And there you have it! With so many varied experiences, flavors, and settings, it’s hard to go wrong with Disney Dining. But you won’t go wrong if you decide to try a few of our favorite one-credit options! We’re just moments away from bringing you our first-ever live stream of “Fantasmic!” from Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It’s a guest-favorite show that explores the magic of Mickey Mouse’s imagination – and the adventure he embarks upon when the Disney villains show up to try to turn his dream “into a nightmare Fantasmic.” The show will start promptly at 7 p.m., but because we love sharing behind-the-scenes info and interviews, we’re starting 10 minutes early for some pre-show content and a few special guests.
