It’s just about as highly anticipated as the big game itself: a trip to the Happiest – or Most Magical – Place on Earth after a Super Bowl victory. This Week in Disney Parks Photos, we relive Peyton Manning’s visit to Disneyland Resort after he led his Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl 50 win over the Carolina Panthers. Adult exclusive hang-outs aboard the Disney Dream offer fun entertainment and gorgeous drinks. Sail away on the Disney Cruise Line with my good friend and guest author Julie Brontman! Bon Voyage! So many people think that a Disney cruise is just for the little ones in your family, but they’re missing a whole different part of the experience! I recently went on a cruise aboard the Disney Dream with a friend and we had a great time as two adults on a “kid cruise.” One of the best ways to explore that adult side of a cruise is to visit the bars and nighttime entertainment area, known as “The District.” There are many different spots, all tailored to whatever possible mood you might be in. Evolution Considered to be the “dance club” of the ship, Evolution has a special entertainment offering each night, such as variety show, game show, or comedy act. Afterward, there were dancers from the stage show, but in a whole different style of dance. We were honestly a little surprised to see dancers from a family entertainment show doing some risqué style dancing. But that’s a cruise for you I guess! Those Cast Members work in multiple roles every day to bring the Dream’s entertainment offerings to life. Drink offerings at Evolution are themed around the idea of a butterfly, as is the entire club. There’s everything from your standard martini to something sweet and chocolatey. The first we tasted was the Mariposa, with No3 London Dry Gin, Martini Rosso Sweet Vermouth, Strawberry Puree, Passion Fruit Juice, and Fresh Muddled Basil Leaves. The strawberry/basil combo drew me to it, but this was way too sweet for my taste. It was like liquid candy. It was very dark inside, so this is pretty much all you can actually see of the drink. Drinks at Evolution The next cocktail we had was the Parnassus Apollo, made with Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, Frangelico, Baileys, Kahlua, and Honey. This one was certainly sweet too, but in a rich, chocolatey way instead of the sickly sweet Mariposa. Anytime you put Baileys and Kahlua together you know it’s a good time! I’d recommend this drink to anyone with a sweet tooth. Pink The Dream’s Champagne lounge, Pink, is absolutely serene and perfect! Seating and Bar at Pink Everything is themed around Champagne. The entrance is inside a large cream-colored bubble, and then everything inside suggests the same effervescence and luxury. The décor is a combination of pink and cream, with soft plush furniture and bubble accents up the walls. Behind the bar is an entire wall and lighting fixture featuring hundreds of hand-blown glass bubbles, as if you are truly sitting inside a Champagne bottle. I could have sat in there all night. Pink Bubble Lights Pink Champagne Glass Light Fixture and mirrored ceiling Bar at Pink Pink The Champagne is equally as opulent. There are specialty cocktails and regular wine offerings, but we chose from the impressive Champagne list and both selected the Taittinger Prestige Rose. The menu said it was served with a verrine [Editor’s Note: a verrine here is meant to be a small dessert], but we never got one. Normally I would have asked where the food was, but we were too caught up in the Champagne. It was perfectly light, not too dry, and just a hint of sweetness from the rosé style. The glass will set you back a steep $19, but it was worth every penny if you like Champagne. Pink Menu Champagne Skyline One of The Dream’s martini bars, called Skyline, features drinks from around the world. Every 10-15 minutes or so, the image behind the bar changes and the music will switch, alerting guests that they’ve moved between the cities of Chicago, New York, Rio, Paris, and Hong Kong. What look like windows behind the bar are giant flat screens with city images projected onto them. The entire atmosphere is reserved and sophisticated, with drinks to match. Skyline Lounge Bar at Skyline Paris at Skyline Lounge Skyline Menu Skyline Menu We tried two samplings from around the world- the Ooh La La from Paris and the Zen-Chanted from Hong Kong. The Ooh La La featured Bacardi White Rum, Elderflower Liqueur, Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice, Mint Leaves, and Soda Water. The flavors were delicate but well balanced. It was especially enjoyable after some of the large meals you have on the ship (after Palo that night, we could only handle some lighter beverages). [Editor’s Note: The Ooh La La may be replaced by the Paris 75 on your cruise.] The Zen-Chanted was recommended by the bartender when I ordered another drink that she thought was too ordinary. The Zen-Chanted featured 3Vodka (made from the soy plant), Zen Green Tea Liqueur, Cointreau, Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice, Guava Juice, Sugared Rim, and a Souvenir Glow Cube. This was a little on the sweet side as well, but in a tolerable way. In fact the more I drank of it the more I liked it! The lime juice balanced the guava perfectly, and the green tea liqueur was unexpected and fun. I would definitely drink either of these martinis again! Zen-Chanted But beware if the boat is rocking a bit- they fill those drinks high and we all know how easy it is to spill with a martini glass Beverage Seminars A very unique adult offering on the cruise is the option to sign up for a beverage seminar. These can range from scotch tastings to wine and chocolate pairings. We signed up for the Mixology seminar, and at only $16, this was an amazing value! The bartender taught us how to make four drinks- a Mojito, Tequila Sunrise, Cosmo, and B52 shot. We signed up for the day when the ship was docked at Nassau, so there were very few people onboard, and even fewer in our class. There were only four people in total! The bartender “raffled off” one of her full sized drinks each time, but with only 4 people for 4 beverages, each of us got all of our mini drinks plus one full drink from her. Needless to say, the alcohol was flowing. Tequila Sunrises — Cheers! The seminar took place in Skyview Lounge, where we even got to stand behind the bar to make one of the cocktails. We began with the Mojito, one of my favorite drinks for its refreshing combo of lime and mint. Every step and technique was covered, from the proper way to crush the ice and muddle the ingredients, to how many seconds to hold the pour of each alcohol. We also got to customize the flavor, so I chose to add a touch of Chambord. Mixology Seminar After the Mojito, we moved on to a Tequila Sunrise. This drink packs a punch (oh tequila… *sigh*), and if it’s a rough day at sea, I’d suggest taking it easy on the tequila. But the expert bartender will teach you how much tequila to pour, how much OJ, and the exact angle to hold your glass at to make the grenadine slide to the bottom and form that perfect sunrise look. The drink is beautiful, but I’m not a huge fan of so much orange juice in my cocktails, so it’s not my favorite. Tequila Sunrise On to drink number three- it was time for a Cosmo! We were taught how to make them and then made our own in these tiny glasses- good thing the boat was docked, because a wave would have splashed the drink over the side of the martini glass. But seriously, look at these baby martini glasses! Are they not the cutest? I’m on the hunt for them now. As always, a Cosmo is that perfect balance of sweet cranberry with a hint of tart lime- classic and perfect. Cosmo The final drink was a B-52 shot, and this was delicious! She wanted us to finish on a real dessert kind of drink, so we started in on creating the delicately layered shot. The Kahlua goes in first, and then we very carefully poured Baileys on top. Finally, we added Grand Marnier, pouring it slowly over a spoon to make sure it would sit on top of the other two layers and not cause them to mix. If you’re going to make this for your own party, be prepared to spend some time carefully composing them. But it’s absolutely worth it! This was like a delicious chocolate covered orange almost. She also said you could use another liquor instead of Grand Marnier (peppermint schnapps anyone?). B-52 Surprisingly, after all of that, we were not feeling too under-the-influence. I would highly suggest going to lunch right before. A quick stop at Cabanas to fill us up was exactly what we needed before this seminar. Huge props also go to the bartender. She was incredible, fun, and knowledgeable. As always with Disney, it’s the Cast Members who take an experience from good to great! The cruises are especially important examples of that. These Cast Members work seven days a week, multiple roles a day, making your vacation amazing. The bartenders at all locations were especially wonderful and took such great care of us! Overall There are several other lounges and bars throughout the ship, but these were our favorite stops. As you’re passing through The District at night, don’t forget to stop by the snack bar for a little nibble. Happy drinking, cruisers! I recently shared some of our cast members’ favorite memories with Make-A-Wish recipients and their families, which represented a few of the 100,000 wishes The Walt Disney Company has fulfilled with Make-A-Wish. One Disneyland Resort cast member who has a particularly special connection with Make-A-Wish is Chelsey McConnell. Before joining the Disneyland Resort Corporate Citizenship team to help fulfill Disney wishes, Chelsey served as an intern with Make-A-Wish, coordinating volunteer work. At one event for wish recipients, Chelsey instantly connected with volunteer Matthew McConnell. A friendship began, and four years later the couple married. “It was encouraging to know there was someone out there who cared as much about Make-A-Wish as I did,” Chelsey said. Matthew’s younger brother was a recipient of a wish about 20 years ago that sent their family to Walt Disney World Resort. The trip gave their family a reprieve from the hardships of medical treatment. “Because of that, Matthew wanted to give back to the organization that did so much for his family.” Instead of gifts to their wedding attendees, the McConnells decided to give back to Make-A-Wish in honor of their guests and used the Disney Employee Matching Gift program to match their donation. Not only does Chelsey work on wish visits to the Disneyland Resort, she and Matthew continue to volunteer with Make-A-Wish. There are many partners that we work with at Disney – but it’s no secret that “Wheel of Fortune” is one of our favorites … and we’re always thinking about new ways that we can work together. Last year, we brought three of our vacation experiences together to create an exciting week on “Wheel”: Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney and Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Hawaii. Pat and Vanna, along with the entire crew from “Wheel of Fortune,” made memories that will last a lifetime as we all traveled from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Happy Friday everyone! I have an exciting update to share about the weekly author’s series celebrating Black History Month at Epcot. Legendary Grammy-award winning singer, actress and NY Times best-selling author Patti LaBelle will be at the American Adventure Pavilion on February 20th from 12:30 to 1:30 pm for book signings and meet and greets with fans. The star of her own cooking television series “Pattie LaBelle’s Place,” Patti is just as captivating in the kitchen as she is on stage and has cookbooks filled with southern-style recipes. Additionally, appearing on February 27th is Terrence Roberts, Ph.D. one of the “ Little Rock Nine”, a group of history-making African-American students who, in 1957 were the first black students ever to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Dr. Roberts, who was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999 wrote “Lessons from Little Rock” a memoir of his experience during the integration of the school. Have a hankerin’ for some Ice Cream Nachos?!? Of course you do! I mean, really… who doesn’t? But where can a Disneyland guest score some, since they’re not showing up on any menus these days? Well, just like days of yore, you CAN still grab them — at least for now — at The Golden Horseshoe. The Golden Horseshoe You see, all the components of the ice cream nachos are still in the house: mint chocolate chip, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream along with hot fudge, strawberry sauce, chocolate chips, whipped cream and cherries served together on a bed of waffle “chips”… all courtesy of the three Waffle Cup Sundaes that remain on the everyday menu. We are back at the Beach Club Marketplace, the Beach Club Resort’s counter service restaurant and merchandise location. Learn About: Beach Club MarketplaceDisney World Restaurants Better known in many ways for being a gift shop, the Marketplace tends to get overlooked in favor of some the more popular spots nearby. After all, when your neighbors include locations like Beaches and Cream, the BoardWalk Bakery, Trattoria al Forno, and The Crew’s Cup Lounge, it can be hard to make a splash. And heck, staying at a resort that practically has its own water park thanks to Stormalong Bay, you can always grab a quick meal at Hurricane Hanna’s without ever leaving the pool area! But here we are at this unassuming stop tucked in the back of the Marketplace to check it out a little more. The last time we visited the Beach Club Marketplace, it was to grab a late night dinner (well, not counting our annual holiday visit to see the Beach Club’s Gingerbread Carousel). But our more recent stop here was in the A.M. hours. I’d heard something about a French Toast Bread Pudding that seemed pretty fantastic, so over to Beach Club Marketplace I went! Atmosphere The Beach Club Marketplace is located by the Beach Club’s courtyard entrance. Beach Club Marketplace No matter which way you enter, the souvenirs and registers will greet your eyes sooner than the food counter and grab-and-go options, most of which are tucked in the back corner (aside from the dry goods, which have a bit more prominence). Gift Shop in the Beach Club Marketplace Registers at Beach Club Marketplace There are just a few tables and chairs directly in front of the Marketplace, and it doesn’t seem like much until you realize that there are some downright beautiful places to take in your meal if you have a look around. The shaded white tables and chairs by the courtyard tend to be my preferred seating area. Courtyard Seating But if you’d rather eat indoors you can find a wall of comfy seating down the hallway that leads to the Solarium — the room where the resort has just started hosting Afternoon Tea in the Solarium Gardens on select dates. Indoor Seating Be sure to explore the nautical elements at the Beach Club during your visit… Starfish Lighting Beach Club Decorations … right down to the brand new carpets! Nautical Mickey! The Beach Club really is a lovely resort, even if it doesn’t carry quite as high a profile as some of its Deluxe Resort counterparts like the Grand Floridian, Polynesian Village, or Animal Kingdom Lodge. But enough exploring for now… time to grab the most important meal of the day! Eats Upon entry, the first thing you’ll notice with regard to food is an abundance of pre-packaged items such as cereals, soup, Pop-Tarts, and chips. Beach Club Marketplace – Dry Goods Roomy refrigerators include all the regular beverages, but also an ample selection of frozen goods — handy for the Disney Vacation Club members staying here. Refrigerated Bottled Items And, of course, your Rapid Fill Mug Refilling Station offers soda, coffee, iced teas, and hot cocoa. Rapid Fill Refilling Station Things get a little more interesting once you head towards the back, with a decent dessert collection including plenty of cheesecake slices and Cupcakes. Grab ‘n Go Items An otherwise ordinary pastry case does offer a cool signature item with the Coconut Bars. Pastry Case Keep an eye out for the gluten-free bakery options like the OMG Cookies and Brownies, and even a few goods from the Erin McKenna Bakery. Gluten-Free Items Now, even before we give you a close-up shot, you’ll probably be able to tell from the photo below that the hot food options are limited by the small menu size. Hot Food Serving Area A simple selection of sandwiches and flatbreads make up most of the entrees for lunch and dinner. Menu Likewise, the breakfast menu is also laid back, featuring just four choices: the Scrambled Egg Platter, Breakfast Sandwich, Oatmeal or Grits. (Though I will say the rather garden variety platter and breakfast sandwich are greatly helped by a side of yummy, cheesy Potato Casserole — a total standout here!) Hot Breakfast Food Items So, with a focus on the basics, you may be surprised to learn that the most exciting breakfast item finds its home on the Kids’ Menu! Along with a Scrambled Egg Sandwich, they also offer French Toast Bread Pudding for the kiddos. Kid’s French Toast Bread Pudding Meal A small side of bacon and grapes come along with the plate. Side of Bacon Side of Grapes And there is also a small container of maple caramel sauce along for the ride that spruces things up a bit. I’m sure you could get more of this if you asked. Side of Maple Caramel Sauce The serving of bread pudding itself is on the small side, as expected with a kids’ meal item. French Toast Bread Pudding But let me tell you…. those kids are having all the luck! The nicely warm pudding is topped with oodles of cinnamon along with dots of golden raisins. The maple caramel sauce is basically caramel-flavored syrup, offering additional unique flavor. French Toast Bread Pudding After digging through the cinnamon topping (you’ll see swirls baked in, too!), I found that the base of the bread pudding wasn’t overly sweet, making it a really enjoyable breakfast for us big kids, too. And even though it’s a small serving custom-made for little ones, the dense base provided a hearty enough start to my day. French Toast Bread Pudding Cross-Section I have to say, the French Toast Bread Pudding was a really nice find, especially considering the overall simplistic menus at the Beach Club Marketplace. Overall No matter where you start your Disney day, it’s always fun to see some variation among more commonplace breakfast items. Dishes like Tonga Toast at the Polynesian’s Captain Cook’s (or Kona Cafe, if you’re opting for Table Service) and even the go-ahead-I-dare-ya Pop-Tarts Breakfast Sandwich at Everything Pop spring to mind. So finding the French Toast Bread Pudding solely on the Kids’ Menu here is a bit unfortunate — I’d love to see this as a full adult meal entree. But, hey, when we’re in Disney World, aren’t we all just kids at heart, anyway ? So my vote is go for it, especially if you’re looking to start your day with a little vacation splurge at the Marketplace. Would you like to try the French Toast Bread Pudding? For many of us, there’s nothing better than planning a trip to Disney. I mean, sure…attractions and cool resorts and stuff. But best of all is the FOOD! What happens if you have a super uber picky kiddo (or other member of your party) among your ranks though? It can really rock your trip. But it doesn’t have to! And that’s why I dedicate a lot of attention to making plans with picky eaters in the DFB Guide to Walt Disney World Dining. For starters, nearly everyone is bound to find something he or she likes, due to sheer variety alone! Mmmmm…Mickey Waffles! But buffets are especially great when you have a toddler in tow. Sure, an argument can be made for character meals where service is family style. But I love buffets when I have a hard-to-please preschooler along for the ride because they can share from my plate at no additional charge. Corn Dog Nuggets at Tusker House And this is especially awesome when you just know that your kiddo will either eat like a bird or be too distracted by characters or surroundings to actually consume much. Looking for something a bit different? Check out Cape May Cafe for breakfast or Tusker House for lunch. Both offer great spreads as well as character dining. Unique Meal Suggestions for Kids Maybe your picky eater isn’t picky because they don’t like a lot of stuff — but because they don’t like the common stuff. That’s where our suggestions for unique meals for kids can come in really handy. For instance, Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge offers delightful, out of the ordinary fare for everyone — even kids. Our little diner enjoyed the grilled chicken at a recent dinner. But the Peanut Butter Turtle, a kid’s dessert, was a hit with young and old alike! Peanut Butter Turtle at Sanaa At Magic Kingdom, opt for lunch at Be Our Guest Restaurant. Their Braised Pork, Coq au Vin Style is anything but common. Braised Pork, Coq au Vin Style And be sure to pencil in time in Epcot for…just about anything! You have your pick of interesting meals from around the world here. From Moroccan food at Tangierine Cafe to a variety of fantastic Japanese offerings and everything in between. Mediterranean Lamb Wrap at Tangierine Cafe in Epcot This park has everything. Let Your Child Help with Planning I don’t know about you, but my kid has major control issues (I have NO idea where he gets those…).Sometimes, the key to getting them to join in is empowerment. Let them help with the planning, and suddenly, they’re on board! When planning, and encouraging a picky child to help with the plans, think about your group or family and the reason for your Disney World visit. Every Disney Meal is a Celebration — So Don’t Forget Dessert, Like Gelato Frizzante at Via Napoli After all, eating in Disney World isn’t just fuel — it’s part of the party! How do you think you and your dining companions will most enjoy celebrating your vacation together? It’s a great question to get the ball rolling on your plans. For older kids, we have lots of planning tools, like our Brainstorming Worksheet and our section on Making It Personal that will have them excited about the new adventures that lay before them! Order Sides or A La Carte Items to Make a Meal Making meals from side dishes is a great way to customize a meal for a picky or small eater. Lots of times, items like Macaroni and Cheese are available as entrees — but they can also be available as a la carte side items as well. (And speaking of my favorite side dish — here’s a recipe for one of Disney’s Best — the Mac and Cheese at Jiko.) Request a la Carte Servings of Favorite Sides, Like Mac and Cheese Don’t see it on the menu? Ask your server. Disney restaurants are, for the most part, extremely accommodating. Chances are, if you see it someplace on the menu, you can get a serving of it. We Asked For Spicy Tomato Butter at Mama Melrose Because It Was So Good! We also like to take advantage of appetizers for meals. Again, this is especially great for guests who are lighter eaters. When All Else Fails…Child Care! You have sacrificed signature restaurants and upscale options to keep the peace for the whole trip. And now it’s time to splurge a little! Kids Clubs offer age-appropriate activities that will keep Junior busy while you enjoy a relaxing evening. Lilo’s Playhouse at the Polynesian Village Resort Is a Favorite Most Kids’ Clubs are open from 4:30 until midnight, and are available for potty-trained children ages 3-12. Dinner and snack are provided. Give it a try sometime! I guarantee that most kids would prefer finger painting and playing video games to an evening in a “grown up” restaurant. Once again, Joffrey’s Espresso Coffee & Pastries kiosks all over Disney World are serving up some specialty items to get us in the festive spirit. We checked out the Winter Specialty menu on our last visit, and now they’re helping us get ready for a caffeinated Valentine’s Day! Joffrey’s American Adventure Coffee Kiosk in Epcot Espresso drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas make up the menu along with tea and hot chocolate. Select Joffrey’s locations such as the one just outside of the American Adventure Pavilion at Epcot also offer opportunities to “spike” your coffee with your choice of Bailey’s, Kahlua, or Jameson. Joffrey’s Menu Want a little pinch of love in your coffee? Good! Because that’s what you’ll get with the Valentine-themed seasonal Signature Beverages. Options include the Cupid’s Kiss Latte with caramel and coconut syrups and dark chocolate with the espresso; the Valentine’s White Mocha featuring white chocolate and raspberry; and the Amoré Cocoa Latte, which blends the espresso with dark chocolate and light coconut syrup. Valentines Day Themed Beverages As always, any drink you order can be made hot or iced. The recent dip in temps made a hot option sound like it would hit the spot (don’t forget to pack those jackets and hoodies, folks!). My choice? The Cupid’s Kiss! And check out the Disney Theme Parks cup in Joffrey’s purple! These weren’t around when we sampled the Winter Specialties. Cupid’s Kiss An important FYI for all my fellow whipped cream fanatics: I was expecting whipped cream based on the menu picture, but the barista said the only Valentine’s Day drink to automatically come with whipped cream is the Valentine’s White Mocha. However, it can be added to any beverage upon request. I got mine as-is in the name of DFB research. Now that’s what I call “taking one for the team” . Steamed Milk and Foam Let’s get right to the heart of things (‘cuz Valentine’s Day ). All you candy fans out there should fall for this one. The dark chocolate, caramel and coconut combine really well with the rich espresso, allowing the coffee flavor to come through while still providing a definite fix for a sweet tooth. The Cast Member shared that these Valentine’s-themed drinks will stick around for at least a few weeks… Cupid’s Kiss and Enjoying the View! … until the next round of seasonal drinks, of course . So if you’re hoping to grab a kiss from Cupid, make sure you stop by your nearest Joffrey’s Coffee kiosk in Disney World as soon as you can!
