If you’re anything like us, you’re anxiously seeking details about Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2019, work continues in earnest… at least as much as we can see. On a visit to the park yesterday, we were able to capture a little more detail of this building that’s being constructed adjacent to Tatooine Traders. Grand Avenue Structure Wrapping is down on this project (it was there just last week), so we can see a lot more detail, like the green tile roof and linear, simple overall design. Grand Avenue Structure No word yet on what this building is, but there’s a large opening on the front. Maybe a small storefront? A place to grab a snack? Or just a DVC sales location? Time will tell! Grand Avenue Structure We also peeked over the wall in Toy Story Land to see what we could see. There’s plenty of scaffolding still in place, but the topography looks really cool. Walls have gone up around Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland marking the beginning of refurbishment season in Southern California. Walls up around Sleeping Beauty Castle During the slower months of January and February, Disneyland frequently closes some rides and attractions for refurbishment. In addition to Astro Orbitor and Splash Mountain closures scheduled for this Spring, the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle will also get some much needed repairs. The roof of Sleeping Beauty Castle suffered damage from the 60th Anniversary Diamond Celebration decorations that were up way back in 2015 and 2016; there’s been some minor restoration works since then, but it was time for a big fix. Decorations from Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary Upon entering Disneyland, guests will find grey walls surrounding the base of the castle. To get to Fantasyland, guests are being asked to use the Big Thunder Mountain Trail or the Parade Route along the Matterhorn. For those of you worried about photos, you’ll want to take them further down Main Street as the top of the castle is uncovered – for now… Sign directs guests to Fantasyland during castle refurbishment According to the OC Register, Disneyland plans to spend $300,000 to re-roof Sleeping Beauty Castle. We’re expecting a pretty extensive renovation that will involve scaffolding and scrims that will likely block some of the castle from view. We checked out the permits – and fear not! – there will be no major changes to the castle beyond the fixes to the roof, which involved installing fibre-reinforced plastic on the turrets. Expect the same signature warm pink towers and bright blue roofs once the walls come down! Sign on Sleeping Beauty Castle construction wall As of now, the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough is still open to guests; however, construction will force that attraction to close beginning January 17th. This attraction will reopen, and the walls will come down, sometime in the Spring. Walt Disney World is never shy to jump on the bandwagon of snack trends, and we love them for it! Edible cookie dough is one such trend — and it’s popping up all over the place! We first spotted it at All-Star Sports back in July, then it arrived (in Mickey style!!) at AristoCrepes in Disney Springs. Now there’s a second Disney Springs locale getting in on the action: B. B. Wolf’s! Maple Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Flavor combinations in edible cookie dough can be as diverse as cookies themselves, and AristoCrepes offered the most unique combo we’d seen thus far with Gingerbread Butterscotch. But B. B. Wolf’s is taking it there with Maple Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough! Maple Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bacon in dessert can be a little hit or miss for us, but this one looks promising enough with lots of crispy bacon bits on top of the otherwise ordinary-looking cookie dough. The bacon, sadly, isn’t caramelized or sweetened in anyway, so it’s just a serious savory bomb. This creates a really stark contrast to the otherwise sweet dessert. Maple Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough For us, this uber-savory addition didn’t work. It’s too salty and overpowers the (relatively nonexistent) maple and chocolate, both of which take a backseat to the super-salty bacon. There are plenty of chocolate chips in there, but they can’t compete with the bossy bacon. And the cookie dough flavor itself just isn’t there. Maple Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough The concept we do not dispute, but it’s a little clunky and thus out of balance. Today, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort revealed that its newest Marvel attraction – Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! – will open on March 31! It will be the world’s first attraction featuring Ant-Man and The Wasp, as well as the first Marvel-themed attraction featuring a female Super Hero as a lead character. The long-anticipated launch marks the resort’s second Marvel-themed attraction and the continued development of an ultimate hub for Marvel Super Hero action in the region as part of Hong Kong Disneyland’s multi-year expansion. The new attraction will send guests on a critical mission with Ant-Man and The Wasp who have answered Iron Man’s call for support in defending Hong Kong against Hydra’s attack. This high-tech, high-energy interactive adventure begins with a visit to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Science and Technology Pavilion, a newly opened facility at Stark Expo in Tomorrowland set up to showcase S.H.I.E.L.D.’s latest technological developments. A seemingly ordinary visit is soon interrupted by Hydra attempting to steal the Arc Reactor atop Stark Tower in Kowloon, Hong Kong, while its artificial intelligence Arnim Zola sends an army of Swarmbots to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Pavilion to steal a Data Core with highly confidential information. As he battles Swarmbots in Kowloon, Iron Man calls in Ant-Man and The Wasp to defend the pavilion, because only they can shrink down to get between the bots’ armor to destroy them from the inside. With thousands of bots and only two of them, Ant-Man and The Wasp call on guests at the pavilion for help. Aboard one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s newest combat vehicles, D/AGR – the Defense/Assault Ground Rover (aka “the Dagger”) – guests are issued an EMP Blaster and engage in a heroic battle alongside Ant-Man and The Wasp to defeat Zola and his Swarmbots. The attraction features “Ant-Man and The Wasp” stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly reprising their roles, as well as scoring by Christophe Beck, composer for the Ant-Man movies. Artefacts and research items from more than a dozen Marvel movies, TV show episodes and comics will also be on display. Created with classic Disney storytelling enhanced by cutting-edge scenic illusion technology and a state-of-the-art gaming system, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! will be an exhilarating and interactive can’t-miss experience at Hong Kong Disneyland when it opens March 31. When I was in college, I spent a semester studying in Spain. The experience gave me an appreciation for the Spanish culture in a way reading about it in books never quite could. The food and the architecture were two of my favorite discoveries – flavors I had never dreamed of and buildings that seemed like they were from a fairytale. You can imagine my delight when I learned that celebrated Spanish chef José Andrés would be opening a restaurant at Disney Springs – I’ve been dreaming about paella and sangria ever since! Jaleo by José Andrés is expected to debut this winter at Disney Springs, and when the doors open in the coming weeks, guests will discover a 22,000 square foot wonder that will house Andrés’ largest restaurant to date. The venue will bring the spirit and flavors of Spain to Disney Springs visitors via a freestanding, two-story building with a design that was strongly influenced by the artichoke – a vegetable native to Andrés’ homeland. While I could never quite figure out exactly what to do with the beautiful food, renowned Spanish design firm Capella Garcia Arquitectura used it as their ultimate inspiration, working closely with José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup to ensure that every detail of the striking design was just right. In this rendition, an artichoke structure opens up with “petals” that form pergolas, seamlessly extending to the outdoors. With no solid walls, the space is completely open to the outside and features large windows that offer picturesque lake views and an impressive central courtyard that visually connects both floors. Juli Capella, principal for the design firm shared, “There are no cubic forms, no opaque walls, no straight lines: here reigns a plant-like organicism with its dynamic forms. An avant-garde, expressionist and welcoming architecture.” It sounds like a work of art with a color palette showcasing citrus shades like orange and lemon paired with stunning photos and paintings from some of Spain’s most celebrated photographers and artists. We are eagerly awaiting the opening this winter season of Jaleo by Chef José Andrés in Disney Springs! To further whet our appetites, today José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup, in collaboration with renowned Spanish design firm Capella Garcia Arquitectura, has provided new artwork for the 22 thousand square foot restaurant which will serve the Chef’s authentic Spanish cuisine. ©José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup They shared that “the architectural form of the building is inspired by an artichoke, a vegetable native to José’s homeland. The artichoke structure opens up, inviting guests to enter and experience the very best of Spanish cuisine.” Color choices will present citrus-inspired hues of orange and lemon, with wood and ceramic materials also setting the scene. ©José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup Interestingly, the two-story building is without solid walls, making it completely open to the outside! The space will offer guests lake views while protecting them from the Florida sun. Every day dreams come true for guests at Disney Parks around the world. Now, with the new Disney Aspire education program, Disney is helping make some extra magic for cast members, too. As part of this 100 percent tuition-paid education program, U.S.-based hourly full-time and part-time cast members can now pursue their dreams – and the program has already helped hundreds of cast members take the next step toward their college or professional dreams! Today, we’re proud to kick off our new “Dreams Within Reach” series by introducing you to the first Disney Aspire graduate, Anthony Payne, a Custodial Cast Member at the Walt Disney World Resort. At Epcot, Anthony works through the night to make sure the park is looking great and ready for guests each morning. With support from Disney, Anthony has now completed his HVAC Technician course work at Penn Foster as part of his dream to work on the Disney Cruise Line. A surprise visit from Mickey Mouse helped commemorate his achievement, which Anthony says was inspired by his wife and three children. “They have always been my biggest motivation,” he says. “I’ve wanted to go back to school for about 15 years now, and I haven’t heard of too many companies offering something as generous as this.” “I really feel like Disney is investing in our futures, and they’re helping us to grow and follow our dreams. I can’t wait to use my skills, and advance as far as I can here.” Disney Aspire launched this year to help more than 85,000 hourly cast members reach their goals by equipping them with education programs, coaching and job skills so that they may learn and grow. The $150 million program gives cast members the opportunity to enroll in online courses across a network of schools, with the cost of tuition and books covered by Disney.
