We love going to Isle of Java in Animal Kingdom for its delicious pastries — hellooo, Tiger Tail Chocolate Twist. Isle of Java But today we’re here to tell you about something we haven’t tried before! The Party Parrot Slush has flown into Isle of Java, and it’s ready for a good time! To create this concoction, Cast Members mix Parrot Bay Coconut Rum with layers of blue raspberry, lemonade, and cherry slushes. Isle of Java has released this fun new beverage for the month of July. The brain freeze we had was definitely worth it because we love our slushy drinks! While the slush layers are somewhat basic in flavor, the coconut rum blends extremely well alongside them without being overpowering. You can distinctly taste every flavor with each sip, but never too much of one over another. If you love frozen alcoholic drinks as much as we do (and you’re 21 or older), you can head over to Isle of Java and grab this mid-afternoon pick-me-up for $10.50! (If you ask us, the summer heat is the perfect excuse to go back for a second after you finish your first.) We’ll catch you later! We’re going to go hang out and share a Party Parrot Slush with our new BFF, Kevin. Have you tried the Party Parrot Slush at Isle of Java? Let us know in the comments below! Chef Mickey’s is about as classic a Walt Disney World character buffet as they come. Learn About: Chef Mickey’s Disney World Restaurants Located on the fourth floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort and in the shadows of arriving and departing Monorail trains, Chef Mickey’s is a character buffet featuring the Fab Five — Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, and Donald — in their finest chef attire. The open, raucous space is dominated by sparse design and seemingly endless food choices, making it a great place for many families. No need to shush the kids when they devolve into squeals of delight with Minnie coming around the corner. No worries about finding something for everyone to eat. Just grab a plate, fill up, and get some character love. But the food quality here hasn’t been great in the past, and while it’s certainly passable, for THAT price you expect something that’s good, at least, not something that’s mediocre. Still, Chef Mickey’s draws a crowd — you’ll definitely want to snag an Advance Dining Reservation if you want to eat here — and it’s all about that Fab Five meet and greet life. Chef Mickey’s I ventured to Chef Mickey’s with my family for brunch to see if the food is showing any signs of improvement (and to peep the Fab Five in their chef-y finest!). Atmosphere Like its food, Chef Mickey’s isn’t winning any awards for its decor or atmosphere, unfortunately. Because it’s located in Disney’s Contemporary Resort, it continues to embrace the late-twentieth century design of the Resort — and that means it honestly feels a bit dated. Chef Mickey’s Has Something for Everyone In 2018, the restaurant moved to a temporary location in the Resort’s convention center for maintenance; but only the kitchen underwent some work, so even that recent closure didn’t result in a refreshed dining space. Its contemporary design is circa the 1990s (it opened as Chef Mickey’s in 1995), but while “contemporary” should mean the style evolves with the times, that… hasn’t happened here. Seating Area and Buffet The buffet itself is a mix of metals, glass, and colorful backlit panels. Buffet The main seating area of the restaurant is in the big open space surrounding the buffet, and that space is…pretty loud. It’s essentially a massive lobby that magnifies every sound. If that doesn’t appeal to you, consider requesting seating in one of the spaces adjacent to the main dining room. These are much quieter, relatively speaking, but they also have some drawbacks. Chef Mickey’s Seating Though these spaces are quieter, they’re also further from the buffet — and potentially darker for those character photos. Seating Area Still, these rooms are potentially better for your group if you prefer (or require) a quieter space and less stimulation. Seating Area Table settings are simple, with silverware wrapped in blue napkins, the drink menu, and a seasoning caddy. Table Setting The caddy is cute, though. We’d totally use one of these at home. Table Setting The salt and pepper shakers are a lot of fun. They’re displayed like this. Pepper pants! Salty shoes! Sort of strange to shake seasoning from Mickey’s pants, but we’re here for it. Salt & Pepper They come apart like this, though, so they’re good for a laugh or two. (Guaranteed your kids will ask to help season your food which, if yours are like mine, you’re taking a risk.) Salt and Pepper The drink menu features some typical cocktails (think Magical Star Cocktail, Blue “Glow”-tini, Bahama Mama) and sangria. Nothing to write home about, but if you’re on the Disney Dining Plan, an alcoholic beverage is included for diners over 21. (There’s a Sparkling No-jito, too.) Drink Menu At the buffet, you’ll find the small plates, bowls, and large plates you need — plus additional silverware. These bowls are for the all-you-can-eat ice cream taps! Bowls and Small Plates We’re into those divided plates, we gotta say. They’re great for kids who might really like that separation. But if you’re sampling a bunch of flavors, you might want to use those, too. Keep my Mongolian Beef far away from my Baked Salmon, tyvm. Plates Eats Since I dined here for brunch, I had a wide selection of items from which to choose. At many Disney buffets, you’ll find the same items on both sides of the buffet, so it doesn’t matter which side to head to. But here, during brunch, you’ll find breakfast items on one side of the buffet, and lunch items on the other. And it all begins with carbs. Lots and lots of carbs. Check out this super cute Chef Mickey’s dough art to show you where the bread is! Chef Mickey’s — in Bread! Plain Bagels are ready for ya! You’ll find plenty of cream cheese options (and butter) on the buffet, too. Carbs Croissants and Cinnamon Rolls are available, too. And there’s a toaster should you want to heat up any of your breads. Toaster and more Carbs There are Glazed Donut Holes on the dessert buffet, which, even with everything else to eat, are hard to resist. Donut Holes The Assorted Pastries section over by the dessert buffet is packed with breakfast staples. Assorted Pastries Apple Cinnamon Muffins are sweet and breakfasty. Apple Cinnamon Muffins But Blueberry Muffins might be an even better selection for the kiddos. And the grown-ups. I mean, check out those sugar crystals. If they don’t scream “I’m going to Park ’til I drop after this — sugar me up!” I don’t know what does. Blueberry Muffins Simple Danishes are available alongside Chocolate Croissants. Danishes and Chocolate Croissants And Cherry Turnovers are ready to go. Turnovers Cinnamon Rolls at Chef Mickey’s aren’t glazed as per usual; they’re doused in caramel sauce. We don’t hate this approach. Back in the day, these used to be called “sticky mickeys!” Cinnamon Rolls These are pretty decent, but not so great that you should forego other eats for them. Cinnamon Roll There’s Fresh Fruit to accompany your breakfast, including pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon. Strawberry Yogurt and Greek Yogurt are available, too. Yogurt and Fruit The mini Mickey Waffle situation is super fun here. There are loads of toppings and a photo opp. Just you wait. Mickey (and Minnie!) Waffles with Toppings Mixed in with the typical Mickey Waffles are mini Minnie Waffles! So fun! Mickey and Minnie Waffles Sauces include Caramel, Chocolate, and Strawberry or Cherry. Sauces for Waffles There’s Maple Syrup, too, for the breakfast purists. Maple Syrup But if you wanna get funky, check out this spread! Toppings Whipped Cream awaits… Whipped Cream …Cherries add a bright pop of color… Cherries …Candy-Coated Chocolates (not branded M&Ms, but you get the drift) are a fun addition… Chocolate Candies …and Gummy Bears and Chocolate Gems add even more sugar and color! Gummy Bears and Chocolate Gems But we’re not done yet! There are also Sprinkles, Nerds, and more! And no: this is not an ice cream sundae bar; it’s all for the Mickey (and Minnie) Waffles! (Though the ice cream is right around the corner, so we won’t judge if you use it on that. Or, even better, add ice cream to your Mickey waffle and then go for the toppings!) Sprinkles, Candies, and more! And here’s why: a #MyMickeyWaffle photo opp, complete with a frame and a hashtag so not only can you share your waffle with the world, you can also see what the world has done to its waffles. It’s social media…for Mickey Waffles. Yes, the end of civilization is nigh (but in the meantime at least we’ve got waffles). Social Media Waffles! Phew! Now that you’ve got that Waffle snap, we can move on. To pancakes! Pancakes and Syrup And there are plenty of breakfast staples to be had — including a few options for eggs. Breakfast Staples Turkey Sausage is available. (Double check on the casing if you’re not eating pork or beef.) Turkey Sausage And French Toast Sticks are a great addition. Simple, easy, and kid-friendly. French Toast Sticks Standard Scrambled Eggs are, evidently, a very popular choice… and who doesn’t love an excuse to eat Tater Tots for breakfast? These were nice and crispy. Scrambled Eggs and Tater Tots Pork Sausage is also available. Pork Sausage And fairly crispy Bacon was available, too. (This ran out early in our meal, but it was replenished pretty quickly.) Bacon Western Eggs and Cheese & Bacon Eggs are available for a little twist on the classic. Egg Options Cheesy Potatoes and an Egg White Scramble provide some balance between heavy and light. We recommend some of each! The Cheesy Potatoes are a classic Chef Mickey’s choice. Potatoes and Eggs Breakfast Potatoes with peppers are available, too. This is as close as you’ll get to basic breakfast potatoes, so note that if you are peppers-averse, you might be better off with the tater tots. (They’re all vessels for ketchup, so we’re okay with that!) Breakfast Potatoes Biscuits and Gravy bring a little southern style to the buffet. Biscuits and Gravy There’s a carving station for all times of the day at Chef Mickey’s. For brunch, we saw Carved Ham. Carved Ham And there was (sadly quite dry) Carved Turkey, too. Those legs look pretty good, though! Carved Turkey There are two preparations of Salmon on the buffet. This is lox-style and comes with traditional accompaniments like capers and onions. Salmon and Accompaniments There are also Cream Cheeses — red pepper, dill, and classic — and two Jellies. Accompaniments Cold offerings include Boiled Eggs, Quinoa Salad, and Citrus Salad. (You can peep some fresh Grapes and Pineapple, too!) Cold Salads and Boiled Eggs And there’s a salad bar at brunch that includes plenty of standard options. Salad Bar Mixed Greens, Red Onions, and Black Olives stand at the ready for a healthy buffet option. Salad Greens and Toppings Dressings, Grape Tomatoes, and chopped Egg are available. Salad Toppings For seafood fans, Poached Shrimp with Cocktail Sauce and Lemon Wedges are a straightforward choice. Shrimp, Cocktail Sauce, and Lemon Wedges Brunch includes several items that are distinctly not breakfast foods. Sesame Ginger Tofu is a healthy plant-based offering with a lunch/dinner feel. Sesame Ginger Tofu Cornbread and Green Beans (crisp and unsoggy!). Corn Bread and Green Beans Other veggie options include Asparagus and some really excellent Street Corn. These are interesting buffet options. Neither is amazing, but they do offer some variety. Asparagus and Street Corn Cheese Tortellini Marinara is a pasta staple, and it was awesome. Tortellini Marinara And more shrimp! This time it’s combined with Grits. Shrimp and Grits There’s White Rice on hand if you need a good starch to serve as a base (or if you’ve got a picky eater!). White Rice The second salmon preparation is Baked with a layer of herby breadcrumbs. This is not the best salmon you’ve ever had, but it’s nice to have a second fish option (even if it’s the same species of fish…). Baked Salmon Chef Mickey’s also serving up Mongolian Beef. We spotted this on the 1900 Park Fare buffet recently (see the review here!), too, so it’s not super-creative, but it is popular. Mongolian Beef There’s a kids’ buffet section at Chef Mickey’s as well, and anyone of any age is welcome to select from these items. And since there are Chicken Tenders, you’ll definitely want to hit this up. Chicken Nuggets There’s a simple Corn presentation, too. If you’re a fan of corn straight out of a can, you’ll recognize this. Corn And more Tater Tots! Frankly, we’re cool with this because we love a good tot. Tater Tots Macaroni and Cheese made with cavatappi pasta was really cheesy and tasty on our visit. Mickey Mac and Cheese And to finish off any of the buffet items you select, there’s Whipped Butter, Ketchup, Honey Mustard, and BBQ Sauce. Butter and Condiments If you dine at Chef Mickey’s for brunch or dinner, the mouse churns out several dessert options. Desserts Simple items include Chocolate Chip Cookies. Lots and lots of chocolate chip cookies. Chocolate Chip Cookies There are also Rice Krispie Treats. We’re not saying you must go over to the waffle station for some chocolate sauce for these babies, but we’re also not saying it’s a bad idea. Rice Krispie Treats The Magic Bar Blondies combine all the great flavors of magic bars (think coconut, butterscotch, and chocolate chips) in a blonde preparation that tops off the bar with a butterscotch-y frosting and a couple dollops of thick chocolate ganache. These were SO SO good. Magic Bar Blondie Another fun option: Cookie Dough Cannolis! Before you ask: yes, these are as amazing as they sound. Yes, you should get one. For each hand. And a couple for later. Seriously, seriously delicious for you edible cookie dough fans! Cookie Dough Cannoli Mango Panna Cotta has a traditional panna cotta jiggle. We’re not fans of “milk jello,” but the flavor combo of mango and tart berries is a good one. Mango Panna Cotta Mixed Berry Cake is a thin layer of fruity sponge cake and a thick berry mousse on top. This was sort of similar in texture to the panna cotta, so not our favorite. Mixed Berry Cake But chocolate-frosted Brownies are always a good idea. Sometimes it’s the simple things in life. Brownies Mickey Domes are a combo of Oreo and chocolate mousse. These aren’t done amazingly well; you can see the domes are essentially separate from the Oreos entirely. But the flavor and textures are fine. Mickey Domes Characters The real stars of the Chef Mickey’s show is the characters who circulate through the restaurant and stop to chat (and pose!) with their fans. Mickey and Goofy Mickey looks great in his chef’s outfit, including a hat, scarf, jacket, and apron. Mickey Mouse Donald is smart in his chef’s coat and scarf, too. Donald Duck Goofy’s rocking some orange and light blue… Goofy …and he’s always ready with his signature pose. With ears like those, who could blame him? Goofy Minnie Mouse is delighted we came. We’re delighted to see you, too, Min! Minnie Mouse And finally, Pluto can’t contain his excitement! Pluto If you look closely, you’ll see Pluto’s dog tag is even customized for the restaurant! Pluto’s Dog Tag Frying pans! Who knew?! Nosh or Not? Grab a plate at Chef Mickey’s if: You want that classic Disney World experience of dining with the Fab Five in an original Resort. You like the food served at Chef Mickey’s, and the variety means everyone in your group will find something to eat. You’ve always wanted to dine in the shadow of the Monorail, and you like the idea of knocking out a character meal at the same time. Glide on to the next character meal if: Characters are fun and all, but you need some reliably excellent food, too. You don’t care for buffet dining. The atmosphere of the Contemporary really isn’t your thing. The noise and craziness of Chef Mickey’s isn’t something your family can — or wants to — handle Overall Chef Mickey’s is a quintessential Walt Disney World experience, and as such, it’s a compelling meal. Meeting the Fab Five in their chef gear is really fun, and if your kids are one-and-done meeting them, you might get the added bonus of not having to wait to see them elsewhere. And really, the characters are the thing here. You’re not booking Chef Mickey’s for the food or the decor; it’s all about Chef Mickey and his pals. But the location is also relatively convenient, so if you’re looking for a character meal in proximity to Magic Kingdom or if you’re staying at the Contemporary or another Monorail resort, it might make a lot of sense for you to dine here. But you’ll need to manage your expectations if you prefer finer — or quieter — dining experiences because this is not that. Still, it’s fun, it’s rowdy, it’s quintessential Disney, and you’ve probably got to try it at least once. Late breakfast is a great time to go (think 10:45 – 11AM arrival time) because you’ll get the breakfast favorites (and pricing) but also have access to brunch items when they come out around 11:15. And eating a late breakfast that flows into lunch might mean you can skip that mid-day meal and save a little money (or DDP credits!) by grabbing only two meals that day rather than three. But whatever time you dine, Chef Mickey will be there for you, wearing his chef whites and stirring the pot of fun in the dining room. JD McCrary is the kind of kid who would make you feel awful about your own lack of talent, achievements and charisma if he wasn’t so darn cool. At just 11 years old, JD holds the distinction of being the youngest recording artist ever to sign with Disney Music Group’s Hollywood Records label, and today, he hits the big screen as the voice of young Simba in director Jon Favreau’s photorealistic adaptation of “The Lion King.” Add a starring role on television (in Tyler Perry’s “The Paynes”) and dance moves we haven’t seen since a young Michael Jackson first floated across a stage, and you have a body of work that already dwarfs those of most people twice (or, in my case, more than four times) his age. I had the pleasure of sailing with JD and his family aboard the most recent Disney Vacation Club Member Cruise, and he shared with me – and our camera crew – how excited he is to be part of “The Lion King” legacy and what he hopes to add to his already sterling resume in the years ahead. Check out that conversation here, look for “The Lion King” soundtrack in stores and on digital-download platforms, and catch “The Lion King” in theatres now. View the full article

Have you had a chance to visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom and check out all the fun happening at Donald’s Dino-Bash! in DinoLand, U.S.A.? It’s become one of my family’s favorite spots in the park, especially with the chance to meet up with awesome characters like Scrooge McDuck and Launchpad McQuack from “DuckTales!” This special, land-wide celebration is hosted by Donald Duck, in honor of his realization that ducks are actually descendants of dinosaurs. Throughout the day, you can meet Donald at the Welcome Center, and be on the lookout for Daisy, Pluto and Goofy, too! Chip ‘n Dale are there, dressed in the cutest dinosaur outfits you’ve ever seen, and in the evening they head over by Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama for a Dino-Riffic Dance Party. I’ve just learned that our friends at Disney Parks Merchandise are introducing adorable new plush versions of Donald in his official Dino-Bash! outfit and Chip ‘n Dale in their dinosaur suits. Best of all, Chip ‘n Dale come as a set, holding hands. How cute is that?! They’ll be available starting today at Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures and Dino-Rama Cart. Looks like I’ll be planning another trip out to the park to pick these up for myself. Of course, this summer is the perfect time to head back to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The park is alive with the magic of all-new experiences like the Hakuna Matata Time Dance Party, the park-wide celebration of “The Lion King,” adventures with Kevin from “UP!” and the recently-updated “Rivers of Light: We Are One.” Who else is going? Will I see you out there? View the full article

Many fans consider Disney World “The Most Magical Place on Earth.” We think that’s in large part due to wonderful Cast Members in the parks, resorts, and Disney Springs. Smiling Cast Members at Amorette’s Patisserie In honor of Cast Member Appreciation Days from July 18th through July 21st, Amorette’s Patisserie in Disney Springs is serving up a Cast Member-Exclusive Mousse! This chocolate chiffon cake is filled with Bailey’s mousse, salted caramel, and crispy dark chocolate pearls. The outside is covered in a glittery blue fondant, ring of pink fondant, a fondant Cast Member nametag, and topped with two circular chocolate ears. Cast Member Mousse Out of all the mousses we’ve at Amorette’s so far — yes, even that incredible Blood Orange Mousse — this is the best we’ve had yet! The Bailey’s mousse was heavenly and extremely fresh. The chocolate was so creamy that its lovely taste stayed in our mouths after we finished the dessert. The salted caramel flavor was faint, but we could still taste a hint of it throughout each bite. Cast Member Mousse We only wished there had been more of the chiffon cake layer because it was delightfully light compared to the rich mousse. Since the cake and mousse were both extremely soft, the crispy chocolate pearls balanced the texture with a well-needed crunch. Cast Member Mousse Unfortunately, the adorable chocolate ear on top of the mousse melted in the Florida heat. We definitely recommend enjoying this dessert inside, if at all possible! Cast Member Mousse If you’re a Cast Member, you can try the mousse at Amorette’s Patisserie for $8 (before the 20% Cast Member discount) through July 21st. Be sure to show your ID when you order it! Buckle your seat belts and get ready for the ride of a lifetime. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland park will transport you to a galaxy far, far away. While on the planet Batuu, you may spot some iconic starships and vehicles up-close. Here’s what you may encounter: A-wing Starfighter With its sleek arrowhead shape, streamlined cockpit and massive twin engines, the A-wing suggests raw speed. Used first by the Rebel Alliance and now the Resistance, it is well suited for quick strikes. You can find the A-Wing Starfighter at the Resistance encampment. First Order TIE echelon A new assault vehicle in the TIE (twin ion engine) series, this echelon shuttle is used by the First Order mainly for small troop and cargo transport. Come see this starship at the First Order Cargo area. Landspeeders There are two models of speeders in for repairs in the garage at Black Spire Station: a X-34 model like the one Luke Skywalker used on Tatooine, and a Jakku speeder, built from scavenged parts. Millennium Falcon Once flown by iconic smuggler Han Solo and his Wookiee first mate, Chewbacca, and more recently by Rey, the Millennium Falcon is sometimes lovingly referred to as “the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.” The YT-1300 Corellian freighter is located at the Spaceport and is currently being loaned to Hondo Ohnaka, the former pirate who owns and operates Ohnaka Transport Solutions. Sienar-Chall Utilipede Transport Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs uses this modified shuttle as a mobile kitchen and restaurant, jumping from one planet to the next as a “traveling diner for diners traveling.” It is currently atop Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo in Black Spire Outpost. X-wing Starfighter A versatile ship balancing speed and firepower, the X-wing is a nimble starfighter used in dogfights first by the Rebel Alliance and now the Resistance. Its name comes from the “X” its four wings create when they’re locked in attack position. Take a closer look at the X-wing Starfighter at the Resistance encampment. Whether you’re part of the Resistance or supporting the First Order, activate your hyper drive and head on over to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge! View the full article

BaseLine Tap House, located in Hollywood Studios’ Grand Avenue section, is a nice place to stop for a quick bite or refreshing drink. BaseLine Tap House While we love creating our own beer flights, we enjoy the restaurant’s food offerings as well! We’ve previously had both sweet and salty items at Baseline, and this time we decided to go for something a little more savory (and juicy!). We’re still waiting for the triumphant return of the Exotic Margarita… But, we’re not here to talk about their wine or beer today, friends! The Coffee-Rubbed Rib-Eye Steak Puff has been calling our name. This item first debuted back in early 2018, and it was listed on the menu when we recently visited Hollywood Studios. Coffee-Rubbed Rib-Eye Steak Puff Sign The puff pastry itself is a reason to grab this small bite. The bread was similar to a buttery croissant that flakes apart as soon as your fork hits it. Our mouths are still watering, you guys. The steak inside was nice and tender, topped with some of BaseLine’s delicious cheese. You all know how much we love cheese. Every bite of the Coffee-Rubbed Rib-Eye Steak Puff was filled with ooey, gooey goodness! The olive salad that came with the meal, on the other hand, was not our favorite. While this could be a great side dish for olive lovers, we personally weren’t very keen on the taste. We also would have liked a hint of more coffee in the steak puff, since it was almost non-existent. The juicy flavors absolutely made up for the lack of coffee, though! The Olive Salad Side with the Steak Puff Regardless of how delicious this dish was, the $11 price tag seemed a bit steep for a small puff pastry and olive salad. While we think that you should try this eventually (especially if you love steak and olives), there are other fantastic (and bigger!) meals that you can get around Hollywood Studios. Perhaps you might want to try the Pot Roast at ABC Commissary! Have you tried the Coffee-Rubbed Rib-Eye Steak Puff? Let us know in the comments below! Well, folks, the live-action version of The Lion King is officially in theatres! Tree of Life And in celebration, Disney has released a bunch of new Lion King stuff around Disney’s Animal Kingdom, including a brand-new Dooney & Bourke collection! So, follow along with us today as we explore all of the new Lion King items throughout the park! Disney was so kind as to invite us to a media event to celebrate the BIG day! Animal Kingdom Media Event We kicked off the day by adventuring into Africa to ride Disney’s Kilimanjaro Safaris. Africa Entrance Fun fact — the Disney Conservation Fund will be donating $2 to help save the lions for each person who rides this attraction from July 19th through July 25th. Read more about Disney’s Conservation efforts and this limited-time offer here! Kilimanjaro Safaris While on the ride, we learned that the animators for The Lion King went on an African safari to gain inspiration for the new film. They were astonished by the wildebeests and spent a great deal of time rendering and capturing their movements. We also learned that you’ll more likely spot the lions while riding Kilimanjaro Safaris during the morning or evening as opposed to the middle of the day. Kilimanjaro Safaris Lions After our incredible safari, we hopped on the Wildlife Express Train and ventured to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Wildlife Express Train This location closed last year and has recently reopened with a new animation opportunity. Rafiki’s Planet Watch First, we watched a video about Dakari, an African lion. This is actually how all of the new Animation Experiences begin now. Guests get to watch a movie about the animal they will draw, which is a ton of fun! Dakari Film Since it’s Lion King day, we had the opportunity to draw Simba! Simba Drawing Lesson Our animator made sure to point out that Simba’s nose is curved because he is not a villain. Therefore, his nose should not be drawn with sharp edges or points. The animators save all the sharp edges for the villains! Simba! Next, we checked out the new Dooney & Bourke Lion King Collection. This collection features a new print with Simba, Nala, Timon, and Pumbaa. Dooney & Bourke Lion King As far as we know, these bags are only sold at Mombasa Marketplace and Discovery Trading Company in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Get a closer look at the new Lion King collection here! Did you know that beginning today, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is offering a new Lion King scavenger hunt activity throughout the park? Well, they are! You can purchase the map for $6.99. When you’re finished, you can turn in the map for a really awesome prize! Lion King Scavenger Hunt Our prize was a magnet! Each one will be a little different, due to the fact they are created on wood. Scavenger Hunt Magnets The characters that we hunted for were pretty hard to spot since they blend into their surroundings so well! Zazu! We also received a little Lion King activity packet. Activity Packet Looking to get your face painted? Well, if you head over to the Harambe Market Face Painting Kiosk, you’ll find that they have a Lion Paw Prints face paint option for $16.00. You can complete the look with The Lion King Minnie Ears. Face Painting The new limited edition Lion King MagicBand can be found at Mombasa Marketplace for $34.99. We’re not gonna lie…we’re pretty fond of Mobile Order. Mobile Order It allows us to order our food at certain dining locations around Disney World and the Disneyland Resort in advance. And it often lets us skip those lengthy Quick Service lines. We are allll about bypassing those Aloha Isle lines in Magic Kingdom. Recently a few more locations at Disney World and Disneyland Resort have been added to the Mobile Order Restaurant list — which you can see here! Mobile Order is super simple to use and you may access it by opening your My Disney Experience App. It allows guests to pre-order and pre-pay for their food at participating Counter Service Restaurants. Once you arrive at the location you choose, you will bypass the standard ordering queue and go straight to a Mobile Order Pick Up Counter to get your food! Mobile Order Pick Up Window Guests are able to pay with a debit/credit card or with their Disney Dining Plan credits (WDW only)! Some locations even offer menu items that can only be found on Mobile Order. Check out the secret menu items here! Visit our Mobile Order page for a step-by-step guide on how to use Mobile Order!! The World Premiere Food Court has recently been added to Mobile Order in Walt Disney World. This Quick Service location is located at Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort. They offer fun food options like the Forky Cupcake and Edible Cookie Dough. Along with more standard meal options like burgers, pasta, pizza, and more. Forky in the Toy Story section of All-Star Movies! A few other locations now offer Mobile Order at Disneyland Resort. This includes Schmoozies in Disney California Adventure, which serves delicious smoothie and drink options. One of our more recent favorites on the menu is the Mangonada Smoothie. Schmoozies! White Water Snacks has been available on Mobile Order previously, but we wanted to point out that the location has a new name, GCH Craftsman Grill. So, when searching for White Water snacks on Mobile Order, you’ll want to look out for GCH Craftsman Grill instead. Pacific Wharf has been offered on Mobile Order before. But recently, Pacific Wharf Distribution Co. (which sells pretzels and beer) has been added to the Mobile Order lineup. Rita’s Baja Blenders, which sells margaritas in Disney California Adventure, has been added as well. Rita’s Baja Blenders And don’t forget that Mobile Order is currently offered at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, Milk Stand, and Ronto Roasters in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland. Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo We’re anticipating and hoping that Mobile Order may be offered in Disney’s Hollywood Studios once Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens on August 29th. We’ll keep you updated as more restaurants are added to Disney’s Mobile Order system! Do you use Mobile Order? If so, where? Let us know in the comments below! Inspired by the picturesque beauty of an African wildlife reserve, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is known for its African architecture and design with its beautiful hand-carved furnishings, rich wood, and vibrant colors. Adding another layer of authenticity to this African experience are the engaging Cultural Representatives. Traveling from various African countries, they participate in a special one-year program allowing them to share insight into their culture with guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. These Cultural Representatives play a role in the Sense of Africa and Wanyama Safari tours where they immerse guests in the diverse cultures of the African continent through personal stories. They also have a prominent presence in our restaurants at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. At each of the three table-service restaurants (Jiko-The Cooking Place, Boma-Flavors of Africa, and Sanaa) they welcome guests and escort parties to their tables, captivating everyone with their warm personalities and genuine smiles. Some Cultural Representatives have roles in the kitchens, adding their African culinary expertise to the menus. We recently had an opportunity to sit down with four of our Food & Beverage Cultural Representatives. They are all incredibly interesting, personable, and truly embody the spirit of Africa. Boma – Flavors of Africa Greeter Yvonne Bahlangene from Harare, Zimbabwe Why did you want to become a Cultural Representative at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge? To share my African experience with others. I love sharing my culture, wildlife experiences, food, and the lifestyle of living in the villages as well as the vibrant city of Harare. What was your work experience in Africa? I worked at a photographic safari camp where we catered to visitors from all over the world. My main job was to share stories about our people, culture, food, and tradition. It is very similar to what I do here at Disney, which I am grateful to continue doing for our guests. What surprised you the most when you first came to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge? I was surprised by how the lodge was built with such an amazing African feel. Everywhere you look in the resort there is a story to be told. The architecture, artwork, colors, décor, and restaurant themes all made me reminisce of being home! When talking to guests, is there a question you get asked repeatedly? The number one question I am asked is, “Where did you learn English?” We grew up learning English in school and it is also the language of business back home. Which Disney character would your family and friends say you are most like and why? Simba from ‘The Lion King!’ This is an easy one for me. It may sound cliché I picked a character from a story set in Africa, however, as a cub Simba was playful, naughty, and curious about what was on the other side which I can definitely relate to. When I was growing up in the village I did not want to be left out. I was the shortest, youngest, and loudest in the family. I must admit I found myself in a lot of trouble just like Simba. Favorite animal on the savanna and why? My favorite animal would be the zebra. The zebra is our Family Totem. Back home most families have an animal is passed down from generation to generation which they guard and protect. Jiko – The Cooking Place Greeter Hloniphani Dube from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe Why did you want to become a Cultural Representative at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge? I always had a desire to be in an environment where I could learn about different cultures and be in the presence of those who will take an interest in listening, learning, and would appreciate knowing about my own culture. What was your work experience in Africa? I worked for a rental car company as a rental sales agent, chauffeur, and tour guide. Favorite memory at Jiko -The Cooking Place? My favorite memory is when I took a guest and her daughter to a table and shared stories of African animals and my homeland. I found out it was the guest’s 80th birthday so we got her a birthday button and a card signed by all the Cast Members. After their dining experience, Valarie, the daughter, came to me and told me how much she appreciated what I had done for her mother. A month later the family came back for a holiday dinner at Boma – Flavors of Africa. The family took the time to come find me at Jiko to express their appreciation for something I had done a month prior. This really touched me and made me realize how doing something so simple can make someone’s day magical. Favorite dish at Jiko-The Cooking Place Botswana Short Rib because of its familiar taste and wonderful aroma. Favorite animal in the savanna and why? The impala because of their parenting nature. They have the ability to prolong giving birth if there is a predator close by. Sanaa Greeter Marvelous Bonasi from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Why did you want to become a Cultural Representative at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge? I love interacting with people and thought it would be a great way to share my culture with others and the perfect opportunity to learn the cultures of others. I recognized the fact people from all over the world make Walt Disney World a destination. What was your work experience in Africa? I was a coordinator and co-founder for a youth academy. I helped coach young people with soccer and helped as a mentor. This was all voluntary work. What surprised you the most when you first came to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge? The animals! I had heard about a restaurant with animals right outside the windows but I thought guests would have to go out of their way to actually see them – especially African animals! When I arrived at Sanaa I was shocked to see the animals just a stone’s throw from the restaurant. When talking to guests, is there a question you get asked repeatedly? “Is your name really Marvelous?” And IT IS! My dad thought I was going to be a girl because our family already had three boys. My dad was still hoping for a boy and when I arrived – my dad said, “This is Marvelous!” Which Disney character would your family and friends say you are most like and why? I am like Timon – because I am hilarious – if I say so myself! People say I have an infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humor. And, like Timon, I am funny and small! The Mara Culinary Cultural Representative Phumlani David Thabethe from Durban, South Africa Why did you want to become a Cultural Representative at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge? I wanted to represent my culture and traditions in the kitchen and gain culinary experience in an internationally-recognized company. What was your work experience in Africa? I was working as a pastry chef at a game reserve lodge. What surprised you the most when you first came to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge? I was surprised about the food served in the restaurants. The food is authentically African – including the names of the dishes! Favorite dish at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and why? My favorite dish is a Butter Chicken Curry from Sanaa. It is my favorite because the dish is made with the same spices we use back home which makes it smell and taste like what we serve in Africa. When talking to guests, is there a question you get asked repeatedly? “Is this the food we eat in Africa?” The answer is “yes!” Which Disney character would your family and friends say you are most like and why? Winnie the Pooh because I am a sweet and humble individual and I have a sweet tooth! A reminder you don’t need to stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge to dine at any of these wonderful restaurants or partake in any of the special dining events such as “The Lion King” Limited-Time Dining Experience at Jiko-The Cooking Place. Visit the Walt Disney World Resort website or call 407 WDW-DINE (407 939-3463) to learn more about the restaurants and their offerings or to make reservations and meet Yvonne, Hloniphani, Marvelous, Phumlani, and all the other Cultural Representatives.
