Spicy City Dog This hot dog was AMAZING! From the first to the last bite, we tasted a mild, spicy kick. Each flavor from the creamy cheese to the pico de gallo was delicious. 5. There may have only been a 1 in 14 million chance of defeating Thanos, but we tried our fourth Infinity Stone Churro in Disney California Adventure! New California Adventure Park Maps We’ve tried the orange Soul Stone Churro, the purple Power Stone Churro, and the red Reality Stone Churro. Now, we’re here to tell you about the Time Stone Churro! Time Stone Churro Sign To fit the green glow of the Time Stone, the churro is decked out with green apple sugar, icing, and green rock candy. Time Stone Churro The green apple-flavoring was definitely apparent with each bite. However, the flavor was obvious only because the taste seemed extremely artificial. This made the treat difficult to finish (and we can typically eat churros in a SNAP!). Time Stone Churro If you still want to give this churro a chance, you can purchase it for $5.75 at the Churro Cart in Hollywood Land. We can’t promise that you won’t turn into Hulk once you eat this super green dessert, though! Time Stone Churro Check out what’s in store for our favorite Marvel heroes here! 7. Since the announcement that Disney Springs’ West Side would be getting a City Works Eatery & Pour House, we’ve been eagerly awaiting more information about the franchise’s American-style eats and dozens of craft beers. (Click here for the original announcement!) City Works construction City Works currently operates seven locations throughout the country, and many of the chain’s signature menu items are replicated in multiple locations. So we visited one such locale to sample some of the eats that might be coming to the Disney Springs location. Note that the menu has not been announced for Disney Springs at press time, but since so many of the menus around the country feature the same items, we’re guessing some of them will come to Disney World as well! Here’s our menu preview — complete with some tantalizing food photos that will make you impatient for this spot to open its doors this summer! Atmosphere We haven’t been inside the Disney Springs City Works location, but the other City Works locations are relaxed and welcoming. We expect Disney Springs will bring more of the same. City Works Dining Room Preview Seating at the City Works we visited includes long banquettes, padded chairs, and tables in shades of light brown that verge on bronze or copper at times. Disney World has announced that its location will have “plenty of indoor seating [and] a large outdoor patio,” but the specifics of the interior and exterior design remain to be seen. City Works Bar Preview The centerpiece of the restaurant space is a long bar, and because City Works is a “pour house,” we anticipate the Disney Springs location will likewise feature at least one bar with seating and space for beer tap after beer tap after beer tap. (More of these in a bit!) City Works Bar Preview Disney has announced that their City Works will have “gigantic high-definition TVs and state-of-the-art A/V (audio/visual)” so diners will never miss a goal, a touchdown, homerun, an ace — whatever the sporting event may be! City Works Bar Preview Eats City Works offers similar menus in all of the chain’s locations, including the showcase: tons of beers on tap. City Works Eatery & Pour House in Disney Springs will feature “90+ local and global varieties of beer on tap” — all the better to wash down a burger and some fries if you ask us! Drink Menu from the City Works Location We Visited At the location we previewed, beers are displayed on one wall of the restaurant and are categorized into Wheats, Belgians, Pale Ales and IPAs, Ciders, Stouts and Porters, Macro-Brews, Strong and Imperial Brews, Fruited and Sours, Lighter Lagers, and Rotating. Beers Listed on Wall If you think this is intense (it is!), be sure to talk to your server about what you should choose. Beer Wall We’re excited to see what local beer offerings the Disney Springs location will serve as we do tend to see some local breweries featured at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival as well as the Swan & Dolphin Food and Wine Classic. Beer Wall To absorb all those tasty brews, City Works serves “classic American food with chef-driven twists.” At this location (and the others) this translates into appetizers for one, shareable apps, burgers, salads, entrees, desserts, and more. (We kind of dug the original EPCOT Center font on this menu.) City Works Menu Preview We tried, you know, a few things. As we do. Even when we’re not at Disney and we’re just jonesing to preview some potential forthcoming eats. City Works Preview From Bar Bites we went for two crowd pleasers that we’re hoping will appear on the Disney Springs’ City Works menu: Pretzel Bites and Cheese Curds. These aren’t listed under “To Share,” but you’ll likely want to. These are some healthy portion sizes. (Maybe that’s the American twist…) Appetizers at City Works (Preview) We do love a Pretzel Bite (we’ve been dunking Pretzel Bread into Cheddar Cheese Soup at Le Cellier for the better part of a decade, eh!), and these come with a cup of really rich and flavorful Gouda Cheese Sauce! Pretzel Bites with Gouda Cheese Sauce The Bites themselves are deep brown and slightly crunchy on the outside (with a generous sprinkling of salt!). Pretzel Bites with Gouda Cheese Sauce Inside: pillowy carb pretzel heaven. It does seem to be begging for some cheese sauce, though… Pretzel Bites with Gouda Cheese Sauce Who are we to deny a Pretzel Bite a savory little dunk into some cheese sauce? In you go! Pretzel Bites with Gouda Cheese Sauce These are super satisfying to eat, and while we already mentioned that you might choose to share these, honestly, they’re easy to eat, and you might plow through more of them you think! Still, if the Pretzel Bites are available at the Disney Springs location, try to save room for the entree round. Pretzel Bites with Gouda Cheese Sauce In addition to ball of carbohydrates, the menu we previewed also offers fried Cheese Curds!!! (These require three exclamation points.) These were marked as a City Works “house favorite,” which I’m guessing means it’s likely we’ll see this coming to Disney Springs. Cheese Curds with Smoked Tomato Coulis These are cheddar cheese curds fried in cornmeal batter. If they or something like them make the cut in Florida, don’t hesitate: order the fried cheese. Cheese Curds with Smoked Tomato Coulis The batter was relatively light, especially considering that they’re filled with ooey, gooey melted cheddar cheese curds! Cheese Curds with Smoked Tomato Coulis And the cheese pull? Cheese Curds with Smoked Tomato Coulis The Smoked Tomato Coulis was a slight twist on tomato sauce and was a good accompaniment, but I’m not a huge fan of the “smoked” flavor trend around at the moment, so I wasn’t loving the sauce. Cheese Curds with Smoked Tomato Coulis Again, you might want to share the Cheese Curds because they’re FRIED CHEESE CURDS and will weigh you down. But if you horde them for yourself, we will not judge. On the To Share part of this restaurant’s menu, we opted for Buffalo Chicken Dip. This is a large portion of dip with a generous helping of sturdy tortilla chips. Buffalo Chicken Dip The Buffalo Chicken Dip we previewed is a combo of pulled Buffalo chicken, bleu cheese cream, and housemade giardiniera (marinated vegetables). The City Works location we visited noted that this app is gluten free. Buffalo Chicken Dip We typically enjoy Buffalo chicken of any type (although it’s rarely spicy enough for us!), and we’ve even had Buffalo chicken dip elsewhere in Walt Disney World (we’ve spotted it at the Restaurantosaurus Lounge in Animal Kingdom). But this incarnation was served up warm — and what a difference that makes! This was flavorful and creamy, and there really wasn’t too much spice to it at all. So no worries if you’re spice-averse. Buffalo Chicken Dip Our first entree is a classic beer buddy: the Smokehouse Burger. The Smokehouse Burger starts with a patty comprised of a brisket/short rib mix, and it’s further topped with slices of braised short rib! Smokehouse Burger Other toppings include smoked provolone, BBQ bacon onion relish (!!), Carolina mustard BBQ sauce, and crispy buttermilk onion strings. Smokehouse Burger This burger is super savory; the only sweetness comes from the BBQ bacon onion relish, but its sweet impact is very mild in relation to the other ingredients. The vinegar-y Carolina mustard BBQ sauce is a delicious addition that adds a hit of contrasting acidity. Smokehouse Burger It’s messy. It’s heavy. It’s totally awesome, and we want another one right now. Sadly the fries were meh, but dip ’em in that leftover gouda cheese sauce from the pretzel bites and they get a lot better. Smokehouse Burger But if you can believe it, the next entree we previewed really gives the Smokehouse Burger a run for its money. These are Filet Mignon Sliders! Filet Mignon Sliders Served on pretzel rolls (rather than the brioche of the Smokehouse Burger), this duo of sliders is delicious. These are two grilled filet medallions seasoned so well and topped with caramelized onions and a generous portion of horseradish cream. Filet Mignon Sliders Did we mention these are delicious? They are. The horseradish cream is a classic steak accompaniment, and it really works here to cut through some of the richness brought by the filets. You can’t go wrong with the Filet Mignon Sliders if they appear on the Disney Springs menu. Which we sincerely hope is the case. (Pretty please with a pretzel roll on top?) Note that these were also a “house favorite” as indicated on the menu, so fingers crossed! Filet Mignon Sliders Of the plated entrees we considered at this City Works location, we opted for the Pork Chop. This classic American dish really does get a chef-y twist here with some stellar chipotle-maple glaze. (Chipotle and maple, you ask, how can this work? But it so does!) Pork Chop In addition to the glaze (like, who needs anything else, but bear with us…) is savory potato puree, cinnamon spiced apples, and buttermilk onion rings. The meat itself is a 10-ounce bone-in center cut pork chop, so this really isn’t for the faint of heart. Pork Chop Unfortunately the Pork Chop we previewed was slightly over-cooked and tough (a common issue with pork in restaurants since it usually needs to be cooked to a higher internal temperature), but… we forgive this mild sin because when we got a perfect bite with a little bit of everything, the richness and balance of flavors were truly redemptive. Pork Chop For dessert, we went with a peanut butter and chocolate combination, as we are often wont to do. This time it’s Peanut Butter Snickers Pie. And before we move onto the components, we just need to give an enthusiastic shout-out to the salted caramel sauce on the plate. This, our friends, is not just decorative. You’re going to want some of it in every bite! Peanut Butter Snickers Pie The other components include some real superstars, too: Oreo cookie crust, a not-too-thin peanut butter mousse, whipped cream, and chopped Snickers. It’s possible that we’ve never met a PB&C dessert we didn’t at least want to be pals with, but this peanut butter mousse? Yeah, we want this in our lives as often as possible. Peanut Butter Snickers Pie The chopped Snickers helps to drive home that candy bar feel, but the peanut butter mousse and salted caramel sauce really dominate the dessert. And that’s a-okay with us because YUM. And that Oreo cookie crust was a big benefit in flavor (a tiny bit of salt) and texture, so get a bit of that in every bite if you can, too. Peanut Butter Snickers Pie We wouldn’t be mad if the Disney Springs location included this on the menu, either. Are you seeing a trend here? Overall Obviously we haven’t been inside the Disney Springs City Works location yet, but based on our experience at this chain location, we’re really looking forward to the opening later this summer! The food was terrific, hearty, satisfying, and (as expected) perfect to pair with some craft brews. The atmosphere seems like a good fit for Disney Springs as well, with a laid-back and relaxed vibe that makes it a great place to head with the fam. Plus, with all those big screens comin’ in hot, it may become a go-to spot to catch sporting events while you’re on vacation. So stay tuned as we keep you updated on the progress of City Works (we’re always strolling by during our Disney Springs What’s New walks!) and take you inside just as soon as the doors open to diners! Have you tried a City Works near you? Let us know what you thought in the comments! Any dishes you hope appear on the Disney Springs menu? 9. Spooky season is just around the corner and with Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party getting a few NEW additions this year, we honestly cannot wait to check it out!! Boo-To-You I mean there’s going to be a new fireworks show called Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spooktacular, and a new interactive trick or treat experience at Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor. BUT that’s not all!! Disney has just announced a few new additions to Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade! Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade is really not so scary, just like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. This is because the offerings at both the party and during the parade are very family-friendly. Boo-To-You If you’ve seen Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade before, then it may just be one of your TOP most adored Disney parades (it’s mine hands down…sorry Festival of Fantasy)! But, this year, the parade maybe even better than in past years. NEW floats and characters are being added! We’ve had to beware of hitchhiking ghosts, grave diggers, and Haunted Mansion Ballroom Dancers for a while now! But this year, you’ll also need to beware of the spectral Bride who will glide down Main Street U.S.A. along with the Haunted Mansion ballroom dancers. Gosh, the thought of seeing her gives me hot and cold running chills. I cannot wait, can you? Boo-To-You But that’s not all that’s new to Boo-To-You this year as there will also be a new Tomorrowland parade unit! That’s right, The Incredibles and Edna Mode are joining the parade! Buzz Lightyear and the Aliens from Toy Story are joining as well. They will be searching for crystalline treasures on the surface of a planetary playset float. ©Disney And all of our favorites like Vanellope, Ralph, Mickey, Minnie, and a few Disney villains will be returning. Boo-To-You We cannot wait to get our spook on at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary this year. Tickets are already on sale and the parties begin on August 16th. Can you believe it? 11. Day two and we are completely switching gears on this Disney vacation series…let’s talk about taking the entire family to the Walt Disney World Resort. Mom, dad, kids, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and in-laws. You get the picture and that picture may seem daunting, but again the Disney Parks Moms Panelists are here to help you plan a Disney vacation that will meet and exceed everyone’s expectations! Tip #1 Plan a family meeting! With a wide range of ages in your party, it’s important to sit down and get input from everyone on what they would enjoy doing on their Disney vacation. While the more adventurous teens might be planning a day filled with Space Mountain and Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain; the grandparents might be thinking more along the lines of a few great shows and then back to the resort for an afternoon rest. No problem, and according to Donyell these pre-planning strategies have actually saved their family trips to Disney! Tip #2 Ready, Set, Go! You’ve got the plan and now it’s time to put it into action. But wait! Everyone has selected a different park. The panelists all agree this actually can be a blessing in disguise. Let everyone go where they like. Enjoy the day whether it is filled with entertainment or Mickey Premium Ice Cream bars and then reconvene for dinner that evening. Angie G. encourages families not to be afraid to split up. She reminds guests that you have all come together on this magical vacation and it’s important that everyone leaves with their own special memories that will last a lifetime! Tip #3 Don’t forget to capture the memories! This may be a rare opportunity to have your entire family at one location. 12. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is already a must-do experience every fall at Magic Kingdom Park, and it’s even more so this year with the debut of the incredible new “Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular,” a new interactive treat trail at Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor and attractions updated with new Halloween twists. Now, we’re excited to announce even more to look forward to with some great additions to “Mickey’s Boo to You Halloween Parade!” Presented twice nightly during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (Pro tip: catch the second run of the night for the best viewing options), the parade brings forth a cavalcade of fiendishly fun floats as each land of the Magic Kingdom comes together to celebrate Halloween. The parade opens with a flurry of favorite Disney friends, including Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in all-new Halloween costumes, as they trick-or-treat down Main Street, U.S.A. Representing Liberty Square, the Haunted Mansion unit features Hitchhiking Ghosts and a new addition, the spectral Bride, who glides among the waltzing spirits. A new Tomorrowland unit brings The Incredibles and designer extraordinaire Edna Mode to “Mickey’s Boo to You Halloween Parade,” followed by Buzz Lightyear and Alien explorers discovering crystalline treasures on the surface of a planetary playset float. Of course, no Halloween parade would be complete without candy. Wreck-It Ralph, Vanellope von Schweetz and the girls from Sugar Rush make sure there’s plenty of sweet stuff to go around! Pirates sail in from Adventureland, Clarabelle Cow hosts a square dance during a Frontierland hoedown, and a wicked assortment of Disney Villains reigns over a Fantasyland-inspired grand finale. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party kicks off August 16, with events held on select nights through November 1. Tickets are available now. With all that’s new this year, I may just have to plan two nights just to see and do it all! View the full article

  20. Sir Francis Bacon wrote: “God Almighty first planted a garden, and indeed it is the purest of human pleasures, without which edifices are but gross handiworks. And we shall ever see that as ages grow to civility and elegance, man comes to build stately sooner than to garden finely, as though gardening were the greater perfection.” This lofty philosophy had not greater advocate than Walt Disney, whose view of the Disneyland experience was to create a completely involving and realistic setting in which guests were a part of an encompassing show. “To achieve the right effect,” Walt said, “our Disneyland landscape architects combined their talents with those of builders and maintenance personnel and created a believable and authentic scene of nature’s own design.” The importance of landscaping, trees, plants, and flowers in his amusement park idea was heavily influenced by Walt’s love and appreciation of the great Tivoli Gardens park in Copenhagen, Denmark. One of the ideas that Disney imported from Tivoli was topiary plants, but with a new Disney flair. ©Disney Walt visited the famous 1844 landmark in 1951 with his friend, TV personality (and Disney Legend) Art Linkletter. “It seems that Walt was incredibly impressed by how clean and organized the park was compared to the seedier carnival-style amusement parks he was used to back in the US,” wrote Leonard Kinsey in the Baltimore Post-Examiner. “[Linkletter] recalled him furiously scribbling notes the whole time, about everything from the gardens to the food to the chairs they were sitting in…when Disneyland opened four years later in 1955, it definitely bore a strong resemblance to Tivoli, from the perfectly manicured landscaping, to the extensive use of waterways and intricate lighting…” As was typical, Walt assembled a unique team of experts to bring Disneyland into bloom. “In giving credit for the landscaping at the Park,” Walt wrote in the foreword to the 1965 book “Disneyland World of Flowers,” “it is impossible to mention all who have contributed. Special plaudits are due to Ruth Patricia Shellhorn for her design of the formal Victorian plan for Main Street, the Town Square, and the Plaza. The trees and shrubs she selected in the spring of 1955 are still used.” Little-known in the Disney lexicon today, Shellhorn (1909-2006) was a Los Angeles-based landscape architect known for the development of an “indoor/outdoor” style of living that came to be known as the “Southern California Look.” During her nearly six-decade career she designed residences, retail, city and regional parks, universities, and colleges; “Shellhorn’s many private gardens in Los Angeles and Pasadena were elegant, exotic, and among the most horticulturally distinctive of their day,” the Library of American Landscape History (LALH) says. Her most famous designs include the Bullock’s department stores (described by the LALH as “lush gardens and fountain-filled courtyards that lured shoppers with the promise of the ‘Southern California experience’), the Fashion Square shopping centers at Santa Ana, Sherman Oaks, La Habra and Del Amo in Torrance. Perhaps because of her early departure after initial design was completed, and her lack of any tendency toward self-promotion, Shellhorn is seldom associated with her Disneyland work, but deserves credit and recognition nonetheless. Morgan “Bill” Evans surveys his legendary Disney handiwork. ©Disney More frequently given sole credit for the Disneyland gardens is third-generation horticulturist Morgan “Bill” Evans, and his brother, Jack, who had landscaped the grounds of Walt Disney’s Holmby Hills home, including the gardens that surrounded his backyard railroad, the Carolwood Pacific. 1954, Walt asked Bill “How about you fellows landscape Disneyland for me?” “We landscaped all of Disneyland in less than a year, with a maximum of arm waving and a minimum of drawings,” Evans said of the project. His forthright approach and innate understanding of how landscaping fit into the art of place-making was a talent that must have not only pleased Walt aesthetically, but was a godsend to his evolving design and construction of Disneyland. Evans quite simply knew how to use his medium for storytelling. He was as much an artist with living plants as Sam McKim was with pen, ink, and paint; or Blaine Gibson was with clay. Evans knew how to use his palette to inform and add to the overall story being told without his work taking center stage. Evans continued to craft Disney’s horticultural myth-making or nearly half a century thereafter. In her book “The Making of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park,” Melody Malmberg recounts the three-part philosophy of this master landscaper and acknowledged leader in the field. “The first consideration was guest comfort—shade and shelter. The second was screening visual intrusions—creating a berm, a ring of earth and vegetation surrounding the park to hide the real world; or using strategic planting that camouflaged a building or electronics or lighting. The third principle was telling a story through landscaping—creating the right look for the setting, from the mixed broadleaf forest of Tom Sawyer’s Mississippi River banks to the serene gardens of Japan.” Adding edible plants to landscaping at Epcot has been a fascinating design addition and a guest favorite. ©DisneyThis philosophy continues to be a fundamental one in the creation Disney Parks and Resorts all around the world, and a standard initiated by Walt that remains a core value today.
