Calling all Resistance fighters to Batuu! Star Wars Datapad ©Disney Will you be joining the fight for the Resistance – or will you side with the First Order? Those are the paths you can choose with the NEW Rise of the Resistance jobs that will become available on the Disney Play app starting December 5, 2019 in Disney World! Coinciding with the opening of the Rise of the Resistance ride in Hollywood Studios (coming “tomorrowwww, tomorrowwww!!”), this new addition will be coming to the Star Wars: Datapad on the Disney Play app, and we are SO excited to see what it entails! First off, you’ll need to choose a side! To do this, when you open the app, look out for the new Star Destroyer icon in your Datapad! According to Disney, if you choose to help the Resistance “you’ll receive a distress signal from Finn, who is undercover on a Star Destroyer near Batuu.” From there, you can help him navigate the Star Destroyer by controlling his path. What happens next will depend on the route you navigate for Finn! But, along the way, chances are high that you may get to reprogram droids, or even gather information on what the First Order is doing. Star Wars: Datapad ©Disney Would you rather choose the First Order (hey, no judgment here!). In that case, you’ll be “tasked with surveilling and reporting back on the status of Resistance supplies.” The job will give you the opportunity to message with a First Order officer, and you’ll follow her instructions to scan crates or intercept transmissions throughout Batuu. Star Wars: Datapad ©Disney While this new addition to the Star Wars: Datapad will be launching December 5th to Disney World, it will not debut in Disneyland until January 17th, so it will coincide with the opening of Rise of the Resistance on the West Coast! Now, please excuse us while we count down the MINUTES ’til the opening of Rise of the Resistance in Disney World! Check out some of the other features of the Star Wars: Datapad here! And guess what, we had the opportunity to ride Rise of the Resistance TODAY! You can see our thoughts on the NEW Rise of the Resistance attraction here! Will you be joining the resistance, or siding with the First Order on the Star Wars: Datapad? Let us know in the comments below! If you’ve traveled to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, you may be familiar with the Star Wars: Datapad, a land-wide interactive experience available through the Play Disney Parks mobile app. There are so many ways to explore with your Datapad – and today, we’re excited to share details on two new jobs at Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance! Opening Dec. 5, 2019 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and Jan. 17, 2020 at Disneyland park in California, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will take visitors on a harrowing adventure and put you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance. With your Star Wars: Datapad, you can choose to support either side by selecting new jobs within the app as you move through the Resistance clearing and towards attraction. Distress Signal Received: If you choose to help the Resistance you’ll receive a distress signal from Finn, who is undercover on a Star Destroyer near Batuu. Connect and help him navigate the ship by selecting his path – and you may even free Resistance prisoners, reprogram droids and gather information on what the First Order is up to on the way. Depending on the route you share with Finn, you’ll uncover items and schematics exclusive to this assignment. Infiltrate Resistance Recruitment: Meanwhile, First Order loyalists entering the Resistance recruit line will be tasked with surveilling and reporting back on the status of Resistance supplies. You will be able to communicate with a First Order officer as you make your way through, and with her instruction you may choose to scan crates, intercept transmissions or even plant tracking devices from your Datapad. Look for the new Star Destroyer icon in your Datapad to take on these new jobs. Will you support the Resistance? Or help the First Order? And while exploring the surrounding area and Black Spire Outpost, use your “scanning” tool to discover new items that you can collect or trade with fellow galactic travelers, and don’t forget to use your “hacking,” “tuning” and “translation” tools to explore the land. Perhaps you’ll learn something new from a local droid, intercpet some local chatter or learn a galactic language! And for visitors looking to take part in more, help Hondo Ohnaka sort cargo during an in-queue game at Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, or join in “Outpost Control” to show where your loyalties lie. Of course…you could always breakout on your own as a scoundrel. You’ll just have to see where your Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge adventure takes you! Be sure to download the Play Disney Parks app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store before your visit to check out these exciting features and experiences. And during your visit to Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort, don’t forget there’s even more to explore with the Play Disney Parks app, from in-queue games and Disney trivia, to specially themed Disney Parks playlists through Apple Music®* and playful ride achievements. Available for iPhone® and smartphones for Android. Message, data and roaming rates may apply. Availability subject to handset limitations, and features may vary by handset, service provider or otherwise. Coverage and app stores not available everywhere. Music streaming feature requires an Apple Music subscription. Separate Apple Music terms and conditions apply. Subscription plan renews automatically after trial. If you’re under 18, get your parents’ permission first. Some features require separate theme park admission. Last night during our live stream of the “Candlelight Processional” – which you can watch on replay now – we asked our viewers to submit pics of their family’s favorite Disney Parks ornament and the stories behind them. We never anticipated the overflow of pictures we received, with many viewers sharing photos of special Disney Parks ornaments that commemorated unforgettable vacations and special life milestones. Some viewers even submitted pics of entire Disney-themed trees! Here are a few of our favorites! Check this out DIY fans! Jennifer made her own garland out of MagicBands from previous Walt Disney World Resort vacations! What a great way to commemorate a trip. And check out that Monorail, which travels through Epcot and Disney’s Contemporary Resort! And I spy Kermit, Miss Piggy and Fozzie from “The Muppet Christmas Carol” at the base of the tree. How fun! Elizabeth’s tree features what she describes as an “awkward family reunion” between Kylo Ren, Han Solo and Princess Leia. But on a more sentimental note, she shared that the Winnie the Pooh ornament, originally purchased by her own Dad, is family heirloom at nearly 50 years old! Her tree also features a “Jungle Book” bell, Winnie the Pooh, Simba and more! Chris has a very merry Disney scene surrounding his Disney-themed tree. I spy Mickey and Minnie singing Christmas carols, and a few Disney Princesses, including Merida, Anna and Rapunzel, classic characters, and our Muppet friend Fozzie enjoying the snow below. Anthony has a Disney-themed tree that is sure to make our runDisney friends happy: not only is it festooned with Disney ornaments, but it’s also flanked with medals from Anthony’s past runDisney races! The tree itself boasts Star Wars favorites like R2D2, Yoda and a Stormtrooper – plus a new addition to the Disney Pixar family – Forky! Mirah shared this photo, which is a Disney tree from tree skirt to tree topper! This colorful extravaganza features a plethora of Disney ornaments, including the brand-new Disney Skyliner ornament, a Cinderella shoe, Hitchhiking Ghosts, Ursula, Winnie the Pooh, a Mickey photo frame, an Epcot International Festival of the Arts ornament and many more. Can you believe Rise of the Resistance is almost FINALLY OPEN?!?! Rise of the Resistance And even though the Star Wars: Galaxy Edge major headliner doesn’t officially open until tomorrow in Disney World’s Hollywood Studios,– we got to take our first ride on it TODAY! To say that Star War: Galaxy’s Edge’s Rise of the Resistance was an ambitious undertaking is putting it mildly, folks! Here’s our spoiler-free first impression! SPOILER ALERT! From this point on, we’ll be describing Rise of the Resistance in detail, so if you want your first time on Rise of the Resistance to be a surprise, turn back young padawan! First off, you’ll encounter BB-8 and a hologram of Rey who will help you establish your role as a recruit of the Resistance, and give your mission to help take down the First Order! Rise of the Resistance And since you’re no longer safe on Batuu, Rey’s made arrangements to have you and the rest of the recruits transported to General Organa’s top-secret base! BB-8 in Rise of the Resistance You’ll make your way to the transport ship where Lieutenant Beck will help you escape from Batuu. One one side of the transporter you’ll watch him give commands as his pilot, Nein Nunb, navigates. Rise of the Resistance On the other end of your transport vessel, you’ll see a “window” where you can watch all the action happening — including when things start to get a little — umm… hairy! Rise of the Resistance Just before you make the jump to hyperspace, your starcraft picks up an unusual signal. Looks like a number of ships are heading your way! Something is Wrong! Lieutenant Beck calls for the shields to be raised, but it’s already too late! You’re outnumbered by swarms of TIE Fighters and despite the squadron leaders’ best efforts to help you escape, you’re taken into custody by the First Order! You’re caught in the tractor beam of the First Order’s Star Destroyer and about to be boarded. From here, you’re officially prisoners of the First Order (they know Resistance scum when they see it!) and escorted out of your transport vessel into the hangar bay of the Star Destroyer. Hangar Bay This massive room looks out of the airlock into space and has ships around the room as well as a TON of Stormtroopers lined up at the ready (no falling out of line, guys!). Stormtroopers! You’ll hang out in this room for a while. We were free to move around the room until we were instructed to move along. Hangar and Transport Vehicle When we were finally told to move on (we waited a bit!) we moved down halls… Hallways in Rise of the Resistance …and more halls… Heading to Transport Vehicle …to a pre-boarding area for your transport vehicles. Transport Vehicle Pre-Load Area Here, a First Order Officer will demand to know how many prisoners are in your party and queue you up on a certain color line to prepare to board your transport vehicle. First Order Officer The door will open and you’ll file in by order of color as instructed by the Officer to a holding room to prepare to be interrogated. Waiting to be Interrogated Stormtroopers look down on you in this small trangularish room. Then Kylo Ren and General Hux come on to the bridge above you. They WILL find out the location of your base. Hux escorts Kylo Ren to the bridge of the ship while they hold you there for the time being… Kylo Ren and General Hux …but something happens. Red lights flash and you realize a door is being cut into the side of the room! It opens up and you’re SAVED! The Resistance is here to help you get out safely. Secret Door From here, you’re hurried into a room with 2 transport vehicles ready to board with the help of the Resistance. Boarding Area Your trusty pilot, an R5 Astromech Droid, is here to help! As you may remember from waaay back in April when we first caught glimpse of one of Rise of the Resistance’s ride vehicles, each one transports 8 riders at time in two rows of four. And while each seat is outfitted with a seat belt, the vehicle itself is being “guided” by R5! R5 is here to help! We waited in this room a long while. We were told we were waiting for the First Order to clear out so it was safe to escape, but the wait was way longer than we would have expected. Finally, a display of Finn shows up to explain he’s here to help you escape and your transport takes off! Finn Helping You Escape The transport zips in every which way. It can move forward, back, and everything in between! As you hurry down the hall, you’re spotted by a Probe Droid! Luckily, your pilot can turn your vehicle on a dime and gets you out of there before he detects you. A Probe Droid Found You! He backs you out and around a corner to escape the droid, you’re spotted by Stormtroopers! They know you’re not supposed to be here and begin firing! Stormtroopers! Your transport hurries away into a bay full of AT-ATs! AT-ATs! Your transport zips around the AT-ATs, taking blaster fire the whole time from Stormtroopers! AT-ATs But Finn is here to help! He’s on the side of the room, helping return fire! He’s ready to help you escape! Finn to the Rescue! Just as you’re about to be saved, your transport backs up…then starts to rise!! Finn calls after you to stop, but you keep going until you’re face to face with Stormtroopers in the head of an AT-AT! Stormtroopers You back away quickly and end up on the lower level of the ship’s bridge! The Ship’s Bridge Kylo Ren and General Hux are having a conversation, but Kylo spots you! He’s coming for you, so your transport rushes away! Bridge of the Ship Kylo begins coming after you, appearing in front of you ready to attack… Kylo Ren, Ready to Fight You rush away, but he keeps up with you. He’s right above you, cutting into the ceiling with his Lightsaber! Kylo Cutting the Ceiling You rush off into a row of giant blasters firing out of the ship. This part was really cool! Your R5 droid knows he has to time his moves just right to navigate you between the blasters as they fire! You narrowly dodge being blasted as you navigate the room. Blasters Firing As you whiz through, you can see the battle happening outside the ship Poe Dameron and his team of Resistance fighters are helping you escape! As you make through the room, laser blasts light up the walls! Battle Outside As you escape the room, Kylo finally catches up with you. This is the only animatronic Kylo in the ride — the rest are projections. He has caught you! Kylo Ren But the Resistance fighters fire on the ship and the airlock is breached! Kylo begins to be sucked out of the ship and everything begins to collapse in on the opening to space! Kylo Your transport must escape! It zooms over to an escape bay where a door opens. Escape Bay And your vehicle moves into the escape pod. Escape Pod But an escape pod’s gotta break loose from the ship to escape, doesn’t it?! Hold on tight! Here’s that drop we’ve heard so much about! How was it?! Not bad! It’s nowhere near as intense at Tower of Terror, but same idea. It’s just enough that, if you’re not expecting it, it will give you a little surprise! Escaping! Your ship makes it safely away from the Star Destroyer and crashes back to land! From here, you navigate out of what kind of looks like a cave into…outside! Poe and Finn inform you landed it off target, but are safe! Outside! General Beck has crashed here safely congratulates you as you make your way to the exit. Everyone has made it out ok! Exit And that’s it! So what did we think?! WE LOVED IT! Seriously, the scale of this ride alone is so impressive. Between all the holograms, animatronics, and droids this REALLY feels like you’re in the movies. It’s truly the most immersive ride we’ve ever experienced! The transport vehicle moves so freely that it’s really fun while you escape! Other upcoming rides like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway have trackless systems, but the level of movement the transports on Rise of the Resistance are capable of is just incredible. As for the ride experience with all the transports, it reminded us a bit of Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye in Disneyland where there are many cars all going around you in different large areas of the ride, but you really don’t notice because you’re so focused on the action directed at you. There’s so many sounds, lights, and action happening around you! The absence of a track makes it difficult (or rather, impossible!!) to predict which direction you’ll be going! We found the ride isn’t so much scary as it is thrilling. We really don’t think children tall enough to ride will be frightened by it, and the drop isn’t too intense to scare off most riders. Now, for the only big negative we noticed. We waited. A lot. This ride seems to have many points of failure and we encountered many periods of extended waiting while inside the ride. We hope it’s just early working the kinks out, but once we were off the ride, we noticed shortly after it was closed for periods of time while they got everything working correctly. The ride is REALLY really cool and honestly did not disappoint. We think guests are gonna love it. While Rise of the Resistance is now open at Hollywood Studios, guests will have to wait until January 17th, 2020 to experience the Disneyland Galaxy’s Edge version! We’ll be there to cover the grand opening of Disneyland’s Rise of the Resistance when it happens next month — and see if we can spot any differences between the two! ORLANDO, Fla. (Dec. 4, 2019) – Today, Cruise Critic announced the results of its annual Editors’ Picks Awards with Disney Cruise Line and Adventures by Disney named “Best for Families” in the ocean and river categories. This is the fourth consecutive year that Disney’s cruise line and river cruise experiences have been recognized by Cruise Critic’s global panel of experts. “The Disney brand is synonymous with family fun and entertainment, and we strive to deliver unforgettable vacation experiences at every opportunity, for the young and young at heart,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Disney Signature Experiences. “Our talented cast and crew members are at the heart of all we do,whether they make magic on the high seas or in destinations around the world.” The Cruise Critic Editors’ Picks Awards are determined by an international team of editors, and are based on the cruise lines and ships they feel best represent excellence in the industry. While we only stepped into the lobby and saw the new short today, if you’re looking to be totally surprised by this new attraction, you may want to proceed with caution. We had the opportunity to see INSIDE the lobby, so we thought we’d share what we saw. Much like The Great Movie Ride, the queue goes into the Chinese Theater. Concept Art ©Disney While waiting, riders will have the opportunity to see the new Mickey short “Perfect Picnic.” This short also includes a new song, “Nothing Can Stop Us Now.” “Mickey Mouse in Perfect Picnic” ©Disney In the short, Mickey and Minnie are heading out for a picnic in the park. Along the way they see their pal Goofy driving a train talking about how it’s the perfect day for a picnic. As they go over a set of bumpy railroad tracks on their way, their truck flies open, which sends both Pluto and a pie flying. This pie lands in the smokestack of Goofy’s train and causes a whole bunch of issues. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway It causes the screen to explode, yes EXPLODE. It was totally insane! When this happens the screen magically transforms into a doorway and Goofy asks a Cast Member to bring guests through the screen to help out! This is when riders will enter a new room and will board their ride vehicles — which you can see here! Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Concept Art ©Disney While this is all we were able to see today, it has us really excited to see even MORE. We’re can’t wait to step into the screen with Mickey and Minnie on March 4th, can you? Read even MORE details about the new Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway here!
