Construction Update at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Disney’s Animal Kingdom isn’t just gussying up its rooms! As you may already know, Jambo House’s exterior has been undergoing some touch-ups recently, and now the entrance has just received a new ramp! Workers were still putting the finishing touches on it when we swung by! Jambo House Entrance We also noticed a new valet stand has cropped at the entrance to Jambo House, complete with a large bottle of hand sanitizer! Jambo House Entrance Further down, there was some additional work being done along the sidewalk. A few construction walls are still present, but work seems to be progressing right along! Jambo House Entrance It also appears the work outside of Jiko has wrapped up. The last several times we’ve stopped by, we’ve noticed workers and construction equipment around this area, but today it was all clear! Jiko Exterior See the before and after pics of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge’s recently refurbished rooms HERE! ‘Ohana means family, so we’re not leaving anyone behind and heading to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort to chow down — TOGETHER! ‘Ohana And since we’re looking to feed our whole crew, we’re heading back to ‘Ohana to fill up with their all-you-care-to-eat dinner. Our past few trips have varied wildly food-wise, even though the atmosphere is consistently spot-on. So we’re back to give the entrees another shot and find out if this restaurant is worth adding to your must do Walt Disney World list (and because you KNOW we can’t resist their bread pudding!). Atmosphere ‘Ohana is a Table Service restaurant located in Disney’s Polynesian Resort on Seven Seas Lagoon — across from both Disney’s Contemporary Resort and the dreamy Cinderella Castle. It can be a hard to snag reservation (re: bread pudding), so your best bet is to plan ahead if possible! If your first search comes up blank but you really want to go, it can be worth checking back from time to time because cancellations do happen! Check out our tips for making Advance Dining Reservations here! Now that we have our reservation and we’re ready to go, let’s head to ‘Ohana! There is a large waiting area outside the restaurant, but be prepared to stand or explore around while you wait to be seated — and make sure to take in all those tantalizing smells (that’s your dinner!)! ‘Ohana Waiting Area Once your table is ready, you’ll make your way into the main dining area structured around the large open fire pit where your dinner may already be roasting away! ‘Ohana Grill You truly feel like you have been transported to the islands as you walk into the dining room. The tall thatched roof with the ocean waves, the tiki god pillars, and tiki torches are fit for a luau — but one of our favorite perks of ‘Ohana is that VIEW! Much of the dining room is surrounded by windows so you can catch beautiful glimpses of the Lagoon or the Magic Kingdom fireworks if you time it just right! We aim to grab a reservation about 30 minutes before the scheduled show and ‘Ohana really outdoes themselves by playing the soundtrack and dimming the lights for the fireworks show. Dinner and a show? Yes please. Oh and some more bread would be lovely! Have we reached the height of casual luxury?? Outdoor Tiki Roof Since ‘Ohana is all about celebrating family, they really go above and beyond to ensure all members of your party have a wonderful time on the island. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the staff is intentional and attentive, and there is often live music or games to entertain any kiddos at your table! Coconut Races We haven’t even gotten to the food and you may already be able to tell why we keep returning to ‘Ohana. The location, views, atmosphere, and entertainment make this popular dinner spot attractive to guests of all ages — and rightfully so! But we’re here for dinner, after all, so how is the FOOD? Eats Dinner at ‘Ohana is an all-you-care-to-enjoy meal with a set menu. This experience is different than a traditional buffet because most of the food is served family-style, which means you don’t even have to get up to grab seconds (LUXURY!). Because the menu is already set, you’ll definitely want to let your server know if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies. In our experience, ‘Ohana has worked very hard to accommodate a variety of guests, but if you have severe allergies or several food restrictions, there may only be so much tweaking that can be done to the set menu. If in doubt, you can call ahead to see if ‘Ohana could be a good fit for you! Ohana Dinner Menu Is everyone comfortable, relaxed, and living the island life now? Good! Bring on the FEAST! Disney has found a creative way to say there is a LOT of food here. You’ll begin with Starters, then move to Appetizers, Accompaniments, Skewers, then Dessert. Get ready because there are at least two of each! Our meal started off with the signature ‘Ohana Pineapple-Coconut Bread. This was a sweet and tasty way to calm a ravenous stomach, but you’ll definitely want to save room because there’s so much more to come! ‘Ohana Pineapple-Coconut Bread While we were stuffing our faces with, er, enjoying the bread, the second Starter arrived: the Mixed Green Salad with Lilikoi (Passion Fruit) Dressing. We think this was a wise choice to lead with veggies because once the meat arrives, we’re not turning back! Although the Likikoi Dressing stuck around from our last visit, we saw a bit of a changeup with the salad this time around. Last time, the salad was mainly iceberg lettuce topped with edamame, mushrooms, carrots, and crispy wonton strips. This time, we got some green leaf lettuce and spinach action (which made for a much brighter bowl) topped with dried cranberries and crispy chow mein noodles. Mixed Green Salad with Lilikoi Dressing After the salad, our appetizers and sides arrived together, piled high! First, we tried the Honey-Coriander Chicken Wings (we’ve also spotted them over at Kona Cafe) and they were just as delicious and sticky as we remembered — but don’t forget there is plenty more meat to come! Ohana Appetizers and Accompaniments We then worked our way over to the crispy Pork Dumplings tossed in Garlic-Ginger Sauce. These crispy little pockets paired well with the Garlic-Ginger sauce they were tossed in, but don’t mind us going for a double dunk because we can’t resist a sauce. The wings and dumplings were served with Peanut Sauce and Sweet n Sour Sauce and there are no rules when it comes to this stuff — use it on whatever you please! Peanut Sauce and Sweet n Sour Sauce Our wings and dumplings were resting on a little mountain of Teriyaki Noodles. So maybe these noodles aren’t life-changing, but the classic noodles with a lil teriyaki glaze have grown to become an iconic staple of ‘Ohana and we seriously adore them. We were pretty thrilled we when spotted them on TWO different menus outside the restaurant (the Twilight Feast and on the secret menu of Tambu Lounge)! ‘Ohana Noodles Intrigued? Check out the time we ate ‘Ohana noodles from the comfort of our bed here! Our appetizers were rounded out with a serving of Stir-fried Vegetables. In the past, these veggies have been a traditional stir-fry mix featuring snow peas, broccoli, carrots, red peppers, and red onions. This time, the mix was a little bit different as it swapped out the snow peas for baby corn and the veggies were overall less hearty. We may have gotten the little pieces at the bottom of the bag, but honestly, we aren’t here for the veggies anyway! This time around, we were dining with a little one, so we caught a glimpse of the kids’ version of ‘Ohana cooking! The kids’ plate had a few classic Disney chicken nuggets and a whole lotta french fries. ‘Ohana Kids Chicken Nugget Meal Fortunately, we didn’t have time to be jealous of the fries because our plate was already overflowing with noodles and wings! While we munched our way to the main course, we sipped on a Lapu Lapu. This specialty cocktail is also available at Tambu Lounge and is a mix of Plantation Original Dark Rum, Tropical Fruit Juices, and Gosling’s 151 Rum, all served in a fresh pineapple. It was just as refreshing as our last visit! If you visit ‘Ohana and don’t get a Lapu Lapu, did you really visit ‘Ohana?! Lapu Lapu We’ve made it to the main event! This isn’t our first rodeo, so we knew to save room for the meats! The meats will be brought to your table on a skewer and plated for you by a server. They’ll continue to come around, so feel free to grab seconds (or thirds!) of your favorites! We started off with the Spicy Grilled Peel-n-eat Shrimp. These were some hefty lil shrimps and although we wouldn’t describe them as “spicy”, they were definitely tasty! Our shrimp were tender and flavorful, and the shells were scored, so they peeled right off! We did notice they weren’t quite as saucy as the other shrimp we’ve had here before, so you better believe we sent these shrimp for a swim in the Peanut and Sweet and Sour sauces! Spicy Grilled Peel-n-eat Shrimp Next came our real test for ‘Ohana. Will they continue to deliver juicy, delicious meat, or will they revert back to their old ways of triple roasting until it’s bone dry? Guys. They’re back. They have done it again and delivered with three great entrees across the board. The Szechuan Sirloin Steak was also not as saucy as our previous visit but it was cooked well and full of flavor! Szechuan Sirloin Steak The Sweet and Sour Chicken was also juicy and packed with sweet and savory flavors we would be happy to come back for! Don’t mind us as we sneak back over to the noodles to make the perfect bite! Sweet and Sour Chicken The servers continually checked on us throughout the meal and were happy to replenish any items if we hadn’t gotten our fill! After we finished up all the meat we wanted, we waved our white flag and surrendered to the final course. We noticed a theme as we were eating: the meal just kept getting better! But, we couldn’t forget that the best was yet to come. One of the reasons we keep coming back — despite the entrees being hit or miss — is because we can’t stay away from the ‘Ohana Bread Pudding. ‘Ohana Bread Pudding The Bread Pudding was served with a mega-scoop of vanilla ice cream and a side of caramel and banana sauce. The way the sauce starts to melt the ice cream and create the perfect blend with every bite — we truly can’t get enough. If your little ones aren’t yet fans of the finer things in life (or you’re keeping all that bread pudding to yourself), they can dig into the Children’s Dessert, which was a Rice Krispies Treat with Mickey Sprinkles in our case. Rice Krispies Treat with Mickey Sprinkles If you can’t make it to ‘Ohana for the Bread Pudding, you can try to snag some at Tambu Lounge after 4 PM or make it at home with this recipe! Overall It’s no secret we’ve been returning to ‘Ohana for the atmosphere or views (and the bread pudding, of course) and maybe not so much for the entrées. We came expecting some pretty dry meat that likely spent a lil too much time roasting on that giant fire pit, but we are thrilled that our more recent visits have been definite HITS! Our latest trip to the island had us smiling through every course and we are delighted that the food is finally catching up to all the other great parts of this dining experience. An all-you-care-to-eat dinner at ‘Ohana will set you back $55 for adults and $33 for children ages 3-9, so you’re going to want to make sure you come hungry! This can be a great use of a Table Service Credit if you’re on the Disney Dining Plan. This might not be the best place for you if you want to grab a spontaneous dinner (reservations can fill up quickly), if you are are a light or selective eater (a set menu might not be your jam), or if you are traveling with several kids who wouldn’t like this type of food. Don’t get us wrong, ‘Ohana is a great place for kids and your kiddos would probably have a fantastic time — but if you’re looking for the best bang for your buck, $33 chicken tenders might be tough to come to terms with. All in all, we will continue to return to ‘Ohana because of the amazing views, caring staff, now delicious food, and you can’t beat that Bread Pudding… (have we said that enough yet? ) If you’re looking to enjoy the ‘Ohana with some of your favorite Disney CHARACTERS, check out our full review of ‘Ohana’s Best Friend Breakfast HERE! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway takes lots of wacky twists and turns — after all, when you’re chuggin’ along in a cartoon train with Engineer Goofy at the helm, you can expect things to get a little kooky! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Sign But what fascinated us the most about the new ride (which just opened at Hollywood Studios last week) is how much attention went into every detail! While Disney told us to expect a subplot and secret Easter eggs hidden throughout the ride, we didn’t fully realize what we’d be entering into! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Click here to read everything you need to know before you ride Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway! You see, there are so many hidden Mickeys, and subtle references sprinkled throughout the new attraction. We think you’d have to have super-human powers to spot them all on your first try! ©Disney Before we get too carried away with all the special touches and extra goodies the Imagineers cooked up for Mickey and Minnie’s very first Disney park ride, we’re blowing our little wooden train whistles to let you know there are spoilers ahead — so reverse course if you want to be surprised! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway A and B Plots Plot A Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway’s lead story follows Mickey and Minnie on their way to a picnic, but this can’t be just any ordinary picnic, right? Especially with the name “Perfect Picnic”! After all, Mickey and Minnie live in the zany world of cartoons where nothing ever really seems to go according to plan! “Mickey Mouse in Perfect Picnic” ©Disney Things start to go awry fairly quickly. As the pair of lovebirds go over a set of bumpy railroad tracks in their sporty red roadster, Pluto and a pie go airborne. This pie lands in the smokestack of Goofy’s train (of course) and hilarious chaos ensues, resulting in the screen in front of you exploding. Through this hole, you enter the cartoon world — and that’s when things start to get really interesting! Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Naturally, you’ll narrowly miss disaster after disaster as you stampede through the Wild West, visit a carnival, avoid a swirling twister, escape from an erupting volcano, and plummet over a waterfall. You can read about our first entire ride-though experience here! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Plot B But what about that special Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway subplot we were told about? Remember how we told you Pluto and the picnic basket got ejected at the beginning? Well if you keep your eyes peeled, you’ll see Pluto trying to catch up to your train, and he’s carrying the picnic basket! After all, he’s Mickey’s best pal and he knows it can’t be the “Perfect Picnic” without the yummy food! Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Hidden Easter Eggs Similar to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’s Rise of the Resistance, depending on where you’re seated, your ride experience may vary. We also think some of the Easter eggs will be easier to spot than others depending on where you sitting, so try mixing it up each time you board Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway The Dapper Dans In the very first scene, a quadruplet tandem bike drives by on your right side with four passengers! If you pay special attention to what they’re wearing, you’ll notice their outfits look just like the ones the Dapper Dans normally sport! If you haven’t caught this famous Disney World barbershop quartet before, try taking in one of their performances next time your at Magic Kingdom! Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Yensid Valley Watch out for a directional sign in the first and last scenes which each have one arrow pointing to YENSID valley — this is a special reference to the sorcerer’s name in Fantasia from “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, which is also Disney spelled backward! Numbers and Their Hidden Meaning You’ll see a lot of numerical digits throughout Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, and many hold some sort of significance. The “1928” that appears overhead as you leave the first scene refers to the year Mickey Mouse was born. You’ll also see “1901” in the sewers — a reference to Walt Disney’s birth year, and the address to the Flower Shop in the busy city street scene is 1401, which is the street number of Walt Disney Imagineering’s headquarters in Glendale, California! Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Oswald Wins! There’s a newspaper near Jackhammer Pete in the city scene with a headline that reads, “Oswald Wins!” This is a nod to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a cartoon character created by Walt Disney that predates Mickey Mouse! ©Disney Iwerks Waterworks As you go through the water treatment plant, there is a fountain that says “Iwerks Waterworks” — named for Disney Legend Ub Iwerks, who was the animator credited with sketching Mickey Mouse for the first time! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway The Great Moving Ride In the carnival scene, there’s a poster advertising an attraction called “The Great Moving Ride” — an homage to the building’s former inhabitant, The Great Movie Ride! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Miss Fortune Also in the carnival scene, you may spot a sign for a fortune teller that reads, “Miss Fortunes”. This is an additional reference to a another Disney World attraction. Once called “Miss Fortune Falls” the Miss Adventure Falls waterslide is still at Typhoon Lagoon, should you be brave enough to try it out! Miss Fortunes “Steamboat Willie” Whistle Disney had already shared with us the new attraction would feature several sound effects created the old-fashioned way, so we kept our ears open for every noise. Some of the new effects were developed using Disney Legend, Jimmy Macdonald’s, original equipment from the 1930s. In fact, the exact same tri-tone whistle originally used in Mickey Mouse’s debut cartoon in 1928, “Steamboat Willie,” was used to record the locomotive whistle sound for Goofy’s Runamuck Railway! Wooden Whistle FastPasses are now available for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway! Just remember, since this is a top tier attraction, you’ll have to decide between riding this new attraction, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, or Slinky Dog Dash — Hollywood Studios’ other Tier One FastPasses! Have you ridden Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway and spotted any Easter eggs we didn’t mention yet? Let us know what they are and where you spotted them in the comments below! We seem to be encountering a reoccurring theme a lot throughout Magic Kingdom right now, and we’re not talking about construction like Cinderella Castle’s royal makeover or attractions being unexpectedly closed like the Haunted Mansion was earlier today! Haunted Mansion Unexpected Closure No friends, we’re talking about MISSING TREATS! First, we saw the giant Mickey Celebration Donut vanish without a trace. Then the Arendelle Aqua Cone was the next snack to suddenly go M.I.A., and now, we’re putting out an all-points bulletin for Sleepy Hollow’s Churro Ice Cream Sandwich, because it’s MISSING! The Churro Ice Cream Sandwich for $6.99 was one of our top value picks when it came to using your Disney Dining Plan snack credits wisely. We’ve pretty much been obsessed with this treat since it made its way over from Disneyland in 2018! Vanilla Ice Cream Churro Sandwich is GONE! But now Sleepy Hollow is serving an ice cream cookie imposter — albeit a delicious one! They seem to have gone back to their original Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich offering which was one of the standard snacks they had prior to the Ice Cream Churro Sandwich! We saw a sign for the new (old) Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich at Sleepy Hollow today, but it has yet to appear on the regular menu. Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich Sign at Sleepy Hollow And as you can see, the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich is still listed on Sleepy Hollow’s menu despite being unavailable at this time. We hope that means it’s just gone for now and we might see it return soon! Churro Ice Cream Sandwich is Still on Sleepy Hollow’s Menu Don’t get us wrong — the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich at Sleepy Hollow is still a totally tasty treat and excellent use of your snack credit since it’s also $6.99. It’s just not a super-unique item like the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich was! Plaza Ice Cream Parlor (which is just steps away from Sleepy Hollow) also serves the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich, but there’s nothing like the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich anywhere else on property! Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich We’ll keep an eye on Sleepy Hollow and we’ll let you know if and when we see the Ice Cream Churro Sandwich come back! Stay tuned for future developments! There’s a lot of booing centered around Disney World’s Haunted Mansion lately — but it’s not coming from any of the GHOSTS! Haunted Mansion You see, after the classic Magic Kingdom attraction closed unexpectedly last week, it just as inexplicably reopened yesterday. Disney Greetings from Magic Kingdom, friends! Magic Kingdom While many guests are enjoying their spring break vacation at Disney World this week, Cinderella Castle has just started to undergo its lengthy refurb! As soon as we walked in, we noticed four large bright orange cranes were flanking Cinderella Castle as the transformation has officially begun! Cinderella Castle Refurb Initially, we were reassured when we heard Cinderella Castle would remain uncovered while the icon got its new sparkly pink hue paint job, but even we gotta admit — these construction cranes are a bit of an eyesore. Maybe if they were light blue they’d “blend in” a little better? Cinderella Castle Construction Either way, Magic Kingdom Vice President Jason Kirk’s initial statement did warn us “while temporary construction equipment may be present while Cinderella Castle receives its royal makeover, it will remain uncovered and we will do our best to ensure guests are still able to capture special photos and memories in the iconic spot.” Castle Construction A few days ago, we also reported that the moat had been drained. Choosing a Resort Hotel for your next vacation at Walt Disney World Resort can seem like a rather large task. Value, Moderate and Deluxe … Oh My! Which one should you choose? Our panelists have come up with some great recommendations to help you plan where you might want to stay on your next trip. Location, location and location. For members of the Disney Parks Moms Panel, this seems to be their first recommendation. Do you want to be close to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios or does it make more sense to stay at a resort with easy access to the monorail? “When choosing the best Walt Disney World Resort hotel for my family I always focus on the location,” says Angie C. “All of the resorts have so many incredible amenities and wonderful theming, that location tends to be our focus. If there are new attractions in one of the parks we’re really eager to experience, we’ll choose a resort that is conveniently located to that park.” Samantha is also all about the transportation too! “Transportation options are one of the most important things my family and I consider when we’re choosing a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel. If there are options in addition to the buses, such as the monorail, Disney Skyliner, or water transportation, it means we can be on our way to having fun in the theme parks that much quicker.” And if your preschooler is obsessed with different modes of transportation, Kristen N. recommends choosing a Walt Disney World Resort hotel that offers multiple ways to get around. “The Disney Skyliner is our favorite new way to not only get around but to also have a bird’s eye view of Mickey’s house!” Transportation is a great tip, but for Doug, it’s all about his vacation theme. “We pick our resort hotel based on setting a theme to our vacation. Sometimes we want to feel like we have been transported to an island vacation, and at other times we want to feel like we are at a New England getaway.” We all know food at Walt Disney World Resort is an important part of a guest’s vacation, but for Eean it also helps her to decide which resort to reserve for her family. “We are Disney foodies, so when picking our Walt Disney World Resort hotel, we always consider the restaurants. For convenience purposes, we tend to stay at our hotel for our evening meal, and we feel that this is a great way to unwind and enjoy being with our family while staying close to “home.” Victoria & Albert’s is still on my bucket list, so guess where we’re staying next?” For more great tips like these, or for general Disney vacation planning questions visit DisneyParksMomsPanel.com for an answer from one of our panelists.
