  6. Tomorrow, we’ll have to say “goodbye for now” to all the parks in Disney World until the end of the month. AMC Although you might not be able to hop on your favorite attractions or meet some characters, you can still have a great time exploring Disney Springs! But, if you have any plans to pop by AMC Theatre, you might want to make sure you snag those movie tickets ASAP! In a statement released by the AMC CEO and President, Adam Aron, AMC Theatres will now be limiting their seating availability to only 50% of normal capacity to enforce social distancing. The Rise of Skywalker at AMC During each showtime, the screenings will appear to be sold out when they hit this 50% capacity mark from March 14th through April 30th. On top of that, the theatres will be following “enhanced cleaning protocols” between each showtime and “high-touch point areas” like handrails, doorknobs, kiosks, counter tops, restroom areas, and glass will be wiped down at least once an hour. Crew members will be staying home if they feel ill and AMC encourages guests to do the same. 8. The last few weeks have been twinged with a peculiar air of uncertainty due to the widespread yet unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 virus, otherwise known as Coronavirus. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge When news first came out that some of the overseas Disney parks would be closing down in an abundance of precaution against the highly-infectious disease, many of us were concerned about what would happen here in the States. Now it seems we finally have an answer. And if you, like many, were planning on visiting Disney parks in the next few weeks, this outcome of Disneyland and Disney World closing soon for the rest of March probably isn’t what you were all hoping for, but at least it’s a resolution. With this decision to close the U.S. Disney theme parks also comes some peace of mind. You no longer have to worry about what you should do, but now you need to know what you can do to cancel your trip. Epcot Read our Disneyland and Disney World FAQ regarding closures and cancellations here! We’re going to give you a checklist of how to proceed if you had booked a Disney trip from now through March 31st, 2020. Here’s What You Need to Do: Check With Your Airline First, you will want to reach out to your airline to see if they will allow you to modify or cancel your flight. Certain airlines such as Southwest will typically allow you to change your flight without a service fee. However, due to the impact that Coronavirus is having on the airline industry, many airlines that normally do not allow free modifications are making an exception. You can expect a long wait when you call your airline. We’d recommend going online first to see if your airline will allow you to modify your reservation online before picking up the phone. Mickey and Friends Topiaries If you used a travel agency or third party service to book your flights, you might need to reach out to them first. They also might be able to handle your other reservations on your behalf. Inquire About Canceling Any Rentals Including Cars, EVCs, Strollers or Non-Disney Hotels Since many Disneyland and Disney World guests use third-parties to provide them with additional services during their stay, each one will need to be contacted to modify any reservations. These could be orders you’ve placed several months ago for vehicles, equipment, etc., so think hard. Again, this might take some time due to how many folks are finding themselves in similar situations, so be patient. Space Mountain Refunds for Hotel Reservations at Disneyland Hotels Disneyland Hotels will remain until Monday, March 16th, at which point they’ll be closed until at least the end of March. For now, the only way to be refunded or change a reservation at any Disneyland Hotel is to call The Walt Disney Travel Company at (714) 520-5050. A Disneyland representative will also be able to assist you with getting a refund for any pay-in-advance experiences or any separate, specially-tickets events you may have purchased which are scheduled between March 14th and March 31st. The Disneyland Hotel We’ve heard the phone lines, again, are very backed up. So be patient. If you can’t get through, try again at a later time. There’s no immediate rush to take care of all of this, so try to keep calm. You’ll eventually speak to someone and clear everything up. Refunds for Hotel Reservations at Disney World Hotels Guests who are booked to stay at a Disney World Hotel between March 16th and March 31st can call to modify or cancel their Disney World Hotel reservations should they choose to do so. Animal Kingdom Lodge Due to the high volume of calls right now, it could take several hours to get through to a Disney World representative. That’s why Disney will automatically issue you a refund in the form of the original payment you used within 7 days of your original check-in date should you choose to do nothing. That being said, a Cast Member confirmed for us today that should you call and cancel your trip, you will receive reimbursement within 7-10 business days of the date you cancel. So hanging on the line might prove useful to some folks wanting to receive their refunds a little faster. Unlike Disneyland’s Hotels, Disney World’s Hotels will remain open while the theme parks temporarily close. Even if you don’t reach out to Disney, you will still receive reimbursement as long as you don’t check-in for your reservation. Magic Kingdom Fireworks If you took advantage of online check-in already, be sure to give Disney a call when you can. They’ll be happy to assist you. Since Disneyland and Disney World are only tentatively scheduled to be closed until the end of March, there is a possibility they might remain closed for even longer. If you were planning on visiting Disney World in the months following March, you can change or cancel your hotel reservation with a check-in date from any time starting now through June 30th, 2020 without incurring a $50 fee that’s normally charged for modifying a trip. Here’s What You DON’T Need to Do: In addition to not worrying about your Disney World Hotel reservations (as long as you’re not wanting to expedite the refund process), you also don’t need to cancel any FastPasses or Advance Dining Reservations scheduled between March 16th through March 31st. These will be canceled automatically on your behalf. If you have reservations at a location remaining open, like a Disney Springs restaurant or a resort restaurant, as long as you haven’t checked in for your resort reservation, your ADRs should be canceled. If you’re worried, you can always cancel yourself or give Disney a call to be sure. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Any additional pay-in-advance experiences you’ve scheduled during this time will also be automatically reimbursed to you without any action on your part. Modify Your Park Tickets At this time, you don’t need to do anything with your already purchased park tickets. Even if you contact Disney, they will tell you they aren’t issuing refunds for park tickets at this time. However, Disney will be automatically extending your multi-day tickets with unused days or tickets that were specifically-dated between March 12th and March 31st, 2020. You’ll now have until December 15th, 2020 without any work to be done on your end. If you’re unable to use your tickets by that date, Disney will credit the value of your unused tickets towards another ticket purchase for a future date. Of importance to some guests, Florida Resident Discover Disney Tickets may be used at Disney World through July 31st, 2020 and Disney World Annual Passholders will have their AP memberships extended by the same number of days the parks remain closed. Disney’s BoardWalk Click here to read more about Disney World’s policy for theme park tickets affect by Coronavirus closure. Refunds for Extra Event Tickets Guests who have purchased special tickets to extra events at Disney World’s closed theme parks such as Disney’s After Hours, Disney Villains After Hours and Disney Early Morning Magic for dates between March 16th and March 31st will automatically be refunded. We hope we’ve helped you make sense of the next steps you will and won’t need to take regarding the travel arrangements you’ve made to either of the U.S. Disney parks. 9. The temporary closure of the Disneyland Resort parks — Disneyland and Disney California Adventure — due to concerns over the Coronavirus goes into effect today, March 14th. Sleeping Beauty Castle Disney has provided the following information to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders in light of the closure. An email sent to Disneyland Annual Passholders shares that, as is the case for Annual Passholders in Walt Disney World, Passholders who hold Passports which are valid during the closure period (which, at press time, is scheduled to last through March 31, 2020) “will have their Passport expiration date extended based on pass type and level of access due to the impacts of the closure.” Passholders will see the new extended date on their Passport account before the parks reopen. Disneyland Annual Passholder Information screenshot Note that Passholders who participate in the Monthly Payment Program will continue to make payments as scheduled. Disney also states that “These Annual Passholders will have their Passport expiration date extended based on pass type and level of access due to the impacts of the closure, and will not be required to make any payments during that extended period.” Reservations made by Disney Flex Passholders be cancelled during the closure without penalty. As a reminder, the Hotels of Disneyland will not close until Monday, March 16th, and Downtown Disney is currently scheduled to remain open. 10. The past couple days and weeks have been a whirlwind with all the Disney parks closing in response to the Coronavirus outbreak. Cinderella Castle Refurbishment Many have been forced to or have elected to stay home in an effort to protect themselves and others and it seems Disney is attempting to bring a small ray of sunshine to what could be a confusing and dark time. 11. Well, it’s true that the four Walt Disney World parks will be closed on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, in light of concerns over the Coronavirus, with closure officially effective beginning Monday, March 16th. Les Vins de France However, the Cast Members at Les Vins de Chefs de France in Epcot’s France pavilion have still managed to share some St. Patrick’s Day joy a little early by giving a beloved bevvy a green makeover. That’s right… for the next few days, in any case, the Grey Goose Citron Lemon Slush has gone green again this year! Here is the regular appearance… Grey Goose Citron Slush And HERE is what it looks like now! GREEN Grey Goose Citron Slush You can also still get the Grand Marnier Orange Slush, which maintains its regular hue. Grand Marnier Orange Slush Speaking of drinks you can still get… remember, while the Walt Disney World theme parks are temporarily closed, the Disney World Resort hotels and Disney Springs are — at press time — set to remain open. Shamrockerita at BoardWalk Joe’s So if you’re looking to grab a green drink in Disney World on March 17th, be sure to check out the scene around Disney’s BoardWalk, which includes options like the Lucky Grasshopper at Belle Vue Lounge, the Shamrockerita at BoardWalk Joe’s, and the Magical Leprechaun at Leaping Horse Libations! 12. With the recent park closures and changes to cruises, Disney vacations are a little bit of a tight spot right now (but there’s some extra pixie dust trying to help that!). Beach Club Resort While Disney World and Disneyland are shutting their gates along with the rest of the Disney Parks around the world, the Disney Cruise Line is canceling upcoming departures as a precaution from the Coronavirus. So, if you’re a Disney Vacation Club Member, what does that mean for your points? Well, we did a little digging and got all the answers for you! Since the parks will be closing, Disney Vacation Club reservations will be receiving the same treatment as other guests staying at the resorts. Disney Vacation Club Sales Kiosk If members are booked at a Disney World Resort hotel from March 16th through March 31st, they may “modify or cancel their Disney Resort room reservation or Walt Disney World Travel Company package up to their original check-in date.” However, if they don’t wish to take action, their Disney Vacation Club points will automatically be credited back into their account within 7 days of their original arrival date. Saratoga Springs Resort However, one of the coolest parts about the Disney Vacation Club is that you don’t have to be a member to use the points for booking! Through third-party services like David’s Vacation Club Rentals, you can “buy” points from members to make reservations at the resorts. Animal Kingdom Lodge While they normally will not give you a refund, guests have stated that these rental agencies are working with them to either get a refund on their vacation or reschedule their trip for a later date with the current situation in the Disney Parks. Buuut, this does mean that guests may not be able to stay at their original Disney Resort of choice, depending on the booking changes. Disney’s Coronado Springs Along with the care put into all the reservations around the Disney Parks, we’re so glad to see that Disney Vacation Club members are being prioritized too! All your Coronavirus questions about the parks have been answered here! Check out everything you need to know! We will keep updating this post with more information as it develops! 14. Disneyland Resort is currently preparing for a temporary park closure beginning Saturday, March 14th due to precautions surrounding the Coronavirus. Disneyland While the Disneyland Resort hotels will remain open until March 16th, we are taking notice of the crowds in Disneyland park as tomorrow’s park closure — which also applies to Disney California Adventure — draws near. (Downtown Disney is, at press time, set to remain open). Now, it’s important to keep in mind one more factor affecting crowd levels in Disneyland that you will certainly notice in our photos… Rain in Disneyland Resort today It’s raining today. And inclement weather can affect crowd levels at any given time. But we’re nevertheless sharing our look around Disneyland park, where guests are still lining up a bit for those classic Disneyland Corn Dogs at the Little Red Wagon… Little Red Wagon And, of course, taking in views of Sleeping Beauty Castle. Disneyland An open path leads the way to New Orleans Square. New Orleans Square And speaking of empty paths… Disneyland today Disneyland today Disneyland today Still, much like in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom today, Adventureland is still… well, full of Adventurers! Adventureland Wait times display anything from 5 minutes for Splash Mountain to 40 minutes for Indiana Jones Adventure. Wait Times sign Wait Times sign And Boarding Groups, as you can see in the sign, are still in effect for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Galaxy’s Edge. 15. It was announced yesterday that all four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks will be closed from March 16, 2020 through March 31, 2020 in light of concerns over the Coronavirus. Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom While closures and cancellations will be (and in some cases already are) in effect for Disney Cruise Line sailings, Disneyland Resort, and other Disney destinations around the world, right now we are sharing a look at the current crowd levels today in Walt Disney World Resort as the March 16th park closure approaches. Before we begin, a reminder that — at this time — Disney Springs and Walt Disney World Resort hotels will remain open to guests. However, as guests are understandably making major changes to travel plans, crowd levels are affected at the parks starting now. Transportation and Ticket Center The Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) is a location from which to buy park tickets and also provides transportation to Epcot (via Monorail) and Magic Kingdom (via Monorail or Ferryboat). Obviously, two major Disney World destinations, and yet… Monorail to Magic Kingdom at Transportation and Ticket Center … paths were well open upon our arrival today. Taking the Monorail to Magic Kingdom, we’ll share first what we are encountering there. Magic Kingdom Bearing in mind that mid-March is a very common time for Spring Break in the United States, the scene entering Magic Kingdom is not what you would typically expect. Entering Magic Kingdom You may notice the poster board in the photo below; it advises guests on recommendations and precautions by public health experts. 21. Yesterday, Disney announced the closure of the four Walt Disney World theme parks (in addition to closure at Disney destinations around the globe including Disneyland Resort and Disney Cruise Line) in light of concerns over the Coronavirus. Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom As a reminder, the closure is set to begin “at the close of business on Sunday, March 15th, through the end of the month,” March 31st. At press time, Resort hotels and Disney Springs will remain open for guests. To that end, Disney is providing information for concerned Walt Disney World guests who have already purchased park tickets, booked a Resort hotel, made Advance Dining Reservations, and more during the affected dates. Walt Disney World Entrance We’re taking a look at what guests who are currently in the process of adjusting travel plans are eligible for in regards to refunds or future use of already-purchased tickets, experiences, and more. Walt Disney World Theme Park Tickets Disney has stated the following in regards to ticket purchases: “Unexpired multi-day theme park tickets with unused days, or date-specific theme park tickets with a start date on or before March 31, 2020 will automatically be extended to use any date through December 15, 2020. If you are unable to visit by December 15, 2020 you may apply the value of a wholly unused ticket toward the purchase of a ticket for a future date.” Disney Ticket Center For guests who have purchased Florida Resident Discovery Tickets, they may be used through July 31, 2020. Art of Animation Resort Disney will waive all Disney-imposed change and cancellation fees for guests wishing to cancel a Disney Resort hotel booking after the parks reopen up to the date of check-in through June 30, 2020. Advance Dining Reservations If you made an Advance Dining Reservation for a table service restaurant in Walt Disney World for a location affected by the closure requiring a credit card guarantee, Disney states that you will not be charged a cancellation or no-show fee. Yesterday, The Walt Disney Company announced that Disneyland, Disney World, Disneyland Paris, AND the Disney Cruise Lines will all be temporarily closing in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland This is an unprecedented move closing the parks for this long. We’ve already seen the closures of Tokyo Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disneyland due to the virus. But just how rare is the closure of a Disney park? Let’s take a look back at all of the times Disneyland and Walt Disney World have closed in the past. It was announced today that Disneyland Resort will be closed starting Saturday, March 14th in response to the coronavirus outbreak. This will be the longest amount of time on record that Disneyland has ever closed since it first opened in 1955. Disney World will be closed starting Monday, March 16th. This will also be the longest amount of time Disney World will have ever been closed. Disneyland November 1963 The first unexpected closure of Disneyland came 8 years after the park opened. Disneyland closed its gates on November 23, 1963, the day after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The park remained closed for one day. ©Disney January 1994 Disneyland went over 30 years until their next unexpected closure. Sleeping Beauty Castle September 2001 Most recently, Disneyland was closed following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The park reopened the following day. ©Disney Walt Disney World September 1999 Disney World made it nearly 28 years until it experienced its first unexpected closure. But the streak was ended on September 14, 1999. With Category 4 Hurricane Floyd approaching, Disney World closed all of its theme parks, water parks, and Downtown Disney (now known as Disney Springs) early in the afternoon. Most parks were closed the next day as well, but when the storm changed course, Animal Kingdom and Downtown Disney were reopened on September 15. The other parks opened the following day. Cinderella Castle September 2001 Disney World was also closed on September 11, 2001 following the terrorist attacks. But unlike Disneyland, the Disney World parks had already opened for the day. Cast members in each park were instructed to form “human walls” to slowly push guests to the exits. The parks were reopened on September 12th, with new security measures in place. Flag at Epcot Entrance at Half-Mast August 2004 Disney World saw its next hurricane-related closure on August 13, 2004. Category 4 storm Hurricane Charley was the offender this time around. Most of the parks reopened the following day, but storm damage kept some attractions closed for longer. Cloudy Skies Over Epcot September 2004 Unfortunately, Central Florida didn’t get much of a break. Disney World closed again on September 4 and 5, 2004, due to Hurricane Frances. The parks began reopening on September 6th. Magic Kingdom September 2004 (part 2) The hits kept coming in 2004. Disney World parks were closed again on September 26, 2004 because of Hurricane Jeanne. Luckily, this was the last closure for over a decade. Walt Disney World October 2016 On October 6, 2016, Disney World closed all of their parks at 5 p.m. because of the approach of Category 5 storm Hurricane Matthew. The parks were closed the following day as well. Epcot Japan Pavilion September 2017 The next year, Hurricane Irma forced another Disney World closure. Parks were closed starting at 9:00 p.m. on September 9, 2017, and they stayed closed until September 12th. Tree of Life September 2019 Most recently, Disney World closed all of the parks early on September 3, 2019 in preparation for Hurricane Dorian. Most parks were closed at 3:00pm, but since the storm changed course, Epcot hours were extended until 7:00pm. Since the storm continued to move away from Central Florida, all of the parks were reopened on September 4th. Hurricane Dorian Radar – September 3rd While closures of Disneyland and Disney World are rare, they do happen occasionally!
