Hi, I’m Josh Gorin, a creative development executive with Walt Disney Imagineering, and one of the hosts and contributors to Imagineering in a Box – a free online program created in partnership with the Khan Academy and Pixar. Imagineering in a Box is a series of interactive lessons in theme park design and engineering, designed to give a behind-the-scenes peek into Imagineering’s development process. It combines 32 videos of actual Imagineers, real-world case studies, and lots of interactive activities to give you the opportunity to dream and design your very own theme park experience! With so many families at home together right now, we thought this would be an especially useful time to share this program with you. It’s available to all and completely free. When I was growing up, I would visit the Disney Parks with my family and ask, “how did they do that!?” I watched Disney’s behind-the-scenes TV specials and realized that Imagineering was an actual “job” — it inspired what I studied in school and ultimately led to my current role. Today, we are so excited to share with learners of all ages the unique ways that science, technology, engineering, and math can be combined with creativity and design to create larger-than-life entertainment for millions all around the world. And maybe, we’ll be helping the Imagineers of tomorrow to get their first start. How are you using this program? Use #Disney, #BetterTogether and #ImagineeringinaBox on Instagram and tag @WaltDisneyImagineering to let us know, and for your chance to be featured. View the full article

Earlier this week, we discussed a frequently asked question we have received here at DFB regarding the temporary closure of Walt Disney World due to concerns over the Coronavirus: “Will Disney World really re-open April 1st?” Magic Kingdom A new piece by the Orlando Sentinel sheds light on what analysts are conjecturing regarding the reopening timeline for Walt Disney World. Please note that — at press time — Disney has not responded to comment, per the article. And the official Walt Disney World website states “In line with state and federal guidance and in an abundance of caution, Walt Disney World theme parks are closed through March 31st.” Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland According to the Orlando Sentinel, analysts are currently predicting that “Disney World theme parks could close longer than the currently scheduled two weeks with the shutdowns running into mid-April.” The article shares the following quote from an analyst note published on Tuesday by research firm MoffettNathanson: “We expect the closure to extend for another two weeks into April as the country scrambles to get this virus contained.” The article also discusses potential financial consequences of the closure. Here is what we can say with certainty: as we previously discussed, Disney will not put guests’ or Cast Members’ safety at risk and will continue to take precautionary measures as needed. Hand-Washing Sign We have also discussed WHAT WE CAN ALL DO NOW to ensure the parks re-open as soon as possible, and you can read that here. The Give Kids The World Village is a non-profit resort in Central Florida. A place “where happiness inspires hope,” Give Kids The World provides a “storybook” setting where children with critical illnesses together with their families enjoy weeklong vacations (including transportation, tickets to theme parks, and more) at no cost. Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire Give Kids The World has announced its decision to suspend all operations of the Village due to concerns over the Coronavirus with the goal of keeping “everyone involved safe and to do our part to help prevent the spread of this global pandemic.” Operations are suspended until April 1st, when the organization will reassess in order to make the safest decision regarding reopening. On the organization’s website, it is shared that “Half of all children eligible for a wish through a partnering wish-granting organization choose to visit Central Florida and its collection of theme parks and other attractions,” and that Give Kids The World welcomed their 175,00th family this past January. The organization also shares that “We look forward to getting back to fulfilling wishes as soon as we can.” You can learn more about the work and service that takes place at Give Kids The World Village by visiting their website here. This has truly been a bizarre week not only for Disney guests, but for families all across the country. Cinderella Castle While Disney World prepares for an unprecedented closure due to the Coronavirus, we’ve been doing our best to answer all of your questions during a time where things are changing by the minute. While we have already answered several of your questions about how this closure could affect your travel plans, we’ve also received some important questions that you may have not thought about! What about all of the animals? Who will take care of them? Will people try to steal them? Although there has never been a closure like this in Disney history, we have the highest hopes that the animals throughout Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Animal Kingdom Lodge will be well taken care of during the closure. Elephant on Kilimanjaro Safaris When the parks have closed in the past, such as for hurricane Dorian, Disney World has groups of Cast Members known as “Ride Out Teams” stick around to take care of guests (and animals!) until it is safe for the parks to reopen — so we are thinking there will be some form of a Coronavirus Ride Out team in the meantime! Buuuut if they are taking volunteers, we call watching the baby zebra! Check out the full history of all the times Disney Parks have closed in the past here! What about the weddings? If you’ve planned a wedding, you know just how much can go into the details, prepping, and DEPOSITS! The Cast Member we spoke with advised brides and grooms to contact their wedding agents regarding cancellations and rescheduling. Floral design on Magic Kingdom Lawn at Disneyland Hotel Since Disney has offered to reschedule park tickets until December, we hope brides will be offered a similar option to reschedule. You married folks may also know how popular venues can be booked solid for YEARS, so we are curious to see how Disney will navigate all of the rescheduling. Click here to find out everything Disney World is refunding so far! OR Click here to find out what Disneyland is refunding due to the closures! Will Cinderella Castle’s makeover continue? While we still don’t have an official word from Disney on whether construction will continue in the midst of park closures, we did get a glimpse inside an empty Magic Kingdom on the park’s first day closed to guests. During this sneak peek, we could see that the cranes were back UP, even after they had been lowered for the fireworks show the night before. Magic Kingdom Today It was looking like Cinderella Castle was still getting her rosy glow on — but now that the President’s Coronavirus Guidelines recommend gatherings of no more than 10 people, we’re seeing construction projects come to a halt across Disney World. Check out how the finished product of Cinderella Castle’s makeover is planning to look here! What about the “Donald Duck with Spike the Bee” magnet? We had previously reported that, in celebration of Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival, Annual Passholders would be able to pick up a Donald magnet from March 4th to April 19th and an Orange Bird magnet from April 20th through June 1st. Passholder Magnet Disney World is planning to remain closed until at least the end of the month, which means there could still be time for you to snag the precious Donald and Spike the Bee magnet before the deadline! We are taking things one day at a time, but you know we will track those babies down if the park closures extend into April! Get a sneak peek of the Orange Bird magnet here! What about the Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction merchandise release? Remember how we have been looking forward to the third Saturday of every month to see our main gal, Minnie Mouse, as The Main Attraction?! We raced to see her struttin’ her Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean attire, but who will be there to pick up March’s Teacup Minnie if the parks are closed for the March 21st release?? Not to fear! The March Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction Collection is still planning to be available on shopDisney on March 21st at 7AM PT! ©shopDisney Check out a sneak peek of the APRIL Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction collection here! What does the closure mean for ‘Disco Yeti’? Animal Kingdom’s thrilling adventure, Expedition Everest, takes you on a journey to summit Mount Everest — including an encounter with the Yeti! When the ride first opened, the Yeti’s animatronic arm swung over you as you exited the side of the mountain, but it didn’t take very long for this feature to break down. Expedition Everest Unlike the animatronics on Rise of the Resistance (which we see continually being repaired), we haven’t seen the Yeti back in action in years! The animatronic’s frame was built into the main structure of the mountain, so when the frame started cracking due to the animatronic’s motions, the Imagineers knew this wouldn’t be an easy fix. They have since added a strobe light to the Yeti and stopped his movement, which makes it look like he’s throwing a dance party for one — so fans often refer to him as “Disco Yeti!” Could this recent closure give the Imagineers time to FINALLY fix the Yeti?? everest We were surprised how much we saw this question going around! Even Imagineer Joe Rohde, who was crucial in the design of the attraction, spoke out on Twitter to taper guests’ optimistic expectations. When asked if “14 days [is] enough [time] to fix Disco Yeti,” he replied with a simple “No.” With so much other construction already scheduled and now postponed in the parks, such as Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, TRON Lightcycle Run, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, we imagine we won’t see Disco Yeti returned to his former glory for a while. Find out what happens when the Rise of the Resistance animatronics aren’t working as planned HERE! Yes — it is such a strange time in the world of Disney, but we are thankful to be walking through it with readers like you! We aim not to make light of this devastating situation, but to bring a little spark of Disney magic to you as we face these events together. Please keep your questions coming and we will do everything we can to help track down the answers! The construction cranes were still surrounding Cinderella Castle on Monday, the first day of Disney World’s temporary closure. Was it a sign Disney might be continuing on with some of its many projects that are currently underway? Magic Kingdom Today It appears not. According to the Orlando Business Journal, Disney has halted all construction due to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping our country. In recent days, health and government officials have placed even tighter restrictions on public gatherings. What was once groups of no more than 250 could assemble for the next 8 weeks quickly became groups of 50 and the latest number has been reduced to 10. This new safety recommendation has come at a time when Disney World has several construction projects in the works for its 50th-anniversary celebration happening in 2021. Cinderella Castle Construction While Disney has yet to release an official statement, Mark Wylie, president and CEO of the Central Florida chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors Inc. says these new limitations will make construction nearly impossible to carry on at Disney World. He also expects other Central Florida construction sites will be shutting down soon as well. Dreamers Point construction There’s some hope for “less intensive projects” such as Cinderella Castle’s refurbishment which might be able to continue on, but according to Wylie, Disney’s larger projects such as Epcot’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, as well as the new Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, could be impacted by this disruption. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Postponing construction could also drastically affect the timeframe Disney had originally planned for these new attractions to open. We could possibly see grand opening dates for Disney’s upcoming attractions pushed back as a direct result. This would include work on the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel that is scheduled to open in 2021 as well as the massive Epcot Transformation, Space 220 Restaurant, Spaceship Earth’s refurbishment which was slated to take kick-off starting in May. We might also see Magic Kingdom’s TRON Lightcycle Run, once expected to be open in time for Disney World’s 50th-anniversary deferred. TRON Coaster at Magic Kingdom While no delayed openings are confirmed, it is simply a possibility since they aren’t able to proceed with construction at the moment. We’ll continue to update you as this story unfolds including if or when Disney makes an announcement regarding the construction of its upcoming attractions and experiences, so stay tuned. Are you surprised that Disney World has stopped its construction? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below. With local communities more in need than ever during this unprecedented time, Disneyland Paris recently donated 15 tons of surplus food inventory to local and national associations in France such as Secours Populaire Français and Restaurants du Cœur, following the important decision to close Disneyland Paris through the end of the month. The large-scale donation operation was accomplished thanks to resort cast members who were mobilized to identify, collect and redistribute fresh products – including salads, fruit, dairy and more – as quickly as possible. This is just one example of Disneyland Paris’ longstanding commitment to reduce food waste and support those in need. We take steps throughout the year to raise awareness and engage our guests and cast members, including placing information signs in buffet restaurants and collecting organic food waste from meal preparation in all of our restaurants.
