Hey there, Disney Vacation Club families! We know you love your vacations and your home resort, and we know you love to stay where you can be a part of the magic. As we have said “Welcome Home” to guests at Disney Vacation Club properties at Walt Disney World Resort and Vero Beach, Florida and Hilton Head, South Carolina, we thought it would be fun to create a quiz for a friendly trivia night with your family to recreate some of the magic in your own home. We’re calling it “Disney Vacation Club Trivia Night.” You can test each other on your knowledge of fun facts, and come up with some fun prizes such as the winner picks the next dessert (for inspiration check out some of the Disney classic recipes we recently shared on the Disney Parks Blog). Now, get two teams together and find out who knows more about Disney Vacation Club! Follow these simple instructions: Print out a copy of the trivia sheet here. Pick a moderator. The moderator in your home will ask each team member a question, alternating between the two teams. Each time you get an answer right, your team gains a point. At the end of the series of questions, the team with the most points wins. View the full article

Since Magic Kingdom reopened last week, we’ve been heading to the park regularly to see what’s new! Magic Kingdom And while we’re still hoping to see our beloved PeopleMover return to operation soon, we did notice that another iconic attraction was looking extra pretty today! When Magic Kingdom first reopened, there were still construction walls surrounding the queue of “it’s a small world” in Fantasyland. The ride itself was operating, but the construction walls gave it a bit of a closed-off feel! Construction Walls Around “it’s a small world” Well, today we noticed that the construction walls around the “it’s a small world” queue have now been removed! The Construction Walls Around “it’s a small world” are gone! So, while the ride did reopen with the park, now “it’s a small world” looks even more beautiful free of the construction walls! “it’s a small world” We’ll continue to scope out the reopened parks to check on everything from dining experiences to new merch, so stay tuned for more updates! Here’s a look at the wait times on the reopening day of Magic Kingdom! Which Magic Kingdom attraction are you the most excited to experience when you return to the park? Let us know in the comments! We’ve been back in Magic Kingdom this week and there are a lot of changes. Magic Kingdom We’ve been visiting the park since it opened last week to see what’s been happening at “The Most Magical Place on Earth” now that guests have returned to the parks. But on our journey through the park today we spotted a new resident at Magic Kingdom’s main gift shop. Look who’s just arrived at the Emporium — it’s FORKY from Toy Story 4! Forky Brush But wait a minute — there’s something fishy about this Forky…is he actually a hair BRUSH?!? Forky Brush Affirmative! This Forky is doing what we’re all doing these days — multi-tasking! He’s a figurine on one side, but a hairbrush to comb your luscious locks on the other side! Forky Brush And he’s even got Bonnie’s name “written” on the underside of his little popsicle stick feet! Could this thing be any cuter (or STRANGER)? Forky Brush We’re not sure what diabolical genius decided to invent a Forky Brush, but if you want to claim one as your own, they’re now being sold at Disney World for $16.99! All four Disney World theme parks have finally reopened after their longest closure in history. Magic Kingdom We’ve spent the better part of the last two weeks exploring the parks to show you all the changes that have been implemented while guests were away. From seas of social distancing markers to newly installed plexiglass barriers and temperature screening checkpoints, there’s certainly been a lot of new ground-breaking procedures to cover! Now we want to discuss Disney World’s Disability Access Service or (DAS). Disney stated prior to the theme parks’ reopening DAS would resume and operate the same as it did prior to Disney World’s closure. We spoke with a Cast Member at Magic Kingdom’s Guest Relations during the who confirmed this was the case. Assistive technology devices for guests with hearing disabilities are still available at Guest Relations and are being thoroughly cleaned before being redistributed. Guest Relations Meanwhile, guests with disabilities are able to ride Disney World’s attractions through the same process as they could previously. Rider switch is still available and Disability Passes are still in use with alternative access entrances for guests with disabilities. Alternative Access Entrance For Guests with Disabilities Keep in mind, guests with disabilities will still need to join a boarding group to ride Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Passes are distributed at 10AM, 1PM, and 4PM daily, and guests may only join one group per day. Guests must also transfer from their wheelchair or EVC vehicle to ride. Rise of the Resistance Strollers, wheelchairs, and EVC vehicle rentals are still available and stroller rentals can still be delivered to your Disney World Resort hotel. Companion Restroom Companion restrooms are also still available. Learn more about the situation with restrooms at Disney World here! At this time there is no exception to Disney World’s mandatory face mask policy. Guests with disabilities must also wear a face covering at all times. Relaxation stations are provided throughout each theme park where all guests may temporarily remove their mask. Guests can also take off their masks while seated at a quick service or table service restaurant. Relaxation Station Inside Pete’s Silly Sideshow We’ll continue to share more helpful information with you as we navigate the newly reopened Disney World theme parks, but for now, check out this Rise of the Resistance glitch that kept us from joining a boarding group TWICE yesterday! Alright, we have OFFICIALLY been to all four Disney World parks BUT…one of these things is not like the others. While other Disney World parks seem to have smooth sailing with their reopenings, Hollywood Studios is struggling with crowds, pinch points, wait times, and ride breakdowns. Hollywood Studios Disney Park Pass reservations are slim when it comes to getting into Disney’s Hollywood Studios — which means it, and its headliner attractions like Rise of the Resistance, the brand new Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, and Slinky Dog Dash, have been a serious draw for guests since the park reopened on Wednesday. It’s absolutely Disney World’s hottest ticket right now, and that means — despite Disney lowering capacity in the parks — it’s BUSY. We compared Disney World’s glitziest park’s opening day with all three of the other parks and crowds were definitely heavier. We even went back the next day to see if crowds and pinch points lightened up. Spoiler alert: They didn’t. With a smaller footprint, fewer open rides, and Disney World’s most popular attraction by far, Hollywood Studios has struggled to reach the same equilibrium the other parks achieved relatively quickly. We’ve covered Disney’s Hollywood Studios during Cast Member previews, on reopening day, and on Thursday. Here are our thoughts on crowding in the park — and what you can do to have a good day AND stay safe and socially distanced. Hollywood Studios is by FAR Disney World’s most crowded park. With social distancing a priority, we’re definitely looking to avoid crowds in a reopened Disney World. That goal is a whole lot easier said than done in Hollywood Studios. Crowds in this park can get a little overwhelming at times, especially in the morning. There are a few reasons for this and understanding why can help you to avoid the relative crazy! Galaxy’s Edge Crowds ‘it’s a small park’ Hollywood Studios is a pretty small park at 135 acres (the only smaller park is Magic Kingdom at 107 acres). And where Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and even Magic Kingdom give guests a chance to spread out; you’ll FEEL the crowds in Hollywood Studios, even if they are limited. And the attractions are limited as well. Hollywood Studios has 11 “wait time” attractions right now; Magic Kingdom, for comparison, has 21. Pre-closure, this park relied on a variety of large, sit-down shows it presented throughout the day to help suck up guests and break up crowds. All of those are closed for now. Many experiences around the park are also closed down or altered (like Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber experience transitioning to just selling premade Legacy sabers). On top of that, the park has several not-so-popular attractions along with three mega-hits. That’s a recipe for crowded walkways, specific pinch points, and lengthy waits. The Design Is Choppy This park also has a less effective crowd flow than the others. All of the other parks have some sort of circular or wheel-and-spoke layout. Hollywood Studios doesn’t have such an intuitive design. There are a good number of bottlenecks, pinch points, and (worst of all) dead ends! These spaces make it difficult to navigate, especially when everyone is trying to keep their distance. Galaxy’s Edge Disney World’s MOST Popular Rides Are Here Still, the size and wonky layout aren’t the only things causing crowd pile-ups. Many of Disney World’s MOST popular attractions are in this park! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway opened just weeks before the parks closed, Slinky Dog Dash has been one of the most popular rides in Disney World for a few years now, and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Rise of the Resistance have been UBER packed since they debuted last year. That means that instead of spreading out across an entire park like guests can do with Magic Kingdom’s 21 attractions, the majority of park guests are going to three specific points in the park. We’ve seen significant crowds in Galaxy’s Edge, at Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, and in Toy Story Land. The other side of this is that folks FLOCKING to the big lands leaves some areas, like Sunset Boulevard, pretty vacant first thing in the morning. Slinky Dog Dash All this is to say if you’re not ok with the occasional lapse in social distancing, Hollywood Studios might not be the park for you. We’ve even seen this crowding when the park isn’t even at capacity! At the end of the day Thursday, there were still Disney Park Passes available for Resort guests, meaning even MORE people could be in the park if they chose to do so. A capacity day could get a little overwhelming here. Click here to see more of what crowds look like in a reopened Hollywood Studios! It’s not any easier to ride Rise of the Resistance. Plus, much to our chagrin, it’s not any easier to ride Rise of the Resistance. Prior to the parks closing, riding the crazy popular ride was SUPER tricky. It required an extremely early morning, some quick tapping on your phone, AND reliable cell service (not to mention a massive dose of luck). We thought things might be a little easier when we heard that Disney would be limiting capacities AND not using Virtual Queues. Rise of the Resistance Queue Unfortunately, we were wrong. First of all, Disney swung a u-turn and announced a NEW Virtual Queue process for Rise of the Resistance just days before reopening. The new queue has three separate time windows where you can attempt to snag a boarding group. In theory, this sounded great! No more early mornings and if you don’t get lucky first thing, try again at the next boarding group window. In practice, things don’t feel all that different. Even with three separate windows — at 10AM, 1PM, and 4PM — boarding groups are gone in under a minute when they open up. We’ve even run into a glitch that’s gotten in the way of our chances at a group! Plus, with the return window when your group is called going from two hours to one hour, you’ll be stuck if you’ve jumped in a long line at the wrong time elsewhere. Make sure you keep an eye on the newly-introduced estimated wait time to avoid missing your chance to ride! Stormtrooper Room Rise of the Resistance has also been struggling with breakdowns, giving similar vibes to its opening weeks. This is hopefully not a systemic issue and ideally won’t affect your experience, but it’s something to note. The fact of the matter is that even with limited capacity in the park, there may not be as many slots to ride Rise of the Resistance as there are people in the park. And since this is the ONE attraction that everyone — pretty universally — wants to ride, a number of guests are left disappointed. Click here to learn more about what happens when you MISS your Rise of the Resistance return window! Wait times are long. Rise of the Resistance aside, wait times for big-ticket attractions in Hollywood Studios are significantly higher compared to the other parks. In Animal Kingdom, waits have been sitting between 5 and 15 minutes; and most popular rides at Magic Kingdom are comfortably hovering around 5-10 minutes. Hollywood Studios has seen waits spike over two hours. It definitely feels the MOST like a pre-closure park. And with no FastPass+ operating right now, that rush to get to attractions is on in the morning. Slinky Dog Dash Queue Remember how we said that there are three mega-hits in Hollywood Studios? That’s reflected in the wait times. Yesterday morning (the park’s second day open to the public) the Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway queue FILLED UP with a wait over two hours RIGHT when the park opened. They cut off the line and weren’t permitting guests to queue up when we first checked it out! Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Slinky Dog Dash, and Tower of Terror have all seen high wait times too throughout the days. In the other parks, we haven’t had too much trouble with the fact that FastPass+ is suspended, but you definitely feel that absence in Hollywood Studios. Much of your time really will be spent waiting in line if you’re looking to ride those popular attractions. Want to see more wait times reports from Hollywood Studios? Click here! But, there are SOME things you can do to work around these problems! All is not lost if you DO want to head to Hollywood Studios! We’ve already figured out a few ways you can solve some of these pain points. Galaxy’s Edge Take A Different Route If you’re nervous about crowds, keep a map handy and be prepared to be flexible! It’s always a good idea to have a back-up plan or route if you see that some areas are packed with people. It is hard to predict! Wednesday, Galaxy’s Edge was SLAMMED at park open, but Thursday it was relatively empty while Toy Story Land took the brunt of things in the early hours. Be ready to pivot if you get where you’re going and things look wild. Like we mentioned, Sunset Boulevard might be the place to be in the mornings (even though this street does lead to a dead end!). Wait Times May Wane At the End of the Day In general, we’ve noticed that wait times decline throughout the day. This is due to that no park-hopping rule right now. Guests flood those popular ride lines first thing in the morning, but since the park isn’t getting a fresh influx of guests throughout the day, everyone’s pretty much ridden what they want to (except for, possibly, Rise of the Resistance) by the end of the day. So wait times go down. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway definitely has long lines consistently, but the difference between a two-hour wait at park open and a 50-minute wait at park close can be pretty significant. If you see that an attraction has a crazy wait, give it some time and come back later. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Manage Expectations As for Rise of the Resistance, don’t set the expectation that you WILL get on the ride. Unfortunately, you might not. Try your best by being ready to pounce on that boarding group the second each time window opens. If you run into any glitches, take screenshots of the situation — showing that you were trying to get that group the minute it came available and the app kicked you out, or wouldn’t recognize you were in the park, etc — and reach out to a Guest Relations Cast Member. They might be able to help you. And if crowds make you anxious right now, consider holding off on heading to Hollywood Studios. We’ve had pretty “magical” days in the other three parks. In Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom, many times you don’t see anyone around you and wait times are low. But if crowds are a concern or if low wait times are a big factor in coming to Disney World right now, you’ll have to re-work your expectations for Hollywood Studios at the moment. Smugglers Run Things WILL Change; So Stay Tuned But remember, these are just our observations so far, and during the first days the park has been open! Wait times and crowds might lighten up once the novelty of being back in the parks wears off and the initial rush of people slows. If you’re flexible with when you can visit, it may make sense to wait a few weeks until things stabilize — which we anticipate they will. We’ll be sure to share updates and more tips as we learn them, so keep an eye on DFB for the latest. To see what Disney CEO Bob Chapek said about reopening wait times, click here! Starbucks has become a BIG part of our Disney park experience! We usually can’t start our day without stopping by Main Street Bakery to pick up a quick pick-me-up like the new Endless Yum cold brew! Endless Yum at Magic Kingdom Unfortunately, you can’t Mobile Order your Starbs at the theme parks and you’ll have to wait in line. But over at Disney Springs. you can use the Starbucks app to place your order ahead of time and skip the queue entirely! YAY! We’ve known about using this little mobile order trick at both Disney Springs’ Starbucks locations for some time (there’s one on the West Side as well as in the Market Place)! Mobile Order Pick-Up at West Side Starbucks But check out what we found on the Starbucks mobile order app today — they’ve added their popular drinkware to their mobile order menu! Cups were showing up at both Disney Springs’ Starbucks locations earlier today, but right now they only to be available at the West Side location! Here’s what was in stock at the Market Place Starbuck this morning before it disappeared — we’ll keep checking back to see if they replenish their stock! Screenshot of Starbucks App But still — it’s pretty exciting to know you can now get your tumblers, water bottles, and reusable cups to-go! This new feature will come in super-handy if you’re trying to hunt down a particular style! Plus you can contactlessly pay for your items and just go pick ’em up! A special sticker will print out when you place your order and a barista will retrieve the design you’ve selected, pack it up, and place it in the mobile pick-up area for you to grab. Screenshot of Starbucks App So before you place your order for the Campfire Cold Brew or Picnic Punch, check to see if there’s a reusable Starbucks cup you want and add it to your order! Of course, we’re still pretty obsessed with our Color-Changing Confetti Cups we picked up back in May, but we’re huge subscribers to the popular belief you can never have enough cool Starbucks drinkware! Check out the new Jungle Cruise Cookie Jar we just spotted here! Do you collect Starbucks cups? Let us know if you’re excited they’re now available on the Starbucks app in the comments below! Ready to assemble your family for a fantastic movie night? You’ll definitely want to check out these tips to host the most MARVELous Black Panther Disney+ adventure right in your living room! Black Panther Movie Night Milkshakes and Pennants, © Disney Family | Oh Happy Day It may not be as exciting as meeting Black Panther in person, or as amazing as it will be to see Black Panther in action at Avengers Campus in Disneyland, but until Avengers Campus plans are back in full swing and we can salute our favorite superhero from the Kingdom of Wakanda again, a Black Panther movie night will have to do! To host a truly fantastic movie night, though, you’ll need the perfect crafts and snacks, and we’ve got all the tips and tricks for you! First, Let’s Get Crafting! You can’t just watch Black Panther in all of his epic battles sidelines! You’ve got to make some pennants to cheer him on! Wakanda Forever Pennants, © Disney Family | Oh Happy Day All you need is some felt, markers, glue, and a few other items to make these beauties. It’s a pretty simple process. Just draw a shape on felt for the background of the pennants and cut those out. Then, make some designs in another color of felt and cut those out, and paste your wonderful work onto the background pennant pieces. Then, cut out an extra strip of felt to connect your pennant to a wooden dowel or some other type of flag-type stick. Black Panther Movie Night Crafts, © Disney | Oh Happy Day The sky (within the cloaking field) is the limit! We’d love to see some Shuri and Okoye pennants, or even some shout outs to W’Kabi and M’Baku! Check out the Disney Family website for a full set of instructions. If you’re not artistically inclined, or you don’t have all of the items at home, you can definitely work with what you’ve got! Print out some cool Black Panther designs from online, paste them onto paper plates, and use paper towel tubes as your pennant holders! Now For the Real Treat – Movie Milkshakes! A movie night is totally INCOMPLETE without some fabulous snacks! And what’s better than some delicious milkshakes to complement a trip to a secret super technologically advanced superhero world? Black Panther Movie Night Blackberry Milkshakes, © Disney Family | Oh Happy Day These blackberry milkshakes are inspired by (but certainly more tasty than) Black Panther’s amazing Kimoyo beads! The recipe here is actually pretty simple. Mix some vanilla ice cream, milk, and blackberries together until smooth. Top with whipped cream and crushed chocolate sandwich cookies, and you’ll be on a path straight past the trees and into a milkshake paradise! Milkshake Ingredients and Tools, © Disney | Oh Happy Day Check out the Disney Family site for the full instructions. The only thing that would make this better is Black Panther ice cream from Ample Hills, but sadly it’s sold out at the moment. For some extra fun, you can give your snack all of the power of T’Challa with a paper Black Panther necklace! Black Panther Milkshake Craft, © Disney Family | Oh Happy Day All the villains in the world can’t stop you from hosting the best Black Panther Movie night ever! Delicious treats, adorable crafts, and an amazing superhero movie – how could you go wrong? Be sure to check out all of the newest things coming to Disney+ in August so you can start planning your next fantastic movie night! What Marvel movie is your FAVORITE to watch on family movie night? What better way to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Disneyland than creating one of Walt’s favorite recipes at home – Chili and Beans. Not one for highly seasoned or spicy cuisine, Walt enjoyed food that was hardy and filling, and this dish fit the bill. Several variations of Walt’s personal Chili and Beans recipe can be found in the Walt Disney Archives – with the first recipe dating back to around 1958. Over the years, Disney chefs have refined the recipe for park guests, and today we are sharing the recipe served at Carnation Café at Disneyland park. Their version adds a bit more seasoning than the original recipe from Walt … for a subtle, spicy kick! When you dish up this bowl of nostalgia, be sure to serve with saltine crackers – just the way Walt liked it. Walt’s Chili and Beans from Carnation Café at Disneyland Park Serves 6 to 8 Ingredients: 1/4 cup olive oil, divided3/4 pounds beef stew meat1 small onion, diced1 medium green pepper, diced4 cloves garlic, minced1 pound ground beef1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder1 tablespoon onion powder 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper3 tablespoons tomato paste 2 plum tomatoes, diced 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes 2 tablespoons beef base 1 1/2 cups water1 (14.5 ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drainedCoarse salt, to tasteGarnish: 1/2 cup sour cream1 cup shredded cheddar cheese2 diced tomatoes, for garnishDirections: Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in large Dutch oven, over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add stew meat and sauté for 10 minutes, until meat is browned on all sides. Remove stew meat from pan and set aside. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to pan, heat for 3 minutes over medium heat.Add onions and green pepper. Sauté 8-10 minutes, until soft. Add garlic and sauté one minute longer, until garlic is fragrant. Add ground beef. Cook, stirring occasionally to break up large chunks of beef, for 10-12 minutes, until beef is no longer pink. Drain excess fat. Return stew meat to the Dutch oven with ground beef mixture. Add ground cumin, chili powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, tomato paste, fresh, diced tomatoes, beef base, and water. Bring chili to a simmer. Cover and simmer over low heat for 3 hours, until stew meat is tender. Add pinto beans. Simmer for 10 minutes, until beans are warm. Season with salt, as needed. Garnish with sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and diced tomatoes.Note: This recipe has been converted from a larger quantity in the restaurant kitchens. The flavor profile may vary from the restaurant’s version. As a reminder while preparing this recipe, please supervise children who are helping or nearby. Click here for a print-at-home version of this recipe. On this day, 65 years ago, a new form of entertainment came into the world. Successful movie producer and animation pioneer, Walt Disney, had long dreamt of a place where family members of all ages could have fun together. Drawing on his own vivid imagination, as well as those of his talented colleagues, Walt created a magical place that has been beloved since opening day. A star-studded television special broadcasted the inaugural day to the world. 18 attractions were unveiled, many of which still thrill guests, including the Disneyland Railroad, Jungle Cruise and Fantasyland favorites King Arthur Carrousel, Peter Pan’s Flight and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Disneyland quickly generated a loyal following with more guests arriving enthusiastically in the days that followed, as well as carrying word of this magical place to others. Soon it was the de rigueur place to be seen by celebrities, dignitaries and even heads of state. Over the years, the park has evolved, with the first major expansion in 1959, which included three new state-of-the-art attractions (including the world’s first tubular steel roller coaster). Other notable expansions included 1966 with New Orleans Square, Mickey’s Toontown in 1993, and most recently, the successful opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2019. Today, the Disneyland Resort encompasses two theme parks, three resort hotels and the Downtown Disney District. But beyond the attractions, the sparkling façade of Sleeping Beauty Castle and the iconic snacks of corn dogs, popcorn and churros, or perhaps embedded in them, many guests find a treasured nostalgia, and this love of Disneyland is handed down from generation to generation as a beloved gift. To commemorate the occasion, “A Pre-Opening Report from Disneyland” is now available on Disney+. Originally aired on July 13, 1955, Walt provides a final look at the many details necessary to ensure that the park will be ready. He begins by showing the audience a large map of the site, then introduces Winston Hibler, who provides a behind-the-scenes tour of how Studio technicians went about designing and building the unusual rides and shows about to open. With the eternal optimism that is the heart of Disneyland, we look forward to welcoming you back and celebrating this milestone together soon. View the full article
