  1. Recently, a Disney executive noted that Disney Cruise Line would likely be the last of Disney’s businesses to resume. Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Dream So far, Disney has suspended all departures through mid-December, and has provided lots of flexibility in terms of cruise date modifications for its guests. Now, Disney has made further changes to some of its policies for future cruisers. Two important changes were made today to the current policies regarding Disney Cruise Line. 1. Final Payment First, for all sailings through March 2021, the due date for final payments has now been temporarily extended until 60 days prior to sailing “for Guests booked in unrestricted stateroom categories.” Captain Minnie ©Disney So, if you haven’t reached your final payment due date yet, you can now wait until 60 days prior to sailing to make that final payment for your vacation. 2. Cancellation Fee Schedule Second, Disney has announced that their cancellation fee schedules have been temporarily relaxed for sailings through March 2021. Specifically the schedule has been relaxed as follows: For Guests booked in non-Suite and Concierge categories — the cancellation fee schedule has been temporarily relaxed from beginning as early as 119 days prior to sailing to beginning 59 days prior to sailing. For Guests booked in Suite and Concierge categories — the cancellation fee schedule has been temporarily relaxed from beginning 90 days prior to sailing to beginning 60 days prior to sailing. If you’ve got a reservation for an Inside, Outside or Verandah Category with Restrictions, however, those remain nonrefundable and nontransferable. Be sure to check with Disney or your travel professional regarding exactly what cancellation fees will be applicable to you. Disney Wonder These changes are in addition to Disney’s current cruise date flexibility policy, which allows guests with cruises scheduled to sail on or before May 31, 2021, who booked their trip before October 31, 2020, to change their sail date up to 15 days prior to embarkation. We’ll keep checking for more updates regarding Disney Cruise Line, so be sure to check back for all the latest news! Looking to plan another Disney vacation? 2. Since the Walt Disney World theme parks reopened a few months ago, we’ve seen various changes including the introduction of systems like the Park Pass Reservation System and the suspension of Fastpass+. Christmas At Magic Kingdom The holiday experience at Disney World has also changed significantly. Just recently, we shared some updates with you about the upcoming Christmastime entertainment and offerings that will be available at Disney World this year, but there’s also quite a few Christmas staples that guests won’t be able to experience. If you’re thinking of heading to Disney World this year to celebrate some of the holiday season, things will definitely look different. Here are the top 3 things you need to know before you head to Disney to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year: 1. It’s Still Pretty Expensive Since the parks reopened, there have been significant changes made to the Disney experience, including the inability to park hop, and the continued closure of certain restaurants. While there are some discounts available for Disney Resort hotels, ticket packages, and tickets alone for Florida Residents and others, they are not as significant as they could be given the restrictions in place. Disney’s Yacht Club Resort For example, even if you’re a Florida Resident and you take advantage of the Florida Resident Disney Magic Flex Ticket offer, a 3-day ticket is still going to cost you $174 plus tax ($58 per day, plus tax) per ticket. ©Disney, Florida Resident Magic Ticket Last year, Disney offered Seasonal Flex Tickets to Florida Residents, subject to some similar block out dates and a 3-day ticket was $249 plus tax ($83 per day, plus tax). So, that’s a difference of about $75 compared to the tickets available this year. But, last year’s Flex tickets were actually available for use for a much longer period of time — all the way until February of 2020 — as compared to this year’s Flex tickets which must be used by December 18th. Ticket and Transportation Center So, while there are discounts available, they may not be as much as you would expect given all of the changes that have been made to the park experience. Overall, Disney still remains a decently expensive experience and it’s still something you’ll want to appropriately plan and budget for. 2. It’ll Be More Crowded Than You May Expect When Disney World first reopened, we saw some very low crowds, but, over time the crowd levels have changed. Although Disney has been utilizing Park Pass reservations to limit the crowd levels in the parks and promote social distancing, we’ve seen crowds gradually increasing and wait times getting longer, and one park in particular — Disney’s Hollywood Studios — has consistently felt more crowded to us. Labor Day Weekend Crowds On Labor Day weekend, Park Passes were completely booked for all four parks for all types of guests for a period of time, although some availability opened up right near the end. When we visited Hollywood Studios during that holiday weekend, we found that the park was definitely better than a “normal” high capacity day pre-park closures, but it was definitely not a ghost town. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run on Labor Day Weekend Overall, from what we’ve seen since the reopening, the crowds tend to slow down after the morning rush is over. The crowds also seem to vary depending on what area of the park you’re in. Cinderella Castle Based on our experience, it’s been possible to keep your distance from others, but you may find places where crowds are heavier, so you’ll just want to keep that in mind. During the holiday season, we expect Disney World will likely be more crowded. We’re already seeing Park Pass reservations filling up for some guests and certain parks for Halloween and Thanksgiving. Screenshot from Disney Park Pass Availability Calendar — Theme Park Tickets Guests We anticipate a similar situation will occur with dates surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Eve. So, if you’re planning to visit during the holiday season, we highly recommend that you book your Park Pass reservations as soon as possible! Over at Disney Springs, where a reservation is not required for entry, and we’ve also seen crowds steadily rising. People Headed to Homecomin’ So, while we anticipate that crowds will not reach the levels they normally do during the holiday season (hopefully we’ll avoid that shoulder-to-shoulder, sea of people experience) they will likely be more crowded than you expect. You’ll likely find pockets of space as you walk around the parks, certain parks or certain areas within them may be emptier than others, and crowd levels may lessen in the afternoons, but you can likely still expect to see some pretty high crowds during the morning hours at the parks and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios especially. 3. It’ll Be Missing Some Holiday Favorites If you had your heart set on munching on some cookies while enjoying Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, unfortunately, you won’t be able to experience that this year. Certain special Christmas events including Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in Magic Kingdom and Candlelight Processional in EPCOT have been canceled for this year. Epcot Candlelight Processional While some holiday events, like EPCOT’s Festival of the Holidays will be returning, MANY of the special Christmas entertainment we know and love will be on hiatus. First, the Castle Dream Lights will NOT be returning this year. Instead, the Castle will be “transformed with a rotating series of designs” through projections and video mapping technology. Cinderella Castle Dream Lights Additionally, the GIANT gingerbread displays will not return to the Disney Resort hotels this year. That means no giant displays at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, or Disney’s Beach Club Resort. So, if checking out that incredible gingerbread carousel at the Beach Club was a must-do for your holiday trip, you’ll want to keep that in mind. BoardWalk Inn Gingerbread Display And, while Santa will be making some socially distanced appearances in the parks and Disney Springs, you won’t be able to have a personal, up-close meet and greet encounter with him. Santa and Mrs. Claus in Epcot’s American Adventure Pavilion While Disney has announced some holiday entertainment that will be coming to Disney World, some of your holiday traditions in Disney may have to change this year. We’ll still be able to celebrate Christmastime in Disney World, but it will look and feel a bit different. 4. We LOVE getting behind-the-scenes peeks of the Disney parks which is why we are excited about the debut of the Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Disney+ series. This new show from National Geographic is all about caring for the Animal Kingdom’s incredible animals!! Disney’s Animal Kingdom Speaking of which, we are now learning that there is a NEW animal addition at Disney’s Animal Kingdom!! On September 22, a new BABY female Masai giraffe was born early in the morning Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park!!! (Just LOOK at that face!) Disney Parks Blog This sweet baby was born to Mara, a Masai giraffe who you have seen on the reserve while Kilimanjaro Safaris! In fact, Mara gave birth to her first calf Jabari within Kilimanjaro Safaris last year!! Kilimanjaro Safaris The birth of her new calf also serves as the second successful pairing with the calf’s dad George through the Species Survival Plan, a program that works to ensure responsible breeding of endangered species. How great is that?! Mara’s new baby weighs 156 pounds, is strong and healthy, and reportedly rather FEISTY!! (You go, girl!) She is yet-to-be-named and will stay backstage for a time before joining the rest of the herd in the near future. 16. We’re not sure what we miss the most from the pre-closure days of Disney World, but fireworks are definitely up there on our list. Magic Kingdom Fireworks Disney World reopened in early July with a lot of changes to help keep guests and Cast Members safe. One of the most high-profile changes was the suspension of fireworks and nighttime spectaculars — and they remain suspended even now. How long until we’ll see the sky above Disney World light up with fireworks again? Here’s what we know. The reasoning behind such a drastic decision was to keep guests and Cast Members safe during the reopening phases of Disney World. And since fireworks tend to draw a SUPER large crowd (if you’ve ever been stuck in the mass exodus after Happily Ever After you KNOW what we mean!), it’s hard to maintain social distancing, which is extremely important in current times. Epcot Forever Fireworks Getting rid of fireworks means it’s easier to keep guests distanced and safe. Disney isn’t the only place in Florida to cancel summer fireworks. For instance, the Orlando mayor opted to cancel the city’s 4th of July fireworks display in the interest of protecting folks from the global health crisis. Heavy Fireworks Crowds Still, it’s been months since the reopening, and Florida has seen some positive trends in the number of cases in the state. So, what clues do we have about the return of fireworks? Let’s take a look. Fireworks Construction First off, we’ve seen some construction on the fireworks barges going on in EPCOT in Disney World! If that work is being done, it means that the fireworks are still moving forward (albeit slowly!) and will be fired off for guests at…some point! Crew in World Showcase Lagoon We’ve seen a permit that was filed for work on the Fireworks Bunker in Magic Kingdom, multiple permits for work on the various structures for EPCOT fireworks, and we even saw crews doing some work out on the barges in EPCOT’s World Showcase Lagoon! Needless to say, work is definitely being done on the fireworks to get them ready — we’re just not sure WHEN they will be ready! Click here for PICS of the World Showcase Lagoon work! And the BIGGEST step forward in fireworks returning to Disney World is the fireworks TESTING that’s been happening this week in EPCOT! Guests staying at nearby resorts were warned of fireworks testing…and the resulting noise! © @kellielizabethharris So…we’re thinking the upcoming EPCOT nighttime spectacular, Harmonious, is definitely moving FORWARD! What We Can Learn from Upcoming Events There are some things we can glean from how Disney is handling upcoming events. Speaking of Harmonious, it was originally set to debut in Spring 2020, but has since been met with delays due to the park closures. ©Disney A revised date has not yet been announced, so we’re wondering if — based on the testing — ASAP (AKA, still in 2020) is the plan for the debut of the new fireworks show. If so, that means that Disney would need to resume fireworks by the end of the year, if not before. On the other hand, though, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, which typically runs on select nights from mid-August to early November, was canceled completely due to some key parts of the parties — including fireworks — being suspended. Shortly after, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, which typically runs through the end of December, followed suit. Halloween Fireworks at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party If the inability to display nighttime spectaculars like fireworks was a major driver for this decision, Disney may be anticipating that fireworks won’t be possible through the fall, or even through the rest of 2020. That said, we’ve rarely experienced fireworks testing in Disney World without the upcoming show being imminently debuted. Why disturb guests in surrounding hotels if you don’t intend to run the show soon? Click here to learn more about the cancellation of Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. The Return of Fireworks in Shanghai and Tokyo Finally, we can take a look at the fact that fireworks have returned to both Shanghai Disney Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort. The timelines for these reopenings might give us a clue as to how things could play out for Disney World. Shanghai Disneyland Fireworks Testing Shanghai Disney closed on January 25th and reopened on May 11th. Tokyo Disney followed suit with the parks closing on February 29th and reopening on July 1st. Both closures lasted roughly four months, with the Shanghai closure being a few days shorter than Disney World, and the Tokyo closure being a few days longer. ©Disney Tests were spotted with the Shanghai fireworks in late April, but the displays did not come back when the park first reopened. Instead, trial runs began in Shanghai in late July (roughly three months after opening), and fireworks returned to Tokyo Disney in early September (two months after opening). It’s possible that Disney World could follow a similar timeline. Want to learn about the recent return of fireworks in Tokyo Disney? Click here! So, when will fireworks return? With the fireworks testing we’re seeing, it seems that Disney World could be following a similar timeline to Shanghai Disney and Tokyo Disney Resort. This gives Harmonious a few months to still meet the 2020 deadline, and would explain why Disney did not want to run the holiday party fireworks shows — they would get in the way of not only ensuring the safety of guests but also with starting up trial runs of the regularly scheduled nighttime shows. Happily Ever After Ultimately, though, it’s still totally up in the air (no pun intended!). If Disney knows the plan, they sure aren’t sharing that info with anyone! Keep in mind that Disney World may NOT follow the same timeline as Tokyo and Shanghai, and the current fireworks testing could just be a step on the path to Harmonious debuting at a much later date. Any number of things could affect the return of fireworks — especially changes in the global health crisis. So, stay tuned to DFB for the latest updates.
