  2. It may not officially be winter yet, but I’m sure plenty of you are already dreaming about escaping the cold that came so early this year! To get your mind, at least, to a warmer place, here’s a look at five tropical destinations to add to your Disney cruise bucket list … 1. Castaway Cay, Bahamas If you’ve been on a Disney cruise to the Bahamas or Caribbean, chances are you’ve been to Castaway Cay. It’s our private island in the Bahamas, and in my humble opinion, the most spectacular place you’ll ever visit. Here, the magic of Disney meets the beauty of the tropics, resulting in an experience words cannot do justice. 2. Tortola, British Virgin Islands Just announced as one of our newest destinations, Tortola is a picture-perfect island with lush green mountains, white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. This Caribbean gem, part of the British Virgin Islands, is a stop on most of our Eastern Caribbean cruises in 2016. 3. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands Almost all of our Western Caribbean voyages visit Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman Islands, boasting some of the best tropical weather in the world with an average winter temperature of 75° F. Formed of limestone and surrounded by coral reefs, the island is known for its unique terrain, clear water and spectacular diving. 4. St. Thomas and St. John, US Virgin Islands St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands is a call on most of our Eastern Caribbean cruises and the gateway to the equally beautiful neighboring island of St. John. Both have a unique character all their own, with St. Thomas offering excellent dining and shopping and St. John two-thirds covered by an unspoiled national park. 5. San Juan, Puerto Rico San Juan is a stop on select Eastern Caribbean cruises and our homeport for Southern Caribbean voyages. An adventure in the rainforest and a stroll through charming Old San Juan, with its blue cobblestone streets, fortified walls and colorful colonial architecture, are not to be missed on a visit to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. 4. Who’s ready for cookies, cocoa, and holiday cheer? I sure am! So I’m giddy with excitement that it’s almost time for another season of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party! This Magic Kingdom Park tradition kicks off Friday, November 7, and this year the annual event gets an extra dose of holiday magic with “A Frozen Holiday Wish,” additions to “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade,” new character dance parties, and opportunities to visit with not only Santa Claus, but Santa Goofy and “Sandy Claws” too! “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade” includes lots of Disney characters, along with a holly jolly cast of snowmen, reindeer, elves, and of course, Santa Claus. Ralph and Vanellope from “Wreck-It Ralph” are new to the parade this year, as is a procession of visitors from the Kingdom of Arendelle with Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf from “Frozen.” The “Holiday Hootenanny!” boot-scoots into the Diamond Horseshoe in Frontierland, where you can kick up your heels for some down-home holiday fun with the Country Bears, Clarabelle Cow, Horace Horsecollar, and Clara Cluck. And over at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café in Tomorrowland, Club Tinsel becomes the top spot to get down when Phineas and Ferb show up. What are they going to do today? The brothers are going to rock their Christmas vacation with the holiday cheeriest dance party this side of Danville! Christmas has come to Storybook Circus, too, and some of your favorite Disney pals are all dressed up for the occasion, including Minnie, Daisy, Donald, Scrooge McDuck, and of course, Santa Goofy. And what’s this? Pumpkin king Jack Skellington has been so inspired by everything in Christmastown, he wants to be part of the holiday celebration, too. You’ll find Jack in Storybook Circus – dressed in his finest “Sandy Claws” suit and ready to meet the boys and girls of every age! Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is held on select nights, November 7 – December 19, and is separate from regular Magic Kingdom Park admission. Tickets are available now. Get yours before dates start selling out. 5. When you’re up for Italian fare in a Bavarian setting, there really is only one place to go… The Pinocchio Village Haus in Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland! Learn About: Pinocchio Village HausMagic Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsThe main food news from Pinocchio’s as of late has mostly revolved around a rotation of slush beverages paying tribute to various characters from the Pinocchio film, such as the Jiminy Cricket Slush, and the current Lemonade and Blue Raspberry Slushes (said to be “favorites” of Pinocchio and the Blue Fairy themselves… according to the Pinocchio Village Haus menu, that is ). Other than that, the menu itself hasn’t had much of an overhaul since it changed over from pizza to flatbreads over two years ago. While that remains the case, there were a couple of changes on my recent visit, including a new side item that I couldn’t resist. The changes are so subtle that they’re pretty easy to miss on the scrolling menu, so it’s a good thing Cast Members hand printed menus to guests in order to keep things moving at this always hoppin’ spot. Pinocchio Village Haus printed menu For starters, the Barbecue Chicken Flatbread is now a Barbecue Beef Flatbread. A Spicy Chicken Sandwich has been added in case someone in your group isn’t in the mood for flatbreads or a sub sandwich, but that didn’t replace anything from the menu. (AJ tried the chicken sandwich on her last visit and will have a review of that for you soon.) I almost didn’t notice a small change to the side items: the Bread Sticks have been replaced with Pesto Knots. Since I love the Garlic Knots served at a local pizza place, I had to give the Pesto Knots a try. When I received my order, the first thing I noticed wasn’t the appearance, actually… although the braided bread does look pretty stellar. Pesto Knots No, the very first thing to greet my senses was the fragrance of all that melted butter on top of the bread, coupled with a generous amount of garlic. I was itching to dig in because they smelled so good! But — lo and behold — since I went against my own advice and arrived at noon, finding a table took some time. Ultimately I had to surrender my search for a table overlooking the Happiest Cruise that ever sailed: “it’s a small world.” (FYI: If you see a cast member standing behind a “reserved” sign on a rope, all you need to do is show them that you have a tray of food and they’ll let you sit in the “reserved” section — it’s Disney’s way of keeping people from saving seats while their family member(s) wait in line for food.) View of the Small World loading area But at long last, I found a seat and it was nothing but me and the Pesto Knots. Pesto Knots Since “pesto” is in the name, I was expecting a lot more green — something more akin to a regular pesto sauce, similar to what’s found on the Cheesy Pesto Bread at Landscape of Flavors. Instead, these knots had a rather light sprinkling of the basil, but still plenty of garlic-y goodness. So really, it’s all about that glistening, melted butter — and it is heavenly. Butter on the Pesto Knots Don’t get me wrong, the bread itself was really good — golden brown on the outside, nice and soft on the inside. Inside a Pesto Knot But much like popcorn at the movies, this whole thing is a conduit for the yummy piles and pockets of butter; or, in this case, butter and garlic. I barely registered the presence of the basil, other than the appearance, but the knots were delicious anyhow. I’d say the only thing these lack is a side of marinara for dipping. The Pesto Knots are great on their own, but slap some marinara down with these things and I would seriously consider visiting Pinocchio’s on just about every Magic Kingdom visit — honestly something I would not have considered before. That said, I’m sure I’ll be back for them at some point. Because the bread is so filling, the Pesto Knots strike me as a bit more than a snack or side; they’re almost a light lunch on their own. So, while the Blue Fairy herself may opt for a Slush, for me, it’s now all about the Pesto Knots! I guess she and I will just have to agree to disagree . 6. Family and food are two of the best things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season, and what better way to celebrate than on a vacation to Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa? In fact, Sunset Magazine recently voted Aulani as one of the “top ten warm-weather Thanksgiving getaways.” So envision your ‘ohana spending November 27 floating down the Waikolohe Stream or exploring the Menehune Adventure Trail and then enjoying a delicious array of food and fun at the Aulani Thanksgiving Feast. 9. Didn’t get your fill of Halloween fun this year? Fret not, friends! Because we’ve got one more treat for you from the season of tricks… On October 30th and 31st, Disney Resort Cast Members at resorts around the World competed in pumpkin decorating contests. I got to check out the displays at the Contemporary Resort and Port Orleans — Riverside, and wanted to share some of the fun with you today! 10. A Disneyland Resort vacation goes way beyond the theme parks. A stay at a Disneyland Resort hotel is as much a part of the experience as a ride on Space Mountain! Between Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, there are many options for staying in the magic. But why choose a Disneyland Resort hotel for your vacation? I’ve got ten reasons! 1. More time to play All Disneyland Resort hotel guests enjoy admission to select attractions, stores, entertainment and dining locations in Disneyland or Disney California Adventure parks for one full hour before the parks open to the general public on select days! 2. A warm welcome Everyone knows that a stay in a Disneyland Resort hotel begins with a warm “Welcome!” from the cast members at the front desk. At Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, more than 50 of these cast members have learned to say “welcome” in 10 different languages to make all guests feel at home. “Guests visit the Disneyland Resort Hotels from all over the world,” says Guest Services Manager Brian Elling. “When a cast member says ‘welcome’ in a guest’s own language, it creates an instant connection with the guest and puts them at ease.” 3. Surf’s Up! Did you know that the PCH Grill at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel is the only dining location at the Disneyland Resort where you can enjoy a meal with Mickey Mouse? The Surf’s Up! Mickey and Friends Breakfast is an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast experience, and seeing Mickey Mouse himself dressed in his beachy best is a perfect way to start surfing your way through a fantastic day at the Disneyland Resort. “You definitely get to have a full experience with our characters during the breakfast,” says PCH Grill Area Manager Stacey Edwards. “Every guest gets to see Mickey in our photo location when they come in, and while they’re eating, guests can even get up and dance with the characters!” 4. Closer to the magic Staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel puts you just steps away from all there is to do at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks and the Downtown Disney District. Plus, you’re surrounded by all the special Disney details that make the Disneyland Resort such a magical place to be – you never have to leave the Happiest Place on Earth until it’s time to go home! 5. Get shipwrecked at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar Thirsty travelers over 21 years of age can order a Shipwreck on the Rocks or Krakatoa Punch at this tropical oasis at the Disneyland Hotel. But be careful, because the tiki gods might just create a fearsome lightning storm (complete with thunder and a sinking ship in a bottle) or cause a volcano eruption. “We’re ex-skipper captains from the Jungle Cruise,” explains Bartender Roy Hanzal. “We kept wrecking the boats, so Trader Sam sent us over here to serve drinks to the guests instead.” 6. Kids have a getaway of their own Pinocchio’s Workshop offers supervised play and themed activities each evening for children (ages 5 – 12) of hotel guests, providing parents an opportunity to have their own adventures. This fun-filled child activity center is located at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa but is open to guests staying at any of the three hotels of the Disneyland Resort. 7. A ‘Signature’ experience While every guest room at a Disneyland Resort hotel includes special Disney touches, the six themed Signature Suites at the Disneyland Hotel fully immerse guests in the magic of Disneyland. From the replica of Davy Jones’ Dead Man’s Chest in the Pirates of the Caribbean Suite to a twinkling Tinker Bell turning on the lights of the Sleeping Beauty Castle model in the Fairy Tale Suite, it would take much longer than one night to see all the details in these extraordinary suites. 8. Something special for fitness fanatics While a walk in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks is a great way to stay in shape during a vacation, a power walk before a park opens to the public is a special treat. The early-morning Get Up and Go Power Walk through Disney California Adventure Park and Fitness Fusion class at the outdoor fireplace at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa are open to guests at all three hotels. 9. See more with a tour The Happiest Hotel on Earth tour at the Disneyland Hotel teaches guests about the history and heritage of the hotel, while the Art of the Craft tour at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa shows the influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement on the hotel. These tours are complimentary and available on select days to all guests, including those not staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel, though reservations are encouraged. 10. Time for a bedtime story Everyone loves a good story — and there’s nothing quite like having your own personal storyteller at bedtime. Guests cuddle up with blankets and gather in the rocking chairs around the stone fireplace in the lobby of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa to hear Tales from the Hearth. It’s a great way for the whole family to wind down after a day at the parks. But if you miss it, no fear: just turn to the designated channel on your TV at any of the three Disneyland Resort hotels to hear Disney’s Princess Story Time. What better way to have sweet dreams? Special thanks to my fellow cast member, Madeline Des Jardins, for providing these great tips! 13. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party returns to Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort on November 7, 2014. I took my son to one of the parties last year and he loved it. We watched the fireworks above Cinderella Castle, rode many attractions and enjoyed hot chocolate in Adventureland. Since this year’s parties are only a week away, here is a look at some new products that will be offered for guests. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be featured on a unique retail MagicBand created especially for the event. Presented in a decorative gift box, the limited-edition graphic MagicBand will have an edition size of 5,000 and will retail for $29.95 (plus tax). Guests must present one of the following for the MagicBand to be linked to at the time of purchase: valid theme park admission, Memory Maker card or an active MagicBand. Guests will also find Mickey and Minnie on some apparel items for both adults and kids. Finally, the Disney Pin Team is releasing a special jumbo-sized pin that features the world famous Disney characters joining Santa Claus in his sleigh. The pin will have an edition size of 500. Look for other limited release and limited edition pins at the event that are shaped like ornaments. These items will be released in the following locations at Magic Kingdom Park during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Parties: Emporium – Main Street, U.S.A. (pins, apparel and MagicBand)Mickey’s Star Traders – Tomorrowland (pins and apparel)Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe – Liberty Square (pins and apparel)Frontier Trading Post – Frontierland (pins)Big Top Souvenirs – Storybook Circus / New Fantasyland (MagicBand)Dates for this year’s parties are November 7, 10, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21 and 30, and December 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 19. For ticket information, please click here. One of my favorite things from last year was watching Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade with my son. I loved those toy soldiers as seen in the image I took last year while in Liberty Square. My son waved to all of the characters as they passed us; it was such a nice holiday memory. 14. “Take Me Out to the Ball Game…” Learn About: Casey’s CornerMagic Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsOkay, we know… with the San Francisco Giants winning the World Series, baseball season is officially behind us for the year. But there’s one place where it’s always baseball season, and that’s Casey’s Corner in Magic Kingdom! And what’s a baseball game without a hot dog… or three ? I know you agree. Let’s head in to the quintessential hot dog joint in Disney World for a bite. Casey’s Corner AtmosphereBefore you even step in the front doors, you’re “greeted” by a turn-of-the-century baseball player. Casey’s Corner baseball player Casey’s Corner baseball player Once you enter, the baseball theme really kicks into high gear, down to the Cast Member baseball player costumes (which might be my favorite costumes just about anywhere at Disney World). Casey’s Corner Vintage artwork and props (including ads for Coca-Cola) line the walls and top the shelves just about everywhere you look. Vintage Coke Advertisement Art at Casey’s Corner Atmosphere Details at Casey’s Corner The indoor seating does its best to place you outside, giving the impression that you’re at an outdoor ballpark. The scoreboard reflects a score that is much to the chagrin of the citizens of Mudville, thanks to the legendary strikeout of “Casey at the Bat.” Scoreboard There may be “no joy in Mudville,” since Mighty Casey struck out, but there are plenty of pennants supporting the team, anyway. Mudville Banners Admittedly, though, it feels a lot less “outdoorsy” since the bleacher seating and TV screens showing Disney baseball cartoons were removed to add more traditional tables and chairs. Indoor seating Yes, Casey’s gets super busy and the tables do a lot to improve the seating situation. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the charm and tradition of those old bleachers. Old indoor seating area Stepping outside, tables are topped with cheerful red and white umbrellas. Outdoor seating Aside from hot dogs, Casey’s is also known for providing some downright stellar views of Cinderella Castle. However, while the Magic Kingdom Hub is currently being refurbished (lasting into 2015), you’ll be looking at some green walls. Just pretend you’re at Fenway. Outdoor seating by Hub refurbishment But there’s little in the world that can’t be fixed — or at least greatly improved — by spending some time listening to a little ragtime, courtesy of Jim! Jim at the piano So, we’ve got our dogs, we’ve found our seats, and we’re ready to chow down! EatsBecause I love hot dogs (Seriously. LOVE ‘em.), we ordered every single one on the menu! Casey’s Corner menu Umm… with the exception of the regular, plain hot dog, that is. You can see a review of that here! Of course, if you do go for a plain dog, there’s still nothing keeping you from some extreme toppings, thanks to the great condiment bar featuring sauerkraut, onions, salsa, jalapeños, good ol’ ketchup and mustard, and YES…. PLASTIC CHEESE! Condiments station Sauerkraut Plastic Cheese First up: the Chili-Cheese Dog, topped with chili (naturally!) and a river of “melted cheddar,” which is nothing but a politically correct name for… you got it! Plastic Cheese! Chili-Cheese Hot Dog Plastic Cheese river And that’s it! It’s just a classic. The chili adds just a little hint of spice to the salty mix. This thing is a mess in the best way, so just grab a few extra napkins and embrace this bit of Americana. Chili-Cheese Hot Dog cross-section Next up to bat is the Barbecue Slaw Dog, which has been a staple at Casey’s since Gourmet Hot Dogs started hitting the scene more than a few years ago. So even though I’ve had it, oh, more than a couple of times (both at Casey’s and its other home at Fairfax Fare), I couldn’t resist grabbing one again. Barbecue Slaw Dog Topped with pulled barbecue pork and a heaping helping of coleslaw, the big question once you receive your order is exactly how to tackle it — it’s just gigantic, and you may be tempted to eat the pork and slaw off the hot dog first, just for the sake of logistics. But still, try to eat at least a few bites as-is, because this is a great combo. It’s weird, because I’m typically not a fan of mushing all sorts of food together on my plate, but somehow, this has just always worked. The cool tang of the slaw balances the mild spice of the barbecue so nicely. Couple that with the smoky hot dog, along with it’s “snap” for a little variety in the texture, and it’s easy to understand why this gourmet dog has survived since its introduction while others have come and gone. Barbecue Slaw Dog cross-section Our last “dog” isn’t actually a hot dog, but the Polish Sausage, topped with caramelized onions and stone-ground mustard. Polish Sausage I love the slight sweetness of caramelized onions on just about anything, so that’s a clear win, especially when paired with the spices of the sausage. I like the choice of stone-ground mustard, but it carries such a strong, distinct flavor that I found it to be overpowering here. It’s a great choice for the sausage as a condiment, but I think the pour was too generous, and took over the whole thing — at least for me. Condiment close-up Still, for those looking for a little something different at Casey’s, the sausage is a nice option, and I’m sure you could always ask for the mustard on the side (or, if mustard is your thing, then have at it and enjoy!). OverallCasey’s Corner. It’s practically a Disney World vacation rite of passage. Really, truly, my go-to at Casey’s remains the plain dog, topped just the way I like it at the condiments bar. But we wanted to show you the other options, ‘cuz those sure aren’t bad, either! My preference of the three is that Barbecue Slaw Dog, but any single one of them can offer a fun change of pace if you’ve visited Casey’s, like, a bajillion times… And no one would blame you for stepping up to the plate time and time again to enjoy this classic Disney World stop.
