Before all of the excitement of castles and characters at Walt Disney World Resort begins, you get to play the role of your family’s hero by booking the vacation of their dreams. One of the most magical parts of planning is surprising your little ones with news about the trip and seeing their faces light up with pure joy. Since young kids love to make a game out of everything, we thought of a few fun ideas on how to infuse a little pixie-dust when you let them in on the big surprise. Don’t forget to have the camera rolling to capture their reactions! Have you ever surprised your family with a Walt Disney World Resort vacation? Tell us how! #DisneyKids: Big Surprises for Little Kids by Jamie Langdon: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article

I’ve always known that the Tokyo Disney Resort had multiple popcorn flavors, but I really had no idea how serious the popcorn game there was until I saw it for myself. It’s really like its own micro-culture. People bring their collectable & rare resort buckets from the past and have them refilled, some people wear more than one popcorn bucket at a time, and we even had people offering us samples right out of their buckets. It’s seriously SO MUCH FUN! Popcorn is so popular, there’s even popcorn themed merchandise that lists some of the many flavors available. Look at this fun zipper pouch I bought: Delicious Explosion Popcorn! Popcorn Themed Zipper Pouch Another fun popcorn fact? Tokyo Disney has Roastie Toasties just like Disneyland here in Anaheim. Not all of the stands have them, but several do. To see more about Roastie Toasties & Disney Popcorn in the states, check out this great Popcorn Gallery post AJ did a while back. There’s also a fun little video on the Disney Parks Blog here. We made it a goal on our recent trip to Tokyo to try as many types of popcorn that we could. Although we missed a few, we did a pretty good job in our 4 days at the parks. Now, on to the flavors! Let’s start with one that I was a little unsure about but it ended up being my absolute favorite. So much so that we had it twice on our trip! Soy Sauce and Butter. It’s salty, savory and delicious. We found this cart at Tokyo Disneyland park. Soy Sauce & Butter Popcorn Cart You can see that this cart has its own little roastie toastie Christmas Clown; I love that he is dressed for the season. Also, please note that there are different souvenir popcorn buckets at each cart. Some carts sell more than one design, but most carry only one. There are several different seasonal buckets sold throughout the parks, making them really collectable. We noticed that very few people buy the “regular” paper popcorn containers. Most buy the souvenir bucket or bring one from home to refill. I really love that all souvenir popcorn buckets come with a long adjustable clip on strap so you can wear them like a purse. The strap is even long enough to wear cross body, which means hands free! Another fab reason to have a bucket with a strap is the fact that you can easily take your popcorn on attractions. Just close it up and it will be waiting for you after your ride. AND unlike the souvenir popcorn buckets we have here in the states, the lids on these ones seal tightly and STAY closed. The Minnie & Mickey Holiday popcorn bucket you see above was a pretty standard one that I saw all over the parks. Most of the buckets cost 1600 Yen which is equivalent to about $13.36. A few of them are fancier and a little bit pricier. The great thing about these, though, is that a refill costs only 520 Yen ($4.34) and you can bring any TOKYO DISNEY PURCHASED bucket from home for refills on every visit. Regular paper boxes of popcorn (similar to those we have here) cost 310 Yen ($2.59). I think these prices are fabulous!!! AND the popcorn carts?!? Just look at them, they’re all unique; many of them themed to the area in which they reside. Next up, Honey Popcorn featuring a Winnie the Pooh roastie toastie with Piglet as his assistant. I love that Pooh is standing on an upside down “Hunny” pot for a height boost! Honey Popcorn Honey was one of the first popcorn flavors that we tried. It’s sweet, but not overly sweet. I remember that Disneyland had honey popcorn for a little while a few years back. It was sold at a cart in between The Hungry Bear restaurant and the Winnie the Pooh attraction. I think I remember it being more of a caramel corn type of “candy” coating though. This one is done by seasoning. It was really tasty, but in the long run, I enjoyed the savory flavors over the sweet ones. The souvenir popcorn bucket available at this cart was of course Winnie the Pooh themed. It was a 1600 Yen bucket, so approximately $13.36 US. This cart smells delicious and is located near the very popular Pooh’s Hunny Hunt attraction. Honey popcorn must be just as popular as the attraction, because there are two honey popcorn carts right next to each other. Next we’ll head over to Tokyo Disney Sea (hopping back and forth in this post) for Salted Popcorn from the Mermaid Lagoon area. Salted Popcorn Salted popcorn is just regular popcorn, so we actually skipped purchasing this one. But, I do love love love the adorable Little Mermaid themed cart. This cart sold the Holiday souvenir popcorn bucket featuring Mickey and Minnie as gingerbread cookies. No roastie toastie here, but look at the gorgeous stained glass window and ceramic mosaic pieces inlaid in the cart. The attention to detail at Tokyo Disney Resort is unreal. Over at a very rainy Toon Town in Tokyo Disneyland, we found this fun Caramel Popcorn cart. And look who’s doing the roastie toastie work, it’s Goofy in a very 80’s looking outfit! I love him! Caramel Popcorn We also skipped on trying this one. We figured that caramel is a flavor we have at home, plus the rain was a bit of a deterrent for waiting in line. The caramel corn cart also featured the souvenir holiday bucket. Okay, time for another savory flavor. It’s Curry Popcorn from Tokyo Disneyland. My second favorite flavor! This one is sort of hard to explain. If you like curry even the slightest bit, you will enjoy curry popcorn. It is not as strong as “real” curry sauce, but has more than a hint of flavor. Whatever they use, it’s amazing. How about Big Al as the roastie toastie here??? Isn’t he great? Curry Popcorn There are a few Curry popcorn carts around the resort. We found this one in Westernland near the Country Bear Jamboree theater. It features the glorious “Santa” Little Green Men souvenir bucket. And believe you me, this is the bucket I bought to take home! I’ll share a great photo of it in use at the end of this post. At 2100 YEN ($17.53 US), this bucket was a little on the pricier side, but it’s also one of my favorite new Christmas decorations. Totally worth every penny. Let’s head back to Tokyo Disney Sea for Milk Tea Popcorn! Another flavor we didn’t try, but by the smell of it, it’s another sweet flavor. It smelled exactly like drinking Milk Tea. That makes sense, right? The whole surrounding area had a milk tea aroma. I actually wanted to try this one, but we just didn’t get around to it. Milk Tea Popcorn This cart was located in the Cape Cod area of the American Waterfront (aka all Duffy all the time). It housed the most expensive popcorn bucket, excuse me, basket, that we saw on our trip. Because… Duffy. The milk tea popcorn filled, Duffy adorned basket will set you back 2600 Yen ($21.71 US). I saw TONS of these baskets around the park and also lots of other past Duffy popcorn buckets. Duffy is most definitely a Tokyo Disney VIP. I really thought that this cart should have had a Duffy roastie toastie! We couldn’t resist the small of the Chocolate Popcorn, while walking by it smelled exactly like hot cocoa. And that’s what it tasted like, too! This was obviously one of the sweet flavors. It was pretty rich though. I couldn’t eat more than a few handfuls. Definitely worth a taste. This stand featured another Christmas clown roastie toastie. Chocolate Popcorn As far as the souvenir popcorn bucket goes, I love the cute Minnie hair bow that this cart offered. Randomly the bow bucket is 1640 Yen ($13.69), a whopping 40 Yen (33 cents) more than most of the other buckets… We found this cart in Fantasyland near the Castle Carrousel. Not a fan of milk chocolate? How about White Chocolate? I’m told this was a seasonal flavor for the holidays. There are often seasonal flavors that rotate in and out. We didn’t get a chance to try white chocolate. I couldn’t get anyone in my group on board with this one. White Chocolate Popcorn I do love the fun look of this cart. It’s located in Toon Town and offers the cutest souvenir popcorn bucket around. There he is again, Santa LGM! The final popcorn cart photo I have for you is Strawberry Popcorn. Another one we didn’t try. This one by choice because the smell was way too sweet. I’m not a fan of strawberry flavored anything. I LOVE fresh strawberries, but candy, cake, gum, basically anything strawberry “flavored” is not my jam. Although I do love strawberry jam… Strawberry Popcorn We found strawberry popcorn at Tokyo Disney Sea over in the Port Discovery area near Aquatopia. The best thing about this popcorn cart is the Mr. Potato Head popcorn bucket. Isn’t he fabulous? His parts wiggle around so you can change his expression a bit. This is one of the pricier souvenir popcorn buckets. Mr. Potato Head will set you back 2100 Yen ($17.53 US). A flavor that I didn’t get photos of is the Corn Potage (Corn Soup) Popcorn. Luckily though, I was able to try it. We must have looked like we were popcorn enthusiasts, because a nice lady in line for the chocolate popcorn when we were there had a whole tub of it and was like, “Here, Corn Soup! Try it!” I wish I took my photo with her, she was wearing like 3 different popcorn buckets. Popcorn game strong! The corn potage popcorn was really yummy, it tasted exactly like corn chowder. There have been several previous popcorn flavors in the park as well, I’ve heard of coconut (would LOVE to try this one), cranberry, cappuccino, black pepper, banana, apple cinnamon, and I’m sure several more I don’t know about. Currently the seasonal flavor is Orange Marmalade. It came out for the new year soon after we left. According to my friend Abi, it tastes like cough drops. So… No thanks! Check out her post with photos of the orange marmalade popcorn cart and see a pretty adorable roastie toastie straight out of the Country Bear Jamboree. Hint: It’s not Big Al. And for the grand popcorn finale, I give you this photo of my youngest. The perfect popcorn bucket model. With this crazy get up he fit right in with the awesomeness that is the Tokyo Disney Resort. He’s showing us how to rock that Santa Alien popcorn bucket & he looks amazing doing it! Have you explored the many popcorn options of the Tokyo Disney Resort? Do you enjoy flavored popcorn? Are you a sweet or savory type of person? I sure had a blast exploring this crazy world of popcorn. I hope that someday you, too, get to eat your way through the many popcorn carts of of Tokyo Disney! Stay tuned, I have more Tokyo goodness for you in the near future! Have you ever walked through Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland park and looked up to see the stunning chandelier clock? If not, you are missing a real treat. Installed in 1996, the chandelier clock has never actually worked. Despite the theories and rumors, the numerous times that have been set on the clock have had no significance. Over the years, I have photographed the clock many times during the day. This time, I wanted to see how the clock would photograph at night. I think the beauty of the clock is more evident at night than during the day. On a recent trip to Disneyland, we had many things to cross off of our list. But when it came time for breakfast in the Park one morning, only one stop would do — River Belle Terrace! River Belle Terrace in Disneyland’s Frontierland You’ll find this counter service spot in Frontierland along the Rivers of America. And that last bit of information is important. After all, you may come to River Belle Terrace because you’re hungry, but it has more to recommend it than the menu. Here we go! AtmosphereLocated in New Orleans Square, the aesthetic of River Belle Terrace is Antebellum all the way. The entrance is fashioned to look like a grand Southern mansion on a small scale. Entrance Step inside, and you see gracious touches that echo that feeling. Arched windows allow plenty of light into the seating area, so even if you choose to dine inside, you’ll still have the sense of being in an outdoor garden setting. Indoor Seating and Condiment Area Ornate ceiling medallions and flowering vines on the chandeliers fancy up the spot a bit. And keep this in mind: it may not look all that interesting or distinguished, but River Belle Terrace deserves a pause in your Disney Day. This restaurant has been serving since Disneyland opened in 1955! As the story goes, you could find Mr. Disney enjoying breakfast here often on serene Sunday mornings. Light Fixture and Ceiling Detail While the indoor seating is pleasant, it’s the terrace that is truly beloved by so many. Don’t you love the old-fashioned, tasseled umbrellas? They could have updated them and used something modern, but they haven’t. And I’m so glad. Outdoor Seating And this — this view. It’s why you come to River Belle Terrace. Eat your breakfast and watch for the Mark Twain Riverboat to paddle by. There’s nothing like this view of the Rivers of America, and if you can enjoy a classic Disneyland breakfast at the same time, it’s a win/win! View from River Belle Terrace Speaking of classic Disneyland breakfasts, it seems like the right time to move on to the food. Let’s check it out. EatsAlthough River Belle Terrace offers all-day dining, it’s breakfast that we usually enjoy here. In addition to some standard offerings, you’ll find comfort food favorites like Biscuits and Gravy. But there are some really unique options, too. We’ll get to a couple of my favorites in just a moment. Breakfast Menu — Click to Enlarge Menus, for breakfast as well as lunch and dinner, offer only a few selections. But the food is hearty and interesting. (Note to self: come back for that River Belle’s Roast Beef and the Messy Mississippi BBQ Sandwich at lunch time.) Lunch and Dinner Menus — Click to Enlarge When it’s time to order, your first stop will be at the Tray Station, where you’ll go ahead and get the utensils you need. Oddly, this station really put me off. Is it just me, or are those trays the perfect shade of “hospital mauve?” Ugh. I kind of felt like I was at a hospital cafeteria. Anyway, don’t let me bore you with my brain’s dalliances. Let’s get on with it, right? Trays and Plastic Tableware After that, proceed along the brass railing to the ordering counter, where you’ll order your selections, cafeteria-style. The ordering protocol at River Belle Terrace is fun for another reason: if you choose the Mickey Mouse Pancake (and really, why wouldn’t you?), you can watch it take shape right before your eyes! Dusting My Mickey Pancake with Powdered Sugar I had to snap a pic of this for you. Mickey Pancakes are so popular here that they’ve streamlined the garnishing process. Cast members can just grab the fruity eyes and nose, all ready to go on toothpicks! I thought that was pretty cool. Cherry Garnishes Once you’ve ordered, you can also select from some grab and go options. You’ll pick up your cup of Yogurt for your “Build Your Own” Yogurt Parfait here as well. Grab and Go Offerings When you have everything you’ve ordered and you’ve paid for your items, it’s time to check out the condiments. You’ll head to the Toppings Bar with your Yogurt to customize your Parfait if you’ve chosen one. (Or grab a bunch of free toppings to go with whatever you DID order!) “Build Your Own Yogurt Parfait” Toppings Beyond the bar, there are also lots of condiments to choose from. We found a selection of savory items, salt and pepper, and some coffee creamer here. Packaged Savory Condiments Further down, we found ketchup and an assortment of jams, jellies, and honey. Jams, Jellies, and Other Condiments Dickinson’s is the brand of choice, and their variety of syrup was available in vast quantities. Ah, ya gotta love a place where you can get all the syrup you need. Dickinson’s Pancake Syrup I know you’re anxious to see what we chose! Drum roll… You knew I was going for the Mickey Mouse Pancake, right? They’re the stuff that Disneyland breakfast legends are made of! I know, I know. It doesn’t looks all that “wow”. But here’s where you must understand the power of nostalgia. They’ve been cranking these little guys out — garnished just this way — for half of forever. Honestly, it’s kind of a rite of passage, and I bet if they ever so much as change that pineapple smile, there would be riots. Riots, I tell you. And it’s huge. That’s basically three pancakes right there. Mickey Pancake And with our homage to the Golden Age taken care of, I turned my attention to something a bit newer that I can never, ever resist — Cinnamon Roll French Toast! Now, this is not exactly like the Cinnamon Roll French Toast that — sigh — used to be on the menu at Carnation Cafe. (We should have a moment of silence here.) That version involved Cinnamon Rolls that had been cut into squares and deep fried before it was rolled in Cinnamon Sugar. But this version is still pretty spectacular. Round Cinnamon Rolls are split lengthwise, battered, and grilled. They’re topped with a drizzle of Cream Cheese Icing. But I asked for extra lots. And then I asked for even more extra on the side. Yes. I’m that person. Aren’t you glad you don’t have to go to the parks with me? Luckily, I had a super-sweet cast member who was willing to indulge me. As if that weren’t enough, the platter also comes with Scrambled Eggs and your choice of Sausage or Bacon. Cinnamon Roll French Toast Here’s what it looks like between the slices. Golden brown, delicious, and a ton of icing. It doesn’t get much better. Cinnamon Roll French Toast — Inside With that view and all of this delicious food, we’d already had an amazing Disney Day! And that was just the beginning… . OverallThey say we should start our day off right with a good breakfast. And I think they’re right. So if you have a chance to enjoy your breakfast in a spot that was dear to Walt Disney’s heart, it’s even better! If you’re visiting Disneyland, then it’s fair to guess that your day will be spent enjoying overstimulation of your senses to the max. Beginning your day in leisurely fashion, watching people and paddleboats pass by while enjoying a pretty delicious breakfast, can be the best way to prepare for all that is to come. I try not to play favorites when it comes to restaurants, but it’s hard to top the savory pulled pork sandwiches and barbecued ribs served up at Flame Tree Barbecue. While we’re refurbishing Flame Tree Barbecue to add additional seating areas, we’re happy to share that some of your favorite items from the restaurant will be temporarily available at various kiosks throughout the park. I’ve got a handy guide on where you can find your Flame Tree Barbecue favorites during refurbishment. Until Flame Tree Barbecue reopens, Mickey-shaped pretzels and jalapeno pretzels will be temporarily located at Isle of Java in Discovery Island, and look for hand-scooped ice cream and sundaes at Dino-Bite Snacks in Dinoland, U.S.A.
