Ever wanted to step into the world of Zootopia? Seeing all the colorful architecture and fun characters that reside in the city, we’ve totally daydreamed about going there. Well, good news — we can! Shanghai Disney Resort just opened a brand-new Zootopia land, and it is INCREDIBLE! ©Disney The park expansion opened on December 20th, 2023, and there are so many fun new things to see and do inside. Of course, there’s a new attraction called Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, which features a trackless ride system and some interesting Imagineering technology. There are some wild new treats, a “one-of-a-kind atmosphere show,” a merchandise location, and more. Disney really made sure to immerse its guests fully into the world of Zootopia! Speaking of — wait until you see the SURPRISE that Disney just debuted during the land’s grand opening ceremony. OK, first, let’s jump back in time. At the South By Southwest (SXSW) conference earlier this year, Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development (R&D) and Disney Research showed off some mind-boggling new technology. At the event, Imagineers unveiled a robotic character on SKATES that could move freely and even do tricks, like a somersault. Well, that untethered, dynamic robotic technology is more than just an idea these days — it’s really coming to life! ©Disney During Disney’s grand opening event for the new Zootopia land at Shanghai Disney Resort, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro was interrupted by a SPECIAL guest. It’s Duke Weaselton, the weaselly character from Zootopia with a name awfully similar to Duke of Weselton from Frozen. (The Zootopia movie is full of Easter eggs and Disney references!) Duke demonstrated the next iteration of Disney’s robotic technology by gliding on stage and swinging up to greet D’Amaro. ©Disney Duke rolled across the stage, pushing a purple kiosk (which was also a robotic figure!), swung on top of the kiosk, and introduced himself to Josh. Disney shared that Imagineers created several dynamic maneuvers for its new robot and even designed some super animated faces so that Duke could move and speak like a real character. Now THAT is impressive! Disney hasn’t shared any additional details on where we could see this technology going forward, but we can’t wait to learn more! Yep, this series is a re-telling of the novels by Rick Riordan, who has been working on the project since 2020. It’s safe to say that our middle and high school selves have been thriving as we look forward to the release date. Speaking of release date… that day is TODAY. Disney World has a TON of rides throughout its four theme parks. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster There are kids’ rides, family rides, and thrill rides. There’s a ride for nearly everybody to enjoy. But with so many rides comes a lot of upkeep. Disney has to make sure each of its rides is safe and working properly. And once in a while, they’ll get new things added to them or just some good updating. Well, we noticed that one ride will be down for quite a while starting this coming January. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in Hollywood Studios is a fun, fast-paced coaster that features music (and a pre-ride show) by Aerosmith. And we saw that, starting January 8th, 2024, the ride does not have any open times available. ©Disney The closure continues all the way until February 18th! The dates after February 18th are grayed out still, so we can’t see beyond that date, which makes it entirely possible that the closure will go longer than the February 18th date. ©Disney This lengthy closure is probably due to some refurbishments being made to the coaster. It could be a routine maintenance check or a minor update. We’ll just have to wait to find out! Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster The timing of the closure is a little unfortunate, though, as January 8th is the day right before park reservations and park hopping change. So that will be one less ride for us to enjoy when we hop over to Hollywood Studios– be sure to keep that in mind! Traveling during the holidays can be a bit overwhelming. Orlando Airport Between longer wait times at security and potential flight delays and cancelations, mentally preparing yourself for some hiccups is a good idea. If you’re traveling through the Orlando International Airport (MCO) this season, we have some unfortunate news about another problem you might encounter: rideshare struggles. During the holiday season, the Orlando International Airport can get extremely busy. If you’ll be passing through there soon and are hoping to use Uber or another rideshare service to get to your destination, it will require a lot of patience. Orlando International Airport can get very busy According to Click Orlando, a new policy at MCO has created logistical problems leading to some of the longest airport pickup delays in the state. During the busy Thanksgiving period, rideshare drivers started to park illegally on the main entrance roads leading up to the terminal, waiting for customers from the airport. In addition, some drivers were parking off-property in restaurant and hotel parking lots along South Semoran Boulevard. Orlando International Airport These business owners spoke to Orlando City Commissioner Tony Ortiz about their concerns, who said he requested a meeting with Uber to address the situation. According to Ortiz, Uber took action without a meeting — changing its geofencing to prevent drivers from picking up airport rides off property. Southwest at Orlando International Airport Now, Uber drivers can only enter the in-app virtual queue when they are located in one of the two allocated rideshare lots — the North TNC (Transportation Network Company) lot and the South TNC lot. Unfortunately, cell phone reception is poor to non-existent in the South TNC lot, so if drivers want to be able to book rides in the app, they all have to cram into the North TNC lot. Spirit Airlines at Orlando Airport Uber driver Scott Ellis, who shared a video of the parking lot with bumper-to-bumper traffic and cars honking left and right, said the new policy is creating “absolute pandemonium.” According to Ellis, some drivers have even resorted to parking elsewhere and running across the streets into the lot with their phones to enter the virtual pickup queue, creating safety concerns. Orlando International Airport This backed-up traffic situation makes it even harder for drivers to exit the lot, adding extra wait times to passenger pickup. While the airport has communicated that they are working to improve cell phone service in the South TNC lot, it’s a good idea to add in some extra travel time if you will be using rideshare this season. Orlando International Airport If you’re heading to Disney World, keep in mind that you can book a ride with Mears Connect Driven by Sunshine to avoid this headache! It’s not uncommon to long for the days of yore, especially at Disney World. Be Our Guest Restaurant We’ve come a long way since COVID-19 heavily impacted the world of the Disney Parks. Since then, the parks have adapted, returned (or are in the process of returning) several beloved features, and have made massive strides to create a new normal. With that said, NOT EVERYTHING has returned. In fact, we’re still missing a key discount program that disappeared over two years ago. Tables in Wonderland was a Disney World discount dining program open to Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members, and Florida Residents. We say “was” because as of September 1st, 2021, all membership cards expired and Disney has yet to reopen the program. So what exactly is/was Tables in Wonderland and why is it missed? Let’s delve deeper into it! Tables in Wonderland Membership Card The Tables in Wonderland membership provided a 20% discount on food and beverages (including alcohol) at over 100 restaurants and lounges in Walt Disney World. This included both the parks and hotels. For Florida residents, the cost of membership was $175 per year, while DVC members and Annual/Seasonal Passholders paid $150 per year. You could add on second memberships for spouses and partners, but this was hardly necessary unless you weren’t planning on eating together. The cost of this service was fairly reasonable, as you could easily make that money back in savings. Narcoosee’s In addition to the 20% discount, membership also included complimentary resort/hotel, parking reimbursement at the theme parks after dining there, and invitations to special member-only events. The savings were obvious and with parking prices increasing at Disney World, this membership perk would’ve been nice to have. Paddlefish So what happened? We’re not quite sure. The program may or may not have been canceled due to COVID-19 changes, but since it was canceled in the thick of the pandemic, it’s hard to say. It also could’ve been removed in an effort to help maximize profits for Disney. Of course, this is all speculation and we still don’t know if Tables in Wonderland is gone temporarily or permanently. If and when Disney ever does make an announcement about the discount program, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop. Remember when we warned you that Disney World could be extra busy on one special day in December? No, it’s not a holiday (OK, it may be “National Cathode-Ray Tube Day,” according to the internet, but that’s probably unrelated to what we’re about to talk about). December 20th is a BUSY day in Disney World, and we have the proof. Magic Kingdom There’s a reason we suggest planning your Disney World trip as far ahead of time as possible — the parks may be a little extra crowded as we approach Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Let’s talk about it! First, we’ll give you a little background. Disney offers four types of Annual Passes: the Disney Incredi-Pass, the Disney Sorcerer Pass (available to DVC Members and Florida residents only), the Disney Pirate Pass (Florida residents only), and the Disney Pixie Dust Pass (Florida residents only). Every pass except for the Incredi-Pass is subject to blockout dates throughout the year, typically during peak season, and late December is one of those busy times of the year when blockout dates kick in. Annual Passholder Card In fact, December 19th was the last day that Sorcerer Pass, Pirate Pass, and Pixie Dust Pass holders could visit the parks before a blockout period of two weeks. We predicted that the crowds would increase around this time as Passholders tried to cram in a few more visits before the blockout. Between the Passholders visiting the parks before the blockout and the general holiday season crowds, Christmas week is a HECTIC time of year. Annual Passholder Card On December 20th, the crowds are pretty heavy in Disney World. Magic Kingdom’s paid Genie+ service sold out as of 9:15AM. The “Multiple Parks” option is also unavailable at this time. ©Disney On December 19th, Genie+ was $27 for Magic Kingdom and Multiple Parks, while EPCOT was $19, Disney’s Hollywood Studios was $24, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom was $17. Today, the prices are a little higher. As we approach Christmas, we expect Genie+ to keep getting more expensive. Genie+ Currently, Genie+ is still available at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but we’ll keep our eyes out for updates. You probably aren’t thinking about trying another Disney ice cream snack in the middle of winter, but hear us out! EPCOT EPCOT menus have seen lots of changes lately with snack stands disappearing and the whole slew of options from EPCOT’s Festival of the Holidays. But this NEW snack in the World Showcase Mexico pavilion is one we wouldn’t mind seeing as a permanent addition! On a recent trip out to EPCOT, we decided to browse the various snack options around the World Showcase and noticed an interesting option found in Mexico. La Cantina de San Angel, a quick service restaurant that borders the World Showcase lagoon, is typically a place we like to stop in for a quick bite of tacos or chips and guac, but this time we were after something sweeter. La Cantina de San Angel We noticed the Coffee Tequila Sundae, which piqued our interest. We’ve seen churro sundaes in the past but not one recently that included an alcoholic option, so we opted to try it out. This looks good! The Coffee Tequilla Sundae is made of vanilla soft-serve ice cream with Mr. Black Coffee liqueur drizzled over the ice cream and topped with churro bites for $9.99. Usually, Mr. Black is made with vodka, but for this snack, they’ve opted to use a special edition with mezcal, which is not always tequila…but we won’t get into that. Coffee Tequilla Sundae This snack looked just like the picture card at the registers and smelled even better! The soft-serve ice cream was thick and creamy (pretty standard for Disney World ice cream), and when mixed with Mr. Coffee mezcal it tasted like a caramel frappuccino. The taste was distinctly coffee but with a very heavy ratio of cream and sugar and not just a straight coffee taste. So creamy! The churro bites were made of cinnamon sugar churros and were crisp on the outside but had a warm soft center when you bit into them. Our only complaint with these is they were a bit too long — it would’ve been great to have them be bite-sized instead. Churro bites Overall it was a great snack and we were pretty happy with the portion size for the price. The coffee mezcal added the advertised coffee flavor, but because that was so prominent, we didn’t really get a good smokey taste like you normally would in a mezcal until the aftertaste set in. At the end of the day, people don’t come to Disney World for the pretty architecture or the novelty Minnie ears. They come to Disney World for the MAGIC. But we’re going to let you in on a little secret. Magic doesn’t come from a selfie in front of Cinderella Castle or a fancy new MagicBand. It comes from the Cast Members all around you. OK, that was cheesy. But it’s true. We’re leaning into it, OK? Cast Members Seriously. You can’t put a price on the magic of getting Pixie Dusted at Sir Mickey’s in Magic Kingdom. OK, you can. It’s free. But still, you get our point. Still, despite all that Disney World Cast Members do for us, there are some common misconceptions (when we’re feeling especially dramatic, we call them “vicious lies and Cast Member propaganda) about the true powers of a Cast Member. Let’s talk about it. We compiled a list of five common LIES people believe about Disney World Cast Members. Sure, there are instances when Cast Members have to power to really change your trip, but at the end of the day, we need to set the record straight about a few things. Let’s all stop believing these things about Cast Members. Time for a little fact-checking! Lie #1: Cast Members have the unlimited power to create “Magical Moments” whenever they want. Talk to any former or current Cast Member, and you’ll hear the same thing: people are NOT shy about asking for their own “Magical Moments.” Kind of defeats the purpose of a Magic Moment, no? Well, either way, a LOT of people believe that Cast Members can (and should) toss out freebies, special favors, and VIP treatments as often as they want. Clap Box Here’s the problem with that logic. Number one: part of what makes a Magic Moment so special is its rarity. If everyone around you is getting a Magic Moment, suddenly, it’s not so magic anymore. It’s just normal. That’s not to say that Disney Cast Members aren’t making TONS of magic on a daily basis, though. It’s all about getting lucky! Disney World Cast Members Oh, and something else to keep in mind? Often, Magic Moments need approval from a leader — especially if it involves food, merchandise, or anything of monetary value. Disney is still a business, after all, and Disney can’t give Cast Members complete autonomy when it comes to giving things away. So even if a Cast Member WANTS to make a little magic, they simply might not be allowed. Gah! Red tape! It even exists in the Disney bubble. Lie #2: That it doesn’t matter when you show up for your Lightning Lane. Those Disney World Cast Members standing at the Lightning Lane entrance may seem like literal gatekeepers, but again, they’re just doing their jobs. As cool as it would be to let that nice family through the Peter Pan’s Flight Lightning Lane even though they don’t have a reservation, what message does that send to that other nice family standing three feet away? Awkward! Peter Pan’s Flight It might look like Cast Members have the total and ultimate power to let you through the express lane — even if you don’t have a Lightning Lane reservation, but they don’t. They could get in trouble for breaking the rules, just like you! Slinky Dog Dash The same thing goes for those strict Lightning Lane return times; those return windows exist for a reason, and if everyone started ignoring their return times, the whole system could get thrown off. It’s a delicate balance, something those Cast Members don’t get paid enough to mess with. Lie #3: That Cast Members are robots. Believe it or not, even the happiest-looking Cast Members may not always be Disney-level positive. At the end of the day, they’re going to work, doing a job, and experiencing good days and bad days just like the rest of us. Be nice to them! Cast Members creating magic Speaking of being nice, this seems like a good time to point out that Cast Members have feelings, too. Screaming in someone’s face, even in Disney World, will upset the person on the other end of that argument. Just because they may be wearing costumes or working in a literal Fantasyland doesn’t mean they can take anything thrown at them. Lie #4: That Cast Members only make magic for kids. In Disney World, it doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, or where you came from. Cast Members make magic for EVERYONE. Hi, Cast Member! And when we say “magic,” we’re talking about anything from giving someone a special sticker to riding at the front of the monorail. There’s no age limit! Don’t be embarrassed if you’re visiting the parks as a grown adult. Trust us, you are FAR from the only adult having a good time in the parks and resorts. In fact, it’s weird to NOT have fun at Disney World. The more you embrace it, the more fun you will have. Lie #5: Cast Members are trained that the guest is always right. You may have heard the old saying in retail that “The customer is always right.” Well, that’s not true. Yes, Cast Members typically go out of their way to accommodate guests, but that doesn’t mean guests have the final say. (And thank goodness! Imagine a theme park run by the customers. Nightmare!) Donald Duck in Mexico Ultimately, it all comes down to safety. Sure, it would be easier for a Cast Member to pretend they don’t see someone stepping over the tape line during a parade. Yeah, it might be better to avoid confrontation and let one more family in line to meet Donald. But Cast Members are actually trained to put safety above EVERYTHING else. So, no amount of pleading (or demanding) will change that. Maleficent dragon on Main Street, U.S.A. Next time you interact with a Cast Member, show them a little extra love — they deserve it! This might be the Disney Food Blog, but believe it or not — we also have an appetite while we’re not at Disney World. Ba Da Ba Ba Bah… Yep, shocker. While we wish we could only eat Disney World food for the rest of our lives (actually, that doesn’t sound very nutritious but you get the sentiment), we do love to grub outside of the parks as well. Of course, when we’re outside of the parks, the McDonald’s drive-thru calls our name. Just for the nostalgia, we sometimes find ourselves grabbing Happy Meals. Okay, okay. We do still love getting the toys. That’s a big part of it. Speaking of which… There will be NEW toys at McDonald’s soon, and they’re kind of a BIG deal. According to PR Newswire, Squishmallows will officially be at McDonald’s starting December 26th! Yep, when you order a Happy Meal, you’ll receive a Squishmallow in your little red and yellow box. ©McDonald’s So… why is this such a big deal? If you’re trying to plan your next Disney World vacation today, you might encounter some issues. Magic Kingdom We reported earlier today that the Disney World website was facing some issues and hotel bookings were unavailable. But now, the problem has spread to other areas of the website as well — and we’re here to warn you. When we tried to visit the ticket page on the Disney World website, we were given an error message. We currently can’t view ticket prices or purchase tickets online. ©Disney The notice says that Disney is currently making updates and that purchases will be available “later.” These kinds of closures usually come before some change in the system — it could be anything from price increases to just general updates for the page itself. Chewbacca Disney World Card At this time, we’re still able to access ticket purchasing in the My Disney Experience app. If you need to make a purchase right away, we suggest going there. Universal Studios has multiple theme parks around the United States and around the world. Universal Orlando You can step into the movies in the U.S. at Universal Orlando, Islands of Adventure, or Universal Studios Hollywood. Or head to parks in Singapore, Japan, or Beijing. If you’re a fan of movies like Harry Potter, Fast and the Furious, or Jurassic Park, then you may enjoy a trip to one of these parks. They certainly bring the action. Now, it seems, that Universal may be looking to expand to another country. According to an exclusive reveal by the Bedford Independent, in the U.K., Universal Studios is reportedly considering adding its very first U.K. park. Universal Orlando There had been recent suspicion that this announcement was coming. There had been published records indicating land purchased by Universal in Bedford Borough but now, Universal has confirmed that they have indeed purchased the land and are considering adding a new park in Bedford Borough. Minion Land in Universal Orlando A spokesperson from Universal Destinations & Experiences stated, “We recently acquired land in Bedford [Borough] and are at the early stages of exploring its feasibility for a potential park and resort at this site.
