February 7th marked a big day of NEWS from The Walt Disney Company. Walt Disney World At the first earnings call of 2024, we learned a LOT about the Company’s financial gains and losses. While things in the parks are still a bit complicated, it seems that things within the streaming and film sector are on the up and up. Disney announced that ESPN would be partnering with Fox and Warner Bros., Zootopia 2, Toy Story 5, and Frozen 3 are each in the works and set to start rolling out in 2025 and beyond, and we’re even getting Moana 2 later this year! Yes, you’ll be able to catch Moana 2 in theaters on November 27th, 2024! Disney shared stunning clips and a teaser trailer of the movie, which you can watch here: Variety shared some extra details regarding the film’s production, and this is where some fans began to feel a little less excited. It seems that Lin-Manuel Miranda won’t be working on the film as he did with the first Moana movie. Lin-Manuel Miranda Miranda is the brain behind iconic songs from the first movie like “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome,” so it’s hard to imagine a continuation of Moana’s story without him. ©Disney Variety said, “Dave Derrick Jr. is directing the sequel, with music from the duo of Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, as well as Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, who worked on the first film.” We’re constantly monitoring Disney news, so we’ll be on the lookout for more news pertaining to Moana 2. Universal Orlando blew a lot of minds when it recently released new details about its upcoming third park, Epic Universe. ©Universal The new park will have a total of five new themed lands with five new restaurants and a TON of new rides. One of the new lands is an original concept called Celestial Park, which will act as the central hub that leads to the other four lands. This area will also feature two new rides, including a roller coaster called Starfall Racers. Well, Universal also teased that there would be a fun easter egg on that coaster! Starfall Racers is a dual-launch roller coaster with two vehicles that will launch at the same time and race each other. It will reach speeds of up to 62 miles per hour and will have a track that will reach up to 133 feet high. The ride vehicles are designed to look like comets and will “race along an inverted crisscross, known as the ‘Celestial Spin’ in a dazzling display of blazing colors and ethereal music.” Sounds thrilling, right? ©Universal Universal also teased a special “gift” on the back of each coaster vehicle that’s “Truly outatime!” That sounds a lot like a reference to the license plate on the DeLorean in Back to the Future (and there even used to be a Back to the Future ride at Universal Studios Orlando). ©Universal Pictures Universal’s announcement just said, “And although I can’t give this easter egg away just yet, just know that there’s a gift for true Universal fans on the back of each coaster vehicle. Truly outatime!” It sounds like the ride vehicles might have Back to the Future-themed license plates, but we’ll have to wait and see for sure! Starfall Racers is a HUGE roller coaster with a 1.8-mile track designed to feel like a wooden coaster, but with a smoother ride. You’ll want to ride it at night when it’s covered with “hundreds of points of light,” which will make it really feel like you’re riding a comet through space. ©Universal We’re looking forward to learning more about Epic Universe, as well as looking toward its opening in 2025 — yep, we’ve still got a WHOLE year to wait. But so far, everything about Epic Universe is…well…EPIC! Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort is a stunning, classic (expensive) hotel. It’s got a spa, a beautiful pool, views of Magic Kingdom, and some AMAZING dining options. But there’s one restaurant we’ve been missing for a while. In fact, it’s been closed since 2020! Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort We’ve had our eyes on the Disney website for YEARS, awaiting an update on one Grand Floridian restaurant. And finally — finally! — this dining spot has a reopening date. Mark your calendars, people! This is BIG! Disney just announced that 1900 Park Fare will reopen with NEW dining offerings starting April 10th, 2024. Say WHAT?! Yep, as of this April, we can finally return to this classic restaurant for a meal just outside the gates of Magic Kingdom. ©Disney Disney hasn’t shared a peek at the new menu yet; in fact, the old menu was removed from the website altogether. But we did get an interesting hint. On the Disney website, we caught a line of text reading, “Check back on March 5th, 2024 for more information.” Oooh — what could that mean?! 1900 Park Fare In the past, this restaurant offered buffet dining with Disney characters. You could meet characters during both breakfast and dinner! During the breakfast meal, known as the Supercalifragilistic Breakfast, you could meet characters like Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, and even The Mad Hatter. 1900 Park Fare Decor Then, the meal switched after breakfast to Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner, with appearances from Cinderella, Prince Charming, Lady Tremaine, and Cinderella’s stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella! Cinderella and Prince Charming host dinner! One of the signature menu items here was the Floridian Strawberry Soup. It was served during both breakfast and dinner and was a favorite among many Disney fans. It’s not quite a smoothie, but it’s not a warm, savory soup either. Instead, it’s a cold, sweet soup with a smooth texture and a few blended strawberries. Luckily, Disney announced that this menu item will RETURN! Strawberry Soup in Disney World Disney hasn’t shared any other updates on how 1900 Park Fare will look when it reopens, so stay tuned for updates! Listen up! It seems that Disney is meaning business when it comes to cracking down on password sharing for Disney+ accounts in 2024. ©Disney It hasn’t been too long since the last time Disney mentioned cracking down on password sharing between Disney+ households. That conversation has even inspired other streaming services to follow suit, too! Now, Disney has shared yet another update on its plans to reduce password sharing among subscribers. Disney had already promised to crack down on password sharing between households for its popular streaming service Disney+, but now we know more about how they plan to enforce it. During Disney’s 2024 Q1 earnings call, The Walt Disney Company revealed the latest in its plans to make good on its promise of sticker enforcement. ©Disney Based on what was shared during the call, Disney is going to be actively cracking down on account holders who are sharing their account passwords with folks who do not reside in the same household. While the streaming platform was originally meant to share between devices like your T.V., iPad, computer, and even mobile phones, it seems that account holders were taking that even further outside of just that immediate circle. ©Disney Disney has said that they are working on plans for account holders who want to allow access to individuals outside of their household. Those who opt-in for this service add-on will be able to add them to their accounts for an additional fee later this year. ©Disney While there’s definitely more to learn about how many people will be allowed per account additionally (and how much it will cost to add to your existing service), Disney isn’t sharing that information with us just yet. For now, we’ll just be waiting to hear from Disney what the future holds for add-on services to existing plans and we’ll be sure to update you once we know more about them! In a talk with CNBC prior to the earnings call, Disney shared that Moana 2 would be in theaters on November 27th, 2024. When you think of the Disney parks what comes to mind? Maybe it’s an image of Cinderella Castle, hours-long lines for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, or money flying out of your bank account as you pay for that hotel stay. But how are the Disney parks ACTUALLY doing financially? Disney’s Hollywood Studios We’ve seen some interesting financial reports on the parks in recent years. Though the parks have often been the highlight of Disney’s earnings call (bringing in some BIG bucks in prior years), we have seen recent reports showing disappointing results in Disney’s Florida parks (which it has partially blamed on the Star Wars Hotel). So what’s the latest update? We’ve got it right here for you. On February 7th, Disney released its earnings report and held its earnings call on the first quarter of fiscal year 2024. That gave us a better idea of how the Company has been doing financially over the last few months, and things are interesting when it comes to the Disney parks (and Disney Experiences in general). Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge In an interview with CNBC before the earnings call, Iger stated, “The combination of [global parks] with the domestic parks, whose business is, I think, more than twice what it was before the pandemic, is just an extraordinary business for us.” A lot of the success came from the global parks, which saw higher revenue due to guests spending more in the parks and on average higher ticket prices. They also saw a growth in attendance. The opening of World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland and Zootopia at Shanghai Disney Resort helped with the success. Arendelle Castle at Hong Kong Disneyland As we noted above, recent reports have shown lower financial results at the Florida theme parks, and that is echoed in the 2024 Q1 Earnings Report, which shows that revenue has dropped at the domestic parks and hotels. Disney attributes these to lower attendance at Disney World and higher costs because of inflation. Though guests spent more on tickets, this was offset by lower average rates of hotel rooms. Magic Kingdom In Disneyland, the results were similar to previous quarters. There was attendance growth, higher ticket prices, and higher costs within the parks due to inflation, all of which impacted the growth. However, this revenue growth was offset by the increase in costs at the resort. Iger said that every Disney park was profitable this quarter, and Disney has big plans for their theme parks: “We have so many untapped stories just waiting to be brought to life in our parks across the globe.” Sleeping Beauty Castle In terms of Disney Cruise Line, there was much higher success and it offset the lower results in the two domestic parks. There was an increase in ticket prices and more days added to cruise itineraries. While there were higher costs, it wasn’t as much of an impact here as it was for the parks. ©Disney Disney has some interesting things happening in its theme parks. Its international parks have recently become home to some BIG new things, like the World of Frozen in Hong Kong Disneyland. And some more large expansions will open soon, like Fantasy Springs in Tokyo Disney Resort. Northern Delights On the domestic side, however, plans have been far less concrete. Disney is working on its Disneyland Forward project for the West Coast and has announced $1.9 billion expansion plans without concrete details about what exactly would be coming to the parks. Disney has also discussed potential expansion/change plans for Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but these have all simply been “Blue Sky” concepts — a.k.a. they are ideas of what could happen, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Concept art for DinoLand expansion ©Disney As a whole, Disney has said that they plan to invest about $60 billion in their experiences over the next 10 years, but this plan to “turbocharge” growth within Disney’s theme parks won’t really take place until the second half of that 10-year plan. During the recent Earnings Call, Disney said that 70% of that $60 billion investment is earmarked for “incremental capacity-expanding investment,” and every Disney theme park is going to get something new. With Universal poised to open its brand new Epic Universe theme park in 2025, however, some expect Disney to announce a 5th park soon in an attempt to compete. Will it all be too little too late? Only time will tell. Possible Land Expansion in Magic Kingdom ©Disney We’re keeping a close eye on all of the news from Disney’s earnings call so stay tuned for more! Disney is working on a NEW streaming service and some big details have been released. ©ESPN Disney has quarterly earnings calls each year, and in them, they discuss how the company has been performing and what their goals are for the year/the upcoming quarter. They also often give updates on what’s next. In the company’s 2023 Q4 earnings call, they shared that they had massive plans for ESPN, and now we’re starting to see that those plans are taking shape! In the last 2023 earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger introduced “four key building opportunities” for The Walt Disney Company “that will be central to [its] success,” and one of those points was “building ESPN into the preeminent digital sports platform.” Disney is also looking at ways of “allowing [them] to reach fans in compelling new ways and fully integrating key features into [their] primary ESPN offering.” ESPN feature at CES 2024 Just before the Q1 earnings call for fiscal year 2024, Disney announced that it would be starting a NEW streaming service for sports assets that’ll combine things from ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. This service will be available to ESPN+, Hulu, and Max subscribers, and each company will own one-third of the product. During the earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke more about plans for ESPN. The full suite of ESPN’s channels will become a standalone and highly interactive streaming destination in Fall 2025. This will include ESPN Bet, ESPN’s sportsbook betting service that debuted in 2023. ©ESPN This new streaming destination will also include shopping features, as well as robust personalization features. ©ESPN Disney is excited to offer a more unified streaming experience when this standalone ESPN offering launches. It will also be made available on Disney+ for bundle subscribers, similar to what the company has already done with Hulu. We’ll continue to look for updates about this streaming service, so stay tuned for more news. Could an ESPN and Netflix merger solve Iger’s streaming worries? The Disney Parks you know and love could be changing in a BIG way. Magic Kingdom Disney has teased potential expansion plans for NEW themed areas “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” in Magic Kingdom and discussed a DinoLand U.S.A. re-theme in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. They’ve also talked about a $1.9 BILLION expansion at Disneyland. But those plans shared with fans have essentially just been “Blue Sky” ideas — a.k.a. nothing that is officially confirmed. But, we’ve seen hints at the expansion projects in the past, and now it seems Disney is dropping some more clues about what’s to come! On February 7th, Disney held its earnings call (and released its earnings report) for the first quarter of the 2024 fiscal year. We got all kinds of info about different things happening within the Disney Company, but perhaps most importantly for Disney World fans, we got an update about the potential expansion at Disney’s parks. @Disney In case you’re not familiar with these ideas generally, Disney previously shared some potential ideas they’re looking at to expand Magic Kingdom. This could include lands “Beyond Thunder Mountain” that are themed to Coco, Encanto, or maybe even the Disney villains. Concept art of potential Magic Kingdom expansion In terms of Animal Kingdom, Disney is looking at potentially re-theming the DinoLand area to feature new experiences inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones (previously, areas themed to Zootopia and Moana had been teased for this space as well). DinoLand USA Expansion On the West Coast, DisneylandForward is the name for the proposed changes and new additions. At a recent Anaheim City Council meeting, we learned that Disney is committed to spending $1.9 billion over the next decade under this proposal. Disney included projects themed to Coco, Black Panther, Tangled, Frozen, Zootopia, Peter Pan, Tron, and Toy Story in its proposal. ©Disney So now, let’s get to the updates! During the earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger was asked about the potential theme park expansions, and he said, “We’re already hard at work at determining where we’re going to place our investments and what they’re going to be.” He seems to be referring to the $60 billion investment plan Disney announced towards the end of 2023. Essentially, Disney is looking to invest $60 billion the the Parks, Experiences, and Products segment of the company over the next 10 years. ©Disney Disney also confirmed that 70% of that investment in the parks is “earmarked for incremental capacity-expanding investment,” which to us sounds like park expansions! Iger noted that every park location will have new stuff, and those new additions will start to roll out in 2025. From there, Disney plans to have “a cadence of new stuff every year.” Cinderella Castle Now, keep in mind that these ideas all seem to be in the “Blue Sky” phase at the moment, meaning they are being worked on but not officially confirmed to be coming to the parks. The ideas, the potential rides, the potential lands, etc. could all change once Disney makes a more concrete decision regarding what expansions/re-themes they’d like to do. With Universal set to open a brand NEW theme park in 2025 (Epic Universe), Disney might be feeling the pressure to deliver a new park of its own or at least some incredible new lands, so we may get more news about all of these ideas soon. “Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail.” We haven’t seen the last of Percy Jackson and his pals! ©Disney When it first debuted on Disney+, Percy Jackson and the Olympians struck the streaming service like lightning. The popular book-turned-show seemed to garner positive critical acclaim and quickly. With so much success, fans wondered when a second season would be announced (and if there would even be one). Now it appears we have our answer! When we last left off in the series, Percy Jackson and his quest-seeking pals were on their way back from confronting Zeus about a war coming between Hades and the Gods. A war that we weren’t certain we would get to see take place. We also had just unraveled the mystery of who truly stole Zeus’s lightning bolt. These were just a small selection of questions that could only be answered by a second season of the series. By the time the show’s first season wrapped, it left quite a few of the viewers (including us) a bit empty. We were left in the dark about whether or not a second season would happen — but we were hopeful! ©Disney Now, we’re happy to report that Disney has officially confirmed that Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be getting a second season! ©Disney Our beloved heroes have already made quite the journey across their quest in season one of the series. It will be interesting to follow along this version of the storyline and see how true to the books the series intends to stay. Disney just released a TON of new information and big announcements, and one of those announcements is good news for shareholders! ©Disney | Walt Disney Company Headquarters The Walt Disney Company held its 2024 Q1 Earnings Call and released its Earnings Report on February 7th, 2024. We learned some big news, like when the Moana sequel will come out and how Bob Iger’s #1 priority is actually doing. In addition, Disney provided an important update on its plans for the next dividend payouts. On February 7th, Disney declared a cash dividend of $0.45 per share. This represents an increase of 50% compared to the last dividend paid in January! This dividend will be paid on July 25th, 2024, to “shareholders of record at the close of business on July 8th, 2024.” Walt Disney Company Headquarters ©LA Times A dividend is when a company pays back its shareholders a certain percentage of the cost of their shares, generally to inspire confidence in the company, show that things are going well, share profits with loyal shareholders, and entice new investors to pay in. Disney’s shareholders have received lots of big news lately, as the company is currently dealing with not one but TWO proxy battles. Nelson Peltz’s Trian Group is vying for spots on the Board of Directors, as is investment firm Blackwells Capital. ©New York Times Nelson Peltz of Trian Partners Both groups have proposed changes at Disney. For example, Blackwells Capital wants Disney to separate its owned real estate into independent publicly listed real estate investment trusts, or “a series of investment vehicles in which the shares, cash and/or interests could be distributed to shareholders.” They believe that the company “may simply be too complex for any one successor to Mr. Iger to manage holistically.” Peltz has proposed that Disney should bundle ESPN+ with Netflix, although this recommendation may be largely obsolete as Disney just announced a new sports streaming platform with Warner Bros. and Fox. ESPN Wide World of Sports Shareholders can vote during the shareholder meeting on April 3rd. Disney has released their own recommendations for the Board of Directors, and they’ve even created a cartoon to direct shareholders to vote for their recommendations. Disney is no stranger to lawsuits, but this latest one is a doozy. via The Hollywood Reporter, Jesse Grant/Getty Images Elon Musk is bankrolling a suit brought against Disney by Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. She is suing Disney for discrimination and wrongful termination, claiming she was fired for sharing her political beliefs on social media. But, Carano has a history of making controversial statements on the internet. Carano, an MMA fighter turned actress, filed a complaint in California federal court against Disney and Lucasfilm. The lawsuit alleges that she was fired for sharing her Republican opinions on social media. ©Disney | Walt Disney Company Headquarters A victory in this case would require Lucasfilm to recast her and pay at least $75,000 and punitive damages. Carano was fired in 2021 after she shared a post that implied that “being a Republican is like being Jewish during the Holocaust.” She had often posted on social media, primarily X, about sensitive topics about her right-wing opinions. In the wake of the new suit, we’re taking a look at some of Carano’s most controversial statements. ©Disney Back in 2020, Carano failed to show support for Black Lives Matter on X (then Twitter). She said, “In my experience, screaming at someone that they are a racist when they are indeed NOT a racist & any post and/or research you do will show you those exact facts, then I’m sorry, these people are not ‘educators’. They are cowards and bullies.” (Deadline) Walt Disney Company Headquarters ©LA Times Later, she was also accused of making transphobic social media posts. When Carano was encouraged to add preferred pronouns to her Twitter bio, she resisted and then add added “boop/bop/beep” instead. She then posted, “They’re mad cuz I won’t put pronouns in my bio to show my support for trans lives. After months of harassing me in every way. I decided to put 3 VERY controversial words in my bio.. beep/bop/boop” and “I’m not against trans lives at all. They need to find less abusive representation.” After Carano received criticism for her actions, she admitted her Mandalorian costar Pedro Pascal “helped [her] understand why people were putting [pronouns] in their bios. I didn’t know before but I do now. I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to. I stand against bullying, especially the most vulnerable & freedom to choose.” ©Lucasfilm In the wake of the 2020 presidential election, Carano posted tweets in support of Donald Trump, questioning the election results, saying, “We need to clean up the election process so we are not left feeling the way we do today. Put laws in place that protect us against voter fraud.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, she shared numerous anti-mask memes on Twitter, condemning the recommended safety precautions in place at the time (November 2020.) Cinderella Castle Perhaps Carano’s most controversial post, though, came in February 2021 when she made a particularly incendiary post on Instagram. It read, “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors… even by children… Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?” Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge This led to the hashtag #FireGinaCarano to trend with Lucasfilm releasing a statement indicating she was not currently employed by the company and that they had “no plans for her to be in the future.” “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable,” the statement said. Now, Carano is suing Disney with the help of Elon Musk, claiming that she was fired for sharing her Republican beliefs on social media. Disney has yet to make a statement at this time, but we’ll let you know if that changes. We’ll continue to bring you the latest updates about this new lawsuit and more news from The Walt Disney Company, so stay tuned to DFB. “Mandatory Racism and Sexism,” Elon Musk Posts About Disney Inclusion Standards Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! This may be Disney’s most ambitious project yet! ©Disney Disney’s earnings call for Q1 of 2024 came with some BIG announcements. Take a seat folks, Disney just dropped some HUGE news and we’ve got it all for you right here! ©Disney On February 7th, 2024, Disney held its earnings call (and released its earnings report) for the first quarter of fiscal year 2024. That gave us some important updates on Disney’s financial situation in its theme parks, its streaming services, and more. So just how is Disney doing right now? Are things looking up at the Mouse House or is there bad news in store for 2024? Let’s dive in and break it all down! Disney+ Subscribers Streaming is a HUGE priority for the Walt Disney Company (and one CEO Bob Iger has previously called his number one priority). At the end of the 2023 fiscal year, Disney+ Core had a total of 112.6 million subscribers, while Disney+ Hotstar had 37.6 million. As of the latest update (for the first quarter of fiscal year 2024), the numbers are as follows: Disney+ subscribers decreased by 1.3 million which was in line with the company’s expectations. However, Disney is projecting a rebound of 5.5 to 6 million subscribers for the second quarter. ©Disney Direct-to-Consumer Revenue and Loss What about revenue and loss for Disney’s direct-to-consumer business as a whole (Disney+, Disney+ Hotstar, and Hulu)? Here’s how things look there: Overall, in streaming, the company had a loss of $138 million this quarter. However, Iger commented that across the board, the company saw success and there has been a dramatic improvement in streaming. This marks a change from the end of the prior quarter, where the revenue was just over $5 billion and the operating loss was a loss of around $420 million. It’s finally here! Disney and Hulu have been working on a one-app experience (the beta test of which was already released), and cracking down on password sharing. Plus, we’ve seen Disney+ included with Apple Vision Pro, new seasons of popular shows announced for Disney+, and the cancelation of certain shows. It seems that a lot of things truly are changing in the streaming space for Disney. Whether all of it will ultimately lead to Disney’s goal of making Disney+ profitable by the end of fiscal year 2024 remains to be seen, but it’s something we’ll be watching carefully. Magic Kingdom We’re working on analyzing and sharing ALL of the news from Disney’s earnings call and report with you, so stay tuned for that. Bob Iger has announced that his big priorities for 2024 are achieving significant profit streaming, building up ESPN into something even bigger, improving the output of their movie studios, and turbocharging growth in the Experiences business. We’ll be watching for updates on these things throughout the year to see just how Disney handles them. If you’re planning to drive around Disney World, there are a few important things to note. If you stay at a Disney World hotel, you’ll get free overnight parking as well as free parking at the parks. However, if you stay elsewhere, you’ll have to pay for parking at the theme parks. Although standard self-parking is free at the hotels during the day so long as you have a valid dining reservation.
