Then be on the lookout for specialty treats and menus at some of your favorite Disneyland dining locations celebrating St. Valentine’s Day on February 14th! Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle Of course, with Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year, a few spots will be celebrating all weekend long… Disneyland ParkKeep an eye out for Valentine’s Day Cotton Candy at street carts around the park on Valentine’s Day. (Be sure to look for this sweet treat around Disney California Adventure, too!) ©Disney Carnation Cafe will feature “Surf and Turf” with sirloin steak and a shrimp skewer with vegetables on the 14th. The beautiful Blue Bayou Restaurant will offer a “Sweetheart Duet” on February 14th: bacon-wrapped filet mignon and halibut with accompaniments. Guests at the Blue Bayou Restaurant will also have the chance to enjoy a “Sweetheart Toast” for $11.95 per person. The toast includes sparkling cider served in a champagne flute engraved with the Blue Bayou logo, which is yours to keep. And Cafe Orleans will offer Sautéed Shrimp and Andouille Sausage with zucchini and cherry tomatoes and linguine pasta in a cream shrimp fume. Disney California AdventureOn February 13th and 14th, Carthay Circle will feature the Sweetheart Dinner for Two. For $140 (plus tax and gratuity), your meal will include three courses: lobster and asparagus to begin, followed by Steak Florentine for two, served with sautéed Brussels sprouts, parsnips and bacon, and roasted fingerling potatoes with Brie. The dessert course will be Chocolate Hearts for Two with chocolate espresso and white chocolate raspberry served with warm chocolate sauce. Indulge at Carthay Circle We love the specialty sundaes at Clarabelle’s Hand-Scooped Ice Cream, so we’re happy to say they’ll be serving Valentine’s Sundaes all weekend long, from the 12th through the 14th. The following carts will be selling teddy bear-shaped bread and heart-shaped bread throughout the weekend: Mortimer’s Market, Pacific Wharf area carts, and the Boudin Bread Cart. The Pacific Wharf carts in particular will also have a Valentine Sugar Cookie up for grabs. Wine Country Trattoria will offer a February 14 special. An arugula salad will be followed by your choice of lobster tail or surf ‘n turf with beef tenderloin and shrimp with vegetables. A ricotta cannoli with a berry compote will be dessert. Wine Country Trattoria Right above the Trattoria, the Alfresco Tasting Terrace will serve a special dessert sampler: a vanilla fruit tart, raspberry macaroon, and tiramisu will be paired with a sparkling wine. Disneyland Resort HotelsSteakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel will offer a unique meal from February 13th – 16th. Shrimp and scallop cassoulet with fried artichoke and lobster cream will begin the three-course meal. The second and main course will feature broiled filet mignon with morel mushroom fettuccine and asparagus, while raspberry-white chocolate crunch cake will make up dessert. Guests will also find the same special available in the Steakhouse 55 Lounge. Napa Rose at Disney’s Grand Californian will serve “Chef Andrew Sutton’s Four-Course Country Valentine’s Day Dinner” on February 14th. Napa Rose Dining Room Storytellers Cafe will serve Bacon-wrapped Filet Mignon with a Cabernet reduction and lobster-sun-dried tomato risotto on Valentine’s Day. And finally, Disney’s PCH Grill buffet at the Paradise Pier Hotel will have a seafood saute station alongside their carving station and wood-fired pizza station (and don’t forget the Mini Taco station and Macaroni and Cheese bar). Happy (almost!) Chinese New Year! Learn About: Nine Dragons RestaurantEpcot Restaurants Disney World RestaurantsThe “Year of the Monkey” begins on February 8th, and Nine Dragons Restaurant in Epcot’s China Pavilion will celebrate with special menu items for nearly the whole year. From February 8, 2016 through January 27 of next year, guests at Nine Dragons will find a new prix-fixe option available for lunch as well as additional items on the regular menu. For lunch, the prix-fixe special will include three courses for $17.98. Begin your meal with spring rolls or pot stickers, then choose from three entrees for the main course: Happily Family (sliced chicken breast, beef and shrimp stir fry), Moo Goo Gai Pan featuring stir-fried chicken breast with mushrooms and snow peas, and General Tso’s Chicken Buns Lunch Box: three steamed buns (basically, these are Chinese tacos) and hot-and-sour soup. Greetings from Pop Culture Past… ‘cuz we’re back at Everything Pop Food Court at Pop Century Resort! Learn About: Everything Pop Food CourtDisney World RestaurantsWe JUST visited Landscape of Flavors in the Art of Animation Resort to try their new Miniature Whoopie Pies. I mention that because those unfamiliar with this area of Disney World may not know that it’s just a quick stroll over the bridge across Hourglass Lake to Pop Century. This is a huge boon for guests at either resort who have easy access to arguably two of the best food courts in Disney World. Hoping to try more exotic flavors? Hop on over to the Landscape. Craving comfort food served up with a side of quirkiness? Take a stroll to Everything Pop! Now typically, if I’m here for dessert, it’s because I’m craving the King Cupcake, which has earned a place of honor on my Disney Food Bucket List! But on this visit, fresh from Art of Animation, I couldn’t help but notice that Everything Pop is hopping on the Mini Train, too. In this case, it’s an assortment of Mini Dessert Tarts up for grabs, so let’s “pop” in for bite! AtmosphereEverything POP Food Court certainly lives up to its name… Everything Pop Shopping & Dining Sign It hosts a bright and fun atmosphere with lots of color and creativity. Everything Pop Seating Area Much like the other Value Resort food courts, seating abounds with primarily tables and chairs, while booths line the perimeters. Not overly comfy, but perfectly fitting for quick service eating. Everything Pop Seating Area And speaking of eating… EatsSeven food stations feature plenty of fun options such as Sloppy Joes, Beer Battered Fish and Chips, and a fairly recently added line of Specialty Burgers along with the old standbys like pizza and Chicken Breast Nuggets. Everything Pop Ordering Areas Grab an ice-cream or “Popaccino” espresso beverage for a little something sweet, or stop by the serve-yourself pastry case, which is where we find ourselves again today! Options include Chocolate Chip Cookies, Pineapple Upside-Down Cake and bite size Krispy Treats. Everything Pop Pastry Case The King Cupcake finds its home right among the specialty cupcakes (edible guitar pick included!). Cupcakes! But we’re here today to check out the Mini Tarts! Flavors available during my visit included Pumpkin and Pecan for starters. Mini Pumpkin Tarts Mini Pecan Tarts But fruit tarts made up the majority of the options with Blueberry, Apple, and Cherry. Mini Blueberry Tarts Mini Apple Tarts Mini Cherry Tarts I keep wanting to call these Mini POP Tarts due to their setting, but obviously that would imply a different snack-and-breakfast food entirely . But don’t worry, you can still get your fill of those, too, thanks to the Everything Pop Sundae, and the Pop-Tarts® Breakfast Sandwich (if you dare, on that last one… ;). Now, once again we’re looking at some mini treats here, so to offer some size perspective I placed all three of my chosen tarts on one plate. And this is one of the smaller snack and dessert plates, mind you. They’re $4.79 apiece, and eligible for a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan. Mini Tarts! Let’s dig into the Blueberry Tart first. Mini Blueberry Tart Simple enough, the same mini shell that you’ll see with all the tarts holds a generous amount of blueberry compote topped with little drizzles of white icing. Close Up of the Mini Blueberry Tart And that’s all she wrote! What you see is what you get, and the blueberry filling was nicely stacked with whole blueberries. Cross Section of the Mini Blueberry Tart The Apple Tart follows suit, with the exception of dark chocolate drizzle and a small smattering of some unexpected frosted flakes. (Wha??) Mini Apple Tart You can spy the hint of cinnamon mixed throughout the filling with plenty of that good ol’ gelatinous fruit pie filling goo (not the actual name, I’m guessing ), while the chocolate drizzle was put on with a light hand, offering just a hint of flavor. Close Up of the Mini Apple Tart Ultimately I rather enjoyed the frosted flakes, which added some nice crunch, almost like a “crumble” effect on a proper apple pie or crisp. Cross Section of the Mini Apple Tart Those of you who were fans of the Pecan Tart a la Mode may be happy to see my final choice, the Pecan Tart. Mini Pecan Tart I was pretty tempted to grab some ice cream at the dessert station to top it off, but you’ve got to check out the crusted pecans and maple that make up this thing. Close Up of the Mini Pecan Tart I loved the layering in this one, with the gooey filling and oodles of pecans going really well with the golden tart shell. Cross Section of the Mini Pecan Tart I’d say of all three, this one took the cake… I mean, tart. OverallSo, here’s the thing — no complaints on the tarts themselves. I found them to be tasty and well-crafted, and they pair nicely with some of the comfort food items you’ll find for entrees at Everything POP, like the Chicken Pot Pie. But at $4.79, they are more expensive that the Mini Whoopie Pies at Landscape of Flavors, without offering the same level of decadence. Speaking purely from a value perspective, it would be nice to see an offering of a two of them for one snack credit for the Disney Dining Plan. As it stands, these are nice options to have for folks utilizing a Counter Service credit who want a little something sweet for their dessert entitlement that comes with the meal, but don’t quite have room for something as rich as an entire serving of Tie-Dye Cheesecake. For those paying out-of-pocket, I’d recommend opting for one of the full-size choices, even though the variety of available flavors for the tarts can be pretty tempting. One thing’s for sure, it’s always worth taking a look around at Everything Pop, which always seems full of surprises, big and small! What’s your take on the mini trend? It’s c-c-cold out there, and wouldn’t some buttery, creamy soup hit the spot? Here’s a great option from Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant. Learn About: Raglan Road Irish PubDowntown Disney Disney World RestaurantsFrom their creamy Wild Forest Mushroom Chowder to their Potato Soup, every single soup I’ve tried at the Disney Springs hotspot has been incredible (mostly due to the copious amounts of butter and cream involved). And today, we’re sharing with you another must-have recipe. Colcannon Potatoes — a traditional mixture of silky mashed potatoes and cabbage — are one of the classic Irish sides that you can enjoy at the Pub. But they also serve as inspiration for this warming Colcannon Soup. Winter is with us for a few more months, so take the opportunity to whip up a batch of this indulgent soup for your next evening in. Potato Soup Colcannon Soup Served at Dunbrody Country House Hotel Colcannon SoupRaglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant Serves 4-6 Ingredients: 2oz streaky bacon (regular bacon is fine) Diced 1 onion, finely chopped 8oz potatoes, diced 1 leek, trimmed and thinly sliced 5½oz Savoy cabbage, thick stalks removed and shredded generous 3 cups vegetable stock or water, heated 2/3 cup cream 2 tablespoons butter, diced and at room temperature Instructions: 1. Heat a large pan and saute the bacon over a medium to high heat for a couple minutes. Reduce to a low heat, then add the onion, potatoes, leek and cabbage. Cover with a lid and cook for 10 minutes until well softened but not coloured, stirring occasionally. Pour the warm vegetable stock or water into the cabbage mixture and bring to the boil, then season to taste. Stir in the cream and simmer for a few minutes until the soup has a creamy texture. 2. Remove the soup from the heat and whisk in the butter. It is important not to re-boil the soup once the butter has been added, or you’ll find it will curdle. Disney California Adventure has removed the Donald Duck meet and greet gazebo on Paradise Pier for a very good reason; Cove Bar expansion! The new seating is adjacent to the existing bar. (If you are a Donald fan, don’t fret… Donald has been moved over to Buena Vista Street and he now has Daisy there as his companion.) Welcome Back to Cove Bar! I’m sure your first thought is, “Awesome, more seats, less wait!” But alas, this is far from the truth. I recently when to check out the expansion and some new menu items. It was a Friday just before noon and we still waited 45 minutes for a party of 2. Personally I think the Cove Bar is worth the wait, but I also think that if they filled the whole pier with Cove Bar seating, there would still be a long wait. It’s THAT good. You can see that others agree with me. This is the line we waited in. Cove Bar Line While in line, I noticed a cast member walking around with an iPad asking about party numbers and seating preferences (bar, table, new area, etc.). I immediately thought, “Oh, maybe they are taking advance dining reservations now!” But that wasn’t the case, she was just organizing the guests to get them into tables as they came up. I did request to sit in the new area; we could have been seated a little sooner (maybe by 10 or so minutes) if we would have opted for the bar. AtmosphereThe new area is covered and features both high and low table tops. The high tops are in the center and the low ones line the perimeter of the new area. Some of the low tops are waterfront, if you sit there, you’ll have a good view of Screamin’ as it takes off! Cove Bar Expansion We were seated at a low top along the edge of the restaurant. Here’s a high top next to us. Cove Bar High Top Table for 4 EatsThe current menu features 6 items with a few changes from the old menu. Cove Bar Place Setting Differences include: no more wings, replaced with Chorizo Fundido; the Quesadilla Rolls are now “Fajita” Quesadilla Rolls; and the pizza isn’t a “daily” special… Cove Bar Menu I really love the food at the Cove Bar. I’ve tried basically everything on the menu at some point and I have no complaints. This visit was basically a cheese fest! We ordered the new Chorizo Fundido, Fajita Quesadilla Rolls and Chicken Nachos (YES! Chicken!). Let’s talk about the new Chorizo Fundido. It’s delicious! Chorizo Fundido Aged Cheddar & Oaxaca Cheese Sauce mixed with Spicy Beer Glazed Chorizo served with Potato Chips. The dish comes out perfectly melted and piping hot. I thought it might be spicy, but it’s not. A tiny bit of a kick, but really pleasant. The salty homemade potato chips were an excellent vehicle with which to devour the Chorizo Fundido. Chorizo Fundido Close Up Next up? The famous Nachos served at the Cove Bar! I know people go nuts for the Lobster Nachos, but I actually prefer to go off menu and get the Chicken Nachos! Chicken Nachos Honestly if you go to the Cove Bar and don’t get some form of nachos, you’ll really be missing out. Topped with Aged Cheddar, Black Beans, Pico de Gallo, Chipotle Crema and Fresh Jalapenos, they’re a great item to share and incredibly tasty as well. The cheese is perfectly melted with some slightly “burnt” cheese mixed in there too! Slightly burnt cheese is my favorite. You can see a perfectly burnt cheese/chip in the photo above (bottom left), yum! Anyone else like their nacho cheese a little crispy in spots??? The amount of chicken on the nachos is very generous and all of the produce was fresh. The Chipotle Crema drizzled on top, I could take or leave. I don’t think it adds a huge difference to the dish. Chicken Nachos Close Up We also ordered the Fajita Quesadilla Rolls. Formerly known as “Quesadilla Rolls,” this great menu item is basically the same. Grilled Flour Tortilla rolled with Chicken, Onions, Peppers, Jack & Cheddar Cheese with Guajillo (a type of chili) Sauce, Chipotle Crema & Avocado Relish. Looks to me that the only difference to this item is that there are now two types of cheese being used. You can never go wrong with more cheese! Fajita Quesadilla Rolls The Fajita Quesadilla Rolls remind me of mini chimichangas minus the beans. Crispy outside, delicious chicken fajita filling and again there’s that Chipoltle Crema. The Guajillo sauce on the bottom has a great flavor, I prefer it much more than the Chipotle Crema (which you may have already noticed). Fajita Quesadilla Roll Cross Section The Avocado Relish served with the Fajita Quesadilla Rolls is really great. It’s sort of a salsa/guacamole hybrid and makes a perfect accompaniment to the rolls. Avocado Relish The drink menu at the Cove Bar is VERY extensive. You can see our fun adventure with several Cove Bar drinks here. This adventure was much more tame! Here’s a page from the drink menu that appeared new to me… I’m very curious about “Hard Root Beer.” I didn’t even know that was a thing! Maybe next time. A Sampling of Specialty Drinks Of course we had to try the Cotton Candy Lemonade. A gorgeous blue color, the lemonade comes with a fun pink straw topped with a large clump of cotton candy! It’s such a photogenic beverage. I did enjoy it, but no way would I be able to drink an entire glass. Very sweet, but also a hint of sour. Definitely worth a few sips. I say get one to share! The cotton candy on top is a very fun touch. Cotton Candy Lemonade Overall, if you have the time to wait, the Cove Bar is a must visit while on a Disneyland Resort trip. Both the atmosphere and food are incredible. You’ve got great views of Paradise Pier, great drinks, great food. I also love that you can modify the menu items with no problem. It’s easy to change up the meat, make a dish vegetarian, add alcohol to a non-alcoholic drink…. You know the important stuff! You really can’t go wrong here. Do you have a Cove Bar favorite? Do you have your Advance Dining Reservation to enjoy the Flying Fish as we know it for this, its final week? Though the Flying Fish will reopen later this Fall, its refurbishment — beginning on Monday, February 1st — will bring major changes to this BoardWalk favorite. Not only is the location being “reimagined” with a new look, but the Chef’s Counter experience will offer table seating in order to accommodate more guests. Flying Fish Even the menu will receive a makeover (though Disney has promised that the Potato-wrapped Snapper and seasonal approach will remain. I’m personally crossing my fingers for the return of my favorite Char-crusted Angus New York Strip Steak). Flying Fish Signature Duo featuring Potato-wrapped Snapper and Char-crusted Steak But Flying Fish isn’t the only BoardWalk eatery that will see some changes. Our friends at AllEars.Net have noted that Seashore Sweets, which is the next-door neighbor of the Flying Fish, will also be closing on February 1st. Seashore Sweets And indeed, a Cast Member at Seashore Sweets (which features hand-scooped ice cream alongside favorite Disney confections such as Krispy Treats, English Toffee, and oodles of bulk candy amidst memorabilia from the Miss America Pageant) has confirmed the closure, noting that it has not yet been decided if it will reopen in the Fall along with Flying Fish. Seashore Sweets decor It’s been rumored that the space now taken by Seashore Sweets was originally master-planned to be a shared bar/lounge between the restaurants on either side — currently Trattoria al Forno and Flying Fish Cafe. (That’s why you have to go through Seashore Sweets to get to the shared restroom for both restaurants! Perhaps they’ll finally open that bar/lounge in the space. We’re eager to see! So if you’re in the area, be sure to stop by this charming little sweets shop and wave goodbye to the Sisters of Seashore Sweets… just in case!
