I’m really looking forward to seeing Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new feature film “Moana,” a story about an adventurous teenager who, with help from demigod Maui, sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and save her people. Because most of the story takes place in and around the ocean, you can be sure Moana will encounter some memorable animals along the way. Disney has a long history of featuring animals in films to inspire a real connection to animals and the magic of nature. Since 2010, our Disneynature education team has built on that tradition by developing Educator’s Guides with lesson plans and background information that help students explore concepts in physics, astronomy, biology, literature and conservation. The guide for Moana is available now, and you can also download guides for films such as Disneynature African Cats, Wings of Life, Chimpanzee, Bears, Monkey Kingdom and the upcoming 2017 release Born In China. There are even guides for The Jungle Book and Finding Dory. Academic, conservation and environmental education experts develop lessons for these guides and align them to the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core. The guides provide teachers with a collection of STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) materials that can be used to promote nature exploration and discovery. Research shows that outdoor experiences, such as those found in the Educator’s Guides, increase children’s health, happiness and academic success. Applying lesson plans that increase the time spent outdoors in nature helps foster concern and care about the planet throughout a child’s lifetime. To further provide students with conservation stories, the Disneynature education team partners with the Disney Conservation Fund to showcase how individuals and organizations can help reverse the decline of species. By learning more about the animals featured in each guide and spending time outdoors through interactive lessons, students can become empowered to create positive changes for wildlife in their school, community and world. Pumpkin lattes, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cake, pumpkin mousse – nothing tops this from-scratch milkshake from Artist Point at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge at Walt Disney World Resort. Artist Point celebrates the flavors and wines of the Pacific Northwest, and this seasonal sweet fits right in. The beautiful dining room, inspired by grandiose, historic national park lodges is the perfect setting for fall’s flavors, like roasted fall squash soup, butter-poached wild halibut, crispy Brussels sprouts and this pumpkin shake served with housemade almond butter cookies. But if you can’t make it to the restaurant (407-WDW-DINE), here’s the recipe to make at home. You’ll need an ice-cream maker and a little time. But the creamy shake is worth the effort. And you can always skip the shakes and just savor the silky ice cream with a slice of pumpkin pie on Turkey Day. Pumpkin Milkshakes Serves 4-6 Pumpkin Ice Cream 1 cup canned or fresh pumpkin 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 egg yolks 3/4 cup brown sugar, divided 2 cups heavy cream, divided 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 tablespoon bourbon whiskey Milkshakes 3 cups Pumpkin Ice Cream 1 1/2 cups heavy cream, plus more, if needed For pumpkin ice cream: Whisk pumpkin and vanilla in a small bowl until combined. Refrigerate until ready to use. Combine egg yolks, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup heavy cream, ginger, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg in a bowl, whisking until sugar is dissolved. Set aside. Combine remaining 1 1/2 cups of heavy cream and 1/2 cup of brown sugar in a medium saucepan. Whisk over medium heat for 5 minutes, or until bubbles form around edge of pan. Remove from heat. Gradually whisk 1/2 cup of warm cream and sugar into egg mixture until smooth. Pour egg mixture into saucepan with cream and sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon for 5 minutes, or until custard is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon, but not boiling. Strain custard through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. Place bowl in an ice bath and stir to cool. Whisk pumpkin mixture into custard. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing directly to top of custard. Refrigerate at least 3 hours. Transfer to an ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer’s instructions. Add bourbon during the last minute of churning. Store covered in freezer until ready to serve. For milkshakes: Place ice cream and heavy cream in a blender. Blend on medium speed until smooth, adding additional heavy cream if milkshakes are too thick. Pour into glasses and serve. View the full article

Today we’re happy to announce that a new nighttime projection show, “Once Upon a Time,” will debut at Magic Kingdom Park on November 4. In this new show, Mrs. Potts from “Beauty and the Beast” shares bedtime stories with Chip, taking them (and all of us) on a magical trip through the most adventurous scenes from favorite Disney films like “Cinderella,” “Peter Pan,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.” Scenes that are expected to be guest-favorites include a flight with Peter Pan from London to Never Land, the Mad Hatter’s whimsical tea party, and a daring duel between Gaston and Beast. Mrs. Potts and Chip end their bedtime story with a grand finale that includes appearances by characters from even more Disney films. The show, which was inspired by one of a similar name at Tokyo Disneyland Park, uses projection mapping technology to cover every nook and cranny of Cinderella Castle in vibrant images that appear almost three-dimensional. “Once Upon A Time” will replace the current “Celebrate the Magic” projection show, which will end its run on November 3. Get ready for DONUUUUUUUUUTTTTS!!!! Donuts for Dayzzzz And thanks to our intrepid Dining in Disneyland guru, Heather Sievers, we have a FIRST LOOK at these gourmet beauties…that happen to be selling out in Disneyland pretty regularly, we hear. As you know, we are big fans of this particular pastry here at DFB. Witness our post about the Big Ol’ Donut at Joffrey’s Carts throughout Walt Disney World, or check out the killer mini donuts at Disney Water Parks — again, a Joffrey’s thing. Heck, we’ve even talked about donuts near Disneyland. See? It’s clear that the donut love runs deep. But now, we’re actually seeing them IN Disneyland. You can find these confections at the Coffee Cart on Main Street. And the price tag may seem a little steep. But these aren’t garden variety donuts, by any stretch. Donut Pricing The day we investigated, we found 3 different varieties. To begin, check out the Fruity Pebble Donut. The plain Long John Glazed Donut is topped with Yellow-tinted Vanilla Frosting and a generous blanket of Fruity Pebbles. Fruity Pebbles Donut The next version was also a Long John (that’s donut-ese for oblong and rectangular), but this one features Chocolate Icing, Peanut Butter Cup Triangles, and Chocolate Pearls in the season’s signature color. Preeeeeeettttyyyyyyy. Peanut Butter Cup Donut I’m calling the last one the Waffle Cone Donut, because it’s topped with Vanilla Icing and all manner of Sprinkles — both Jimmies/Sprinkles and Mini M&Ms. But the pièce de résistance are the shards of Waffle Cone embedded in the icing. It would be a mess to eat. But seriously. Who cares. Waffle Cone Donut We hear that there are three more varieties, but we haven’t caught ‘em yet. When we do, you’ll be the first to know! If you’re looking for these over-the-top treats, be sure to stop by either right after the Park opens, or again at 6:00PM, when the day’s second batch arrives. I’m totally heading there now to grab a Disneyland Donut or THREE. OH, and while Heather didn’t try them yet, our Instagram friend Grudiowerx says the Fruity Pebble one is his favorite. Are you heading to Hawaii and looking for some fresh resort wear? Well, I’m excited to share that two new resort wear lines from Hawaii-based Tori Richard are now available exclusively at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa! The first line, “Disney Village,” is a collection of cyan blue aloha shirts for men and boys, and dresses for women and girls. There is more than meets the eye with the print’s vibrant designs, which creatively illustrate Hawaii’s heritage–including artwork of sailing canoes, the legendary Menehune, the taro plant and even a few hidden Mickeys. Also depicted is the generous bounty from both the ‘āina (land) and moana (ocean), which represent the importance of harvesting from the fertile soil of the islands and the surrounding waters. The line is a stylish appreciation of Hawaii that is distinctly Aulani. The second line, “Disney Synchro,” includes two aloha shirts for men available in aqua and green. The shirts’ print subtly feature the Hawaii State fish, Humuhumunukunukuāpua‘a (try saying that three times in a row!). If you look closely, an “Aulani fish” appears in the design with the joining of the resort’s iconic arches. The shirts “move” as the fish swim through the dynamic, oceanic current. Okay, so there are PLENTY of changes happening in Disney’s Hollywood Studios that you probably know about already. For instance, construction is underway for the future Toy Story and Star Wars Lands, and that’s resulted in the closure of several eateries around the park (most recently, we said goodbye to Writer’s Stop). “Please Pardon Our Pixie Dust” But you may not be aware of some of the more recent changes at the park. Perhaps you missed the announcement of an all-new holiday spectacular — Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! — which will debut on November 14th. ©Disney And did you know that the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame has officially closed? That was the area of bust sculptures dedicated to television stars and influencers of the medium like Oprah Winfrey, Lucille Ball, and Walt Disney himself, among others. Well, a plan is already in place for the area, and it involves our favorite thing: FOOD! According to the Orlando Sentinel, a spokeswoman for Walt Disney World stated that the Academy area will be replaced with a food and beverage marketplace. Construction Sign at Hollywood Studios While it is anticipated that the area will be cleared by Thanksgiving, we’re not sure when the Marketplace will be ready. If it is to be a permanent offering for the park, construction could take some time. But it might be fun to see something akin to this past summer’s temporary Echo Lake Eats nearby in the meantime, as Hollywood Studios is sure to see some extra traffic when Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! begins next month. As many of you know, we’ve been showing a preview of scenes from “Doctor Strange” at some Disney Parks. Well, this Sunday, October 30, 2016, we’re offering the opportunity to be part of a special advance screening of the entire film at Disney Springs in Florida before the film opens in U.S. theaters on November 4. The Disney Parks Blog hosted meet-up begins at 11 a.m. ET (doors open at 10 a.m) at AMC Disney Springs 24 at Walt Disney World Resort on Sunday, October 30, 2016. At the event, you’ll see the complete “Doctor Strange” film. “Doctor Strange” is the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange, whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place – a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. Planet Hollywood Observatory is opening soon at the West Side area of Disney Springs! Learn About: Planet Hollywood Observatory Downtown Disney Disney World Restaurants And while we don’t yet know the opening date, we do know a few things. For instance, the refurbished restaurant (formerly Planet Hollywood – the “Observatory” part will be unique to Disney Springs) will offer four floors as well as outdoor dining, along with a 4,000 square foot video wall, live entertainment, and the Stargazers bar. The location also shared that they have partnered with Food Network’s Guy Fieri in creating an exclusive Burger and Sandwich menu for the location. Other new dishes as well as Planet Hollywood favorites will also be available. And now we know one more thing… Planet Hollywood Observatory will be serving some over-the-top ice cream creations in the form of some super-loaded Supernova Shakes. Oh, AND an entire slice of cake! The Chocolate Shake seems to include a whole smorgasbord of candies like mini peanut butter cups, mini M&Ms, and chocolate-covered malt balls while garnishing with a Kit Kat, a wafer straw, and a BROWNIE. If that last shake on the right is Cotton Candy, it’s complemented with gumdrops and chocolate-dipped pretzels, then topped with whipped cream, cotton candy, and a big swirly lollipop. I think a bit of sugar shock kicked in just while writing that paragraph . Now, while these shakes are certainly eye-catching, we have spotted similar items before. In fact, these “super-loaded” shakes seem to be a trend in casual restaurant dining at the moment. The upcoming Paddlefish restaurant (also slated to open later this fall) has been providing sneak peeks of their newest creations via their social media accounts. One of the new menu items they’ve shared are shakes that, while not quite as bold as the Supernovas, definitely have some plentiful toppings involved and were also previewed in a similar mason jar serving style. @paddlefishORL Instagram And we’ve heard tell of similar goodies at The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen, the new Willy Wonka-themed restaurant at Universal Studios. Attention princesses and royal knights! It is with great pleasure we announce the addition of Royal Court Royal Tea to all four Disney ships. Families have been enjoying this royal celebration on the Disney Fantasy, and most recently during 4-night cruises onboard the Disney Dream. It will soon be available on 3-night Disney Dream voyages, kicking off on the Nov. 4 sailing. The Disney Wonder will also whisk children and parents off to this magical affair starting Nov. 10, and on the Disney Magic, the tea will be offered beginning Dec. 11. Of course, no royal celebration would be complete without a visit from Disney Princesses. Lady Chamomile, the Royal Tea Hostess, and Chef Brule, the Royal Pastry Chef, host the stately celebration, and the pair presents the princesses and knights with some of their most delightful culinary specialties. We have more news today regarding the Epcot Candlelight Processional as part of your Holidays Around the World celebration. The Candlelight Processional is a HUGELY popular holiday event in Disney World, featuring the retelling of the Christmas story by a celebrity narrator, and the reading is accompanied by a choir and a full orchestra performing Christmas carols.
