During a recent visit to Disney’s Days of Christmas at Disney Springs Marketplace, I was surprised by a special holiday delivery from the Disney Delivery Guy. The new holiday products shown in the video are starting to arrive in select merchandise locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. I love the Woodland Winter artwork found on the home décor items. This artwork was created by several Disney Design Group artists including Fabiola Garza Villalobos, Caley Hicks, and Tim Whalen. The retro-inspired artwork was designed to complement the Holidays for Your Home collection we first introduced in fall 2014. The three Dooney & Bourke handbags – Tote, Crossbody, and Wristlet – will be released on November 11 at Cherry Tree Lane in the Marketplace Co-Op at Disney Springs Marketplace, and in select Disneyland Resort merchandise locations. Guests may also find limited quantities available via the Shop Disney Parks app that day. The Raglan I’m wearing in the video will be available on the Disney Parks online store from November 7-13, 2016. The shirt was designed by Disney Design Group artist Richard Terpstra. Disney Parks will officially kick off the holiday season on television earlier than ever this year, with three musical holiday specials set to air Nov. 24 & 25 and Dec. 25. Shot at both the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and the Disneyland Resort in California, each of the three shows will feature special musical performances and celebrity appearances. Here’s the schedule: “The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration” on ABC on Nov. 24, from 8-1 p.m. EST. Emmy Award-winners Julianne and Derek Hough will serve as hosts for this two-hour special from the Walt Disney World Resort, which will also feature “Descendants 2” star Sofia Carson, a duet by Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks, and a performance by Kelly Clarkson. “Disney Parks Presents: A Descendants Magical Holiday Celebration” on Disney Channel on Nov. 25 from 8-9 p.m. EST. Musical performers include Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson and Booboo Stewart, “Descendants 2” star China Anne McClain, Trisha Yearwood with Garth Brooks, and Kelly Clarkson. ABC stars and Disney Channel stars will also surprise philanthropic families around the country with once-in-a-lifetime experiences at the Walt Disney World Resort. “The Disney Parks’ Magical Christmas Celebration” on the ABC on Dec. 25, from 9-11 a.m. EST. Holidays are just about to begin at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and you won’t want to miss any of the special food, merchandise and entertainment that are here just for the season! In today’s Disney Doodle, artist Ashley Taylor imagines what the mermaids from “Peter Pan” would do first if they visited a Disney theme park. What better for a mermaid to do than to check out the home of the most famous mermaid in Disney history – Ariel? “I’ve always loved the Neverland mermaids and I thought they would find New Fantasyland’s Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid a charming place for them to have fun in the sun,” she said. We couldn’t agree more. Today, DFB welcomes guest author Jennifer Storelli with a table-service restaurant review from Walt’s in Disneyland Paris. As an experienced Walt Disney World Resort fan but first-timer at Disneyland Paris, I had a difficult time selecting a table-service restaurant for dinner. The options ranged from character buffets, to a Wild West dinner show, to movie-themed restaurants, to upscale steakhouses, and more. Fortunately for me, I had until my arrival at my resort to make a decision, because I was not willing to pay for an international call to Disneyland Paris dining to make a reservation. Disneyland Paris As my husband and I enjoyed the sites of Paris and made our way to the more familiar setting of Disneyland Paris, we decided we wanted an upscale venue to celebrate our last night of vacation and a taste of American food. Plus, when we read reviews that said Walt’s is an open-to-the-public version of the coveted Club 33 in Disneyland, we were sold. When I arrived at my hotel, I nervously asked concierge to make me a dinner reservation for two days later. I’ve tried making plans for Disney World restaurants as far as 90 days in advance and still could not get reservations for my first-choice spots. However, when I requested a reservation for a Friday night reservation in late April, the concierge cast member smiled and said, “Certainly, what time would you like?” It was that easy—but maybe that was because we visited at an off-peak time. Atmosphere Naturally, Disney placed Walt’s right where it should be: right in the middle of Main Street, U.S.A. True to Disney style, the building’s architecture blends right in with the rest of area’s turn-of-the-century, Marceline, Missouri-inspired charm—to the point that, if you didn’t know the restaurant was there, you would walk right past it. Walt’s—an American restaurant greets guests in the middle of Main Street, U.S.A. Inside the restaurant lobby, guests are greeted with elegant charm, including Victorian-style couches for seating, a grandfather clock, and matching furniture. I was immediately drawn to the gorgeous grand piano as well as a bust of the main man himself. The elegant lobby of Walt’s includes a grand piano. We did not have much time to explore the lobby, though, because we were called to our table within minutes of arrival. As we climbed the stairs to the dining area, I lingered to look at the pictures of famous moments from Walt’s history. Photos of Walt planning and opening Disneyland, animating, and receiving his Academy Award from Shirley Temple for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” took us back in time and deeper into Disney history. Walt’s dream for Disneyland becomes a reality. Walt receives an honorary Academy Award for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Walt puts his creative genius to paper. At the top of the stairs, a hostess greeted us and ushered us to the Disneyland Hotel room, which featured sketches and photographs that inspired the design of the Disneyland Hotel. The Disneyland Hotel room is decorated with sketches and photographs that inspired the architecture of the Disneyland Hotel. This particular parlor was small and cozy, which left my husband and I feeling a bit cramped at a corner table for two. We noticed a couple of empty tables near windows overlooking Main Street, U.S.A., and kindly requested to be moved to one of those, but a cast member informed us that it was not possible to be reseated, which was a bummer. The Disneyland Hotel room is a cozy parlor overlooking Main Street, U.S.A. However, the background music, which featured classical versions of Disney songs—including “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” “Bella Notte,” “Once Upon a Dream,” and “it’s a small world”—put me right back in a good mood. Eats The menu at Walt’s offers a la carte options as well as prix-fixe menus, which include a starter and entrée (Flower Street Menu) or a starter, entrée, and dessert (Market Street and Main Street menus). Because it was our last night in Paris, we decided to go big and each ordered from the Market Street Menu, which cost 37.99 Euros (or about $43 at the time) per person, to indulge in some dessert. Walt’s menu Walt’s Menu Detail Although I felt a little bad for spending so much on dinner, my husband and I were really excited about the wine prices. We split a 750-milliliter bottle of Bordeaux AOC Dourthe No. 1 sauvignon blanc, which cost 24.99 Euros. That means for about $28 we each got about three glasses of wine. When I compared that with the approximately $10 a drink we pay at Disney World, we felt that we got a pretty good deal. We were also pretty happy with the taste of the wine. I’m not really a big red-wine person, but this wine offered me the perfect balance of sweet and dry. Prior to receiving our food, we were served hot, fresh French rolls. Most French restaurants do not serve butter with bread, and Walt’s followed this custom instead of the American custom. However, these rolls were so warm and delicious that they did not need butter to be enjoyable. Bordeaux AOC Dourthe No. 1 and a fresh French roll For our starters, we both selected the cream of butternut squash soup with goat’s cheese emulsion and maple syrup. The dish first arrived as a bowl with a few small greens in the middle. But before I could ask if I was given the wrong starter, my waiter returned with a tea kettle full of piping hot soup, which he poured into the bowl. A+ for presentation! Cream of butternut squash soup The soup at first reminded me of baby food, but as soon as I tasted it, I decided that it was delicious enough for my adult palate, too. It was creamy, slightly sweet, and warm, which hit the spot on a cold spring day. For our entrées, my husband and I both selected the grilled prime cut beef with confit potatoes, mixed salad, and spiced butter. In my effort to be a good adult, I started with my salad, which had a mustard-tasting dressing. The potatoes were soft and tasted delicious once I added a dash of salt. The pièce de résistance—the beef—was a bit chewy at medium-well but juicy nonetheless. I appreciated the touch of pepper in the rub, which added a bit of flavor to beef. Grilled prime cut beef The dessert list had too many enticing options, so my husband and I chose different ones and shared. My husband selected the Bailey’s crème brûlée, which tasted like a Baileys Original Irish Cream–flavored pudding. After I tasted it, I slightly regretted my dessert choice. Bailey’s crème brûlée However, in my book, chocolate is always a good choice, so my warm chocolate fondant with pistachio emulsion and fruit did not disappoint. As promised in the name, the chocolate fondant was served warm with oozing chocolate sauce in the middle. I had never had a pistachio emulsion before, but it was basically a pistachio-flavored whipped cream. The chocolate chips mixed into the emulsion were like chocolate Pop Rocks and had a bit more bang than the relatively tame fireworks displayed at Disneyland Paris. Warm chocolate fondant Overall If you’re looking for a fancier dining option with rich Disney history, Walt’s is the place. The setting and service were formal, with the server pouring our wine for us and preparing our soup right at the table. With that amount of class, we did feel a little out of place in our play clothes, and we partially wondered if that had anything to do with the reason we could not be reseated to a window table. Although we were not traveling with children, families at the tables around us had well-behaved children, and we saw the hosts carrying around high chairs, so clearly children are welcome. The service also felt a little slow, considering that we waited 20 minutes before our server came to offer us drinks, but guests should keep in mind that dining experiences tend to be a bit more relaxed (read: slower) in Europe. However, we enjoyed the opportunity to delve into some Disney history while enjoying some American-style food. Plus, after our 2-hour dining experience was over, we could walk right down Main Street, U.S.A., into the park for more Disney fun. We’re just days away from the premiere of “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” aboard the Disney Wonder! I hope you’ve been enjoying our making-of videos, and today I want to share the final video in our series before the curtain rises on this incredible new show… Snow and ice plays a unique role throughout the entire production, and special effects will bring Elsa’s enchanted icy blasts to reality like never before. Did you know that there is a barber shop at Magic Kingdom Park? If you didn’t, you are missing out and need to visit it! I have been two times to the Harmony Barber Shop, located in Town Square near the fire station and the Emporium store on Main Street U.S.A. Since I am a Disney obsessed fan, I wanted my son to get his first haircut at the barber shop. Esa visita was in February of this year, when he was 17 months old. It included a sample of my son’s trimmed hair, a certificate and embroidered Mickey ears that read ‘first haircut.’ I admit that I cried during the experience. Mi bebé now had a big boy haircut, courtesy of one of the barbers at the shop. The second time was this past October, and we had the blessing of having the same barber from the first visit. And although we didn’t get any special recuerdos, certificate or ears, I confess to crying…again! The barbers and the Cast at the Harmony Barber Shop are simply maravillosos. They help little kids (and their parents) stay calm during their haircuts, with bubbles, stickers and toys. The barber even gave me tissues to wipe my tears, both times! Let’s get to know a few of the 2016 Conservation Heroes: The Karisoke Research Center Gorilla Trackers and Antipoachers Nominated by Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International This team of 70 courageous people is directly responsible for the current growth and stability of Rwanda’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. Working in teams to protect specific groups of gorillas, they’ve had dangerous close calls related to the extreme elements and landscape, as well as direct run-ins with poachers. The trackers can tell each gorilla apart and know their histories and behaviors well. Collectively the group spends 365 days 110,000 hours per year protecting and monitoring the gorillas, supporting scientific research, and helping to maintain the biodiversity of the forest, as they have done for nearly 50 years. Diorene Smith Cabellos Nominated by ZSL America Diorene Smith Cabellos established the first and only ongoing research program to monitor the elusive pygmy sloth, which is found only on a small island off the coast of Panama. Diorene collects crucial population data on this critically endangered species and also studies human disturbance and use of natural resources across the island. Her work requires enduring inhospitable field conditions which require innovative solutions to technology that malfunctions in the wet, salt-laden environment. Managing and conserving the pygmy sloth is a sensitive issue locally, but Diorene works closely with local schools, divers, and fishermen to raise awareness and promote sustainable resource use. What may be most amazing about Diorene is that she’s managed to do all of this important conservation work in her spare time while working as a full-time zoo curator and veterinarian! Sergei Sleptsov and Ivan Danilov Nominated by International Crane Foundation Each summer and fall Sergei Sleptsov and Ivan Danilov endure Russia’s harsh tundra conditions – coping with daily temperature fluctuations of 50 degrees or more, clouds of mosquitos and gnats, and rain and snow – to conduct vital research on the critically endangered Siberian crane. Their field region covers two million acres and often they are only able to reach their study sites on foot, carrying heavy supplies and gear. Sergei has provided invaluable data on cranes, participating in many international field expeditions to monitor their migration. He was even one of the first scientists who was able to capture Siberian crane chicks in order to band them. In his long career, Ivan has led efforts to establish protected areas for cranes and collected valuable scientific data used to justify protected area status in key crane breeding areas. All of these individuals demonstrate that with hard work and dedication you can make your community – and the world – a better place. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is returning to Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort on select nights starting November 7, 2016. Here’s a brief look at the commemorative merchandise created for this year’s event. A new limited edition retail MagicBand was created for the event. This MagicBand will have an edition size of 3,000 and will be presented in a decorative box. Guests will also find short and long-sleeved apparel for both adults and kids. Annual Passholders will find a special t-shirt designed just for them. This shirt contains the overall event logo on the back of the shirt with “Passholder” printed on the sleeve. Other commemorative products include a holiday ornament featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and a new D-Tech on Demand case available for select mobile devices in the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. A limited release logo pin will be found at several locations throughout the park. We will also release a limited edition pin only available to Annual Passholders. This pin will have an edition size of 3,000. This year’s limited edition pin collection includes hinged pins that open to reveal classic Disney characters including Lilo and Stitch or Beast and Belle. Each pin will have an edition size of 5,300. The jumbo-sized, limited edition pin featuring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Pluto enjoying as sleigh ride will have an edition size of 1,000.
