Finishing touches are being made for the April 10 opening of The Polite Pig in Town Center at Disney Springs, the newest concept for award-winning Orlando Chefs James and Julie Petrakis. The husband-wife team, also owners of The Ravenous Pig and Swine & Sons in Winter Park and Cask & Larder at Orlando International Airport, are opening this newest concept with James Petrakis’ brother Brian. The Polite Pig will feature “modern barbecue” in an open kitchen, with Southern sides like a tomato and watermelon salad, mac and cheese and smoked corn with lime butter. (Sauce fans, there’s a bar with seven different ways to top your ‘cue, from Layla’s Sweet to Fresno Hot Sauce.) Add a solid selection of craft beers and cocktails, and a bourbon bar with more than 50 selections, from small batch bourbons to a Pappy Van Winkle 23-Year Family Reserve. We talked with Julie, who met James, by the way, while studying at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. Both are Central Florida natives. Why did you decide to open at restaurant at Disney Springs? Disney approached us with the idea of opening a fast-casual outpost that would represent the atmosphere and quality of our Winter Park location, The Ravenous Pig. We shared their enthusiasm for bringing a true local restaurant to Disney Springs. Is the menu similar to The Ravenous Pig and Cask & Larder, your other restaurants in Central Florida? I would say that the menu is similar in its approach to using quality, seasonal ingredients, with our signature touch. We’ll have Cask & Larder Brewery beers, cocktails on tap and also an extensive Bourbon Bar. And this restaurant will focus a bit more on wood-smoked and grilled items. Anything you’ll offer at The Polite Pig that will be a signature, or exclusive to that restaurant? Most of the menu will be exclusive to The Polite Pig: modern barbecue with The Ravenous Pig twist. Like the Southern Pig Sandwich with pulled pork off the smoker, apple slaw, mustard sauce and Duke’s mayo; peel-and-eat shrimp with bourbon-cocktail sauce, and crispy Brussels sprouts with whiskey caramel. Who will be the chef daily in The Polite Pig kitchen? We have two of our Ravenous Pig/Cask & Larder veterans at the helm, Jared Thate and Allie Weldon, along with Chef James Petrakis’ guidance and inspiration. Tell us about the craft beer program. We will feature four of our beloved Cask & Larder Brewery brews on tap, as well as a couple other Florida/domestic craft beers. Anything special about The Polite Pig cocktails? We will feature five house cocktails on tap, including some of our crowd favorites from The Ravenous Pig, such as the Gin and Tonic and Old-Fashioned. How many seats and describe the décor. We’ll have 190 seats, and the décor pays homage to the beloved swine of The Polite Pig, as well as antiquity. Whimsical pigs on various adventures can be seen throughout the space, and rustic touches are used for custom featured art pieces. Large faded graphics also adorn the main wall of the space adding to the feel of the long-time family run business. What’s your favorite dish on The Polite Pig menu? My favorite appetizer is the Hop Salt Pretzel with beer cheese fondue and IPA mustard. Favorite sandwich: the Salmon BLT with bacon jam, marinated tomato, romaine and aioli. I love that with a side of charred broccoli tossed with herb buttermilk dressing and house granola. What do you think is the secret to good food? Using quality seasonal ingredients and taking great care of it by enhancing with smoke/cooking, proper seasoning and passion! View the full article

Today, we’re heading into Disney’s Animal Kingdom to do what we always do… Learn About: Mr. Kamal's Animal Kingdom Disney World Restaurants A little exploring, accompanied by a little snacking! And once again, we’re going vegetarian, because that’s a particularly easy thing to do when it comes to snacking at Animal Kingdom. We’ve already learned, in fact , that the focus on providing above par vegetarian options will continue in Animal Kingdom’s upcoming land, Pandora — The World of AVATAR, thanks to a look at the full menu for Satu’li Canteen (the land’s primary dining establishment). But today we’re winding down a well-traveled path heading from the Africa section of Animal Kingdom into Asia, with a visit to Mr. Kamal’s, which remains one of our favorite kiosks in the park. Mr. Kamal’s Kiosk Mr. Kamal’s kiosk has proven itself time and time again as a great (and convenient) spot to grab something quick, portable, and vegetarian. The current menu features Hummus served with mini pitas and veggies, Samosa, and falafel, to give you an idea of what to expect. Since we’ve already noshed on the Hummus and Samosa, this time we grabbed the Falafel, which comes to you in this handy little paper box. (You might remember some time ago when it was served as part of the Falafel Sandwich). Falafel and Tzatiziki — In the Box So here they are, all ready to eat! Falafel and Tzatziki The order comes with five pieces, which are accompanied with a side of Tzatziki Sauce. The texture was spot on, nice and firm outside. Falafel — Up Close The soft middle was packed with the usual chickpeas, parsley, and red pepper. They carried very minimal spice (cumin is traditionally used in Falafel, and I detected a few hints of it), and I could taste some garlic as well. Mr. Kamal’s Falafel Inside The tzatziki sauce was a smooth yogurt with tiny flecks of herbs. It didn’t provide much flavor, but it was a creamy, cool foil to the crunchy and savory falafel. Tzatziki — Up Close Overall, this dish is a decent size for the $4.99 pricetag (or a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan). The Falafel hit all the right flavor and textural notes, and the tzatziki was a solid (though not overly potent) accompaniment. So let’s give one more nod of appreciation to our friend, Mr. Kamal. Don’t worry, buddy… even when Pandora opens (on May 27th!! WE CAN’T WAIT!!!), you can rest assured that we’ll keep stopping by to pay you a visit. Is Mr. Kamal’s one of your favorite snack stops? Congratulations to the Tomorrowland Movers at Walt Disney World Resort for being crowned the ultimate Disney attraction for March Magic 2017. The Tomorrowland Movers defeated the Gracey Manor Ghouls in the championship match-up held on April 3 via the official Walt Disney World Facebook page. The March Magic 2017 online fan vote began in mid-March with 18 teams inspired by attractions from across all four parks at Walt Disney World Resort. This year’s champion team was inspired by the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover attraction in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park. Since July 1, 1975, guests have taken the 10-minute tour of Tomorrowland aboard this emission-free mass transit system of the future. During the narrated tour, guests go behind the scenes of some of Tomorrowland’s most popular attractions including Space Mountain or Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. You will also spot early architectural models of Progress City, a conceptual predecessor of Epcot. To celebrate, we are introducing a specially designed Tomorrowland Movers logo jersey with matching logo bag. Guests may find the new champion gear and all other March Magic 2017 commemorative products until April 13 on DisneyStore.com/MarchMagic. Thank you to Disney Parks fans who voted for their favorite attraction-inspired teams during March Magic this year. I loved seeing your excitement and reading comments about favorite Disney memories during each match-up. View the full article

Let’s take a look around the Disney Twitter-sphere and see what’s happening this week! Can’t get enough “Beauty and the Beast”? Oh My Disney has info on the sing-a-long version coming to theaters! View the full article

With Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” now in theaters, I recently returned to D-Living in Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort. In January, this dynamic location was magically transformed into a charming boutique inspired by the opulent castle from the new live-action film. The shop is filled with many little details to discover thanks to dedicated Cast Members from Merchandise Presentation and Creative Services with Disney Parks Merchandise. I recently spoke with team members about their work on this enchanting destination in Town Center. “We began planning the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ theme shortly after [D-Living] opened last November,” explained Melissa Calderon, who is one of eight Cast Members supporting Merchandise Presentation in the Disney Springs area. “We had a handful of days to physically transform the location, so collaboration was critical. Everyone on my team helped with fabrication including designing, building, and painting all the props guests see. One of the best parts of my role is getting to work on projects like this with such creative people.” Guests visiting D-Living will immediately recognize one of Melissa’s beautiful contributions to the shop – a paper flower encased in a glass dome. “My mother used to make paper flowers,” said Melissa. “I had never tried making a paper rose. I used tea-stained, printed paper that looked like pages from a book. I love reading but couldn’t bring myself to use pages from an actual book [laughs]. While the rose only took me a couple of hours to create, the hand painted ribbons with French phrases for one display wall seemed to take forever.” Before the Merchandise Presentation team installed the props, Paul Seus, a Creative Services Cast Member, had already spent a month designing graphics for the location, including wallpaper that looks like a wall of books. “In total, there are about 2,000 books guests see in the library-themed section, “said Paul. “I hid a few references to other Disney animated classics on some book spines. On the column capitals, guests may also find hidden roses which were inspired by the Beast’s enchanted flower from the film.” For Melissa, the positive response from guests about her team’s work in D-Living is a highlight. “I’ve loved seeing photos of the shop and reading comments from our guests about their visits on social media and the Disney Parks Blog. It’s a rewarding feeling knowing I’ve helped make a guest’s experience even more magical.” View the full article

From May through September this year and next, our grand tour of Europe will journey through the Baltic, Norwegian fjords, Iceland, British Isles and the Mediterranean. Over the next several weeks, I’ll be giving you suggestions on incredible Port Adventures you won’t want to miss. Today let’s start with Amsterdam, known for its elaborate canal system, tulip fields, windmills and world-class museums housing works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh. We offer several great sightseeing tours, many that include a canal boat ride, for those who want to fully explore this world-famous capital city. But if you’re looking for an authentic and one-of-a-kind Dutch experience, consider joining a Port Adventure that takes you beyond modern-day Amsterdam and immerses you in old-world culture. Volendam and Wooden Shoe Workshop – During your adventure in Volendam, a charming harbor town renowned for its wooden shoes and traditional Dutch culture, enjoy a visit to a shoemaker’s workshop to see how the Netherland’s famous clogs are crafted and decorated. This cultural experience is completed by a delicious Dutch-style three-course lunch at a local restaurant, a guided tour of the village and free time to explore the old boats, fresh fish displays and famous traditional costumes. One of the best parts? You’ll return back to the Disney Magic with your own pair of Dutch wooden shoes! Grand Holland Tour & Delft Pottery Workshop – This hands-on adventure also takes you through the beautiful Netherlands countryside – dotted with windmills, canals and farms – to a charming Dutch town. After a guided tour where you can view the largest collection of original paintings by Van Gogh in the world, your art teacher will discuss the painter’s life, art and technique. During my recent visit to Disneyland, I decided it was time to check in once more with one of my favorite counter service spots, Pacific Wharf Cafe in Disney California Adventure. The restaurant is located on Pacific Wharf (natch), and features a San Francisco signature item — Boudin Bakery’s famous Sourdough Bread – made in the bakery next door! Pacific Wharf Cafe I really love the food here, and I’m especially partial to their hearty Soups served in Boudin Sourdough Bread Bowls. On this visit, I figured it was time to introduce you to a few new flavors, though. So come with us as we explore some of Pacific Wharf’s other must-have menu items! Atmosphere If you’ve spent any time on Cannery Row in Monterey, then Pacific Wharf Cafe will look familiar to you in terms of style. The restaurant is actually owned and operated by San Fran’s Boudin Bakery, a landmark of the city, dating back to 1849. If you’d like to know more about the bread making process or the history of Boudin Bakery, be sure to take The Bakery Tour, which you’ll find just next door. (Yep — that bread baking smell isn’t piped in! They really really really bake fresh bread for the parks here every day!!! SO GOOD!) Wall Decor Inside, the counter service stop is fairly straightforward in design. Warm wood paneling covers the walls, and exposed duct work echoes the industrial feel of the space. Two queues give way to ordering areas, where cast members take your order from the menu above and the pastry case in front of you. Queue Over the counter, boards display the small menu the old fashioned way (no LCD screens here), and focuses on items that include Boudin’s signature sourdough bread. Be sure to check out the enticing bread display between the identical menu boards. Ordering Area On the day that I visited recently, the pastry case was a little underwhelming. But don’t hold that against them. There’s plenty of wonderful stuff here. Pastry Case Once your order is assembled, you’ll pick it up from the area just to the side of the register. Pick Up Area There’s no seating inside Pacific Wharf Cafe, but you should be able to find a spot at the shared outdoor seating area just outside, or take a seat at the lovely waterside tables (there are about four of them) right next to the restaurant exit. Outdoor Seating During this visit, there were some new items to try and some old favorites to enjoy. Let’s check ‘em out. Eats Pacific Wharf Cafe is one of several counter service stops in this part of Disney California Adventure. (Others include The Lucky Fortune Cookery and Cocina Cucomonga Mexican Grill.) As a result, you won’t find a huge menu. But that’s okay, because everything they do offer is delicious. Options range from Soups and Salads served in Sourdough Bread Bowls, to Sandwiches. While they aren’t on the menu by name, there are also some delicious sweet options. There are some standard Kids’ Meals Offerings and a Toddler Meal option as well. Menu — Click to Enlarge I always like to check out the seasonal soup while I’m here, especially since one of my favorites, the Santa Rosa Corn Chowder, wasn’t an option during this visit. Seasonal Soup Sign We soon made our selections and headed outside to enjoy them. Our Lunch! Turkey Pesto Club and Loaded Baked Potato Soup in a Sourdough Bread Bowl First up — the Turkey Pesto Club Sandwich. The substantial sammie comes with a side of Lay’s Potato Chips. Turkey Pesto Club This sandwich looks guuuuuuuuud. Sliced Turkey is topped with Bacon, Swiss Cheese, creamy Pesto Aioli, Lettuce, and Tomato, and it’s served on a Boudin Sourdough Baguette, baked fresh right on the premises. You know how bread isn’t usually a big deal on a sandwich? Not so here. Every single component brought something to the party. It was delicious and fresh, and we’d definitely get it again. Turkey Pesto Club — Up Close I chose to indulge in the seasonal soup, Loaded Baked Potato. (Um…of course I did!) Loaded Baked Potato Soup in a Sourdough Bread Bowl Cheesy, creamy, and rich, it was everything that I wanted it to be. And how great is it that I can eat the bowl too? Loaded Baked Potato Soup — Up Close I have a bonus for you, too! PWC happens to be home to an amazing Secret Menu Item — Macaroni and Cheese in a Sourdough Bread Bowl! Yep! — that’s a TON of Cheesy Pasta, served in a bowl made of Bread. Because you NEED your energy. Secret Disneyland Menu Item: Macaroni and Cheese in a Sourdough Bread Bowl! Pacific Wharf also puts their bread game to good use in the dessert department with Bread Pudding. The flavors change with the seasons, so there’s always something new to look forward to. While we were there, I enjoyed a Caramel Apple version, with a little surprise tucked into the middle. Seasonal Bread Pudding — Apple and Cream Cheese Pudding I’ve tasted lots of the different bread puddings that PCW has offered. Sometimes they’re a little on the dry side, but overall, I always enjoy them. This particular version had Apples mingled throughout the bread mixture which lent a great flavor and texture contrast. We didn’t find it to be dry at all. I appreciated the Caramel and Whipped Cream too. You know how I feel about it: the more sauce, the better! Though I think next time I’ll ask for them to drizzle the sauce on top as well. They’ve done that in the past and I’ve enjoyed it even more. Seasonal Bread Pudding — Apple and Cream Cheese Pudding — Up Close But inside, you come to the real reason for the extra moist pudding — a Cheese Filling! At least I think that’s what it was?!? No idea, but no matter what it was, it was Le Sigh. Seasonal Bread Pudding — Apple and Cream Cheese Pudding — Inside The sweet + rich + creamy cheese tanginess yielded prettymuch the perfect bread pudding. Overall You know that I am a huge fan of Disneyland food, and I think they do an especially terrific job with counter service options. And PWC is right up there with the best of them. Such a simple menu, but how can you go wrong with fresh-baked sourdough and amazing soups?!? Add in the killer bread pudding, and I’m sold. If you find yourself in Disney California Adventure hungry, with no plans, head to Pacific Wharf Cafe to grab a quick lunch or dinner. I think you’ll be pleased. Now, I’d love to hear your opinion! Is Pacific Wharf Cafe one of your favorite counter service stops when you’re in Disneyland? Leave a comment and let us know! In the words of Disney Parks Moms Panelist Todd, taking a vacation to Walt Disney World gives dads a chance to be the hero of the family! A hero? Have you dads ever thought of yourselves as heroes when it comes to planning a trip? Well, Todd and Ricardo have, and they are sharing some of their most successful “dad tips” to help you plan your next magical getaway and be the hero in your family! “If they think you are a hero, be prepared to play the part. Go overboard, let yourself have fun and show the kids you’re having a great time. Whenever I go with my family I dress the part (Mickey shirt, backpack, ultra organized FUN MACHINE), volunteer for shows and experiences as kids love this,” Todd said. “Show them a little of what dad would have been like as a kid.” However, before dad slips into full kid mode upon his arrival to the parks, plan your vacation and make it a family affair, according to Ricardo. “Plan ahead and involve the entire family when it comes to important decisions such as resorts, restaurants and FastPass+ reservations,” he said. “I’ve been taking my family to Walt Disney World Resort for many years and we plan ahead … together.” While planning, why not suggest a date night to your significant other? Todd highly recommends a special evening and reminds parents there is no need to worry about what to do with the children, thanks to Disney’s Children’s Activity Centers. “The centers are fantastic,” explained Todd. “My kids immediately asked to go again when we picked them up! Plan a wonderful evening for that someone special and show them Disney magic is not defined by age. Some of my suggestions include adult meals, carriage rides and even a spa treatment, which happens to be my wife’s favorite.” Remember a Disney day can be a long day, especially for little ones. Ricardo reminds families to know their limits and remember to take breaks when needed. This might even include something as easy as a ride on the monorail, suggest Ricardo. “Disney Dad makes tough decisions,” said Todd “I’ve made decisions to skip rides, leave theme parks, and stay in rooms because these tough decisions avoided potential meltdowns. Know everyone’s limits and comply.” But remember Disney Dad can also be a super fun dad, or perhaps even a “dorky dad.” “Walt Disney World is the number one place in the world where dorky dads are revered for their dorkiness,” explained Todd. “I’ve even worn a quarter back wristband to the parks that usually carries football plays, but for the trip it had our plans for the day written out. I got so many unsolicited compliments from dads about how awesome it was!” “It’s definitely the place to bring out the kid in you,” said Ricardo. “Get a pair of ears or a silly t-shirt. Your kids will love it and so will you.” Ricardo and Todd both can’t stress enough to be in the moment when you are with your family at Walt Disney World. Forget about work and simply enjoy the precious time spent with loved ones. As Todd says, “work may have paid for the trip, but your job on vacation is to at least pretend it did not come along on the trip.” “One thing I love to do on every trip is to take a step back and simply watch my family enjoy the moment,” said Ricardo. “Remember you are on vacation and while a plan for each day is a good idea, follow it loosely so that everyone enjoys themselves.” “Hold hands, carry kids on shoulders, snuggle for fireworks and parades,” recommends Todd. “My favorite Walt Disney World picture is my daughter grasping me around my neck with Wishes Nighttime Spectacular taking place behind us.” So dads as you and your family plan your next Walt Disney World vacation, Todd encourages you to remember family first, plans second and dad third. “This may seem unfair to dad until you realize: dad is a major part of all of these items.” For more dad tips or to ask questions about planning your upcoming Disney vacation, be sure to visit the Disney Parks Moms Panel for a personalized response from our knowledgeable panel. Rapunzel and Little Mermaid Merchandise Cart Rapunzel Hats A display of dresses available for purchase is also present. (I can my fellow parents now — “Thanks a LOT, Disney.” ;-D) Princess Wear Moving into the main dining area, the atmosphere remains nearly the same as it is for dinner with a couple of exceptions that we’ll mention in a moment. Entering the dining room Brick walls, a mix of earthy and deep colors, and plentiful tables (with a few rounded booths for larger parties) set the stage. Dining Area Rounded Booth The exhibition kitchen remains the room’s focal point. Exhibition Kitchen Exhibition Kitchen We’re cutting the tour a little short (remember, you can see the entire restaurant here) to focus on how the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast differs from dinner at Trattoria. First, the music playing throughout the restaurant really helps to set the mood, as fans of the The Little Mermaid and Rapunzel will recognize the scores of the films setting the tone (no pun intended). Second, as you approach your table you’ll notice something propped in the center. Table Setting It’s the Bon Voyage Adventure Journal. Bon Voyage Adventure Journal Bon Voyage Adventure Journal Guests are encouraged to write about the Disney World adventures they’re anticipating for the rest of their trip in this keepsake, or record memories they’ve already made during their vacation (notice all four parks represented in the picture). Bon Voyage Adventure Journal And hence, the “Bon Voyage” theme! The breakfast is ultimately meant to be a great start to the “Best! Day! EVER!!” before sending you off into the Adventure that will be the rest of your day in Disney World! Once we sat down, our server also presented us with autograph cards. Autograph Card Sometimes an autograph card indicates that the characters themselves will not be signing autographs, but that’s not the case at the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast. See? Flynn Rider signing autographs Oh, what’s that? You just got your very first glimpse of FLYNN RIDER?! Well, it won’t be the last… Let’s say “Hello” to our friends! Characters While the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast celebrates two of Disney’s most beloved couples — Rapunzel and Flynn from Tangled, and Ariel and Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid — guests have the chance to meet each character one by one, as they are announced individually and come to greet each table in kind. Allow me to introduce (in order of appearance at the meal)… Flynn Rider!! Flynn Rider And the lovely Rapunzel! Rapunzel Prince Eric is next, dashing in his royal wear! Prince Eric And, finally, we’re joined by the Little Mermaid herself, Ariel. Ariel Even though each character visits each table individually, you know how it is with lovebirds… sometimes they just can’t resist stealing a glance or smile at each other now and then. Rapunzel and Flynn Rider Again, autograph books are welcome, and photos with the characters are encouraged! And keep in mind that Rapunzel, in particular, will be curious to learn about YOUR dreams, so be sure your little one is ready to share. Flynn might even give you a card so you (or your wee little Prince or Princess) can note your dreams to share with Rapunzel when she comes along next. “My Dream” Card I thought this was a nice touch to help prepare little ones who may be a little shy or even starstruck when Rapunzel comes by. (Not that I would know anything about being starstruck by Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. Purely a guess on my part ;D .) And from what I saw she — along with all the other characters in attendance — was great at focusing on the little ones and drawing them into conversation. Rapunzel speaking to a young guest That said, my adult friend and I didn’t feel out of place, even though we had nary a kiddo with us. Prince Eric chatting with guests Once the whole gang is assembled, it’s time for something of a Disney Character Breakfast tradition: the Napkin Parade! Ariel leads this one, leading children — and, really, any guest who cares to join — in a jaunt around the restaurant, with the waving of napkins completing the scene. Ariel Our server — who was truly attentive, kind, and enthusiastic about this new breakfast opportunity at Trattoria — even gave us a little lesson on some themed napkin folding (i.e., how to make shapes of a clamshell and fish, to fit in with life Under the Sea). Napkin Folding Demo Oh, and one more thing before we move on, lest you think I forgot… OF COURSE I didn’t. I KNEW you would want to see it. So, here it is… The Smolder THE SMOLDER. And now for some more hot stuff ! Here comes breakfast! Eats The Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast offers a menu of prix fixe selections. To start, guests receive their choice of Fresh Fruit or a Mixed Berry Parfait, along with a variety of Pastries for the table to share. Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast Starters Adults may also add a morning Mimosa, Peach Bellini, Caprese Bloody Mary, or a specialty coffee for an extra charge. Standard non-alcoholic beverages such as milk and juice are included, though oddly we were accidentally charged for our orange juice. We THINK it’s an accident, anyway. We didn’t notice it until after we’d left the restaurant. But just an FYI to check your bill thoroughly! Beverage Menu By the way, children can order the Little Mermaid or Buzz Lightyear Punch that’s available in many locations throughout Disney World. It’s fairly prominent, so you may have already seen the Little Mermaid Clip-on Light that comes with the punch. Little Mermaid Clip-on Light Though the other Clip-on option is typically Buzz Lightyear, it’s this little glowing Pascal at the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast! Pascal Clip-on Light Finally, adults may select from seven entrée choices: King Triton’s Shipwreck al Forno, the Golden Frittata, Tangled Eggs, Two Eggs Poached Under Water, the Tower of Pancakes, the Royale Breakfast, and Swimmers Delight. Entree Menu Meanwhile, kiddos have their own options to choose from: Pancakes, a Mickey Waffle, or the Little Royal Breakfast (traditional eggs, bacon, and toast). A note: it’s pretty nice having a Character Breakfast served to the table, as you don’t run the risk of missing a character’s visit as you might at a buffet. Okay, now that you’ve seen the choices, let’s dive in. The starter choices share a couple of things in common. In both cases, the ingredients are fairly basic. The Fruit Salad, for instance, is simply a very small bowl of pineapple, melon, and mixed berries. Fruit Salad But, it has a bit of added charm with the small cookie crown covered in edible glitter. Crown Cookie Likewise, the Berry, Yogurt, and Granola Parfait (though I do have to give a nod to the chocolatey, house-made mini granola bar), is also a fairly standard breakfast appetizer. Berry, Yogurt, and Granola Parfait House-made Granola Bar Still, you’ll see a glittering Sebastian cookie peeking out of the top. Sebastian Cookie Additionally, the table receives a selection of Pastries to share. Pastry assortment The assortment is presented in a frying pan, which I’m sure Flynn is relieved to see in use as a serving device (as opposed to Rapunzel’s weapon of choice). Pastry assortment I’m sure you’ve already noticed that these are not your run of the mill muffins and danish pastries. The items are wonderfully themed to the character experience, starting with the Sun Cookie, which perfectly resembles Rapunzel’s paintings. Rapunzel Sun Cookie This crunchy cookie brings together buttery pastry layers, powdered sugar, and a hint of almond flavor that tastes as good as it looks. Another signature item among the assortment is the rich, chocolate-filled Braided Bread – another nod to Rapunzel and her golden locks. Braided Bread The Clamshell Pastry, in honor of The Little Mermaid, features a raspberry filling. Clamshell Pastry Raspberry Filling And though the muffin sporting The Little Mermaid’s jewel tones definitely has a unique appearance, it’s actually a simple and moist vanilla muffin. Clamshell and Vanilla Muffin I have to admit, I was a little surprised when we entered the restaurant and didn’t see any extra decorations and such for this particular meal. As it turns out, the food itself is so well themed that it plays its own major role in creating the atmosphere, with one little surprise after another. I know, we usually don’t spend this much time on starters. But can you blame me? Okay, onto the main courses! My friend and I went with one sweet, and one savory entree. The Tower of Pancakes, served with a side of Bacon, is our sweet option. Tower of Pancakes and Bacon This stack of buttermilk pancakes is layered with a seasonal fruit compote (strawberry, on our visit), and admittedly the photo above is not the best angle, but I wanted to give you a sense of the plating. This close-up on the Tower gives a better idea. Tower of Pancakes And, yes, that is another Rapunzel-style sun in powdered sugar that you spy on top . Rapunzel’s Sun No maple syrup of any kind is required for this big pile of fluffy pancakes, as the compote provides plenty of sweetness, but helps to avoid too much of a sugar rush as compared to traditional syrup. I would have honestly liked more bacon on the side — not only because “more bacon” is always a no-brainer , but I really do think a bit more savory would’ve helped to balance all the sweetness between the pancakes on top of all the pastries. And while we’re on the topic of savory… King Triton’s Shipwreck al Forno King Triton’s Shipwreck al Forno is a HUGE calzone stuffed with soppressata (an Italian salami), bacon, sausage, and cheeses served atop an Italian Sunday Gravy. When it is presented at your table, King Triton’s Trident Scepter is holding this enormous pile of food together. King Triton’s Scepter Alas, your server removes it upon arrival. Cool touch while it lasts, though! Anyway, while the inclusion of bacon is probably what lands this item on a breakfast list, the emphasis is definitely on the cheese, sausage, golden-brown crust, and flavorful tomato sauce. King Triton’s Shipwreck al Forno Which makes it pretty much like eating pizza for breakfast. Which makes it pretty much awesome. King Triton’s Shipwreck al Forno I don’t care what time of day it is, this just works. I also like the fact that the Shipwreck gives morning guests the chance to enjoy some of the Trattoria’s Italian fare. My friend and I agreed this is easily an all-day, everyday, thankyouverymuch kind of dish, and neither of us could get enough of it. (Well, technically speaking we could because it’s crazy filling, so we did take home some leftovers. So that’s tonight’s dinner. Or tomorrow’s breakfast. Either way… Hooray!). Not a bad start to the “Best! Day! EVER!!!” Overall A few notes before we say “Bon Voyage” to you: the fixed price for the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast is $34 for adults and $20 for children ages 3-9, or 1 Table Service Credit on the Disney Dining Plan. When coordinating a visit to the breakfast with your park touring plans, it’s handy to know that Trattoria al Forno is within easy walking distance to Epcot from its location on the Boardwalk (boat transportation to the park is also provided). For those of you staying at or around the BoardWalk, we were told that Trattoria’s outdoor tables will be reserved for those who’d like to dine there for breakfast but aren’t interested in character interaction. The menu will be the same, though. Which brings me to my biggest CON when it comes to this new addition to Trattoria al Forno: with the Bon Voyage Character Breakfast, we’ve lost one of my favorite breakfast items on property — the waffles with mascarpone cheese. A holdover from Kouzzina, this gorgeous dish was amazing. So I bid it farewell with sorrow in my heart. But I’m glad that there are some indulgent dishes replacing it. I think the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast is a terrific addition to Trattoria al Forno, the Boardwalk, and Disney Character Meals in general. All the elements are there: good interaction with fun, unique characters (you can’t catch Flynn Rider or Prince Eric just anywhere) in a nice setting with a menu that has clearly had a lot of thought put into it. We learned from our server that the hope is to provide a terrific start to a day full of Disney adventure, and I’d have to say, I think the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast succeeds in meeting that goal. Members Enjoy Waived Fees and Last-Minute Getaways with RCI
Disney4me posted a topic in Disney Blogs
Seeing the world through exchanges with our friends at RCI is, for many Disney Vacation Club Members, an important part of the magic of Membership. With thousands of other vacation options in destinations around the world, it’s an opportunity to expand, not only Members’ vacation horizons, but even the life of their Vacation Points – thanks to an option that allows Members to deposit unused Vacation Points for future use through RCI. This year promises to see more Members than ever enjoying RCI exchanges, taking advantage of special offers presented as part of Membership Magic in 2017. First, as announced earlier this year, the popular offer to waive the traditional $95 transaction fee is being extended for new RCI reservations booked in 2017, regardless of travel date. And, for a limited time, RCI will help Member families enjoy last-minute getaways by reducing point values (by 30 percent or more) for reservations made within 30 days of travel (based on availability). Members may begin booking these reduced-point, last-minute reservations on April 4 (a reservation made on April 4 could include a check-in date as late as May 4), with June 30 scheduled to be the last day to make such reservations (and July 29 being the latest eligible check-in date). Both nightly and weekly reservations are available through this special offer, which includes all eligible RCI resorts with the exception of those in The Registry Collection. To learn more, call Member Services or search resort availability and point values online at disneyvacationclub.com (Plan Vacations, Points & Destinations, World Collection). You should not purchase or add on a real estate interest in a Disney Vacation Club Resort in reliance upon the continued availability or renewal or extension of these offers. These offers may only be available to Members at various times and may or may not be renewed or extended. Vacation destinations offered through exchange opportunities may be modified or withdrawn at any time without notice. Members receive the full terms and conditions of this program, including applicable fees and restrictions, in the “RCI® Disclosure Guide”.
