At a panel discussion today at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando entitled Star Wars and Disney Parks: A Galaxy in the Making, creative minds from Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Imagineering discussed their unique partnership and shared additional details about the new galactic lands being created at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. Everyone in the room got to experience the excitement and commitment this team is bringing to this project. Here’s an exclusive look at a video shared at today’s event which gives some insight into this incredible collaboration. The team shared exciting new details about the story behind this mysterious destination somewhere on the Outer Rim — lying on the edge of the Unknown Regions. The remote village was once a busy crossroads along the old sub-lightspeed trade routes, but the prominence of the outpost has been bypassed with the rise of hyperspace travel. Now home to those who prefer less attention, it has become a thriving port for smugglers, rogue traders and adventurers traveling between the frontier and uncharted space. It’s also a convenient safe-haven for others intent on avoiding the expanding reach of the First Order. Unusual characters from across the galaxy have landed here, preferring the “no questions asked” environment as well as easy access to exotic supplies and an abundant supply of ready rogues looking to join a crew for their next adventure. As Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced last month, our Star Wars-themed lands are scheduled to open in 2019. There will be more exciting updates to share as work progresses on each of these lands. Keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for the latest. View the full article

Howdy, pard’ners! We’re traveling back to Disneyland’s Frontierland for a trifecta of favorites at the Stage Door Cafe! Stage Door Cafe sign Seriously, this simple little spot holds more Disneyland food legends than you can shake a stick at. It’s pretty much a must-visit every time I’m in Disneyland. (I say that a lot, don’t I? ;-D) Let’s take a quick look around. Atmosphere And I do mean quick, because Stage Door Cafe is a pretty darn tiny counter service spot tucked around the corner from The Golden Horseshoe. Still, it’s got some cool old-timey details outside, like wrought iron on the doors and lanterns overhead. Stage Door Cafe Once you step inside, you’ll discover that the ordering area is TINY, especially considering the popularity of the place. Stage Door Cafe Ordering Area Even so, you’ve still got a few details to take in. More lanterns. Lots of wood. Stained glass. You know the drill. It’s all… Frontier-sy. And theatrical! What with being right next door to the Horseshoe, where real, live performances take place throughout the day. It IS the stage door after all. (The tragedy and comedy masks just so happen to capture my before-funnel-cake and AFTER-funnel-cake emotions perfectly.) Stage Door Cafe Decor (and menu) They’re hanging right over the list of options “For Yer Sweet Tooth” and to “Wet Yer Whistle.” But even though the menu here is small, there IS more to see. Stage Door Cafe Registers So step right up, cowpoke. Eats Like I said, the menu is small. Stage Door Cafe Menu But with nothing but classics on the list — Fish & Chips, Chicken Breast Nuggets, Hand-dipped Corn Dogs, and Funnel Cakes — it’s everything it needs to be. Stage Door Cafe Inside Menu (Click to Enlarge) Now, I do consider Chicken Breast Nuggets to be among the classics, and it’s worth noting that Stage Door Cafe offers Dipping Sauces with them (!!!): Ranch, Honey Mustard, BBQ, Marinara, or Buffalo Hot Sauce. You can get these over at Horseshoe, too. Here’s what they look like: Nuggets with Sauce Uncovered But on this visit I opted for the Fish and Chips. Stage Door Cafe Fish and Chips Always a solid purchase if you’re hankerin’ for something from the sea. The narrow strips offer a good crunch from the batter, and the fish itself is pleasingly flakey. They’re really served with the regular ol’ thin French Fries as opposed to proper thick-cut chips, but they do the trick. Next up, we snagged a Corn Dog. Because when you’re in Disneyland, you simply must. In this case, it really doesn’t matter whether you grab yours from the Little Red Wagon, Corn Dog Castle or right here at the Stage Door Cafe. All you need to know is you’re getting an authentic Disneyland Corn Dog, which is hand-dipped. Stage Door Cafe Corn Dog And that makes all the difference. Check out that thick, sweet-savory golden fried batter surrounding the hot dog. (Nobody does cornbread…or corn dogs…like Disneyland.) Stage Door Cafe Corn Dog Interior Now, technically you can find Hand-dipped Corn Dogs in Disney World, too, thanks to the Fantasy Fare Food Truck, which is most often found in Exposition Park in Disney Springs. But, in my honest opinion, it still doesn’t quite compete with the Disneyland original. Speaking of dishes where Disneyland holds a slight edge over Disney World… let’s talk Funnel Cakes. In this case, the House-Made Funnel Cake with Strawberry Topping. Stage Door Cafe Funnel Cake with Strawberry Topping Disneyland tends to step outside the box a little more with their funnel cakes. For a spell, Hungry Bear Restaurant had that ridiculous (and by ridiculous, I mean awesome) Churro Funnel Cake, and if you act super-fast you might still be able to grab the Blueberry Lemon Funnel Cake. And right here at Stage Door you can sometimes catch the Holiday Funnel Cake… like, during the holidays, for instance . But even if you’ve simply got the regular options available (which here also include chocolate brownie toppings or simply powdered sugar), just look. Stage Door Cafe Funnel Cake with Strawberry Topping Basically, before the soft-yet-crispy, golden funnel cake is bathed in berry sauce, it’s dusted with powdered sugar. Finally, it’s topped with actual strawberries. All great. But, seriously. That Whipped Cream Mickey. Stage Door Cafe Funnel Cake Mickey I die. By the way, a few pre-packaged treats are also available. (Even though we’re always going to recommend the Funnel Cakes.) Stage Door Cafe Packaged Treats And pssst... don’t forget that Stage Door Cafe has a Secret Menu Item, too! Overall Stage Door Cafe may not garner the same headlines as other Counter Service spots in Disneyland, but it remains a perennial favorite for one blissfully obvious reason: the food is awesome. Whether you order one of your favorites or, hey, one of each , I don’t think you’ll regret you stop at the Stage Door Cafe! What would you order on your visit to Stage Door Cafe? This week, some of the most compelling images we shared on the Disney Parks Blog celebrate a fun Easter tradition – painted Easter eggs. Each year, the pastry team at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa spend months designing, molding, carving, sculpting and painting Easter eggs for the resort’s lobby display. The theme of each egg is inspired by a different Disney character or film – some are even nods to favorite Disney attractions or moments in our entertainment history. For a look at this year’s amazing confectionary creations, click through the Instagram gallery above. View the full article

It’s a whole new wilderness at my favorite Disney Resort, where the latest addition to the Disney Vacation Club neighborhood is set to welcome Members home on July 17. Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge will celebrate today’s life in the Pacific Northwest with a clean look inspired by the resourcefulness of Westerners who turned relics of an abandoned railroad into contemporary communities that continue to evolve today. This sleek new development – which will become the second Disney Vacation Club property at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge – adds another layer of storytelling to a rustically elegant destination that’ll be home to three unique Resorts: Disney’s Wilderness Lodge itself (which opened in 1994), Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge (which welcomed its first Disney Vacation Club Members home in 2000) and, beginning this summer, Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. These three distinctive Resorts tell equally distinctive stories about the creation, evolution or re-imagination of the Transcontinental Railroad, with each Resort transporting Members and guests to a different period of time. To help you navigate this trio of trails through American history, we’ve put together this fun little video that gives you the lay of the land and breaks down the thematic timeline. Not since Tomorrowland put us only steps away from Frontierland has time traveling been this easy. (And now, a word from our lawyer friends: Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is currently under construction, scheduled opening July, 2017. Not offered in all states.) At the Disneyland Resort, there is more to our landscape design than good looks. With Southern California’s seemingly endless days of beautiful weather, we experience less rainfall than other parts of the country. That’s why we’re always on the lookout for new ways to conserve water. Our Horticulture team, with the help of Walt Disney Imagineering, designs landscapes that not only fit the theme of the area they will be planted in, but also include water-savvy plants. These plants have leaves that are small, waxy, thick, silvery or hairy to minimize water loss. Additionally, they are wide or deeply rooted to maximize water uptake. Download and view the guide to Water-Savvy Plants at the Disneyland Resort to learn where you can see some of these plants on your next visit, and see tips from our Horticulture cast members on how to add some of the foliage to your home garden! “Happily Ever After,” the new nighttime fireworks spectacular, is set to debut at Magic Kingdom Park on May 12. The show will take guests on an emotional journey as favorite Disney characters set out to pursue their dreams, encounter obstacles (and villains!) to ultimately prevail and find their “happily ever afters.” The show also encourages guests to pursue their own dreams and never give up. While the “story” of the show is the most important part of “Happily Ever After,” how that story is told and choosing the right tools to tell it are essential in creating an unforgettable guest offering. One tool in particular that Disney Parks Live Entertainment is excited to employ in “Happily Ever After” is the latest in projection mapping technology. The team first used projection mapping in 2010 with the launch of “The Magic, The Memories & You,” a nighttime show that combined guest-submitted photos with different colorful layouts that were projected onto Cinderella Castle. After more advancements were made in the field of projection mapping, a new show, “Celebrate the Magic,” debuted in 2012. Because of its successful use at the Walt Disney World Resort, the use of projection mapping technology then expanded to be used as an entertainment tool at Disney Parks around the world. Today, you can find projections enhancing entertainment must-see shows like “Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular” and the seasonal “Jingle Bell: Jingle BAM!” show. According to Show Director James Silson, projections are one of many invaluable storytelling tools used in “Happily Ever After,” in addition to new hand-drawn animation, an original score and the latest in fireworks, lasers and pyrotechnics. “With projection mapping technology, you can create an immersive environment for guests, taking them inside the films of Disney,” he said. “It enables us to flood the palate and give our guests an opportunity to experience many of our characters’ worlds in the same show.” Those characters and film settings will run the gamut from classic Disney films, to more recent ones, like “Moana,” “Zootopia” and “Big Hero 6.” To create the most technologically advanced projections for Cinderella Castle, Disney Parks Live Entertainment partnered with experts in the field to bring the show to life. According to Art Director Ryan Kravetz, working with Cinderella Castle as a canvas for these projections has been a dream-come-true project. “It’s not paper, it’s not a cell. The physical structure of this castle as our starting point is a really powerful medium to be using.” For a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of “Happily Ever After” projection mapping, check out the video above.
