In our Disney Doodles series, our Disney artists take turns imaging what different Disney characters would do or see first if they had the chance to visit a Disney Park. In today’s Doodle, artist Ashley Taylor imagines what Georgette from the 1988 film “Oliver & Company” would do if she had the chance to visit the Walt Disney World Resort. What’s your favorite winter sport? Mine is curling. While it lacks the gracefulness of ice skating or the speed of skiing, it’s a competition that takes precision, strategy and teamwork. So, imagine my delight when I got to try my hand at a unique version of this sport, known as Bavarian curling, on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise! We all know that Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival is one of the prettiest times to visit Walt Disney World’s second-oldest park. But with the addition of food booths (called Outdoor Kitchens at this festival!), the Festival got delicious, too! The Epcot Flower and Garden Festival Check out the full menus — and tons of food photos — for the 2018 Flower and Garden Food Booths here! This year the Festival runs from February 28 to May 28 — three whole months of loveliness! — and celebrates 25 years! And this year, the Florida Museum of Natural History is launching a totally unique and intriguing beverage: Monarch Milk Stout. And yup, that’s Monarch like the butterfly! The beer is crafted in collaboration with First Magnitude Brewing Co. 3D butterflies celebrate, too! Don’t worry — no butterflies were harmed in the making of this brew. The purpose of the beer is to illuminate the declines of Monarch populations with hope that the partnership with Disney will raise awareness on an international level. The ultimate goal, according to Jaret Daniels, the director the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, is to promote habitat restoration and scientific research into this iconic butterfly. Butterfly at Flower and Garden Festival Monarch Milk Stout will be served exclusively at the “Florida Fresh Outdoor Kitchen” food booth, and percentages of the sale of the beer will go to support at-risk butterfly conservation right there in Florida. Our Disney Parks Moms Panel Awards continue, and this week the spotlight shines on Disney Cruise Line. Many of our panelists have sailed the ocean on these magical cruise ships and here are a few of their favorite things: Favorite Broadway Style Show And the award goes to … Disney’s Believe! For the second year in a row, this show has taken the top spot. We think it has to do with the heartwarming story this musical tells about a father and his love for his daughter. Runner-ups in this category included Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic and Tangled: The Musical. Don’t miss out of the brand new “Beauty & the Beast” aboard Disney Dream! The Disney Cruise Line specialists at the Disney Parks Moms Panel recommend arriving early for the show to get the perfect seat. Favorite Adults Only Space The overwhelming choice was a delectable dinner at Palo. This adults only dining spot features Northern Italian cooking with a modern twist. Did you know it is named Palo after the signature long poles used by gondoliers in Venice? Senses Spa and Salon, as well as Serenity Bay at Disney Castaway Cay, were also among the top vote getters for some relaxing adults only time. Favorite Family Fun For many, family time is what a Disney Cruise is all about. And from the results of this vote, it is quite obvious that our panel loves Pirate Night. It was far and away the favorite in this category again this year. Our panelists enjoy the “Pirates IN the Caribbean Deck Party” and getting to dress as their favorite pirate. But, their favorite part is the spectacular fireworks show, the only fireworks show at sea. Arrr matey … it’s a pirate’s life for us! Favorite Youth Club This was a close one, but in the end Disney’s Oceaneer Club came out on top as the favorite place for kiddos. Here, children ages three to 12, meet new friends, participate in interactive experience and get to spend some quality time with some of their favorite Disney friends, while mom and dad enjoy a date night of their own. Now at Disney California Adventure park, guests can welcome the king of Wakanda! For this limited-time experience, Black Panther will arrive in the Hollywood Backlot area of the park flanked by his Royal Guards, the Dora Milaje. Marvel Studios’ record-breaking hit, “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king — and Black Panther — is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Golden Oak Outpost is a great wilderness food stop. Located on the path between Adventureland and Frontierland (and Pecos Bill’s neighbor) in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Golden Oak Outpost features a tiny and frequently-changing menu of mostly fried, delicious grub. Golden Oak Outpost There is outdoor seating here, but it’s right next to a designated smoking area. We’ve seen folks take their Golden Oak Outpost eats and flee to the AC of Pecos Bill’s, which is located right across the walkway. Golden Oak Outpost seating Chicken Nuggets (one of our favorite go-to Disney World eats) are available here, but two other, more intriguing options are now being served. And we grabbed them up since the menu here is so mercurial we’re not sure how long they’ll be around! Golden Oak Outpost Menu The Barbecue Chicarrons are generously seasoned pork cracklings. This is a great grab-and-go option for those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet. Since it’s SO difficult to find low-carb and keto snacks in the parks, this will be a welcome addition I’m sure. Barbecue Chicarrons at Golden Oak Outpost Seriously: if you’re in the mood for a snack with texture and a super-satisfying crunch, these are for you. They’re served freshly fried and hot. So much seasoning on the Chicarrons at Golden Oak Outpost The other, no less awesome option here is Chili Queso Fries. You’d be hard pressed to find a bowl of fries covered in chili and queso that we don’t like, and these are wonderful. The base of waffle fries is the real winner here: crispy and sturdy enough to handle the toppings. Chili Queso Fries at Golden Oak Outpost The white queso is the same you’ll find at Pecos Bill, which we already love (you can’t forget our corn dog nuggets and queso adventure!) Check out the queso! The chili is also good. It’s a ground beef chili and has good flavor. The contrast/marriage between the queso and the chili is spot-on. Oh — and if you’re worried about soggy fries (or you have a picky eater who isn’t havin’ the sauces on top), you can ask for the toppings on the side. Chili Queso Fries at Golden Oak Outpost We’ve had a few readers and followers give us the tip to take these chili queso fries over to Pecos Bill’s to load them up with the toppings bar. You can let your conscience be your guide on that one — especially if you didn’t purchase anything at Pecos Bill’s. Finally, we’re sharing this not-super-new warm Chocolate Chip Cookie, which you can also pick up at Golden Oak Outpost. It’s a standard (read: not boring but actually totally irresistible) Walt Disney World cookie, but the bonus if you get one at the Outpost is that it’s served warm. Golden Oak Outpost Warm Chocolate Chip Cookie And that’s a good thing because those chocolate chunks… they were born to be melty. So good! You can also pick up a refreshing Desert Pear Lemonade Slushy here (review on DFB forthcoming!). Desert Pear Slushy We love to visit the Golden Oak Outpost, and not just because we appreciate a good fried everything when we’re on our way to brave Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It’s official! Disney’s Hollywood Studios will welcome guests to the highly anticipated Toy Story Land starting June 30, 2018! The opening date announcement was made live on “Good Morning America” on Friday, with a Slinky Dog attraction vehicle making its way into the Times Square studio in the early morning hours to be present for the big news. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we made the announcement. This week we also shared a look at what will be the new entrance to Toy Story Mania! Attraction (see image at the top). Once it opens, guests will walk through a new carnival game box to experience Toy Story Mania! Now expanded with a third track, the popular attraction will put even more guests in the action taking aim at 3D objects – using everything from baseballs to cream pies – in a variety of whimsical, fast-paced games. We just learned that Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be opening on June 30 — but in the meantime, we’ve searched out What’s New NOW at Hollywood Studios (and nearby Art of Animation and Pop Century Resorts!). Let’s gooooooo! Disney’s Hollywood Studios Menus and Eats At pop-up bars around the park, guests can order two new seasonal drinks. Baby Blues is comprised of Tito’s Handmade Vodka (SHOUTOUT AUSTIN, TX!), Bacardi Superior Rum, Tanqueray Gin, Blue Curacao, Sweet-and-Sour, and Sprite! And you get a glow cube, of course. Green Screen is Absolut Pears Vodka, Midori, Pineapple Juice, and Sprite (again with a glow cube!). (Anyone else as disturbed as I am on the pricing of these?) Pop Up Bars Seasonal Drinks Over at Trolley Car Cafe, you can pick up this seasonal Red Velvet Cupcake, which is frosted with chocolate frosting and comes garnished with Mickey and Minnie! To make room for this tasty-sounding drink, the Frozen Beso Sol Sangria has been removed. (Yeah, I don’t really know what a steak puff is, either, but upon a google search it seems to be steak in a puff pastry? Anyone out there have experience?) It’s not easy being a Disney Princess, but somehow Disney Legend Paige O’Hara pulls it off without a hitch. As the voice of one Disney’s most iconic characters, O’Hara has pretty much lived the part of Belle from the animated version of Disney’s “Beauty and The Beast” since 1991. And her popularity shows no signs of waning. A celebrated Broadway actress and singer – even before Disney came knocking – O’Hara has pursued other creative outlets along with her “royal” duties in the years since the first film premiered. Lucky for us, she has graciously offered to showcase them for guests at the Epcot International Festival of the Arts. Not only does she act and sing, she is also a fabulous painter, and festival goers can take home some of her beautiful Disney-inspired artwork. The renaissance woman will be signing her artwork at the Disney Fine Art by Collectors Editions Fountain Stage Tent now through the end of the festival at 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. each day. Guests must purchase a piece of her artwork to sign and are limited to two items signed per guest. We caught up with Paige during some down time before her first workshop and she told us about all the fun she’s having with the visual arts. The Epcot International Festival of the Arts runs through Monday, Feb 19. ʻElepaio means Flycatcher Bird. February is Hawaiian Language Month, and I love any reason to celebrate Hawaiian language. This leads me to a special bird found here in Hawai‘i that was known to be one of the most talkative in the forest: the ‘elepaio, or the flycatcher. There are many stories about this bird, but one of the most interesting is that it was once used to help select trees to be made into canoes. The ʻelepaio was very social, and when Hawaiians of old would go into the forest, the happy bird would provide its aloha to those who passed by. This was useful because if an ʻelepaio was on a tree, that meant there were flies and bugs on the tree (it is a fly-catcher, after all) so it would not be a good tree to carve into a canoe. They were makaʻala, or vigilant, since those canoes had to cross great oceans. At KA WAʻA Luʻau, you can learn all about how voyaging canoes journeyed throughout the Pacific with the stars, tides, and winds to guide them to Hawai’i.
