The 2017 Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend presented by MISFIT is right around the corner and runners are packing their bags for the race events all around our world. Earlier this year, we embarked on an exciting hotel-wide renovation at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa at the Disneyland Resort. The most extensive refurbishment since the hotel’s 2001 opening, guest rooms have been completely redesigned with a fresh sense of luxury and the pool deck has been refreshed with beautiful, new hardscapes to reinforce the Arts and Crafts style. The already stunning six-story Grand Hall lobby was recently upgraded with new, stylish furnishings and design elements. Here’s a closer look at some of the details found in the lobby. To complement the existing Arts and Crafts motif, new contemporary designs can be found throughout furniture pieces, upholstery graphics, woodwork and carpeting. Custom tete-a-tete chairs provide interesting design and function, while boldly upholstered sofa and chair pairings offer a comfortable, welcoming setting. Coffee tables feature beautiful inlay woodwork and leather-topped stools showcase hidden Mickey details. The redesigned space is perfect for lounging with family, relaxing with a glass of wine from the Hearthstone Lounge, or simply admiring the lobby’s focal point—the cavernous fireplace and its roaring fire. New hardwood flooring has been installed throughout the lobby, as well as new carpet. Walt Disney Imagineers wanted to keep the same California-poppy-patterned carpet design, but used different materials to make the colors and textures more vivid and dimensional. The carpet’s design was inspired by the textile work of designer William Morris, one of the earliest and most influential proponents of the Arts and Crafts movement. As we head into the holidays, Disney is taking the customization trend and literally turning it on its ears with new seasonal headwear in Disney Parks. Beloved as an iconic Disney vacation souvenir, Mouse Ears are sporting some new looks, ranging from rose gold to pom poms, and interchangeable bows. A lot of thought and attention to detail goes into adding a dash of whimsy to these classic fan favorites. “When designing new styles, we consider several factors including current trends in the marketplace,” says Jeanne Lewis of the Disney Parks Merchandise headwear development team. “We also love to experiment with different colors, fabrics, or features.” The popular rose gold headband is a great example of combining the iconic Minnie Mouse sequined headband with a trendy color to create a fashion forward design. Guests fell in love with the product, which quickly sold out. More rose gold headbands will arrive in November at Disney Parks and stay in stock into next year. Another stylish headwear option arrives in shops at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts beginning October 21. With the interchangeable bow collection, guests can mix and match bows resembling favorite Disney characters on a specially designed headband. First unveiled at the D23 Expo in July, the interchangeable bow collection offers 10 different character-themed bows. Guests can personalize their headbands to match their moods or outfits. Finally, to top this all off, three new holiday-themed headbands will arriving soon in Disney Parks. With festive colors, the headbands are merry and bright. In a fun twist, one of the headbands has fuzzy red pom pom ears. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Flame Tree Barbecue is cooking up Baked Mac and Cheese with Pulled Pork, topped with coleslaw and onion rings. In addition, pickle lovers will be excited to learn that the popular Kosher Pickle, currently offered at Liberty Square Market in Magic Kingdom Park, has arrived at the Harambe Fruit Market in Africa! If you’re still craving some barbecue after your safari, then try out the pizza of the month at Pinnochio Village Haus in Magic Kingdom Park! The BBQ Chicken Pizza is made with barbecue sweet sauce and topped with sweet onions and roasted chicken. You’ll have until the end of October to partake in this flavorful flatbread! On the hunt for a quick snack? It’s just a short stroll over to Gaston’s Tavern to try out the new Cheese Platter. This platter includes a variety of fruits and cheeses that guests of all ages can enjoy! And right next door at Prince Eric’s Village Market, where you can find a 10-oz pretzel served with delicious beer cheese sauce. Batter up! The new Hot Dog of the Month is here for October at Casey’s Corner on Main Street, U.S.A. The Octoberfest Dog features a beer-braised bratwurst on a pretzel roll, topped with caramelized onions and whole grain mustard. Be sure to stop by and try this new offering before it finishes its home-run at the end of October. Say “Aloha” to the Seven Seas Samoan, a new addition to the breakfast menu at Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. These appetizing poached eggs come with citrus hollandaise sauce on pulled pork and turkey hash, with mustard greens and tomatoes tossed in a citrus vinaigrette. More of a Best “Sips,” over at Disney Springs, these new Wine Slushies at Amorette’s Patisserie are sure to grab the attention of wine aficionados everywhere! Choose from one of two flavors, Strawberry Shiraz and Mango Moscato, or venture for a third option that’s not on the menu and ask the cast member at the counter to swirl the two flavors together! Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Fairfax Fare is now offering a 7-Layer Rice Bowl! This bowl comes filled to the brim with grilled chicken served over cilantro rice, black beans, roasted corn medley, pico de gallo and sour cream. The dish is topped off with cheddar cheese and accompanied by warm tortillas. If you’re hanging out on Sunset Boulevard, come on down and try out this delicious Latin-inspired specialty! At Disneyland Resort, there’s a brand-new item brewing just in time for Halloween! Stop by Carthay Circle Restaurant at Disney California Adventure park, if you dare, to try the all-new Witch’s Fingers. The upcoming Ale & Compass Restaurant at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort is opening on November 26, 2017! ©Disney At least, that’s according to the current status on the Disney World website, which displays November 26th as the first date you’re able to make an Advance Dining Reservation for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner at this spot. This location will be the flagship offering of the new Ale & Compass dining concept for the Deluxe Resort. Disney World website screenshot The Ale & Compass Lounge will reopen from its current refurbishment and will likewise join The Market at Ale & Compass to complete the concept. So… wanna know what you’ll be eating at this “gastropub-inspired restaurant” focused on New England comfort food ? Let’s take a peek at those menus!! Breakfast Menu Before we begin, though, a word… on the day of publishing this post, the Disney World website was encountering a few technical difficulties. So, you’ll see a few spots on the menu with blanks where the item name should be. But we hopped on it anyway to show you — for starters — what’s for BREAKFAST, where Salted Caramel-Apple French Toast and a Smoked Trout Spread make for some unique offerings. Disney World website screenshot The almost-complete Breakfast Cocktail menu lists a couple of Bloody Marys, including one with a Lobster Claw for garnish. And the other features “Yacht Club Vodka.” Disney World website screenshot And here are the morning eats for the kiddos! And a Grilled Plant-based “Bacon Cheeseburger” is an option for our vegetarian (and possibly vegan) friends. As the 2017-18 NBA season tips off, we want to give you a first look at the new NBA Experience at Walt Disney World Resort coming to Disney Springs. Inspired by the modern architecture of new NBA arenas around the country, the building design exudes the same spirit and energizing impact, while creating an unmistakable and entertaining connection to the NBA in a way that only Disney can. It’s one of several ways Disney Springs is still growing and adding new experiences to delight and entertain our Guests. “We are inspired by the design of the new building and the energy that it will bring to the West Side of Disney Springs,” said Senior Vice President of Disney Springs and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Maribeth Bisienere. The state-of-the-art space will include interactive games and competitions, immersive experiences, a retail store and an adjacent restaurant. Now at Disney California Adventure park, Plaza de la Familia, A Celebration of “Coco” and the Everlasting Bonds of Family, is an immersive celebration that includes storytelling, live entertainment with folklórico dancers and mariachi musicians, interactive experiences and a delicious new menu of Mexican dishes. Plaza de la Familia festivities are inspired by the tradition of Día de los Muertos, which celebrates loved ones who have passed and also honors the bonds of family. The Swan and Dolphin Food and Wine Classic has become a must-do food event in Orlando over the past few years. In its eighth year in 2017, the Epcot-area resorts’ festivities include innovative dishes from renowned chefs, lots of spectacular wine offerings, and a variety of informative seminars. Ticket holders for the event will enjoy the activities on Friday, October 27, and/or Saturday, October 28, 2017, from 5:30PM to 9PM. As in the past, there are several ticket options, which you can find on the event website. The Causeway Ticket provides unlimited access to food and drinks along the Causeway between the two resorts. The Causeway Ticket and Beer Garden ticket allows access to the unlimited Causeway offerings as well as the Beer Garden. There are also a la carte tickets, tickets for seminars, and a Sunday Bubbles Brunch. This year there are eleven educational seminars planned, covering topics from sake to pasta making. The Party is in Full Swing Upon arriving at the Food and Wine Classic, you’ll need to check in to receive your menu book, plate, and glass. You’ll use these to access unlimited food and wine offerings. The Set Up — Plate, Glass, Menu — GO! The glass is branded for the event and plastic, which is ideal for hours of strolling between stations. Souvenir Wine Glass for Tasting All. The. Wines. And if you do need a break from the eats and drinks (or simply find a wine you absolutely need to have!), there is also branded merchandise and bottles of wine for purchase in the merch shop. Wine for Sale By the Bottle T-Shirts and More New for 2017 The Grand Tasting Experience is a brand new seminar highlighting northern Italy’s unique Nebbiolo grape and hosted by Master Sommelier Matthew Citriglia. Citriglia is one of only 149 mast sommeliers in the Americas, and he’ll bring rare vintages to share with the crowd. Bubbles Lounge is a new area focusing on sparkling beverages (champagne and sparkling wine) inspired by Lawrence Welk. Guests attending the Classic will receive a special entrance ticket upon check-in and are invited to enjoy the secluded and fantastically designed space. Brand new for 2017 is a seminar called Riesling, So Sweet & So Dry. This seminar will be hosted by certified sommelier and showcase the versatility of the Riesling grape. Seminars The Swan and Dolphin Food and Wine Classic will offer eleven food and beverage seminars in 2017. These range from wine and beer to sushi and cheese. There’s something for everyone! And we can highly recommend the seminars. They’re in-depth, fun, and helmed by experienced experts. It’s worth it. In addition to the Grand Tasting Experience and Riesling, So Sweet & So Dry, seminars include: Italian Wines: Celebrate the relationship between Italians, their wine, and their food by journeying through three regions of the country. More than Malbec: Experience the world of Argentinian wine! Craft Cocktails: Understand the building blocks of classic cocktails like the Whiskey Sour, Gin Fizz, Old Fashioned, and Cosmopolitan. (We reviewed the former seminar Modern Mixology in 2015.) Beer Please: Learn all there is to know about micro brews and craft beers from around the world! Includes perfect food pairings! Pasta Making with Chef Cib: Chef Robert Ciborowski is the hero behind the Classic, and in this seminar, he teaches in the ins and outs of making specialty pastas! The Cheese Course: Explore the world of cheese — and its partnership with port wine. Fine Art of Sushi and Sake: Take a short trip to Japan via the ancient art of sushi and the complex process of sake making! Wine Blending: Learn about the intricate process of making wine in this hands-on seminar that looks at the origins of wine and many varieties of grapes. Base to Bubbles: Life is the bubbles! Experience the the basics of champagne, including learning more about five regions of Champagne! See our 2016 review of this seminar here! Beer at the Classic The Causeway So what will attendees find along the Causeway? This year, there will be booths representing all of the resorts’ restaurants, including Shula’s Steak House, The Fountain, Picabu, Il Mulino, Kimonos, and bluezoo. Additionally, there will be booths for Chef Cib’s Smoke Shop, Chef Todd English, and Pastry Chef Laurent Branlard. Complete menus for the 2017 Classic include tempting dishes like Kobe Beef Mini Burgers, Ricotta Gnocchi, Seared Florida Red Snapper, and Crunchy Chocolate Passion Fruit Truffle. As for the unlimited eats? They’ll be (necessarily!) served as small plates. That is entirely by design to allow you to try at least a bite of everything — with room left over to revisit your favorites. Meanwhile wine and beer samples will come from producers around the world. And in years past, there’s also been at least one distillery represented. St. Augustine has offered samples of craft cocktails for the past couple of years, so expect to see something similar in 2017. Dishes last year showcased a variety of eats and drinks. Below is a sample of the items offered in 2016. Sushi and Sake were crowd favorites, as one might suspect. In 2017, we’re looking forward to the Jalapeno Roll (!) and the Dragon Roll. Sushi and Sake Funky Buddha Brewery brought a bevvy of beverages for guests to try. Funky Buddha Brewery Stand Watching chefs plate their dishes is a fun aspect of the Food and Wine Classic, as these beautiful plates are composed pretty much to order. Chefs at Work Booths are clearly labeled, making it easy for guests to navigate the Causeway (and find their favorites again later in the evening!). Fresh will feature Thai Chicken Salad and Southwest Steak Salad in 2017. Fresh Booth In 2017, Garden Grove is dishing up Fish ‘n’ Chips made with sustainable bass and Seared Florida Red Snapper with Israeli couscous. Garden Grove Booth Cib’s Smokehouse Pork Belly was a dynamite part of the 2016 menu. The 2017 version will be presented with confit fennel and compressed green apple! Cib’s Smokehouse Pork Belly And sushi from the resort’s Kimono’s was elegantly presented. We expect more of the same from the Jalapeno and Dragon Rolls in 2017! Kimono’s Sushi Picabu’s booth served up tacos with a variety of fresh, flavorful toppings. In 2017, attendees will enjoy Taquerias — with pork carnitas and organic vegetables — and Authentic Chicken Tinga Tostadas — with charred tomato and chipotle salsa. Toppings for Tacos at Picabu Picabu Tacos All Dressed Up Southern favorites like Pulled Pork and Mac and Cheese were available at the Fountain booth. The 2017 menu at the Fountain booth is the place to go for Kobe Beef Mini Burgers (with truffle aioli!) and Southern Pulled Pork with Nashville BBQ! Southern Pulled Pork Slider from The Fountain Garden Grove’s booth offered up a light seared Striped Bass — with beautiful garnishes. This year the bass will be transformed into Fish ‘n’ Chips! Seared Striped Bass, Fall Artichokes, Nicoise Olives, Spanish Caper Emulsion from Garden Grove Cabana Bar and Beach Club created this stunning and delicious Bell & Evans chicken dish. Diners will savor Sweet Corn “Risotto” Arancini with a caper emulsion and Double-Fried Chicken this year, y’all! Bell & Evans Chicken Yakitori, Mushroom Tsunomo, Miso Crackling from Cabana Bar and Beach Club And lest you think the Food and Wine Classic is all savory, Pastry Chef Laurent Branlard crafted stunning desserts for the event, as always. The 2017 dessert menu looks like a winner with innovative combinations like Crunchy Chocolate Passion Fruit Truffle and Mandarin Confit. Concert Under the Stars The Causeway at Night The Swan and Dolpin Food and Wine Classic is eight years old — and it’s really getting better with age. It’s a hidden gem, and we keep getting positive comments about it from our readers every single year. Nosh or Not? The Swan and Dolphin Food and Wine Classic is made for you if: You love to try new dishes and drinks and appreciate that unlimited small plates the Classic offers. You are a fan of the elegance of the Swan and Dolphin Resorts and want to extend the experience. You loved the Epcot Food and Wine Festival so much that you want to keep GOING! (The Swan and Dolphin Classic is within walking distance of Epcot!) You could consider skipping the Classic if: You don’t plan on spending time in the Epcot resort area and can’t fit a visit into your touring schedule. You aren’t an adventurous eater and don’t think this would be a good value for you. You prefer to spend less time eating and more time on Soarin’.
