  4. The 2019 Epcot Festival of the Arts kicks off January 18 and runs through February 25! The Festival is a celebration of the visual, culinary, and performing arts. Festival of the Arts One of the highlights of the Festival is the Disney on Broadway Concert Series featuring performances by some of Broadway’s most accomplished actors and actresses singing some of Disney’s most beloved songs at the America Gardens Theater. 5. Welcome back to Backlot Express! Learn About: Backlot Express Disney's Hollywood Studios Disney World Restaurants This counter service option is quite possibly the most popular in Disney’s Hollywood Studios (with the exception of the relatively new Woody’s Lunch Box). Known for its highly detailed movie warehouse setting and classic dishes like chicken nuggets, burgers, and salads, it’s a spot which appeals to many guests. The past couple of years, Backlot Express has also been known as the spot to find some Star Wars themed eats among the offerings. The Royal Guard Burger and Dark Side Chicken and Waffles (with said waffles emblazoned with Darth Vader) were found as entrees in front of Star Wars cupcakes for dessert options featuring an array of characters ranging over the years from Darth Vader and Yoda to Chewbacca and BB-8 and beyond. Backlot Express We’re here today, though, to check out the newly revamped menu and to discover what’s changed and what’s remained the same on the menu at Backlot Express! Backlot Express Menu The main thing you’ll notice when checking out the entrée menu is that the Star Wars themed offerings have been removed… somewhat. You see, technically you’ll still find the Royal Guard Burger (1/3 lb angus beef burger topped with BBQ brisket, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickles), only now it’s called the Backlot Burger. Backlot Express Menu Ditto for the Galactic Salad, which is now the Southwest Salad served with or without chicken. New offerings include a Cuban Sandwich. Four piece Chicken Tenders have replaced the more standard Chicken Nuggets, and the Dark Side Chicken and Waffles have been entirely switched out for a new Chicken and Biscuits entrée. You can still grab a Caprese Sandwich or the California Chicken Club. And for dessert? A new Key Lime Verrine and Peanut Butter Brownie are available. As for drinks, current Backlot Specialty cocktails include a Strawberry Daquiri, Frozen Golden Margarita, and Vodka Lemonade. And your little Padawan may be glad to know that they can still get a BB-8 Souvenir Sipper with their soda or drink if they’re still really hoping for a Star Wars touch here. Backlot Express Menu Let’s dig in! New Backlot Menu Items The Chicken and Biscuits takes homestyle buttermilk biscuits and chicken tenders and tops them with country gravy, a spicy strawberry glaze, and bacon crumbles. Chicken and Biscuits Three nice-sized tenders offer more meat and less breading than the standard Nuggets. Chicken and Biscuits The biscuits themselves are nice and buttery, and not dry at all. Chicken and Biscuits There is nothing remarkable about the gravy, which is fine. But it is outshone by the yummy spicy strawberry glaze which has a surprising amount of kick to it along with its tang. Hooray! Chicken and Biscuits The Cuban Sandwich features roasted pulled pork, sliced ham, Swiss cheese, and pickles and mustard. Cuban Sandwich It comes with French Fries. Cuban Sandwich The pressed sandwich gives the bread some great texture. Cuban Sandwich And when they say that it comes with pickles and mustard, they mean business! There is a lot more applied here than your standard condiments. Cuban Sandwich We really enjoyed how much flavor this lends to the sandwich, but if you’re not a fan of those strong tastes you may want to ask for your sandwich to be made without or to have those on the side. As for the meats, the pork is just okay, and the ham lends a lot more flavor. Cuban Sandwich But overall it’s a really nice change of pace for a counter service sandwich, and it was enjoyed! The Peanut Butter Brownie is, first of all, pretty darn big! Peanut Butter Brownie But it’s obviously different than the Peanut Butter Brownie we’re used to over at Animal Kingdom Lodge. The emphasis remains on the chocolate here with the peanut butter coming from the generous amount of Reese’s Pieces-style candies over top of a layer of fudgy chocolate… at least at first glance. You see, even more peanut butter is tucked inside the brownie itself. Peanut Butter Brownie The whole thing is SUPER dense, rich, and filling with the candy pieces adding a fun and tasty crunch. And did we mention… it’s HUGE?! Peanut Butter Brownie The Key Lime Verrine (Verrines are taking over Hollywood Studios counter service spots, BTW) is a parfait-style dessert layering light and airy key lime custard with graham crumbs topped with a dollop of whipped cream and a white chocolate ring. Key Lime Verrine Even though it was good overall, I was wanting more of a flavor punch from the lime. It was even overpowered just by the dollop of vanilla bean cream (which is delicious, I must say). Key Lime Verrine Key Lime Verrine The new offerings here are solid, and a reminder of why we enjoy Backlot Express as a go-to within the realm of counter service in Hollywood Studios. But the removal of most Star Wars elements from the menu here is a bit of a surprising decision, as Hollywood Studios continues to readily promote Star Wars elements within the park such as the Star Wars Launch Bay and the nighttime production of Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular in anticipation of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening in the park this fall. Then again, it’s hardly a complete shock. After all, Star Wars themed food won’t be quite so necessary when we’re able to grab a drink or maybe even some Blue Milk in an actual Cantina on the Planet Batuu… so there’s that! Check out ALL of the restaurants in Disney’s Hollywood Studios in our DFB YouTube Video! Is Backlot Express one of your favorites? Please let us know with a comment! 8. When my teammates and I learned that this year’s Epcot International Festival of the Arts would find four Disney Vacation Club Member Cruise veterans performing together on stage to conclude the festival’s Disney on Broadway Concert Series, we immediately started making plans to reunite with our old friends. And because these reunions are always more fun with Members in attendance, we decided to turn our little gathering into what promises to be another memorable Membership Magic event. As you may have heard, the stars performing together at Epcot on Feb. 25 include Ashley Brown (Broadway’s original Mary Poppins), Josh Strickland (Broadway’s original Tarzan), Alton Fitzgerald White (Broadway’s record-breaking Lion King, with 4,308 performances as Mufasa) and Kissy Simmons (known to many Disney fans for her standout performances as Nala in “The Lion King”). All four of these performers have gained a friendly following around the Disney Vacation Club neighborhood, with numerous Member Cruise credits on their resumes. (If business trips counted as Castaway Club voyages, this group could be Platinum on Member Cruise voyages alone.) To bring the Epcot International Festival of the Arts to a close in distinctive fashion on Feb. 25, Disney Vacation Club has created a Disney on Broadway Dessert Party for Members and their guests. Attendees will enjoy guaranteed seating at one of the evening’s Disney on Broadway concerts at the America Gardens Theatre and an 8:30-9:30 p.m. fireworks dessert party in the United Kingdom Pavilion before mingling with the Disney on Broadway stars during a casual cocktail hour (9:30-10:30 p.m.) in the Member Lounge atop the Imagination! Pavilion. The cost per person is $77 (plus tax and gratuity) for adults and $52 (plus tax and gratuity) for children. Please note that paid Epcot admission also is required. Call Member Services beginning Jan. 8 at (800) 800-9800 for details and reservations, and get ready to celebrate with the stars! 11. In our Disney Doodle series, our Disney artists take turns imagining what different Disney characters would do or see first if they had the chance to visit a Disney Park. In today’s Doodle, artist Ashley Taylor envisions what Ariel and her pal, Scuttle, would do first at Magic Kingdom Park. According to Ashley, Ariel’s curiosity may compel her to check out the latest souvenirs at the Emporium. “Ariel is always distracted by human objects,” Ashley said. “It’s easy to imagine Scuttle wanting to introduce her to the latest fashions at the Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A.!” View the full article

  13. Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is home to ‘Ohana, a spot is known for its character breakfast in the mornings and its all-you-care-to-enjoy feast in the evenings featuring grilled meats accompanied by pork dumplings and chicken wings, all followed up with ‘Ohana Bread Pudding. ‘Ohana sign One of the traditional accompaniments to the meal has also been lo mein noodles tossed in a teriyaki sauce – which may have its days on the menu numbered. Sides — Wontons, Noodles, Stir Fried Vegetables, Chicken Wings As is always the case when a potential ‘Ohana menu change is on the horizon (see previous menu updates here, here, and here), folks are upset and nervous. This time around, it’s those noodles that are potentially on the chopping block. Some guests, rather than receiving the noodles, have received a side of curry fried rice instead, as evidenced by this picture shared with us here at DFB from @dislovefromMN on Twitter. Curry Rice served at ‘Ohana @dislovefromMN We’ve heard different information from different guests: some have been told that this is simply a test dish (and we’ve even heard reports that the noodles may have already come back after what must have been a very brief trial run for the rice). However, we’ve also spoken with Cast Members at the Polynesian who have reported BOTH that the menu change from noodles to curry rice has not yet been reflected on the Disney World website menu which, at this time, still lists the teriyaki noodles as an accompaniment, AND that the noodles will indeed be replaced by the curry rice. So, basically, nothing is official except that ‘Ohana is indeed testing a new menu item — curry fried rice — that may in time replace the teriyaki noodles. ‘Ohana menu page screenshot The coming days will hopefully reveal more information, and we’ll keep you posted on the status once we hear more! 18. Greetings from Hollywood Studios! As Christmas winds down in the parks we found some changes in the park (Slinky Dog, where’s your tail?) as well as some new additions, and of course some new merchandise to welcome in 2019! Hello from Hollywood Studios! We’ll start this week’s tour out in Animation Courtyard where there’s a brand new Disney Junior Dance Party that is pretty fun! New Disney Junior Dance Party in Hollywood Studios Over the holidays a brand new Disney Junior Dance Party started in Animation Courtyard, and you and your kiddos get to dance along with some Disney Junior stars in a high-energy show. You’ll see Doc McStuffins, Vampirina, and Timon in the show, each with their own segment and specialty dance. Doc McStuffins at Hollywood Studios’ New Disney Junior Dance Party Timon at Hollywood Studios’ New Disney Junior Dance Party Throughout the show and between each segment the hosts of the show keep checking in with the Mickey Roadster Racers in the hopes they will make it to the party on time. Vampirina at Hollywood Studios’ New Disney Junior Dance Party Checking in with the Mickey Roadster Racers at Hollywood Studios’ New Disney Junior Dance Party Spoiler Alert — Mickey and the Roadster Racers make it to the show for the finale!! Mickey at Hollywood Studios’ New Disney Junior Dance Party Mickey at Hollywood Studios’ New Disney Junior Dance Party New Market Snack and Drink Stand in Hollywood Studios Animation Courtyard Just in time for the busy holidays a brand new Market has opened in Animation Courtyard next door to the Joffrey’s Coffee and Tea stand on the way to the Toy Story Land entrance. The Market at Hollywood Studios You’ll find spirited drinks, beers, soft drinks, water, non-alcoholic specialty drinks as well as Churros and Mickey Pretzels here. The Market at Hollywood Studios The Market at Hollywood Studios Toy Story Land Updates — Where is Slinky Dog’s Tail? Even though the Christmas decorations will be taken down this week we spotted some additions to the decorations in the area since our visit right before Christmas. There are new (giant) ornaments on Woody’s Toy Story Land Sign as well as some new garland. New Toy Story Land Christmas Decorations New Toy Story Land Christmas Decorations After we navigated through the crowds — there were so many people in the park this week — we made our way to Slinky Dog Dash. Toy Story Land — So Crowded When we got to Slinky Dog Dash we noticed something was missing. Slinky’s tail has been removed from all of the cars on this popular attraction. We hear the tails have been removed for safety reasons, and they are expected to return in some fashion soon. Slinky — Where’s Your Tail? We noticed Buzz was in a new location for his Meet and Greet. His Meet and Greet was moved closer to the entrance into Toy Story Land, we think to avoid the Slinky Dog Dash ride line, which was so long it was all the way to where the Buzz Meet and Greet is normally. We don’t know if this is temporary because of the crowds, or a permanent move. As always, we’ll keep you updated on this. Buzz Meet and Greet Slinky Dog Dash Line Star Wars Updates: Galaxy’s Edge Progress and Addition to Tatooine Traders Of course, no visit to Toy Story Land is complete without a peek over the wall to check on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge progress (read more about Bob Iger’s — Disney’s CEO — interview about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge here). Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Construction Progress Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Construction Progress The Star Wars store, Tatooine Traders completed an interior refurbishment last year, but just as that was finished, we were surprised with an addition outside the store. Here’s how it’s progressing. Tatooine Traders Addition Progress Tatooine Traders Addition Progress New Merchandise in Hollywood Studios OK, technically this is not merchandise, but it is something you can buy — for now. If you stop for a beer or cider at Baseline Tap House you can get it served in a (plastic) souvenir glass. These are only around for a limited time, so be sure to pop in and get yours soon! Baseline Tap House Souvenir Cup Baseline Tap House Souvenir Cup There’s a new Mickey Through The Years collection that came out — just in time to celebrate Mickey’s 90th! Mickey Through the Years Mug Look at this mug with all of the Mickeys on it from all of our favorite films and shows featuring the Main Mouse! Mickey Through the Years Mug Mickey Through the Years Mug There’s a shirt to go with the mug that includes all of the variations of Mickey on it as well. Mickey Through the Years Shirt This collage collection is too much. Look at this carefully, we found references to Disneyland, Disney World, Tokyo Disney, Mickey, favorite attractions and so much more! It reminds me of the display in the Disneyland Hotel near the conference center! Mickey Collage Collection Yep, we’re going to have to get both of these tops. Mickey Collage Collection The collage merchandise is featured in some new storefront window displays. New Window Displays We also noticed the style of Mickey and Minnie are the same style as the art for Hollywood Studio’s new 30th Anniversary logo, so maybe we’ll be seeing this display all year long as the park celebrates. New Window Displays And, lastly, if you’re trying to catch Santa in these couple of days of Christmas celebrations in the park he is no longer here (we assume he is off on a beach relaxing), but you and your kiddos don’t need to be disappointed. Santa Goofy is sitting in for Santa in the Meet and Greet in the Once Upon a Time store on Sunset Boulevard. Meet Santa Goofy in Once Upon a Time Whew — that is everything new we spotted in the park this week. Be sure to follow us so you are kept up-to-date on all of our park visits and updates! 19. Our next adventure in the parks took us to Animal Kingdom on the search for new food, new merchandise and any updates for you! Animal Kingdom’s Tree of Life We were excited to see and say “welcome back” to a cupcake friend featuring Lion King‘s Simba as our day in the park started at Creature Comforts. What’s New on Animal Kingdom’s Discovery Island Creature Comforts is pretty much our first stop on every visit for some coffee, and to see what’s new as far as mugs and tumblers. But on this visit we were happy to see Simba in cupcake form here. Of course, we’ve enjoyed this cupcake before (5 years ago!), but this version of the cupcake has a new filling — “yummy” white chocolate mousse instead of passion fruit. Welcome Back Simba Cupcake We spotted this guy at Creature Comforts, Pizzafari, and Isle of Java. How cute is he with his orange and yellow buttercream mane? I do wish he looked a little more polished, but… . Lion King Cupcake There’s some new construction going on outside Island Mercantile, we don’t know what this is yet, but will be sure to let you know when we find out! Be sure to follow us for all the latest updates! Island Mercantile Construction Island Mercantile Construction What’s New in Animal Kingdom’s Africa If you’re a Monsters, Inc. fan then be on the lookout for a new popcorn bucket in the shape of Sulley!! (Yep, the same one that made waves in Disneyland during Pixar Fest!) You’ll find Sulley at Mahindi, The Feeding Ground, and Cornivores. Sulley Popcorn Bucket Sulley Popcorn Bucket While you’re at Mahindi and some other snack locations and stands around the park you’ll also find Santa Mickey Sugar Cookies. We took a closer look and instantly recognized these as the cookies handed out at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in the Magic Kingdom in 2018! Santa Mickey Sugar Cookies Santa Mickey Sugar Cookies What’s New in Animal Kingdom’s Asia Since its re-opening Upcountry Landing has kept us busy with updates. This week we found a new pop-up bar in the location. The cast member we talked to was not certain if this would be permanent or just during busy times and seasons. Upcountry Landing Pop-Up Bar Upcountry Landing Pop-Up Bar In addition to some time to sit and relax you can enjoy beer, wine, a “Jolly Lemonade”, or bottles soft drinks and water here. Upcountry Landing Pop-Up Bar What’s New in Animal Kingdom’s Dinoland The Lotus Blossom Cupcake has migrated over to Restaurantosaurus. This yellow cupcake was introduced at Creature Comforts when Rivers of Light debuted, and is filled with strawberry mousse and topped with that oh-so-pretty lotus flower. Is this too pretty to eat? Lotus Blossom Cupcake If savory is more to your liking, the Jalapeno Poppers are still available here that were added in December. Restaurantosaurus Jalapeno Poppers and Drinks Over at Dino Bite Snacks we spotted some pastries and coffee on the menu. We asked a cast member about these and they said they’ve been opening earlier during the busy holiday season (the day we were there they opened at 8:30am) and recently added the pastries. We will keep you updated on if these stay or they were just here for the holidays. Dino Bite Snacks Pastries and Coffee What’s New in Animal Kingdom’s Pandora As Disney moves to reduce plastic bags, we’ve spotted re-usable bags at the refurbished World of Disney store, and now we spotted some very artistic ones in Pandora. Take a look at these! Pandora Reusable Bag These will surely make a splash when you use them at Publix! Pandora Reusable Bag What’s New in Animal Kingdom’s Stores and Shops — New Merchandise Pins, Pins, and more Pins! This Kilimanjaro Safaris hat includes 4 pins. Kilimanjaro Hat And we see some Jungle Cruise humor going on here — look at the red pin — “Safari so Good and I ain’t Lion” Kilimanjaro Hat The 2019 Collectible and Trading Pins are all around the parks and resorts. 2019 Trading and Collectible Pin 2019 Trading and Collectible Pin Which is your favorite? We’re leaning towards Minnie and “it’s a small world” — how about you? Although Chip and Dale are pretty darn cute too as they run away with someone’s popcorn. 2019 Trading and Collectible Pin There are also some 2019 lanyard pouches. 2019 Trading and Collectible Pin Lanyard Pouch 2019 Trading and Collectible Pin Lanyard Pouch “Get Yeti ‘Cuz” Expedition Everest’s Yeti got some of his own pins as well! Yeti Trading and Collectible Pins Yeti Trading and Collectible Pins After we took in all of the pins we went back to the hats, which started us on this pin adventure to begin with! If you prefer your hats without pins there’s a new Everest hat in addition to the Kilimanjaro hat. Everest Hat Jack Skellington and Nightmare Before Christmas fans can pick up this new hat which features two of Jack’s faces. How? you wonder…Jack’s face changes depending on which way you move the sequins! Jack Skellington Hat Jack Skellington Hat If you don’t like one expression, just run your palm over the sequins and you’ll change Jack’s expression. Jack Skellington Hat We saw a couple of pairs of the Disney Cat leggings in the shops here, but the Disney Dog leggings were sold out in the park on the day we were there (you can see them in our What’s New in Magic Kingdom update!). Disney Cat Leggings And that’s all the new merchandise, popcorn buckets, cupcakes, construction, pop-up bars, cookies, and even more that we found this week in the park! 20. Along with new details regarding what guests will see and experience when Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens in Disneyland this summer and Disney’s Hollywood Studios this fall, we also have more information regarding the possible timeline for the opening of Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland. ©Disney from @DisneyParks on Twitter In an interview with Barron’s with Disney CEO Bob Iger, Iger is quoted as saying: “When Star Wars opens in Anaheim in June and in Florida later in the year, that’s adding capacity. You’re adding 14 acres of land (each), more rides and more for people to do. It’s the biggest land we’ve ever built.” Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Construction in Disneyland ©heliguy It’s worth noting that an extended run of blockout dates for Disneyland park for Passholders with a Deluxe Passport begin on June 21st and do not lift until August 19th, so that likely provides further hints to the opening timeframe. 21. Roaring Fork, the quick service dining spot at Walt Disney World’s Wilderness Lodge, is known for showing cupcakes some love. Remember the totally awesome Campfire Cupcake? Loaded Mickey Waffles at Roaring Fork Well, the pastry wizards at Roaring Fork are at it again, this time bringing the flavor with the Chocolate Peppermint cupcake of the month. Chocolate Peppermint Cupcake Aside from the obvious — this is a pale green, sparkly beauty! — the Chocolate Peppermint Cupcake tastes awesome. Chocolate Peppermint Cupcake Think Thin Mint in cupcake form, and you’ve got this one nailed. Chocolate Peppermint Cupcake The frosting is the cool mint of the Chocolate Peppermint Cupcake, and the details in the decorations are so sweet and wintery. There’s some ice-like sugar, snowflake sprinkles, and edible glitter. Elsa would be proud. Chocolate Peppermint Cupcake The interior of the cupcake gives it some richness as it’s filled with thick chocolate fudge! Chocolate Peppermint Cupcake Thick. Chocolate. Fudge. Yum! 25. Disney started the New Year off with a big surprise when it announced the 2019 Free Dining offer for dates this Summer and early Fall! Thinking about planning a Summer visit to Disney World before the crowds descend this fall for the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge? We can help you figure out: Is the Disney World Free Dining offer a good deal? The answer is … it depends. We have an entire chapter in our DFB Guide to Walt Disney World Dining dedicated to this very question and today we’ll look at some factors to consider when deciding if Free Dining is a good deal for YOU. Remember: Free Dining Isn’t Really Free First, and perhaps most importantly, let’s remember that Free Dining isn’t really “free.” With the Free Dining offer guests will be paying the rack rate for the resort of their choice, in addition to theme park tickets that include the Park Hopper or Park Hopper Plus option. Disney’s Wilderness Lodge You might find bigger savings with a room-only discount – including savings of up to 30% at select Deluxe Villas and Deluxe Hotels – and you can add the Dining Plan and park tickets on to these room-only offers. According to our number crunching in the DFB Guide, free dining is very often a good deal — but it depends on how many people are in your family and how deep the discounts are for room-only bookings. Always Do The Math When deciding if you should book the Free Dining offer or a room-only discount, you’ll want to compare the Free Dining to the discounted hotel room offers – adding ticket prices and estimated food expenses to see if it’s the best option for your family. Look at factors including how much your family eats at the parks (especially this year with the Free Dining being offered in the HOT summer months)! Is the Quick Service Dining Plan and a stay at at a Moderate or Value Resort the best fit? Or do you want to enjoy a table service meal or character meal every day with the standard Dining Plan, and a stay at a Deluxe Resort? Is dining with Snow White on your must-do dining list for this year? If you add up your out-of-pocket dining costs with a room-only discount and discover the Free Dining offer will save you money, and you’ll be able to make your Advance Dining Reservations for table service restaurants 180 days in advance, AND the Dining Plan of your choice won’t be restrictive for your dining needs, then it might make sense to book the Free Dining. Check out our analysis of the Disney Dining Plan in this video!
