Bengal Barbecue in Disneyland’s Adventureland is an awesome (and awesomely themed!) spot to grab a snack, and for Valentine’s Day (being celebrated for a few more days at Disneyland Resort!), they’ve got two great options. We sipped on the Piranha Lemonade Slushy, and we gotta say: we’re in love! Piranha Lemonade Slushy Piranha Lemonade Slushy is a mango and pineapple slushy with lychee and pomegranate popping pearls! It’s as refreshing to drink as it sounds! Piranha Lemonade Slushy Definitely stop into Bengal Barbecue for this drink! The restaurant’s Jungle Julep has also returned here, so you’ll want to make multiple visits so you can drink them both! Raise your hand if you’re guilty of stalking the Contempo Cafe pastry case for new cupcakes! Recently, we’ve loved the Churro Cupcake and the Millenial Pink Cupcake. In fact, it has been a few months since we went to Contempo Cafe for something other than a cupcake! But when I stopped by today (yes, for a cupcake) I noticed something new to me on the menu: Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup. Well, twist my arm – I just had to order it. But, don’t worry… I found a fun cupcake too. Read on to find out more! The monorail and the Mary Blair Mural at Contempo Cafe The Grilled Cheese is made with three cheeses – Fontina, Monterrey Jack, and Boursin Garlic & Fine Herb – and is on Sourdough Bread. It is served with Tomato Bisque and your choice of fries, homemade chips, or veggie slaw. I opted for the homemade chips. Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup with Homemade Chips The chips are “kettle-cooked” and so delicious. They are seasoned very well and have a very satisfying crunch. I’d certainly recommend them with any Contempo Cafe entree. They also were very tasty when dipped into the soup. Tomato Bisque Speaking of the soup, I was happily surprised by this Tomato Bisque. It was creamy, but not too thick and had a very pleasant, sweet basil flavor to it. I loved that it had bigger chunks of tomato in it as well. Tomatoes in the Tomato Bisque These tomato pieces were nice and soft, but not slimy. If you’re not a huge tomato fan because of their texture this may throw you off, but I found them a welcomed surprise! This soup was so good, I would order it on its own. Which is saying something, because I normally order tomato soup solely to dip my grilled cheese into it. Anyone else dunk their Grilled cheese into soup? So how was the main attraction, the Grilled Cheese? In short: pretty good! The bread was buttered and toasted perfectly, which is crucial to a good Grilled Cheese. Grilled Cheese Close Up I really liked the mixture of cheeses, as well. The Boursin was the real stand out. It provided a creamy texture, and the garlic and herb flavor elevated this sandwich from your traditional Grilled Cheese. Without it, this would have been pretty lackluster. Overall, this wasn’t the most exciting Grilled Cheese I’ve ever eaten, but I would definitely order it again. Now for the reason for our visit: a new(ish) cupcake! Contempo Cafe has had a whole fruit salad of cupcakes in the past – including Watermelon, Apple, Cherry and Banana! Now we welcome the newest fruit to the bunch- Orange! Orange Cream Cupcake This beauty is the Orange Cream Cupcake. It’s an Orange Cupcake with Cream Filling and Sweet Buttercream Frosting. Orange Cream Cupcake Just look at all that Buttercream! And those Mickey Ears aren’t just for show. Like many Disney cupcakes, they are chocolate! White chocolate in this case. So go ahead, and bite one – you know you want to. Orange Cream Cupcake Cross Section Overall, this tastes like Orange Cream Soda in cupcake form. The cake itself is orange flavored and very moist. It’s not overly sweet and I could have eaten several pieces of it by itself! The creme custard filling is a perfect creamy texture – not too grainy or overly sugary. It’s good on its own, but much better paired with a bite of the cake. The buttercream was a little light on this one compared to other Contempo cupcakes, but that made it a better option for someone who’s not looking for sweetness overload. (Your mileage may vary on the amount of buttercream, so be prepared.) Once again, Contempo Cafe is a winner! There’s a reason it’s a DFB favorite — it’s a great spot for something quick and tasty, and always has something fun in the pastry case. It may not be as flashy as other locations, but it’s proved time after time that it’s reliable for a delicious meal and sweet treat! We will certainly be back (again and again). Walt Disney Archives founder Dave Smith passed away in Burbank, California, on February 15, 2019. He was 78. Dave dedicated his four-decade career at The Walt Disney Company to preserving Disney’s precious treasures from film, television, theme parks, and beyond. Named a Disney Legend in 2007, Dave was beloved by fans around the world for his wide knowledge of the Company’s rich history, which he shared in books and through his popular magazine column “Ask Dave.” “I’m deeply saddened to learn of Dave Smith’s passing,” said Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “He was the unsung hero of Disney’s history who, as our first archivist, spent 40 years rescuing countless documents and artifacts from obscurity, investing endless hours restoring and preserving these priceless pieces of our legacy, and putting them in context to tell our story. Dave was a true Disney Legend, and we are indebted to him for building such an enduring, tangible connection to our past that continues to inspire our future.” Dave was hired in 1970 by Walt’s brother—and The Walt Disney Company co-founder—Roy O. Disney, and his first responsibility was cataloguing every item inside Walt’s office suite, which had been left untouched after Walt’s passing four years prior. Thanks to Dave’s meticulously detailed notes and records, the Archives was able to restore the suite in 2015, and today Disney employees are able to visit and draw inspiration from this remarkable space. During his time as Disney’s Chief Archivist, Dave grew the Archives from a simple one-person department to a model among corpo­rate archives. He was regarded by fans and historians as the final authority on matters of Disney history, and was an active member of the Society of California Archivists. He served from 1980 to 2001 as Executive Director of the Manuscript Society, an international association of collectors, dealers, librarians, archivists, and others interested in manuscript material. Born and raised in Pasadena, California, the child of librarians and educators, Dave earned a B.A. in history and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of California at Berkeley. Before coming to Disney, he gained library and archives experience working in the Manuscript Department of the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, interning at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and serving on the staff of the Research Library at U.C.L.A. Dave wrote extensively about Disney history, with regular columns in Disney fan publications and websites, as well as authoring, co-authoring, and editing numerous articles and books on Disney history, including the official Disney encyclopedia Disney A to Z, Disney: The First 100 Years, The Quotable Walt Disney, Disney Trivia from the Vault, and The Ultimate Disney Trivia Books 1, 2, 3, and 4. In October 2007, Dave was honored with the prestigious Disney Legend Award. A resident of Burbank, California, Dave retired in 2010 after his 40th anniversary with The Walt Disney Company and continued working for the next nine years as a consultant for the Company, with the title of Chief Archivist Emeritus. Austin Dillon, the defending Daytona 500 Champion, brought a little bit of his own magic to Magic Kingdom Park recently where he surprised a young fan, Jordan Wade, with an unforgettable Disney day. Austin and Jordan met last year just days before the Daytona 500, when Austin gave Jordan an autographed hat. In return, Jordan gave Austin a lucky penny. And it truly was lucky, because days later Austin actually won the Daytona 500! As a thank you, Austin wanted to do something to thank Jordan, and what better way than a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort? What started out as a fun-filled day at Magic Kingdom for Jordan turned into the surprise of a lifetime with a special visit from Mickey Mouse and a photo with the Daytona 500 trophy. The Pineapple-Whip Swirl Cupcake — or, as we’ve been referring to it, the Dole Whip Cupcake — at Intermission Food Court at Disney World’s All Star Music is something of a two-for-one treat. Pineapple Whip Swirl Cupcake Take the flavor of the beloved Pineapple and Vanilla Swirl Dole Whip, and combine it with a cupcake! The touch of pineapple pixie dust comes by way of a tiny pipette of pineapple-flavored sauce with which to infuse or drizzle over the cupcake. Pineapple Whip Swirl Cupcake On its own, the sauce is nearly sickeningly sweet, but when drizzled on, it tastes great with the icing. And the result is that the whole thing together really does resemble a Dole Whip in flavor! Intermission Food Court in Disney World’s All Star Music Resort is showing some evidence that Princess Aurora’s fairy godmothers may have been near… Princess Aurora Cupcakes in the bakery case The telltale signs are on the Princess Aurora Cupcake in honor of Sleeping Beauty, which you’ll currently spot as the current Cupcake of the Month in the bakery case! Clearly, Flora wanted the icing to be pink, while Merryweather wanted it to be blue, and here is the stunning result! It’s the question everyone is asking right now – What are the dates for the 2019 Epcot Food and Wine Festival? We’ve been getting A LOT of emails and messages lately about this, and we KNOW you’re all eager to start planning your trips, booking your hotels, and looking for flights. We are, too! What are the dates for the 2019 Food and Wine Festival? What Are The Dates For the 2019 Epcot Food and Wine Festival? The dates for this year’s festival have not yet been announced. But we can make some pretty good guesses based on previous years that will hopefully help you as you start to make your plans. Last year the Festival ran for 75 days from August 30 (Thursday) until November 12 (Monday)! In 2017, when the Festival celebrated its 35th anniversary is also ran for a record 75 days (for the first time ever!) from August 31 (Thursday) until November 13 (Monday). Prior to that, in 2016 the Festival ran from September 14 (Wednesday) through November 14 (Monday), and in 2015 the Festival didn’t start until September 25 (Friday) and ended November 16 (Monday). Coming Soon! sign Looking at the 2017 and 2018 dates, it is very likely that the 2019 Epcot Food and Wine Festival will start between the middle and end of August — likely August 22 or 29, and will run through November 11, 2019. While we don’t expect an extension of beyond 75 days, it could happen. You just never know with Disney! If they do add on more days it would likely be at the beginning of the Festival in August. It is unlikely that Disney would extend the festival past a closing date of November 11, since they’ll start running into holiday events and the Festival of the Holidays in Epcot as well as the opening of Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. (But the have surprised us before so you never know!) When Will Epcot Food and Wine Festival Dates Be Announced? In 2018, Epcot Food and Wine Festival dates were announced on March 12th. But for 2017, dates were announced in November of 2016! We’re guessing we’ll see dates announced in early March, but that’s just an estimate based on last year. With Galaxy’s Edge happening this year, anything can upset the apple cart! On October 4, 2019 Disney will simultaneously launch the product lines for Star Wars: Episode IX and Frozen II at events around the world known as Star Wars Triple Force Friday and Frozen Fan Fest. Star Wars Triple Force Friday Triple Force Friday will kick off at 12:01 am on October 4, with Frozen Fan Fest events kicking off later in the day and lasting until Frozen II‘s release on November 22, 2019. Star Wars Triple Force Friday Triple Force Friday will celebrate the launch of brand-new products inspired by three original Star Wars entertainment events: The release of the final installment of the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: Episode IX, on December 20, 2019 The first-ever Star Wars live-action series, The Mandalorian, set to debut exclusively on the upcoming streaming service, Disney+. The latest title from EA and Respawn, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a brand-new action adventure game releasing for the 2019 holiday season. Products spanning categories from toys and collectibles to housewares, books, apparel and more will go on sale beginning at 12:01 a.m. on October 4, 2019. Stores around the world will join the festivities with in-store events and midnight openings. Remember earlier this week when we reported there were new menu items at Disney Springs? Well we couldn’t resist trying a few of them as soon as possible! Today we stopped by The Polite Pig to sample some of their latest offerings. The Polite Pig On our list for today were the Burnt Ends BBQ Meatballs, the Seasonal Side, the Bee’s Knees Cocktail, and the Red Velvet Cake…of course we had to get dessert! New Menu Items at The Polite Pig First up, the Bees Knees cocktail. This small batch cocktail includes London Dry Gin, honey, and lemon. The Bee’s Knees This was a very refreshing beverage. The gin flavor wasn’t overwhelming, which was perfect because I’m not a huge gin fan. The sweetness of the honey was very nicely balanced by the sourness of the lemon. Unlike a lot of mixed cocktails, it wasn’t sickly sweet which is a win in my book! All in all, it’s a pretty good drink! The Bee’s Knees Now, onto the Burnt Ends BBQ Meatballs. These are meatballs made out of the house brisket, and served with cheddar grits. They are topped with crispy onions and the Polite Pig’s Signature Layla’s Sweet BBQ Sauce. They are under the “Shareables” section of the menu, but with a side, these could absolutely be a hearty meal! Burnt End BBQ Meatballs These meatballs were delicious. They were incredibly moist and tender, and had a smokey flavor that you’d expect from the BBQ restaurant. The grits are a somewhat unusual accompaniment for meatballs, but they are so creamy and actually make a perfect pairing. Additionally, the onions add a nice crunch to your bite, especially considering everything else in the dish is a softer texture. Overall, this was a great dish and certainly one we’d order again! Burnt Ends BBQ Meatballs Cross Section Next up, the Seasonal Side. Today, the “chef’s whim” was a combination of two Southern staples: Greens n’ Grits. For those unfamiliar with “greens,” these are Collard Greens, which are a leafy vegetable in the Kale family. Greens N’ Grits The Collards are accompanied by the cheddar grits as well as black eyed peas. You might expect the greens to be bitter, but they really aren’t! They are cooked very well. The Greens N’ Grits are certainly a unique choice, especially if you’ve never had Collard Greens before. That said, there are so many delicious sides at The Polite Pig that we probably wouldn’t try these again. Red Velvet Cake Last up, dessert! Gone is the Key Lime Pie, and it’s been replaced by the Red Velvet Cake. This cake is…meh. Unlike a good piece of cake which is rich and moist, mine was very dry and crumbly. The frosting, which can often save a mediocre piece of cake, is bland, so…no dice. Red Velvet Cake Bite Overall, this cake was not a winner. But you know what IS winning at The Polite Pig? Gideon’s Chocolate Chip Cookie which we think is the best cookie in Walt Disney World. If you’re going to get dessert here, we highly recommend this one! Gideon’s Cookies — Chocolate Chip Overall, Polite Pig is still a hearty and destination-worthy spot for counter service eats in Disney Springs, but the menu CAN be hit or miss. Mobile Order made its debut as part of the My Disney Experience app in May of 2017. My Disney Experience app This in-app feature allows guests to pre-order and pre-pay for their food at participating Counter Service Restaurants around Disney World. Upon arrival to the restaurant, guests using Mobile Order can then bypass the ordering queue and go straight to a designated Pick Up Counter to get their food to save time that would otherwise be spent in line. The new interface has already been in place for Mobile Order in Disneyland, but now it’s also live on My Disney Experience for Disney World guests. Let’s check out the new look! As always, first simply choose the restaurant you would like to dine at. How does Casey’s Corner sound today? Casey’s Corner on Mobile Order Once you select “Order Food,” that’s when things start to look a little different. Previously, guests would continually scroll to see the full menu. Sprinkles Cupcakes locations in Walt Disney World and Disneyland have two returning cupcakes, and for one, the cupcake wizards of Sprinkles have found inspiration in the most important meal of the day! This isn’t the first time breakfast flavors have found their way onto (and into!) a Sprinkles Cupcake. Back in January the bakery offered four cereal cupcake options! (See our post about the cereal cupcakes here!) Sprinkles in Disney Springs But this first returning flavor is a little more subtle. It’s the Stuffed French Toast Cupcake featuring a raspberry-filled yellow cake topped with cinnamon cream cheese frosting dusted with cinnamon sugar! No chunky cereal toppings — but lots of yummy cinnamon flavor! But don’t hit the snooze alarm because the Stuffed French Toast Cupcake is only available until Monday!
