  8. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the life-sized Gingerbread House at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. This popular holiday display stands 14 feet tall in the lobby of the resort, and if you’ve ever wanted to see how this magical creation is built, then I’ve got a video for you! Watch as our talented team of pastry chefs transform the lobby into a sweet-smelling gingerbread spectacle: Throughout the year, using a classic Austrian gingerbread recipe, our Grand Floridian pastry chefs spend over 400 hours baking the 10,000 gingerbread pieces it takes to create the display. Once base structure is completed, the chefs spend an entire week decorating the house with over 1,000 pounds of honey, 700 pounds of chocolate, 600 pounds of confectioner’s sugar, and many more ingredients! You might even find a few hidden Mickeys sprinkled throughout the decorations… In addition, the house doubles as a sweet shop selling freshly-baked house-made items such as: Gingerbread Cookies Gingerbread Shingles Stollen Bread Christmas Tree Brownie S’mores Cookies Chocolate Peppermint Bark Gingerbread Ornaments Miniature Gingerbread Houses Assorted Gingerbread Cookie Bags White Chocolate Disney Characters Lollipops Caramel Pecan Fudge Cinnamon Apple Cupcakes Grand Floridian Combo Box Featuring Assorted Sweet Treats Gluten and Vegan Friendly Gingerbread Cookies and Other Snack Items And if you’re wanting to get in on the gingerbread action yourself, you can attend a gingerbread house decorating demonstration. These demos occur daily in front of the house through December 25, 2018. For more info on the gingerbread displays across Walt Disney World Resort as well as Disneyland Resort, Disney Cruise Line, and Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa, check out my recent blog post with all the delicious details! 10. Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is busy as they work to build the new Tron attraction opening in 2021 for the park’s 50th anniversary (can’t wait!). This week a popular, and original ride was temporarily closed as they continue construction on the new Tron attraction. Fantasyland Train Station Closed Sign That’s right, the Walt Disney Railroad isn’t running as Tron’s construction nears the railroad tracks, but it isn’t all bad news for fans of the train. Even tough you can’t ride the train, you can still SEE the train. The train is sitting “in residence” in the Main Street U.S.A. Train Station for photo opps, and a chance to get up close to the train and engine. Main Street U.S.A. Train Station As you approach the train station you’ll see this sign inviting you to take an up-close view of a steam train. Main Street, U.S.A. Train Station Closed Sign This is a great time to take a look at the engine and get awesome photos. Walt Disney Railroad Steam Train “In Residence” at Main Street, U.S.A. Station Walt Disney Railroad Steam Train “In Residence” at Main Street, U.S.A. Station We’re thinking this is a great spot for our next family picture! Walt Disney Railroad Steam Train “In Residence” at Main Street, U.S.A. Station Even though you won’t hear the train whistle for a while, you do still get to enjoy the train. Plus, when you’re in the train station you get a great view of Main Street, U.S.A. and Cinderella Castle! Main Street, U.S.A. from the Train Station The pathway between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland that ran from Space Mountain along the back of the Tomorrowland Speedway to the Fantasyland Train Station and the Barnstormer is now closed as well due to Tron’s construction. Pathway Between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland Closed The Tomorrowland Speedway will close for some of 2019, but reopen as the same attraction. Pathway Between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland Closed We also spotted a crane in the area behind Beast’s Castle and Under the Sea — Journey of the Little Mermaid. Crane Behind Beast’s Castle With the closings, we are happy to report seeing the Riverboat in Liberty Square out taking test runs! We’ve been watching the refurbishment on the Rivers of America from its draining, to it sitting without the Riverboat, to the Riverboat’s return last week. Now it looks like we’ll be able to take a relaxing ride on the Riverboat soon! Liberty Belle Riverboat Taking Test Runs We’ll keep you posted on when we see this re-open to guests! Liberty Belle Riverboat Taking Test Runs Walt once said “Disneyland will never be complete.” With all of the additions to Disney World and Disneyland (Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Skyliner, Guardians of the Galaxy Ride, Ratatouille Ride, Star Wars Hotel…so many more!) we can see Walt’s quote was full of foreshadowing! 12. The Disney World landscape continues to change quite rapidly with the ongoing construction of the Disney Skyliner gondola transportation system, which is slated to open to guests in fall of 2019. This, of course, includes progress at each of the stations along the way, which will ultimately connect Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot to four Resorts: Art of Animation, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach and the upcoming Disney’s Riviera Resort. Mickey with a Disney Skyliner Gondola A few weeks ago, we noticed in particular some of the artwork on the roof for the Epcot Skyliner station. Even while it was partially covered, we were able to spy the colorful piece of art in progress. 17. It’s no secret we love our pretzels here at Disney Food Blog. Is it the bready dough, the salt, or the plastic cheese we love most? We’ll never tell (yes we will. plastic cheese.). But, our latest trip to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom had us in pretzel overdrive with not one, not two, not three, but four (yes four!) pretzel updates! We’ll start with the cutest update which is this new set of couples t-shirts. For the Sweet and Salty Couple There’s always a sweet one and a salty one in any relationship right? Which shirt will you be wearing on your next visit to the parks? Over in Tomorrowland at The Lunching Pad we spotted the removal of the Infinity Pretzel/Pretzel Mask that was introduced here in the summer for the Incredible Summer events and stuck around — it was even in the park last week! However, we don’t bring all bad pretzel news about this location, because….drumroll…the Cream Cheese Pretzels are back in this location! (Previously, we’d seen the Cream Cheese Pretzel do a stint at Cheshire Cafe, but don’t worry — we have updates from there as well.) The Lunching Pad Menu If you like your pretzel Mickey-shaped you can get that here too along with our beloved plastic cheese. The Lunching Pad Menu If you’re in Fanstasyland and get a pretzel craving stop over at the Cheshire Cafe, which is now offering the Pepper Jack Pretzel. 18. If you’re visiting the parks this holiday season, there’s a whole feast of new eats to fill your stomach before the new year! At both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, you’ll find new items at many restaurants across the parks and hotels from beignet burgers and lobster dishes to dino-themed cocktails and more. Without further ado, here’s your December edition of Disney Parks Best Bites. At Disneyland Resort, Hungry Bear Restaurant in Disneyland park recently implemented a whole new menu! There are two new sandwiches that you can’t miss: the Honey-Spiced Chicken sandwich with lettuce and sweet and spicy spread and the Crispy Fish Sandwich with sweet and spicy slaw and lemon-citrus mayonnaise. For burgers, you can enjoy the Classic Cheeseburger, the BBQ Double Cheeseburger (with bbq sauce, an onion ring, and jalapeño pickle relish), Messy Melvin’s Vegan Specialty Burger served with a vegan patty and stewed vegetables. At Walt Disney World Resort, Coral Reef Restaurant at Epcot has added an appetizing new seafood dish. This whole-stuffed Maine lobster comes with crispy baby potatoes, asparagus, béarnaise, lemon, and butter. Make a reservation for lunch or dinner and try it for yourself! Disney’s Animal Kingdom has added some new items to Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery, and Harambe Market, and you’ll even find a brand-new lounge at Restaurantosaurus! At Kusafiri Bakery, you’ll find a few new breakfast items to help you kick-start your day, including a Cheese and Guava Danish and a Pistachio Honey Croissant. For something a little more savory, try the Sausage Egg and Cheese Biscuit or a Spinach and Feta Quiche. Stop by Harambe Market to try a new Chicken Gyro served with African coleslaw as well as three new bowl options: the Ribs Bowl, the Chicken Bowl, and the Roasted Vegetable Bowl. All three bowls come with a cilantro rice and green salad base and a side of green salsa and pico de gallo. At Restaurantosaurus, you can now sit back and relax in the afternoons at the new Restaurantosaurus Lounge. Sip on a selection of beers, wines, and specialty alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and snack on some light and yummy bites. Alcoholic cocktails include the Tequilasaurus (a tart margarita), the Ferminted Fossil (a minty mojito), the Primordial Booze (pomegranate and lemonade with vodka), and the Carnotaurus Meteoritis (a bourbon sour). Non-alcoholic mocktails include the Teal Rex with pineapple and lemon juices, lemonade, and blue raspberry syrup, the Paleontology Punch with lemonade, Sprite, and cranberry, apple, pomegranate, and lime juices, and Raptor Refresher with cranberry and orange juice and strawberry purée. Pair any of these drinks with either a bowl of Sweet-and-Spicy Mixed Nuts or Buffalo Chicken Dip served with house-made chips. A couple of the Walt Disney World Resort hotels across property have new items as well – like the incredible Beignet Burger at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter! Just dance on over to Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory to get this burger topped with American cheese, bacon jam, pickled onions, bbq bayou sauce, and house-made pickles and served on – you guessed it – a beignet bun! And right next door at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, you won’t want to miss the all-you-care-to-enjoy Chef’s Platter at Boatwright’s Dining Hall. The platter comes with ribs, Nashville hot chicken, barbecued beef brisket, smoked sausage, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, street corn, and green beans. Finally, Tambu Lounge at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is featuring a whole new menu. Tempt your palate with seafaring apps such as Conch Ceviche, a savory mix served in a coconut, or the Shrimp Cocktail with fresh shrimp marinated in Florida citrus juices. Other sharable plates include the Crispy Chicken Spring Roll served with pickled vegetables, the Beef Carpaccio Tataki with thinly-sliced beef in a spicy black pepper marinade topped with chili oil, or the Tambu Mixed Grill Kebab with chicken, steak, and shrimp served grilled with savory peanut sauce. Today Disney gave a sneak peak at the new location and it looks like it will be a great spot for eats — especially Dole Whips! Tropical Hideaway ©Disney The Tropical Hideaway will be made up of “market stalls” with open-air seating and fun torch lights. It’s also opening soon (it was previously announced opening in late-2018). You’ll be able to get to The Tropical Hideaway by crossing its main bridge, through Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, or along “Skipper’s Walk” a pathway leading from the Jungle Cruise loading dock. SO FUN! Tropical Hideaway ©Disney Tropical Hideaway ©Disney Once at The Tropical Hideaway you’ll be greeted by Rosita the Cockatoo who is waiting for her boat to show up. She’s quite chatty as she talks to guests as they arrive. The location will also be home to the birdhouses of some other stars from The Enchanted Tiki Room — their homes will be along the roof line of the new location. Rosita at Tropical Hideaway ©Disney Tropical Hideaway ©Disney Since it sits along the Jungle Cruise’s waterfront you can expect some fun, exotic eats here including an assortment of Bao Buns and Disney World’s Sweet Pineapple Lumpia. 21. There are Disney fans – and then there are Disney “fanatics.” Someone who buys the original Disneyland sign probably falls into the second category. That’s John Stamos. An actor, producer, musician and singer, Stamos (“General Hospital,” “Full House,” “Fuller House”) makes no secret about his Disney passions, especially since recently getting married and having his first child this year. Stamos, who has previously performed in the “Candlelight Processional” at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort, graced the America Gardens Theatre stage for a return visit as celebrity narrator for the 2018 “Candlelight Processional,” part of the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays. We caught up with John before his second night of performances at Epcot, where he talked of family holiday traditions, favorite “Candlelight” memories and his love for all things Disney. Epcot International Festival of the Holidays Holiday traditions from around the world come to life at Epcot International Festival of the Holidays, featuring the new Holiday Cookie Stroll and new food and beverage at Holiday Kitchens. Through Dec. 30, Epcot brims with holiday magic, as guests will be able to sample international seasonal delicacies, delight in live entertainment, and enjoy festive decor. Guests discover a festival like no other, featuring the joyous holiday traditions of our 11 World Showcase nations. Epcot International Festival of the Holidays surrounds you in the wondrous sights, sounds and flavors of the season, as celebrated by cultures near and far. Guests also savor some of the most delectable holiday dishes from across the globe at 13 specialty kitchens set around World Showcase. New items this year include black forest roulade with cherry whipped cream at the Bavaria Holiday Kitchen in the Germany pavilion and sofrito-marinated beef with sweet plantains and olives at the Feast of the Three Kings Holiday Kitchen. At the “Candlelight Processional,” the story of Christmas is powerfully told by a celebrity narrator accompanied by a full choir and a 50-piece orchestra in a performance that inspires joy and holiday spirit. New narrators this year include Helen Hunt, Alfonso Ribeiro, Bart Millard and voice of Moana, Auli’i Cravalho. Returning favorites include Neil Patrick Harris, Whoopi Goldberg and voice of Ariel, Jodi Benson. Guests can add more magic to their holiday celebrations with a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner followed by reserved seating at a performance of the Candlelight Processional.
