It’s always true that you should “look up” when you’re in Disney World so you’re sure to catch various details and design throughout the Resort within the parks, their attractions, and Resorts. But now “look up” is especially good advice, because you may just catch one of the gondolas from the Disney Skyliner now in testing! Disney Skyliner Gondola We just spotted gondolas in place last week at the Hollywood Studios station, but initial testing is now underway for the gondolas to take to the skies. Disney Skyliner Gondola Several gondolas will be decorated with characters and graphics from Disney films and attractions. Here is a look at new artwork which Disney just revealed! Ratatouille Represented attractions will include The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. Sharp-eyed visitors to Walt Disney World Resort this week may have spotted something new up in the sky while Disney Skyliner began its initial testing. Scheduled to open this fall, Disney Skyliner will be a new, state-of-the-art gondola system that will conveniently connect Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot to four resort hotels – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and the proposed Disney’s Riviera Resort, which is now accepting guest reservations for stays beginning December 16, 2019. The official Resort opening date will be announced at a later time. The Skyliner’s towers have been under construction for about a year, so to have a gondola up on its cables is an exciting milestone! Afternoon Tea at Steakhouse 55 That’s right… Afternoon Tea “Got Its Ears On” for the occasion, too! Afternoon Tea at Steakhouse 55 Though you may experience the traditional Afternoon Tea depending on when you visit, themed Afternoon Teas often reflect the various seasons and celebrations around Disneyland Resort throughout the year. And now through March 31, 2019, Mickey’s Tea Party Celebration presents oodles of creative Mickey twists on classic Afternoon Tea fare. (Note that a Valentine’s theme will be more prominent from February 8 – 17, 2019). Minnie Rose arrangement As we move into the treats, one of the most charming and thoughtful details you’ll notice throughout the Tea are the white chocolate accompaniments with several of the sweets showcasing magical film moments with Mickey and Minnie starting with the Mickey and Minnie Scones. Scones These are accompanied by three lovely spreads of lemon curd, Devonshire cream, and fruit marmalade. Lemon Curd, Devonshire Cream, and Fruit Marmalade with scone The menu, of course, says “Traditional Scones,” but we’re glad the scones got a little less traditional with the Mickey shapes and drizzles of colorful icing. If you’re ready to Get Your Ears On at Disney California Adventure Park, you can eat your way through one of the park’s most popular attractions: Mickey’s Fun Wheel! Mickey’s Fun Wheel Cookie The Mickey’s Fun Wheel Cookie is a raspberry jam-filled sugar cookie topped with fun and colorful white chocolate drizzles and features the Mickey’s Fun Wheel icon on an edible medallion. Mickey’s Fun Wheel Cookie For $5.00, this is a sizable cookie that’s large enough to share. You’ll pick it up at the Gourmet Coffee cart in DCA. Mickey’s Fun Wheel Cookie But the question is: will you want to? The star of the Mickey’s Fun Wheel Cookie is by far the raspberry jam, which is tart, sweet, and delicious. But without that, the cookie is bland. Mickey’s Fun Wheel Cookie. Sadly the sugar cookie and the white chocolate accents just can’t match the tasty jam, and overall the cookie isn’t as enjoyable to eat as it is to look at. Mickey’s Fun Wheel Cookie Bummer! Such a fun looking cookie and themed after such a fun attraction. But unless you’re really in it for the jam and don’t care if the rest of the treat is bland, Mickey’s Fun Wheel Cookie is a pass. We also tried the Celebration Cookies here. This is a trio of shortbread cookies with two different fillings: raspberry jam and dulce de leche! Celebration Cookies The ears on the Mickey Celebration Cookies are twin dulce de leche-filled shortbread cookies topped with white chocolate medallions. The flavor of these is there at first but fades quickly, leaving you with two fairly bland cookies. Sugar Cookies filled with Dulce de Leche The raspberry jam filling on the larger cookie is good, but that’s not enough to make up for the rest of them — especially at $12 for the trio! Walt Disney World’s Land Pavilion is home to one of our go-to quick service spots in Epcot’s Future World — Sunshine Seasons — but upstairs from Living with the Land is one of my favorite underrated character meals: Garden Grill. It’s here, in a rotating restaurant, that diners meet Disney character friends, dine on some really great grub, and get a bird’s eye view of the attraction below. It’s truly one-of-a-kind. I just think they’re more fun, plus your view of the Livin’ With The Land attraction scenes below is much better with a booth! Booth Seating Facing The Land Attraction Table Seating Garden Grill Characters Before we get into the food, let’s say hello to some friends. Garden Grill is home to Farmer Mickey who always looks sharp in his overalls and plaid! Farmer Mickey! You’ll also meet Chip and Dale. You can tell them apart by their noses. This one’s Chip (because his nose looks like a chocolate chip)! As per usual, the ‘munks can get a little silly here! Chip! And Dale has that adorable red nose! Dale at Garden Grill If you’re more of a dog person, Pluto keeps things fun with his signature pose! Pluto! Garden Grill is also fun in that characters often rotate through more than once, meaning you might catch a certain pup’s signature pose… more than once! Pluto! For Disney Parks fans, Garden Grill has the added perk of giving diners a bird’s eye view of Living with the Land! The restaurant is designed to have an upper level and a lower level, and that lower level is best for catching these views. Many of us daydream about living in this quaint farmhouse. Living with the Land Farmhouse! And good news! When you dine at Garden Grill, you can see that they’ve left the light on for you in your farmhouse! All. about. those. details. Farmhouse details! Garden Grill Eats But okay, characters and theme park attractions are fun and all, but what about the food? Garden Grill dinner is typically pretty good! Our last review was from just over a year ago, and things have been tweaked — but in a good way! The meal at Garden Grill starts with some warm, tasty dinner Rolls and Butter. These are a great way to begin this foray into comfort food. Rolls and Butter Next up, as always, is the Harvest-Inspired Salad. This is renowned as consisting of vegetables grown right downstairs in the Land Pavilion. This time it included black olives, cucumbers, and mixed greens. It’s dressed in a tangy vinaigrette. Harvest-Inspired Salad Since our last visit, the platter of meats has become a skillet. This presentation is somehow more appealing, with vibrant colors dispersed throughout. I think it actually LOOKS like more food, too — even though this has always been an all-you-care-to-eat restaurant. Garden Grill Skillet The items on the skillet have also improved. The Sliced Turkey was delicious and moist, as was the Slow-Braised Pot Roast (a superior version of the pot roast of past visits in that it now comes with braised potatoes and carrots just like Mom used to make!!). I had mixed feelings to see that Carved Pork with Apple Chutney had replaced Italian Sausage. I thought the sausage was delicious, and while the pork is fine…I’d probably prefer the sausage. Sides on the skillet include buttery Green Beans, tart Cranberry Sauce, seriously delicious Herb and Leek Stuffing, and some honestly great Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes. Garden Grill Skillet In addition to alllllll of this, we also received a platter of carbs: Mac and Cheese (with Goldfish — the only place we’ve spotted the famous crackers in the World!), French Fries, and Sweet Potato Fries! Sides at Garden Grill That last bit — the Sweet Potato Fries — momentarily replaced the traditional French Fries for a short while last year, to the chagrin of many guests. But now (at least on my visit!) there was a little bit of both! Fries The Mac and Cheese is super creamy and satisfying, and if you’ve got a picky eater in tow, this will do! Mac and Cheese Dessert hasn’t changed here in a while, and that’s fine with me! Berry Short Cake is a combo of strawberries and blueberries in strawberry sauce (all fresh tasting) ladled atop a split round pound cake. Vanilla Bean Whipped Cream finishes it off. Berry Short Cake If you need them, these classic sugar cookies are also available! I think this was the kids’ dessert on our visit. Sadly, it’s not anything as cute and unique as it used to be for the kiddos. Sugar Cookies! Garden Grill is still a super fun character meal in a unique location that also happens to have delicious, comforting food. And because it’s a bit more under the radar than Chef Mickey’s or Cinderella’s Royal Table, getting an ADR at Garden Grill tends to be a little easier. But that doesn’t make it any less exciting! The time has come! Disney pronounced their dedication to eliminating single-use plastics, including plastic bags, in 2019, and we’re starting to see even more reusable bag options in Disney World and Disneyland — this time specific to the locations where they’re found! We saw some generic Disney reusable bags when World of Disney re-opened recently. But today in Disneyland we spotted these Disneyland-specific bags. Disneyland Reusable Bags Bags are $1.00, $1.50, and $2.00 depending on size, and you can see that the bags for each park show attractions in that specific park. On this Disneyland version, you have it’s a small world, Space Mountain, and Star Tours (or, the soon to be found in Disneyland Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge). Disneyland Reusable Bags And on the Disney California Adventure bag you can see Carthay Circle, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, and Cozy Cone Motel. Disney California Adventure Reusable Bag DFB readers have also reported location-specific bags in Disney World parks and resorts. There have been mixed responses to the no-single-use-plastics declaration, which includes eliminating single-use plastic straws, cup lids, and hotel amenities from the parks and resorts. Currently, straws and lids are no longer offered to guests purchasing beverages at counter service locations (straws are often found nearby on condiment counters, but are not given automatically to guests), and we’ve seen some refillable amenities popping up in resort hotel rooms as well. Check it out!! We’ve seen loads of Disney Food merchandise in the parks the past few years, and especially in the last couple of weeks with the new D-Lish line. And today we spotted some brand new scented food merchandise in Disneyland – pillows, specifically! Dole Whip Scented Pillow So far, we’ve spotted donuts, Mickey bars, macarons, and more! Donut scented pillow Cupcake scented pillow Mickey Bar scented pillow Macaron scented pillow The scents on these do actually differ a little. We got a strong chocolate for the Mickey bar and the cupcake, and strawberry for the Macaron and the donut. The Dole Whip has hardly any scent on our visit. Price before tax is $27.99.
