This week, everyone’s favorite villain, Maleficent, returned to Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade at the Walt Disney World Resort! And to celebrate her return, we shared several stories, including a special look at the Maleficent dragon’s grand entrance at Magic Kingdom Park. Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade is a celebration of all beloved Disney stories you will find in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom Park. The procession features nearly 100 performers and Disney characters, with floats specifically telling the stories of “Tangled,” “Peter Pan,” “Brave,” “Sleeping Beauty” and many more. Walt Disney World’s Wilderness Lodge is a terrific place to grab a meal. It’s home to the fun and family-friendly Whispering Canyon Cafe and to the new and fantastic Storybook Dining at Artist Point. Geyser Point Bar & Grill and Territory Lounge hold down the fort with bar food and great drinks. And when it comes to quick service, the resort isn’t playing around, either. Roaring Fork is consistently good, serving up creative, quality eats that guests (and I!!) love. And breakfast… is awesome! Roaring Fork Sign Specialty waffles are one of the main draws for breakfast at Roaring Fork, and currently the returning Loaded Mickey-Shaped Waffles are killin’ it. We loved them and all the tasty flavor combinations we could enjoy with the many toppings that come with them, including Strawberry Sauce, Chocolate Chips, Bananas Foster Sauce, Caramel Sauce, Chocolate Syrup, and Whipped Cream! Mickey Waffles with Strawberry Sauce and Chocolate Sauce But with several other tantalizing options on the menu, I wanted to get back to Roaring Fork ASAP! Roaring Fork Breakfast Menu Roaring Fork Kids’ Breakfast Menu I went with two dissimilar items: Chicken and Waffles (because chicken and waffles) and Breakfast Flatbread. These aren’t necessarily new, but both provide two important elements for the most important meal of the day: protein for long-lasting, park-blasting fuel and carbohydrates for a burst of quick energy. Also they’re both pretty good choices — but one is BY FAR the winner for me! Chicken and Waffles and Breakfast Flatbread.. Chicken and Waffles is a common find in Disney World — from Chef Art Smith’s killer version of it over at Homecomin’ in Disney Springs to the sadly lacking version at Ale and Compass in Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. So I wasn’t sure what to expect from Roaring Fork Turns out…Roaring Fork crafts a truly exceptional version. (Also: how photogenic is this resort, right?!) Chicken and Waffles The plate begins with mini Mickey Waffles, so you know it’s gonna be good. Chicken and Waffles The chicken here is flavorful, crunchy chicken tenders — and they. are. awesome. So much flavor in the breading, including prominent black pepper. These are not your average Disney chicken tenders; they’re a step above for sure. Chicken and Waffles Accompaniments include simple maple syrup, perfect for adding sweetness to savory chicken. (If you want to see this syrup in action on those waffle, check out DFB’s Instagram!) Chicken and Waffles But the other accompaniment is Pecan Butter — and it’s great. It’s rich and delightfully nutty. But I’d recommend using the pecan butter only on your waffles. It tastes a little weird with the chicken. Chicken and Waffles Roaring Fork’s Breakfast Flatbread has all the elements of breakfast — and then some! Breakfast Flatbread The flatbread includes great toppings like Sausage Gravy, Pit Ham, Western-style Eggs, and Cheddar Cheese. Breakfast Flatbread The flatbread is great — crunchy and sturdy enough to handle the weighty ingredients. The Pit Ham is salty and briny and delicious, and it goes naturally well with the eggs, cheese, and tiny diced peppers. Breakfast Flatbread For picky eaters, this might have a little too much going on, but if you’re into the elements of breakfast and the ease of a flatbread — dig in! Yup, Roaring Fork breakfast is great. If you’re staying at Wilderness Lodge, make some time to enjoy breakfast here, even if it’s bringing some take-out back to your room as you get ready for your day. Not staying at Wilderness Lodge? It’s time to see what Disneyland’s Rancho del Zocalo has stirred up for the Get Your Ears On celebration that’s in full swing at Disneyland Resort! Our Disneyland correspondent Heather (hola, @DiningInDisney) was all over this one: Frozen Strawberry Horchata. Sounds refreshing, right? Frozen Strawberry Horchata This is a delicious sweet drink that, while a lovely shade of pink, really didn’t carry a lot of strawberry flavor, Heather reports. On the other hand, if you’re a fan of horchata — the creamy Mexican specialty that’s typically a combination of rice, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon — you’ll love this! Frozen Strawberry Horchata Signage indicates the Frozen Strawberry Horchata comes with whipped cream and dehydrated strawberry, but the cast member who served Heather went to town with the toppings! Delightfully so! But just be aware yours might look different depending on who’s behind the counter. If you find yourself with a hankerin’ for vittles in Disneyland’s Critter Country, head on over to Hungry Bear Restaurant! This counter service spot serves up tasty sandwiches, satisfying sides, and — right now — a special Valentine’s Day treat! Hungry Bear Restaurant Our Disneyland correspondent Heather (howdy, @DiningInDisney!) stopped in to try a couple of sandwiches and a Valentine’s funnel cake! The spread at Hungry Bear! The Crispy Fish Sandwich lives up to its name with a truly crispy, crunchy (albeit slightly dried out) piece of fish served on a soft golden bun with lemon-citrus mayo, lettuce, and fries and slaw on the side! Crispy Fish Sandwich The lemon-citrus mayo is the real differentiating factor here. It’s definitely got a citrus kick and a little spice. It’s a great partner with the fish. Crispy Fish Sandwich Messy Melvin’s Vegan Specialty Burger is served on a golden brown ciabatta roll that’s almost able to handle the fillings. On our last visit to try this, the bun was distractingly stale. This time it was slightly better but still… it’s hard to pick up a vegan burger to eat it. They’re typically softer and thus squeeze out the side easily. That’s the case here. Messy Melvin’s Vegan Specialty Burger But the stewed vegetables on top are delicious. The vegan patty is flavorful, too, making this sandwich a must for vegans and vegetarians and something anyone should consider trying! If only the bun was better! Messy Melvin’s Vegan Specialty Burger Heather opted to get an order of Onion Rings, too! If you’re getting hungry just looking at these, you’re not the only one! Crunchy, onion-y, and huge! These are one of our favorite Disneyland go-to snacks. Onion Rings Hungry Bear also has a Valentine’s Day treat that’s under the umbrella of the Get Your Ears On celebration that’s taken over Disneyland Resort! It’s a Honey-to-Love Funnel Cake. Honey to Love Funnel Cake This is a honey and cream funnel cake topped with whipped cream, edible flowers, and cinnamon sprinkles — which are actually pulverized Red Hots! Spicy, baby! Honey to Love Funnel Cake Heather enjoyed this way more than she expected to, and we can see why! The spicy cinnamon dust combined with the creamy honey drizzle is a great combination of contrasts! Honey to Love Funnel Cake Hungry Bear is such a sleeper hit in the realm of Disneyland quick service, and we love stopping in to see what’s on the menu. Disney California Adventure Park’s Pacific Wharf Cafe is ready to Get Your Ears On with a Cookies ‘n’ Cream Bread Pudding shaped like Mickey Mouse! Cookies ‘n’ Cream Bread Pudding This is a sight to behold with tons of textured bread pudding, lots of dark cookies ‘n’ cream pieces, and a nice dollop of whipped cream! Cookies ‘n’ Cream Bread Pudding When viewed from above, it’s a not-so-hidden Mickey with two ears that are also bread pudding. Unfortunately those ears didn’t have a ton of flavor. In this weekend edition of Disney Doodles, artist Evan Peltier imagines what Rapunzel would do if she could visit Walt Disney World Resort. According to him, art-loving Rapunzel would likely head to a place that at this time of year, would challenge her artistic talents – like the Epcot International Festival of the Arts. Get Your Ears On – A Mickey and Minnie Celebration invites you to the biggest celebration of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in Disneyland history! Today, the popular “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade” returns to Disneyland park. Mickey and his drum corps kick off a whimsical, musical procession of Disney characters. Goofy tows a larger-than-life pull-toy, inspired by the classic and nostalgic Mickey pull toys, and Chip ‘n’ Dale arrive with a giant celebration cake. OK, maybe not an invasion, but we found this fun new light up alien key chain in the park! ooohhh! A Light Up Key Chain!! And for all the popcorn bucket collectors out there who missed the Alien Popcorn Bucket last summer when Toy Story Land opened, it’s back! This time we spotted it in the new Pixar Place Bakery…Jack Jack’s Num Nums AND Alien Popcorn Buckets in one place! These green guys were also at all of the Hollywood Boulevard Popcorn Carts. There’s a lot going on in Hollywood Studios! We collected all of the construction updates in one place. Before you even get in the park there’s a lot of construction to see between the new bus stations and Skyliner station. Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station There’s a Skyliner gondola in the station again! This gondola looks like it is more operational than the gondola we saw in the station last fall. Learn more about this new transportation option coming to Disney World this fall here. Disney World Skyliner Construction Progress There’s some progress on the station as well as the appearance of a gondola. This station looks a little bit more complete on each park visit. We can’t wait to take a ride in it this fall. Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station Hollywood Studios Bus Station and Entrance Construction Progress We see some bus number signs on the new bus stations being built for the park as well as the distinctive Hollywood Studios architectural styling. This new structure is close to the area that the parking lots trams used to do drop offs. It’s too early to tell what this is yet, and there haven’t been any announcements so far about this new structure. Hollywood Studios Entrance Structure Now, into the park we go… Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Construction Progress In what has become an attraction in the park in its own way, a peek over the Toy Story Land wall, lets us see there is a “77” printed on a sign in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The first Star Wars movie was released in 1977, so perhaps this is acknowledging the year it all started “in a Galaxy Far Far Away”. After eating our way around Epcot last week, it was time to re-visit the Magic Kingdom this week to see what’s new! Hello from the Magic Kingdom! We found some rarely-seen characters, new sweet treats, some menu changes, and bunch of new merchandise. But first, look at who we met! What’s New on Magic Kingdom’s Main Street, U.S.A. As part of the Mickey and Minnie Celebration we’ll be treated to visits from rarely-seen in-the-parks characters. On the day we were there we spotted Remy and Emile from Ratatouille, and we’ve seen Nick and Judy from Zootopia as well as Phineas and Ferb on past visits. Remy and Emile say “Bonjour” to Magic Kingdom Guests A cast member we spoke with did give a head’s up that the lines are unusually long this time of year for these character Meet and Greets, so if you’re waiting to meet some of these characters bring patience! We do a lot of fun stuff here at the Disney Parks Blog, but some projects get us SUPER excited – and “Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade” has been one of those projects. It’s SO good that we can’t stop creating content around it. Today, we are so excited to celebrate the triumphant return of Maleficent to Disney’s Festival of Fantasy parade, we want to revisit all the fun we’ve had showcasing the parade throughout the last four years. Disney Doodles – In our Disney Doodle series, different Disney artists take turns imagining what different Disney characters would do or see first if they had the chance to visit a Disney Park. In this Doodle, artist Ashley Taylor envisions what Esmeralda from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” would do if she had the chance to visit Magic Kingdom Park. In the film, we meet Esmeralda as she dances at the city’s Festival of Fools, a day of fun, celebration and merriment for the townsfolk. So it’s only natural that Esmeralda would want to catch the park’s “Festival of Fantasy Parade.” Wallpaper – When “Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade” first debuted at Magic Kingdom Park, we celebrated its arrival with a series of downloadable wallpapers. This first design is inspired by Maleficent. Her Steampunk-style and wicked smile come shining through, this float stretches 53 feet in length and 26 feet tall with a prickly spinning wheel dead center of the float. This design is inspired by the Peter Pan float from the parade. Straight from Never Land come Peter Pan and Wendy soaring high aboard the famous Jolly Roger pirate ship complete with smoke effects and special surprises. A rainbow arch shines over Skull Rock and Tinker Bell nestled among giant flowers, while Captain Hook takes center stage on a swinging anchor. “Newsies”-inspired Lost Boys kick up their heels to high-energy choreography. The last design hails from the Finale float with Mickey’s Airship. Sassy Bubble Girls with cotton-candy-like hair celebrating Storybook Circus in New Fantasyland. One week ago today, the 2019 Epcot Festival of the Arts kicked off in Disney World! This third annual celebration of the Culinary, Visual, and Performing Arts provides artistic tastes, sounds, and sights to guests throughout the park. 2019 Festival of the Arts Passport And today we’re sharing some very special sights around World Showcase, where artists have painted beloved Disney characters in various country Pavilions! France Pavilion Here’s the thing: the beautiful paintings — here in honor of the Festival of the Arts — are rather subtle. American Adventure Pavilion So you have to keep your eyes peeled for pals! The American Adventure Pavilion See what I mean ? If you care to take more of a tour with us, keep scrolling! Germany Pavilion You’ll spot Pascal in a few places… notice he’s also managed to snag some Caramel Corn at Karamell-Küche! Germany Pavilion Pascal enjoying Caramel Corn And look who… it’s ABU! Morocco Pavilion And Mushu, too (with Cri-Kee)! China Pavilion China Pavilion Looks like Lumiere has found a kindred spirit… France Pavilion And next “door” in the United Kingdom, you’ll find Skippy from Robin Hood. Great storytelling is at the heart of everything we do at Disney, and in celebrating the triumphant return of Maleficent to Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade, we want to take a quick look back to remind readers of the creative inspiration behind the making of the float with the accompanying story: Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade is a celebration of all beloved Disney stories you will find in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom Park. The procession features nearly 100 performers and Disney characters, with floats specifically telling the stories of “Tangled,” “Peter Pan,” “Brave,” “Sleeping Beauty” and many more. Guests can meet Princess Aurora (“Sleeping Beauty”) in Fantasyland’s most beloved restaurant, Cinderella’s Royal Table; so what better way to celebrate that than to have Maleficent, in her villainous dragon form – along with her raven helpers; her nemesis Prince Phillip; and Good Fairies Flora, Fauna and Merryweather – rolling down Main Street U.S.A. When Maleficent debuted in 2014, we sat down with Parade Designer Richard Improta from Disney Parks Live Entertainment, along with Tony Award-winning Production Designer Michael Curry, to discuss the inspiration behind this show-stopping float and their collaboration that brought Maleficent to epic life on the street.
