  1. Recently we dared you to experience a Day of Thrills at Walt Disney World Resort. If the idea of tackling all four parks in one day made your head spin like a teacup, we have the perfect thrilling alternative. Keep it classy with the original park, Magic Kingdom, as you slay the Mountain Challenge. It combines your love of classic Magic Kingdom attractions with the thrills they have to offer. From blasting off on Space Mountain, to racing through the diamond mine on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, to swooping through a haunted gold mine on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad… this challenge has more altitude, less attitude. Finish it off with a splash, on a log-flume adventure ending in a 5-story splashdown into Briar Patch on Splash Mountain! All those drops, turns, and thrills definitely put me in my #HappyPlace at Magic Kingdom. How has this Mountain Challenge peaked your interest? View the full article

  3. Since opening on May 31, visitors to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland park have had the opportunity to step inside the largest single-themed land in Disney Parks history. Guests are raving about many immersive experiences to explore on the remote planet of Batuu, including blasting across the galaxy aboard Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run – already one of the Disneyland Resort’s top-rated attractions. Earlier this week, we welcomed the one millionth member of Hondo Ohnaka’s flight crew to take the controls of the Millennium Falcon! Disney cast members who helped make the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge a success were on hand to welcome the Ridgeway family from Ocean Springs, Miss. Jonathan Ridgeway, 8, climbed aboard the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy” along with mom Becky, dad Roger and brother Logan, 4. The family spent some time in the ship’s main hold and lounge, where they sat at the famous Dejarik table and met a surprise guest, Chewbacca. Then, Jonathan settled into the cockpit as a co-pilot of the Falcon. Afterwards, the family was treated to Blue and Green Milk for a celebratory toast! Let’s take a look: Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run combines immersive storytelling with interactive gameplay and makes you the protagonist of your own Star Wars adventure! When it’s time for the mission to begin, you’ll be assigned one of three critical roles: Pilots, Gunners and Flight Engineers. It’s up to you and your fellow passengers to smuggle goods while avoiding any unnecessary entanglements. If you’ve ever wished to step aboard the Falcon in all her ramshackle glory, now is your chance! Take control of the Falcon yourself at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge! View the full article

  6. Whether it’s cruising around the Caribbean or soaking up the sun on Disney Castaway Cay, Cruise Critic Members agree that Disney Cruise Line is number one. I’m excited to share with you that Cruise Critic announced the results of this year’s Cruiser’s Choice Destination awards and Disney Cruise Line ranked as the top cruise line across three categories: “Top Cruise Line in the Eastern Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda,” “Top Cruise Line in the Western Caribbean and Riviera Maya” and, for the fourth consecutive year, “Top Cruise Line Private Island.” The Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards are selected based on thousands of first-hand reviews posted to the Cruise Critic website over the past year. Cruise Critic offers one of the largest online cruise communities with more than 350,000 cruise reviews. Colleen McDaniel, Editor-in-Chief of Cruise Critic, shared with us that Cruise Critic Members consistently tell them that a Disney cruise is a vacation for all ages. These awards really speak volumes about the high level of satisfaction our guests feel after sailing with Disney. Our thousands of Cast and Crew Members work to make each guest feel like a VIP from the moment they’re welcomed aboard. In the words of our Disney Cruise Line President Jeff Vahle, “It’s our dedicated officers and crew members who deliver the Disney difference again and again.” The fun definitely doesn’t stop onboard our ships. Disney Castaway Cay is a 1,000-acre private island in the Bahamas with turquoise waters, white-sand beaches and swaying palm trees that is exclusive to Disney Cruise Line guests. One Cruise Critic member described the island as “the best place on earth with plenty to do for all ages.” Another shared, “We had the time of our lives. The children were well entertained and there was a separate area for adults to relax and enjoy.” I couldn’t agree more with the Cruise Critic community. I don’t know about you, but this all makes me want to be sailing onboard or lounging on a beach chair at Castaway Cay right about now. Excuse me while I go plan my next Disney Cruise Line vacation! Hope to see you onboard. View the full article

  8. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is an immersive experience that transports guests to the Outer Rim planet of Batuu. Building Batuu meant doing so from the ground up and was no easy task. But with more than 20 years of onsite construction management experience and an almost ten year Walt Disney Imagineering career, Kristina Dewberry, Construction Manager for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort, was a natural fit for the job! We’re thrilled to share her story and role as part of the construction team responsible for bringing the land to life in this week’s installment of #WomenBehindtheMagic! In her role at Disneyland Resort, Kristina manages construction site logistics and ensures the operational safety and efficiency of sites. From working on guest favorite attractions like Matterhorn Bobsleds to building Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, and also her most recent project Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, she helps build destinations that invoke magical experiences and memories. Kristina’s journey began in a galaxy not so far away, as she grew up loving all things Star Wars from a young age. As a child, she recalls that girls were told that math and handiwork were for boys, but Kristina didn’t let that stop her when it came to her affinity for the historically male-dominated field of construction. Instead, she drew inspiration from iconic Princess Leia that she shouldn’t let anyone stop her from doing what she loved. Growing up, Kristina spent a lot of time helping her dad with home projects and even had her own tool belt! In fact, it was an early family construction project of building a shed in their backyard that led her to fall in love with construction. “My brother and I each got a tool belt, a pouch full of nails and a measuring tape. Dad taught us how to measure twice, cut once, Mom taught us the fine art of painting and my little sister brought us lemonade,” she shared. “Looking back, it was the tiniest little shed, but it lasted for years and it gave us a sense of pride that we all made it together.” In her teenage years, she had the opportunity to take her skills outside of her own home and helped re-roof neighbors’ houses because she always loved building things that would enhance people’s lives. From there, Kristina knew that she wanted to spend her time on job sites, and obtained several degrees in construction management including an associate’s degree from Cincinnati State Technical and a Bachelor of Science from Northern Kentucky University. Now, she spends her days working on various Disney sites and enjoys that her role encourages her to be a problem solver and provides the opportunity to bring people together from different parts of a project, and even around the world. On any given day, Kristina leads tasks that can range from managing safety training protocol to handling construction material deliveries, and even coordinating the site removal of construction debris. But when it comes to what skills she finds helpful, Kristina says that keeping a drive and ambition are necessary to growing her own skillset and helps teams continue to challenge themselves. “If you hear someone – or yourself – say ‘that’s the way we’ve always done it,’ you should take a step back,” she explains. “You shouldn’t be doing things the exact same way you did a year ago, but be taking in new technology and adding to your skillset.” And of course, Kristina aims to always keep up a positive attitude and sense of humor. Construction sites can be stressful, but with the help of her “Boss Mode” music playlist, full of empowering and upbeat tunes, she strives to always find the fun in her work and encourages her team to follow suit. “Keeping joy in your heart and moving forward with each new challenge is much easier when you have a twinkle in your eye,” she notes. For a lifelong Star Wars fan like Kristina, keeping that joy wasn’t hard when going to work meant going to create the historic land that is Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. “To be asked to join the team creating this land really struck me as an epic adventure,” she says. “Walking through the land and watching the project grow from the first day to now being a finished land, ready for guests, is an incredible feeling.” Being able to say “wow, look at what we’ve been able to create,” is awe-inspiring to her. As a woman in construction, Kristina wants other women to know that this career path is absolutely within their grasp. “There is an important place for women in the construction industry that extends beyond simply swinging a hammer,” she says. “A lot of women don’t even consider construction because they think it’s not within their reach,” she says, but notes that with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, she’s worked with more women than ever before. “It’s really enlightening to see that.” Kristina’s favorite piece of wisdom she would impart on anyone who may be considering a career in construction is a motto she keeps on the wall in her own kitchen. “It’ll cost nothing to dream, and everything not to,” she shares. “If you see anything in the construction field that you find interesting, you owe it to yourself to find out more. Find an ally, someone to help you get started on your search. Construction may not be for you – but it just might be the most rewarding work you’ll ever do.” Guests can see Kristina’s work at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, now open at Disneyland Resort. And there is even more to look forward to with the upcoming opening on August 29 at Walt Disney World Resort! Stay tuned as we look forward to sharing more stories of the amazing #WomenBehindtheMagic with you over the coming months! View the full article

Today, we’re going in even closer so you can “Meet our Pride” of lions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and hear more from Lori, one of our animal care experts, who works with her team to study every facet of the lions’ behavior. You can visit the lions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with your friends and family and learn more about this incredible species. Theme park admission is required. Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog for more updates about our lions and “The Lion King” “Protect the Pride” campaign. View the full article
  10. From time to time I will be doing some Plein Air painting (from the field), from a new, inspiring location in the Disney Parks. I will share my sketches and experiences here on the blog each time. Today, I continue my “Sketches from the Park” series as I started off with an early morning in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom Park. This particular morning reminds me of my childhood. I have always been inspired by Tomorrowland since coming to the parks on summer vacation as a kid with my family. There were so many great memories of driving on the Tomorrowland Speedway with Space Mountain towering in the distance. So, I sat down to take it all in once again and do a quick sketch in pen and ink, and a little watercolor in my travel-sized sketchbook. After doing a quick sketch in pen right on the watercolor paper, I started to add some color. I don’t get too literal with the colors, it’s more about how it feels to me. Space Mountain felt like cool blue and purple hues so that is what I used. I just put down enough watercolor to give it a little life, because it is meant to be a quick sketch after all. After about 30 minutes I was happy with my sketch and I packed up my supplies and walked over to see one of my favorite classic attractions, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. It was a pretty nice way to start off a summer morning in Tomorrowland! I hope you enjoy the art and keep your eye on the Disney Parks Blog for my next post from a new location in our “Sketches from the Park” series. See ya next time! View the full article

  15. Today we commemorate 64 years since the opening day of Disneyland with festivities that included the “Happiest March on Earth” down Main Street, U.S.A. Disneyland Resort Ambassadors were joined by the Dapper Dans, the world-famous Disneyland Band and a cast of Disney characters to lead guests in a round of “Happy Birthday to You” in celebration of this happiest place. As part of the tribute to opening day, a recording of Walt Disney’s speech was played again: “To all who come to this happy place, welcome! Disneyland is your land. Here, age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America, with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” The July 17 festivities are only part of the fun this summer. Starting tomorrow for a limited time, guests may see Mickey Mouse and his friends join the Disneyland Band for performances of “Mickey and Friends Band-Tastic Cavalcade” at Disneyland park. Beginning Aug. 2, the beloved “Main Street Electrical Parade” returns to Disneyland for a limited-time, bringing guests of multiple generations a sense of wonder, joy and – for some – warm nostalgia. This popular nighttime parade will travel down Main Street, U.S.A., each night through Sept. 30. 18. Did you know that Walt Disney World Resort is a popular field trip destination for student groups? Last week NBA basketball star Aaron Gordon took part in an innovative Disney Youth Education Series program at Magic Kingdom Park alongside 30 students from his Orlando foundation. The program, “Energy and Waves Physics Lab” is designed to give students a look at the “science behind the magic” and demonstrate how energy, sound and light are used through the various technology at Fantasyland, the Haunted Mansion and Mickey’s PhilharMagic. Aaron’s favorite part of the day? Going behind the scenes at the Haunted Mansion! The students visited Walt Disney World Resort as part of Gordon’s summer academy, CodeOrlando, which gives students a chance to explore careers in technology and coding fields. Taking the students to Walt Disney World Resort was a great way to deepen their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math, but in a magical and entertaining environment. From the looks on their smiling faces, education has probably never been more fun. Check out our video to see highlights from the day! 19. Recently we shared a deep discount on Walt Disney World Annual Passes for Sam’s Club members, and dozens of readers and followers commented that they were able to save $260+ per AP with that money-saving tip. It now appears the discounted APs from Sam’s are no longer available — but the savings aren’t entirely over! Sam’s Club Discount In fact, the DFB team has uncovered not one but TWO paths to discounted tickets — and one is a little-known employment perk you might already have access to! Let’s see how you can save some money! Sam’s Club Discount Pricing We’ll start with Sam’s Club, which offered savings with their discounted Platinum and Platinum Plus Annual Passes over the past couple of weeks. At present, Sam’s is offering discounted prices on tickets to Disney’s water parks, After Hours events (including Villains), the Summer One World promo, and Florida Resident 3-4 day passes! Discounts at Sam’s Club We logged in to see the savings for Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, which differ depending on whether you purchase a One Day Water Park Ticket OR the same ticket with Blockout Dates. A standard ticket (with blockout dates, which are not specified in the listing) offers a savings of about $9 per ticket. The ticket without blockout dates is just over $11 savings per ticket. Water Park Discounts Much like tickets purchased directly from Disney, Sam’s Club also offers a base 4-day Disney Theme Park Ticket with add-ons, like Park-Hopper, Park-Hopper Plus, and Flexible Date. Savings on the base 4-day ticket are $43.87 per ticket. Savings with Park-Hopper are $48.01, Park-Hopper Plus are $47.01, and Flexible Dates are $37.34. (Click here to learn more about Flexible Dates pricing.) Theme Park Ticket Discounts Though the savings may be small for one person (barely washing out the $45 Sam’s Club membership fee), for a family of 2+, the savings could be significant. Sam’s Club discount tickets are also available for Disney Villains After Hours. (Learn more about this event here!) Savings for this hard ticketed event are nearly $20 cheaper. Animal Kingdom After Hours and Magic Kingdom After Hours are also available for a discount of $20-$22. (Only select nights available for these events.) Villains After Hours Pricing Additionally, Florida Residents can purchase 3-day or 4-day Park tickets for savings of $9-$10. And the Summer One World ticket that already packed in some savings can be purchased for an additional savings of about $35-$40 (depending on child and adult pricing). (See more about the specific Summer One World promo here.) Tickets at Work Discount Pricing Tickets at Work is a discount program available through 40,000 corporate employers and roughly 60 million users (learn more about Tickets at Work here) — and it’s worth asking your human resources rep to find out if your company participates. Our Insta-pal and reporter extraordinaire @valerieamarino shared these screenshots of discounts currently available via Tickets at Work. (Special thanks to @Tom_Bricker of DisneyTouristBlog.com for looping her in on this initially, too!) Each item lists possible percentage savings to give you a rough idea of how much you can keep in your wallet. Tickets at Work Discounts Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, for example, works out to $8+ savings per ticket. Tickets at Work Discounts Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party offers an even larger savings — about $11 per ticket. Tickets at Work Discounts And finally: Annual Passes. The Platinum Pass has a potential savings of over $325, while the Platinum Plus Pass is $332+ off. Tickets at Work Discounts Note that these discounts are subject to change — or go away entirely — at any time. So if you’re interested, you should lock them in. While these savings may not take all of the sting out of Disney’s current pricing models, they may help make your trips and participation in special events more feasible. And that’s a little bit more magical! Have you purchased tickets for a discount? Got a hot tip for us? Tell us about it in the comments! 24. We celebrated the grand opening of Gran Destino Tower at Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort last week, and in the process we brought you a photo tour of the Tower’s standard hotel rooms and lobby, a first look at the Tower’s two Lounges — Barcelona Lounge and Dahlia Lounge — and shared our very first review of the Tower’s rooftop table service restaurant, Toledo — Tapas, Steak, & Seafood. Gran Destino Tower But the tour of Gran Destino Tower isn’t over! Here we’re taking a photo tour of a Deluxe Suite with Club Access and the Chronos Club, a lounge space dedicated to guests staying in Club Access rooms (suites and standard — more on this below!). The Deluxe Suite we toured sleeps up to four adults with a combination of one king size bed and one queen-size pull-out sofa. The style of the Suite is reserved by Disney standards but stylish with pops of red and orange and a Destino mash-up of materials. Gran Destino Deluxe Suite – Club Access The living space features that aforementioned couch — smart in taupe — two end tables with lamps, a metal and stone coffee table, and two armchairs. A foursome of mirrors reflect light in the space, and taupe wallpaper features a few Hidden Mickeys. (See if you can spot one below!) Deluxe Suite – Club Access To the right upon entering the living space is a set-up with amenities such as a Keurig coffee maker with pods and mugs, an ice bucket with glasses, and, below the counter, a mini-fridge. There are two shelves for storage above this counter space. This abuts a large armoire for storage. Amenities Set-Up Across from the couch is a console table and a wall-mounted, personalized smart TV. This TV is enabled with new-to-Disney technology that allows guests to connect their smart devices to the TV and to access Disney movies, shows, and even bedtime stories on-demand. You can see the entrance to the bedroom to the left of the console. Personalized Smart TV Before we tour the bedroom, however, notice that there’s a table and a pair of chairs set up in front of the large picture window. Seating Area The bedroom in the Deluxe Suite is accessed through a sliding barn door. A king bed dominates the room and is kept company by two side tables. Deluxe Suite Bedroom Lamps in Gran Destino Tower feature a bell design pulled from the Tower’s inspiration, a Salvador Dali/Walt Disney project called Destino that prominently featured a bell with the figure of a woman artistically incorporated into it. These lamps also have two plugs and two USB ports for nighttime charging. Close Up of Lamp in Gran Destino Tower Guest Rooms Bedding in the Deluxe Suite is simple: just a white duvet cover with a subtle white design and several pillows. But the headboards feature carved wood and a padded burnt orange piece for comfort. Deluxe Suite Bedroom A closet in the bedroom contains robes, extra bedding, and an iron and ironing board. Closet The orientation of the bed maximizes the view (don’t worry — there are curtains out of view to the left). Another smart TV hangs on the wall just outside the bathroom, quite a bit off-center from the bed. Seems Disney is prioritizing the view for you! Television and Views The bathroom connected to the bedroom includes double sinks, under-sink storage, and H20 brand products. Deluxe Suite Bathroom in Bedroom The water closet can be concealed by a pocket door, and the glass-walled shower is to the right when you enter. Water Closet One downfall of the Deluxe Suite: they provide a scale. Even if you’re staying in the Tower for work, those Disney calories don’t count, and this just seems like a cruel trick. Scale There’s a second bathroom in the Deluxe Suite. It’s to the immediate right when you enter the suite. It’s a two-piece bathroom, so you’ve got a toilet and a sink. Entry Bathroom This is nicely appointed (we love the tile!) and helpful if you’ve got a suite full of folks trying to get ready every day. Entry Bathroom Overall, the Deluxe Suite is a comfortable, well-designed space that would work for business or leisure travelers. But this is Club Access, which means you’re not just getting a place to lay your head; you’re getting the Chronos Club. Chronos Club Photo Tour Chronos Club The Chronos Club is Gran Destino Tower’s club access lounge. Unlike Deluxe Resorts with Club Level lounges, Chronos has dropped the “level.” That’s because at Gran Destino, Club Access rooms are located throughout the Tower, not concentrated on one floor. Chronos Club The Chronos Club is inspired, like many things in Gran Destino Tower, by the short film Destino that was the product of a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali. In the film (as in the myth), Chronos personifies time, and he falls in love with a mortal named Dahlia. (You can see Dahlia’s imprint all over Dahlia Lounge on the Tower’s 15th floor.) Chronos Club The Chronos Club is a stylish spot that incorporates many of the same touches seen elsewhere in the Tower. These large, sparkly pendants bring light and glamour to the space. Chronos Club Metal lanterns, clay vases, and metal and glass tables add some edge, while padded seating in shades of blue and brown add some softness. Chronos Club And there are several types of seating available in Chonos Club. Large sofas, like these curved ones, surround coffee tables. On this table, a box contains a deck of playing cards. Chronos Club No matter where you kick up your heels and kill some time in Chronos Club, you’ll be treated to views of Walt Disney World. Below, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is just out of view to the right. Chronos Club If you’re partaking in the food and drinks provided in Chronos Club, there are proper tables and chairs, too. Chronos Club This looks like an awesome place to gather, share stories, and relax. Cast members told us the intention was to create the feel of a living room, and it really does feel that comfortable. Chronos Club Other notable design features include an energetic dropped ceiling that seems, almost, to mimic a deconstructed clock with spokes that resemble the hands. While this feature is stationary, the way it’s designed seems to give it movement. Chronos Club Metal accents that vaguely resemble the dandelions celebrated in Destino float along one wall — along with a giant hidden Mickey! Chronos Club And like all of the other spaces we’ve covered at Gran Destino Tower, Chronos Club deftly mixes materials and patterns in ways that most of us probably wouldn’t consider. But they work! Chronos Club In addition to the playing cards we mentioned above, Chronos Club also provides this bank of magazines and newspapers (like real paper newspapers that’ll leave black smudges on your fingertips) and, on another table, a wood and metal tic-tac-toe board. Clearly Chronos knows how to spend some time. Chronos Club Here at DFB, we like to spend our time eating, so let’s see how Club Access patrons will fill their bellies and whet their whistles. There are several stations in the Club, all set in the back left corner of the space. Chronos Club Bottled and canned non-alcoholic beverages are available in a refrigerator, and a machine for dispensing espresso and hot water is available, too. Chronos Club Chronos Club Standard coffee options are also on hand (decaf and regular), as are ice-cold water and packets for tea. Chronos Club The tea of choice here is Twinings, and there’s a decent variety. Chronos Club Most importantly, there are Mickey-shaped sugar cubes. Fabulous! Mickey Sugar Cubes Cast members told us that alcoholic beverages will be available for patrons, too, including wine and beer. Cocktails are also expected, but they weren’t sure which ones they would be. Food options run the gamut from sweet and indulgent to healthy and practical. Some items are packaged to take along with you, while others are more likely to be enjoyed in Chronos Club or taken to the guest’s room. Chronos Club Food items will be replenished and changed out depending on the time of day, as is the case in other Club Level lounges. Breakfast will be grab-and-go with pastries, primarily. Lunch and dinner hours will see light bites. Chronos Club Fresh food items include Yogurt-Cucumber Dip and Curry Lentil Hummus with veggies. Chronos Club These crostini with SunButter, banana slices, honey, and sunflower seeds are a fun snack for guests of all ages. Chronos Club Fresh fruit is perfect to snag on your way out the door in the morning. Chronos Club Fun, snackable options include trail mix and Goldfish (yes, Goldfish crackers at Walt Disney World! You can also find them atop the Mac and Cheese at Garden Grill, but now we’re just getting weird about how much we know about Goldfish.). Chronos Club Chronos Club House Potato Chips are an irresistible option. Quick question: is it frowned up to take the whole bowl back to your table? What would Chronos do…? Chronos Club Chronos knows time is fleeting, so he says “eat more cookies.” (We made that up, but it’s still solid advice.) Chronos Club Packaged snacks included three varieties of Kind Bars, ready for your Park bag or a stroll to the convention center downstairs. Chronos Club And when you must have candy, Chronos delivers. Hard candies, Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares, and caramels are ripe for the picking. Chronos Club As we mentioned, food items will change out throughout the day and from day-to-day, so don’t be surprised to find different offerings during your stay. But a Club Access experience is all about that comfort — snacks when you need ’em, a relaxing spot to kick back, and — in this case — terrific views to drink in any time of day. Gran Destino Tower has four categories of Club Access rooms: Standard View – Club Access, Deluxe Suite – Club Access, One Bedroom Suite – Club Access, and Presidential Suite – Club Access. As of press time, prices range from a starting price of $330 for the Standard to $1382 for the Presidential Suite. To give you a little perspective, a Standard View room in the Tower without Club Access is around $234 depending on the date and other mystery Disney considerations. So if you think Club Access might be for you, consider what you get for your investment. And as Chronos would likely tell you (or not, we don’t know him), time is short, get a second helping of chips. Want to know everything about Gran Destino Tower? In our WE’RE LIVE post we shared links to ALL of our coverage — check it out! Have you tried Club Access resort stays in the past? Share your experiences in the comments below!
