  4. “Epcot Forever,” an all-new nighttime spectacular that takes guests on a journey through the years and into the future, opens October 1, 2019, as part of the transformation of Epcot. The show will bring World Showcase Lagoon to life with a spark of imagination that quickly grows into an epic spectacle of fireworks, lighting, lasers, special effects kites, and an incredible musical score. In the words of Disney Parks Live Entertainment show director Alan Bruun, “Music is the soul of the show, because music has been the soul of Epcot ever since it began.” From “Magic Journeys” and “Tomorrow’s Child” to “Listen to the Land” and “One Little Spark,” “Epcot Forever” features classic Epcot themes produced in fresh new arrangements. The music was recorded by the legendary London Symphony Orchestra at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios, with vocals performed by a talented choir of singers from across Central Florida. Here’s a look behind the scenes at how the music for “Epcot Forever” came together. The Disney Parks Live Entertainment team is putting the finishing touches on the show to get ready for opening night, with everyone from audio engineers to special effects designers working around the clock to get everything just right. 6. We’ve watched the towers go up, the dummy gondolas fly by, the cabins with character head out on the line, and now — finally! — it’s time for us to take our FIRST FLIGHT aboard the Disney Skyliner! Skyliner over Riviera Resort The Skyliner, as you’ll recall, is a gondola system at Walt Disney World that connects two theme parks and four Resort hotels. And thanks to a DFB pal, we got a chance to see it from the sky! Segmented into separate lines, the Skyliner’s hub is at Caribbean Beach Resort. But our journey started at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where the Skyliner station at the Park’s main entrance has been coming to fruition for well over a year! Click here to check out DFB’s Skyliner Pro Tips! Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station Signage has been up for a while at the Hollywood Studios station, but the route info is looking shiny and new! Each station has signs letting guests know where they can go from that location — and indications for when transfers are necessary. Skyliner Route Info A journey aboard the Skyliner begins in the queue, which we found to be orderly and straightforward. There are no frills here; get in line, walk forward, board your gondola. Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station Boarding the Skyliner itself is a simple process: you just step (or roll) in! Entering Skyliner Seating is on wooden benches (no seat belts). Each gondola can carry up to ten guests at a time without a stroller or wheelchair or up to six guests at a time with a stroller or wheelchair. Strollers are limited to 30″ x 48″, but they can roll on and off the gondola with a child inside — just as they can on the Monorail. No need to fold! Skyliner Interior Tinted windows help to deflect the heat of central Florida, but they’re large and provide lots of expansive views. Tinted windows on Skyliner We were, however, taken aback by the difference in quality views when riding a standard Skyliner gondola versus a character-bedecked gondola. While we’ve long been pining to ride the character gondolas, views in these are much more obstructed due to the wrap. The standard view is relatively clear (with a slight tint from the reflective window). View through standard Skyliner window Views through a character gondola look a little like this: Views from a character gondola Click here to check out DFB’s Skyliner Pro Tips! The photo above is notable for another reason: we were on a line that stopped temporarily over Hourglass Lake en route to the Art of Animation and Pop Century station. We know a lot of you have been concerned about the skyliner stopping en route. No worries, no rescue barges were required (check them out here!), but there was an announcement that indicated we’d resume travel momentarily — similar to when you get stuck temporarily on an omnimover attraction like Spaceship Earth or Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. But for all those wondering about the heat inside the Skyliner: note that while we were stopped, it got pretty warm within minutes. Temperatures in the gondolas are mitigated by cross-ventilation provided by vents on the forward and back sides of the cabin. Cross Ventilation We found that the vents provided plenty of air movement when the gondola was in motion, but we did find the Skyliner to be noticeably (and borderline uncomfortably) hot when we were stopped over the lake. Cross Ventilation Check out our FIRST LOOK at the inside of the Skyliner gondolas! Tonight we soared from Hollywood Studios to Caribbean Beach Resort, Caribbean Beach Resort to Riviera Resort, Riviera to Epcot, Epcot to Art of Animation/Pop (passing by Riviera and Caribbean Beach Resort), and then back to Hollywood Studios via Caribbean Beach Resort. View of Skyliner from the Caribbean Beach Station For the most part, the gondolas traveled at a steady speed. Again, when they slowed, it was noticeable in the way that it’s noticeable on an Omnimover ride. Disney has said the Skyliner can travel up to 11MPH, and while we couldn’t precisely gauge that, they do move at a clip! Skyliner travels up to 11MPH Another quick note based on your questions to us about this experience — if you’ve got a serious fear of heights, this experience may be daunting for you. That’s not to say you shouldn’t ride, but just be prepared. Before we show you what it’s like at each station, a few more notes: When your gondola pulls into a station, it does so at what feels like a fast speed, and when it comes to a stop, it’s surprisingly close to the cabins in front of them. Be aware of that so you and your crew don’t panic that you’re going to weave into the next one. Gondolas are fairly close together in the station And when exiting the Skyliner gondola, the cabins do have a bit of movement. You’ll want to brace yourself as you step out of the gondola so you don’t get wobbly. There are some safety notices inside the vehicle. You’ll want to remain seated, and no dancing! (Is it just us, or is that what the second icon on the left looks like?!) Your cabin number is clearly labeled so #bucketlist — you can keep track of which ones you’ve ridden in and collect ’em all. Safety info inside Skyliner If you encounter an issue in your cabin, there’s an Emergency Call Box with a button you can push to alert the cast members on the ground. Emergency Call Button And now, without further ado: let’s fly! Disney’s Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the end of one of Skyliner’s separate lines. Here you can board for a trip to Caribbean Beach Resort. At Caribbean Beach, you can change lines for Riviera/Epcot or Art of Animation/Pop Century Resorts. Hollywood Studios Skyliner Station Board your gondola at Hollywood Studios! The station at night has some cool contrasting lighting, so be sure to check that out. Hollywood Studios Skyliner at night Views as you arrive at the Hollywood Studios station from Caribbean Beach include, as one might expect, Tower of Terror and the taller structures of the Park. You can also see the general layout of the Park and its parking lots, entrance, and, well, anything that’s down there! Arriving at Hollywood Studios Station at night We took off from Hollywood Studios when the sun was starting to set and made our way to Caribbean Beach Resort (a 4-5 minute ride) at just about Golden Hour. It was… lovely. Caribbean Beach Resort Skyliner Station Caribbean Beach Skyliner station is themed to the Resort with tons of lattice (and faux lattice), shutters, and exposed beams. Caribbean Beach Resort Station The station is open-air and serves as the main hub for the Skyliner. All lines go in and out of this station. If you stay at Caribbean Beach, you’ll have Skyliner access to every place on the line. Talk about a perk! Caribbean Beach Skyliner Station Signs point you in the direction of the line you need: left for Art of Animation and Pop Century, straight ahead for Hollywood Studios, and right for Riviera Resort and Epcot. Route info at Caribbean Beach Resort Skyliner Station Skyliner line to Riviera/Epcot Skyliner line to Hollywood Studios Skyliner line to Art of Animation and Pop Century Art of Animation and Pop Century line queue Each station has a separate line for boarding wheelchairs and ECVs so be sure to look for directions (or talk to a cast member) if you need this line. The Skyliner cabins designated for wheelchairs and EVCs are off the main line and so the main line does not have to stop for loading. When a gondola carrying a wheelchair is ready to move onto the main line, it will be added to line without interrupting service for the rest of the line. Wheelchair line at Caribbean Beach Resort Skyliner Station Caribbean Beach Skyliner station also has restrooms AND a brand new Joffrey’s! Check out our first look at the NEW Joffrey’s Location and review of the special TOFFEE FLIGHT LATTE here! Joffrey’s Coffee and Tea at Caribbean Beach Caribbean Beach Skyliner Station Restroom Caribbean Beach Skyliner Station Restroom Views over Caribbean Beach Resort are colorful and lush. Caribbean Beach Resort views Caribbean Beach Resort views in the distance From Caribbean Beach Resort, we soared to Riviera Resort. This journey is incredibly short — just three minutes. But the views of the Resort are stunning! Riviera Resort Skyliner Station At present, because Riviera Resort won’t be opening until December 16, 2019, we weren’t allowed to disembark and look around. Still: we feasted on this view as we arrived at the station. Riviera Station Arrival Riviera Resort View From this vantage point, the resort makes a dramatic statement on the horizon. (And you can still peep the rooftops of Caribbean Beach Resort below, too!) Skyliner and Riviera Views You get a sense of the dramatic height upon arrival at Riviera Resort Skyliner station. And the Resort itself is really given some scale here. Riviera Station Arrival FYI — stay tuned to DFB TODAY (or join our newsletter) for a fun FIRST LOOK at the Riviera Resort (we’re on our way to a media event there NOW!) Epcot International Gateway Skyliner Station The ride from Riviera Resort to Epcot’s International Gateway was 9-10 minutes. On our way into the station, our line was “temporarily delayed” once again, but the timing was 9-10 minutes on the way out, too, when we had no delays. On the line from Riviera to Epcot is a turn station near BoardWalk Inn. This station is simply for changing the line’s direction, and guests remain in their cabins through this turn. Turn Station near BoardWalk Inn Turn Station near BoardWalk Inn The views for the flight to Epcot were pretty epic, and we can definitely see ourselves timing a ride on Skyliner to enjoy a sunset. Views en route to Epcot Skyliner Views Entering the Skyliner station at International Gateway is, again, straightforward. Note the small handicap icon on the right side of the entrance here. Epcot’s International Gateway Skyliner Station Epcot’s International Gateway Skyliner Station Epcot’s International Gateway Skyliner Station The design here definitely has a European feel, which is due to the station’s proximity to the France pavilion. The pavilion is visible from the Skyliner station, so the designs are harmonious. Epcot’s International Gateway Skyliner Station Epcot’s International Gateway Skyliner Station You can see the movement of a Skyliner gondola here. Riders definitely feel the motion of the cabins at take off and landing. Epcot’s International Gateway Skyliner Station Views toward France show the Eiffel Tower and on-going construction for La Creperie and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. Epcot’s International Gateway Skyliner Station Also on the route to and from Epcot, riders can get a bird’s eye view of the Friendship Boats! Looks like their tops could use a little scrub. Friendship Boats Art of Animation and Pop Century Skyliner Station The final stop on our Skyliner journey was the Art of Animation and Pop Century Skyliner Station at Generation Gap Bridge. They weren’t allowing riders to disembark and explore this station, so we were off and right back on. The colorful gondolas sure fit in at this station! Art of Animation and Pop Century Skyliner Station Art of Animation and Pop Century Skyliner Station And, of course, there’s safety info here as well. Art of Animation and Pop Century Skyliner Station We spotted Pua and one of Hank’s orange tentacles on these gondolas with character! Although we weren’t big fans of the character gondolas from the perspective of capturing the views, it was still fun to see them in action and close up! Art of Animation and Pop Century Skyliner Station Oh, and as a friendly reminder…in case you missed it earlier…we stopped here over Hourglass Lake in a gondola that wasn’t moving. We did not love this. Views from a stopped gondola over Hourglass Lake After visiting each of the stations, we headed back to Hollywood Studios via Caribbean Beach Resort (as is required), and overall, we found Skyliner to be a pleasant experience! Good night, Skyliner! While the cabins themselves are functional (as opposed to comfortable), the views and the efficiency are excellent. The longest ride we experienced was Epcot to Riviera (about ten minutes), but the other segments were five minutes or fewer. Transfers were relatively painless, though on very busy days a transfer may add a few minutes to your trip. Still, we enjoyed Skyliner more than we expected to. And we’ll be back throughout the week to share more views, answer your questions, and gather as much info as we can about this brand new way to travel the World. Will you be soaring the skies over Walt Disney World on the Skyliner? Still have questions? Leave us a comment below! And if your princess is between the ages of 5 and 15, Angie suggests making a reservation for Disney’s Perfectly Princess Tea at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Magical Ideas for School-aged Kids “For the school-aged Pirate or Mermaid crew, there are so many adventures to be had! I love the Pirates & Pals Fireworks Dessert Voyage for little scallywags. You get to interact with one of the greatest pirates of all, Captain Hook, feast on a delicious bounty, and have a perfect view of Magic Kingdom Park’s fireworks spectacular,” Rayna suggests. “To make the adventure more memorable, book at pirate transformation at The Pirates League beforehand. The birthday pal might just pass as a member of Hook’s crew.” Character Dining at the Resorts Looking for a celebration location outside of the parks? Tabitha recommends numerous restaurants located at Walt Disney World Resorts including Chef Mickey’s, Story Book Dining at Artist Point with Snow White, and even Minnie’s Beach Bash Breakfast at Cape May Café. The Wonderland Tea Party at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is where Leslie’s daughter selected to celebrate her big day! Teens and Tweens Celebrating a birthday at Walt Disney World Resort is a great idea for any age! Many parents might think all Mouseketeers would prefer a Character Meal celebration, but older kiddos might have more sophisticated palates. Take for instance, Eean’s son. “When we asked our middle son where he wanted to have his milestone 10th birthday dinner, he promptly said, ‘California Grill, because I can see the entire Magic Kingdom while I eat!’ We arrived to a table strewn with Mickey confetti, and he filled up on his favorite foods- pizza and sushi! The surprise of the night was a customized cake that I pre-ordered from the Cake Hotline. Since he’s a Halloween Baby, the cast members baked up a spooktacular Haunted Mansion-themed dark chocolate cake. There’s no doubt that this was a birthday to remember!” How about a day at Disney Springs? Angie says, “let teens test their basketball skills at NBA Experience at Disney Springs, spend the afternoon shopping for birthday goodies, enjoy dinner and entertainment at The Edison, and then end the evening celebrating with floats on the rooftop deck of the Coca-Cola store!” For more great birthday celebration tips, or for general Disney vacation questions, visit DisneyParksMomsPanel.com for an answer from one of our panelists. 17. If you follow us on Instagram you’ve probably noticed Disney Springs has a new mural dedicated to our favorite Orange Bird and it’s my new favorite photo opp. (Hello new #WallsofDisney addition!) While this wall mural may be new, Orange Bird is no stranger to Disney Springs. In the 1970s, he had his own pavilion at Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village (at what is now Disney’s Pin Traders) displaying Florida fresh citrus. (Check out this story by fellow blog author Jenn Fickley-Baker for more Orange Bird trivia and history.) I always love when we pay homage to our rich Disney heritage and I know Orange Bird is guest-favorite at Walt Disney World Resort. I recently caught up with Chris Weck, Art Director with Walt Disney Imagineering to get all the details on the inspiration for this beautiful mural. Check it out: What inspired this new mural and why was Orange Bird chosen? “Orange Bird is such a beloved character with natural ties to our Disney Springs storyline. As a celebration of a central Florida town, its history, and our local environment, Orange Bird is a character who would have been found right here in Florida. We had a well-lit, beautiful brick wall that just begging for some fun treatment. It was easy to take full advantage and harken back to billboards you would have seen along Florida roadways.” Can you give us some insight into the creative process that brought the wall to life? “After much research, we were inspired by vintage Orange Bird art and knew he was a natural fit for Disney Springs. Once a design was developed, it was projected onto the wall and drawn with chalk, and then hand painted. Painting allows the graphic to fade in the sun over time, just as we see other “ghost graphics” wear and convey a sense of time and history.” I noticed Walt Disney Imagineering painted this by hand! How long did it take from start to finish? “Yes! We were fortunate to have one of our painters hand paint the mural in place. He needed to work during daylight hours, so the painting process occurred over one week, working from 7 a.m.-noon. By 9 a.m. on day one, guests were already noticing and getting very excited! It was a fun added benefit that guests could see the progress being made first hand.” Any other fun details about the design you would like to share with readers? “We already know how much our guests love Orange Bird so I’m really looking forward to seeing all the creative ways they interact with this fun new Disney wall!” You’ll spot this mural located just around the corner from Erin McKenna’s Bakery. Inspired by the spirit of nature and Californian heritage, this full-service spa will be a rejuvenating retreat. Here, you can choose from an array of body treatments, facials, massage and salon services, all performed in a serene setting, sure to relax, revitalize and invigorate the senses. The spa is being designed by Walt Disney Imagineers. Pictured above is a peek at the concept for the relaxation room, featuring Craftsman architecture, comfortable, well-appointed furnishings, a water feature and a stained glass window of the rising sun. 23. There are PLENTY of Disney witches out there… But, whose fingers are these?! The Evil Queen at the Oogie Boogie Bash Halloween Time in Disneyland is full of treats, merch, and even the Oogie Boogie Bash! Over in Disney California Adventure, though, there’s some double toil and trouble brewing up with a returning snack. The Witch’s Fingers are back again at Carthay Circle Restaurant! Carthay Circle Restaurant The soft pretzel breadstick “fingers” come with roasted almond “nails” on the ends and a honey butter dipping sauce. 24. Do any of you remember the Disney Sing-Along Songs videos that were released on VHS starting in 1986 (and later on DVD)? Some of the videos were hosted by Professor Owl, who is the lucky subject of today’s Disney Doodle! In the video series, Professor Owl, encouraged a classroom of little birdies (and viewers watching) to sing along to Disney songs. According to Ashley, if Professor Owl was able to visit a Disney theme park, he’d likely make Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room his first stop. “I love the Disney Sing-Along Songs videos,” Ashley said. “It’s easy to imagine Professor Owl and his class wanting to sing ‘The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room’ together! 25. Nobody wants to experience FOMO…or “fear of missing out”…especially, not DISNEY FOMO! Cinderella Castle There’s so much to see, do, eat, and buy while visiting Disney that it can be really easy to get overwhelmed. How do I know what’s a must-do, and how do I know I’m choosing the RIGHT things?! These are all questions that can shoot through your mind when planning a Disney vacay. But the hard truth is that there is literally NO WAY you can see or do it all when visiting Disney World. There’s simply too much STUFF for that to be possible! So…to help you avoid that awful Disney FOMO, we have come up with eight helpful tips so you can make the most of your vacation. Animal Kingdom’s Asia Pre-Planning 1. Do Your Research Research is one of the most important parts of getting ready for a Disney World vacay. We say it all the time, but you’ve got to read up on what to do while on your trip. (And aren’t you SMART, you’re already doing that?!) Keep checking out DFB (and watch our youtube channel!) so you know what’s worth your $$$ and what you can pass up. Cinderella Castle Research is SUPER useful when trying to figure out which resort hotel to choose, dining reservations to book, and FastPasses to secure. It will also help you create a list of things you KNOW you NEED to see and do visiting the park. Then, you can start laying out your must-do attractions and top priorities! Welcome to the Polynesian Village Resort! If you’re planning your very FIRST Disney vacation — check out these tips! 2. Avoid Overbooking Your Time While planning, prioritize your one or two must-dos in each park and for each day, then give yourself some flexibility. Overplanning and overbooking your time can often leave you 1) exhausted 2) overwhelmed 3) disappointed when you don’t get everything done. Rivers of Light Dessert Party in Animal Kingdom To avoid this, try placing your top dining locations and attractions on your itinerary. Then, leave a little room for extras…like napping, grabbing a fun snack, or swimming in the hotel pool!! And you never know when you’re going to see something NEW that you want to do at the parks. But if you’re already booked to the gills, you won’t have any room to explore and enjoy new options. We also suggest leaving a bit of time for rest and relaxation. Let those feeties take a break, sit down at a relaxed spot like BaseLine Taphouse and sip on a brew, or maybe even take a nap. All of these small moments of rest will help make your overall vacation feel a bit more chill. Want our best tips for chillaxing on your Disney vacay? Check out our video below! 3. Know What You Want In Advance…So You Don’t Miss Out On The Best of the Best Another great tip that will save you lots of time and MONEY is knowing what you want to eat BEFORE you get to Disney! A great way to figure out what snacks and dining locations are worth it is to check out our Disney food reviews. Sunny Side Up Burger at Restaurantosaurus We have reviewed just about EVERYTHING Disney has to offer in order to help make your decisions a little easier. We did the dirty work for you. African Sunshine Cupcake Check out our full Disney World restaurant guide HERE! While You’re There There are a few little tips that you can do to maximize your Disney vacation while at the parks. 4. Go to a Character Meal Instead of Waiting in Line If meeting characters is a priority for your family, be sure to make a few character dining reservations. We suggest this because going to a character meal instead of waiting in lines to meet the characters can actually knock out two birds with one stone…and save you time to do even more fun stuff! Will you be dining with Tigger at Crystal Palace? Instead of waiting in a long line, you’ll be able to chill out in the AC, chow down on some yummy food, and wait as four or five characters come to you!! Ultimately, this will give you the ability to meet a large number of characters in a fraction of the time it would take in the parks. Goofy at Chef Mickey’s Now, keep in mind, there are some characters that can only be met at a meet-and-greet location. A few of these include Mulan, Gaston, and Elena. But if you’re looking to meet more classic characters like the princesses or Mickey and Minnie, then character dining is a great option. Dopey Of course, booking character reservations is where a bit of research and planning comes in because you want to make sure that you are dining at a location with good food and characters that you want to meet. Some of our favorites? Storybook Dining at Artist Point where you can meet Snow White, a couple Dwarfs, and the Evil Queen; and Tusker House in Animal Kingdom where you can meet Mickey and his pals in their safari gear! Daisy Duck at Tusker House Check out our full list of character meals here!! 5. Rope Drop the Parks if You’re a Morning Person If you’re a morning person, plan on rope dropping whatever park you are visiting that day. This means that you get there a few minutes before the park opens so you can be one of the first people inside. WHY get up EARLY when you’re on vacation, you ask? Well, we enjoy doing this because the parks aren’t very crowded (better chance to knock out more of your high-priority attractions) — and the temperatures are typically cooler. Stay in the Parks Late if You’re a Night Owl If you’re not a morning person (SAME!), then plan on staying at the parks late. If you were unable to snag a FastPass for, say, Space Mountain or Peter Pan’s Flight, later in the evening should be a good time to hop those. Wait times may also be lower during the fireworks show. So, if you’re ok with skipping the fireworks, you can use that to your advantage as well. Extra Magic Hours are additional hours where the parks remain open for guests staying at a Disney Resort or a few good neighborhood hotels. We loveeee those Extra Magic Hours because the parks really tend to be less crowded during those times.
