  6. Disney is committed to providing comfort, happiness, and inspiration to kids and families around the globe. This especially rings true during the holidays when Disney VoluntEARS participate in activities to help bring holiday joy to those in need. VoluntEARS across Disney Parks, Experiences and Products have been busy during this special time of year adopting families, visiting hospitals, donating toys, and much more. Here’s a look at how cast members made a difference this holiday season. The Disneyland Resort VoluntEARS brought a touch of Disney magic to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) at the annual holiday party. A giant gingerbread carousel, a yule log cake as long as a table, characters, balloons and sketch artists helped make the day bright and cheerful for patients and families. Walt Disney World Resort VoluntEARS spread holiday joy by donating nearly 30,000 gifts for children in Central Florida as part of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots drive. Throughout the month, VoluntEARS also dedicated nearly 4,000 hours of service sorting and distributing thousands of donated toys. Disneyland Paris hosted “Mission Noël,” and collected toys for children that are hospitalized during the holiday season. More than 1,200 toys were generously donated by more than 100 Cast Members and Disney VoluntEARS. Shanghai Disney Resort VoluntEARS and beloved Santa visited Shanghai Children’s Medical Center to bring Disney magic and warmth to the young patients on December 12. More than 200 children were surprised with gifts. Throughout holiday season, VoluntEARS continued to visit children’s hospitals and accompanied young patients through holiday-themed crafts, authentic Disney stories, and other interactive activities. VoluntEARS at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort prepared hundreds of Christmas gifts for delivery to hospitals and schools this holiday season. They also took the time to write handwritten messages in Christmas cards for kids with challenging health conditions, wishing them a Merry ‘Wishmas.’ Tokyo Disney Resort VoluntEARS celebrated the holidays in a sweet way by raising money for a cause with their Holiday Charity Bake Sale. All of the proceeds from the sale were donated to Aiji no Ie (House of the Precious Children), a local orphanage in Tokyo. At Consumer Products Commercialization and Products, Publishing and Games, and Walt Disney Imagineering, teams of VoluntEARS adopted families facing poverty, insecurity, and homelessness this holiday season. Through the Adopt-A-Family program, families served by local non-profits Ascencia, Para Los Ninos, and Family Promise of the Verdugos provided Disney VoluntEARS with their holiday wish lists. Using each family’s list as their guide, VoluntEARS shopped for gifts, held wrapping parties, and delivered gifts. This year, Glendale and Burbank Disney VoluntEARS adopted 254 families, 70 of which were supported by local DPEP teams. Additionally, VoluntEARS packaged 2,000 Clean the World hygiene kits and bagged more than 32,272 lbs. of food for the L.A. Regional Food Bank. For more than 36 years, Disney VoluntEARS have been making a positive impact in communities around the world. Last year, VoluntEARS provided more than 600,100 hours of service and the Company donated more than $332 million in cash, in-kind support, and product donations to various charities around the world. 11. If there is one thing we know about the Walt Disney Company is that they are always finding ways of surprising us year after year. 2019 was no different, as it was a year full of surprising changes for the Walt Disney World Resort theme parks. Walt Disney World As with all Disney changes, some guests were huge fans and others…not so much. Today, we are sharing Disney’s most surprising moves we were NOT expecting in 2019. The Ban on Ice In a move that many considered “cold as ice”, Walt Disney World and Disneyland banned guests from entering the theme parks with loose ice and/or dry ice. Disney stated that the ban on ice was put into place to streamline security bag check and entry processes, ease congestion, and improve guest flow. Hollywood Studios Bag Check It’s not too uncommon to see a guest with a small cooler in the parks, but the ban seemed oddly specific. Disney recommends the use of reusable ice packs in place of loose ice, so you CAN still bring your coolers to the parks. Additionally, don’t forget that FREE cups of ice are available at food and beverage locations at all four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks! Click here to learn more about the ice ban at Disney Parks! The Ban on Stroller Wagons In early 2019, stroller wagons were the hot items of the year for parents everywhere. The popularity of stroller wagons quickly made its way into Walt Disney World and Disneyland, as stroller wagons became the “way to roll” around the theme parks. New Park Rules In Effect May 1 Local stroller rental companies could not keep them in stock. There were entire online groups dedicated to stroller wagons and decking them out in advance of Disney theme park visits. While wagons have been banned from Disney theme parks for many years now, Guests were getting away with entering the theme parks with stroller wagons because they were pushed, not pulled. ©Disney Well, slow your roll, because Disney put the ban-hammer on the popular stroller wagons (whether pushed or pulled) on May 1st, 2019! According to Disney, the reduction of stroller sizes is intended to ease guest flow and reduce congestions. Doing so makes the park experience more enjoyable for all who visit. Stroller Size Check Not only were stroller wagons banned, but the size of strollers allowed in the parks was reduced. Strollers must now be 31” or less in width, and 52” in length or smaller to enter the theme parks. Fortunately for parents of multiples, most strollers (including many popular double jogging strollers) still fit within these guidelines (whew!). Stroller Rentals At many security checkpoints, there are now guides on the ground so you can double-check if your stroller fits! If your strollers do not fit within these guidelines, strollers are always available for rental at all of the theme parks. Learn more about the size limits on strollers HERE! The Ban on Smoking For some smokers, Walt Disney World may not be not the “Most Magical Place on Earth” any longer. No Smoking Sign On May 1st, 2019, in an unprecedented move for the Walt Disney Company, smoking and vaping was banned inside all Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort theme parks, water parks, and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. All designated smoking areas were moved outside of the theme parks. ©Disney Smokers were UP IN FLAMES about the news. The ban meant that smokers would need to exit the theme park to smoke or vape. Guests are also allowed to smoke and vape in specified areas at Disney Resort hotels and Disney Springs. However, the majority of guests were happy with this change. It is nice not having to walk through smoke clouds with our families while at our happy place! Learn more about where you can (and CAN’T!) smoke in Disney World HERE! The FuelRod Swap Fee…That Never Came to Be. If you are unfamiliar with FuelRods, allow us first explain what they are. FuelRod Station FuelRods are portable cell phone/mobile device chargers that can be purchased for $30 plus tax in Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and may airports, malls, and other theme parks used to “fuel” your device on the go. Once you’ve used your FuelRod, you can then swap it for a new and fully-charged FuelRod at any of the FuelRod kiosks. Swapping Fee Sticker Sometime in October, FuelRod added signage to their kiosks which indicated that the “unlimited” swaps would now cost $3 per swap as of November 1, 2019. Guests were FURIOUS! BUT…less than a week and one class-action suit later, the FuelRod saga came to an end when FuelRod and Disney backtracked on the $3 per swap fee. Click here to read more about the FuelRod fee reversal! Skyliner Emergency Kits When the Disney Skyliner had its first large (and widely publicized) incident, pictures of the Skyliner Emergency Kits took the internet by storm! People had many thoughts about what was included in the kits, and what was not. Re-creation of the Skyliner Incident Guests who were stuck on the Skyliner were instructed to open the emergency kits (which many people didn’t even know existed) and were surprised to find pouches of water, a pencil and notepad, a light stick, a small whistle, a cold pack, and blue “emesis” cups (a.k.a. vomit bags). Skyliner Sign Many Guests speculated that these emesis cups could double as waste cups. We’ll let you exercise your imagination on that one… We would have loved to see a privacy blanket or a blanket for cooler weather (yes, it does get into the 30s and 40s in Orlando on occasion!), snacks, and toilet paper (or other clean-up items) in this kit. You know, just in case nature calls. Check out what WE would have put in the Skyliner Emergency Kits HERE! Removal of Star Wars names from Menu Items in Galaxy’s Edge Bright Suns…’Til the Spire…Friend Endorian Tip Yip?!? Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo Communicating in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge can be a bit of a challenge for guests not down with the lingo. It appears that was especially the case in Galaxy’s Edge dining locations like Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, where Cast Members were finding that the Star Wars-inspired names were confusing some guests. As a result, Disney changed the menus to remove the whimsical Star Wars-inspired dish names. But wait, they then brought them back…sort of (oh Disney, you confuse us) by creating hybrid names instead. Having trouble following along? So are we! Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo in Disney World For example, Fried Endorian Tip Yip was first changed to Fried Chicken (boring!) and was then changed to its ultimate and most current name, Endorian Fried Chicken Tip Yip. While many Guests may still not know what ‘Endorian’ or ‘Tip Yip’ mean, they definitely know what Fried Chicken means! Endorian Fried Chicken Tip Yip Removing the Star Wars-inspired names also removed a lot of the uniqueness of visiting a galaxy far, far away, especially since every menu item had a description of the dish directly under it. However, we’re glad they settled on hybrid names in order to bring back some of the magic of visiting Batuu! In fact, we could definitely go for some Batuuan Beef Pot Roast right now. Check out what all the current names at Docking Bay 7 look like by clicking HERE! MagicBand Slap Bracelets MagicBand Slap Bracelets made their entry to Walt Disney World Resort on November 12th, 2019…and were gone 2 weeks later. Slap Bracelet MagicBands Why? We don’t exactly know, but we’ve heard reports of guests having issues with the RFID chip’s capabilities. Guests had mixed reactions to these surprise MagicBands. Many thought they seemed “cheaper” than regular MagicBands. Others thought they’d be easier for little ones to lose these than the regular ones, especially because of the “novelty” of the slap band itself. Slap Bracelet MagicBands We hope to see them return soon — while keeping the concerns of guests in mind — as we thought they were a fun new way of wearing our MagicBands. Check out the first slap bracelet MagicBands we spotted here! Cast Member Benefit Changes One of the greatest benefits of being a Disney Cast Member is the Main Entrance Pass. This pass allows Cast Members to take family and friends to the parks, for FREE, barring blockout dates. Cast Members Only However, in 2019 it was announced that Cast Members will need to choose between a Disney+ bundle and their Main Entrance Pass benefits in 2020. Say what?!? Disney+ Gift Card Regardless of their decision, Cast Members will still receive complimentary self-admission. It doesn’t take a math genius to realize that there is no comparison between these two options. The Disney+ bundle is approximately $13 per month or $156 per year. A 1-day Park Hopper theme park ticket is worth MORE than that — and with the Main Entrance Pass, Cast Members have access to multiple 1-day Park Hopper theme park tickets for up to 3 Guests! Cast Member While we can understand Disney giving Cast Members the choice between a Disney+ Bundle and the Main Entrance Pass, especially for Cast Members who don’t have friends or family nearby, it seems easy to just give Cast Members access to BOTH perks instead of having to choose (they are the ones makin’ that magic happen every day, after all!) Learn more about Disney+ or a Main Entrance Pass for Cast Member HERE! Disney certainly kept us all on our toes last year! Who can say what the new year will bring, but we’ll be keeping out ears to the ground for the next big “whoa!” change to happen at Disney World! In your opinion, what is the most surprising move Disney made in 2019? Please let us know in the comments below! 12. When I was a kid, the inroads to my Disney passion were a great deal more limited than they are today. There were the parks, of course—when I was able to get to Disneyland from far-off Seattle, it was a sacred pilgrimage. In between, we had the Disney movie releases, and the weekly Disney TV show. I remember seeing the Disney on Parade arena show a couple of times. Magazines and comic books and other consumer goods were available. But there was no Internet, no cable or satellite TV, and certainly no Disney+! As a dyed-in-the-wool Disneyphile, I sought anything that bore the Disney name or featured its stories and characters. Sometimes there were seasonal or celebrity-driven TV specials, and I remember knowing that every year there might be something “Disney” in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the annually-televised New Year’s Day tradition from Pasadena, CA, the Tournament of Roses Parade. Lillian, Walt, and Diane Disney watch the Rose Parade from the balcony of the Hotel Constance, January 2, 1939. (If New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, the parade is held on Monday.) © DisneySince 1890, the annual Tournament of Roses Parade has been an New Year’s Day tradition in Pasadena, and a Disney tradition at many moments in that history. Walt and his brother Roy O. Disney and their young families attended the parade through the 1930s, and in 1938, Walt Disney became a parade participant with a float celebrating the brand-new animated feature “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” The theme of the parade was “Playland Fantasies,” and the Disney float starred the live-action model for Snow White, Marge Champion (née Belcher), costumed as the little princess and joined by performers dressed as the Dwarfs. The 1955 Disneyland float led with the greeting “There Is a Good Time Coming,” since Disneyland’s opening was seven months away. © DisneyNearly two decades later a float promoting the soon-to-open Disneyland was featured in the 1955 parade. Sponsored by Southern California’s beloved Helms Bakery, Sleeping Beauty Castle, Mickey Mouse, flying pink Dumbos, and a silver hot-air balloon were all part of the kinetic magic in motion being exhibited. The float won the Judge’s Special Trophy that year. Since 1962, the Rose Queen and her Court (along with the competing Rose Bowl football teams) have been given special access and have had events of honor at Disneyland each year. On New Year’s Day 1966, Walt Disney appeared as Grand Marshal of the Seventy-Seventh Annual Tournament of Roses Parade, with Mickey Mouse at his side. Walt and Mickey preceded the City of Burbank float (with design supervision from Disney Legend Bill Justice), entitled “Our Small World of Make Believe,” overflowing with Disneyland characters greeting the crowds. Not surprisingly, the parade’s theme that year was “it’s a small world.” After the five mile parade and a Kiwanis club luncheon at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Walt and Lilly continued to the Rose Bowl to watch the UCLA Bruins defeat Michigan State. Walt’s daughter Sharon recalled, “They’d been asking him for years to be the Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade, and he kept turning them down, and I said, ‘Come on, Daddy, you ought to do it.’ He said, ‘Oh, no one in my family would ride with me.’ I said, ‘I will, I’ll ride with you.’ So, he went ahead and agreed to it—and then I got pregnant, and she was due right then. And, at the last minute, it was decided I should not go . . . in the car with him, because what if I went into labor? She was due six days later . . . he was very understanding, and he didn’t say, ‘You let me down.’ He was very happy that he was going to be a grandfather again.” After Walt’s passing, Disney continued to be a regular presence in the annual parade, some of the highlights were the 1971 City of Anaheim float, “A Dream Come True in Anaheim;” a 1973 presence tied to Walt Disney Productions’ “50 Happy Years” promotion; a 1980 float themed to the Disneyland 25th anniversary “Family Reunion” celebration; and a 1985 float, sponsored by the City of Glendale, in celebration of Donald Duck’s 50th anniversary. That year the Pasadena Tournament of Roses also gave a special Certificate of Appreciation to Disney, “In recognition of your contribution to the success of the Tournament of Roses and with thanks for many years of support.” Roy E. Disney, Walt’s nephew and then-head of Disney Animation, served as Grand Marshall in 2000. “For my entire life, I’ve been associated with a company that makes dreams come true, and now I get to be on the receiving end,” Roy said. “I think every kid that grows up in Southern California dreams of being in the Rose Parade, and I certainly was no exception.” In 2004, Disneyland Resort presented the tallest float in Rose Parade history (110 feet), inspired by The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction, and featuring live performers dangling in an elevator. Fifty years after her first Rose Parade appearance, Sleeping Beauty Castle was again feted in Pasadena in 2005. © DisneyA Rose Parade Opening Show marked the 2005 Rose Parade—and the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland—along with a typically-spectacular castle float titled “The Happiest Celebration on Earth.” No one less than Mickey Mouse himself was Grand Marshall that year. The wet weather in 2006 did not stop nor stall The Happiest Celebration on Earth! © DisneyDisney broke another Rose Parade record in 2006, with “The Most Magical Celebration on Earth,” featuring Disney Parks around the world. At that time it was the longest float (150 feet) in Rose Parade history. Designed to honor the park’s 60th anniversary, the 2016 Disneyland entry was a three-unit float with Sleeping Beauty Castle (dressed for its “Diamond Celebration”), Elsa’s ice palace and characters from “Frozen,” and the upcoming Star Wars addition to Disney Parks. Members of the creative teams at Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney Entertainment have held posts as float judges numerous times throughout the years. For the first time ever, the upcoming 2020 Rose Parade will have a “half-time show,” a mid-parade live-action performance of “For the First Time in Forever” from “Frozen” performed by cast members of the National Tour of the hit Broadway musical, now on stage at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. Following the performance, several of the show’s stars will continue down the parade route in a sleigh decorated by FTD, the Official Floral Company of the Tournament of Roses, and featuring California Grown flowers. Be sure to tune in for the Rose Parade on January 1, 2020, broadcast live in the U.S. on ABC-TV beginning at 8:00 AM PST. And maybe spend a little moment of New Year’s gratitude that you don’t have to wait so long and look so hard in order to “find your Disney” in these modern times. View the full article

  17. If you haven’t been to Disney World in a while or even if you’re a seasoned pro, there have been some big changes over the past year that you miiiight not have noticed! Are you ready to go to Disney World? There are five key mistakes you probably weren’t even worried about making last time you visited the parks, but you sure need to note them now! Don’t Bring The Wrong Stroller This past May, Disney implemented a new stroller policy that regulates the size of strollers that are allowed in the parks. The new maximum dimensions are 31” (79cm) wide and 52” (132cm) long or smaller. ©Disney If your stroller measures larger than those dimensions, Disney has their own strollers available for rent. Also note that stroller wagons are not permitted in the parks. Click Here For Details on the New Stroller Policies. Don’t Smoke In the Parks Over the years, Disney has continued to reduce the number of designated smoking areas in its parks and resorts. And recently, Disney announced that they will no longer allow smoking in any of their domestic theme parks, water parks, and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. No Smoking Sign Designated smoking areas for the theme parks have been moved outside the parks; you can consult the theme park map to find them. Magic Kingdom Smoking Area There are still designated smoking areas in Disney Springs and at the Disney resort hotels. Make sure you plan ahead and don’t assume the same designated smoking areas are in the same places they were on your last visit. Click here for ALL the details on the new Disney World smoking policies. Don’t Bring Loose or Dry Ice Into The Parks Many guests prefer to bring their own food and beverages to the parks. While this can save you a ton of money on park food, you will want to be aware of the new policy when it comes to packaging your food in your coolers. Disney no longer allows loose ice to be carried in coolers. You must use ice packs (reusable is preferred). ©Disney Dry ice has also been banned in the theme parks. If you’re interested in bringing your own food into the parks, check out our informative post HERE answering all of your FAQs about bringing outside food into the Disney theme parks! Click Here for Details on the Loose and Dry Ice Ban. Don’t Forget To Plan Ahead To Pick Up Your ECV Another recent rule change applies to those renting scooters and ECV’s during their visit to Disney World. Disney announced that ScooterBug will be the Disney Featured Provider for stroller, scooter, and ECV rentals. But what does this mean for other rental companies and for YOU? Essentially, you may continue to rent from other equipment providers; however, you now need to be present at your resort when your equipment is delivered. Buena Vista Rentals, a popular service for guests needing rental equipment, recently announced a ‘meet and greet’ system where they have pre-determined times they will arrive to each Disney resort with equipment. Read more about Buena Vista Rentals and the new ECV/Scooter Rental Policy Here! Don’t Forget Your Straws Over the past year, Disney has been gradually eliminating single-use plastics throughout the parks and resorts. This includes straws and lids at all food and beverage locations. Paper Straws If you don’t like using paper straws or trying to maneuver without a lid on your drink cup, remember to pack your own straws (reusable straws are widely available online at low cost) and/or plan to bring reusable cups with lids to transfer your drinks into. Read More About Disney’s Single-Use Plastics Elimination Policy Here As you can see, there’s a LOT changing in Disney World! If you haven’t been for a while, don’t forget to plan ahead so you don’t get caught by these new policies and procedures! What do you think of these recently added rules and policies? 22. Surf’s up at Disney’s PCH Grill, where we recently enjoyed Donald Duck’s Seaside Breakfast! This character meal is at Disneyland’s Paradise Pier Hotel and offers the chance to fill up on breakfast eats and character interactions. PCH Grill Character Breakfast Buffet As you might’ve guessed, Donald Duck’s Seaside Breakfast features characters in their beach finest (you’ll see them in a bit!). We received this fun button when we checked in, which gives you a little sneak peek at how Donald hangs ten! Donald Duck’s Seaside Breakfast After you check in, there’s a little photo op area themed as the PCH Surf Shack! PCH Surf Shack Decor Check out the water conditions, and hang up our snorkel gear before you find your table. PCH Surf Shack Decor PCH Surf Shack Decor The dining room is colorful, with oblong, surfboard-shaped designs here and there. Seating is at tables with comfy padded chairs. PCH Grill If you prefer a slightly quieter meal, you can request to be seated in this room that’s slightly apart from the main space with the buffet. There aren’t any guarantees you will be seated in there, and it’s not SUPER quiet, but it’s got a somewhat calmer vibe. PCH Grill Table settings are simple and have condiments and a sweet flower. PCH Grill Table Setting We loved the presentation of the forks. Also, can we get one of these Mickey-shaped table organizer to go, please? PCH Grill Table Setting The buffet itself is also colorful and is stocked with lots of breakfast staples — and a couple brunch-y items, too. PCH Grill Buffet There’s also an ice cream machine so you can end on a sweet note (Nothing wrong with ice cream for breakfast. Nothing!). PCH Grill Buffet The Omelet Station has lots of options. As we were dining first thing in the morning (we arrived before the doors of the restaurant were even open…), lines were minimal at the buffet. Omelet Station Plus, just check out how cool the actual buffet looks! It’s radically awesome and colorful! PCH Grill Buffet There’s a station for lox, capers, onions, and other related accompaniments. Lox and Accompaniments Fresh fruit included cantaloupe, pineapple, and watermelon. Fresh Fruit Donuts were fresh and tasty, with several options. Donuts Likewise there were four types of Danishes: cherry, cheese, apple, and peach. Cinnamon rolls are available, too. Danishes and Cinnamon Rolls For warm breakfast staples, breakfast potatoes are served with onions and peppers. Scrambled eggs are simple and plain. Breakfast Potatoes and Scrambled Eggs Eggs Benedict were in various stages of disarray, but the color of the hollandaise was vibrant, and the eggs were still runny (those that hadn’t been busted in the warmer). Eggs Benedict Meats included breakfast sausage, mini chorizo, and bacon (not pictured). Breakfast Sausage and Chorizo Chicken Nuggets are available. And before you say these aren’t a breakfast food: Disney chicken nuggs are all day food. No question. Chicken Nuggets There was also sausage gravy and biscuits. Biscuits and Gravy For some regional fare, the buffet offered chilaquiles. These are basically tortilla chips cooked with salsa and eggs! Chilaquiles Of course, it’s not a Disney buffet without Mickey Waffles! Mini Mickey Waffles The online menu calls these Minnie Pancakes. We can definitely make out some ears but no bows. Minnie Pancakes Peanut Butter and Banana Chocolate-Stuffed French Toast is an inventive (and indulgent!) buffet offering! Peanut Butter and Banana Chocolate-Stuffed French Toast In addition to all of these, the buffet also has a parfait bar and breakfast flatbreads. Bread for toasting was available, too! We tried several buffet items, including a cherry danish, lots of Mickey Waffles, and a ham and cheese omelet. Omelet, Mickey Waffle, Danish, and Button Mickey Waffles and Scrambled Eggs The chilaquiles were a nice divergence from the otherwise fairly traditional breakfast buffet, and the fresh fruit was a welcome addition, too. Watermelon, Chilaquiles, Bacon, Breakfast Potatoes, Eggs, and Fruit But with whom will you share your filling buffet breakfast? Well, first is Donald in a straw hat and unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt. Donald Duck Daisy keeps it fresh in a yellow bow and pink and yellow dress. Daisy Duck Minnie posed in her signature polka dots and a visor. Minnie Mouse And Stitch was a bundle of aloha energy, as one would expect! Stitch Overall, we had a great time at PCH Grill’s breakfast buffet. We especially enjoyed the early-morning interactions with characters which weren’t at all rushed due to the restaurant not being full. When we compare this character buffet to Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel, PCH Grill offers a smaller buffet but better character interactions (at least in our experience). But can you really go wrong when you start your day with Disney characters? We think not! Read about Goofy’s Kitchen here! Check out more Disneyland Food Reviews Here!!
