  1. While Disney’s been assuring us there’d be a temporary Starbucks ever since they closed the Fountain View location, we’ve been patiently waiting…and waiting…and WAITING. Epcot Starbucks Window But the wait is FINALLY over, friends! As we shared a few days ago, Epcot’s new temporary Starbuck location is officially OPEN, so let’s go check it out together! Ever since Starbucks entered the Disney parks a couple years back, our lives have never been the same. An afternoon that used to consist of a mandatory mid-day nap back at the resort has suddenly become a caffeine-fueled all-day park-hopping marathon thanks to Starbucks! And while there have been plenty of other places to grab a coffee at Epcot in the interim, we’re so happy to finally have our Starbs BACK! Epcot’s New Starbucks The new Starbucks seemed to literally appear overnight! But, really, tho! The construction on this place happened SO FAST — plus, Disney was super secretive about the new Starbs location. You see, they built it right next to another project they’d been working on, hiding it amongst the already established construction site. So sneaky! Epcot Starbucks You’ll find the new Starbucks (which is called Traveler’s Cafe, btw) between Epcot’s World Showcase and Future World, while the new building to its left houses additional restrooms. We’re loving the buildings sleek design and the fact that this tiny spot is still serving up a BUNCH of yummy options. Starbucks Here’s the breakfast menu for Traveler’s Cafe, a.k.a. Starbucks! They have standard breakfast offerings including sandwiches, wraps, and breakfast pastries to go with your signature Starbucks specialty coffee drinks (like the Irish Cream Cold Brew we’re currently obsessed with!) Starbucks Menu The lines for Epcot’s new Starbucks have been VEEEEEERY long since it opened, so expect to wait a while if you’re heading there — and who knows? Of course, you could always hop over to one of the Joffrey’s locations if their lines are a bit shorter! Or you could head over to Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie, another super-popular and favorite spot of ours to grab a coffee and croissant in the France pavilion! Either way, we’re just excited to have options again! So, get ready to grab those venti cold brews, lattes, and fraps! Epcot’s Starbucks is BACK in business, baby! Are you excited that Epcot finally has a temporary Starbucks location? Tell us if you enjoy going to Starbucks on your Disney World trips in the comments below! 2. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll soon have another reason to stop by Disney Springs next year! Disney Springs sign That’s because Disney Springs will soon be home to an M&M’s Store! The M&M’s Experiential Store, which is currently located at the Flordia Mall, will be relocating to Disney Springs in 2020! The store will be like few M&M’s stores around the globe. Instead, it will be one of five experiential stores, the other four located in New York, Las Vegas, London, and Shanghai. Construction is expected to begin immediately and the store will be located on the West Side of Disney Springs. We will keep you posted on all the sugary details as they are released, so keep your eyes peeled! This is just one of a few other locations making their way to Disney Springs. 3. Earlier this month, Disney purchased a large amount of land, leaving many to wonder what Disney’s plans are for potential future expansion in Florida. We can only imagine what Disney has up their sleeves! Compass Rose Corp., a subsidiary of Disney, purchased 235 acres of land from Lake Reedy LLC. The land is situated northwest of the Oak Trail Golf Course. Disney Purchases 235 Acres of Land, Outlined in Light Blue. Source: Orange County Property Appraiser This purchase of land pales in comparison to the 1,500 acres Disney purchased in January 2019. While Disney’s plans for this new bit of land have not been shared, we’re interested to see what Disney has in store. Disney is going through a large amount of change at the moment. The company is currently transforming Epcot and they’re adding a slew of new attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. They’re also introducing a few new dining locations like Space 220 and new hotel experiences like the Star Wars: Galactic Star Cruiser. We’re interested to see how these new 235 acres add to Disney’s ever-changing and growing theme park experience. What would you like to see Disney World develop next on their property? 5. Disney Springs West Side is bustling with energy and excitement lately! In August we opened the incredible NBA Experience and shared more details about the new Cirque du Soleil show (slated to premiere on April 17, 2020)—and soon-to-come Beatrix neighborhood restaurant. Today I’m excited to share breaking news on a new shopping destination adding some colorful fun to the mix. M&M’S Orlando store will be making a sweet addition to our unparalleled mix of shopping at Disney Springs. The new state-of-the-art store will offer an immersive experience that combines the colorful fun that fans of the M&M’S brand enjoy with lasting memories. “Guests will be fully immersed into an interactive chocolate experience that will create more moments and more smiles through the colorful fun of M&M’S,” said Patrick McIntyre, director of global retail at Mars Retail Group. 9. Greetings from Disney Springs! Disney Springs We recently stopped by for a bit of (last minute) holiday shopping, and found ourselves in need of dinner. We love SO many options at Disney Springs — from fried chicken at Homecomin’ to the most delicious ribs at Morimoto Asia, it’s a foodie’s paradise! But this day called for a little of this and a little of that, and we knew the perfect place to go. It was time to visit one of our favorite spots — Wine Bar George! Atmosphere Wine Bar George is the first restaurant from Master Sommelier George Miliotes (the name behind the California Grill Wine Menu in Disney’s Contemporary Resort) — in fact, it’s the only Master Sommelier-owned restaurant in all of Florida. Wine Bar George Wine Bar George is a two-story restaurant, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Upper Terrace at Wine Bar George Upon entering, you’ll find a large bar with first-come, first-served seating. “Welcome” to the downstairs bar We love the rustic contemporary style of Wine Bar George. Note the brick wall, large wood tables, and rod-iron light fixtures. Seating surrounding downstairs bar Industrial, illuminated stairs light your way upstairs! Stairwell Here, you’ll find another bar, complete with granite counter-tops. Upstairs Bar You’ll find additional seating upstairs, from tables to couches. Upstairs seating The entire restaurant feels like it’s welcoming you into a friend or relative’s home, inviting you to indulge in a glass of wine (or two) and some tasty dishes. Don’t mind if we do! Eats Of course, Wine Bar George is known for its impressive wine selection. They have over 140 wines available by the bottle, glass, or ounce. But they also boast a delightful menu made of small plates, boards, entrees, and family-style platters. Menu (Click to Enlarge) We decided to kick things off with a few of the small plates — we wanted to re-taste a few old favorites, and test out a few new additions. Menu (Click to Enlarge) The Saganaki on Fire is literally cheese on fire. FIRE CHEESE, yes please. Wine Bar George added this to the menu in October, and we couldn’t resist trying it again. As you can tell, the fire really pops in the evening! Saganaki on Fire The Saganaki is literally a slab of Vlahoriti cheese, which with is doused with Metaxa (a Greek spirit), and then set on FIYAH. The server also squeezes a lemon on top to add a little citrusy zest and keep the fire burnin.’ It’s served with crostini, and while simple (in ingredients, not in presentation), it’s really delicious. Saganaki on Fire Next up, we had to try another recent addition to the menu: the Shishito Peppers. Shishito Peppers These are Asian peppers, coated in lime and a chipotle seasoning, and grilled until they become blistered. They are strong in flavor, but not overwhelmingly hot. Even those who are heat-averse can enjoy them. Shishito Peppers They do have the seeds in them so, beware! But overall, they were a simple and fresh dish that served as a nice addition to the heavier cheese-based plates on the table. (More cheese to come.) PRO TIP: put some on a crostini with the fire cheese. You’re welcome. We also couldn’t resist an order of the House-made Meatballs. House-Made Meatballs These beauties come as an order of three, and sit on a bed of triple cheese polenta with tomato sauce. House-Made Meatballs These are once again a winner! They are nice and moist, yet not heavy. We love how the polenta serves as a creamy addition and perfect base for the meat. The tomato sauce brings a slight sweetness. Overall, they are very flavorful and a great dish we highly recommend when you visit Wine Bar George. House-Made Meatballs Last on our small plates list, we were legally required (well DFB law) to order the Crispy Mac & Cheese Bites. Mac and Cheese Bites The crispy Mac and Cheese bites are lightly fried, come topped with Pecorino cheese, and on top of a tomato nage. These are AH-mazing. Just look at that noodle yumminess! The mac and cheese itself is creamy and delightful, and the breading is nice and light. You know how when you eat mac and cheese with a breadcrumb crust, and you want just the bites with the breadcrumbs? That’s what every single bite of these are like. (This can’t just be us, right?) The Crispy Mac and Cheese Bites are served as a plate of four — perfect for sharing. Or not. We won’t judge. Mac and Cheese Bites Moving on from small plates, we had our eye on one of the entrees: the Santa Carota Short Ribs. Santa Carota Short Ribs These Short Ribs are served with red potato mash and caramelized seasonal vegetables. Seasonal Vegetables In our case, the seasonal veggies were sweet potatoes, parsnips, and onions. They were perfectly cooked and seasoned well! They weren’t the star of the dish, but a good compliment. Santa Carota Short Ribs The star of the show is of course, the short ribs. These were literally fall-off-the-bone tender — and George himself told us why. The cattle they use for these ribs are from the legendary Santa Carota farms in California. These free-range cattle are originally grass fed, but as they grow they switch them to an ALL CARROT DIET. Say what?! Seems crazy but this beef was lean, flavorful, and moist, so clearly it works. Santa Carota Short Ribs We also loved the red potato mash, which went perfectly as a creamy BFF for the short rib. It was flavorful, yet simple, so it didn’t overpower the beef. While this entree could certainly serve as a meal for one person, since we had already enjoyed several small plates, we treated it like another larger shared plate. After we basically licked said plate, we were once again happily full from a meal at Wine Bar George. Overall Wine Bar George continues to be a delightful dining experience. The service in our experience has always been top-drawer, with the servers being both very knowledgeable about wine and the menu. From simple plates like meatballs to dishes that are literally on fire, Wine Bar George’s food always seems to have good flavor, which is enjoyed in a comforting atmosphere. We will absolutely be back again and again! Have you found a favorite dish at Wine Bar George? Let us know in the comments section! Related posts: Review! Wine Bar George in Disney Springs Review! 11. We’re excited to officially announce that you will be able to team up with some of your favorite Avengers at Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure park beginning summer of 2020! As we’ve previously shared, this campus is set up by the Avengers to recruit the next generation of Super Heroes. Avengers Campus is home to the Worldwide Engineering Brigade – also known as “WEB” – which will house our new Spider-Man experience, the first Disney ride-through attraction to feature this iconic Super Hero. During an open house at WEB, the aspiring inventors are excited to invite you for a test drive of their latest invention: the “Web Slinger” vehicle, which allows you to sling webs just like Spider-Man! The attraction gives you a taste of what it’s like to have actual super powers as you help Spider-Man collect Spider-Bots that have run amok. Avengers Campus will also feature Pym Test Kitchen. Just as Ant-Man and The Wasp use “Pym Particles” to grow and shrink just about anything, Pym Technologies is using the latest innovations to grow and shrink food at this eatery. You will also find heroic encounters throughout the campus, including Black Widow, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Super Heroes from Wakanda and Asgard, and Iron Man. As Super Heroes continue to assemble at the campus, one of its iconic buildings will be the Avengers Headquarters where you should be on the lookout for Avengers in action. Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog and the official Avengers Campus module to learn more and get ready to join the next generation of heroes! 12. While we’ve been fa-la-la-la-loving Disney World’s Christmas decorations this year from the enormous tree at Disney’s Contemporary Resort to the Gingerbread House inside Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort’s lobby, here’s a look at some of the MOST AWESOME Christmas displays WE’VE SEEN YET! The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness And they weren’t made by Disney World either, but rather by its GUESTS! We’re not sure who the creative tour de force behind these impressive Christmas displays are — which we’ll get to in a sec, BUT FIRST, let’s set the scene! You may already know from our previous coverage that folks who stay at Disney’s Fort Wilderness are SERIOUS when it comes to their holiday traditions! They’ve been known for their unique golf cart decorations and parades — perhaps you may have spotted some yourself if you’ve ever made you way to Pioneer Hall to see the Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue, their raucous Western-style dinner show! Hoop Dee Doo Revue We love seeing Fort Wilderness lookin’ all festive this time of year! Although the weather outside was frightful (and we were getting a little drenched standing in the rain!) Pioneer Hall looked so nice and cozy with all its Christmas trimmings! Pioneer Hall And how stinkin’ adorable is this Christmas tree outside with its wagon wheels, lanterns, cowboy boots, and horseshoe decorations! Why, it’s a real knee-slapper! Christmas Tree at Fort Wilderness All this tack and equipment must mean we’re near Tri-Circle D Ranch, which offers Holiday Sleigh Rides this time of year! Holiday Sleigh Rides Sign Okay, we feel like we’ve built up the suspense long enough — it’s time to show you the Christmas spectacle we all came here for… BEHOLD! The MOST decked out Christmas campsite at Disney’s Fort Wildnerness Resort we’ve ever SEEN! Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort It’s a lot to take in, but WHATTA DISPLAY! Such pageantry! So many personal touches! We’re practically bowled over by its stunning beauty! We love the mash-up of vintage pieces like the Disney character blow molds in front of the RV with the newer, modern inflatables flanking the motorcoach on either side! Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort Plus we spy a ton of holiday plush Mickeys and Minnies on the dashboard! It looks like these guys REALLY love Christmas AND Disney — two of our favorite things, TOO! Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort But that’s not all — because what Fort Wilderness campsite would be complete without its golf cart for gettin’ around? Of course, these guys weren’t slackin’ when it came to making theirs look the part of MOST EPIC HOLIDAY WHIP EVER! They decked theirs out with garland, lights, ornaments, and even a giant stuffed Mickey and Minnie on the back! Even the tent they have for parking their golf cart underneath is decorated! Talk about CONVICTION! Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort We’re not entirely sure if this is all just the same campsite’s doing, but the display went on… Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort …and on… Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort …and on! Seriously, folks! We’ve watched those great Christmas light fight shows before, and this campsite rivals some of the competition we’ve seen on TV! Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort You gotta hand it to these campers — they sure know how to PARTY! Hope you guys have a wonderful holiday, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! What do you think of this over-the-top holiday display? Do you enjoy taking part in some of Fort Wilderness’ traditions? Tell us about ’em in the comments below! 13. Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad! One of my favorite holiday traditions is baking cookies with mi familia. And this year, I have a new recipe that I want to share with you! This great cookie, a chocolate crinkle, is featured this year at Feast of the Three Kings Holiday Kitchen at the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays and is included in the cookie stroll that is also part of the Festival. While at the theme park, you can’t miss stopping by this holiday kitchen that pays homage to the Día de los Reyes Magos, a holiday celebrated in the Caribbean, Latin America and Spain. Some of the dishes that you can enjoy at the Holiday Kitchen include drinks like Coquito (with and without rum), Pastelón (sofrito-marinated beef with sweet plantains and olives), an Arepa topped with melted queso fresco and another Arepa topped with shrimp, crushed avocado ají and tomato sauce, and a Tres Leches Rice Pudding with Pumpkin Seeds. Epcot International Festival of the Holidays runs until December 30, 2019, and it is included in the regular admission to Epcot. Here’s the recipe for the chocolate crinkle cookie so you can have a little bit of Epcot in your casa! Chocolate Crinkle Cookies *Makes 12 -14 Cookies These rich, fudgy chocolate cookies are coated with confectioners’ sugar that cracks — or crinkles — when they bake, giving them a snow-capped, wintry look. Note that the dough needs to refrigerate for at least 3 hours (up to 24 hours) prior to baking. Ingredients: 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar (for coating the cookies) Directions: 1. Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in medium bowl until combined; set aside. 2. Add granulated sugar and oil in bowl of stand mixer. Beat on medium-low until combined. Add eggs and vanilla, beating on medium-high until combined. Gradually add flour mixture and beat on medium-low speed until combined. (Note: The consistency will be similar to a brownie batter but will firm up with chilling.) 3. Tightly seal bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours (or up to 24 hours) until dough is completely chilled through and able to be rolled into balls. 4. After dough is completely chilled and ready to be baked, preheat oven to 350°F. 5. Line large cookie sheet with parchment paper. Fill small bowl with confectioners’ sugar; set aside. 6. Remove and unwrap dough. Using medium cookie scoop to measure out dough, roll into round balls. Roll dough ball in confectioners’ sugar until completely covered on all sides. Place cookie balls at least 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheet. 7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes – do not overbake. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 3 minutes. Transfer cookies to wire rack, and let them cool until they reach room temperature. 8. Store in sealed container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months. View the full article
  14. Aaaaawwwwww yeah! OK, I know most people probably don’t think it’s fun to write a blog post on Christmas Eve while their family is playing games at the kitchen table, but 1) I don’t want to play Minecraft on their giant family realm, and 2) THIS IS SUCH GOOD NEWS I COULDN’T HELP MYSELF!!! I get to tell you ab0ut BEACHES AND CREAM reopening and that is the best. Christmas. present. ever. Beaches and Cream Now, yes, I did mention that our amazing DFB reporting team was spending the holidays at HOME with their FAMILIES; but it just so happened that one of our incredible team members swung by the Boardwalk in Disney World after all and was delighted to pop into Beaches and Cream for their soft opening today! Win-win! For those unaware, Beaches and Cream Soda Shoppe in Disney’s Beach Club Resort is a guest favorite spot for burgers, grilled cheese, comfort food galore, and MASSIVE sundaes! Atmosphere They’ve been closed for refurbishment since August, and are scheduled to reopen on Thursday. But today they were sharpening their skills with a soft opening, and we got to pop in for the fun! Welcome to the NEW Beaches and Cream! The restaurant’s refurb changed a few things, though, so let’s focus on those for a second. First, the location has been significantly expanded. In the past, Beaches and Cream was T-I-N-Y! Just a few tables and a counter seating area meant that many many families were turned away on a regular basis (and waits for tables were long). Beaches and Cream Counter Now that the location has expanded into part of the arcade next door, there’s lots more space for everyone! There are now 31 tables and 14 counter stools — and a whole WALL of booths! Bigger and Better Beaches and Cream We’re loving that the signature soda shoppe vibe survived the update, though! Beaches and Cream New Space You’ll still find the adorable beach ball decor elements that were so signature to the former space. Beach Ball Decor is Still HERE But adding to the look and feel is this incredible tile… New Beaches and Cream Tile …some incredible and exclusive artwork featuring the fab five… Fab Five Artwork Fab Five Artwork …and some exceptional touches, like these sherbet colored light fixtures! New Light Fixtures And of course you’re going to find a few NEW hidden Mickeys! New Hidden Mickey at Beaches and Cream Now don’t fret — the jukebox is back in a place of honor as well. Beaches and cream Jukebox We’re so excited to see one of our favorites back open — but we need to see what’s happening with that menu! Let’s take a peek at the eats! Eats The menu at Beaches and Cream is very much the same as it was before — quintessential soda shoppe favorites like Chicken Noodle Soup, Grilled Cheese, and Burgers. Oh, and of course some incredible sundaes and shakes return! Beaches and Cream Menu Signature Beaches and Cream Shakes And of course that guest-favorite Kitchen Sink is back! This massive sundae is made to SHARE, and comes piled high with scoops of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and cookies and cream ice creams, EVERY topping in the house, and a WHOLE CAN OF WHIPPED CREAM! Check out the Kitchen Sink HERE! Beaches and Cream Sundaes On this visit, we wanted to try some of the NEW stuff! First up, we had to tackle the brand new Signature Shake!! Beaches and Cream debuted these baked-goods-topped crazy shakes in October 2018, and they’re clearly guest favorites. But with the new opening, they’re bringing in the brand new Storm Along Shake! This one’s cotton candy flavored and topped with a Lifesaver Donut. Storm Along Shake This one is SUPER sweet (not surprisingly), so you may want to share it. (The kids are gonna LOVE it, though!) And the donut on top was surprisingly fresh. Lifesaver Donut There was plenty of icing on top, but the donut itself was soft and delicious — not stale at all as some “I’m-a-baked-good-on-top-of-a-milkshake” cake donuts can be (we have lots of experience). Lifesaver Donut Inside We do love the signature shakes here, though — they’re much better than others of their ilk that are so trendy these days; and you can order them with confidence that you’re not wasting your $$$ on thin, icy milk with a week-old cupcake on top. Signature Shakes On to our new ENTREE choice! We love a good French Dip, so when we saw there was one coming onto the menu at Beaches and Cream, we knew exactly what we were going to indulge with when it came to mains. Beaches and Cream French Dip This sammie is packed with thinly-sliced roast beef, swiss cheese, and fried onions, and it’s all piled on a crispy-chewy roasted french baguette. Now, Beaches and Cream is no stranger to an au jus, and the one served with the French Dip here is flavorful and savory for sure. French Dip We also tried out one of the brand new dessert options on the menu. I bet you can guess which one — everyone’s been gaga over it since Disney noted it was coming onto the menu! The Cookie Fries are HERE! Beaches and Cream Cookie Fries This is a new plant-based option for dessert, and comes with three dipping sauces — marshmallow, strawberry, and chocolate. These are reminiscent of biscotti — so don’t be expecting a super moist, chewy situation. They’re kinda dry…so use those dipping sauces or dip ’em in your shakes or ice cream! Cookie Fry with Chocolate Dipping Sauce The concept is cute and fun, but this isn’t your super-indulgent Beaches and Cream dessert. That space is still reserved for the No Way Jose, IMO! No Way Jose Sundae There’s lots more to try on the menu, and we’ll be back in a couple of days to do just that! By the way, drinks and spiked shakes are still here! Beaches and Cream Drinks and Spiked Shakes Menu Beaches and Cream Drinks Menu Overall After visiting, we’re still SO glad Beaches is BACK. Yes, it’s gotten a reno. Yes, it’s all grown up now. But it’s still our favorite soda shoppe with a lot of our favorite menu items…and a few well-thought-out additions. The renovation makes this space much larger and a lot less “kitschy.” It feels a bit fancier, but you can still expect amazing service (many of Beaches’ cast members are returning after the renovation) and a fun, enjoyable vacation atmosphere here. And when it comes to eats, comfort food still rules the menu — and it’s great stuff. We’re enjoying the expanded menu, but will likely keep going back to old favorites (I luv u grilled cheese) over and over again. Welcome home, Beaches and Cream! We’ve missed you, but we’re fully aware that we’re still going to have to fight to get a reservation for you! Stay tuned to DFB for more reviews from this beloved spot soon! We know we’re not the only ones who, immediately after trying a delicious treat from Disney World, think to ourselves “Where can we get this recipe?!” Toledo Well, lucky us — it looks like we got an early holiday gift this year! While Toledo at Disney’s Coronado Springs regularly serves up small plates and dishes inspired by the flavors of Spain, now they’re sharing the recipe for one of our favorite desserts! The Crema Catalana is one tasty celebration of the Valencia orange! Chef’s Notes Before you start baking, you should know that you don’t need a culinary torch to make the Crema Catalina! All you have to do is put the chilled dessert in the oven on broil for 3 to 5 minutes until a crispy browned crust forms. ©Disney Buuuut, before you get broiling, you’ve gotta mix up the Crema Catalina and topping first! 23. Haha it’s a Christmas Eve Miracle! Big thanks to our DFB reader Travis Y. who sent me these photos this morning (the DFB reporter team is spending today with their families )! Epcot Starbs is OPEN! Epcot Starbucks Window As we know, Epcot has been going through a ROUGH PATCH with all of this construction — but with the reopening of the front walkway planters and the new Starbucks, we’re getting to the point where we can manage ;-D! 24. Boy, do I love the holidays! While it’s always nice to receive gifts, I take special enjoyment in giving gifts, and that goes beyond just sharing with my friends and family. This week, Disney’s animal care team cast members are sharing in the spirit of the season with unique and festive activities for the animals who call Disney’s Animal Kingdom home. Enrichment is the gift that keeps on giving – each day we encourage animals in our care to exhibit their natural behaviors by introducing new things to their environments they can choose to taste, smell, or touch. For some of our animals, like the red kangaroos and the kunekune pigs, it’s all about the yummy treats they can pick off vines and plants or root around for inside boxes. For others, such as the Sumatran tigers and western lowland gorillas, much of the excitement comes from the suspense of figuring out how to open boxes and containers to find a surprise inside. There’s so much to explore and investigate, especially for baby Grace, who has a lot to take in during her first holiday with the family troop. For the animal keepers – enrichment is all about getting creative to make a fun and stimulating experience for the animals. Many of them enjoy building decorations and wrapping some of the animals’ favorite items in recycled paper and plants. Others are getting crafty in the kitchen by cutting fruits and vegetables into holiday cookie shapes and turning popcorn into “snow.” Are you visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom this week? If so, keep your eyes peeled for some surprise-and-delight holiday enrichment fun in many of the animal environments throughout the park.
