Epcot’s multi-year transformation is upon us and, unfortunately, that means an old favorite has closed for good! Epcot Entrance We’ve known for a while that we could expect the closure of Electric Umbrella before the end of the year (sad face). Today, though, we’ve had to say goodbye forever! Electric Umbrella was a quick-service location for burgers, salads, and more, but it wasn’t just a prime spot for the food! The restaurant had so much room for guests to kick back and relax as they took in an awesome view of the Fountain of Nations. Electric Umbrella Now, with the Fountains being removed and many other changes happening around Future World, it’s no surprise that we’re losing this classic restaurant. But, we are still totally sad to see it go! Although we couldn’t fully get to see Electric Umbrella with the construction, you can spot the top of the restaurant behind the walls built around Future World. Electric Umbrella Construction In fact, a lot of Future World looks pretty different today with closures abound. Pin Central has also closed today, you can the top of the structure peeking out from above the construction walls. Pin Central Construction Of course, there is an upside to all the construction! Taste Track is set to begin serving hamburgers soon and Eats at the Epcot Experience just debuted a new menu to serve other family-friendly faves so guests have a chance to snack on the same classics, even with Electric Umbrella closing. Plus, the food scene at Epcot is about to get A LOT cooler with Space 220 opening soon (who’s ready to dine at the Space Station with us??). There are also a bunch of new signs around Epcot to help you navigate where you’re going! Epcot Construction Signs Click here to read more about the Epcot transformation! While we’re going to miss Electric Umbrella, we are eager to see all the changes coming to Epcot soon! Are you bummed about the closing of Electric Umbrella? Let us know in the comments below! Flo’s V-8 Cafe in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure can help you travel back in time to enjoy the sights and tastes from decades ago. The interior has plenty of vintage car detailing, and the menu is packed with comfort food that puts a twist on some old favorites. Flo’s V-8 Cafe Our visits to Flo’s Cafe have left felt like a rollercoaster of highs and lows, so how have all the changes shaken out recently? We’re here to see if Flo’s is worth a pit stop! We used to love Flo’s tasty menu (see this review with some delicious eats!), but when the menu changed last spring, we were a biiiiiit disappointed. Check out our review right after the new menu dropped when we found dry fried chicken and pot pie that just didn’t work for us. Flo’s V-8 Cafe So we’re back to give Flo’s another try, this time with Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken and the Ka-Cheeseburger. Ka-Cheeseburger and Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken The Ka-Cheeseburger (it’s ka-chow for mealtime!) is a 1/3-pound Angus beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, 1000 Island dressing, and caramelized onions. It was served on a sesame seed bun with a side of steak fries. Ka-Cheeseburger There was iceberg lettuce and a slice of tomato on the side so you could build it up a bit if you’re so inclined. Ka-Cheeseburger The burger patty itself was fairly standard — a little overcooked and dark. But the flavor of the patty itself was fine. The toppings were actually where this sandwich shined. The caramelized onions were terrific, and we wanted to get some in every bite. The dressing was good, too — slightly tangy and a nice bit of moisture for the burger. Ka-Cheeseburger We enjoyed this, despite the dry burger. It was a flavorful combination and satisfying overall. Ka-Cheeseburger We speculate Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken is famous for two reasons: one good, one not. Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken The real positive here was the side of garlic mashed potatoes. These were rich and awesome (Note: you can sub out the vegetable side for a second helping of mashed potatoes! We totally think this is the way to go.)! The vegetables are seasonal, and we had some lightly seasoned broccoli and baby carrots. These didn’t rev our engines, but hey: vegetables! Feeling healthy! Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken The fried chicken’s claim to fame (on this visit and past trips) is that it’s famously dry. The exterior is a nice golden color, for the most part, but it definitely felt overcooked. Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken This was disappointing, as we know fried chicken can be done really well at the theme park (see: Plaza Inn Fried Chicken!!). Perhaps the quick service nature of Flo’s makes it harder to manage the cooking time. Whatever the reason, that’s two strikes for the Famous Fried Chicken. Flo’s Famous Fried Chicken So the moral of the story: we recommend going to Flo’s for some garlic mashed potatoes and stay for a burger with caramelized onions. Of course, despite this ho-hum experience, we’ll be back to try Flo’s again, hopefully with better results. We believe in you Flo! Check out one of the newest snacks we found in Cars Land HERE! Minnie Mouse is a style icon and she’s also a fabulous inspiration for treats in Disney World! Rock the Dots Decor We’ve already had a look at the Minnie Cupcake in honor of Rock the Dots, and now there’s another dessert popping up in the Magic Kingdom to celebrate Minnie! Earlier this week we gave you a sneak peek of the Minnie Mouse Chocolate Chip Lava Cake, and it’s finally made its appearance at the Columbia Harbour House! Minnie Mouse Chocolate Chip Lava Cake The chocolate chip cookie is filled with molten chocolate and topped with buttercream and a chocolate Minnie bow! Minnie Mouse Chocolate Chip Lava Cake And, let us tell you that this treat tastes better than it looks! The cookie is served warm, so the chocolate is gooey and SO good. The buttercream and white chocolate bow add a hint of sweetness, but the chocolate is already rich enough on its own! While the cookie might look crisp on the edges, it’s incredibly soft instead (and even had a lot of buttery residue afterwards). We think that Minnie would totally be proud!! Molten Cookie Goodness! You can grab the Minnie Mouse Chocolate Chip Lava Cake for $4.49 at Columbia Harbour House in Magic Kingdom! And be sure to check out the limited-time return of Great Moments in American History with the Muppets while you’re there! Have you tried the Minnie Mouse Chocolate Chip Lava Cake yet? Can you believe we’re already sharing the SECOND installment in the Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction series? 2020 is seriously flying by! Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland With last month’s adorable Space Mountain collection, we knew February had to deliver! And y’all it did just that! We found the newest Pirates of the Caribbean collection in the Emporium in Magic Kingdom today, and we can’t wait to show ya all the adorable new merch. The biggest difference we noticed this month is the bag! This month’s Loungefly bag comes in a fanny-pack style instead of a backpack! Pirate Minnie Fanny Pack The details of this bag though are what really make it stand out. From the pirate ship zipper to the bow and ears that straight-up match the Minnie ears in this collection, we think we found our newest park day bag. You can make this your park bag too for $45. Pirate Fanny Pack The next item we were dying to get our hands on is the adorable Minnie Mouse plush! Pirate Minnie Plush From her skirt to the gloves and even her skull-themed bow, Minnie has traded her space boots for pirate boots and she’s looking cute as can be! Pirate Minnie Plush If you look under her Pirate boots, you’ll find the logo for the collection and the marking for “Series 2 of 12.” The Minnie Mouse plush is $29.99. Pirate Minnie Plush One of the stand-out pieces in this collection has got to be the Minnie Mouse ears. Pirate Minnie Ears These are seriously some of the COOLEST ears we’ve ever seen, from the gold steering wheel and skull to the rather large pirate ship bow! Pirate Minnie Ears We, of course, had to have a complete photoshoot with these fun ears. They’re just so unique, how could ya not? You can get your hands on a pair of these ears fit for a pirate for $34.99. Pirate Minnie Ears The mug continues the gold and black color theme with a large pirate ship bow on the side of the mug, kind of similar to the bow seen on the Minnie ears! Pirate Minnie Mug And remember that these mugs are all stackable! So set this one right on top of your Space Mountain mug (we wouldn’t recommend you stack ALL twelve on top of each other, however!). The mugs are $19.99. Pirate Minnie Mug Checking out the pin set, we found a skull, Minnie Mouse, and a set of Minnie ears to add to your pin collection. The set is $19.99 and comes with three pins! If you’re aiming to get all of the pins in The Main Attraction series, be sure to pick up your collector’s pin portfolio to organize them all! Pirate Minnie Pins Finally, for those of you shopping at Disney World, you can pick up a limited-release Magic Band to complete your collection. Pirate Minnie MagicBand The MagicBand has pirate Minnie on one side. Pirate Minnie MagicBand On the other is a skull, complete with a bow on the other. This limited-release MagicBand is $34.99. Pirate Minnie MagicBand And if you’re not visiting the parks anytime soon, you may be happy to know that this collection is also available online! You can check it out here. Looking ahead, we already have a sneak peek of March’s collection, which will be a celebration of all thing’s Mad Tea Party! ©shopDisney Remember! It’s Valentine’s Day! And in honor of this holiday all about love, we asked cast members participating in the Disney Aspire education program to share what they love most about some very important people…their study buddies! Whether a fiancé, a child or even a furry friend, the support and encouragement of friends and loved ones means the world to all of us. And with more than 12,000 eligible cast members having enrolled in this 100% tuition-paid program, there’s definitely a lot of love to go around for students putting their #DreamsWithinReach. We love hearing how Disney Aspire is helping cast members pursue their dreams and achieve educational goals, and stories like these are a great reminder that the true impact – and hard work – extends beyond the classroom for both our cast members and their loved ones. With more than 400 programs of study to choose from, eligible hourly cast members can pursue their dreams to become teachers, engineers, graphic designers, human resources and legal professionals and more. Professional coaching support is also available every step of the way. And THAT is truly something to love! Happy Valentine’s Day To learn more about Disney Aspire, visit Aspire.Disney.com. You may be smitten by classic Disney relationships such as Ariel and Eric or Kristoff and Anna, but the best fairytales are cast members who found their happily ever after while working at the Disneyland Resort. Here are a few of their stories! Arthur and Eric “It’s a small world after all,” indeed, for Arthur and Eric, who met while working as hosts at the fan-favorite attraction in 2001. They tied the knot in 2013. Today, Arthur works as a Disneyland Engineering Services secretary and Eric as an Entertainment program integration manager. “The term ‘happily ever after’ sounds a bit cheesy, but … I am so lucky to have experienced life and growing up with him,” says Arthur. “Folks often ask if we ever get tired of working at the same place as our spouse, but I can say it’s quite the opposite. Our time together is so precious and both of us calling the Happiest Place on Earth work makes it all the more fun,” added Eric. Carly and Erik Carly and Erik started off as strangers once they were casted as performers in Mickey’s Halloween Cavalcade in 2013, but this spooky parade lead to something much more sweet. The happy couple is now engaged and enjoying date nights seeing their favorite shows at the resort. Carly and Erik are still working in entertainment and Carly loves seeing her fiancé from time to time when she’s working. “It’s a dream come true to be living out my childhood dreams of being a parade performer for Disneyland,” Carly says. “I never knew I would meet the person I would spend the rest of my life with while doing what I loved!” Janice and Tim Not only did Iron Man save the world on multiple occasions, he also ignited a spark between two Entertainment Cast Members, Janice and Tim. He noticed a paper cut-out of the Super Hero she placed on her desk shortly after she started with Live Entertainment in 2013 and began a conversation. Their self-proclaimed “nerdy love” became official when the two married in 2015. Today, Tim is a senior graphic designer and Janice is a secretary for Entertainment Operations. “Since he’s an artist, we started talking about Marvel, which led into Star Wars. We were friends for about six months and would go to conventions and see every movie coming out,” Janice recalls. “We have so many people who work in the Entertainment department cross from one building to the other say, ‘I just saw your other half.’ The fun thing is everyone knows both of us.” Samantha and Adam When Samantha was hired in as a cast member at Jungle Cruise in 2013, she expected to discover wildlife on her trips down the river, but finding love was a bonus. In 2017, the relationship took a wild ride as they began the Disney Leadership Essentials program while planning their wedding. They graduated from the leadership development program the same year and were married by a fellow former skipper, surrounded by cast member friends. Today, they are both Attractions stage managers in Disney California Adventure park. “The Disneyland Resort saved me in so many ways,” shared Adam. “It gave me a career that I love, friends that will last a lifetime and it gave me Sam. I am eternally grateful. That’s part of what makes me so dedicated to this job.” View the full article

One of the joys of being a Disney fan is that the culture we embrace is one about which we feel proprietary. It is ours. We love it and celebrate it, and protect it on a deeply personal level. We hold a love of Disney things—in most cases relating to a highly subjective event or experience. Often those things we embrace become a part of our identity and ethos, and we create rituals or fan bases around them. It’s always interesting—and rarely predictable—what will appeal to that cultural stimulus in we Disney fans, or what we will choose to idolize or celebrate. Movies, music, and characters are a given, but often we really love the rare characters that many people may have forgotten, such as Orange Bird or Val the Velociraptor. Park food has fans—from Mickey Beignets to Dole Whips to a cavalcade of Churro flavors. There are special places, too—not just the parks, but specific locales within the parks, especially since the rise of Instagram: the “Purple Wall” in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World, or the “it’s a small world” backstage gate in Disneyland. We have taken my oldest son to the White Rabbit Door near Alice in Wonderland in Disneyland since he was first walking—he’s 14 now. Years pass, but those special locations remain constant settings for making memories. I was recently made aware of a remarkable “fan stop” at EPCOT, one that I think is certainly worthy of appreciation, and that has a wonderful backstory that many fans may not know about. (I’d been aware of it, of course—I’m a fancy Disney historian after all—I just didn’t realize it had a fan following until recently.) Spaceship Earth, the 180-foot-tall, 165-foot-diameter geodesic sphere that serves as the signature symbol of EPCOT also houses the flagship attraction of the park, showcasing landmark moments of amazing innovation that made today’s spectacular communications technology possible, brought vividly to life using elaborate sets and advanced Audio-Animatronics figures during this inspirational, 16-minute, Omnimover-style attraction. The EPCOT pre-opening of promotion proudly touted the achievements of this iconic structure: “By making use of the technology of tomorrow, the newest ideas materials and techniques industry has to offer, Spaceship Earth embodies the spirit of EPCOT Center, and serves as the centerpiece of Future World.” But for all the justified ballyhoo about its remarkable innovation, one of the most resonant and popular elements of Spaceship Earth—and the “fan stop” I mentioned—is also one of the most ancient art forms: a painted mural. Depicting the resonance of mankind’s communications across history, this evocative work was created by Italian artist Claudio Mazzoli. An artistic polymath, Mazzoli was born in Mantua, Italy in 1942. Moving to Milan at the age of 18, he devoted himself to advanced art courses, as well as studying the mechanics of motion picture technology. Over 15 years of activity in Milan, Mazzoli’s work touched nearly every area of communication: illustration, TV commercials, comics, painting, sculpture, costumes, and production and set design. Work for publications about American West made him interested in the art of that region, and many of his paintings reflect that theme. Mazzoli recalls being brought to California based on the suggestion of animator, Imagineer, and Disney Legend Marc Davis; Mazzoli stayed at Disney for more than eight years, working with greats such as author and “optimal futurist” Ray Bradbury, production designer John De Cuir, Jr., and Disney Legend Herb Ryman. CLOCKWISE LEFT TO RIGHT: Claudio Mazzoli, Eli Erlandson, Mac McElravey, Johno Lim, John De Cuir, Jr. at Walt Disney Imagineering, c. 1980.© Disney Former Imagineer Peggie Fariss says, “I remember Claudio up on a scaffold at Tujunga [the Walt Disney Imagineering facility in North Hollywood] painting it, and we teased him about following in the tradition of Italian Renaissance masters.” Peggie was at that time Manager of EPCOT Development. “Sounds like I was in charge of the development of all of EPCOT, but in fact, I was working in Pat Scanlon’s EPCOT Development Department—a very small group. From 1976 to 1982, I was responsible for planning the EPCOT Future Technology Conferences that enabled us to introduce the project to prospective subject matter experts and to sponsors. We also formed Advisory Groups for Energy, Agriculture, the Seas, Space, and Health; they would come to [Imagineering] periodically to review our stories, and validate or correct our direction. It was one way we were able to balance sponsor input to stories. “Around 1977 or 1978, Marty [Sklar] asked me to do the historical research for Spaceship Earth. We engaged with a variety of folks for this, including the founding dean of the Annenberg School of Communications at USC. One of his graduate students and I filled a room with 3×5 index cards to trace developments in communications technologies (spoken word, stories, pictures on cave walls, hieroglyphics, the alphabet, theatre, Roman roads, illustrated manuscripts, printing press, etc.) as well as what was going on in art, politics, technology, and so on. We spoke with experts to clarify all kinds of historical details. I created an 18-page bibliography—and answered Guest questions about Spaceship Earth for the next 20 years. A fascinating education!” Claudio Mazzoli concept art for Spaceship Earth show scene.© Disney In creating an artwork to summarize and symbolize such an ambitious attraction and theme, Mazzoli said, “To begin, I have to ask, ‘where did man come from?’ Where are we going? What are we looking for? And I think the answer is power. The power of the universe. The good of the universe. It is the life, the electricity this is where we come from and I think, where we want to go. In this painting I tried to make people understand how man communicates, the meaning of communication, how important and powerful communication is.” Mazzoli’s mural remains one of the most beloved and most important art installations at Walt Disney World. Peggie expresses the innate strength of the mural, and perhaps a primary element of its ongoing fan appeal, even nearly four decades later: “Claudio perfectly expressed the Spaceship Earth story in that one piece. It’s so evocative of this sense of the connections and echoes of great minds and innovation through time and space—as though, while they happened in the past, they continue to be present, influencing us and the future.” Claudio Mazzoli concept art for an unrealized scene in Spaceship Earth. © Disney View the full article

There’s love (and Disney magic) in the air all around Epcot for Valentine’s Day! Epcot And, while we’ve been strolling and sipping on the Pomegranate Margarita, we spotted the sweetest signs out for the holiday! You know those punny Valentine’s notes you would give to your classmates as kids? They’re back AGAIN all around the attractions in Epcot! (And, you know we live for a good pun.) Since Living with the Land is sponsored by Chiquita Bananas, it’s no surprise that the ride’s sign says “You Drive Me Bananas!” Living in the Land Valentine’s Sign But, our favorite sign in the Land happens to be the one in front of Soarin’: “Why Wait for B1… Soarin’ Valentine’s Sign …When You Can Be Mine?” Tbh, we’re swooning for whoever thought of this!! Soarin’ Valentine’s Sign Journey into Imagination is getting creative with its theme song, saying “It Only Takes One Little Spark” to have feelings for you, Valentine! Journey into Imagination Valentine’s Sign And, Spaceship Earth is letting guests know how special they are with the “My Favorite Time Traveler” sign! Spaceship Earth Valentine’s Sign But, we’re REALLY loving the “My Love for You is an Evolving Experience” rainbow heart in honor of the big Epcot Transformation coming to the parks! Wow, who knew that the Epcot Experience could be so sentimental?? Epcot Experience Valentine’s Sign Crush and all our fish friends (not food) at The Seas think “You So Totally Rock” this Valentine’s Day! (And, of course, I want these signs to be mine, mine, mine to take back home.) The Seas Valentine’s Sign Olaf might like warm hugs, but Frozen Ever After thinks “You’re Worth Melting For.” Plus, everyone at the Norway Pavilion has “Taken a Viking to You,” since you’re so sweet! Frozen Ever After Valentine’s Day We honestly love these Valentine’s Day signs so much! They’re the perfect small gift for your special someone, or just a reminder that you’re extra awesome! Valentine’s Day is today, but we’re already trying to plan our next holiday outing at Disney World. Here’s a little hint: it involves a lot of green! Raglan Road We’re a little more than two weeks away from March, which means it’s time to get ready for St. Patrick’s Day! If there’s a spot to hit up for this verdant holiday (besides the United Kingdom pavilion at Epcot), it’s Raglan Road at Disney Springs, who will be celebrating the holiday again this year with their annual Mighty St. Patrick’s Day Festival! This year’s Mighty St. Patrick’s Day Festival will run from March 13th through March 17th. The party will feature non-stop entertainment from mornings into late night, with Irish-infused live performances, complimentary face painting, and a vast selection of beers, whiskeys, flights and craft cocktails in addition to Raglan Road’s signature Irish pub eats. Paddy’s (Not Patty’s) Pilsner You’ll be able to jig with the best of them while listening to Irish singers and ballads. Some of the performers that will be rocking and rolling us all night long include Strings & Things, a contemporary Irish Trad/Folk/Roots crossover band, and TradGad, three musicians who will perform using a combination of guitar, fiddle, mandolin, uilleann pipes, tin whistle, banjo, and bouzouki (we are very excited to learn what a bouzouki is!). Raglan Road St. Patrick’s Day Festival You can get into the festival for free on March 13th through the 16th, but on March 17th there will be a $10 cover charge for each guest over 18 years old. Raglan Road will also be holding their Rollicking Raglan Weekend Brunch on March 14th and 15th, a brunch we thoroughly enjoyed last year — check out our review of that here! If this celebration is anything like last year’s festival, Raglan Road is the place to be for St. Patrick’s Day this year! Will you be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Disney this year?
