Guests who will be at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel over the next few days before the hotels are closed on March 20, 2020 at 5:00 PM due to concerns over the Coronavirus will want to be advised of some additional changes which will also take place this week. Walt Disney World Bus Transportation According to the Walt Disney World website, “All Disney transportation will be suspended beginning the morning of Wednesday, March 18, 2020 through the end of the month.” (Please note that Disney’s Magical Express will continue to transport guests to and from the airport through March 20.) For those unaware, last night it was announced that all Disney owned and operated locations in Disney Springs will begin their temporary closure on Tuesday, March 17th. (Prior to last night, Disney Springs and transportation to and from the shopping and dining district were slated to remain open while the four Walt Disney World theme parks will be closed through the end of the month.) Walt Disney World website screenshot Again, please be advised that Disney’s Magical Express will continue transfers to and from Orlando International Airport through Friday, March 20th — the closure date for the Disney World Resort hotels. Today we bid a sweet farewell to the Magic Kingdom and Disney Parks before they closed tonight due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Tonight we had to say “see ya real soon” to the Magic Kingdom and other Disney World Parks as they prepare to close due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Cinderella Castle The Disney World-run Resort Hotels and Disney Springs have planned to remain open during the park closures, but we have started to see certain stores deciding to close anyway. And now we have news that a resort hotel in Disney World is also closing. Tonight we spoke with a Cast Member who stated that the Walt Disney Dolphin Resort is planning to close its doors starting Tuesday, March 17th. Walt Disney Dolphin Hotel The Cast Member said all guests who are already checked into the Dolphin on Tuesday will be transferred over to the Swan to continue their stay. Walt Disney Dolphin Hotel Since the Swan and Dolphin are sister resorts, and many Disney World resorts are running at low capacity right now, this makes sense. It saves on costs of running two hotels that are only partially full, and gives Dolphin guests the opportunity to stay in the upgraded Swan instead. Now, it’s very important to note that the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resorts are NOT OWNED OR RUN BY DISNEY. These hotels are run by Marriott Bonvoy, so the directive to close the Dolphin and move guests over to the Swan was not made by Walt Disney Company executives. As of right now, all Walt Disney World-owned and -run hotels are still open and operating. This is the most up to date information we have so far, but it is subject to change depending on developments. If you have questions about your Disney Resort stay, please call Disney World at (407) 939-3476. We will continue to keep you updated as we hear more information! Check out everything we know so far about Disney and the Coronavirus HERE! Does this resort closure affect your Disney trip? Let us know in the comments below! Walt Disney World is currently preparing for a temporary park closure beginning Monday, March 16th as a precaution due to the coronavirus outbreak. Cinderella Castle At press time, Disney Resort hotels and Disney Springs are set to remain open during the park closure, but some services will still be affected. So far, a few stores at Disney Springs have announced that they will be closed and House of Blues has cancelled several scheduled events. But we are getting a final dose of magic and checking out the crowds on the last day before the closure! Crowds were pretty light as we headed to the Magic Kingdom across the Seven Seas Lagoon! Transportation and Ticket Center Boat Even getting into the parks seemed much easier than a typical day! There were definitely still plenty of people making their way in, but the lines moved quickly. Magic Kingdom Touchpoints Ahh there she is. The beautiful Cinderella Castle in the midst of her makeover. As you can tell, there were much less people than would typically be expected for a weekend — especially during some Spring Breaks! Main Street USA The switchbacks were full as per usual to get a Starbucks cup-0-joe! Magic Kingdom Starbucks After a quick caffeine boost, we headed over to see how the attraction wait times would be affected by the impending closure. Space Mountain had 40 minute wait time, which is impressively low compared to most weekends! Space Mountain On to the most popular ride in the park… Seven Dwarf’s Mine Train had an 85 minute wait (which jumped down to 45 minutes later on). Seven Dwarf’s Mine Train The Fantasyland crowds weren’t packed quite as tight as usual, but there were plenty of people getting in a final ride on Mine Train! Fantasyland Crowds Liberty Square also had lighter crowds than we’ve seen in the past several weeks. Liberty Square Crowds As we were passing by, Haunted Mansion had a 15 minute wait — so just a short line to visit the grim grinning ghosts! Haunted Mansion Over in Frontierland, Big Thunder Mountain remained popular… Big Thunder Mountain Crowds …with a 55 minute wait and plenty of folks lookin’ to ride the wildest ride in the wilderness! Big Thunder Mountain Railroad The newly-renovated Splash Mountain was also accepting visitors with a 45 minute wait. Sounds like a great place to catch a glimpse of the Cinderella Castle makeover from afar! Splash Mountain We made a quick stop over at Casey’s Corner before the fireworks and we weren’t the only ones with a hankering for a hot dog! Casey’s Corner Night fell quickly and we were already starting to get emotional before Happily Ever After even started. Cinderella Castle It has been a very emotional day and week for guests and Cast Members at Walt Disney World Resort. We are doing our best to keep you updates with all the latest Disney happenings, but we sure will miss getting to see this view for the next couple weeks. It’s a bittersweet day, as we take our last trip to Magic Kingdom before the Disney World parks close as a precaution due to the coronavirus. Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom While we were checking out the crowds on the last day before the closure, we also took a peek at the Cinderella Castle refurbishment progress! We were excited to see how things were looking since our previous visit. Cinderella Castle Since we last checked, the castle has received some more blue ALL AROUND… Cinderella Castle …even though there are still a few parts of the old Cinderella blue peeking through! Cinderella Castle But how could we ignore that PINK?? Cinderella Castle They are going bright with this repainting and we are happy to see some refreshed gold accents at the peaks! Cinderella Castle We are still having a hard time saying goodbye to the Cindy castle we knew and loved, but we are excited to see the finished product following the update! Disney hasn’t shared information about how the park closure will affect the progress of construction, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more! Today is the last day Disney World will be open until the end of the month due to the Coronavirus outbreak (and we’re getting pretty emotional). Cinderella Castle While many guests will miss visiting the parks during this time, the Disney College Program participants are officially having to say goodbye. Along with other Disney programs, the Disney College Program is temporarily being shut down due to the park closures. And, while the kids in the programs have to bid farewell to the magic for now, they have all brought a little bit of their own pixie dust into Magic Kingdom today. Since the Disney College Program participants will be leaving Disney World on March 18th, they decided to band together as one big happy family by wearing celebratory pins today. We’re totally crying, you guys… College Program Pins The pins we spotted all celebrated their last day as a part of their respective Disney Programs… College Program Pins …the Disney adventures they went on together… College Program Pins …and the memories and magic they created while they were a part of the Disney College Program. Disney College Program Shirt And, just like the participants gave so much to the guests and parks during their time in the programs, Magic Kingdom decided to return that magic! Multiple rides across the park let program members on attractions through the FastPass lines, like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train,… Seven Dwarfs Mine Train …It’s a Small World,… it’s a small world …Haunted Mansion,… Haunted Mansion …Splash Mountain (to make their last day a zip-a-dee-doo-dah one),… Splash Mountain …and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! There was also a dedicated line for them at the Mickey Mouse Meet-and-Greet at the Town Square Theater so they could give their best pal one final hug. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Although it might be bittersweet, we have to agree with Winnie the Pooh when he says: “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” We’re sending all our love here at DFB to the Disney Program participants during this trying time! With the parks at Disney World preparing to close amid coronavirus concerns, some Disney Springs locations are still considering next steps. Jaleo As of press time, Disney Springs will remain open during the park closure, but some individual locations are still choosing to temporarily shut their doors. Some stores have announced that they will be temporarily closed and House of Blues is cancelling several scheduled events. Another location that might be impacted is the Spanish restaurant, Jaleo. Jaleo is run by Chef José Andrés. Today, he announced on both his website and Instagram that all of his restaurants in the Washington D.C. area and New York City will be temporarily closing due to the coronavirus as of March 15th. For the time being, these restaurants will be repurposed as “community kitchens” with affordable take-out meals available for purchase. ©Jaleo via Instagram At this time, Chef José is still deciding whether Jaleo in Disney Springs will be affected. With the parks closed until at least the end of March in response to the coronavirus outbreak, Disney World has scaled back the transportation options available to guests. Epcot The Disney World parks will be closed from the end of the day on Sunday, March 15th through at least the end of the month. While Disney Springs and Disney Resort Hotels are scheduled to remain open at press time, it appears there will likely be reduced transportation options available. With Disney Springs and Disney Resort Hotels remaining open, guests will still have limited transportation options provided by Disney. According to a Cast Member we spoke with earlier today, Disney buses will continue to operate between the Disney Resort hotels and the Disney Springs area. Minnie Bus At this time, the Disney Skyliner plans to be closed, but the Resort Monorail and boats between resorts and Disney Springs will most likely remain available during the coronavirus closure. On Monday, March 16th, the four Walt Disney World theme parks will begin a temporary closure through the end of the month in light of concerns about the Coronavirus. Walt Disney World Entrance This will follow the closure of the Disneyland Resort parks — Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure — which went into effect today. And now Disney has just announced that Walt Disney World is echoing Disneyland in another significant way: Walt Disney World Resort will be donating excess food to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. Disney states: “To help other Central Floridians in need during this time, Walt Disney World Resort will donate excess food inventory like fresh salads, greens and expertly cooked hot items to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, as part of the ongoing Disney Harvest program.” ©Disney Disney shares that the program — which was launched in 1991 — collects excess and unserved food from Walt Disney World locations and delivers it to feeding programs throughout Central Florida. “The Disney Harvest Program at Walt Disney World Resort collects and distributes more than 823,000 pounds of prepared, unserved food annually and supports Second Harvest’s work serving more than 40 Orlando-area nonprofits. In the last year alone, these donations provided one million meals to people in need.” Additionally, Disney supports Second Harvest Food Bank with monetary contributions and the Disney VoluntEARS program (whereby Cast Members volunteer their time with food collection, sorting, and distribution). Second Harvest Food Bank is also the “celebrated charity” of November’s runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend. Excess food from the post-race snack boxes provided to participants is donated and distributed to the Food Bank. We will continue to keep you posted on the Coronavirus news and its impact on the Disney parks. We here at DFB have been tracking the steps that Disney has taken around the parks to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. You can learn more about that here. Since making the important decision to temporarily close theme parks at Walt Disney World and adjust our offerings, we have continued to take time to focus on the well-being of our Cast Members, our Guests, our families and the local community we call home. To help other Central Floridians in need during this time, Walt Disney World Resort will donate excess food inventory like fresh salads, greens and expertly cooked hot items to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, as part of the ongoing Disney Harvest program. Launched in 1991, Disney Harvest collects excess and unserved food from locations throughout Walt Disney World, delivering it to feeding programs across Central Florida. What you might not know…the Disney Harvest Program at Walt Disney World Resort collects and distributes more than 823,000 pounds of prepared, unserved food annually and supports Second Harvest’s work serving more than 40 Orlando-area nonprofits. In the last year alone, these donations provided one million meals to people in need. “Second Harvest Food Bank is known for their vital work addressing critical food needs in Central Florida, and we know the important role we play in helping to bring meaningful solutions to our community in times of great need.” said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, Director of External Affairs at Walt Disney World Resort. Walt Disney World’s longstanding support of Second Harvest Food Bank also includes monetary contributions and ongoing Disney VoluntEARS efforts, where Cast Members donate their time to collect, sort and distribute food donations.
